Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……..

13) This week, Toronto rookie Bo Bichette became the first player since 1900 to hit a double in nine straight games, and he did it in his 11th career game. Not a bad start to his career.

12) Patriots 31, Lions 3— Total yardage in this game was 459-93, in a freakin’ preseason game. Neither starting QB played. I’m guessing the home fans weren’t too pleased with this showing.

This is where I remind you that Detroit fired coach Jim Caldwell after consecutive 9-7 seasons, so they could hire New England’s defensive coordinator, who then went 6-10 LY.

Last time the Lions won a playoff game was 1991. No bueno.

11) I still struggle with analyzing NFL exhibition games and figuring out how much they mean; the Ravens never lose them, the Falcons never win one. Outcomes of a lot of the games will be decided by guys who will be bartenders or driving UPS trucks in a few weeks.

Most coaches don’t game plan for exhibition games, but some do; Arizona Cardinals huddled in their game Thursday, but aren’t expected to huddle at all on September 8.

Avoiding injuries and determining who will win the final roster spots are really the most important part of these games.

10) Two years ago, Cleveland Browns went 4-0 in preseason, allowing a total of 29 points. There was a lot of optimism on Lake Erie. Then they went 0-16 in the regular season.

For most part, I would disregard scores of exhibition games; injuries to key people matter, like the Eagles losing their backup QB for six weeks Thursday.

9) Titans 27, Eagles 10— Eagles’ backup QB Nate Sudfeld broke his left (non-throwing) wrist Thursday night; the other two backup QB’s on Philly’s roster are suspects more than prospects, so they better keep oft-injured starter Carson Wentz healthy while Sudfeld’s wrist heals.

6) Someone bet $10,000 on the Vikings at CG Technology Friday, at 20-1 odds, which is a lot of faith in a team whose $28M a year QB has never won a playoff game.

5) Bill Walton is going to broadcast a White Sox game with Jason Benetti when the Pale Hose go to Anaheim next Friday. They’ve done college basketball games together, but there is lot more dead time in a baseball broadcast. This should be interesting.

4) In case you wondering, Bryce Harper has hit his 204 career home runs off of 159 different pitchers.

3) BYU basketball star Yoeli Childs will miss the first nine games this coming season because of a paperwork screw-up when he declared for the NBA draft last May, then decided to return to BYU after testing the draft waters.

2) This Antonio Brown thing isn’t going well…….according to Mike Silver:

“……..Brown, according to witnesses, typically glances at the screens of several tablets and his smart phone during meetings, distracting himself by engaging in activities which include perusing his bank accounts and “liking” photos on Instagram.”

1) Chargers’ backup QB Easton Stick has a great name; how many guys you know who are named after an aluminum bat? Stick was 49-3 playing QB at North Dakota State, where he took over for Carson Wentz. He looked good playing ball in Arizona Thursday night.

Game Overview

BC returns from a bye week with a SU three-game losing streak. It has failed to cover the closing spread in its last four contests. The total went OVER 51 ½ points in a 45-18 loss to Saskatchewan in Week 7 and it has gone OVER in five of the Lions’ first seven games.

Mike Reilly is third in the league in passing with 1,668 total yards on a completion rate of 66.5 percent. He has thrown six touchdowns and six interceptions in his first seven starts for BC.

The Tiger-Cats lost quarterback Jeramiah Masoli for the season in a Week 7 win against Winnipeg as two-point home underdogs. Dane Evans took his place in Thursday’s loss and completed 19-of-29 passes for 196 yards. He threw one touchdown pass to Anthony Coombs and he was picked off once. Evans was able to complete at least one pass to seven different players. He was the team’s leading rusher in that game with 35 yards on four attempts.

LIONS, TICATS SET TO CLOSE OUT WEEK 9 IN HAMILTON

HAMILTON — The best the East has to offer takes on a team in dire need of a victory in a Saturday night contest at Tim Hortons Field.

The BC Lions will be the visitors in a showdown against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Hamilton. It’s the first of two meetings within the next three weeks between these two sides.

The Lions are hoping for an improved offensive line this week thanks to the acquisition of lineman Justin Renfrow from the Calgary Stampeders in exchange for a player off the Lions’ negotiation list and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2020. The Lions have allowed a league-worst 25 sacks this season.

“A lot more goes into it than the front five that are blocking,” said Lions head coach DeVone Claybrooks. “It’s communication with the receivers, the running back; a lot of people have to be on the same page.

“We feel like we had to make some changes and we feel like the lineup we have going into this game will give us the opportunity to run the ball, be physical up front and the things that you want out of your front.”

Protection issues have certainly played a role in quarterback Mike Reilly’s numbers being as disappointing as they are. Despite having thrown for over 1,600 yards, he’s thrown six touchdowns and six interceptions. He’s hoping, along with everyone else, that their bye week will have allowed his team to reset and start anew.

“Feels like the guys are refreshed and ready to start over,” Reilly said. “(They) came in excited to work also understanding the task at hand and the difficult position we put ourselves in but excited about the opportunity to get back out on the field.”

Running back and returner Brandon Rutley will not dress, leaving the backfield to veteran John White. White has rushed for 329 yards and two touchdowns this season, but his 4.6 yards per carry in 2019 marks the second worst season in his career.

The Lions know their playoff hopes will dwindle should they continue to lose football games. A 1-6 record isn’t insurmountable — in fact, it equals the franchises’ mark through seven games in 2011 before going on to win the Grey Cup — but the rest of the West keeps winning following victories by Winnipeg, Edmonton and Saskatchewan earlier in the weekend.

While the visitors are relatively healthy coming off their bye week, the same cannot be said for the Ticats, who are searching for a fifth straight win at home and have yet lose at Tim Hortons Field this season.

Quarterback Dane Evans continues to fill in for Jeremiah Masoli, whose season is lost due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Evans will have help in the lineup this week as Brandon Banks, known as Speedy, returns to the field after missing the Week 8 loss to Saskatchewan. The 31-year old has three touchdown catches this season and 554 receiving yards.

“I’m feeling good,” Banks said. “Obviously I was banged up a couple weeks ago. But I’m feeling good, I’m fresh, I needed that week off.”

“Speedy’s one of the best players in this league,” Evans said. “Not too many guys go by one name. In any league when you go by one name you’re a big time player so you can’t overlook him.

Linebacker Simoni Lawrence will also make his return to the lineup after serving a two-game suspension for a dangerous hit on former Roughriders quarterback Zack Collaros at the beginning of the season.

Lawrence says he still hasn’t heard from Collaros despite reaching out, and admits it bothered him to be away from the field, but not just because he couldn’t play.

“I mean, yeah, just because of personal appearance, just how people really think I meant to do it,” Lawrence said. “But other than that, man, where I come from everything’s a dream still. My life is a dream so I can’t really ever complain to be real.

Joining Banks and Lawrence in the lineup will be defensive ends Adrian Tracy, Valentin Gnahoua, running back Cameron Marshall, defensive back Tevin Mitchell, and receivers David Ungerer III and Brian Jones. Mitchell will fill in for Delvin Breaux Sr., who’s been placed on the one-game injured list.

For the Lions, joining Renfrow in the lineup will be running back Wayne Moore, linebackers Adam Konar and Kevin Haynes, offensive lineman Sukh Chungh, and receiver Fernando Richarte.

BY THE NUMBERS

68 — The Lions were held to that number of net yards last week, their lowest in 35 years. It’s the lowest by any CFL team since 1995 when Winnipeg only had 65 yards in a game against Saskatchewan.

13 — Lions QB Mike Reilly has been sacked 13 times in the last three games.

Analysis

Calgary (5-3) suffered another setback in Week 9, dropping a 26-24 decision on the road against Winnipeg (6-2), although they were able to cover at 7 1/2-point underdogs. The Stamps have now covered in back-to-back games for the first time this season, going 2-0 ATS after a 1-5 ATS start. The 'over' result in Week 9 was a rarity, too, snapping a five-game under streak.

As far as the Blue Bombers are concerned, they were able to snap a two-game mini losing streak, including a loss to lowly Toronto (1-6) last time out. Despite the win, the Bombers are now 0-3 ATS across the past three games after a 5-0 ATS start. The 'over' connected for the second straight week, the first time that's happened for Winnipeg this season.

Friday night was a weird game in Montreal (3-4). Near the end of the third quarter the game between the home side Alouettes and Saskatchewan (5-3) was stopped due to lightning and heavy rain at McGill. The CFL has a rule that states if the game is more than halfway over and there is a weather delay longer than one hour, the game will be canceled. It's the first time in history that the rule has been put to the test, but the Roughriders were awarded the 17-10 victory after the hour, much to the dismay of CFL fans everywhere, at least those not wearing green. Speaking of green, none was exchanged on this game officially, as all wagers were graded 'no action'.

Ottawa (3-5) and Edmonton (5-3) were able to go the distance in a low-scoring battle at Commonwealth Stadium. The Eskimos have alternated wins and losses in each of their past seven outings, and they're just 1-3 ATS over the past four. Edmonton is a favorite of bettors at the window, however, as far as the total is concerned. The under has cashed in six straight outings after two consecutive overs to start the season.

For the RedBlacks, they have lost five of the past six games overall, but they have covered a season-high three in a row after kicking off the season 1-4 ATS. The under is 3-1 over their past four outings, too.

The BCLions (1-7) nearly pulled off the huge road upset in the CFL Hall of Fame Game at Tim Horton's in Hamilton. The Lions led throughout the game, nearly winning straight-up as 9 1/2-point underdogs (+320 ML). However, Hamilton (6-2) was able to rally for the 35-34 squeaker. The Tiger-Cats are 0-2 ATS over the past two after opening 5-1 ATS in the first six.

The Lions will get another crack at the Tabbies on Aug. 24 in Vancouver. The cover was the first for the Lions since June 29 in Calgary, snapping an 0-4 ATS skid. The 'over' is 3-0 in the past three for the Lions, and 6-2 in the past eight overall. BC has allowed 33 or more points in seven of their eight games this season.

Team Betting Notes

-- BC and Winnipeg battle on Thursday night, as the Lions try to finish off a huge upset this week. However, they're just 2-5 ATS in the past seven on the road, and 1-4 ATS in the past five against teams with a winning record while going 2-9 ATS in the past 11 overall.

-- The Bombers have covered 11 of the past 16 overall despite their Week 9 non-cover, and they're 6-1 ATS in the past seven at home. In this series, Winnipeg is 4-1-1 ATS in the past six at home vs. BC, while going 9-2-1 ATS in the past 12 meetings overall in this series. The over is also 8-2 in the past 10 meetings between the Lions and Bombers, including 5-2 in the past seven battles in Winnipeg.

-- Edmonton travels to Toronto looking to snap their alternating win-loss pattern. The Esks are just 1-6 ATS in the past seven games on the road, while going 1-4 ATS in their past five in the month of August.

-- Toronto is coming off a bye, and they're 6-1 ATS in their past seven following the off week. They're just 3-8 ATS in the past 11 games overall, however, and 1-5 ATS in the past six against teams with a winning overall mark. They're also 0-6 ATS in the past six following a cover in their previous outing. In this series, Toronto is 4-1 ATS in the past five meetings, while the over is 10-4 in the past 14 meetings and 5-2 in the past seven in Toronto.

-- Hamilton and Ottawa lock horns in the nation's capital. The Ti-Cats are 1-4 ATS in the past five games on the road, while going 2-5 ATS in the past seven against East Division teams. They're also 0-3-1 ATS in the past four in the month of August.

-- For the RedBlacks, they're 7-3 ATS in the past 10 against teams with a winning record, while going 5-1 ATS in the past six against East teams. Ottawa has also covered four straight meetings with Hamilton, while the over has cashed in seven of the past eight meetings in Canada's capital city.

-- The Alouettes look to rebound after a difficult loss against the Roughriders last week in that weather-shortened game. They face a tough trip to Calgary. Montreal is 9-2 ATS in the past 11 road games, while connecting in eight of their past 10 against winning teams.

-- The Stamps are 1-4 ATS in the past five against losing teams, and 1-5 ATS in the past six following a straight-up loss. However, they're 24-7-1 ATS in the past 32 games in the month of August. The under has been the way for both teams lately, going 10-4 in Montreal's past 14 road games, and 5-1 in the past six overall for Calgary. In this series, the under is 8-2 in the past 10 meetings, including 4-1 in the past five in Calgary. Montreal has covered eight of the past nine meetings with Calgary, too.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 10

Last week’s action in the CFL got underway on Thursday night with Winnipeg slipping past Calgary 26-24 as a 7 ½-point home favorite to remain at the top of the standings in the West Division title race.

Friday’s doubleheader of betting action started with Saskatchewan going on the road as a three-point favorite and knocking off Montreal 17-10. Later that night, Edmonton kept pace in the West by beating Ottawa 16-12, but the Eskimos could not cover the closing 9 ½-point spread. Hamilton closed out Week 9 on Saturday night with a 35-34 victory at home against British Columbia. The Tiger-Cats also failed to cover as 9 ½-point favorites.

Thursday, Aug. 15

British Columbia Lions (1-7 SU, 2-6 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (6-2 SU, 5-3 ATS)

Game Overview

BC covered against the spread for the first time in five games in Saturday’s loss and the total has gone OVER in six of the Lions’ first eight games. Mike Reilly completed 21 of his 28 passes against Hamilton for 306 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw a pair of interceptions. He is currently ranked second in the CFL in passing yards (1,974) and he has thrown eight touchdowns and eight interceptions. John White ran the ball 15 times for 124 yards in the losing effort.

The Bombers have failed to cover in their last three games closing as favorites in each contest. The total went OVER 49 ½ points in Thursday’s win and it has gone OVER in three of their last five games. Winnipeg is 3-1 ATS at home this season. Janarion Grant had a big game against Calgary with two punt returns for touchdowns. He amassed over 300 yards in returns to help pace that crucial win. Matt Nichols threw for 177 yards and Andrew Harris added another 100 yards on the ground averaging 5.3 yards a carry.

Betting Trends

-- Winnipeg is 4-1 both straight-up ATS in its last five home games against the Lions. It is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings overall with the total going OVER in eight of the last 10 matchups in this West Division clash.

Game Overview

After failing to cover against Ottawa, the Eskimos are 1-3 ATS in their last four games. The total stayed UNDER 49 points in Friday’s win and it has stayed UNDER in their last six games. Edmonton is 1-3 ATS in four previous road games this season. CJ Gable was the difference on Friday night with 116 yards rushing and a pair of scores on 18 rushing attempts. Trevor Harris completed 33-of-40 passing attempts for 327 yards, but he could not get Edmonton into the end zone through the air. He leads the CFL in total passing yards with 2,631 in eight games.

Toronto is coming off a bye after posting its first win of the season the week before against Winnipeg. The Argonauts stunned the Blue Bombers 28-27 as heavy 15-point home underdogs. They have covered in three of their last five games with the total staying UNDER in four of the seven games played. Toronto has closed as a double-digit underdog in five of its last six games. Mcleod Bethel-Thompson has taken the majority of the snaps at quarterback and he has tossed 10 touchdowns against nine interceptions.

Betting Trends

-- Edmonton won the first meeting this season 26-0 as an 11-point home favorite. This was its sixth SU win against Toronto in the last eight meetings. The total stayed UNDER 52 points in that game, but it has gone OVER in 10 of the last 14 games in this inter-division tilt.

Game Overview

Hamilton’s lead in the East Division title race is now three games in the win column with Montreal and Ottawa losing last week. It is a perfect 5-0 SU at home with a 1-2 record both SU and ATS on the road. The Tiger-Cats are 4-2 ATS this year when closing as favorites. Hamilton trailed BC 34-19 heading into the fourth quarter on Saturday night before mounting its comeback. Dane Evans passed for 260 yards and two scores. TORONTO — Week 10 begins in Winnipeg at 8:30 p.m. ET with the BC Lions in town. The Blue Bombers beat Calgary at home last week and will attempt to stay perfect at IG Field this season. On the other side, BC is looking to get back into the win column after last week’s heartbreaking loss in Hamilton. After being reacquired by the Lions earlier this week, Shawn Lemon is hoping to help turn the team’s fortunes.

Friday Night Football takes us to Toronto for a matchup with Edmonton at the annual CNE game with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Toronto is coming off a bye following Week 8’s thrilling victory which handed the Blue Bombers their first loss on the year. A second consecutive win would propel the Argos back into the playoff picture in the East. Edmonton is also in search of a second-straight victory after defeating Ottawa 16-12 last week. They’ll be led by C.J. Gable, whose Week 9 showing garnered him Shaw CFL Top Performer of the Week honours.

A Saturday doubleheader will wrap up Week 10. At 4 p.m. ET, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will visit the nation’s capital for the first of two clashes between the East Division rivals this season. Dane Evans will look to replicate his Week 9 success – a jaw-dropping, last-minute comeback win (his first as a starter) over BC. Ottawa will be playing only its third game against an East Division opponent (1-1) and is hoping to bounce back from last week’s narrow setback in Edmonton.

With a 5-3 record, Calgary currently sits knotted in a three-way tie for second in the West Division alongside Saskatchewan and Edmonton. There have been a total of 18 kick return TDs this year in just 35 games – four more will tie the all-time CFL record of 22 in an 81-game season set in 2004.

Of the 18 kick return majors, nine have come from kickoffs this season – a new CFL record.

BC has not been 1-7 since 2010. That year, the Lions went 7-3 in their final 10 games to make the playoffs. The last time they fell to 1-8 was in 1996.

Through nine weeks, the availability of No. 1 quarterbacks sits at 70%. Last season, they were available for 81% of games.

Winnipeg is undefeated at home this season with four victories. The last time they finished undefeated at home was in 1984, and they went on to win the Grey Cup. They also finished a perfect 8-0 at home in 1972.

Trevor Harris currently has the lowest interception percentage in CFL history (2 in 320 pass attempts).

To open up the week, we get a showdown between the first- and last-place teams in the standings.

Winnipeg and BC met up in the opening game of the 2019 season in BC, where Winnipeg took the contest by a 33-23 scoreline. Andrew Harris rumbled for 148 yards while Bryan Burnham had 156 receiving yards on five catches.

In the Lions’ last game against Hamilton, Burnham had 149 yards and two scores on seven catches. Mike Reilly also went 21 of 28 for 306 yards and two touchdowns.

Harris had his fourth 100-plus yard rushing performance of the season against Calgary in Week 9. The Bombers’ offence wasn’t as efficient as we’ve seen in the past, but Janarion Grant took a pair of punts back to the house to help them to victory.

BC knows that they could have a very different record if not for a few small mistakes. Avoiding 1-8 will be difficult, but if they play as they did against Hamilton, they’ll have a shot.

EDM at TOR

Another rematch will take place at BMO Field on Friday as the Edmonton Eskimos come to Toronto for a battle with the Argos.

In the last matchup between the two teams, the Edmonton defence flexed its muscles, shutting out the Argos and getting four sacks, three interceptions, and a forced fumble in the process.

The Esks were firing on offence during their Week 9 game against Ottawa. Trevor Harris threw for 327 while completing 33 of 40 passes. Additionally, C.J. Gable had two touchdowns and 116 rushing yards while Natey Adjei, Ricky Collins Jr., Greg Ellingson, and DaVaris Davis all had over 50 receiving yards.

Toronto is coming off a bye week, but they won their last game against Winnipeg in Week 8. They got James Wilder Jr. back on the practice field and also made a trade to start the week, acquiring defensive lineman Devon Coleman and a pick from BC for Shawn Lemon.

Edmonton is 1-3 on the road this season, and with a packed house expected in Toronto, the double blue will need the crowd to help make the visitors uncomfortable. But the Argos will be hard-pressed against one of the most well-rounded teams in the entire league.

HAM at OTT

Saturday will start with a game that has big implications on the East standings.

Hamilton is unquestionably the top team in the division. Following their win in Week 9, they’re currently sitting at 6-2. Dane Evans had his coming-0ut party against the Lions, tossing for 230 yards and two touchdowns on 23 of 32 passing. Brandon Banks returned to the lineup in Week 9 and continued to dominate with 137 yards and two scores on nine catches.

The REDBLACKS have dropped five of their last six games. They were only able to score 12 points, but they did get some solid performances from their offensive stars. Dominique Davis completed 65 percent of his passes for 289 yards, a touchdown, and two picks. John Crockett rushed for 89 yards while Dominique Rhymes had 119 receiving yards and a score on four receptions.

With a win and a Montreal loss, Ottawa can take over second in the East. That’ll be easier said than done, however, as Hamilton has proven how dangerous of a squad they are.

To wrap up the week, we get an inter-divisional clash between the Stampeders and Alouettes.

Despite losing their last game to Winnipeg, the Stamps have been one of the top offensive attacks in the entire league this season. Nick Arbuckle may have seen his last game under centre for a while in Week 9, as it’s looking more and more like Bo Levi Mitchell will be ready to roll against the Als. Running backs Don Jackson and Ka’Deem Carey also returned to practice on Tuesday, which should make the Calgary offence even scarier.

Montreal was also missing solid pieces in Week 9 when the played Saskatchewan. Both quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. and running back William Stanback both were out. Adams returned to practice on Tuesday, but the team also placed receiver B.J. Cunningham on the six-game injured list. The Als beat the Riders, however, the game was called early due to inclement weather conditions.

Beating two teams of the quality of Saskatchewan and Calgary in successive weeks would be a big feather in the cap of the Alouettes, especially with them tracking down Hamilton.

WINNIPEG — Andrew Harris set a major milestone in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ 32-16 victory over the BC Lions on Thursday night.

Harris finished with over 70 yards on the ground, which helped him set the all-time record for yards gained from scrimmage by a Canadian.

Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols went 10 of 12 for 179 yards and a touchdown, but he was forced to leave the game in the fourth quarter with an upper-body injury.

Mike Reilly went 16-for-26 for 177 yards in the loss. Receiver Duron Carter also had a 56-yard completion to Lemar Durant in the third quarter.

The Winnipeg defence got to Reilly seven times on the night and added an interception and three forced fumbles. Marcus Sayles also had a blocked punt touchdown on special teams.

BC would immediately concede great field position to the Bombers, as an attempt to keep the ball away from Janarion Grant off the opening kick-off would set up Winnipeg on their own 44. A 20-yard clipping penalty on Garry Peters and a pair of scampers by Harris totalling 14 yards got Matt Nichols into prime position. He’d take care of the rest, unleashing a strike to the back of the end zone to hit Nic Demski in stride. Justin Medlock would stick the extra point to give the hosts an early 7-0 lead.

Nichols would continue to fire, hitting Chris Matthews with a bomb over the middle for a gain of 51 yards. After a gain of three on a pass to Lucky Whitehead, the pivot would take a shot at Kenny Lawler in the end zone. However, the pass over the middle would catch the upright, forcing the kicking team onto the field. Medlock would calmly run out and hit a 25-yarder to push the Bomber lead to 10.

The Lions’ offensive line continued to struggle in the early goings of the game, as the Bombers were able to get the 30th sack of the campaign on Mike Reilly to force BC off the field on their second possession.

Winnipeg’s offence would keep testing the BC secondary to end the first frame. Nichols found Demski streaking down the left sideline at put the ball on him for a gain of 53. But on the final play of the first quarter, Nichols threw while being hit, and after Drew Wolitarsky juggled the ball, Maleki Harris would nab it in mid-air for the interception.

Reilly would start to find a groove to open the second quarter by getting the ball out early to his receivers on short routes. The offence would march 61 yards downfield, but Winnipeg stuffed John White on a short run to force a field goal, which Sergio Castillo would hit from 35 yards out to get the Leos on the board.

The BC defence would nab a second interception of the first half to keep the momentum going. Chris Streveler would be under centre to start the possession for the Bombers. He’d gain a first down on a pair of runs, but after being forced out of the pocket on his third play, Isaiah Guzylak-Messam tipped a pass and defensive lineman Junior Luke settled underneath the ball for the pick.

They’d convert turnovers into points again, as Castillo would put his second field goal of the night through the uprights from 50 yards out to cut the Winnipeg lead to 10-6.

Harris would gain 26 yards on a trio of carries near the end of the first half, but the Bombers’ offence was forced off the field again, leaving Medlock with a 45-yarder to get those three points back, but he’d hit the upright on the long kick. That ended Medlock’s previous streak of 11 straight field goals made.

Winnipeg would get the second sack of the evening on Reilly, forcing the Lions to kick deep in their own territory. They’d opt to concede the safety. That pushed the Winnipeg lead to 12-6 and gave the Bombers possession with around 20 seconds left in the half. They would kneel out the clock and take their six-point advantage into the locker rooms.

BC opened the second half with a spot of trickery. Duron Carter went in motion and rolled out to the flat to receive a pass from Reilly. He’d plant and air it out for Lemar Durant for a 56-yard catch and run that got the Lions down to the Winnipeg 19. White would gain 15 on a carry before punching it in from 4 yards out on the following play. Castillo’s extra point gave the Lions their first lead of the contest.

But that advantage would be short-lived, as Grant would return the ensuing kick-off 55 yards to set the Bombers up on the BC 25. After a quick two-and-out, Medlock would drill a 37-yard field goal to put the Bombers back on top.

Reilly would toss his first interception halfway through the third quarter after Willie Jefferson dropped into coverage to pick off a short pass.

The Bombers would immediately turn that defensive play into points a 20-yard completion to Lucky Whitehead and a 16-yard connection with Kenny Lawler would set up a rushing touchdown from 1-yard out by Nichols. It would be a nine-point game following the point after. On the drive, Harris became the all-time Canadian leader in scrimmage yards on a 1-yard carry, passing Ben Cahoon in the process.

Things would go from bad to worse for BC. Marcus Sayles would get a free lane to punter Josh Bartel, block the kick, and return it to the end zone. Medlock would hit another extra point to give the Bombers a double-digit lead to end the third.

Both kickers would exchange field goals — Medlock hit from 53 yards out before Castillo countered with a 47-yarder to make it 32-16. On the next play, Shawn Lemon would force a fumble and take Nichols to the ground. The Bombers’ pivot would get up and immediately signal backup Chris Streveler to start warming up. He’d headed to the locker room and did not return.

Winnipeg would get the ball back on the next play, as Reilly would put the ball on the turf and Kyrie Wilson would fall on it.

The Lions would get some extra chances to narrow the gap, but the Winnipeg defence would hold strong.

With the victory, the Bombers move to 7-2 on the campaign. They’ll head to Edmonton in Week 11 for a clash with the Eskimos on Aug 23. BC is headed home with a 1-8 record and a matchup against the East-leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats on tap on Aug 24.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

13) In the 50 years of divisional play in baseball, only three times has a team won its division with a road record that was 10+ games under .500. This year’s Cubs are 23-37 on the road; they’re first place in the NL Central.

12) I’m guessing that these NFL joint practices where teams meet up for a couple days and practice against each other are more helpful then just a normal team practice. Breaks up the monotony of training camp- practicing against new faces increases whatever intensity there is.

11) Marlins 13, Dodgers 7— If a baseball game was ever played in a library, it would’ve sounded like this; the 5,000 or so fans who were there didn’t make much noise, to the point where the Dodger TV guys were talking about how players/managers were more likely to be ejected on a day like this, because the umpires could hear every word they said.

10) Interesting discussion on ESPN the other night on how catchers now value pitch-framing more than blocking low pitches or throwing out baserunners trying to steal.

As long as there is no baserunner on third, catchers now often stay on one knee and focus on getting their pitchers called strikes. There has been an increase in wild pitches/passed balls in recent years, and this is the reason why, not because pitchers’ stuff is any nastier.

9) When you look at stats for AAA pitchers this year, important to keep in mind that they’re using the major league (juiced) baseball this year for the first time.

Last year, Lehigh Valley led the International League wth 145 homers; so far this year, eight of the 14 IL teams have hit more than 145 and the season still has a few weeks left.

8) Last nine baseball seasons, the first player to get to 30 home runs has been a different player every year. Jose Bautista reached 30 homers first in both 2010-11.

7) Baseball stuff:
— Reds scratched 1B Joey Votto (lower back).
— A’s signed P Matt Harvey to a minor league deal. I’m not sure having Harvey pitch in Las Vegas is an ideal situation, seeing how Harvey has had issues getting to the ballpark on time in his career.

6) Michigan’s basketball program offered a scholarship to rising Class of ’20 recruit Jace Howard, an unranked forward prospect from Miami. Chances are the Wolverines will get him, seeing how Jace Howard is the son of new Michigan coach Juwan Howard.

5) JT Realmuto caught only one game as a high school senior; he played shortstop mostly, but a wise scout projected him as a catcher and now Realmuto is a very wealthy catcher.

4) If you’ve ever seen the reality show “Chrisley Knows Best,” on USA Network, you probably won’t be seeing it anymore. Todd and Julie Chrisley were indicted on tax evasion and fraud charges, and are in custody in Georgia.

The 12-count indictment also alleges the Chrisleys committed bank fraud and wire fraud conspiracy, as well as other illegal stuff.

3) DeMarcus Cousins hurt his knee Monday while working out in Las Vegas; fears are that he tore his ACL. He signed a one-year, $3.5M contract with the Lakers in July, has earned $83M+ in salary in his career, but he hasn’t had much injury luck the last few years.

2) Former Oklahoma/Steelers QB Landry Jones became the first quarterback to sign a contract with the XFL, which begins play next February. Jones had recently worked out for the Detroit Lions after one of their backup QB’s got hurt.

The XFL’s first player draft is in October.

1) Great name for a racehorse: Tequila Sheila (25-1) ran in the 5th race at Gulfstream Thursday. Good name, slow horse; Tequila Sheila didn’t hit the board, or come close.
