Zack Greinke of the Royals has eight starts thus far in his rookie season. Those eight starts have all gone Under the total, a trend that has been a consistent moneymaker for us over the past six weeks. Kansas City certainly hasn’t been scoring for their young ace, producing just 18 runs in his 8 starts, barely over two per game. That trend isn’t likely to change today against Johan Santana, arguably the most effective pitcher in the majors over the past month. Santana has been downright nasty, with five consecutive quality starts allowing two runs or less each time, with an impressive 51:4 K:BB ratio. That’s an average of more than ten strikeouts per start! Considering that KC was shut out again yesterday, and they’ve scored just 30 runs in their last dozen games – an offense that simply isn’t producing -- it’s easy to picture Santana mowing them down today. But Grienke has proven that he is more than capable of trading outs with other quality starters – the Twins nine run outburst last night was the exception, not the rule – they hadn’t scored that many runs in a single game in more than a month! Look for Grienke’s Under trend to continue at least one more game, in a pitching duel against one of the most underrated starters in all of baseball.
