              B.J. Schecter: USC 42, Virginia Tech 24

              foxsports

This is also the first time we get to see USC do its thing after being anointed by everyone as the biggest, baddest program in college football. How will the Trojans handle the pressure of being number one? How will Virginia Tech represent itself as one of the newest ACC teams? Last year at this time most were hailing Auburn as one of the teams to beat for the national title before USC set the tone for its championship campaign with a dominant win. The unheralded Hokies would love nothing more than to flip the script on USC and reestablish the program as one of the college football elite.

Fearless Prediction: USC 34 ... Virginia Tech 20

                Anyone have Top Daily Play?

Hey guys new to the forum. Hope to post some solid plays for everyone to follow. Was wondering if anyone might have top daily play's pick. If I remember right Jaguilar you used to post them in ********.com was wondering if you still have there plays. Thanks and the best of luck to all in the upcoming football season!

My 1st post is Carolina -2.5 or 3 tonight against New Engalnd. I feel emotions will play a big factor in this one!

Also I am leaning towards USC to cover 15.5 just because there defensive is so good. I don't see Tech scoring much maybe less than 10 and if so then I feel USC ******. And this is a unbiased opinion especially since I played baseball at Virginia Tech. GO HOKIES!

                  Advantage Sports Saturday Plays

Again, a disappointing 1-2 last night, so we stand at 14-9 and +9.9 Units for preseason. Tonight is likely the last decent opportunity for NFL preseason wagering as most teams use week 3 as a final tuneup for the starters and week 4 is to fill the last few roster spots for special teams and backups. Let's look at tonight's best opportunities in NFL:

                  5* KC/Cleveland OVER 42 (first&only preseason 5*)
4* New England +3.5 (buying the hook, -120)
                  4* Cincy/Atlanta OVER 40
                  3* Miami/TB UNDER 33

                  NCAA

                  3* Virginia Tech +16
                  3* VT/USC UNDER 48.5

Let's start in KC where the Chiefs come off a short week following Monday's 24-7 win over the Rams. Let's face it, niether team is going into 2004 with a proven defense and only the Rams offensive ineptitude on Monday kept this game from going over the total. Cleveland has holes in the secondary and injuries have already thinned the defense of the Browns, an area they have no depth to begin with. KC has brought back Guenther Cunningham who was the D Coordinator when the Chiefs had success in the 90's but failed as a HC when offered the job. Both safeties are out for KC tonight and Cleveland should be able to put some points up in the game. Even with limited action for the starters, both teams have decent backups at QB with Holcomb replacing Garcia and Collins following Green. This should go into the high 40's and possibly over fifty. My first and only 5 Unit play in preseason.
There is a whole lot of hype coming out of Carolina tonight with the Panthers hosting the New England Patriots, looking for revenge from the Super Bowl loss they suffered earlier this year. This is reality: YOU WILL NEVER GET REVENGE for losing in the Championship Game, end of story. Carolina could win by 30 tonight and it won't change who is wearing the rings on their fingers, and the Panthers know this. Any talk of revenge is media crap. This game is the Panthers fans attempt to feel better about the end result of the Super Bowl. That being said, I am putting much more faith in Bill Belicheck's desire to see some major improvement from last week's ugliness in Cincinnati. You are going to see a team with Super Bowl talent and aspirations play to the ability that they expect of themselves going into a final tuneup before the regular season. I will gladly take points after last week knowing that even if Carolina comes out breathing fire, the Patriots are more than capable of holding thier own and reminding everyone in the league who are the World Champions. Carolina will be hard pressed to duplicate last year's success in my book where they won several games in late 4th quarter comebacks and stayed relatively injury free playing a soft schedule. My opinion, but this game should be Pick'em at worst. I'll buy the hook and take the better team getting points.
Let's look at Atlanta's exhibition against the Bengals. While Carson Palmer has played well in preseason and the Bengals offense looks pretty good, Atlanta has been sluggish on both sides of the ball. Coach Mora has said that he needs to see some urgency going into the regular season and Vick should start producing after missing all last year to injury. Neither team would scare me defensively and with the starters playing deep into the 3rd qurter on both sides, expect a game over 48 total points in the Dome. Defensive injuries on both sides of the ball make this a solid play.
Then you have Tampa Bay and Miami... quite the opposite of the offenses we have discussed in this post. I really don't know how to describe the Dolphins problems offensively. Miami was a team in trouble long before Ricky bolted to Asia and I will always believe that aside from his positive drug tests, he was not willing to be the sacrificial lamb for that offense. The line play is awful and neither Feidler or Feeley are mobile enough to avoid the blitz. Ricky's YPC were the lowest ever for a back that gained over 1,000 yards last year. Even trading Ogunleye was a disaster as all they could get was a 2nd or 3rd option WR in Marty Booker. What I see is a coach that knows he is on the hot seat and is panicking early. The display last week at home vs. Washington was a disgrace, gaining 98 yards TOTAL offensively... THAT's offensive! Travis Minor is averaging 1.1 yards per carry as the new starter. Where are points going to come from tonight? You can't look to the Bucs to become a offensive juggernaut as it is not the style they play and they are so decimated at WR and O-Line it will be a wonder that Brad Johnson will have anywhere to throw. Simms follows but Griese finishes and he is on his way out of the league. I expect Tampa to control this game defensively as they will have the most regulars playing tonight on D that they have so far this preseason. Gruden loves to win these in-state rivalry games and after last week should look much better on both sides of the ball. While I won't project a side play, I think this may end 15-9... and won't threaten the posted total of 33.

I loved the total that came out when VT/USC was released at 59 and made a wager then but as the week progressed, the bottom fell out and both numbers are drastically changed. USC may have the most talent in the land if you read the recruiting experts prognosis, but they also have had to replace the entire offensive line due to graduation and suspension. Talent will gel over the course of the season and Carroll is a great coach and motivator, but Beamer in VT has great ability as well and may have the best special teams in the nation year in and year out. He will show much improvement off the dismal end to last season and has a good nucleus of talent back on both sides of the ball, even with the loss of Vick to suspension. In a game played for field position and with three months to game plan for this opener, I think VT gives the reloading/rebuilding Trojans all they can handle and a game that comes down to the 4th quarter and turnovers. This game would have been higher rated but the point spread drop in both side and total has caused me to back off a bit. Let's call for a Trojan win, but far from convincing... 23-12, USC.
Good Luck in whatever you play tonight... back on Monday night.

                    Saturday, August 28th - 7:45 p.m. (et)
                    The Sports Network

By Pat Taggart, College Football Writer

GAME NOTES: The college football season will begin in style on Saturday night at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland as Virginia Tech takes on Co-National Champion and top-ranked USC in the BCA Classic. The Hokies are certainly happy to see a clean slate, as their last season in the Big East was one to forget. Frank Beamer's squad got off to a fast start, as the team won six straight games and looked like a national title contender in 2003. With that in mind, the fact that Tech finished with an 8-5 record, which included a 52-49 shootout loss to California in the Insight Bowl, was surprising to say the least. This season will be the first for the Hokies as members of the ACC, and nothing would send a better message to new league rivals than a victory over the nation's top team in the opener. Accomplishing that feat, however, seems a monumental task. Last year, head coach Pete Carroll guided the Trojans to a 12-1 finish and a Pac-10 title. USC won its last nine games of the campaign, including an impressive 28-14 win against a very good Michigan squad in the Rose Bowl, and the only thing holding Carroll's team back from a perfect season and the undisputed 2003 National Championship was a triple-overtime setback to California. After sharing the crown with LSU, the Trojans are one of the clear favorites to win the 2004 title with a wealth of talent returning on both sides of the ball. Saturday's game marks the first-ever meeting between Virginia Tech and USC on the gridiron.

Virginia Tech averaged 35.4 points per game last year on just over 400 yards of total offense per outing, and a major reason for that was the production of Kevin Jones, one of the nation's top tailbacks. Jones has moved on to the NFL and will certainly be missed, while junior Cedric Humes takes over the rushing duties. Humes, who averaged 5.8 ypc a year ago and scored five touchdowns on just 65 carries, is excited to prove what he can do. The quarterback controversy that was supposed to take shape this season between Bryan Randall and Marcus Vick has become a moot point, now that Vick has been suspended for the season following off-the-field problems. So, although Randall was handed the job without a fight, there is a good chance he would be starting this BCA Classic even if Vick were available. Randall completed over 60 percent of his passes last season for 1,996 yards and 15 TDs. The senior signal caller also rushed for 404 yards and another five scores. Junior Justin Hamilton (23 catches, for 282 yards and one TD) is expected to be the most reliable receiver on the squad, and it is the hope of the coaches that some young players will emerge in this opener. The offensive line returns three of five starters and will certainly be tested on Saturday.

The Tech defense has earned the reputation of being one of the nation's top units over the past few years, but the squad surrendered 23.0 ppg and 367.5 yards per game a year ago, falling far short of expectations. The pass defense was the biggest culprit, allowing a generous 231.5 yards per game. The unit does return six starters from last year and that should give the team a bit of consistency. The secondary will suffer the most with the loss of All-American DeAngelo Hall and All-Big East Michael Crawford. Still, safety Jimmy Williams returns to lead the way in the defensive backfield against the vaunted USC passing attack. After posting 114 tackles a year ago, Williams is expected to be outstanding once again. The linebacking corps returns two thirds of its starters in the form of Mikal Baagee (109 tackles in 2003) and Brandon Manning (104 tackles), but pressure on opposing QBs will be the top concern for Beamer against the Trojans.

Two years ago Carson Palmer threw for 3,942 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior at USC and won the Heisman Trophy before being taken first overall in the ensuing NFL Draft. Matt Leinart had plenty to prove as Palmer's replacement last year, and he far exceeded everyone's expectations by throwing for 3,556 yards and 38 scores, en route to a share of the National Championship. Leinart could have bolted for the NFL but decided to come back for what is expected to be a sensational junior campaign. His top target from a year ago, standout receiver Mike Williams, attempted to make the jump to the NFL this past offseason but after a court decision blocked his path, he was left without a team. Williams petitioned the NCAA to have his eligibility reinstated, but it was denied just an hour before the team was scheduled to leave for Maryland. He is now without an NFL contract or a collegiate team to play for. Talented sophomores Steve Smith and Chris McFoy and senior Jason Mitchell will be counted on Saturday and all season to pose threats on the outside. The running back position is littered with talent this year, with Hershel Dennis, Reggie Bush and LenDale White all deserving playing time. This trio combined to rush for 1,936 yards and 20 touchdowns last year, and it will be interesting to see how they are used in this contest. The offensive line returns just one starter but could still be one of the best units in the nation.

The USC defense was dominant against the run in 2003, holding opponents to just 60.2 ypg which was tops in the nation. Although the squad did surrender 276.2 ypg through the air (110th in the country), many of those yards came when teams were far behind trying to catch up. The defense is once again built around an imposing front line and a group of superb linebackers. Shaun Cody was one of the nation's top interior lineman a year ago and is making the transition to the outside this season. Mike Patterson will take over as the team's inside presence up front, while linebackers Lofa Tatupu and Matt Grootegoed are two of the best in the conference and are equally effective against both the run and the pass. The Trojans should be better equipped in the secondary this season with experience and health on their side. Strong safety Darnell Bing is the star of the unit and in only his sophomore season he is already being touted as one of the top safeties in the nation. He has outstanding coverage ability and is one of the hardest hitters in the lineup.

Tech has lost all six of its previous meetings with the nation's top-ranked team, and that record will more than likely be 0-7 after this matchup. Beamer will have his Hokies ready to place, but the Trojans are simply the better team in all aspects of the game.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: USC 38, Virginia Tech 13

                              USC/Virgina Tech OVER 48.5

College football starts out with an intiguing matchup on Saturday as USC travels to the East Coast to face Virginia Tech in the Black Coaches Classic. As seen in my preview, the Hokies have lost a ton in recent years to graduation and will be without the services of three of their top offensive playmakers in Vick, Imoh, and Hill. At the time of this write up, it does not appear likely that SC WR Mike Williams will play in the contest either. Eighteen is a lot of points to lay this early in the season but the total, currently at 48.5, looks a little low in this one. Regardless of how young SC's WR's are, the man who will delivering the football is an absolute stud. VT only retained one DB from one year ago, not to mention only three of their front seven. USC is 16-5 OVER (+10.5 Units) when they score 28 or more points over the last 3 seasons and 5-1 OVER (+3.9 Units) when they force and commit the same number of turnovers over the last 3 seasons. The Hokies are 8-1 OVER (+6.9 Units) when they allow 28 or more points over the last 3 seasons. USC is 17-6 OVER (+10.4 Units) as a favorite over the last 3 seasons. Expect SC to have its way by air and land early against a green Hokie club, but Tech will hang around and could make it interesting come the fourth quarter. Tech may very well turn it over early and often in this one, leading to a bunch of points for the Trojans. Just too early to lay those points. Over the total for one unit.

                              * * * * *

Philadelphia (-145) vs. Milwaukee (Wolf vs. Sheets)

What's happened to Ben Sheets? He hasn't won a game since the all-star break and he's got a 6.43 ERA over his last three starts. I guess he's trying to match the results of his team overall. The Brewers have lost nine straight and 13 of their last 15. I don't see them breaking out of their slump tonight against the Phils. Milwaukee is 1-8 (-6.6 Units) against the money line vs. NL teams scoring 4.8 or more runs/game in the second half of the season this season. Philadelphia is 17-5 (+10.6 Units) against the money line vs. poor power teams - averaging 0.9 or less HR's/game this season. Finally, road teams at +125 to -125 with an on base percentage of .300 or worse over their last 15 games, with a struggling bullpen whose ERA is over 6.00 the last 15 games are just 35-74 over the last 5 seasons. One unit on Philadelphia.
