            CBSsportsline Harmon forecast

Minnesota 28 *Cincinnati 27 -- The Vikings possess one of the league's most potent offenses. However, the Bengals continue to improve on both sides of the ball under coach Marvin Lewis.

*Indianapolis 25 Jacksonville 18 -- There is no stopping the Colts' hard-charging offense, which scored a league-best 522 points last season. With all the pieces still in place, the Colts should gallop to victory.

*Philadelphia 27 San Francisco 12 -- Everything points in the Eagles' favor in this game. Philadelphia has a better offense and defense, and it possesses home-field advantage.

Buffalo 24 *Tampa Bay 23 -- It's always difficult to come into Raymond James Stadium and focus amid the sea of Pewter and Black. Buffalo's ability to sustain a ground attack will come into play in this game.

Pittsburgh 18 *Houston 17 -- The Steelers have one of the league's top defenses, which means the team will have to be at the top of its game in order to edge the improved Texans at home.

Baltimore 23 *Tennessee 17 -- The Ravens' defense is one of the most feared in the NFL, and will surely make things difficult for a Titans team that experienced a lot of turnovers in the offseason.

Detroit 21 *Chicago 20 -- This black-and-blue divisional matchup should be fun to watch. Detroit's improved offense and Chicago's quarterback situation could be the key factors in this game.

New England 25 *Carolina 19 -- New England is solid on both offense and defense, and has most of its components intact. Home-field advantage may not be enough for Carolina, which struggled on defense last season.

*Arizona 28 St. Louis 27 -- A lot of folks seem to believe that Dennis Green has Arizona headed in the right direction. A win over a divisional rival like St. Louis will reinforce that notion.

Atlanta 21 *Seattle 20 -- It's always difficult to travel from the East to the West, or vice-versa, but Michael Vick and the Falcons will be primed and ready to go when the whistle blows.

*NY Jets 21 Miami 14 -- The Jets have had much success in recent seasons against hated rival Miami. Home-field advantage will play of big part in this contest.

San Diego 24 *Denver 23 -- Opposing teams will be gunning for San Diego this season, which will look to prove against Denver that the 2004 season was not a fluke. LaDainian Tomlinson could be the difference.

*Green Bay 24 Cleveland 17 -- The Packers haven't been as dominant at Lambeau Field in recent seasons as they were in the 1990s, but hosting Cleveland in the team's home-opener bodes in Green Bay's favor.

Kansas City 29 *Oakland 28 -- The Chiefs have an explosive offense and they'll need to operate at full strength in Oakland against receiver Randy Moss's Raiders in this offensive-sided game.

            Week 2 - Monday, Sep. 19, 2005
NY Giants 20 *New Orleans 19 -- The whole complexion of this game changes following the horrific aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. When these two teams meet on the field, it'll be all business.

Washington 19 *Dallas 16 -- The Redskins are benefitting from a "soft" opening to the season, including this second-week matchup against Divisional rival Dallas.

              Week 2 Matchups

              1 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup Baltimore (1-0) at Tennessee (0-1)
I don't trust either offense, but the one player I believe in here is Jamal Lewis. I don't care how they jam the box at Adelphia. The Titans will watch Lewis run for 116 yards.
              Baltimore 16, Tennessee 14

              1 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup Detroit (1-0) at Chicago (0-1)
Welcome to the NFL's low-scoring weekend. Amazing. Detroit's going to be 2-0, and we're not going to know if Joey Harrington is the answer or not.
              Detroit 13, Chicago 10

              1 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup San Francisco (1-0) at Philadelphia (0-1)
Ouch. Double ouch. The Eagles, even with QB Donovan McNabb nursing a sore chest, are an angry bunch. And Terrell Owens burns his old pals with a 158-yard day.
              Philadelphia 38, San Francisco 10

              1 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup Buffalo (1-0) at Tampa Bay (1-0)
I love this game. Absolutely love it. Wish I was able to see it. The Bucs have served notice that they might be pretty good this year, and I already know Buffalo's going to be good. Willis McGahee is going to give some Buc a headache.
              Buffalo 17, Tampa Bay 15

              1 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup Minnesota (0-1) at Cincinnati (1-0)
Jump off the Vikings bandwagon? You've got to be kidding me. I'm on for the duration. Or until they lose to the Bengals on the banks of the mighty Ohio. Not this week.
              Minnesota 28, Cincinnati 20

              1 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup Pittsburgh (1-0) at Houston (0-1)
On Sunday night when you're watching the highlights, one of the first things you'll see is a clip of Willie Parker running for more than 150 for the second straight game.
              Pittsburgh 29, Houston 14

              1 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup Jacksonville (1-0) at Indianapolis (1-0)
The last four games between the two teams: Colts, 23-13, Jags, 28-23, Colts 24-17, Jags 27-24. I just took the average, more or less. I really like the Jags' defense, and if they are going to make my preseason pick -- of the Jags winning AFC South -- come true they've got to start here.
              Jacksonville 23, Indianapolis 20

              1 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup New England (1-0) at Carolina (0-1)
Talk about your physical tussles. Both teams will be begging for the Week 3 bye after this one. Brady out-duels Delhomme by throwing two TD passes to one.
              New England 19, Carolina 10

              4:05 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup St. Louis (0-1) at Arizona (0-1)
Dennis Green, late in this debacle, cannot believe what has happened to a defense he swore was going to be all right. The Rams get well with a 369-yard passing day from Marc Bulger.
              St. Louis 45, Arizona 15

              4:05 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup Atlanta (1-0) at Seattle (0-1)
Anyone else notice that in the Falcons' last three regular-season games, they've made their longest-possible NFL road trip? That's right. They closed at Seattle last winter. Time to rise, Matt Hasselbeck.
              Atlanta 23, Seattle 21

              4:15 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup Miami (1-0) at New York (0-1)
Second upset on the card. I like Nick Saban's chances to keep the ball away from the New York offense, and the Jets to struggle on their 10 possessions. After this one, it won't be so foolish to start saying "Miami" and "playoffs" in the same sentence.
Miami 16, New York Jets 14

              4:15 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup San Diego (0-1) at Denver (0-1)
A heartbreaker for Shanahan. This time, my guess is Marty Schottenheimer will let LaDainian Tomlinson touch the ball more than twice in the last 10 minutes of a tight one.
              San Diego 24, Denver 23

              4:15 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup Cleveland (0-1) at Green Bay (0-1)
Sorry, Brownaholics. Romeo Crennel cannot build it in a year. It might take him three. And I know that's not what you want to hear.
              Green Bay 30, Cleveland 3

              8:30 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup Kansas City (1-0) at Oakland (0-1)
Now this is what we pay to see: a good, old-fashioned AFL-esque shootout in the Black Hole. Randy Moss takes advantage of Patrick Surtain's fuzzy head, but Tony Gonzales explodes for a career day.
              Kansas City 32, Oakland 28

              7:30 p.m. ET
Matchup New York (1-0) at New Orleans (1-0)
After the most thunderous pre-game ovation for a foe in the history of the Meadowlands, Deuce McAllister takes New Jersey by storm. More importantly, millions are raised for hurricane relief.
New Orleans 23, New York Giants 16

              9 p.m. ET
Preview | Matchup Washington (1-0) at Dallas (1-0)
This is the ugly redheaded stepchild of a Monday-nighter. While the usual TV audience is still hooked to the fascinating story known as the New Orleans Saints, Drew Bledsoe throws his fourth and fifth touchdown passes of the young season.
              Dallas 14, Washington 12

New England at Carolina: The Pats have won so often lately they have forgotten what it feels like to be a loser. Well, it's time to feel like Dustin Diamond circa today. Carolina 21, Patriots 10.

Detroit at Chicago: The Bears offense is about as sexy as a topless Donald Trump running along the Jersey Shore. Lions 17, Bears 3.

Minnesota at Cincinnati: This just in — Cincinnati is hard to spell correctly. Quick, do it without looking. We dare you. You can't teach that kind of toughness, sorry Minnesota. Bengals 27, Vikings 17.

Pittsburgh at Houston: Anybody else believe Andy Van Slyke could run for more than 150 yards if he was on the Steelers? Yeah, we do too. Steelers 34, Texans 7.

Jacksonville at Indianapolis: Back at home, the Colts offense is faster than Ben Johnson in the Olympics. How's that for topical? Colts 38, Jaguars 24.

San Francisco at Philadelphia: The 49ers are for real this year! Yeah, and Pam Anderson was unjustly snubbed from this year's Emmy's. Eagles 24, 49ers 6.

Buffalo at Tampa Bay: Picking your favorite team is like seeing a naked woman in Vegas. Easy. Bills 21, Bucs 10.

Baltimore at Tennessee: Remember that old commercial that said, "This offer is good in 49 states. Sorry Tennessee!" Yeah, well, sorry Tennessee. Ravens 17, Titans 0.

St. Louis at Arizona: Can't you just see Mike Martz drawing up plays on a chalkboard some day in an old folks home yelling "Greatest Show in Diapers!" Cardinals 20, Rams 10.

Atlanta at Seattle: Reebok pumps : Overrated : Mike Holmgren : Reebok pumps. Falcons 24, Seahawks 20.

San Diego at Denver: The Broncos haven't looked this bad defensively since the second quarter of Super Bowl XXII. Chargers 31, Broncos 13.

Cleveland at Green Bay: Cheering against Brett Favre is like cheering against a baby attempting to take its first step, you just can't do it. Packers 24, Browns 17.

Miami at New York Jets: If you think the Dolphins are going to open the season with two consecutive wins, then you've been spending too much time with Ricky Williams. Jets 14, Dolphins 10.

Kansas City at Oakland: No one wants to be around — or have their car parked near — a Raiders fan if the Silver and Black starts the season 0-2. This one goes out to all the car stereos and driver-side windows out there. Raiders 27, Chiefs 24.

New York Giants at New Orleans: The Saints keep lifting the spirits back home while the Giants get whooped in theirs. Saints 21, Giants 3.

Washington at Dallas: Someone once said Drew Bledsoe was as strong as an Oak, and just as mobile as one, too. While that is true, Old Man Bledsoe has enough to win another one for Old Man Tuna. Dallas 21, Redskins 17.

                      Miami herald/Greg Cote NFL picks

                      Greg Cote's Week 2 Picks

                      Dolphins this week
                      DOLPHINS (1-0) AT JETS (0-1)

                      • When: 4:15 p.m. Sunday • TV: Chs. 4, 12

                      • Line: NYJ by 6 • Cote: NYJ 24-17

Welcome to the Meadowlands, where Jets fans -- tired of having their intelligence questioned -- periodically chant-spell ''J-E-T-S!'' just to prove they can. Call this one a reality-check game for (say it while you can) undefeated Miami. Planes are on a 6-1 series run at home and primed for nice bounce-back effort after awfuling up Arrowhead Stadium last week. Give Dolphs a legit upset shot, though, especially if Gus Frerotte continues to party like it's 1996. Last week's spanking of Denver was no mirage, and NYJ is oversold as more than just another 9-7 wannabe. Hand Nick Saban the Coach of the Year trophy right now if Aquas author another shocker. But don't bet on it.

                      Game of the week
                      SAINTS (1-0) VS. GIANTS (1-0)

                      • When: 7:30 p.m. Monday • TV: Chs. 10, 25

                      • Line: NYG by 3 • Cote: N.O. 24-23

We know by now that the Saints have become America's (Adopted) Team, due to Hurricane Katrina's devastation of New Orleans. That's why what is officially a Saints home game is being played in Jersey, with more than 600 displaced N'Awlins fans being flown in. Emotion and a bigger-than-just-a-game feel are guaranteed as this kicks off a Monday night doubleheader culminating the NFL's fundraising Hurricane Relief Weekend. Everybody wanted to credit emotion for last week's Saints upset of Carolina, and that was part of it. But maybe it's time to admit the Saints have simply gotten pretty good. They have now won five straight since last season. Make it six.

                      Upset of the week
                      REDSKINS (1-0) AT COWBOYS (1-0)
                      • When: 9 p.m. Monday • TV: Chs. 10, 25

                      • Line: DAL. by 6 • Cote: WAS., 19-17

''AAAWWWK!'' croons the Upset Bird. ''I like Washington's defense. But not as much as I like the mental picture of Bill Parcells in Tom Landry's hat. Aawwk!'' Geez. Parcells vs. Joe Gibbs? Drew Bledsoe vs. Mark Brunell? What decade is this? You can see why Dallas is favored in this Monday late game: Won four straight in series, 24-9 in openers at Texas Stadium and Tuna 12-6 vs. Brother Gibb. Still, I see Redskin blitzing inundating Bledsoe, who, if he were any less mobile, would be in a park, on a pedestal, with pigeons on his head. ''Is that why they say Bledsoe looks statuesque in the pocket?'' muses U-Bird. ``Statueaaawwwk!''

                      Dog of the week
                      LIONS (1-0) AT BEARS (0-1)

                      • When: 1 p.m. Sunday • TV: None

                      • Line: DET. by 1 ½ • Cote: DET. 23-10

Motown has beaten Chitown three straight in series, but that isn't the main reason we favor the Lions more convincingly than the narrow betting line does. Detroit's defense, which saddled a TD shutout on Brett Favre last week, simply will overwhelm a weak Bears offense led shakily by not-ready rookie QB Kyle Orton. Against strong competition, this has been voted the Week 2 game least likely to produce a playoff team. Times are so hard for the unscary Lions and toothless Bears, in fact, that Dorothy has altered the lyrics of that song from the Wizard of Oz. Now she sings, ``Aardvarks and Tigers and Deer, oh my!''

                      STEELERS (1-0) AT TEXANS (0-1)

                      • When: 1 p.m. Sunday • TV: None.

                      • Line: PIT. by 6 • Cote: PIT., 20-17

Sandwich game for Pitters -- snuck between big season-opening home win and playing host to champ Pats next week in AFC heavyweight bout -- so men of Big Ben may be in natural letdown mode while Houston gets emotional goose from home debut.

                      JAGUARS (1-0) AT COLTS (1-0)

                      • When: 1 p.m. Sunday • TV: None

                      • Line: IND. by 9 • Cote: IND. 27-20

You want parity? One week into the season, and this is one of only four of 16 games with both teams at 1-0. Like Nags in their home bow, but close. Peyton Manning is 17-4 on TDs/picks in seven games vs. Jax, but Jags have split series past two seasons.

                      RAVENS (0-1) AT TITANS (0-1)

                      • When: 1 p.m. Sunday • TV: None

                      • Line: BAL. by 3 ½ • Cote: BAL. 17-7

Anthony Wright goes at QB for Crabcakers in place of injured Kyle Boller, but Wright's 5-1 run as itinerant starter along with Boller's unprovenness means Balts might benefit, if anything. See an enormous rebound game defensively for Ray Lewis and crew.

                      CHARGERS (0-1) AT BRONCOS (0-1)

                      • When: 4:15 p.m. Sunday • TV: None

                      • Line: DEN. by 3 • Cote: S.D. 27-21

Upset! Denver owns the series lately (12-4 run) and the home-opener emotion here, but still like Bolts. Drew Brees will see big numbers against a lousy Stallions defense with its best player, CB Champ Bailey, hobbled at best.

                      CHIEFS (1-0) AT RAIDERS (0-1)

                      • When: 8:30 p.m. Sunday • TV: ESPN

                      • Line: K.C. by 1 ½ • Cote: K.C. 31-20

Oakland is a very trendy mini-upset pick, having won seven consecutive home openers. But K.C. has won four straight in series. The pick assumes K.C. has enough players to field a team, considering LB Larry Johnson is the fourth Chief arrested since the offseason.

                      49ERS (1-0) AT EAGLES (0-1)

                      • When: 1 p.m. Sunday • TV: Chs. 7, 29

                      • Line: Off board • Cote: PHI. 30-13

We can only imagine what Terrell Owens has planned for a TD celebration. In the home opener? Against his old team? I'm guessing it will make Cirque du Soleil look understated. Phils were giving 13 ½ before game went off board due to Donovan McNabb's injury.

                      RAMS (0-1) AT CARDINALS (0-1)

                      • When: 4:05 p.m. Sunday • TV: None

                      • Line: ARI. by 1 • Cote: ARI. 24-20

A nervous pick but I'll take a shot on Kurt Warner coming up big against his former team in Birds' home opener. Plus Rams are in disarray, evidenced by a front-office exec sending a threatening voice mail to a local columnist. Brilliant!

                      FALCONS (1-0) AT SEAHAWKS (0-1)

                      • When: 4:05 p.m. Sunday • TV: None

                      • Line: SEA. by 1 • Cote: SEA. 23-20

Venue pick all the way. Is Atlanta a better team? Oh yes. But this is a short week and a long trip for Falcs, who won't match the intensity they brought in handling Philly Monday night. Home opener for Coffeetown, and 'Hawks have won three straight in series.

                      PATRIOTS (1-0) AT PANTHERS (0-1)

                      • When: 1 p.m. Sunday • TV: None

                      • Line: N.E. by 3 • Cote: N.E. 24-20

Super Bowl XXXVIII from the season before last finds New-E ripe for an upset -- so you might think. Could be a look-ahead week for Patriots, with Pittsburgh on deck. But isn't Carolina weaker on D without injured Kris Jenkins? Plus: Bill Belichick with three extra days to prepare. Scary.

                      VIKINGS (0-1) AT BENGALS (1-0)

                      • When: 1 p.m. Sunday • TV: None

                      • Line: CIN. by 3 • Cote: CIN. 24-17

Interesting matchup, partly because teams last met in '98, and 'Gals have turned decent since then. Daunte Culpepper is finding out early how much he misses Randy Moss. Vikes still make a tempting dog, but time to accept that Cincy has gone legit under Marvin Lewis.

                      BILLS (1-0) AT BUCCANEERS (1-0)

                      • When: 1 p.m. Sunday • TV: Chs. 4, 12

                      • Line: T.B. by 2 ½ • Cote: BUF. 21-20

See the Williams' great pass defense making it a long day for Brian Griese. And Buffs (on a 7-1 roll since last year) have enough offensive support to insulate J.P. Losman and keep pressure off. T-Bay may come in overconfident after upsetting Minny last week.

                      BROWNS (0-1) AT PACKERS (0-1)

                      • When: 4:15 p.m. Sunday • TV: None

                      • Line: G.B. by 6 ½ • Cote: G.B. 31-14

Cheesehead Nation faces a tough year, albeit in a winnable division. Things won't get easier for Brett Favre without injured WR Javon Walker. But Favre -- 65 yards from joining Dan Marino and John Elway in the 50K Club -- and Lambeau Field have some magic left.

                      HOW THE DARTS LANDED

Bad stuff out of the way first: Last week's Upset of the Week pick, Titans winning at Pittsburgh, has been voted the worst call since my great-grandpap, Ebenezer Cote -- when given the chance in 1894 to partner with Henry Ford -- chortled and said, ``That's folly, Hank! The automobile will never take off!''

(Nobody ''chortles'' anymore. Have you noticed?)

Somehow, we recovered from our cruise on the Titanic to sidestep other opening-week mines and score a winning mark against the spread, led by outright upset bull's-eyes on Dolphins over Denver and Falcons over Philly, plus a direct hit on the emotion-driven Saints covering at Carolina.
