“I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making a decision to put a mosque there,” Obama said yesterday in Panama City, Florida, during a trip with his family to the Gulf of Mexico. “I was commenting very specifically on the right that people have that dates back to our founding. That is what our country is about. "

"As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country,” Obama said at the dinner. “That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances.”

        “Just to be clear,”:

At the iftar dinner, Obama cast his vote with the mosque builders. And then he pulled back.

And then he had his spokesman pull back the pullback. “Just to be clear, the president is not backing off in any way from the comments he made last night,” the White House’s Bill Burton said Saturday. “It is not his role as president to pass judgment on every local project. But it is his responsibility to stand up for the Constitutional principle of religious freedom and equal treatment for all Americans. What he said last night, and reaffirmed today, is that if a church, a synagogue or a Hindu temple can be built on a site, you simply cannot deny that right to those who want to build a mosque.”

Still not seeing what's wrong with his statement of standing up for equal treatment for ALL Americans.

Should he also demand that the Byodo-In Buddhist Temple, which was built near Pearl Harbor, be torn down?

These are places of worship, not a shrine to terrorists.

That has been my point. He should have said nothing.

I have no issue - NO ISSUE - with the building of a mosque as long as ALL is done correctly.

I also have no issue about those that do not want to pray to the God that I believe in. My issue is that because the minority doesn't want prayers in schools and other events, the majority suffer. Let those that want to pray, pray. If they don't want to pray, don't. But don't stop me from praying.

My issue is the sensitive nature and place it will be. All this will do is cause more problems and probably more racial incidents between BOTH sides. And, AGAIN, the majority does not want this mosque built there but the minority does.

Talk about reading and processing. BL posted it was a Constituitional issue and I asked how? Thanks for the spell check since you can't understand the posts otherwise I guess.

And to explain it to 'you" and your kind, I used the tobacco and your gay shop as examples of local zoning and laws trumping freedom of speech.

To explain it to you and your kind it's a ridiculous comparison. There are local zoning laws which prohibit such things in most cities.

Show proof of ANY zoning ordinance that prohibits a Mosque from being built in Manhattan.....

From my understanding, there are NO zoning ordinances that this violates. Please post the post number that I typed there was. Thanks!

Maybe if you re read BL's post, he is stating it is a Constituitional issue and I asked how. CAN YOU UNDERSTAND THIS?

A "Fox" poll showed that 61% of those polled thought that they should be allowed to build the Mosque downtown. 34% were against it.

                          You've got the majority backwards....

I don't understand the wisdom of them wanting to build it there. They are only opening themselves up for harassment. But I have met with many Muslims in my area, and they all want to be treated equally. They love this country just as much as anyone else and want to be accepted. They are NOT ALL terrorists or religious fanatics.

and FWIW. I don't have a problem with your kid praying in school. But I do have a problem when everyone is suppose to pray or believe in the same God.

That's right. There are NO zoning ordinances that this violates. No local or federal law either. They are building it on 'private' owned property, blocks away from ground zero. For the president of the US to come in and say, "you are not allowed to build your mosque here," would be tantamount to telling them they do NOT have a right to practice their religion. That is in direct violation of the 'Constitution.' And we all know it....
