The Toronto Maple Leafs have been a friend to bettors at the window lately. The Leafs have rattled off five consecutive games, including two straight in overtime and another in a shootout, and they have won four straight as an underdog (+464 during the span). In addition, total bettors have been pleased with their constant 'under' results, hitting in 12 of the past 14 games overall. The 'under' is 6-1 in Toronto's past seven games on the road, which is where they are heading Tuesday in Washington and Friday in New Jersey. In fact, four of Toronto's next five games are away from the center of the hockey universe.

            Coyote Ugly
The Arizona Coyotes have dropped seven consecutive games heading into the new year, and they have been outscored 28-13 during the unimpressive span. The Coyotes are in such a tailspin that they haven't been favored since Nov. 23, a span of 19 straight games. In fact, the Coyotes have been favored just three times all season, and they haven't won in such position since their opening game overtime victory against Philadelphia back on Oct. 15 when they were a -110 favorite, highest of the season.

            Looking Ahead

            Tuesday, Jan. 3
The Blue Jackets put their 15-game winning streak on the line against the visiting Oilers. Columbus won 3-1 in northern Alberta against the Oilers bback on Dec. 13, their seventh win of the streak, and they are a perfect 4-0 in the past four meetings at Nationwide Arena against Edmonton. The Oilers have won just once in the past six meetings overall, with the home team cashing in 22 of the past 30 meetings overall. The 'over' has connected in 20 of the past 26 in this series, with the 'over' going a perfect 4-0 in the past four battles in C-Bus.

The battle between the Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators loses some of its shine, as D P.K. Subban (back) is sidelined for the first meeting against his former team. But D Shea Weber makes his first return to the Music City in his 801st career NHL game, and it should be very emotional for him. Montreal has won just once in the past five overall, and they're 9-24 in their past 33 tries against Western Conference teams. Nashville has dropped five in a row at home, but the Predators are an impressive 9-4 in their past 13 against teams with an overall winning record.

            Wednesday, Jan. 4
The Rangers hit the road for the City of Brotherly Love to battle the Flyers. New York coasts in with six victories in the past seven games on the road, and they're 9-3 in their past 12 games overall. However, the Blueshirts have managed just two victories in the past seven against teams with a winning overall record. Philly is 7-1 in their past eight at home, but they have dropped four in a row and they're just 2-6 in their past eight against teams with a winning percentage over .600. The Rangers have won four straight in this series, and the road team is 4-1 in the past five meetings. The 'under' is 1-0-3 in the past four in Philly, and 3-0-3 in the past six meetings overall.

The Coyotes will face the Canucks in Vancouver, and that usually doesn't end well for them. Arizona is just 8-21-1 in their past 30 trips to the Pacific Northwest, and they have dropped each of their past four overall. The 'under' is 2-0-2 in the past four in Vancouver, with the 'under' going 18-7-3 in the past 28 meetings in this series. Arizona has won just 12 times in their past 51 tries on the road, while going 0-4 in the past four against teams with a losing overall record. The Canucks skate in on a four-game win streak, and they're 4-1 in their past five games on home ice.

            Thursday, Jan. 5
The Wild look to stay hot against the Sharks in a battle of two premier Western Conference teams. This is the first meeting between the two Western Conference foes this season. Last season the Sharks split a pair of games on home ice with the Wild, winning 4-3 on Jan. 23, 2016, and losing 2-0 on Dec. 12. San Jose won two of the three meetings overall, and four of the past five in the series. Minnesota has won six straight on the road dating back to a shootout loss in Calgary back on Dec. 2, and they have lost in regulation on the road just once in the past 11 away from St. Paul.

The Red Wings pull into Los Angeles Thursday night looking to crown the Kings, but lately they haven't been able to piece much together. Detroit hasn't won back-to-back games in nearly a month. The Kings won 4-1 in their final visit to Joe Louis Arena back on Dec. 15. The Red Wings are just 3-5-2 over their past 10 games. However, they are 4-1-1 in their past six games on the road, while Los Angeles is 6-1-1 in their past eight games at home. Something's gotta give in this meeting between former Western Conference combatants.

            Friday, Jan. 6
The Maple Leafs look to stay hot against the ice-cold Devils in Newark Friday night. New Jersey was glad to see the calendar turn to 2017, ringing in the new year with a 3-0 shutout of the visiting Boston Bruins Monday night. It was a rare home win, as the Devils are just 2-4 over their past six at home. These teams met in Newark back on Nov. 23, and New Jersey came away with a 5-4 victory in a shootout. New Jersey hasn't lost in regulation in 10 straight meetings with Toronto (6-0-4), and the Devils have won five straight meetings on home ice.

The Flames meet the Canucks in Vancouver for the third meeting of the season. The Canucks won the first meeting back on Oct. 15, snuffing out the Flames 2-1 in a shootout. Calgary avenged the loss on home ice with a 4-1 win Dec. 23. The Flames have won three of their past four games overall, and they're 6-2-1 in their past nine games on the road. Vancouver has won four in a row heading into the new week, and they have lost in regulation just once in their past eight on home ice (6-1-1).

                • NHL Capsules
                  January 3, 2017

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Cam Atkinson and William Karlsson scored power-play goals and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 on Tuesday night to extend their winning streak to 16 games - one away from the longest ever in the NHL.

Nick Foligno also scored for the Blue Jackets, who can tie the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins with a victory Thursday night at Washington. The near-sellout crowd chanted ''We want 16!'' as the clock ticked down.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 21 shots for Columbus, which started the new year on the right note after winning all 14 games in December. The Blue Jackets haven't lost since Nov. 26 thanks in part to the league's best power-play unit.

Oscar Klefbom scored for Edmonton, which was limited throughout by Columbus' hard-pressing defense. Cam Talbot had 32 saves for the Oilers.

                  CANADIENS 2, PREDATORS 1, OT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Shea Weber scored in the third period of his return to Nashville and Max Pacioretty had a goal late in overtime for Montreal.

Weber helped send it to overtime with his tying goal at 4:26 of the third. This was the first game between these teams since a stunning blockbuster trade last June, when they swapped All-Star defensemen, with the Predators getting P.K. Subban.

Carey Price made 22 saves for his first win in four games.

Kevin Fiala scored and Pekka Rinne made 41 saves to help the Predators snap a three-game losing streak against Montreal.

Subban was placed on injured reserve Sunday and missed his eighth game with an upper-body injury. Subban was announced earlier Tuesday as the fans' choice as Central Division captain for the NHL All-Star Game.

CAPITALS 6, MAPLE LEAFS 5, OT

WASHINGTON (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored 22 seconds into overtime and Washington rallied to end Toronto's winning streak at five.

Ovechkin's 18th goal of the season came after the Capitals erased multiple deficits to win their third in a row. The Russian superstar moved to within five points of 1,000 for his career.

Justin Williams had a goal and two assists, and T.J. Oshie, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov and John Carlson also scored for Washington. Philipp Grubauer made 15 saves in relief of Braden Holtby, who was pulled after allowing three goals on eight shots.

Nazem Kadri, Connor Brown, Frederik Gauthier, Leo Komarov and Mitch Marner scored for the Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen made 23 saves.

                  KINGS 2, SHARKS 1, OT

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Tanner Pearson scored 58 seconds into overtime to help Los Angeles rally for a victory over San Jose and a sweep of the home-and-home series.

Jeff Carter tied it early in the third with his 21st goal and then set up the winner after San Jose lost possession in the offensive zone.

Carter came in on a 2-on-1 and passed to Pearson for the one-timer that gave the Kings their league-leading seventh overtime win of the season.

Peter Budaj made 26 saves and Los Angeles followed up a 3-2 win at home over first-place San Jose on Saturday night with another on the road to even the season series at two games apiece.

Logan Couture scored the lone goal for the Sharks, who lost for just the second time all season when leading after two periods. Martin Jones made 33 saves.

                  SABRES 4, RANGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Evander Kane and Justin Bailey scored 1:42 apart around the first intermission, leading Buffalo over New York.

Zemgus Girgensons and Jack Eichel also scored, and Anders Nilsson stopped 24 shots to help the Sabres win for just the second time in eight games (2-4-3). Sam Reinhart had two assists, extending his career-best points streak to seven games and giving him two goals and seven assists in that stretch.

Buffalo has beaten the Rangers in three straight meetings - including twice this season - after losing the previous nine.

Nick Holden scored and Henrik Lundqvist made 15 saves for the Rangers, who were trying for their first four-game winning streak since a five-game run Oct. 30 to Nov. 6. The Rangers have had four three-game winning streaks since.

                  DEVILS 3, HURRICANES 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Adam Henrique, Michael Cammalleri and Kyle Palmieri each had a goal and an assist, leading New Jersey over Carolina.

Carolina ended an 11-game home points streak (10-0-1), and the Devils clinched the four-game season series. New Jersey has defeated the Hurricanes twice in regulation and once in overtime in three meetings.

                  Sebastian Aho scored for Carolina.

Devils goalie Cory Schneider made 29 saves a night after shutting out the visiting Boston Bruins.

Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward stopped 15 of 17 shots on goal. The Devils had a season-low 18 shots, including Palmieri's empty-netter.

                  JETS 6, LIGHTNING 4

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Nikolaj Ehlers had two goals, including a penalty shot during Winnipeg's three-goal second period.

The Jets, coming of a pair of losses where they were outscored 11-5, also got goals from Mark Scheifele, Jacob Trouba, Dustin Byfuglien and Patrik Laine. Connor Hellebuyck made 32 saves

Matthew Peca got his first NHL goal for the Lightning. Nikita Kucherov had two goals, Ondrej Palat also scored and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 28 shots.

                    — Home favorites were 4-1 vs spread in MAC games last nite, 2-8 everywhere else.

                    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 16: Hump Day knowledge…..

                    13) Over the last 12 years, Big 14 teams are 41-64 in bowl games; 4-0 vs MAC teams, 14-23 vs SEC teams, 7-12 vs Pac-12 teams.

Against spread, Big 14 teams are 11-15-2 vs spread when favored, 39-35-3 as an underdog.

                    12) Jets fired six assistant coaches Tuesday; well, officially OC Chan Gailey “retired” but guys like that seldom retire.

                    11) Football coaches are somewhat nomadic; not only are the Jets looking for six assistants, but six NFL teams are looking for head coaches and new staffs. Will be interesting to see which jobs get filled first, and by whom.

                    10) Stumbled upon a pretty good movie: One More Time, with Christopher Walken playing an aging lounge singer who in one scene is teaching his young (7-8ish) grandson how to play blackjack, using playing cards with naked women on them. Offbeat movie, but pretty good.

                    9) Tony Romo’s brief performance in Philly Sunday probably will net Dallas a slightly better draft pick than they would’ve gotten for Romo otherwise.

Chuckled at the story that Chip Kelly wanted to draft Dak Prescott last April, but GM Trent Baalke wouldn’t do it. Maybe it was the supposed DUI arrest in March that made him hesitant.

Eight months after the draft, it is easy for people to claim they wanted to draft Prescott; didn’t hear from any of those people last spring.

                    8) Denver media had great respect for Gary Kubiak; when he finished his final press conference with the Broncos the other day, media actually applauded him as he left the room. Doesn’t happen much.

                    7) I used to say it was worth getting NFL Sunday Ticket just to watch Barry Sanders run with the ball; now I feel the same way about watching Aaron Rodgers play QB. Tremendous ability in the scramble drill to find open receivers.

                    6) College administrators are weasels; Minnesota fired football coach Tracy Claeys because he supported his players when they threatened to boycott their bowl game because ten players had been suspended after an off-field incident in which no one has been charged with anything.

But because they don’t want protests, the easiest thing to do to make everything go away was to fire the coach. Lets see if the players protest their coach’s firing after he supported them.

                    5) There were only seven punts blocked in the NFL all season; three of them came Sunday, in Week 17.

                    4) South Florida fired basketball coach Orlando Antigua, who didn’t win much and got USF in trouble with the NCAA for alleged academic fraud. Not winning was the worst of those two.

                    3) New Orleans Saints gained 6,816 yards this season (426.0 per game) most yards gained by any team ever that didn’t make the playoffs.

                    2) Houston will start Brock Osweiler at QB against Oakland this week; Raiders are likely going to start rookie 3rd-string QB Connor Cook, who has never started an NFL game.

1— Speaking of the Texans, they scored only 25 touchdowns this year, fewest by any playoff team since 1978, when the NFL went to a 16-game schedule.
