Flynn, Pacioretty and Artturi Lehkonen each scored against Calvin Pickard in the opening 7:12, and then Pacioretty, Paul Byron and Flynn each had a goal among the first four shots on Semyon Varlamov.

Pacioretty completed his hat trick in the second period and added another in the third to give the captain seven goals in his last four games.

Alexander Radulov and Jeff Petry also scored for Montreal, which has shown no drop-off without injured scoring leader and first-line center Alex Galchenyuk. Montreal outshot the Avs 36-16.

Montreal's six-goal first period was its first since Dec. 17, 1992 against the Quebec Nordiques in an 8-3 win.

Jakub Voracek added an empty-netter and also had three assists for the Flyers, who matched Montreal for the longest winning streak in the NHL this season.

Philadelphia last won eight straight games from Jan. 6-19, 2002.

Devin Shore had both goals for the Stars.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Alex Goligoski and Lauren Dauphin scored 1:57 apart in the first period and Arizona beat Nashville.

Brendan Perlini added his first career goal, Martin Hanzal also scored and Mike Smith made 42 saves for the Coyotes, who were 0-3-3 since their last win against at Edmonton on Nov. 27.

Arizona scored four goals for the first time since Nov. 8 after totaling four in its previous four games.

Roman Josi scored and Pekka Rinne made 30 saves for the Predators, who have lost four of five (1-3-1).

            • Sunday’s six-pack

Six most popular picks in Week 14 of the Westgate SuperContest:

              6) Green Bay Packers +2.5 (408)

              5) Minnesota Vikings -3 (420)

              4) Tampa Bay Buccaneers -2.5 (440)

              3) Washington Redskins -1 (481)

              2) Pittsburgh Steelers -1.5 (558)

              1) Baltimore Ravens +7 (577)

Sunday’s Den: Running Diary of a sports Saturday…….

11:45am— I am not a morning person; like to stay up late and then sleep late, so dragging my butt out of bed at 11:25 for some Rice Krispies and the start of the Temple-DePaul game seems like an even worse idea now that Temple leads 13-1 5:30 into the game.

This is part of a HoopHall doubleheader in the Miami Heat’s arena and there might’ve been 100 people in the arena when the game started. Players probably had their pregame meal at 7:30am. Coaches will do most anything to get their teams on national TV.

12:05— Mercifully, games are starting that have people in the stands.

Arizona is playing with seven scholarship players at Missouri, due to injury/eligiblity issues. Missouri hasn’t been any good since Frank Haith bolted for Tulsa. Supposedly Missouri has a kid who is a real good scorer who becomes eligible for their next game, so that should help the Tigers.

UMass-Providence from the Dunkin’ Donuts Center; every time I watch a Providence home game, I get hungry for a jelly donut and a hot chocolate.

Dunkin’ Donuts have drive-thru windows (I’ve never used one); seems to me if you’re sucking down donuts, least you can do is get out of the car to buy them.

Villanova-Notre Dame is the best noon game, from the arena in New Jersey where the NHL’s Devils play. The great Bill Raftery is on this game; met him in Syracuse close to 30 years ago. Good guy, as friendly in person as he seems on TV.

Notre Dame leads early 15-6; Mike Brey is an underrated coach.

12:50— Arizona was up 17 at Missouri, but Tigers cut lead to 41-36 at the half. Sean Miller looks like a guy in a bar at 3am who just lost his job— tie undone, frazzled. He’s never been in the Final Four at a school where Final Fours are expected and his team is dangerously thin this season.

Good one in Newark; Notre Dame is better than expected- they lead Villanova 41-36 at the half of a high-level game. Could easily be an NCAA tournament game.

I was in the Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas when Villanova won the national title last April; great fun. Opening Day of baseball, last college hoop game of the year- first Monday in April has become one of the better days of the sports year.

1:25— CBS’ Carter Blackburn is one of the best play-by-play guys on TV; he is working with Raftery today on the Villanova game. Few years ago, he was working a Conference USA game with Pete Gillen when Rice’s mascot Sammie the Owl was ejected for bitching (hooting?) at a referee. Blackburn should be doing NFL games on the network; someday he’ll call a Final Four.

Easy way for college basketball to increase scoring in its games: allow continuation baskets after fouls, the way they do in the NBA. Would be simple enough to do, makes the game more fun.

1:45— Final: Temple 74, DePaul 65— Blue Demons fought back, but they’re not very good.

ESPNU had a live Pop Warner football game from Florida on TV this morning. Seriously? They televise 12-year old kids playing football? Thought that was only at the Little League World Series in August. No wonder I like to sleep late.

Sean Miller can relax: his Arizona team went on a 21-0 run, leads Mizzou by 22 with 2:00 left.

Remember the time when Pitt’s Jerome Lane dunked in a game and shattered the backboard while Raftery screamed “Send it in Jerome!!!” on live TV? Miller assisted on that dunk.

2:05— Villanova 74, Notre Dame 66— If you won this game laying 6.5 points with the Wildcats, you had the wrong side in this game, but you covered. Thats an interesting debate; people will say “I won, how could they be the wrong side?” but sometimes the covering team lucked out. Notre Dame controlled this game for 36:00 but faded down the stretch- couldn’t hit that one shot to cover the number.

Odd bowl matchup: North Texas (+16.5) went to West Point Oct 22 and upset Army 35-18; UNT was +6 in turnovers in game where Cadets outgained North Texas 396-320- this is the only rematch of this bowl season. Favorites won/covered the Heart of Dallas Bowl the last five years, with all five games decided by 13+ points. Favorites rarely dominate bowl games.

Mediocre set of 2:00 TV games; I’m focusing on Rhode Island-Houston, Wisconsin-Marquette.

2:45— URI is up 42-37; Rams have lot of injuries, seems like every year.

Former major league pitcher Anthony Varvaro (relieved in 166 games in a 6-year MLB career) made over $2M in his baseball career, but now he has a new job— he will be a police officer with the Port Authority Police of NY/NJ- he pitched for the Red Sox’ AAA team this past summer. Interesting career change.

3:02— Halftime: Marquette 40, Wisconsin 35- Best game going on right now, Katin Reinhardt plays for Marquette, his third college (UNLV, USC) in five years. College coaches are like NBA GMs now, poaching other teams for unhappy kids who might catch lightning in a bottle with a new team for one season. This is why teams have very little depth; unhappy subs are constantly transferring. The grass is always greener somewhere else.

But what do these kids do when they become adults and join the real world? Reinhardt isn’t an NBA player, so he’ll play in Europe for a while then have to find a real job. He’ll have a boss and a wife and kids and he won’t be able to pull up stakes and move every time he is unhappy.

3:50— Houston 82, Rhode Island 77— Danny Hurley’s team is banged-up and having trouble on the road. This game had the feel of an NIT first-round game in March.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin went on a 26-8 run and is up 15 at Marquette. Just because you sit next to Mike Krzyzewski and played for him doesn’t mean you can coach like him.

In one 3-game stretch in November, Maryland’s football team was outscored 149-13; how in the name of Ralph Friedgen are the Terps in a bowl game, much less favored to win it? They play Boston College in a bowl at 2:30 on a Monday afternoon; fitting time slot, at least.

4:16— Wisconsin 93, Marquette 84— Damn. High scoring. Badgers are a veteran team; I’m curious how Greg Gard will fare once these kids are gone and he has to recruit new guys. I’m not judging, just saying this is being done with players Bo Ryan recruited.

Is it fun to be rich? Everyone has problems, rich people’s problems seem better than mine.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. owner Sheldon Adelson lost more than $3 billion in less than an hour this week, after word came from Macau that the government there was reducing the amount of money people can withdraw from one of Macau’s largest banks by 50%.

Because of this rule change, stock in Macau’s casinos dipped so much that Adelson’s stake was worth $3.2B less than it had been an hour earlier. The guy is still worth $29B, so not like he has to panhandle for food, but minus-$3.2B is still a rough couple of hours.

This all has to do with Chinese people wanting to gamble in Macau and how they withdraw money to do so. They just opened a new Asian-themed casino in Las Vegas, that also caters to Chinese clientele.

5:35— Duke was killing UNLV 20-3, it is 20-7 now. Rebels are basically an expansion team; when they hired Marvin Menzies, think he had four players on the roster, so this is a total rebuild- they’re in way over their head today, getting 24.5 points down the street from their own campus.

Dick Vitale is doing this game; it is tough for me to listen to him anymore. He is talking about 1990 and the Tarkanian years— that era is long gone and ain’t ever coming back. Menzies will build this roster up and UNLV will be a solid mid-major, but no more Final Fours.

Wichita State 53, Oklahoma 50— 9:10 left. Good ballgame with March implications.
Butler 44, Cincinnati 39— 15:00 left. Big East-AAC games are always interesting. Still makes me laugh that there are Big EAST teams in Cincinnati, Indy, Milwaukee and Omaha.

6:05— Duke 42-26 at the half and UNLV’s kids are playing their butts off. One thing Vitale was talking about that has some merit; making it six fouls for a college player to foul out. Think the game would be better that way.

Wichita State beats Oklahoma 76-73; Doug Gottlieb had this one right. ESPN messed up when they let Gottlieb bolt for CBS. He is a better analyst than Jay Bilas and more personable.

This game pushed the spread when the Wichita kid made a foul shot he was trying to miss with 0:00.5 left and Shockers up by 2.

Army 21, Navy 17— Cadets win this rivalry game for first time in 15 years.

8:00— Duke 94, UNLV 45— If I’m Marvin Menzies, next time he makes recruiting calls, the term “…..immediate playing time is available” would be used. A lot. It is an effective phrase.

8:30— It bugs me that the Heisman Trophy has an actual hour-long TV program to give out an award when it takes 90 seconds to announce the winner. Guess people are stupid enough to buy commercial time, so they have the program and it makes money. Why?

9:00— Halftime: Michigan 50, UCLA 50— Outstanding game.

Lamar Jackson won the Heisman Trophy. Good for him.

I’m off to go have dinner and watch some more games. Have a nice day.

DETROIT (AP) Brayden Schenn scored 2:44 into overtime and Anthony Stolarz got his first shutout in his second career start, lifting the Philadelphia Flyers over the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 on Sunday night for their ninth consecutive win.

Stolarz made 28 saves, helping Philadelphia outlast Jimmy Howard and the Red Wings. Howard made 34 saves in his first start since Nov. 23.

Schenn cut in from the left wing, skated across the top of the crease, faked a backhand shot and then slid the puck in for his eighth goal of the season and fourth in two games.

Howard stopped Pierre-Edouard Bellemaire from the bottom inside edge of the right circle 1:53 into overtime.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Patrik Laine shot the puck into his own net midway through the third period, costing Winnipeg in a loss to Edmonton.

Edmonton's Mark Letestu was credited with his second goal of the game when Laine fired the rebound of Letestu's slap shot directly into his own wide-open goal.

Captain Blake Wheeler put an arm around Laine to console him when the Finnish rookie returned to the bench. The 18-year-old ranks third in the NHL with 17 goals and is an early front-runner for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie.

Oscar Klefbom also scored and Cam Talbot made 29 saves for the Oilers.

Mathieu Perreault and Chris Thorburn had goals for the Jets, who have now lost four straight games. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 27 shots.

TORONTO (AP) - Semyon Varlamov made 51 saves, helping Colorado rebound from a miserable loss with a victory over Toronto.

The Avs lost 10-1 to Montreal on Saturday night but rebounded on the back of their Russian goaltender. Mikko Rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon and Blake Comeau scored, helping last-place Colorado get its second win in nine games.

Antoine Bibeau made 26 saves in his first NHL start, and Jake Gardiner scored for Toronto.

The Leafs, who won 4-1 in Boston on Saturday, are now 0-5-1 in the second half of back-to-backs this season.

NEW YORK (AP) - J.T. Miller and Brady Skjei scored 3:50 apart late in the second period, Antti Raanta stopped 19 shots for his second straight shutout and New York beat New Jersey.

Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist, and Brandon Pirri and Jimmy Vesey also scored to give the Rangers their first three-game winning streak since Nov. 12-15.

Raanta, starting for the third time in four nights and coming off a 1-0 overtime win against Chicago on Friday, got his sixth career shutout and improved to 8-1-0 with a 1.65 goals-against average in 10 starts this season.

Cory Schneider finished with 25 saves for New Jersey, which lost its third straight. The Devils had an early goal disallowed after a review and another didn't count because it came after a whistle.

                              BLACKHAWKS 3, STARS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Marian Hossa, Artem Anisimov and Artemi Panarin scored to lead Central Division-leading Chicago over Dallas.

Chicago's Scott Darling made 23 saves in his fifth straight start while No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford recovers from an appendectomy. Darling has permitted just seven goals during the stretch, but the Blackhawks have scored only nine while going 2-2-1.

Devin Shore scored for Dallas, which lost its second straight and third in four.

Dallas' Kari Lehtonen blocked 24 shots while making his fifth straight start.

The 37-year-old Hossa scored his team-leading 15th goal and has three in three games.

Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews missed his ninth game and defenseman Brent Seabrook his second with upper-body injuries.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored a power-play goal in the first period and Braden Holtby made it stand up, stopping 20 shots to help Washington beat weary Vancouver.

Washington nursed a 1-0 lead until Ovechkin earned an assist on a goal by Justin Williams with just under 15 minutes left.

Tom Wilson scored into an empty net with 52 seconds remaining to seal the Capitals' fourth straight victory. Washington killed five Vancouver power plays to complete a two-game season sweep.

Holtby was rarely tested in his 25th career shutout, the second this season.

                              WILD 3, BLUES 1

Vladimir Tarasenko scored his 14th goal of the season for St. Louis. Jake Allen stopped 22 shots for the Blues, who had won five of their past seven games.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday…..

Titans 13, Broncos 10— Tennessee has to be excited; they’re 7-6, tied for first in AFC South and they have the Rams’ #1 draft pick next year, so they’ll clean up next April and get even better. This was an ugly game; Titans scored 10 points on first two possessions, then held on for the win despite gaining only 178 yards the rest of the game. Mariota was 6-20/88 passing, but his team won. Five of last six Denver games stayed under the total.

Panthers 28, Chargers 16— San Diego turned ball over five times (-4). I have a question: Why can’t the Chargers just stay in San Diego and play in Qualcomm? Why is it better for them to move to LA and be a second rate tenant in a new ballpark? Who will go to their games there? At least in San Diego they have a whole city behind them, buying their gear, Maybe I’m an idiot, but seems to me every NFL team doesn’t need a brand-new stadium.

Texans 22, Colts 17— Houston is tied for first with Titans in AFC South; they ran ball for 185 yards, had 3 takeaways (+2), kicked five FGs- usually when a team scores one TD and kicks five FGs, they lose. Colts are 1-4-1 vs spread this year in game following a win; some teams cannot stand prosperity. This is only second time Texans have won in Indy (2-13). Under is 5-2 in last seven Houston games, 4-0 in Colts’ last four home games.

Bengals 23, Browns 10— I’m still amazed that an NFL franchise is worth roughly $1B, give or take, and the Browns are being run by Jonah Hill’s character from Moneyball. Seriously, why would you have a guy who spent most of the last 15 years as a baseball executive run your NFL team? It makes zero bleeping sense. Cleveland is 1-5-1 vs spread as a home underdog, losing home games by 5-20-3-25-15-14-13 points

Steelers 27, Bills 20— Pittsburgh ran ball for 240 yards in the snow, amidst rumors that Rex Ryan is going to get fired. If Ryan and Jeff Fisher both get fired, then maybe their teams can hire coaches who actually care about offense and the league will put out a better product. Pittsburgh has now won/covered its last four games.

Non-football observation: if you’re going to be outside in a snowstorm for 3.5 hours, put on a goddamn coat. Rex Ryan wore same clothes for this game he wore in the LA Coliseum when the Bills played there. Even his brother wore a parka.

Dolphins 26, Cardinals 23— Game was played in a monsoon; Arizona’s kicker had an awful day, but did make a 56-yard FG. Miami kicked FG on last play to win, but they lost QB Tannehill to an ACL injury, so looks like Matt Moore gets to run the ball club the rest of the way- their #3 QB is former Western Kentucky QB Doughty. Arizona needs to draft a QB next spring; Carson Palmer is getting up there in years.

NFC West went 0-4 Sunday, turning ball over 15 times and 49ers didn’t have any turnovers.

Lions 20, Bears 17— Detroit is now 9-4 despite trailing in 4th quarter in 12 of 13 games. You know it might be the Lions’ year when Stafford throws a pick-6 to give Chicago a 17-13 lead with 7:07 left, but Detroit drives back down field to score game-winning TD with 3:17 left. Lions are 6-1 at home with four wins by exactly three points.

Pretty sure I’m going to be in Las Vegas when the NFL schedule comes out for 2017; first thing I’m going to do is bet the under on the Lions’ win total for next year.

Vikings 25, Jaguars 16— Minnesota ran ball 29 times for 85 yards (28 for 70 if you take out one Bradford scramble for 15 yards); they scored only 16 points on five red zone drives, but won anyway. Jaguars are 0-6 at home, have lost eight games in a row (2-6 vs spread). Vikings had been 2-6 this season when they didn’t score a TD on defense/special teams, now they’re 3-6.

Mike Zimmer coached this game with his right eye totally covered by tape; he is one tough human. He wore sunglasses when Minnesota had the ball, but took them off so he could read his defensive call charts when Jaguars had the ball. Lot of admiration for coach Zimmer.

Bucs 16, Saints 11— Sean Payton was yukking it up two weeks ago when he ran the score up on the sorry Rams, but since then his team scored a total of 24 points in losses to Detroit, Tampa Bay. New Orleans is 5-8 and going nowhere with an aging QB; they’re 0-6 when they score less than 25 points. Under is 5-2 in Saints’ last seven games, 2-0-1 in Bucs’ last three.

Tampa Bay has won five games in a row and is looking smart for drafting Jameis Winston.

Redskins 27, Eagles 22— Washington won last five meetings with Philly, with average total in last six series games, 53.8; Eagles scored one offensive TD on 17 drives in two games with Redskins this year. Over is 11-2 in Washington games this season.

Jets 23, 49ers 17 OT— Niners snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, blowing a 17-3 halftime lead, losing their 12th straight game. Bryce Petty gets his first NFL win. Weird that SF was favored in its last two games, despite being an awful team.

I’m wondering if the networks stopped showing Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the National Anthem because he said he didn’t vote on Election Day. Just curious, thats all.

Packers 38, Seahawks 10— Seattle has now lost their last seven visits here; they’re 1-4-1 this season when scoring less than 26 points. Somehow, Green Bay’s defense has revived itself, allowing 36 points in last three games, after allowing 153 points in the four games before that- they had six takeaways in this game. Seattle is 2-4-1 on the road and they’ve fallen out of the #2 slot in the NFC, so they might be going on the road in the second week of the playoffs.

Falcons 42, Rams 14— Observations from this game and with apologies to the Falcons, I’ve got nothing to say about them— picked them last week and they lost.

                                — Rams should fire their head coach today, just to save everyone three more weeks of aggravation.

                                — Last three weeks: L21-49, L10-26, L14-42. Unacceptable results. Sometimes divorce is a good thing— just ask my ex-wife (its a joke!!!)

                                — The next coach should a) be an offensive guru or b) hire an offensive guru to be OC and yes, I’m thinking of Norv Turner, if we go the OC way.

                                — Find the best offensive line coach in America and pay him a boatload of cash to come to LA.

                                — They can keep Gregg Williams and John Fassel; defense/special teams ain’t the problem.

                                — Here are some W-L records of how QBs did their rookie year: Elway 4-6, PManning 3-13, EManning 1-6, Aikman 0-11, Stafford 2-8, Marino 7-2. Playing QB in the NFL is a hard job.

                                — I pay more money than I should for DirecTV, for one reason; to watch NFL games on Sundays, specifically the Rams. 13 consecutive non-winning seasons is getting my money’s worth.

Giants 10, Cowboys 7— Dak Prescott grew up in Louisiana; wonder if he ever played in a frigid night game before? Dallas is 11-2 with two losses to the Giants by total of four points. If playoffs started tomorrow, NFC Wild Card game would be Bucs @ Giants. AFC would be either Miami/Denver @ Oakland. Last five Giant games stayed under the total.
