I don't know what they can do about the whistle rule.
If you hear a whistle, many stop playing.
If they say a whistle isn't automatically the end of the play you're going to have all sorts of late hits, etc.
The solution is to train officials to wait a couple of seconds to blow the whistle on ALL plays. They can still mark a guy down at the proper spot but if they just hold off on blowing the whistle for a couple of seconds it would allow play to continue and the replay could sort out the call.
FOR WHAT ITS WORTH: Hochuli made an honest error. That is much better than the atrocious replay call by the homer ref in the Fresno-Wisconsin game.
There's a reason teams don't like to play at WAC stadiums. The refs are unethical. Cincy got jobbed in Hawaii a couple of years ago and there have been other complaints as well.

Wisconsin got a real WAC job and overcame it
I agree with the late hits.We are all taught to play till the whistle blows. What happens to a ref when he takes 3 extra seconds to blow a play dead and someone gets hit and is out for the rest of the season. How much hate mail will that ref get.Next thing we know we will think God has money on the game cause the wind started blowing harder when a guy lined up to kick a game winning field goal.

And Fresno was jobbed big time in Oregon a couple of years ago. I guess officials never get a call wrong? It's called home field advantage and it happens almost regularly in every conference. The guy made one bad call that game.
The difference big is, when a non BCS team gets jobbed and loses ONE game whether at home or on the road like Fresno did in Oregon, they are out of any BCS contention for that entire year.

I agree too. It was a joke and a homer BS call all the way. Wisky was lucky to get out of that place with a win after playing 11 on 12 all night. They were the better team and luckily did though!
Wac Stadiums are a joke. If it's not paid off refs, it's blue turf!

So I was in Vegas and couldn't really hear what was going on during this game (Wisconsin/Fresno) but doesn't the road team usually get the refs from their conference in a non conference game?
Like Rook said, the guy is human. SD fans need to get over it and blame their porous defense for the loss. Heck, even after the play they still had to convert a 3rd/10, 4th and short and then a 2 point conversion. Make a play and win the damn game!
And Griz is right too...how in the world do they plan on addressing the 'inadvertent whistle' when players stop playing when the whistle blows? I applaud him for fessin' up...but I think I read someplace that officials are taught on close plays, do not blow the whistle as you always have replay as a back-up.
I also found it interesting that we saw the same rule on the placement of the football twice this weekend, the other time being in the Dallas game on Jackson's premature jocularity and it being placed on the 1.

It's only an issue on passing plays. If the ball doesn't pass the line of scrimmage or advance a yard or two downfield let the play continue as if it was a fumble. Late hits aren't an issue if it's played as a potential fumble.
They don't blow the whistle on fumbles that are later reversed. Giants/Rams game is a perfect example. A catch by Plaxico was ruled a fumble on the field. They play continued. Granted the whistle wasn't blown but the refs shouldn't blow the whistle so quickly on a 'tuck' type of play.

They often bring their own refs and that didn't happen this time. Wisconsin's coach was screaming about it before the game.
Kaz, I do think the WAC ref issue is worse than other conferences. If the schools don't do something about it, they'll never get quality teams to play road games there.
I guarantee you fresno is on a permanent blacklist now. That is not in their longterm issue
I feel bad for Ed. It's life and shit happens. I know S.D. fans are pissed but it is only week 2 and they must play on ..........
They did have 2 chances on defense to stop the same exact pass play once for the win and didn't get it done.
I agree.....after reading this I looked up his email and sent him one...told him that people will forget soon enough....told him to go the the gym and get his swoll on!
