Not to change the subject, but unions are a large reason why so many major industries (auto, airlines) are going belly up. Unions were definitely needed many, many years ago when they were first set up, but the have lost their focus. They are no longer their just to protect employees, but to get as much as they can. They have bitten off the hand the feeds them. I know several guys that as baggage handlers that were making $80k a year. Now, I'm not bagging (pun intended) on luggage workers, but that is a $25k a year job, not three times. We have unions to thank for that. Pilots, same thing. I've got friends whose dads are pilots and they were making $300k a year. The plans fucking fly themselves nowadays (the pilots even tell me that). They deserve a nice check, but $300k? Unions are a huge reason for the downfall of the auto industry as well. There is simply no accountability anymore b/c you can't fire anyone. Sorry...I digress.

I agree unions are a thing of the past and today arent nearly what they were 20 years ago and I do agree with everything you said. I used know a janitor at Ford Motor who was taking in nearly 100K/year with overtime.....but concessions have been made and once we get out of this recession things will hopefully go back to the they were in the mid 90's.

But yes I do agree with you that unions did get out of hand but w/o them blue collar workers would have nothing. Lets get real though if I was on the other side of the table representing the corporate world I would want to abolish unions as well but I am not and many people that I know have made lives for themselves while being part of these unions and once again when comparing which party favors unions its the Democrats.

I would like to know why most support the Republican party though....maybe I am missing out on what you see. I am not here to dog on Republicans; I just want to see what they offer people. I do think its stupid though to say I vote Republican because Democrats won't seal off the border or promote welfare because lets get real Republicans are fixing these problems but they do pander votes that way by making it seem Democrats ignore these problems.

My perspective on wages is simply supply & demand. The demand has gone down on the "jobs" you referred to, but the demand is skyrocketing for the construction trades and wages are starting to rise to meet that demand. I am in the construction industry and bid jobs in a 14 state area in the central US and cannot find help that wants to show up and learn a trade to replace our qualified but aging staff. A true tradesman is worth his weight in gold right now and the wages are starting to reflect that mostly without the help of the unions.

Of course the construction cost are going up also and I really think that this is truely the very tip of the iceberg.
