        Games of the Week
No. 9 Ohio State at 17 Michigan — Saturday at 1 p.m. ET
        Line:
        OSU -3

It's win and wait. The winner of, arguably, college football's best rivalry will win the Big Ten's automatic BCS bid if Penn State loses to Michigan State later in the day. With each team realistically out of the at-large BCS process, the worst the winner can hope for will likely be the Capital One Bowl, but winning this game would be reward enough. The two have traded road wins for the last two seasons with Ohio State almost ruining Michigan's Big Ten BCS hopes last year in a 37-21 stomping.

This has been a crazy season for the Wolverines with three early losses getting the Maize and Blue fans grumbling. With a four-game winning streak, including clutch wins over Penn State and Iowa, Lloyd Carr's club is in a position to win its third straight Big Ten title if it gets help from the Spartans. Ohio State lost to Texas and Penn State, no shame there, and is the hottest team outside of Austin and L.A. scoring more than 40 points in each of its last four games outscoring its last five opponents by an average of 42-15.

        >Ohio State can't turn the ball over. As long as Michigan doesn't get any big breaks, and is limited to a few big plays, the Buckeye running game and pass rush should lead the way to a tough win.

        Prediction: Ohio State 24 .. Michigan 20

No. 16 Fresno State at No. 1 USC — Saturday at 10:15 p.m. ET
        Line:
        USC -24
        ON FSN

O.K. Fresno, you wanted your shot at the big-time, and you've got it. The Bulldogs finally got over the WAC hump with an impressive 27-7 victory over arch-nemesis Boise State as the crown jewel in the seven-game winning streak, but a victory over the Trojans might mean a BCS bid and could get some arguing about possible Rose Bowl consideration.

But first, Fresno State has to actually beat the nation's No. 1 team that isn't just winning, but is winning in brutally efficient fashion. Ever since the close call against Notre Dame a month ago, USC has cranked out four straight wins by a grand total of 192-68. The shot at the national title is there with two more wins, but Matt Leinart and the boys might have a battle on their hands. Fresno State doesn't think this is a show, it thinks it's a fight.

Fresno State will make this very, very interesting for about a half, and then USC will adjust and go on a big second half run to put Pat Hill's pesky team away.

        Prediction: USC 48 ... Fresno State 23

        More Top 25 Matchups
Georgia Tech at No. 3 Miami (FL)
        Saturday at 7:45 p.m. ET
        Line:
        Miami
        -17.5
Georgia Tech is looking to improve its bowl position, and it can do so considerably with a win over the ACC's hottest team. Miami proved that the win over Va Tech wasn't a fluke by blowing out Wake Forest last week, but it still has to beat the Yellow Jackets this week and UVA next week to represent the Coastal Division in the ACC title game. Georgia Tech was on a three-game winning streak before last week's 27-17 loss to Virginia. With Georgia ahead, it needs another win or risk a likely three-game losing streak and the possibility of being knocked out of the ACC's bowl order. Ga Tech has the defense to keep this from being a blowout, but no one's doing much against the Miami defense.
        Prediction: Miami 23 ... Georgia Tech 10

No. 4 LSU at Ole Miss
        Saturday at 7:45 p.m. ET
        Line:
        LSU
        -16.5
LSU has control of the SEC West race after a thrilling 16-13 overtime win over Auburn. The Tigers can't clinch this week with a win over Ole Miss needing to still get by Arkansas next week, but they're in a position to win the SEC title, and maybe even shoot for the Rose Bowl with a lot of breaks. Ole Miss is out of the post-season hunt after losing to Auburn and Arkansas over the last two weeks, but the first year of the Ed Orgeron era can be considered a success with wins over LSU and Mississippi State to close out on a high note. Ole Miss will treat this like a bowl game, but it won't be enough to overcome the tremendous LSU defensive front seven; the Rebels don't have enough firepower.
        Prediction: LSU 27 ... Ole Miss 10

No. 5 Penn State at Michigan State
        Saturday at 4 p.m. ET
        Line:
        PSU
        -7.5
It's one and done for Penn State needing to beat the dying Spartans to earn the Big Ten's BCS bid and finish the regular season an amazing 10-1. Michigan State is on a two-game losing streak losing five of its last six games in ugly fashion. This has turned into one of college football's under-the-radar rivalries, and it can crank up another notch if this turns into any sort of a dramatic classic. However, history would show that this might not be close, one way or the other. There's no sane or rational explanation why or how Michigan State can beat a rested and pumped up Penn State team, but a Spartan win has been the call for the last six weeks; it doesn't feel right to abandon the ship now.
Prediction: Michigan State 21 ... Penn State 20

Syracuse at No. 6 Notre Dame
        Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET
        Line:
        Notre Dame
        -34.5
It'd be hard to concoct a match up this late in the season between two programs heading in more opposite directions. Notre Dame has cruised to three consecutive blowouts, bringing them just two victories away from a ninth win and a likely at-large invite to a BCS bowl game. Led by QB Brady Quinn, the Irish offense has been unstoppable all year, scoring at least 30 points in all but one game. Playing in South Bend is the closest thing Syracuse will come to the BCS in a long time. They're bad. Historically bad. Longing-for-Paul-Pasqualoni bad. The only good news to come out of this season was last week's retirement of Jim Brown's No. 44. The bad news is that the 69-year old Brown could probably crack this year's two-deep.
        Prediction: Notre Dame 45 ... Syracuse 9

No. 7 Virginia Tech at Virginia
        Saturday at Noon ET
        Line:
        Va Tech
        -7
This might not be the biggest of rivalries, but it's a nasty battle that takes on even more significance in the new ACC divisional format. Virginia Tech hits the field for the first time since its painfully ugly 27-7 loss to Miami ruined all national title hopes. However, the ACC title is still within reach needing to win out and hoping for the Canes to lose to Georgia Tech or Virginia. The Cavaliers are on a nice two game winning streak after convincingly beating Georgia Tech 27-17. If by some miracle the Yellow Jackets beat Miami this week, Virginia will have a shot at winning the Coastal Division title by winning out. The Hokies have won five of the last six battles between the two.
        Prediction: Virginia Tech 27 ... Virginia 13

No. 8 Alabama at No. 11 Auburn
        Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
        Line:
        Auburn
        -7
It's the nastiest rivalry in all of college football, and possibly all of sports, with the two teams better than they've been in years. With 17 wins between the two, you have to go back to 1994 for the last time the bitter rivals have been this good. The Iron Bowl was big last year when an unbeaten Auburn team needed to win to stay alive in the national title hunt, but this year's version might be even bigger with the SEC West title on the line if LSU loses one of its final two games against either Ole Miss or Arkansas. Bama's dream season might have ended with last week's overtime loss to LSU, but it's still very much alive for an at large BCS. The Tigers have won three straight in the series.
        Prediction: Auburn 16 ... Alabama 13

Oregon State at No. 10 Oregon
        Saturday at 6:45 p.m. ET
        Line:
        Oregon
        -13.5
        ON FSN

The Civil War, as always, has fans on both sides riled up, but there's a little more on the line than there has been in recent history. Oregon is hoping beyond all reasonable hope for an at-large BCS bowl bid with a win this week and an impressive 10-1 record, but it hasn't been all that impressive in recent weeks in close wins over mediocre teams like Washington State and Arizona. Oregon State has seen its good season go into the tank winning one of its last four games with last week's 20-17 loss to Stanford making a win over the Ducks necessary to get to a bowl. With starting QB Matt Moore out with a knee injury, the Beavers have a tough hill to climb.
        Prediction: Oregon 38 ... Oregon State 20
        Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
        Kentucky at No. 14 Georgia
        Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET
        Line:
        UGA
        -27
All of a sudden, the apparent walk in the park looks like it might be a bit of a battle after Kentucky's shocking 48-43 win over Vanderbilt. The Wildcats have found an offense over the last few games and have won two of their last three. With Tennessee having major problems, UK has an honest shot at finishing with a decent 5-6 record if it can pull off the upset against Georgia this week, and can probably assure at least another year of Rich Brooks as the program's head coach. The Dawgs have to win this week to represent the East in the SEC title game, but they have to gear it up after losing two straight emotionally draining games against Florida and Auburn.
        Prediction: Georgia 38 ... Kentucky 16
        Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax

Clemson at No. 19 South Carolina
        Saturday at 7 p.m. ET
        Line:
        Clemson
        -1.5
The last time we saw these two teams they were duking it out showing more fight after the game than during. The ugliness kept both teams from accepting bowl bids and became the final chapter in the Lou Holtz era at South Carolina. If you had told Gamecock fans right after the 29-7 loss that one year later, Steve Spurrier would be the head coach and the team would still be in the mix for the SEC title, they'd have thought you were nuts. The Tigers have won seven of the last eight battles between the two with three straight victories since the 20-15 USC win in 2001. With the season appearing to be slipping away, Tommy Bowden's team has won two straight, and four of its last five, coming off an impressive 35-14 win over Florida State. Now it's bowl eligible and pushing for a seven-win season and a strong post-season game.
        Prediction: Clemson 20 .. South Carolina 16
        Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
Oklahoma at No. 21 Texas Tech
        Saturday at Noon ET
        Line:
        Tex Tech
        -7.5
        ON FSN

While Texas has wrapped up the South and will represent the Division in the Big 12 title game, this is a big matchup for the number two slot and will go a long way in the bowl pecking order. Oklahoma has flown under the radar after a bad start, but the three losses have come to TCU, UCLA and Texas, who have combined to lose two games; OU isn't as bad as you think. Texas Tech is coming off a bizarre loss to Oklahoma State ruining a possible ten-win regular season, but it can still be in the mix for the Cotton Bowl with a win this week. Without too many chances on its schedule for a respectable win, Tech needs this to get more national respect. Adrian Peterson and the Sooner running game will dominate the first half, but Hodges and the Red Raider offense will rebound in time to pull off a tight fourth quarter comeback.
        Prediction: Texas Tech 34 ... Oklahoma 31
        Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax

No. 23 Boston College at Maryland
        Saturday at Noon ET
        Line:
        BC
        -2.5
At 5-4, Maryland needs to either beat Boston College this week or at NC State next week to become bowl eligible, and the bowls are watching. Representatives from the Peach Bowl and Champs Sports Bowl will be in attendance, while all the other ACC bowl games have more than a passing interest in the outcome of this game. The ACC will likely have more bowl eligible teams than contracted spots, so appearances are important. Boston College is also in the hunt for the Peach Bowl and is hoping for the Gator Bowl if it wins its final regular season game of the year and gets a lot of other help.
        Prediction: Boston College 20 ... Maryland 16
        Complete Fearless Prediction | GameTrax
        UAB at No. 24 UTEP
        Saturday at 6:15 p.m. ET
        Line:
        UTEP
        -8
The C-USA game of the week features the league's two most prolific passing games and a pair of teams that are going in opposite directions. UTEP is the conference flag-bearer, and as of this week, the only team in the league that's ranked in the AP poll. With a win in one of their final two games, the high-scoring Miners will coast into the Dec. 3 title game. UAB has never recovered from getting shocked by SMU on Oct. 8, repeatedly losing close games to earn the label of most disappointing C-USA team of 2005. The Blazers still have Darrell Hackney behind center, which means they've always got a shot to pull an upset.
        Prediction: UTEP 34... UAB 28

                Miami herald ncaa

                Jeff Shain's predictions
                • Miami 37, Georgia Tech 16: Wilma postponement probably helped UM, as QB Kyle Wright was nursing a sprained thumb when game originally was set. Last week's five-TD outing vs. Wake Forest seems to remove any lingering concern. With BCS marbles to play for, motivation won't be a worry. (Favorite: UM by 17 ½.)

                • Auburn 17, Alabama 13: What could be worse for Bama than getting knocked out of the Rose Bowl chase? How about a fourth straight loss in the Iron Bowl? Tigers have one of the SEC's two legit offenses, and struggling Tide again will find it difficult to keep pace. (Favorite: Auburn by 7.)

                • Ohio State 26, Michigan 17: Wolverines have tallied 74 points in past two games, but did it at the expense of two of the Big Ten's worst defenses. RB Mike Hart (ankle) could return after missing the past 2 ½ games, but he will find tough sledding against OSU's A.J. Hawk & Co. (Favorite: OSU by 3.)

                • Penn State 27, Michigan State 14: Anyone seen the Spartans' offense? The same attack that got them to 4-0 seems to have dried up with a combined 39 points the past two weeks. JoePa's boys are fresh after open date and still need victory here to lock up unexpected Big Ten crown. (Favorite: PSU by 7.)

                • Texas Tech 34, Oklahoma 28: Once-vaunted Sooners defense hasn't given up fewer than 24 points in past month, and that came vs. sputtering Nebraska. That leaves QB Rhett Bomar trying to keep up with Red Raiders attack smarting from last week's upset by Oklahoma State. (Favorite: Tech by 7.)

                • Southern California 41, Fresno State 21: Trojans needed a challenge to keep sharp with UCLA still two weeks off, and Bulldogs should fill the role nicely. QB Paul Pinegar should dent SC defense for a couple of TDs, but WAC slate can't prepare you for Leinart/Bush/White triumvirate. (Favorite: USC by 23 ½.)

                • South Carolina 20, Clemson 17: First Tennessee, then the Gators. Now the chance to torment a Bowden (Tommy) in the regular-season finale. Is Steve Spurrier loving this stretch or what? Stats point to Clemson, but does anyone dare go against the Ol' Ball Coach's mojo now? (Favorite: Clemson by 2 ½.)

                • Last week: 4-3. It's too long to detail here, but bad karma from a 1990s gig in South Carolina must still have ways of finding me. Against spread: 3-3-1.

                • Season: 44-28 (37-33-1 vs. spread).

                  10:15 p.m. ET (FSN) No. 16 Fresno St. (8-1) at No. 1 USC (10-0)
A Bulldogs victory (and no, that's not what the green "V" on the back of their helmets stands for) could be the type of seminal moment that, should there ever be a Pac-12, fans in the San Joaquin Valley (that's what it stands for) would recall as the program's tipping point. Fresno is one of only two schools (the other being Texas) ranked in the top 10 in both scoring defense and scoring offense. But the Trojans are not New Mexico State or San Jose State.
                  USC 38, Fresno State 14

                  3:30 p.m. ET (CBS) No. 8 Alabama (9-1) at No. 11 Auburn (8-2)
Reader Brian Harbach of Atlanta, an Auburn alum, correctly picked all three SEC games on last week's pickoff, so he's writing this item. "The best defense in the SEC (Alabama) matches up with the best offense (Auburn) in a game with more than pride at stake. The Tigers have won three straight Iron Bowls. The last loss, in 2001, is known around Toomer's Corner as 'Black Saturday.' It'll be a darker day for the Tide should they lose a fourth straight to 'little brother' -- and with it all hope of a BCS bowl."
                  Auburn 17, Alabama 10

                  1 p.m. ET (ESPN) No. 9 Ohio St. (8-2) at No. 17 Michigan (7-3)
How fitting is it that a man named Carr is the coach at a campus so close to the Motor City? Asked after Saturday's defeat of Indiana how long it would take him to start thinking about the Buckeyes, the Wolverine coach replied, "I don't think you ever stop thinking about them." So this Carr is driven. The Wolverines could salvage a season that began 3-3 with a fifth straight win Saturday, while a Buckeyes victory would allow their fans to fire lasers of hate toward South Bend, Ind.
                  Michigan 24, Ohio State 22

7:45 p.m. ET (ESPN) Georgia Tech (6-3) at No. 3 Miami (Fla.) (8-1)
Yellow Jackets coach Chan Gailey just received a five-year contract extension at Tech, guaranteeing that no Division I-A football coach will have a shorter drive to The Varsity (it's just across I-75 from campus) for lunch for five more years. Miami's varsity features the nation's top-ranked pass defense, which will make for many short drives by a Tech offense whose three-year starter at quarterback, Reggie Ball, is completing less than 50 percent of his passes this season.
                  Miami 29, Georgia Tech 7

4 p.m. ET (ESPN) No. 5 Penn St. (9-1) at Michigan St. (5-5)
On one hand, the home team has won by a margin of no less than 24 points in each of the past three seasons. On the other -- we're assuming that you have two hands; if not, please substitute feet -- the Spartans have only defeated one team (Notre Dame) that will finish the season with a winning record. It's BCS bowl eligibility (Penn State) versus Fort Worth Bowl eligibility (Michigan State). Don't hate me, JoePa.
Michigan State 31, Penn State 24

Noon ET (ESPN) No. 7 Virginia Tech (8-1) at Virginia (6-3)
The Cavaliers, who end their season with a Hokies-Hurricanes combo, win the Vanessa Williams memorial "Save the Best for Last" prize (while Auburn fans remind us that the Tigers are finishing up with Georgia and Alabama, which rates a close second). Virginia is 5-0 at Scott Stadium this season, but the Hokies have had two weeks to listen to how overrated they are following the 27-7 Miami debacle. Expect Mike Imoh, Cedric Humes, Branden Ore and Marcus Vick to run wild. Sometimes the snow comes down in June, you know?
                  Virginia Tech 35, Virginia 16

                  6:45 p.m. (FSN) Oregon St. (5-5) at No. 10 Oregon (9-1)
The Civil War is in the hands of a pair of second lieutenants. Beavers starting QB Matt Moore is doubtful while his counterpart, the Ducks' Kellen Clemens, is out for the season with a knee injury. Oregon State will start sophomore Ryan Gunderson while the Ducks could go with either Dennis Dixon or Brady Leaf, who bailed them out a week ago in Pullman. The Beavers last won in Eugene, located just 47 forested miles from Corvallis, in 1993.
                  Oregon 38, Oregon State 14

7 p.m. ET (No television) Clemson (6-4) at No. 19 South Carolina (7-3)
Steve Spurrier ending his season with an in-state rivalry game against a Bowden. Where have we seen this before? Not the NFL -- Washington is not even a state. Spurrier's squad, winners of five in a row, is feeling Gamecocky as their Palmetto State rivals come to town. But Clemson has won three in a row in this series and the Tigers are no strangers to top 20 teams this autumn.
                  Clemson 26, South Carolina 22

Noon ET (FSN) Oklahoma (6-3) at No. 21 Texas Tech (8-2)
Someone smart -- not me -- noted recently that the combined record of the three schools that have beaten the Sooners this season is 29-2. Someone less smart -- guess who -- just noticed that the Red Raiders have not lost in Lubbock since 2001 to a Big 12 team that did not win that season's conference championship. The Sooners' resurgence -- four straight wins -- is duly noted, but their 63rd-best pass defense will take a hurtin'.
                  Texas Tech 35, Oklahoma 27

12:30 p.m. ET (Jefferson Pilot) Vanderbilt (4-6) at Tennessee (4-5)
I'm dubbing this the "Whose Postseason Banquet Would You Less Want to Attend?" Bowl. You've got Vandy, which, after starting the season 4-0 and daring to think bowl game, has lost six straight. Then there're the Vols, whose quarterbacks Erik Ainge and Rick Clausen convene in coach Phil Fulmer's office and play a high-stakes game of Rock, Paper, Scissors to see who gets the start each Saturday. The You-Won't-Believe-It stat of the week is that Clausen actually has a higher passer efficiency rating than the Commodores' Jay Cutler.
                  Tennessee 27, Vanderbilt 21
