What was supposed to be a quirky non-conference battle has lost its luster after Vanderbilt's stunning 28-24 win over Arkansas last week. While Hog fans are now looking at their watches to figure out when time will be up in the Houston Nutt era, things could quickly change with a huge road upset.
It has seemed like months since USC last played getting two weeks to rest from all the running it did up and down the field in the 63-17 win over Hawaii two weeks ago. Arkansas might be reeling a bit, but this is still a great test for the defending national champions before next week's beartrap at Oregon.

Arkansas isn't some Sun Belt also-ran, this is a decent SEC team with the beef on the lines and speed on both sides of the ball to hang around with the Trojans. No, the Hogs don't have enough to win, but they won't be kicked around.

College Football Saturday on FSN
Rice at No. 2 Texas — Saturday at 7 p.m. ET

Oh, this will be ugly. Texas has a spot in the Rose Bowl and a shot at the national title all locked up as long as it's able to run the table. There are landmines down the road, like in two weeks at Missouri, but this isn't one of them. Rice has lost seven in a row including a season-opening 63-21 stomping at UCLA. The Owls gave Texas a bit of a push last year in a 35-13 Longhorn win.
Was the game-winning touchdown catch against Ohio State the moment Limas Sweed grows into a star? He has the size and the talent, but last week's scoring grab was his first. Will Young rely on him as a number one target? That would be a big boost to the Longhorn national title hopes. Rice's talk about adding more of a passing game didn't come to fruition last week. Joel Armstrong only completed five of nine passes for 32 yards, and Chase Clement wasn't much better completing three of eight throws. The Owl running game will have a hard time getting going on the fast Longhorn D, so Armstrong has to make more plays through the air.

Rice will be down two touchdowns before it gets off the bus.

Game of the Week
5 Tennessee at 6 Florida — Saturday at 8 p.m. ET

It's not an overstatement to say this could turn out to be the season's most important game with ramifications for the national title, as well as the SEC championship. It's the first real test for Urban Meyer in the big-time spotlight facing the best team has coached against since, well, ever.
In his two years at Bowling Green and two years at Utah, Meyer only coached against two teams that were ranked at the time, Oregon in 2003 and Pittsburgh in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl, with neither higher than 19. Tennessee had a shaky start with a tougher-than-expected 17-10 win over UAB, but it had the last two weeks to prepare and focus on nothing but Meyer's offense. This should be a classic on par with last year's epic 30-28 Volunteer win.

Each team will trade some big shots, but expect more of a defensive battle than the normal fireworks display the two usually put on. When just about everything appears even, go with the better quarterback on the home team. This might not be Leak's Heisman coming out party, but it'll get him in the discussion.

With all due respect to West Virginia and North Carolina, Louisville's schedule stinks. Some are predicting a spot in the Rose Bowl for the Cardinals based on the slate more than anything else. Coming off a shaky 31-24 win over Kentucky two weeks ago, Louisville is looking for an impressive performance in its home opener to start to earn the national acclaim its receiving. Oregon State needed a gut-check to get past Boise State 30-27 in a solid comeback, and it could use this win before dealing with Arizona State, Washington State and Cal over the next three weeks. There should be several big plays and lots of offense.

Eastern Michigan at No. 14 Michigan

After two straight uneven performances, Michigan looks to get back on track and start looking like Michigan again before dealing with the Big Ten opener at Wisconsin. Eastern Michigan might appear to be nothing more than a speed bump, but this is an explosive Eagle attack with enough playmakers to make it interesting for a little while. After a tough 28-26 loss to Cincinnati, EMU thumped UL Lafayette 31-10 and would like a little confidence booster before taking on Central Michigan in its MAC opener next week. Michigan will win and the offense will start to look better, but it won't get ugly until late.

SMU is riding high after the stunning 21-10 win over TCU. Considering the decent performance in the 28-23 loss to Baylor, Phil Bennett's team might actually be growing into something decent. There are still several holes in the Mustangs, but they have more confidence after thumping the team that beat Oklahoma. Texas A&M has had two weeks to sit and stew after the heartbreaking last second loss to Clemson. The Aggies have to start improving tackling and getting the receivers involved this week. SMU isn't a speedbump anymore, but it's not good enough to beat the Aggies.

No. 25 Virginia at Syracuse

Just how good is Virginia? One of the more schizophrenic programs in America, the Cavaliers are chock full of former blue-chip recruits, but have been up-and-down under Al Groh and played an average game in the opener with Western Michigan. The absence of Ahmad Brooks, who's still recovering from knee surgery, takes away from this game's appeal. Syracuse plays an old-school, physical brand of defense that's a pleasure to watch. RB Damien Rhodes aside, their offense, however, is bland and ill-equipped at this time to effectively run Greg Robinson's new West Coast system.

Louisiana-Monroe at No. 7 Georgia

If UL Monroe isn't the worst team in college football right now, it's in the running. The Indians have the honor of being the only D-I team to lose to a DI-AA team this year with a 27-23 loss to Northwestern State followed up by a 38-0 loss at Wyoming. This is a better team than it has played like so far, but Georgia isn't the team to go against when you're trying to right the ship. Since this is sure to be a blowout, it's an important chance to give Georgia backup QB Joe Tereshinski some meaningful work. Yes, D.J. Shockley needs to play well after completing 8 of 17 passes for 112 yards and two INTs vs. South Carolina, but he'll be fine. His running style and injury history means UGA might be one unlucky play away from turning its title hopes over to Tereshinski.

Michigan State at No. 10 Notre Dame

Notre Dame is everyone's "hot" team after two impressive victories to kickoff the Charlie Weis era. Irish fans are cautiously optimistic that this is the start of something really big as the team treads through the brutal early part of the schedule. At the very least, there's a buzz about Notre Dame football again. The team isn't winning on lucky bounces and turnovers for scores like it did at the beginning of the Ty Willingham era; this team is flat-out beating people up. Now comes Michigan State with an impressive offense good enough, when it's on, to hang 40 on anyone in the country. This can be MSU's announcement that it intends to be a player in the 2005 season, or it'll be Notre Dame's statement that it needs to be respected as one of the best teams in America.

No. 13 Miami (FL) at No. 20 Clemson

It's mid-September and Miami could be out of the ACC title race with a repeat of last year's 24-17 loss to Clemson. The 'Canes might have lost the opener to FSU 10-7, but it still didn't lose much national respect as QB Kyle Wright held up well against the constant 'Nole pressure, at least better than the FSU QBs did, while the defense was fantastic. Even so, it was a big loss in conference play meaning there can't be any more slipups. Clemson showed tremendous heart in two of the most fun games of the early season with a 25-24 last-second win over Texas A&M and a gutty 28-24 win at Maryland. Even so, the jury is still out.


Prediction: Miami 24 ... Clemson 16

San Diego State at No. 9 Ohio State

Ohio State is coming off the gut-wrenching loss to Texas looking to get back on track before jumping into the Big Ten season with a nasty showdown with Iowa. The national title hopes aren't completely gone as long as the Buckeyes run the table in impressive fashion, but damage control needs to be done against the Aztecs. San Diego State has been a bit of a disappointment to start the season with losses to UCLA and Air Force by a combined score of 89 to 50. OSU would probably suffer a bit of a letdown, but Smith will be too effective while the linebacking corps will keep Aztec star RB Lynell Hamilton from being effective.


Prediction: Ohio St. 45 ... San Diego St. 16

No. 21 Oklahoma at UCLA

Does Oklahoma flat-out suck, or is this a transition period before the team finally wakes up out of its Orange Bowl hangover and becomes OU again? We'll find out this week against a UCLA team that might be a lot better than it's being given credit for. The Bruins ripped through San Diego State and Rice by a not-as-close-as-the-score-indicates 107 to 42, and could use this win to finally give the Karl Dorrell era a big boost into national prominence. Oklahoma might be struggling, but this would still be a fantastic victory. A loss, considering the Bruins are almost a TD favorite, might be devastating for team confidence.

Ohio at No. 4 Virginia Tech

Ohio is back after shocking the college football world on national TV with a thrilling overtime 16-10 win over Pitt. Virginia Tech is better than Pitt and gets another tune-up before diving back into the ACC slate dealing with Georgia Tech next week. The Bobcats won't win, but they'll give the Hokies a little bit of a run if the defense plays as well as it did last week. Interestingly enough, Marcus Vick hasn't done much running with only 19 yards on 17 attempts so far. But he's working on his passing. He can run at any timeVirginia Tech can call its shot. Ohio simply doesn't have the offense do make a dent in the Hokie D.

Northern Iowa at No. 22 Iowa

O.K. Iowa, you did your annual pre-October 7th loss and now it's time to go on your annual crush and kill run on the way to national respectability. After a brutally ugly 23-3 loss to instate rival Iowa State, the Hawkeyes will look to get well with a Ball State-like win to bring back the warm, happy feelings that surrounded the team this offseason. Unfortunately, Northern Iowa might not be a pushover coming in on an eight-game winning streak and starting the season 2-0 beating Drake and Minnesota-Duluth by a combined score of 101 to 31.


Prediction: Iowa 34 ... Northern Iowa 7

Illinois at No. 15 California

The Ron Zook era at Illinois has gotten off to an interesting start with the scintillating overtime win over Rutgers followed up by the 40-19 walk-in-the-park victory over San Jose State. Even so, the 2-0 record has garnered a collective yawn from everyone outside of Champaign. A win over Cal would change that in a big way. Despite injuries, quarterback issues, and various consistency problems, the Bears still won their first two games over Sacramento State and Washington by a combined score of 97 to 20. Illinois will provide more of a true test.

Connecticut at No. 16 Georgia Tech

As great basketball match ups go, this also figures to be a pretty darn good football game. Both the Jackets and Huskies have exceeded pre-season expectations, the latter yet to give up a point and the former snapping Auburn's 15-game winning streak in the opener. UConn has feasted on Buffalo and Liberty, picking up some much-needed confidence and reps for the starters along the way. Tech is deep on both sides of the ball, and capable of playing their way into the sleeper role in the competitive ACC. UConn has impressed, but this is a significant step up in competition for a young team that has yet to venture away from Storrs in 2005.

If you believe Fresno State is the real deal this season and good enough to challenge all the big boys, then this is the game it has to win. Oregon appears to be stronger than it has been in the last few years, but the jury is still out after a shaky opening night performance against Houston and a win over Montana. The big showdown with USC is next week, but Oregon can't overlook a veteran Bulldog team good enough to come away with the win. The Bulldogs have a good home game against Toledo next week, and then it should be smooth sailing until November. In other words, a win over Oregon probably means an 8-0 start before hosting Boise State.

Sam Houston St. at No. 19 Texas Tech

Texas Tech gets to exercise it's attack for yet another week with Sam Houston State the willing victim. The Red Raiders obliterated Florida International 56-3, and now it gets two straight weeks of DI-AA teams to fatten up on before going to Kansas. Sam Houston State didn't play poorly against Houston last week, but it lost 31-10. So how did Cody Hodges do in his first time out as the starter? 29 of 37 for 454 yards and four touchdowns. He also showed more mobility than past Red Raider quarterbacks tearing off 44 yards and a touchdown. Expect the mega-numbers to continue. Hs number one target was former quarterback Robert Johnson, who made a big splash right away with nine catches for 129 yards and a touchdown (along with a 15-yard celebration penalty). The Red Raiders will hang 80 if it tries for a full 60 minutes.

No. 8 Florida St. at No. 17 Boston College

Miami-FSU was big; this is bigger. The 'Canes and 'Noles can still play in the ACC title, but this is a clash between two division foes and it's the first big chance for Boston College to make a splash in its new league. The college football world is still skeptical about Florida State after its horrible offensive performance against Miami and a stunningly sluggish, at least for a half, 62-10 win over The Citadel. BC looked the part of an ACC heavyweight by drilling BYU 20-3 in a solid road opening performance before the obligatory walk in the park 44-7 win over Army. The winner is in the driver's seat for the Atlantic Division title, while the loser won't be able to afford another mistake. If BC truly wants to sit at the big boy table, it comes up with this great home win. Florida State can finally get a measure of true national respect by coming away with a win.

No. 12 Purdue at Arizona

These are two of 2005's most fascinating teams. Purdue has the schedule, the talent and the experience to be a deep dark-horse in the BCS race, but the college football world appears a bit skeptical wanting to see a few impressive wins first before falling in love with Joe Tiller's boys. Under head coach Mike Stoops, Arizona appears to be improving each week as it's still feeding off the shocking win over Arizona State to close out 2004. A close loss at Utah and a solid performance in a 31-12 win over Northern Arizona has given the Wildcats the confidence to beat a team like Purdue. A win would be a huge feather in the Pac 10's cap, as well as Arizona's.

Northwestern at No. 18 Arizona State

With all due respect to the Texas-Ohio State game, no one played more entertaining games last week than Northwestern and Arizona State. The Sun Devils stood toe-to-toe with national title contender LSU and almost pulled out the win in a 35-31 shootout. Northwestern's 38-37 win over Northern Illinois was even more of a nail-biter after Huskie coach Joe Novak chose to go for two rather than force overtime with an extra point. Can anyone stop the Arizona State attack? Can Northwestern prove it belongs among the top 25 teams with a win? Whatever happens, there will be lots of scoring and tons of big plays between the nation's number four (ASU) and seven (Northwestern) offenses.
