    Point-spread: Edmonton -10
    Total: 50

    Game Overview

After failing to cover against Ottawa, the Eskimos are 1-3 ATS in their last four games. The total stayed UNDER 49 points in Friday’s win and it has stayed UNDER in their last six games. Edmonton is 1-3 ATS in four previous road games this season. CJ Gable was the difference on Friday night with 116 yards rushing and a pair of scores on 18 rushing attempts. Trevor Harris completed 33-of-40 passing attempts for 327 yards, but he could not get Edmonton into the end zone through the air. He leads the CFL in total passing yards with 2,631 in eight games.

Toronto is coming off a bye after posting its first win of the season the week before against Winnipeg. The Argonauts stunned the Blue Bombers 28-27 as heavy 15-point home underdogs. They have covered in three of their last five games with the total staying UNDER in four of the seven games played. Toronto has closed as a double-digit underdog in five of its last six games. Mcleod Bethel-Thompson has taken the majority of the snaps at quarterback and he has tossed 10 touchdowns against nine interceptions.

    Betting Trends

-- Edmonton won the first meeting this season 26-0 as an 11-point home favorite. This was its sixth SU win against Toronto in the last eight meetings. The total stayed UNDER 52 points in that game, but it has gone OVER in 10 of the last 14 games in this inter-division tilt.

DOMINANT PASSING ATTACK LEADS ESKS PAST ARGOS
        CFL.CA STAFF

TORONTO — Trevor Harris passed for 420 yards and three touchdowns as the Edmonton Eskimos claimed a 41-26 road win over the Toronto Argonauts on Friday night. Receiver Greg Ellingson came through with a huge performance for the Esks, catching 10 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

The Esks made the most of their offensive opportunities in the first half by scoring a touchdown on each of their first three red zone trips, while their defensive front stepped up with key sacks to force four straight field goals from the Argos. Edmonton added to its league-leading sack total with four sacks in the first half.

Toronto’s offence began to find the end zone in the second half, and the Argos managed to battle back and make it a one-possession game in the fourth quarter after McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw his second touchdown pass. Edmonton put an end to Toronto’s comeback attempt with Harris’ second rushing touchdown of the game.

Harris continued his strong season by throwing for 243 yards and accounting for three total touchdowns in the first half alone. The 33-year-old quarterback finished the game with five total touchdowns while completing 28 of 41 passes.

DaVaris Daniels stepped up with his biggest game of the season for Edmonton, racking up 155 receiving yards on just five catches.

Bethel-Thompson completed 19 of 26 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns, also adding 38 rushing yards on five carries.

The Argos were driving down the field on their opening possession after a big 29-yard run from Brandon Burks got things going, but Edmonton’s defensive front got to Bethel-Thompson for two straight sacks to stall the drive and force a field goal. Tyler Crapigna knocked the 27-yard kick through to give Toronto an early three-point lead.

Edmonton responded on the next drive with a seven-play, 75-yard scoring drive that saw Harris move the sticks with multiple accurate throws to Ellingson. Ellingson made an outstanding over-the-shoulder grab to reel in a 33-yard pass from Harris that brought the ball into scoring range, and the receiver followed it up by catching a four-yard touchdown. Sean Whyte kicked the extra point to give the Esks a 7-3 lead.

The Argos made it a one-point game later in the first quarter after an exciting 48-yard kickoff return from Chris Rainey set up a 42-yard field goal from Crapigna.

Upon getting the ball back, Harris stretched the field and sparked more momentum with a 59-yard strike to Daniels deep down the right side of the field. Daniels accelerated past Argos defensive back Jonathan Dowling to get open for the catch, and the big play led to a one-yard rushing touchdown from Harris. Whyte added the extra point to put Edmonton up 14-6 heading into the second quarter.

A few solid runs from Rainey and a 15-yard rush from Bethel-Thompson had Toronto moving the ball on the next drive, but defensive end Kwaku Boateng brought Bethel-Thompson down for Edmonton’s third sack of the half to force yet another field goal. Crapigna hit the 20-yard kick to make it a 14-9 game.

Edmonton extended its lead before half-time with another touchdown drive. Daniels displayed tremendous skill by securing a 16-yard sideline catch, and Harris followed it up with an accurate four-yard touchdown toss to receiver Ricky Collins Jr. Whyte kicked the convert to put the Esks up 21-9 with just over three minutes left in the half.

Bethel-Thompson had Toronto driving before half-time by throwing completions to receivers Derel Walker and S.J. Green before following it up with a 20-yard run, but the Esks’ defence dismantled the promising drive with a big sack from defensive lineman Jesse Joseph. The Argos opted for a 32-yard field goal from Crapigna to cut into Edmonton’s lead.

But Edmonton was not done there, as Harris found Daniels again deep down the field for a 57-yard connection that set up a field goal in the final seconds of the half. Whyte knocked the 15-yard field goal through the uprights to give the Green and Gold a 24-12 lead heading into the third quarter.

The Argos began to get things rolling offensively after the half, with Bethel-Thompson leading a nine-play, 83-yard scoring drive. Burks got things started with a 16-yard run before receiver Rodney Smith came up with a highlight-reel grab to put the offence in scoring position.

Smith stretched out as far as he could to make the 25-yard catch, and Bethel-Thompson capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown pass to Green. Crapigna added the extra point to make it a 24-19 game.

Edmonton answered back right away on offence, with Harris orchestrating another efficient scoring drive through the air. Harris connected with Ellingson for a 19-yard gain before the receiver scored his second touchdown a few plays later on an incredible diving catch in the back corner of the end zone. Whyte added the convert kick to put the Esks up 31-19.

The Esks extended their lead in the fourth quarter with a 13-yard field goal from Whyte after the Argos got a defensive stop in the red zone. Toronto’s offence capitalized on the opportunity after getting the ball back, with Bethel-Thompson putting together a quick two-play scoring drive that saw Armanti Edwards catch a 33-yard pass and Burks catch a 27-yard touchdown. Crapigna added the extra point to make the score 34-26.

But Harris added his second rushing touchdown of the game down the stretch to seal the 41-26 victory for Edmonton.

Week 11 will see the Edmonton Eskimos host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers next Friday, while the Toronto Argonauts will face off with the Montreal Alouettes at home next Sunday.

            Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

            13) Cubs led the Phillies 5-0 after seven innings Thursday night; Yu Darvish was dominant, giving up four hits, throwing only 92 pitches, but they took him out after seven innings. Why?

Darvish has thrown 100+ pitches in four starts this year, but hasn’t gotten an out after the 7th inning all season. Cubs’ bullpen blew this game; Phillies scored six runs in bottom of 9th inning, won 7-5, and there is unrest in Wrigleyville.

One professional gambler called it: “…….Cubs loser. Absolutely my worst beat of the season. Joe Maddon should have to pay off every Cubs bet. Idiot.”

            12) Christian Yelich, Matt Chapman have both hit 15 homers this year that put their team ahead in the game, which is tied for most in the major leagues this season.

            11) I say this every year, but every NFL team should have to dress three QB’s every game, even if the #3 QB is a designated 48th man on the roster— it is for the quality of the product, so people want to watch the games.

Few years ago, Houston lost their starting QB on the first series of the game, so they couldn’t run any long passes the rest of the day- if the #2 QB had gotten hurt, they would’ve had to use a WR and run the option the rest of the game. Thats not professional-level football.

NFL teams make a bleeping fortune; every team can afford to keep a #3 QB around. Eagles have already had two backup QB’s KO’d in their preseason games the month.

            10) There was a guy on NFL Network talking about fantasy football who says he has a team in 12 different leagues this season. How the hell does he keep track of all of them?

            9) 49ers are only team in NFL with more $$$ per year invested in running backs than receivers.

            8) From Warren Sharp:
            W-L records of top-15 draft pick QB’s since 2012:
            • As rookies: 45-70 (39%)
            • In year two: 97-56 (63%)

            7) Baseball stuff:
            — A’s DFA’d C Dustin Garneau.
            — Royals DFA’d OF Billy Hamilton, who runs fast but can’t hit.
            — Cubs brought 2B Addison Russell up from AAA, demoted OF Albert Almora.
            — San Diego put 2B Ian Kinsler (back) on the IL.

            6) Padres’ rookie SS Fernando Tatis Jr (back) is likely out for the season.

            5) Baltimore Ravens have now won their last 15 exhibition games (13-2 vs spread).

            4) From Joe Sheehan:
The percentage of runs scored in the major leagues on home runs is now a tick over 45%. The previous record is 42.3%, and until 2015 it had never been over 37%.

            3) Saw something on Twitter about Steak ’n Shake and In-n-Out Burger, and immediately I got hungry. We really do need a Steak ’n Shake in suburban Albany, preferably south Colonie.

            2) With 2:49 left in a meaningless exhibition game Thursday, rookie WR Andy Isabella caught a 59-yard TD pass from rookie QB Charles Kanoff. A kid from Princeton throwing a TD pass to a kid from UMass— it was cool to see the QB’s reaction/smile, a good moment.

Isabella is going to make the Cardinals’ roster, Kanoff may or may not (practice squad?), but it was certainly a moment he will never forget.

            1) NFL preseason is a time for overreactions:
            — Last week: Kyler Murray is the second coming of Michael Vick.
            — This week: Murray is too short; why did Arizona hire Kingsbury?

REDBLACKS, TICATS SET FOR FIRST MEETING OF 2019

OTTAWA — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats can further assert themselves as the best team in the CFL’s East Division on Saturday afternoon when they take on the Ottawa REDBLACKS at TD Place in the nation’s capital.

The division rivals only square off twice in 2019, but it’s usually a good one when they meet. Four of the teams’ last five meetings have been decided by six points or less, including two comebacks from double-digit deficits for the REDBLACKS.

“We’ve established a pretty good little rivalry here,” Tiger-Cats head coach Orlondo Steinauer told Ticats.ca. “They got us pretty good last year. We love the atmosphere here and we expect it to be a battle. This is a fun place to play – the fans are always really into it.”

Hamilton fell to the REDBLACKS at TD Place in last season’s Eastern final. This will be the first regular season meeting between the teams since that 46-27 thumping. Both teams have undergone significant changes in the months since, especially at the quarterback position.

Dane Evans looked every bit a CFL starter in Week 9, guiding the Tiger-Cats to a thrilling comeback victory over the BC Lions. The first-year starter erased a 15-point deficit, the largest comeback for the Black and Gold since 2016.

“I’m still trying to get used to everything and just taking everything one day at a time,” Evans said. “[Jeremiah Masoli’s] the ultimate pro. I model how I prepare after what I saw him do. Even when I was a third-string guy, I was always sitting and watching and listening. I try to do that, but also put my own spin on some things.”

Meanwhile, Dominique Davis’s 11 interceptions are the most in the CFL. Davis has thrown a pick in five of his six games played.

One glaring difference between the REDBLACKS of 2018 and the REDBLACKS of 2019 is the usage of Brad Sinopoli. The reigning Most Outstanding Canadian simply isn’t seeing the ball as much – he has 47 targets for 31 receptions and 311 yards through eight games. At this same point in 2018, he had been targeted 76 times, accumulating 724 receiving yards.

Ottawa cut ties with starting receivers Noel Thomas and Julian Feoli-Gudino this week, giving other wideouts the opportunity to step up. Caleb Holley factors into the starting lineup, as does Canadian Nate Behar.

“We’re looking to take advantage when we can,” Behar told OttawaREDBLACKS.com. “They play a lot of soft coverage. They’re going to make us be patient and be efficient. When they finally get a little excited and try to bring some pressure, it’ll be time to take them deep.”

Brandon Banks turned in another vintage performance last week against the Lions. Not only did he haul in the game-winning touchdown, he put up 100 or more all-purpose yards for the 18th time in his last 26 starts.

The Tiger-Cats are still trying to cope with the loss of running back Sean Thomas-Erlington. The Canadian back went down in Week 4, and the ground game hasn’t been the same since in The Hammer. Cameron Marshall made his season debut last week, notching 40 yards on seven touches. If Hamilton can find a good run-pass balance that partially takes the load of the shoulders of Evans, the REDBLACKS could be in trouble.

As for the Ottawa rushing game, John Crockett has been a pleasant surprise. The 27-year-old has rushed for at least 62 yards in each of his first five games, averaging 5.9 yards-per-carry, but he will be watching from the sidelines due to injury on Saturday. Mossis Madu will get the start at tailback.

“He’s just banged up – part of playing football week in and week out,” REDBLACKS head coach Rick Campbell said when asked about Crockett. “We’ve got a fresh guy here who’s a good player, so we’re going to go with the fresh guy.”

RNation will be hoping Madu can recapture the magic that saw him light up the Calgary Stampeders to the tune of 112 rushing yards in Week 1, earning Top Performer of the Week consideration in the process. However, Madu hasn’t played in over a month – his last game was in Week 5 when he ran for 47 yards against Montreal.

Ottawa will also be without star return specialist DeVonte Dedmon, who finds himself on the injured list this week. Stefan Logan was brought in to fill the void. At 38-years-old, he is among the oldest active players in the league.

TICATS DOWN REDBLACKS TO CLAIM SEVENTH WIN

OTTAWA — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats battled their way to a 21-7 road win against the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Saturday, improving their record to 7-2 while establishing an eight-point lead in the East Division.

Dane Evans threw for 299 yards and a touchdown while completing 24 of 39 passes, and Bralon Addison led the way for Hamilton with eight catches for 100 yards.

Both teams traded single points after missing field goals in the first quarter, and a tight defensive battle continued after that with defensive back Antoine Pruneau intercepted Evans in the end zone later in the quarter.

Hamilton took the lead in the second quarter on a short field goal from Lirim Hajrullahu, and David Watford crossed the goal line on a quarterback sneak in the third quarter to help extend the lead to ten points. Lewis Ward kicked a 26-yard field goal later in the third to bring Ottawa closer and make it a one-possession game, and the REDBLACKS notched another end zone interception after that when Anthony Cioffi picked off Evans.

Ward added a 40-yard field goal in the fourth quarter that cut Hamilton’s lead down to just four points, but the Ticats answered back with a long scoring drive that ended with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Evans to Jaelon Acklin. The Ticats extended their lead with Hajrullahu’s second field goal of the game, and the defence came up with a stop on third-and-goal late in the quarter to shut down Ottawa’s late comeback attempt.

Cameron Marshall had a solid game on the ground with 12 carries for 92 yards, while Luke Tasker added 83 receiving yards on six catches.

The Ticats got a spark on their first drive when Frankie Williams returned a punt 36 yards, but the offence was unable to move the chains from there and opted for a 43-yard field goal attempt from Hajrallahu. But the kick went wide to the right and ended up in the hands of Stefan Logan who took a knee to concede the single point.

The REDBLACKS added a single of their own later in the quarter after Ward’s 31-yard field goal attempt went wide and Tunde Adeleke conceded the point for Hamilton. The missed kick saw Ward’s historic streak of 69 consecutive successful field goals come to an end.

Hamilton’s offence began driving down the field upon getting the ball back, with Addison showcasing his game-breaking speed on a 38-yard catch-and-run. Marshall then broke off a 17-yard run to bring the ball into scoring position, but The REDBLACKS’ defence stepped up to slam the door shut in the red zone, as Pruneau picked off Evans while covering Brandon Banks in the end zone.

The Ticats took the lead early in the second quarter on a 12-yard field goal from Hajrullahu after Ottawa cut the drive short with a key second down sack from defensive lineman Michael Wakefield.

Hamilton scored the first major of the game in the third quarter after a five-play, 44-yard drive that ended with a one-yard quarterback sneak touchdown from Watford. The drive was aided by a successful Ticats challenge for defensive pass interference, resulting in a costly penalty against Cioffi that placed the ball at the one-yard line.

Logan returned the ensuing kickoff 37 yards to give Ottawa’s offence good starting field position, and receiver Dominique Rhymes followed it up with an incredible 47-yard catch. Rhymes beat defensive back Jumal Rolle deep down the right side of the field before coming back to the ball and reaching up high to make the catch. But Hamilton’s defence continued its stingy play by forcing the REDBLACKS to settle for a 26-yard field goal from Ward, making the score 11-4.

Ottawa’s secondary came up with another big red zone interception later in the third quarter when Cioffi intercepted Evans in the end zone. The pick was initially erased due to a pass interference penalty against Cioffi, but a successful challenge from Ottawa overturned the call.

The Ticats were about to add to their lead near the end of the third quarter with another field goal, but the kick attempt was unsuccessful after the snap went high and was mishandled.

Ottawa further cut into the Ticats’ lead with a 40-yard field goal from Ward that made it an 11-7 game with just over twelve minutes to play in the fourth, but the Ticats responded after that with their second touchdown drive of the game.

Hamilton drove down the field on an eight-play, 74-yard drive that saw Marshall break free for a 20-yard run before Acklin came through with a 20-yard catch and an 11-yard touchdown grab. Hajrullahu added the extra point to give the Ticats an 18-7 lead.

The Ticats extended their lead to 14 points later in the quarter on a 21-yard field goal from Hajrullahu.

The REDBLACKS had a promising drive going with under four minutes to play after Brad Sinopoli came up with a big 26-yard grab, but Hamilton’s defence shut the door on third-and-goal to force a turnover on downs and ultimately seal the victory.

Both teams will be action again next Saturday, with the Ottawa REDBLACKS travelling on the road to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders at 7:00 p.m. EDT, and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats facing the BC Lions in a road game at 10:00 p.m. EDT.

ONE FOR THE AGES: ALS STUN STAMPS IN OVERTIME THRILLER
                      CFL.CA STAFF

CALGARY — The Montreal Alouettes scored twice in the last 50 seconds of the game, then twice more in overtime to pull off a stunning 40-34 victory over the Calgary Stampeders on an unforgettable Saturday night at McMahon Stadium.

Eugene Lewis pulled Montreal to within a field goal, then recovered Boris Bede’s onside kick to give Montreal one last chance to tie the game in regulation. Then, after Bede’s fourth field goal of the game from 27 yards out forced overtime, Vernon Adams Jr. scored twice on quarterback sneaks in the extra frame to give the Alouettes a late lead.

The Stamps threatened to tie or win the game on one last gasp throw on third-and-14, and Eric Rogers appeared to have a game-tying touchdown on a toe-tapping grab in the end zone. But the official — and an automatic review — ruled his other foot touched down out of bounds first, clinching a dramatic comeback victory for the Alouettes.

Reggie Begelton caught four touchdown passes in the loss for the Stamps, including two in the fourth quarter and another in overtime, finishing his night with 173 yards on eight catches. Stamps quarterback Nick Arbuckle completed a sparkling 31 of 36 attempts — good for 86 per cent — for 370 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Rene Paredes kicked two field goals and Tre Roberson notched his sixth interception of the season, moving him into a tie for the league-lead with Winston Rose.

Adams, in his first game back from injury, threw two touchdown passes and rushed for two more, but was also intercepted twice. Jeremiah Johnson rushed for 107 yards on 13 carries in the absence of William Stanback, while DeVier Posey had 181 yards on 10 catches to lead the Alouettes in his return to the lineup.

Lewis was equally impressive for the Als, racking up 10 catches for 114 yards along with the onside kick recovery, a touchdown and a two-point convert.

The win was Montreal’s first at McMahon Stadium since 2009, when the Alouettes won the Grey Cup over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the infamous ’13th man’ game.

And, ominously, the drama seemed just as spectacular on Saturday, in a game that had just about everything.

With Stanback sidelined, Johnson continued to make the most of his opportunity early in this one, scampering 47 yards to eventually set up a 29-yard Bede field goal, putting the Alouettes on the board first.

The Stampeders responded late in the first quarter however, taking their first lead on a 12-yard catch-and-run by Begelton. Paredes would add the extra point, then another on the ensuing kickoff to give Calgary an 8-3 lead through 15 minutes.

Though the first half was mostly mistake-free, aside from a couple of major penalties and two interceptions by Adams, the offences failed to find much of a rhythm in a tightly-contested duel at McMahon. The Stamps would head to the lockers with a 14-6 lead with Paredes and Bede providing the only second-quarter points.

After a brief two-week layoff, Adams began to shake off the rust in the third quarter. The Alouettes’ dual-threat quarterback completed a 36-yard pass to Posey, his favourite target on the night, then followed up with connections to Johnson and Jake Wieneke, the latter going for a 15-yard touchdown pass to pull the Als within two.

For the opportunistic Wieneke it was his fourth touchdown grab of the season on just 11 catches. Lewis, meanwhile, would haul in the two-point convert to tie the game at 14 points apiece.

While the Alouettes’ defence continued to keep Arbuckle and the Stamps at bay, Bede’s third field goal of the evening — this one from 17 yards away — would cap off a time-consuming 11-play, 66-yard drive to give Montreal a 17-14 lead.

Suddenly, with a slight edge going into the fourth quarter, the Alouettes had a chance to do something they hadn’t since the Grey Cup in 1999: win at McMahon Stadium.

The Stampeders, however, had other ideas. On the very first drive of the fourth quarter, Arbuckle found Begelton clean in behind the defender, leading him to a 56-yard touchdown for his second of the night. The strike from Arbuckle restored Calgary’s lead, 21-17 just two minutes into the fourth.

That wasn’t it from Begelton, who seemingly caught lightning in a bottle at just the right time for the Stampeders. Minutes after giving his team the lead, Begelton would add what seemed like the insurance marker, again beating the Montreal secondary on the way to a 69-yard touchdown. Begelton’s third touchdown of the night extended Calgary’s lead to 28-17.

Just when all had seemed lost, the Alouettes found the end zone late when Adams connected with Lewis to cap off a six-play, 97-yard foray into the end zone, leaving 38 seconds left on the clock. That’s when the drama would really pick up, because on the ensuing onside kick — and after a delay of game penalty — Bede’s onside kick was perfectly placed and caught by a leaping Lewis, giving Montreal possession with half a minute remaining.

A quick completion to Lewis put the Alouettes on the outskirts of field goal range at the Calgary 48, followed by another completion to Posey — his 10th catch of the night — at the Calgary 35. After a close call that almost resulted in a Calgary interception, the Alouettes settled on a 27-yard field goal from Bede to force overtime.

In the extra frame, the Stamps took the field first, where Jackson converted a second down try before first round draft pick Hergy Mayala’s fourth catch of the evening moved the offence to the Montreal seven. On the next play, Arbuckle found Begelton for his fourth touchdown of the game, giving the Stamps a 34-28 lead.

Of course, in overtime, the two-point conversion is often critical. Alouettes defensive end John Bowman batted down Arbuckle’s toss, sending the Alouette offence on the field with a six-point deficit and a chance to win the game.

The Alouettes replied with an equalizer, working their way down the field with first downs from Lewis and a scramble from Adams to set up second-and-goal from the three. After a second-down run was stopped at the one, Adams made good on the third-and-one sneak, getting the six points after a delayed call from the official.

Needing just a two-point convert to win the game, however, Adams’ pass was perfectly defended by Roberson, forcing the Montreal offence back on the field.

The drama continued on the ensuing drive. On second down, Adams heaved one up under pressure and seemingly had an open Quan Bray — only for the ball to strike the crossbar of the upright. However, a roughing the passer penalty extended Montreal’s drive, while a first down grab by Bray moved the ball to the 10.

On the next play, Lewis’ big night continued, as he caught a quick swing pass and powered his way through a sea of red, seemingly scoring his second touchdown of the night and putting the Alouettes in the driver’s seat. But on an automatic review, Lewis was ruled down before the goal line. However, Adams would punch it in from the one, getting the Als right back in the end zone.

The two-point convert to Lewis failed, giving the Stampeders a window to win the game. The offence would respond accordingly, going to Jackson on the draw for a 25-yard scamper down to the Montreal 10.

On the next play, after play action, Arbuckle couldn’t find anyone open and was swarmed by the Alouettes’ defence for their second sack of the night. One short completion to Jackson later and the Stamps were in do-or-die territory, needing to score to survive on third down from 14 yards out.

From there, it seemed like Rogers may have done the unthinkable. The Stamps’ towering receiver hauled in Arbuckle’s pass in the back of the end zone and tapped one toe just in bounds — however the official ruled that his other foot touched out of bounds first.

An automatic review upheld the close call, clinching a wild 40-34 win for the Alouettes.

Though many of the Stamps faithful went home disappointed, they were at least entertained. The two clubs racked up a combined 1,023 yards of offence and 54 first downs, turning the ball over just four times in the process — two giveaways each.

Don Jackson finished with 77 yards on 13 carries in his return from injury, while Nate Holley led the way on defence with 12 tackles. DeShaun Amos added an interception.

In the background of Posey’s big night, Wieneke had one of the best nights of his young career, hauling in five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown.

The Alouettes will try to repeat their effort with a visit to Moncton, N.B. in Week 11 to take on the Argos in the CFL’s Touchdown Atlantic contest, while the Stamps head to the bye week before Mark’s Labour Day Weekend and the annual Labour Day Classic on Sept. 2 vs. Edmonton.

I think, a lot of times, and I understand that thought process, but I’m the one dealing with the individual player, and sometimes guys just aren’t ready. And the whole sink-or-swim mentality, it’s easy for somebody on the outside to say, but for that individual player and the best interest of that individual person, that might not be the case … If a guy’s ready, we put him out there. If he’s not, we won’t put him out there. And I think that’s the right way to approach it.”

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

                          13) Tom Brady has won six Super Bowls, Joe Montana won four, but to me, John Elway is the best QB I’ve ever seen. Just my opinion.

                          12) Raiders-Packers play an exhibition game Thursday night in Winnipeg, Manitoba; not really sure why, but it keeps the baseball infield in Oakland in slightly better shape. Wonder how the folks at Hard Knocks feel about trekking to Canada for a few days.

                          11) One thing about interleague play; it occasionally allows the schedule gurus to keep road teams in the same city for a week at a time. Indians have been in NYC for the last week; A’s were in Chicago for a week earlier this month. Makes life on the road a little easier.

                          10) Rays 7, Mariners 6— Tampa Bay scored twice in bottom of 9th inning.

                          9) Just when you thought the world couldn’t get stranger.
                          From the New York Post:

“Major League Baseball sent a memo on Monday warning about the “very real risk” of over-the-counter sexual enhancement pills, after at least two players have blamed them for positive PED tests so far this year.

The memo says the pills in question are “often contaminated with prohibited and unsafe ingredients” including anabolic steroids. It reminded players that anyone who tests positive for a banned substance is subject to discipline by the league — regardless of how it got into their system.”

                          Alrighty then.

                          8) Detroit 2, Houston 1- Astros (-$550) were biggest favorite in a major league game in at least 15 years. Veteran bookmaker Chris Andrews has been in the business 40+ years; he said they were the biggest favorite he could remember.

                          7) Baseball stuff:
                          — Astros put SS Carlos Correa (back) on the IL.
                          — Pirates put P Chris Archer (shoulder) on IL.
                          — Rockies put P Jon Gray (foot) on IL.

                          6) Freshman Bo Nix was named Auburn’s starting QB; he is the first true frosh QB to start the season opener for Auburn since 1946.

                          5) Every team in baseball could have taken Gio Urshela, Mike Yastrzemski or Aristides Aquino last winter in the Rule 5 Draft; all three are productive big leaguers right now.

                          4) Houston’s Yordan Alvarez (22) is the youngest player to walk four times in a game since Barry Bonds (21) in 1986.

                          3) 85-year-old talk show host Larry King filed for divorce this week from his 7th wife, Shawn King, after 22 years of marriage.

Forgot who said this, but I remember reading this a long time ago:
“Second marriages are a triumph of hope over experience.”

Trivia: None of Larry King’s first three marriages lasted longer than two years.

                          2) 11 of last 14 years, at least one Week 1 NFL underdog of +$200 or more has won SU:
                          Bengals +$375 at Seattle
                          Redskins +$325 at Philly
                          Giants +$285 at Dallas
                          Texans +$250 at New Orleans
                          Steelers +$220 at New England

                          1) XFL’s Seattle Dragons might have a small problem with their new logo, since it looks almost exactly the same as UAB’s Blazer logo.

                            Analysis

                            Winnipeg (7-2 SU, 6-3 ATS)
was able to double up the lowly BC Lions (1-8 SU, 2-7 ATS), 32-16. After failing to cover in each of the past three, the Blue Bombers were able to cover for the first time since Week 6. They’re a perfect 5-0 SU at home while covering in all but one of those contests. The under has hit in three of those five outings at home, including their Week 10 victory against BC.

For the Lions, they have really struggled both straight-up and against the number. They have allowed 32 or more points in each of the past five outings, with the over going 3-1 in the past four. BC has covered just twice in nine outings this season, and they haven’t covered in consecutive games. They’re 2-4 ATS in six road games this season, and 0-3 SU/ATS at home.

On Friday, Edmonton (6-3 SU, 4-5 ATS) was able to get back on track against struggling Toronto (1-7 SU, 3-5 ATS). The Eskimos posted the 41-26 victory, winning consecutive games straight-up for just the second time this season. Their over result was a rarity for the league’s No. 1 defense, as the under was 6-0 entering play.

For the struggling Argonauts, they’ve won just one of their eight outings overall, although they’re a respectable 3-3 ATS over the past six. They hang their hats on the fact the offense is finally starting to click a little bit, especially against some of the CFL’s upper-echelon teams. Toronto averaged just 12.5 points per game (PPG) in their first six outings, all losses, while averaging 27.0 PPG in the past two weeks against Winnipeg and Edmonton. As such, the over has cashed in consecutive games for the Argos for the first time this season.

Hamilton (7-2 SU, 6-3 ATS) was able to post the impressive 21-7 road victory at Ottawa (3-6 SU, 4-5 ATS) to keep a little distance between the top two and bottom two teams in the East. The Tabbies have won two in a row, and four of the past five, and they haven’t lost consecutive games straight-up this season. The ‘under’ has hit in four of the past five, too. The favorable schedule continues, as they travel to meet the lowly Lions next week.

Montreal (4-4 SU, 5-3 ATS) was angry after that ridiculous Week 9 weather-shortened loss. They took out their frustrations on Calgary (5-4 SU, 3-6 ATS), who have been very ordinary this season. The Alouettes snapped a two-game losing streak and non-cover straight. The Als have allowed 29 or more points in five of their eight contests overall. For the Stamps, they have managed 23 or more points in three straight, and eight of nine overall.

                            Team Betting Notes

-- Winnipeg and Edmonton kick off Week 11 on Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium. The Bombers enter 19-8 ATS in the past 27 against winning teams, 12-5 ATS in the past 17 overall and 7-3 ATS in the past 10 vs. West. They’re also 22-10 ATS in the past 32 road contest.

-- The Esks have posted just two victories in the past seven against winning teams. They’re 0-5 ATS in the past five following a cover while going 1-12 ATS in the past 13 in Week 11. They’re also 2-5 ATS in the past seven tries against the Bombers.

-- Ottawa enters the new week having over 28 of their past 39 on the road as they travel to Regina to battle the Roughriders. Ottawa is 4-1 ATS in the past five trips to Saskatchewan, while the over is 5-0 in the past five meetings in Regina, and 4-1 in the past five meetings overall.

-- The Riders have been hot against the number lately, going 5-2 ATS in the past seven at home, 5-2 ATS in the past seven against losing teams and 4-0 ATS in the past four overall. They’re also 4-0 ATSA in the past four following a bye. The under is 5-1-1 in the past seven at home for the Riders. However, the over is 4-0 in their past four after a bye, 5-0 in the past five meetings in Saskatchewan and 4-1 in the past five in this series overall.

-- Hamilton and BC hook up in Vancouver at Saturday night. The Lions limp in 2-10 ATS in the past 12 overall, 1-5 ATS in the past six against winning teams and 0-4 ATSA in the past four at home. However, they’re 4-1 ATS in the past five vs. HAM, while the over is 10-4 in the past 14 meetings overall in this series, and 9-1 in the past 10 battles in the Pacific Northwest.

-- We haven’t had a Sunday battle in a while, but Montreal and Toronto square off at high noon in Hogtown in Week 11. The Als are 10-2 ATS in the past 12 on the road, while going 10-3 ATS in the past 13 overall and 8-2 ATS in the past 10 vs. East. For Toronto, they have failed to cover eight in a row against the East while going 3-9 ATS in the past 12 overall. In this series, the Alouettes have covered 19 of the past 26 trips to Toronto, while cashing in five of the past seven. The under is 18-7-1 in the past 26 meetings in this series, and 7-2 in the past nine in Toronto.

-- The Alouettes look to rebound after a difficult loss against the Roughriders last week in that weather-shortened game. They face a tough trip to Calgary. Montreal is 9-2 ATS in the past 11 road games, while connecting in eight of their past 10 against winning teams.

-- The Stamps are 1-4 ATS in the past five against losing teams, and 1-5 ATS in the past six following a straight-up loss. However, they're 24-7-1 ATS in the past 32 games in the month of August. The under has been the way for both teams lately, going 10-4 in Montreal's past 14 road games, and 5-1 in the past six overall for Calgary. In this series, the under is 8-2 in the past 10 meetings, including 4-1 in the past five in Calgary. Montreal has covered eight of the past nine meetings with Calgary, too.

                              Week 10 Betting Recap

Winnipeg remains the team to beat in the West Division with last Thursday’s 32-16 victory against British Columbia as a heavy 10 ½-point home favorite. Edmonton was able to keep pace in that division race with a 41-26 road victory over Toronto as a 7 ½-point favorite on Friday night.

Saturday’s CFL doubleheader of action kicked things off with Hamilton knocking off Ottawa 21-7 as a 2 ½-point road favorite to maintain possession of first place in the East Division. The stunner of the week north of the border was Montreal’s wild 40-34 overtime victory over Calgary. The Alouettes closed as five-point road underdogs.

The Blue Bombers wrapped up the first half of their regular season schedule with their first cover against the spread in their last four games. The total stayed UNDER 52 ½ points against BC and it has stayed UNDER in three of their last five outings. Matt Nichols went a very efficient 10-for-12 throwing the ball for 179 yards and a score. Edmonton remains just one game off the pace in the West coming into this week’s showdown. Game Overview

Ottawa’s fast 2-0 start has faded fast with just one SU win in its last seven games. The loss to Hamilton was the first time the RedBlacks failed to cover in their last four games. The total has stayed UNDER the closing line in four of their last five contests. Game Overview

The Tiger-Cats’ lead in the East over Montreal remains at 3 ½ games at the halfway point of their season. Their lone loss within the division was to the Alouettes in early July. Two weeks ago, Hamilton beat BC 35-34 at home, but it could not cover as 9 ½-point favorites. The total went OVER 51 ½ points in that game, but it has stayed UNDER in four of its last five contests. Dane Evans continues to fill in for an injured Jeramiah Masoli at quarterback. Evans completed 24-of-39 passes for 299 yards and a score against Ottawa on Saturday. He also tossed a pair of interceptions.

The Lions’ current SU losing streak reached five games with Thursday’s loss and they have failed to cover the spread in five of their last six games. The total stayed UNDER 52 ½ points in that latest loss after going OVER in each of their previous three games. BC is allowing an average of 34.2 points per game which is the second most in the CFL. The offense is averaging 19.8 PPG during this current five-game slide. Mike Reilly went 16-for-28 throwing the ball for 177 yards and one interception against zero passing touchdowns.

-- BC has lost four of its last five games against Hamilton SU, but it still holds a 6-3 edge ATS in the last nine games of this inter-division tilt. The total has gone OVER in five of the last seven games between the two.

                              Game Overview

Montreal has been the biggest surprise in the first half of the regular season. Following a SU 0-2 start, it has now won four of its last six games SU and ATS. The total went well OVER 49 ½ points in Saturday’s upset and it has gone OVER in four of the Alouettes’ last six games. One of the big reasons for the team’s early success has been the play of Vernon Adams Jr. at quarterback. He threw for 389 yards and two scores against Calgary, but he was also picked off twice. He added another 38 yards and two touchdowns running the ball.

The Argonauts are going nowhere fast with just one SU win this season. The have closed as double-digit underdogs in five of their first eight games. Mcleod Bethel-Thompson continues to get the call at quarterback. He threw for 200 yards and two scores in Friday’s loss while running the ball five times for 38 yards. Toronto is averaging 16.1 PPG on offense while allowing an average of 35.3 points a game on the other side of the ball.
