RED-HOT TICATS CONTINUE ROLLING WITH HOME VICTORY OVER ALS

HAMILTON — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats continued their solid start to the season on Friday night with a 41-10 home victory over the Montreal Alouettes. The Ticats improved their record to 3-0 for their best start to a season since 2004.

Receiver Brandon Banks came through with another highlight game for Hamilton, scoring his third touchdown of the season on a 30-yard rush and racking up 152 receiving yards on 7 catches.

Running back Sean Thomas-Erlington added 149 total yards to help the Ticats secure the win, including a 75-yard catch-and-run touchdown.

Jeremiah Masoli improved his personal record against the Als to 5-0 with his third career 400-yard passing game. The quarterback completed 25 of 31 passes for 417 yards and a touchdown while also adding two rushing scores.

Receiver Bralon Addison stepped up again for Hamilton with Luke Tasker out, hauling in eight catches for 121 yards.

Hamilton’s stout defence racked up six sacks and an interception while constantly shutting down the Als’ offensive attack. Defensive end Ja’Gared Davis led the way with three sacks on the night.

Vernon Adams got the nod at quarterback for Montreal and finished with 173 passing yards and a touchdown toss to receiver Jake Wieneke.

The Als’ defence did their part to keep Montreal in the game early on, finishing with three interceptions and a forced fumble on a big goal line stand.

Standout Ticats defensive lineman Ted Laurent notched a sack on the opening drive of the game to force a quick two-and-out, but Masoli was picked off by defensive back Tommie Campbell on the ensuing drive while attempting to complete a deep pass to receiver Mike Jones. The interception was the first for the Als’ defence this season.

Adams and running back William Stanback began to lead the Montreal offence down the field, and a big sideline catch from B.J. Cunningham put the team in position to score. But the Als’ drive stalled after a big sack from Davis drove the offence back, forcing Montreal to punt the ball.

The Ticats added an interception of their own later in the first quarter when defensive back Cariel Brooks got his hands on a short Adams pass intended for Cunningham on an out route. Hamilton was close to converting the turnover into points, but a 46-yard field goal attempt from kicker Lirim Hajrullahu came up short.

Thomas-Erlington began to find space in the second quarter, moving the sticks with a 13-yard run. Masoli followed up the positive gain with one of his biggest throws of the first half, a 42-yard bomb to Banks. The big gain set up a scoring opportunity with the Ticats’ offence on the doorstep, and quarterback Dane Evans successfully put his team on the board first with a one-yard rushing score. Masoli completed the two-point convert pass to Bralon Addison on the next play to give Hamilton an 8-0 lead.

The Als responded with a successful 46-yard field from kicker Boris Bede that was set up by a 21-yard catch-and-run from running back Ryder Stone.

But the Ticats got right back to business on offence, with Banks showing off his explosive skill set by gaining 20 yards on a catch and following it up with a beautiful 30-yard touchdown run. The speedy Banks made multiple defenders miss as he took off towards the end zone for the score. Hajrullahu capped off the quick scoring drive with the extra point kick to put the Ticats up 15-3.

Montreal’s offence appeared to be getting things on track on the following drive, but a big sack up the middle by defensive tackle Dylan Wynn forced the Als to punt. That is when a huge 63-yard punt return from Frankie Williams put Hamilton right back in scoring position. But Montreal linebacker Henoc Muamba led an incredible goal line stand to deny the Ticats three times in a row and prevent the team from adding to its lead before half time. Muamba and the Als’ defensive front was dominant to end the drive, with the linebacker forcing a fumble on Evans to end things in the first half.

Thomas-Erlington broke things open to start the third quarter by getting deep for a 75-yard touchdown catch, his first score of the season. Thomas-Erlington turned on the jets to gain 40 yards after the catch and find pay dirt. It only took the Ticats three plays to go down the field to add to their lead, and Masoli added the two-point convert with a throw to Nikola Kalinic on the next play to put the Ticats up 23-3.

Montreal’s defensive unit continued to keep the Als in the game, adding their second interception of the night when Masoli’s pass into double coverage wound up in the hands of defensive back Greg Reid. But Banks stepped up big once again on Hamilton’s next offensive drive with a 47-yard catch-and-run, setting up a 34-yard field goal from Hajrullahu that extended the Ticats’ lead to 23 points.

Montreal got into the end zone for the first time shortly before the third quarter ended, with Adams completing a solid 27-yard touchdown pass down the field to receiver Wieneke. The touchdown score was the first of Wieneke’s CFL career. Bede added the extra point to make the score 32-10.

Defensive play continued to be the strong point for Montreal in the fourth quarter, with Reid adding his second interception of the night by picking off a pass intended for Addison near the goal line. But Masoli quickly bounced back from the turnover by leading the Ticats to another touchdown, this time carrying it into the end zone himself for the score after taking the offence down the field.

Masoli’s physical nine-yard touchdown run was followed up by a two-point convert catch from Thomas-Erlington, giving Hamilton a 24-point lead with just over 10 minutes to go.

The Ticats added to their lead once again down the stretch to seal the victory, with a 36-yard punt return from Williams and solid gains from Erlington-Thomas setting up another rushing score from Masoli. Hajrullahu added the convert kick to give Hamilton the 41-10 home win.

Week 4 will see the Montreal Alouettes and Hamilton Tiger-Cats square off once again, with the Ticats heading on the road next Thursday to face the Als at Percival-Molson Memorial Stadium on July 4.

Air Force- Falcons went 5-7 last two years, unusual for them; last three years, they’re 6-17-1 vs spread in Mountain West games- last four years,AF is 10-3-1 vs spread as a road underdog. Flyboys have covered 11 of last 13 non-conference games.

Boise State-Broncos won 10+ games eight of last ten years, are +24 in turnovers the last two years. Boise’s bowl game in Dallas LY was stopped late in 1st quarter LY because of bad weather and was never resumed. Broncos are 5-14 vs spread in last 19 games as a home favorite.

Colorado State- Rams slumped to 3-9 LY after five straight winning years; last two years, State is 1-7 vs spread as a home favorite. Rams lost last four bowl games, allowing average of 41.3 ppg; they lost last four games with rival Colorado (0-3-1 vs spread).

Nevada- New QB, four new starters on OL for Wolf Pack this year, who are 8-4 vs spread at home in two years under Norvell; five of their top six rushers, nine of top 10 receivers are back. Last three years, Nevada is 4-9 vs spread in non-league games.

UNLV- Five straight losing years for Rebels, who move into the Raiders’ new dome next year; they’ve played in one bowl since 2000. Last three years, UNLV is 4-9 vs spread when laying points at home. Rebels’ last bowl win outside of Las Vegas was 1984 (30-13 vs Toledo).

New Mexico- Bob Davie is in his 8th year with Lobos; they went 3-9 last two years. Last time UNM played in a bowl other than on their home field was a 34-19 loss to Navy in ’04 Emerald Bowl. New Mexico has only two starters back on defense this year.

San Diego State- Nine straight winning years for Aztecs, who slumped to 7-6 LY; – they were 0-8 vs spread as a favorite, and were blanked by Ohio U in their bowl (27-0). Aztecs have top six rushers back from LY and three starters back on OL.

San Jose State- Spartans are 3-22 in two years under Brennan; they were +1 in turnovers LY, after going -26 in 2017. Last five years, State is 9-19 as a road underdog, but were 4-2 LY. SJS won last four bowls, but last one was in 2015.

Utah State- Aggies went 11-2 LY, after three straight losing seasons; their coach moved on, so the new coach is Gary Andersen, who went 26-24 as Aggies’ coach from 2009-12. USU has only two starters back on offense. Since ’16, Aggies are 10-2-1 as home favorites.

Wyoming- After going +24 in turnovers in ’17 with a 8-5 record, Cowboys were 6-6 LY with a +4 TO ratio. Last three years, Cowboys are 6-2 as home favorites, 8-4 as home dogs- last four years, they’re 19-13 vs spread as an underdog.

Game Overview

The arrival of Mike Reilly as BC’s new starting quarterback drew the attention of the betting public when it came to the team’s CFL futures odds to win this season’s Grey Cup title. It has been a rocky start for Reilly through his first two games with 473 yards passing on a completion rate of 54.5 percent. He has thrown for two touchdowns against three interceptions. The Lions’ leading rusher has been John White with 28 yards on 12 carries.

Week 3 will be a good test to see if Calgary’s 32-28 loss to Ottawa in Week 1 as a nine-point favorite was just a fluke. The Stampeders’ lineup on both sides of ball is filled with quite a few new faces from last season’s championship run. Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 275 yards with one touchdown pass and one interception in the season opener. He completed 59.0 percent of his 39 passing attempts. Calgary’s defense gave up 276 yards through the air and another 125 yards on the ground against the RedBlacks.

BC LIONS AT CALGARY STAMPEDERS

In Week 1 the Stampeders showed their vulnerabilty on defense by allowing the Redblacks to score 32 points against them at home. Calgary's strong defense last year was built around their terrific D-Line and the departure of three starters from that unit has hurt.

That should allow Mike Reilly to finally play like the QB that the Lions thought they had when they spent a boatload of money on him as a free agent. Reilly has been a disappointment through the first two games of the year but, at least on paper, the Lions still have a dangerous offense with Reilly airing the ball out to Bryan Burnham and Duron Carter (son of NFL Hall of Famer Chris Carter).

The Stamps should also be able to put up points thanks to one of the top quarterbacks in the game in Bo Levi Mitchell and a squad of talented weapons surrounding him. The Lions allowed 33 points to Winnipeg in Week 1 and 39 points to Edmonton last week. With this game having the lowest total of the week grab the Over.

LIONS, STAMPS SEARCH FOR FIRST WIN SATURDAY NIGHT

CALGARY – The CFL’s two most recent MOPs will go head to head at McMahon Stadium Saturday, when the BC Lions travel to visit the Calgary Stampeders.

Quarterbacks Bo Levi Mitchell and Mike Reilly have shared the last three Most Outstanding Player Awards, with Mitchell winning a pair (2016 and 2018) and Reilly taking home one (2017).

The two pivots have long been regarded as the league’s best and are no strangers to one another. This will be the 14th meeting between them, with Mitchell holding a 7-4 record over Reilly. Of those 14 meetings, three have come in the playoffs.

The two men find themselves in the top-20 on the all-time CFL passing yards list, with Mitchell having just cracked the exclusive club in Week 1. Mitchell passed legendary Canadian QB Russ Jackson of the Ottawa Rough Riders.

Despite the pedigree of their quarterbacks, the Lions and Stampeders are both looking for their first win of the season.

DeVone Claybrooks’ tenure as a head coach has not gotten off to an ideal start, with the Lions dropping their first two games by double-digit margins. Claybrooks will be coaching against his former colleagues on Saturday – he spent seven years on the Calgary coaching staff, including three as the defensive coordinator, after finishing his playing career in Cowtown.

“It’s an important game because it’s the next game,” Claybrooks told BCLions.com. “Every team has a history with other teams. I still have a house there and I still enjoy it and it has a special place in my heart and everything like that but I’m here in BC to win games and put a good product on the field.”

A bright spot for BC has been Bryan Burnham, who emerged as Reilly’s favourite target. Through the first two weeks, the six-year veteran was second in the league in receiving yards, thanks mainly to a big, 153-yard performance in Week 1. With Burnham, Duron Carter and Lemar Durant on the roster, the Lions aerial attack should find its form.

However, the Lions run game has not looked encouraging, earning only 57 yards in two games. Veteran tailback John White simply hasn’t been able to replicate the play that saw him earn all-star honours with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2014, but the season is still young.

The running game of the Stamps was also uncharacteristically quiet in Week 1. Don Jackson, Calgary’s breakout star last season, could only manage 43 yards against a stiff REDBLACK run defence. The 25-year-old looked frustrated at times, even taking an objectionable conduct penalty in the second half.

“We’re human. We make mistakes,” Jackson told Stampeders.com. “The bye week was good for us, I think. Everybody got to double-down and feel real good about their body. Can we be better? Yes. Of course. Will we be better? Yes. Of course.”

A shocking stat from Calgary’s loss to the REDBLACKS; the defending Grey Cup champions didn’t put up a single point on offence in the second half. For a team that is used to do minating the opposition (Mitchell’s career winning percentage of .805 is the highest ever for a quarterback), that is completely unexpected. The franchise did lose half their starters from the Grey Cup last season, but they’ll look to get back on track at home.

The Stampeders defence had a game to remember in the turnover department. Calgary notched four interceptions against Dominique Davis, three of which belonged to Tre Roberson. Then again, it was Davis’s first game as the REDBLACKS starter, and Reilly will be playing in his 142nd contest on Saturday.

“We want to make him uncomfortable,” Stamps head coach Dave Dickenson said to Stampeders.com of Reilly. “We have to play our defence. We’ll see what they come up with to try to protect him and control the clock, but we’ve got to worry about ourselves – make sure we play well and play physical.”

A major storyline from the orange and black’s Week 2 loss to Edmonton was the play of the Eskimos front seven. Reilly was sacked seven times, and the offensive line knows their play must improve if the team is going to find success.

“We’re going to work harder and try to be more physical up front,” lineman Sukh Chungh explained. “Practice is a little ramped up; something we needed. It’s good for us. We need to be better than we were last week and that’s the mindset going into every week.”

Week 3 is far too early to start dubbing games “must-win,” but both the Stamps and the Leos are in desperate need of a victory.

STAMPS COMPLETE INCREDIBLE COMEBACK AGAINST LIONS TO GRAB FIRST WIN

CALGARY — Quarterbacks Nick Arbuckle and Bo Levi Mitchell led the Calgary Stampeders to a fourth quarter comeback victory against the BC Lions on Saturday night, with the Stamps coming out on top 36-32 to grab their first win of the season.

The Lions’ defence managed to keep Mitchell and the Calgary passing game in check early on, but the quarterback got things going in the second half and finished with 252 passing yards and two touchdowns. Arbuckle entered the game late in the fourth quarter to replace Mitchell after the quarterback left with an apparent shoulder injury, and the backup stepped up to complete all nine of his passes and lead the Stamps to two crucial touchdown drives.

Stamps receiver Eric Rogers had a huge game with three touchdowns and 100 receiving yards on nine catches, and Markeith Ambles led all receivers in yardage with nine catches for 108 yards.

Costly penalties put Calgary behind early on, with the Lions scoring three touchdowns off roughing the passer, pass interference and roughing the kicker penalties.

Mike Reilly was extremely efficient and effective all night long for BC, completing 86 per cent of his passes for 354 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Running back John White also had a strong performance for the Lions, contributing 151 total yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Bryan Burnham chipped in 10 catches for 94 yards, while Lemar Durant finished with five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown.

Stamps defensive back Tre Roberson appeared to continue his hot start to the season on the opening drive by grabbing his fourth interception and taking it to the end zone, but the scoring play was reversed after the Lions successfully challenged for a roughing the passer call. Reilly and the BC offence capitalized on the second opportunity with the quarterback throwing a 15-yard swing pass touchdown to running back John White on the very next play.

The milestone touchdown pass was the 150th of Reilly’s CFL career, and Reilly completed the two-point convert pass to receiver Jevon Cottoy on the following play to give BC the early 8-0 advantage.

The Lions added to their first quarter lead after a costly pass interference call against Calgary placed the ball on the one-yard line. Receiver Bryan Burnham drew the penalty by going up high for a pass while being double-covered in the end zone. BC made the most of the positive field position with White taking the short hand off and scoring his third touchdown of the season. Kicker Sergio Castillo added the extra point to put the Lions up 15-0.

Calgary got on the board just after the start of the second quarter when punter Rob Maver sent a kick through the end zone for a single point.

The Stamps were close to having a key defensive stop after a big sack from linebacker Wynton McManis forced BC to punt, but a roughing the kicker penalty extended the Lions’ drive. Reilly seized the opportunity provided by the Calgary penalty and added to his team’s lead with a beautiful 22-yard touchdown pass to receiver Lemar Durant on a deep out route.

Reilly stood tall and took a hit while making the touchdown throw, his thirteenth consecutive completion of the game. Castillo’s extra point attempt hit the upright, leaving the Lions with 21-1 lead.

Mitchell began to get things going for Calgary near the end of the second quarter, with the quarterback driving the Stamps’ offence down the field for five first downs and their best possession of the half. Mitchell completed key throws to receivers Michael Klukas, Reggie Begelton and Markeith Ambles before finding Eric Rogers for a three-yard touchdown pass. Calgary added the two-point convert with Ambles taking a short pass from Mitchell and fighting his way into the end zone, cutting BC’s lead down to 12 points.

But BC continued to move the ball on offence, and Reilly responded to the Calgary touchdown with another big drive. The Lions’ offence quickly drove down the field once again and was on the doorstep in position to score until a solid goal line stand from Calgary’s defensive front shut down the drive. Stamps defensive back Royce Metchie finished the drive off with a third down tackle to keep Reilly out of the end zone on a quarterback sneak, leaving BC with a 22-10 lead heading into half time.

The Lions managed to get some momentum back at the start the third quarter when defensive back Aaron Grymes made an impressive play to intercept Mitchell, but BC’s offence was unable to convert the turnover into points. The interception was the first for the Lions’ defence this season.

Calgary continued to chip away at the Lions’ lead with a 43-yard field goal from kicker Rene Paredes, making the score 22-13. But Reilly put distance between the two teams once again by responding with a field goal drive. Castillo made the 21-yard kick to put the Lions up 25-13 in the fourth quarter.

The Stamps found a big momentum boost after that when Mitchell found Rogers deep down the field for a 42-yard touchdown. Mitchell then completed another pass in traffic to Rogers for the two-point convert, cutting the BC lead down to just four points.

But Calgary simply could not find a way to slow down Reilly and the efficient BC offence. The quarterback put together a lengthy drive with sharp and accurate throws, leading his team down the field and finishing off the 12-play, 76-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run up the middle. Castillo added the extra point to put the Lions up 32-21.

Things took a bad turn for Calgary after that when Mitchell was forced to leave the game with what appeared to be a shoulder injury. But Arbuckle came in at quarterback for the Stamps and led the team down the field with under two minutes to go. Arbuckle capped off the drive with a one-yard rushing score, and the quarterback completed the two-point convert pass to follow it up and make the score 32-28 with 1:20 remaining.

The Stamps then recovered an onside kick and proceeded to make magic happen once again on offence with Arbuckle. The quarterback capped off a beautiful drive with a three-yard touchdown pass to Rogers to give Calgary its first and only lead of the game.

Week 4 will see the BC Lions face the Toronto Argonauts on the road next Saturday, while the Calgary Stampeders will be on the road against the Saskatchewan Roughriders next Saturday.

13) Today is June 30 but we’re going to hear a lot of stuff about the NBA starting tonight, with free agency starting. NBA’s offseason is often more interesting than the season itself.

12) New York 17, Boston 13— Game was 6-6 after the first inning with neither pitcher getting three outs; this game looked more like beer league softball than major league baseball.

11) At 2:13 Saturday afternoon, after the 6-6 first inning, Dave Cokin posted on Twitter that in live betting, the total on the New York-Boston game was 23.5 (+$130). It went way over that.

10) Lot of college basketball coaches are over in Greece for the FIBA u19 World Cup, where there are six uncommitted American 5-star prospects playing, as well as several prospects from Canada and Puerto Rico- the tournament runs thru July 7th.

9) Mets’ manager Mickey Callaway makes $850,000 to manage the Mets, and in reality, he is just a button-pusher who is ordered around by the team’s GM. Not a lot of cash for a manager, and in a big market at that.

What I’m suggesting is that being the Indians’ pitching coach might be a better job than managing the Mets, seeing how the Indians’ pitching coach probably makes around $250,000 with a hell of a lot less stress and a lot more job security than Callaway has now, and he actually gets to coach the pitchers.

8) Orioles 13, Indians 0— Over last two days, Baltimore outscored the Tribe 26-0.

Orioles are 24-58 this season, but 10-6 when Andrew Cashner starts. Cashner should be the O’s representative on the All-Star team.

7) Baseball stuff:
— Cardinals put OF Marcell Ozuna (broken finger) on the IL.
— Cubs DFA’d OF Carlos Gonzalez.
— Red Sox put P Brian Johnson (non-baseball injury) on the IL.
— Twins activated Byron Buxton, Martin Gonzalez from the IL.

6) Nikola Mirotic signed a contract with Barcelona of the EuroLeague; most people thought he would get an NBA deal for $45-50M, but sounds like he didn’t like the NBA very much.

5) Hamilton 41, Montreal 10— CFL games don’t often have scoreless first quarters; according to Ralph Michaels on Twitter, this was just the 27th scoreless first quarter in the last 973 CFL tilts. 24 of those 27 games stayed under the total, including this one.

4) This week is the first time since 2005 that the 54-hole leader at PGA Tour events led by 6+ shots in back/back weeks. Nate Lashley shot a 63 Saturday, is 23-under thru three rounds.

3) SLS casino in Las Vegas is changing its name back to the Sahara Las Vegas: I stayed there for ten days in 2015. Nice enough casino, small rooms, very tight video poker, good eating places, but no sports book, just a counter in a restaurant to bet on games.

Game Overview

Toronto started this season pretty much the way it played last season with a bad loss. The 2017 Grey Cup Champions sunk to just four straight-up victories last year. The Argonauts’ defense allowed a touchdown on six consecutive Hamilton drives in Saturday’s loss, in what was the team’s worst loss ever in this heated East Division battle. James Franklin got the call at quarterback and he threw for 211 yards and no scores against one interception. Mcleod Bethel-Thompson completed nine-of-16 passes for 99 yards and the team’s only touchdown throw.

The Roughriders hung tight against Ottawa last Thursday coming off a tough loss to Hamilton on the road in Week 1. With quarterback Zach Collaros once again sidelined with an injury, Cody Fajardo took over the reins and completed 27 of his 34 passing attempts against the RedBlacks for 360 yards and two touchdowns against zero interceptions. Saskatchewan’s defense allowed 354 yards and three scores through the air.

TORONTO ARGONAUTS AT SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

I faded Riders replacement QB Cody Fajardo last week and paid the price. Fajardo completed 27 of 34 passes for 360 yards and two touchdowns, and the Riders put up 41 points against the Redblacks in a three-point loss. Fajardo and dangerous running back William Powell should have a big game on Canada Day against an Argonauts defense that was gashed for 64 points by Hamilton last Saturday.

Toronto's offense wasn't much better with 14 points and 322 yards but has the talent to play much better with S.J. Green, Armanti Edwards and Derel Walker catching passes and James Wilder Jr. running the ball.

Saskatchewan's defense played very well in Week 1 against Hamilton before getting shredded for 447 yards and 44 points against Ottawa. With the O/U set at a very reasonable 53.5, back the Over.

CODY FAJARDO LEADS RIDERS TO DECISIVE WIN OVER ARGOS

REGINA — Cody Fajardo led the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 32-7 Canada Day victory over the Toronto Argonauts on Monday, with the quarterback accounting for a career-best 430 passing yards and three total touchdowns. The Riders excelled on both sides of the ball to grab their first win of the season in the home opener.

Fajardo put the Riders up early and had a huge first half with 293 passing yards, two touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown.

Riders receiver Kyran Moore contributed another big performance by reeling in four passes for 127 yards, including an incredible 98-yard touchdown. Shaq Evans also stretched the field for the Riders and caught five passes for 112 yards.

Running back William Powell provided valuable yardage for Saskatchewan, accumulating 112 total yards on the ground and in the air.

James Franklin was up against a strong defensive showing from the Riders and finished with 224 yards and a touchdown on 20 completions before leaving with an injury in the fourth quarter. Franklin also added 34 rushing yards.

Saskatchewan’s defence got to the Argos’ quarterbacks for four sacks and two interceptions, with defensive end Charleston Hughes notching two sacks for the second straight game.

The Riders had a big play right off the bat when Christion Jones returned the opening kickoff 43 yards up the middle to give Fajardo and the offence solid field position. Fajardo then fired completions to Evans and Cory Watson for consecutive first downs, but the Argos’ defence stood strong and forced Saskatchewan to settle for a short field goal. Brett Lauther knocked the 2o-yard kick through the uprights to put the Riders up early. Lauther added a 33-yard field goal soon after to extend Saskatchewan’s first quarter lead.

The Argos then began to move the ball on offence until Riders linebacker Derrick Moncrief made a strong play to intercept a Franklin pass over the middle. The play was the first interception for the Riders’ defence this season. Fajardo then continued to look sharp passing the ball and did not waste time capitalizing on the Toronto turnover.

The Saskatchewan quarterback showed exceptional touch and accuracy to find Moore for an incredible 98-yard touchdown strike. Fajardo placed the ball perfectly over Moore’s shoulder as the receiver streaked down the field, and Moore took the ball 40 yards after the catch to find paydirt. The play was the longest completion for Saskatchewan since the 2002 season. Lauther added the convert kick to put Saskatchewan up 13-0 heading into the second quarter.

Saskatchewan kept things rolling on both sides of the ball with stingy defensive play and an effective passing game. Receiver Naaman Roosevelt hauled in a 33-yard pass from Fajardo on a jump ball down the right side of the field against defensive back Caleb Ham, and Watson then took a short pass and made a move to break a tackle and get across the goal line for the score. But the ensuing two-point convert attempt was shut down with Argos defensive back Abdul Kanneh in tight coverage against Roosevelt.

Fajardo led another impressive scoring drive just before halftime, completing a deep 42-yard pass to Evans and capping off the drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak rushing touchdown. Powell also helped set up the score with 14 rushing yards and an 18-yard catch-and-run on the drive. Lauther added the extra point after a lengthy weather delay due to thunder and lightning.

The Argos looked like a different team after the delay, with Franklin stepping up under pressure while taking a hit to complete a 56-yard bomb to receiver Derel Walker. Running back James Wilder Jr. followed up the big play with a 14-yard catch-and-run, and Franklin put the Argos on the board with a 12-yard touchdown pass to receiver Llevi Noel. Drew Brown kicked the extra point to make the score 26-7. Toronto went 92 yards in just over a minute.

Fajardo responded by leading the Riders on another scoring drive, this time ending with a 21-yard field goal from Lauther after Fajardo drove the team down the field with throws to receivers K.D. Cannon and Evans. Powell also chipped in 21 yards on the drive.

Franklin was leading another promising drive in the fourth quarter until he was intercepted by defensive back Nick Marshall in the end zone while trying to get a deep touchdown pass to receiver S.J. Green. Lauther later added a 45-yard field goal to put the Riders up 32-7 with 10 minutes to play.

Franklin left the game due to injury after taking a sack from Hughes with five and a half minutes to go. McLeod Bethel-Thompson came in to replace Franklin under centre for Toronto, but the Riders remained in control to walk away with their first win.

Both teams will be in action again this Saturday night, with the Toronto Argonauts hosting the BC Lions and the Saskatchewan Roughriders hosting the Calgary Stampeders.

12) 29 years ago today was the only time I was ever fired from a job; it was a job in the NY State court system, and I was there for 10 months- the person they wanted to have the job didn’t score well enough on her civil service test, so they needed a schmuck to fill the item until she became reachable on the list.

I was that schmuck.

So on July 2, 1990 I was told to take a hike by the Chief Clerk, which taught me a few lessons, the biggest one being: Money ain’t everything; happiness is way more valuable.

Don’t stress out about things you can’t control. Do your best, be a good person, and things will work out well enough in the end. Health and happiness are the most important things.

In 1976, the Eagles hired Dick Vermeil as coach; he had open tryouts for the public- a 30-year old bartender made the team as a special teams player, a story that was chronicled in the fine movie Invincible, with Mark Wahlberg.

That summer, the Eagles did 2-a-day practices six days a week for six weeks, played six games in the preseason. Now, 2-a-days are forbidden, they play four preseason games (the better players play 2 or 3 games, if that) and there is very little hitting in camp, to avoid injuries.

9) LSU’s football team hired former USC/Rams’ head coach John Robinson as a consultant; LSU coach Ed Orgeron became friends with Robinson when Orgeron was as assistant at USC. Robinson’s wife is from New Orleans; he last coached at UNLV in 2005, is 83 years old.

8) Tampa Bay Rays’ rookie Brendan McKay won his MLB debut on the mound over the weekend, allowing one hit, no runs in six IP. Monday night, he was the Rays’ DH.

4) Two Cleveland State basketball players joined the transfer portal Monday: Tyree Appleby (17.2 ppg, 5.6 apg) and Jaalam Hill (11.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg). There are rumors that four other players are also considering leaving- they’re not happy with coach Dennis Felton.

3) Charlie Blackmon hit .412 in June, scoring 30 runs, knocking in 25 in 22 games.

2) Kevin Durant played three whole seasons for Golden State, but the Warriors are going to retire his #35, which is weird. Golden State went 140-24 the two years before Durant got there, splitting a pair of Finals appearances. Will Andre Iguodala get his number 9 retired? Have to think Curry, Thompson, Green will all get theirs retired.

1) I’m guessing the people who make the NBA schedule (and TV schedule) have their hands full doing next season’s schedule— once the free agent dust settles, they can come up with the games they want to feature on opening night and Christmas Day.
