BOSTON (AP) Robert Bortuzzo and Paul Stastny scored 2:12 apart in the second period and Jake Allen had 39 saves, helping the St. Louis Blues beat the Boston Bruins 4-2 on Tuesday night to extend their winning streak to four.

Jori Lehtera scored twice for St. Louis, including into an empty net with 1:16 left. Colton Parayko and Patrik Berglund each had two assists.

Longtime Blues captain David Backes scored for Boston in his first game against his former club, putting the Bruins up 1-0 early in the first with the 20,000th goal in franchise history. Montreal is the only other NHL team with 20,000 goals.

Dominic Moore also scored for the Bruins, who lost for just the third time this season with Tuukka Rask starting in goal.

Rask had 24 saves for the Bruins, who had won four of five.

    HURRICANES 2, MAPLE LEAFS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Viktor Stalberg scored a tiebreaking, short-handed goal in the second period, lifting Carolina over Toronto for its fifth straight victory.

Jeff Skinner also scored for Carolina, and Cam Ward stopped 25 shots.

Frederik Andersen made 27 saves for Toronto, which lost for only the third time in 10 games at home. Jake Gardiner had the Leafs' goal.

Stalberg got the deciding tally against his former team after Tyler Bozak's pass was picked off in the neutral zone. Stalberg entered the zone alone, beating Andersen for his third goal of the season.

    SENATORS 4, CANADIENS 3

MONTREAL (AP) - Mark Stone and Erik Karlsson scored 2:24 apart in the third period, helping Ottawa rally to beat Montreal.

Stone tied it at 3 early in the third from the slot after three Canadiens players got caught behind their own net.

Karlsson then scored at 5:37, the visitors' first lead of the evening, on a fluke no-look shot from the blue line after a bad giveaway by Jeff Petry.

Mike Hoffman and Derick Brassard also scored and Craig Anderson made 36 saves for Ottawa.

Shea Weber, Alexander Radulov and Alex Galchenyuk scored for Montreal. Andrei Markov had three assists, and Carey Price stopped 19 of 23 shots.

    FLYERS 3, PANTHERS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Steven Mason made 38 saves and Wayne Simmonds had a goal and an assist, helping Philadelphia beat Florida.

Nick Cousins and Dale Weise also scored for the Flyers, and rookie Travis Konecny and Brayden Schenn had assists.

Reilly Smith scored for the Panthers, who got 25 stops from Roberto Luongo.

The loss spoiled the return of Florida forward Nick Bjugstad, who had missed all of this season after an injury in the preseason.

    • Wednesday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

      13) Fort Wayne 71, Indiana 68 OT— This is why big-name teams don’t go on the road, even though in this game, the crowd was split at least 50-50, with the Hoosiers being so popular in Indiana. TV guys said there was more red than blue in the crowd, so maybe Indiana had more fans.

Fort Wayne is a pretty good team in the Summit League, 66-36 the last three years, 31-15 in Summit games, but they’ve never made the NCAA tourney- this could be the year.

This was just a great game for college basketball; a mid-major getting a big boy in their own gym, then beating them. Good for the sport, good for the city of Fort Wayne, good for people at home watching on TV.

      12) The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is in Springfield, MA but there is also a college basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City. Somehow, Jerry Tarkanian is not in this Hall of Fame, which makes the decision-makers there look plain stupid.

How can you have Norm Stewart, Gene Keady and Lou Carnesecca in there, but not Tark? It is an oversight that needs to be corrected, and don’t give me his NCAA issues— Eddie Sutton had more baggage than a full airplane and he’s been inducted.

      11) I’d love to know what the financial bottom line was for the Texans-Raiders game in Mexico City Monday night; Oakland gave up a home game- they played in a bigger stadium and it was full. Just curious who made how much money; you’ll know it REALLY profitable if they do it again next season.

      10) North Carolina has won the Maui Classic three times; they made the Final Four that year all three times, and won the national title two of the three years.

      9) Mississippi State’s most productive player, Quandarry Weatherspoon, is out for the year with a wrist injury. 3-1 Bulldogs were already the 2nd-youngest team in America, and not especially deep.

      8) Philadelphia 76ers have improved a lot; they’ve won their last four home games and are 7-2 vs spread as a home underdog- they still haven’t been favored to win a game.

      7) It is funny in college basketball; once you beat a team, especially in a non-league game, then you become their biggest fan- every game they win helps your NCAA tournament profile. Good example is Northwestern, which beat Texas Monday- they need the Longhorns to have a great year, so that win looks better in March than it does now.

      6) Why would Jimbo Fisher leave Florida State for LSU? As long as Nick Saban is at Alabama, LSU is a high-paying job where you’re going to take a ton of grief for being second banana to the Crimson Tide. If they fired Les Miles, they’ll fire you.

Fisher is King of the Castle at Florida State; he is in an easier league and in a better state for recruiting. I’m assuming he is very well-paid, with less grief. He ain’t going anywhere.

      5) I’m not sure what this says exactly, but when UConn had their preseason conditioning run, head coach Kevin Ollie finished third. I know Ollie played in the NBA and all, but you probably want your players to be in better shape than the coach.

      4) How much is a quarterback worth in Las Vegas? Looks like Andrew Luck won’t play Thursday against the Steelers; point spread went from Pittsburgh -3 to Steelers -9. Six points is a big jump. Scott Tolzien (0-1-1 as an NFL starter) will play QB for Indy. Looks like former Miami U QB Stephen Morris would come off the practice squad to be the backup.

      3) Speaking of Las Vegas, the new NHL team in Vegas will be called the Golden Knights. The Maloof family, who used to own the Sacramento Kings and the Palms Casino, own 15% of the Golden Knights- they begin play next season at T-Mobile Arena.

      2) TV analyst/former Illinois hooper Stephen Bardo told a great story on TV Tuesday about when he played in college, Illinois played in the Maui Classic one year. TV analyst Bill Raftery rode on the Illini’s flight home, so Bardo was picking his brain about the television business, knowing that one day, he wanted to do that.

Bardo went on to say that Raftery sat next to him the whole (long) flight home and answered every question Bardo had about TV “….and thats why I consider Bill Raftery to be the best.” A very nice tribute; Bardo is a good TV analyst by the way.

1— Quite a day at the White House Tuesday: President Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor to 21 people, including Vin Scully, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Tom Hanks, Robert Deniro, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Redford, Bill Gates.

Imagine what that room was like? Incredible star power.

No doubt that Hanks becomes the first former vendor at the Oakland Coliseum to get this prestigious award.

                        November 23, 2016

WASHINGTON (AP) Alex Ovechkin scored his first hat trick this season and the 16th of his 10-year NHL career to lead the Washington Capitals over the St. Louis Blues 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Ovechkin had a goal in each period to move one hat trick ahead of Florida's Jaromir Jagr for the most among active players. The three-time MVP, who has 12 goals this season, led the Capitals to their third win through four games of a five-game homestand.

Evgeny Kuznetsov had a goal and an assist for Washington, which outshot St. Louis 25-21 and held a lead throughout the final two periods.

Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice and Alex Pietrangelo added a late goal for the Blues, who had won four straight. Carter Hutton made 21 saves as No. 1 goalie Jake Allen sat out the second of back-to-back games.

                        PENGUINS 6, RANGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Sidney Crosby had two goals and an assist during a five-goal second period and Pittsburgh shut down division-leading New York in a rout.

The Penguins held New York without a shot on goal over 23:59 spanning the second and third periods. Scott Wilson, Conor Sheary, Phil Kessel and Matt Cullen also scored for Pittsburgh, and Matt Murray had 16 saves.

The Penguins moved two points behind New York for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

The Rangers won at Pittsburgh 5-2 on Monday behind a breakout second period. The Penguins exacted revenge Wednesday in nearly the exact same fashion.

Pittsburgh trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes, but then the defending Stanley Cup champions took control, chasing Henrik Lundqvist after four goals on 17 shots.

                        FLAMES 2, BLUE JACKETS 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Chad Johnson made 34 saves for his second shutout in five starts, leading Calgary over Columbus.

Troy Brouwer and Micheal Ferland scored for Calgary, which has sought stability between the pipes during an up-and-down early part of the season. The Flames maligned special teams came up big in this one.

Calgary, ranked 29th in penalty killing entering the game, was perfect during a long Columbus power play in the second period, and then its league-worst power play added a goal in the third.

Columbus dropped to 10-3-3 in its last 16 and has lost two straight at home since rolling off seven wins in a row, a franchise record.

RED WINGS 2, SABRES 1, SO

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Gustav Nyquist scored in regulation and in a shootout to help Detroit snap a four-game losing streak.

Thomas Vanek also scored in the shootout and had an assist in regulation for the Red Wings, while Brian Gionta scored in regulation for the Sabres.

Jimmy Howard made 32 saves for the Red Wings, and Robin Lehner made 23 saves for the Sabres

After 36 scoreless minutes, the Red Wings went ahead when Nyquist found the back of the net following a spinning pass from Thomas Vanek. The goal was Nyquist's team-leading fourth of the season.

                        PREDATORS 5, STARS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Filip Forsberg, James Neal and Ryan Johansen each had a goal and an assist to lead Nashville over Dallas.

Mike Fisher and Craig Smith also scored for Nashville, winners of three of four.

Pekka Rinne made 33 saves for Nashville, improving to 7-1-2 this November.

Patrick Sharp and Brett Ritchie scored and Kari Lehtonen made 16 saves for the Stars, who have lost two of three.

                        LIGHTNING 4, FLYERS 2

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Alex Killorn and Ryan Callahan scored 12 seconds apart in the third period to help Tampa Bay beat Philadelphia.

The Lightning also got goals from Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov. Andrei Vasilevskiy, coming off consecutive shutouts, stopped 29 shots.

Dale Weise and Ivan Provorov scored for the Flyers, who were coming off a 3-1 win Tuesday night at Florida. Philadelphia is 4-1-1 in the second of back-to-back games.

Steve Mason made several quality stops when the Flyers were short-handed three times in the first 12 minutes of the third before Killorn (13:28) and Callahan (13:40) scored to give Tampa Bay a 3-2 lead.

Kucherov made it 4-2 late in the third.

DEVILS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 4, SO

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Mike Cammalleri had four points in his return to the lineup and Jacob Josefson scored in the shootout as New Jersey defeated Toronto.

Cory Schneider stopped all three Maple Leafs attempts in the tiebreaker, and the Devils overcame an early 3-0 deficit to snap a three-game losing streak, their longest of the season.

Cammalleri had a goal and three assists after missing six games. He spent more than a week with his family after his 5-year-old daughter was hospitalized with pneumonia.

Travis Zajac, Beau Bennett and Yohann Auvitu also scored for New Jersey.

Top draft pick Auston Matthews had two goals and set up another by Nazem Kadri in Toronto's big first period. Matt Martin also scored, and Jhonas Enroth made 26 saves.

                        WILD 3, JETS 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Mikko Koivu, Jonas Brodin and Zach Parise scored to lead Minnesota past road-weary Winnipeg.

Devan Dubnyk made 15 saves for the Wild and has allowed only 13 goals in his last 11 games since Oct. 25, stopping 319 of 332 shots.

Blake Wheeler scored for Winnipeg, which is 0-4 on a five-game road trip - its longest of the season. The Jets have been outscored 15-5 during their worst slide this season.

Koivu's goal was his first in 11 games.

                        • Thursday’s six-pack

Six interesting college basketball scores from Wednesday:

                          — Oklahoma State 97, Georgetown 70— Hoyas are a soft team.

                          — Louisville 68, Old Dominion 62 OT— Surprisingly tense game in the Bahamas.

                          — Cavaliers 137, Blazers 125- Kevin Love scored 34…..in the FIRST QUARTER!!!

                          — Oregon 79, UConn 69— Huskies are 1-4 vs D-I teams and now have injury issues; could be a long winter in Nutmeg State.

                          — Baylor 71, VCU 63— Bears play Michigan State today in semis at the Battle of Atlantis.

                          — North Carolina 71, Wisconsin 56— Tar Heels win Maui Classic; other three times they did that, they made the Final Four. Right now, they’re pretty clearly the best team in the country.

                          Thursday’s List of 13: NFL’s top 10, bottom three teams…….

                          32) Browns— Next weekend will be a little more fun for Cleveland fans; its the Browns’ bye week.

                          31) 49ers— Lost last nine games; play red-hot Dolphins in Miami this week. Chances are that’ll be ten losses in a row.

                          30) Jaguars— Lost last five games, last three by 7 or less points.

                          10) Dolphins— They’ve got lot of good receivers; was mystified why they had less than 100 yards of offense thru 53:00 in LA last week. Not a big Tannehill fan, but he’s on a roll right now.

                          9) Falcons— Someone is going to give Atlanta OC Kyle Shanahan a head coaching job next season; will his dad come along to help out?

                          8) Giants— Seven wins by a total of 27 points; expect to see them pummel Cleveland this week or I’ll list them as a suspect for a quick exit in January.

                          7) Broncos— 7-0 when they score 20+ points, 0-3 when they do not. Still think QB Siemian is a suspect, but as long as he doesn’t screw things up, he’s OK for now. Their defense is that good.

                          6) Redskins— Jay Gruden is an underrated coach; he’s helped make a dysfunctional franchise successful. Washington took lot of grief for drafting Cousins the same year they traded the farm to draft RGIII; seems like a good idea now.

                          5) Chiefs— 18-4 in last 22 games, but offense has struggled last three weeks. Big game in Denver Sunday; NBC chose that game instead of Patriots-Jets.

                          4) Seahawks— Drafting is such an inexact science; Russell Wilson, Joe Montana were 3rd round picks, Tom Brady a 6th round pick. Look at Dak Prescott; he was a 4th round pick after a DUI a month before the draft. Then look at some of the stiffs drafted first. Go figure.

                          3) Raiders— Jack Del Rio was once the catcher on USC’s baseball team, when one of the pitchers was a guy named Mark McGwire.

                          2) Patriots— Will Brady/Belichick retire at same time? Imagine the poor bastards who would have to step into those big shoes? When does Jimmy Garoppolo hit the free agent market?

                          1) Cowboys— Very seldom does a team win/cover nine games in a row, and never, ever with a rookie QB. Interesting game today with the Redskins.

MONTREAL (AP) Max Pacioretty broke a tie 14 seconds into the third period and the Montreal Canadiens beat Carolina 2-1 on Thursday night to end the Hurricanes' winning streak at five games.

Carey Price made 31 saves, and Andrew Shaw also scored for Montreal. The Canadiens improved to 15-4-2 and avenged a 3-2 loss last week in Carolina with backup Al Montoya in goal.

Elias Lindholm scored for Carolina, and Cam Ward stopped 21 shots. The Hurricanes dropped to 8-7-4.

Pacioretty put Montreal ahead early the third when he took the rebound of Tomas Plekanec's shot off the end boards and banked it in off Ward. Carolina coach Bill Peters challenged that Plekanec was offside on the play but the goal stood up to video review.
