                    USA Today/Eric Smith

No. 1 Southern California vs. Arkansas, 10:15 p.m. ET

The Razorbacks were caught looking ahead to USC and fell to Vanderbilt at home last week. Maybe now they have the advantage of the Trojans looking ahead to next week's trip to Oregon. Southern California 42, Arkansas 14.

                    No. 2 Texas vs. Rice, 7 p.m.

No worries about a letdown for the Longhorns after the big win against Ohio State. They can sleepwalk and put up half a hundred against the Owls. Texas 51, Rice 10.

                    No. 4 Tennessee at No. 7 Florida, 8 p.m.

Rick Clausen gets the start for the Volunteers ahead of sophomore Erik Ainge. The experience of a fifth-year senior will help at The Swamp, but it is not enough to deny Urban Meyer his first signature win with the Gators. Florida 28, Tennessee 19.

No. 4 Virginia Tech vs. Ohio, 3:30 p.m.

Ohio's victory over Pittsburgh was the feel-good story of last weekend. No chance for a second chapter in Blacksburg. Virginia Tech 40, Ohio 3.

                    No. 6 Georgia vs. Louisiana-Monroe, 1 p.m.

The Bulldogs, who were almost the first upset victim of Steve Spurrier's tenure at South Carolina, get a much-needed opportunity to iron out their problems on offense. Georgia 42, Louisiana-Monroe 6.

No. 8 Florida State at No. 16 Boston College, 7:45 p.m.

Virginia Tech won the ACC in its first year in the league, and BC would be in great shape to make the conference championship game with a win. Chestnut Hill will be rocking and the Eagles' edge at quarterback should be the difference in a low-scoring contest. Boston College 16, Florida State 13.

No. 9 Ohio State vs. San Diego State, 3:30 p.m.

The Buckeyes have now chosen Troy Smith as their starting quarterback. If only Jim Tressel could have settled this before his team's inconsistent play on offense against Texas. Ohio State 38, San Diego State 14.

No. 10 Louisville vs. Oregon State, noon

If the Beavers' players are anything like most college students, the 9 a.m. start time for their West Coast bodies may have them rolling over and hitting the snooze button instead of heading to the pregame meal. Louisville 30, Oregon State 23.

                    No. 11 Purdue at Arizona, 10 p.m.

A win by Arizona and a loss by Oklahoma could have Mike Stoops' team ranked higher than his brother Bob's. Purdue 24, Arizona 20.

No. 12 Notre Dame vs. Michigan State, 3:30 p.m.

Irish fans and players have every right to be excited about their first two wins and the home opener of the Charlie Weis era. They better be focused on the Spartans, who have won in each of their last four visits to South Bend. Notre Dame 31, Michigan State 30.

No. 13 Miami (Fla.) at No. 23 Clemson, 3:30 p.m.

Two last-minute, come-from-behind wins may have emptied the Tigers' tank with Miami coming to town. Kyle Wright showed promise in his first start as Hurricanes quarterback even though his offensive line did him no favors. That will have to be cleaned up if Miami wants to escape Death Valley without his team on the outside of the ACC race after its first 0-2 start since 1978. Miami (Fla.) 24, Clemson 21.

No. 14 Michigan vs. Eastern Michigan, noon

The early questions raised by the Wolverines were confirmed by Notre Dame. Now there is concern Michigan might be headed for at least two more losses if Chad Henne continues to lay eggs. Michigan 40, Eastern Michigan 17.

                    No. 15 California vs. Illinois, 5 p.m.

Looks like the Golden Bears finally have solved their quarterback quandary after Joe Ayoob's big game at Washington. Ron Zook gets his first chance in the underdog role he thrived in at Florida. California 37, Illinois 20.

                    No. 17 Oklahoma at UCLA, 3:30 p.m.

It won't take long for the Sooners to realize the Bruins are not Tulsa or TCU. Their inability to throw the ball will only be magnified against one of the more underrated teams in the country. UCLA 28, Oklahoma 14.

No. 18 Georgia Tech vs. Connecticut, 6:45 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets are one of the early surprises this year behind the maturation of quarterback Reggie Ball. Tech fans will take some solace in a big win against the school that deprived them of the basketball national championship in 2004. Georgia Tech 30, Connecticut 12.

No. 19 Texas Tech vs. Sam Houston State, 7 p.m.

Another chance for the Red Raiders to pile up points against a weaker opponent and gain momentum toward the Big 12 schedule in October. Texas Tech 55, Sam Houston State 10.

No. 20 Virginia at Syracuse, noon

Greg Robinson has brought defense to the Orange in his first two year. The offense still has a ways to go, unfortunately. Virginia 17, Syracuse 14.

No. 21 Iowa vs. Northern Iowa, 3:30 p.m.

Even before Drew Tate went down, the Hawkeyes looked overmatched against Iowa State. Just don't count out Iowa too soon. An early blowout loss last year at Arizona State didn't stop Kirk Ferentz's team from winning a share of the Big Ten title. Iowa 35, Northern Iowa 9.

No. 22 Arizona State vs. Northwestern, 10 p.m.

No coach or team likes taking a loss, but the Sun Devils should be buoyed by an impressive effort against LSU. Arizona State 38, Northwestern 19.

No. 24 Alabama at South Carolina, 3:30 p.m.

Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks are rewarded for their effort against Georgia by having to face a Crimson Tide team ready to return to the SEC elite. Alabama 23, South Carolina 20.

No. 25 Fresno State at Oregon, 7 p.m.

One of two opportunities for the Bulldogs to pull an upset in the Pac-10. If Fresno gets by unscathed, it will likely be unbeaten when it travels to face USC in November. Oregon 24, Fresno State 19.

                    Last week's record: 14-3 (5-10)

                    This season's record: 30-7 (16-18)

                      sporting news

Notre Dame 36, Michigan State 17. An 0-6 start, huh? How about 5-0 and a "Game of the Century" in South Bend against USC?

UCLA 27, Oklahoma 17. So OU's quarterbacks have played poorly? Wait until they get away from Norman.

Boston College 20, Florida State 9. BC game plan: max protection, see if anyone can cover WR Will Blackmon.

Southern Cal 30, Arkansas 13. A good tune-up before the Trojans' first big road test of the season (Oregon) a week later.

Purdue 26, Arizona 21. 'Boilers get their first scare of the season; QB Brandon Kirsch gains road moxie.

Tennessee 24, Florida 16. Exhibit A: Why the spread option offense won't work in the physical SEC.

Definition 1: Fucking and cumming in a person's ocular cavity. Usually done on people with eyepatches or glass eyes like blackbeard the pirate but a real eyeball can be popped out in a pinch.

Usage Example: I was out with that bitch with the glass eye and I totally blackbearded her last night.
