USA Today/Eric Smith
No. 1 Southern California vs. No. 16 Fresno State, 10:15 p.m.
UCLA may still be left on the Trojans schedule. Fresno State, however, will be their toughest opponent. This would be the ultimate prize for giant-killer Pat Hill and the Bulldogs. They could make SC fans and the BCS sweat for most of this game. Southern California 40, Fresno State 23.
No. 3 Miami vs. Georgia Tech, 7:45 p.m.
Thanks to Hurricane Wilma, both teams will miss out on a much-needed week off late in the season. The Yellow Jackets probably would have enjoyed a trip to South Beach instead of facing the surging Hurricanes. Miami 35, Georgia Tech 10.
No. 4 LSU at Mississippi, 7:45 p.m.
The Tigers are firmly in control of the SEC West with the Rebels and Arkansas left on their schedule. The biggest challenge this week may be coming down after the big win at Alabama. LSU 28, Mississippi 14.
No. 5 Penn State at Michigan State, 4 p.m.
Hard to believe Michigan State was one of the Big Ten favorites entering conference play and there were questions about Penn State. Nittany Lions fans are hardly complaining with a trip to the Orange Bowl likely after dismantling the Spartans. Penn State 33, Michigan State 21.
No. 6 Virginia Tech at Virginia, noon
Frank Beamer and his team needed the week off to catch their breath after facing the suffocating defense of Miami. The Cavaliers are not going to be a pushover. They've already beaten Florida State at home and would love to put a fork in the Hokies' BCS chances. Virginia Tech 21, Virginia 17.
No. 7 Notre Dame vs. Syracuse, 2:30 p.m.
Longtime NFL assistants Charlie Weis and Greg Robinson are less than a year into their respective jobs. Weis already had a new 10-year contract. Robinson is just hoping for a second win after beating Buffalo in the second week of the season. Notre Dame 44, Syracuse 9.
No. 8 Alabama at No. 12 Auburn, 3:30 p.m.
Crazy as it sounds, the Tide fans probably would gladly have lost last week to LSU and given up a shot at the national title in exchange for a win against their hated rival. Unfortunately, they'll be disappointed for the second straight Saturday. Auburn 16, Alabama 12.
No. 9 Ohio State at No. 17 Michigan, 1 p.m.
Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler would be the first to tell you that the Big Game is decided on defense. The Buckeyes have one. The Wolverines do not. Ohio State 24, Michigan 10.
No. 10 Oregon vs. Oregon State, 6:45 p.m.
Don't lump me in the with the rest of the media that is failing to recognize the great job Mike Bellotti has done or ignoring the Ducks as a BCS bowl contender. Finishing 10-1 is quite an accomplishment for a team that started unranked and lost its quarterback midway through the year. Oregon 28, Oregon State 14.
No. 14 Georgia vs. Kentucky, 12:30 p.m.
Not exactly the opponent that the Bulldogs want to beat to clinch the SEC East, but that is their own fault after blowing a late lead against Auburn. Georgia 38, Kentucky 13.
No. 19 Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma, noon
The road has not been kind to the Red Raiders, who struggled against Nebraska and Baylor and were embarrassed by Texas and Oklahoma State. Back at home in front of their tortilla-throwing fans, Tech should get its explosive offense back on track against the Sooners and their sub-par secondary. Texas Tech 41, Oklahoma 30.
No. 21 South Carolina vs. Clemson, 7 p.m.
How historic has this season been for the Gamecocks? Steve Spurrier has led the school to its first win at Tennessee and first defeat of Florida since 1939. Beating the Tigers for the first time since 2001 will have to wait one more year. Clemson 23, South Carolina 21.
No. 23 Boston College at Maryland, noon
A great comeback against North Carolina has the Terrapins one win away from bowl eligibility. You have to wonder about the motivation of the Eagles, who are likely locked into the Champs Sports Bowl win or lose. Maryland 21, Boston College 20.
No. 25 UTEP vs. UAB, 6:15 p.m.
The Miners clinch a spot in the inaugural Conference USA championship game in style against the mistake-prone Blazers. UTEP 31, UAB 24.
Last week's record: 13-8 (8-11-2)
This season's record: 166-38 (104-88-6)
