      • Top 25 roundup: Iowa State shocks No. 3 Oklahoma in Norman
        October 7, 2017

NORMAN, Okla. -- Iowa State seemed to be in no position to win Saturday at No. 3 Oklahoma.

The Cyclones were playing with a walk-on senior quarterback who had played in just three games during his career going into Saturday after its starter at the spot took a leave of absence for the team due to "medical concerns."

But Kyle Kempt, with some help from ironman Joel Lanning, played a big part in pulling off the stunner as Iowa State beat the Sooners 38-31 at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

Kempt completed 18 of 24 passes for 343 yards and three touchdowns.

It was Iowa State's first win over Oklahoma since 1990, snapping an 18-game losing streak in the series. It was only the Cyclones' second win over the Sooners since 1961.

With 2:19 left, Kempt hit Allen Lazard for a 25-yard touchdown pass that Lazard wrestled away from Oklahoma safety Chanse Sylvie. That broke a 31-31 tie.

Oklahoma had one more chance to tie it, getting the ball with 2:19 remaining but failed to cross midfield. The Cyclones (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) sealed the win by forcing a turnover on downs when Baker Mayfield threw an incompletion on fourth down with 1:15 left.

Mayfield was 24 of 33 for 306 yards, two touchdown and no interceptions for Oklahoma (4-1, 1-1).

        No. 1 Alabama 27, Texas A&M 19

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Crimson Tide staked themselves to a three-touchdown lead in the third quarter and staved off an Aggies comeback attempt.

After the Aggies got within 12 points, Alabama defensive end Quinnen Williams and linebacker LaBryan Ray each sacked Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond for a combined 18 yards, squashing the Aggies' chance to build on their momentum.

The Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 SEC) sacked Mond four times in all and won the turnover battle 3-1 paving the way for the win. The Aggies are 4-2, 2-1.

        No. 2 Clemson 28, Wake Forest 14

CLEMSON -- Clemson (6-0, 4-0 ACC) won its ninth consecutive game against the Demon Deacons (4-2, 1-2).

Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant completed 21 of 29 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game with a knee injury with six minutes left in the third quarter. He did not return, but the injury did not appear to be serious.

Back-ups Zerrick Cooper and Hunter Johnson led the Tigers the rest of the way.

Wake Forest senior quarterback John Wolford missed the game with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder suffered during last week's 26-19 loss against Florida State. He was replaced by redshirt sophomore Kendall Hinton, who completed 14 of 30 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 92 yards on 24 carries.

        No. 4 Penn State 31, Northwestern 7

EVANSTON, Ill.-- Quarterback Trace McSorley completed 25 of 34 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown, also running for a score, as Penn State spoiled the Wildcats' homecoming.

Penn State Heisman Trophy candidate Saquon Barkley had minus-1 yard rushing at halftime. But he finished with 16 carries for 75 yards and two touchdowns, including a 53-yard touchdown run that gave the Nittany Lions (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) a 24-0 lead late in the third quarter.

Northwestern (2-3, 0-2) gained 99 yards in the second half, 23 of which came on a late touchdown drive.

        No. 5 Georgia 45, Vanderbilt 14

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Georgia amassed 423 yards on the ground, as the Bulldogs rolled past the Commodores.

Running backs Nick Chubb (16 carries, 138 yards, two touchdowns) and Sony Michel (12 carries, 150 yards, one score) were virtually unstoppable for the Bulldogs, who avenged a 17-16 upset loss to the Commodores in Athens last season.

Georgia (6-0, 3-0 SEC) averaged 7.8 yards per carry. Vanderbilt fell to 3-3 and 0-3.

        Michigan State 14, No. 7 Michigan 10

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Brian Lewerke ran for a touchdown and passed for another while the Michigan State defense forced five turnovers in the upset of the Wolverines at rain-soaked Michigan Stadium.

Linebacker Joe Bachie also had an interception and forced a fumble for the Spartans (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten).

Michigan quarterback John O'Korn, starting in place of injured Wilton Speight, threw three second-half interceptions. He completed 16 of 35 passes for 198 yards for the Wolverines (4-1, 1-1).

O'Korn's Hail Mary pass after the Wolverines reached the Spartans' 37 fell incomplete on the game's final play.

        No. 8 TCU 31, No. 23 West Virginia 24

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Kenny Hill had a touchdown passing, receiving and rushing to lead the Horned Frogs.

Hill threw a 45-yard TD to Jalen Reagor in the third quarter and took a pass from receiver KaVontae Turpin and ran 48 yards for another score for the Horned Frogs, who improved to 5-0 and 2-0 in the Big 12.

Mountaineers quarterback Will Grier, who entered ranked sixth nationally in touchdown passes, was 25 for 45 for 366 yards with three touchdowns and an interception, one of two West Virginia (3-2, 1-1) turnovers that TCU converted into 10 points.

Mountaineers running back Justin Crawford was kept just below his Big 12-leading 112.8 rushing yards a game with 111 on 19 carries.

        No. 9 Wisconsin 38, Nebraska 17

Freshman Jonathan Taylor rushed for 249 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, including the game-clinching score in the fourth quarter for the Badgers at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb.

Taylor bulled 2 yards up the middle, carrying a tackler just over the goal line's plane, with 9:08 remaining to give the Badgers (5-0, 2-0) a two-touchdown lead.

Nebraska (3-3, 2-1) tied the game at 17 with 10:43 left in the third quarter when Aaron Williams intercepted an Alex Hornibrook pass and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.

        No. 10 Ohio State 62, Maryland 14

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior quarterback J.T. Barrett passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Buckeyes rolled.

Maryland, down to third-team quarterback Max Bortenschlager because of injuries, generated only 66 total yards -- 50 rushing and 16 passing.

Then the Terrapins (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) lost Bortenschlager to an injury late in the third quarter when OSU (5-1, 3-0) cornerback Damon Arnette was booted for targeting.

True freshman running back J.K. Dobbins ran for 96 yards and a TD on 13 carries.

        No. 11 Washington State 33, Oregon 10

EUGENE, Ore. -- Washington State quarterback Luke Falk threw for 282 yards and three touchdowns to help the Cougars stay unbeaten.

Facing Oregon's third-string quarterback in true freshman Braxton Burmeister, the Cougars didn't allow the Ducks to score after the first quarter.

The Cougars (6-0, 2-0 Pac-12) allowed just 277 total yards, all while forcing three turnovers and limiting Oregon (4-2, 1-2) to 2-for-17 on third down.

        No. 12 Auburn 44, Mississippi 23

Kerryon Johnson rushed for a career-high 204 yards and scored three touchdowns to help Auburn roll.

Johnson has rushed for 11 touchdowns over the past three games and continues to pick up the slack with fellow junior backfield partner Kamryn Pettway dealing with an ankle injury. Johnson scored on runs of 17, 48 and 5 yards while leading the Tigers (5-1, 3-0 SEC) to their fourth consecutive victory.

Ole Miss (2-3, 0-2) lost its third straight game.

        No. 13 Miami 24, Florida State 20

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Miami quarterback Malik Rosier hit receiver Darrell Langham from 23 yards out with six seconds remaining as the Hurricanes rallied to snap a seven-game losing streak in the rivalry against the Seminoles.

The Hurricanes (4-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) twice picked up first downs on third-and-long to keep the drive alive, setting up the game-winner to Langham. It was Langham's only catch of the game.

Florida State (1-3, 1-2) took a 20-17 lead with 1:24 remaining in the game when Seminoles quarterback James Blackman hit wide open receiver Auden Tate in the end zone from 20 yards out.

        No. 14 USC 38, Oregon State 10

LOS ANGELES -- Quarterback Sam Darnold threw three touchdown passes as the Trojans bounced back from its loss to Washington State.

The Trojans (5-1, 3-1 Pac-12) overcame a sloppy start that included a muffed punt by Ajene Harris and a fumble on which the ball simply slipped out of Darnold's hand on a pass attempt.

Those two possessions placed Oregon State (1-5, 0-3) inside the USC 30-yard line but yielded zero points.

The Beavers were without leading rusher Ryan Nall due to an ankle injury.

Darnold finished 23 of 35 passing for 316 yards.

No. 16 Virginia Tech 23, Boston College 10

BOSTON -- Redshirt freshman quarterback Josh Jackson threw for 322 yards and a touchdown, leading the Hokies to an ACC win.

Jackson was 22 of 33 in his second 300-yard passing game of his rookie season. He was intercepted once as Virginia Tech (5-1, 1-1 ACC) rebounded from last week's home loss to No. 2 Clemson with the easy road win.

The Hokies built a 23-3 lead before the Eagles (2-4, 0-3) showed offensive spark late in the game.

No. 21 Notre Dame 33, North Carolina 10

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Deon McIntosh ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns for the Irish, whose defense controlled the Tar Heels' offense

Josh Adams added 118 yards and one long touchdown run for the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame (5-1) used backup quarterback Ian Book, a sophomore, in place of injured starter Brandon Wimbush, and it still had enough firepower to overwhelm the Tar Heels (1-5).

        LSU 17, No. 21 Florida 16

LSU quarterback Danny Etling threw a touchdown pass, and the Tigers defense made a late stand in a much-needed SEC victory over Florida on homecoming at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.

Etling, who was benched in the second half of last week's upset loss to Troy, threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tony Carter that extended LSU's lead to 17-3 early in the third quarter.

The Gators (3-2, 3-1) botched a potential tying extra point and trailed 17-16 heading into the fourth quarter. LSU is 4-2, 1-1.

        No. 25 Central Florida 51, Cincinnati 23

McKenzie Milton threw five touchdown passes, three to receiver Tre'Quan Smith, and Central Florida remained unbeaten with an American Athletic Conference victory shortened by weather at Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Smith finished with 165 yards on five receptions and also scored a rushing touchdown for the Knights, who improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1988, when UCF was still in Division II. The Knights are 2-0 in AAC play.

Milton completed 16 of 19 passes for 374 yards and didn't get a chance for more in the fourth quarter. Lightning and heavy rain moved into area, and the game was stopped with four seconds left in the third quarter. Cincinnati is 2-4, 0-2.

          CYCOLONES TAKE DOWN SOONERS

Oklahoma's winning streak is over, thanks to an Iowa State team playing without its starting quarterback.

Kyle Kempt passed for 343 yards and three touchdowns, including a 25-yarder to Allen Lazard that put the Cyclones ahead with 2:19 left, and Joel Lanning made plays on offense and defense to lead Iowa State to a stunning 38-31 victory over No. 3 Oklahoma.

The loss snapped Oklahoma's nation-leading 14-game winning streak and the Sooners' 18-game run against the Cyclones that dated to 1990. It was just Iowa State's second victory over Oklahoma since 1961.

Kempt, the senior who had thrown just two career passes previously, played because regular starter Jacob Park went on leave for undisclosed personal medical reasons late this week. The Cyclones remained confident, despite having lost 20 straight against ranked opponents. Iowa State's last win over a Top 25 team came against TCU in 2012. It was Iowa State's first road win over a top-five team.

          ---

          SPARTY BEATS MICHIGAN AGAIN

Mark Dantonio has done what seemed improbable a decade ago and in the previous century, figuring out a way to help Michigan State have its way with Michigan on a consistent basis.

Brian Lewerke ran for a touchdown and threw for a score in the first half and the Spartans held on to beat the seventh-ranked Wolverines 14-10 on Saturday night.

Michigan State has beaten Michigan eight times in a 10-year stretch for the first time in a series that dates to 1898.

The Wolverines had the ball late with a chance to drive for a go-ahead TD, but a heave from the Spartans 37 as time expired hit the turf near the goal line.

Michigan could not overcome many mistakes, including five turnovers and several costly penalties. John O'Korn , replacing injured starter Wilton Speight, threw three interceptions in the second half. Ty Isaac and Sean McKeon fumbled.

          ---

          LSU BOUNCEBACK

After the clock struck zero, LSU players sprinted toward an end zone and started doing the ''Gator Chomp.''

Given the team's tumultuous week, this was hardly taunting. It was a sigh of relief.

Danny Etling threw a short touchdown pass in the second half and LSU rebounded from a stunning home loss and beat No. 21 Florida 17-16.

LSU's 24-21 loss to Troy last week was the program's first at home against a non-conference opponent since 2000. The Tigers responded with tougher practices, two players-only meetings and another involving the athletic director, the head coach and both coordinators.

And finished the week with a much-needed victory.

          ---

          NUMBERS

6-Interceptions by Appalachian State in a 45-31 win over New Mexico State. Clifton Duck and Tae Hayes each had three each.

7-Overtimes in Western Michigan's a 71-68 victory over Buffalo, the fourth game in FBS history to go into seven overtimes. The Broncos set an FBS record for most points in a loss.

200-Career victories by Tulane coach Willie Fritz following a 62-28 rout of Tulsa.

11-Years of Cornell's losing streak to Harvard before beating the Crimson 17-14.

8,204-Career passing yards by Samford's Devlin Hodges to break the school record.

          ---

          GATORS SET SCORING MARK

No. 21 Florida has set an NCAA record by scoring in its 366th consecutive game.

The Gators got on the scoreboard with Eddy Pineiro's 25-yard field goal in the second quarter against LSU. That broke the previous mark set by Michigan (1984-2014) and tied by the Gators last week. The Wolverines played 365 games over 30 years without being shut out. Michigan's streak ended with a 31-0 loss at Notre Dame on Sept. 6, 2014.

Florida hasn't been shut out since a 16-0 home loss to Auburn on Oct. 29, 1988.

          LSU won the game 17-16.

            • 4th Quarter Covers - Week 6
              October 8, 2017

Glancing at the scoreboard won’t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are some of the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the sixth big college football weekend to open the month of October. Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows.

Iowa (-16) 45, Illinois 16: Iowa trailed until finding the end zone with seconds left before halftime and then well into the third quarter an 89-yard interception return put the Hawkeyes ahead 24-13. Illinois responded with a field goal to sit halfway to the closing spread heading into the fourth quarter down 24-16, though early in the week +18 was available on the Illini. Iowa took over in the final frame eventually netting three touchdowns to pull away for a misleading 45-16 final in a game where Illinois actually had a slight yardage edge but also turned it over four times.

Western Michigan (-7) 71, Buffalo 68: Games like this are why are the college overtime system is rightfully criticized as Buffalo and Western Michigan went through seven extra sessions to decide this MAC contest. Buffalo had an early 14-10 edge as a home underdog but Western Michigan led by 10 heading into the fourth quarter. The Bulls managed to score twice in the first several minutes of the fourth quarter to lead by four before Western Michigan answered with less than five minutes remaining. In the final minute Buffalo tied the game settling for a 34-yard field goal. Western Michigan was able to get a 52-yard field goal attempt off as time expired but the kick was blocked and overtime was needed.

There was drama in the first session as Buffalo kicked a short field goal but with a personal foul penalty on Western Michigan the Bulls took the points off the board and got seven on the next play. Touchdowns followed the next three possessions before Buffalo fumbled on the 2-yard-line starting session three. In position to win but not cover Western Michigan missed a 29-yard field goal. The spread result was still in play with the requirement to go for two after every score starting in the third overtime. In session four both teams got 8 points, in session five both teams ended up with 6. Exhausted defenses offered little resistance with quick scores in session six but neither team could hit the conversion. Opening session seven Buffalo had to settle for a field goal, certainly welcome result for those on the Bulls plus the points and in four plays Western Michigan rushed into the end zone to end the game with an outrageous 71-68 final score with 63 first downs and over 1,300 total yards to skew the statistics for both teams the rest of the season.

Syracuse (-3½) 27, Pittsburgh 24: Syracuse pulled away in the third quarter with a 20-13 edge heading into the final frame and they still sat past the slight favorite spread after the Panthers connected for a 56-yard field goal. Syracuse hit a big play to go up by 11 with 11 minutes to go but Pittsburgh responded with a touchdown and a key two-point conversion to make it just a three-point margin. The Orange eventually reached the Pittsburgh 5-yard-line in the final minute of the game but opted to go for it on 4th-and-short rather than kicking a spread-saving field goal. Pittsburgh didn’t advance much getting the ball with less than a minute remaining and 95-yards to go but the narrow underdog cover was earned with that fourth quarter two-point conversion.

Appalachian State (-13½) 45, New Mexico State 31: These Sun Belt foes were knotted at 17-17 through three quarters before a wild final frame. The two-touchdown underdog took a seven-point lead early in the fourth and after an exchange of touchdowns in just over a minute of game clock there was still a seven-point edge for the Aggies with just over nine minutes remaining. Turnovers keyed back-to-back short field touchdown drives for Appalachian State, taking a 38-31 lead with just over five minutes to go. New Mexico State reached the Appalachian State 26-yard line on its next drive but went for it on fourth down and came up short. Mostly trying to run out the clock the Mountaineers broke a 56-yard run for a touchdown to slip by the closing spread and created the sixth New Mexico State turnover of the game with an interception across midfield in the final two minutes.

Clemson (-21) 28, Wake Forest 14: Clemson was a bit sluggish after taking a 14-0 lead early in the game. The Tigers lost Kelly Bryant to an ankle injury but still eventually pulled ahead 28-0 early in the fourth quarter. With the game in hand the excellent Clemson defense relaxed a bit and Wake Forest produced two touchdown drives in the final nine minutes to steal the underdog cover.

Purdue (-3½) 31, Minnesota 17: The Boilermakers kicked a short field goal with about 10 minutes remaining to lead 16-14 before a weather delay of more than an hour. Minnesota put together a 17-play drive that included two fourth down conversions but ultimately settled for a field goal to lead 17-16 as a slight underdog with just over two minutes remaining. With the help of a great kickoff return Purdue only needed four plays to go back in front, getting a touchdown and a two-point conversion to lead by seven. Minnesota threatened to force overtime reaching the Purdue 27-yard line in the final minute but an interception was returned 76 yards to seal the Purdue victory and cover.

Navy (-10) 48, Air Force 45: Navy led 38-24 through three quarters but Air Force turned in an 89-yard touchdown drive to get back within seven and then held Navy to a field goal. Air Force delivered another quick touchdown drive to trail by just three with about four minutes remaining and then forced a 3-and-out. Air Force delivered a rare pass strike for a 51-yard touchdown and the lead with fewer than two minutes on the clock. Navy turned in a big 4th down conversion in its own territory and eventually completed a 75-yard touchdown drive with 15 seconds left on the clock to get the win though the underdog Falcons held the cover.

Northern Illinois (-23½) 24, Kent State 3: Five straight punts followed a Huskies field goal late in the third quarter with Northern Illinois just short of the favorite spread. With about nine minutes to go Marcus Childers was intercepted in the end zone to take away a scoring threat as well. The Flashes didn’t advance significantly and later in the fourth quarter failed going for it on downs just past midfield. With great field position the Huskies promptly fumbled and when they got the ball back they were able to run out the clock, ending the game at the Kent State 40-yard-line.

LSU (-2) 17, Florida 16: The line on this SEC crossover clash was a roller coaster all week and the timing wound up being critical. Florida opened at -6 of -6½ at many outlets before a steep fall to -2 by Friday night. Saturday morning the game opened back up at most spots with LSU -2 with that line fluctuating down to -1 at times. Off an embarrassing loss LSU took the early lead and led 17-3 early in the third quarter. The Gators climbed back into the game with back-to-back touchdown drives late in the third quarter but Eddy Pineiro missed the extra-point on the second score to leave LSU in front 17-16. Five straight punts filled the fourth quarter before Florida had to go for it on 4th down from its own 25-yard-line with a pass falling incomplete for a Tigers win but an inconclusive spread result.

Auburn (-21) 44, Mississippi 23: The Tigers were in command with a 35-3 halftime edge and the lead was still 31 points heading into the fourth quarter. The Rebels wound up with 429 yards and kept at it with an early fourth quarter touchdown. Down by 27 Mississippi scored a touchdown with about three minutes remaining to trail by 21 and opted to go for two, in a critical play for anyone involved on the pointspread that opened and closed right at -21 but reached -22½ during the week. Auburn’s defense held on the conversion as did the 21-point final margin for a closing line push.

Miami, FL (-2½) 24, Florida State 20: Offense was tough to come by in a big ACC clash as Florida State led 3-0 at halftime. Miami took advantage of a turnover for a short field touchdown and took a 10-3 edge into the fourth quarter despite a solid production deficit. The Seminoles delivered their first touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter and took the lead with a field goal with about seven minutes remaining. Miami answered with a 75-yard touchdown drive to lead by four, just past the slight road favorite spread.

James Blackman didn’t look like a freshman in leading a great late drive to put Florida State ahead with just over a minute remaining. Miami had the answer however eventually connecting for a 23-yard pass that was narrowly run into the end zone (surviving a lengthy replay review) with only six seconds remaining for the win, with the extra-point also sealing a narrow cover as well on a line that was -3 much of the week.

Virginia Tech (-14½) 23, Boston College 10: The numbers weren’t dramatically far apart in this game but the Hokies pulled away in the second quarter to lead by 14 at the half. Virginia Tech only managed three points each in the third and fourth quarters however. Boston College connected for a big play for a touchdown with just over five minutes remaining to get just inside the underdog spread.

Houston (-10) 35, SMU 22: This line climbed sharply to reach double-digits on Saturday and the halftime advantage was nine points for Houston right in the middle of those numbers with the game opening at just -5 for the Cougars. SMU closed to within two points in the third quarter but allowed a 52-yard touchdown a few plays later. The Mustangs stayed close after hitting a late third quarter field goal to trail by six heading into the fourth quarter. Houston delivered an early fourth quarter touchdown to lead by 13. SMU wound up with a big yardage edge but couldn’t cash in late with the final three drives ending on downs at the Houston 34-yard-line, intercepted at the Houston 1-yard-line, and intercepted at the Houston 6-yard-line as the cover eluded a deserving underdog.

Wisconsin (-12½) 38, Nebraska 17: The Badgers scored early on a long interception return but Nebraska proved up for the challenge through three quarters with the game tied until a 93-yard touchdown drive was completed by the Badgers with about 20 minutes remaining in the game. That put Wisconsin up seven but still short of covering the hefty road favorite spread. Wisconsin’s defense was stout the rest of the way and the running game took over leading to two fourth quarter touchdown drives for the Badgers to pull away.

Texas (-5) 40, Kansas State 34: Texas wound up with twice as many first downs as Kansas State but this was a tie game through three quarters and the Wildcats were in front by three with an early fourth quarter field goal. Texas missed a field goal after a 73-yard drive but forced a punt to get the ball back with four minutes to go. The Longhorns stalled in the red zone and kicked a field goal to tie the game with just fewer than two minutes remaining. Texas quickly got an interception and lined up what would have been a game-winning kick but the attempt missed from 45 yards and overtime was needed. After matching touchdowns in the first overtime Kansas State went backwards and missed a field goal in the second session, going backwards after a pair of costly holding calls. The missed kicks wound up paying off for some Longhorns backers with distrust in the kicking game Texas didn’t get conservative only needing three points and wound up in the end zone on a rush that likely could have been blown dead just outside the goal line. The pile pushed in for six points to get Texas a win by six, enough to cover early week and closing lines, although Saturday morning the line did reach -6½ and -7 before falling back down as some on Kansas State held on for the underdog cover.

Central Florida (-14½) 51, Cincinnati 23: The Knights continued a dominant start to the season, past the road favorite spread by halftime with a 37-16 advantage with that edge growing to a 28-point margin late in the third quarter before a weather delay. With the outcome in hand and a lengthy delay continuing the game was called, certainly making those with a ticket on the Knights or the ‘over’ more than a bit upset with a no-action result for an incomplete game.

Stanford (-3) 23, Utah 20: This Saturday Pac-12 contest was mostly a match of field goal kickers with the Cardinal up 16-13 through three quarters, right even with a closing spread of -3 though Sunday night and Monday Stanford was as high as a -6½-point favorite. Stanford was still -4 through Saturday night before emerging Sunday morning at -3½ and slipping to -3 mid-day, even briefly sliding to -2½ for a few moments before kickoff at a few outlets. Early in the fourth quarter Bryce Love added to his monster start to the season with a 68-yard touchdown run to put the Cardinal up by 10. In the final minute Utah completed a 95-yard touchdown drive that featured a 4th down conversion via penalty, scoring the underdog cover for many on the Utes.

Washington (-29) 38, California 7: The Huskies completely dominated the statistics in this late night game but with a 31-0 edge a fumble was returned for a touchdown to put the Bears on the board and within the hefty underdog number late in the third quarter. California went for the on-side kick and Washington was set-up in great field position and the Huskies converted a pair of third downs to find the end zone, getting back ahead of the spread. In the final seconds the Bears were a serious threat for the backdoor cover reaching the Washington 13-yard-line before back-to-back sacks with the game ending in a fumble.

                Top 25 Notes

-- Oklahoma was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten at home on Saturday, and no one predicted this one. The Sooners entered as a 31-point favorite against Iowa State, but left with a devastating and inexplicable home loss. The Sooners jumped out to a 14-0 lead, and they held a 24-13 lead at halftime, so things were semi-close in the first two quarters, but you figured OU would pull away. Instead, it was the Cyclones outscoring the Sooners 11-0 in the third quarter, and they rattled off 18 unanswered points before Oklahoma tied it 31-31 with 7:18 to go. The Cyclones didn't fold, though, connecting for a 25-yard touchdown pass with 2:19 to go to silence the home crowd and win. It was especially stunning considering the Cyclones were using their backup quarterback. It also snapped Oklahoma's 14-game winning streak, and an 18-game win streak against ISU dating back to 1990. Even more rare, it just the second win in Norman for Iowa State since 1961. It was also Iowa State's first win against a ranked foe in the past 21 tries dating back to the 2012 season.

-- Georgia continues to roll along, this time beating Vanderbilt by a 45-14 count. The Bulldogs improved to 6-0 SU and 5-1 ATS, and they have been even better since SEC play started. In their three wins against conference opponents they have outscored the opposition 117-17. The 45 points on Saturday actually helped the 'over' hit for the first time in six games for UGA this season.

-- Penn State struggled in the first half at Northwestern, leading just 10-0 at the break. Heisman hopeful Saquon Barkley had managed minus-1 rushing yards on eight carries in the first two quarters, but he rebounded for 75 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Penn State pulled away in the second half. The Nittany Lions have covered in back-to-back games for the first time this season, and they're 4-1-1 ATS overall. The 'under' was their third straight, and fifth in six outings.

-- Notre Dame was forced to use a backup quarterback in their road game at North Carolina, but it did not turn out to be a problem. The Irish were easily able to cover a 13 1/2-point number in Chapel Hill, winning 33-10. They have rattled off four consecutive covers, and they're a perfect 3-0 SU/ATS on the road this season.

-- Alabama passed a road test in front of the 12th man, topping Texas A&M 27-19. The Crimson Tide entered the game outscoring SEC foes 125-3 in the first two games, but the Aggies gave them all they could handle. Despite the two blowouts in league play, 'Bama is still just 2-3 ATS over the past five outings.

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- Duke slipped up at Virginia, 28-21. After starting out 4-0 SU/ATS, the Blue Devils have dropped two in a row and have failed to cover in either. The 'under' is a perfect 4-0 over the past four. ... Clemson seemed to have a little hangover in their game against Wake Forest 28-14. The Tigers are 1-2 ATS over the past three, while the 'under' has hit in each of the outings. ... North Carolina State is looking like a serious contender in the ACC, winning another big game against Louisville this past Thursday night. The Wolfpack have rattled off five straight wins and they have covered two of the past three after opening 0-3 ATS. The 'under' is also a perfect 3-0 for N.C. State over the past three contests.

-- Illinois turned to Jeff George Jr. under center, but the results were the same for the Illini. Iowa pounded the Illini by a 45-16 score, as the Hawkeyes improved to 3-1 ATS in four home outings. Illinois slipped to 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS, including 0-3 ATS over the past three outings. ... Ohio State was struggling on offense during the early going this season, but games against UNLV, Rutgers and Maryland have snapped them out of their funk. The Buckeyes are averaging 57.3 PPG over the past three outings with the 'over' a perfect 3-0.

-- Texas picked up a big confidence-boosting win over Kansas State in double-overtime, winning 40-34. After opening with a loss and non-cover, the Longhorns are an impressive 3-0-1 ATS over the past four outings. ... Texas Tech dumped Kansas 65-19, running their record to 4-1 SU/5-0 ATS. Oddly enough, the Red Raiders are normally known for 'over' results, but Saturday was just the second in five outings.

-- Southern California rebounded with a 38-10 victory against Pac-12 doormat Oregon State. Despite the four-touchdown win, the Trojans were still unable to cover for the fourth consecutive weekend. They're 1-5 ATS overall. The 'under' was their fourth in a row, however. ... Utah suffered its first setback of the season, as Stanford appears to be getting well. Despite the loss, the Utes are still 4-0-1 ATS through five games, and the 'under' is 4-1 in five outings.

-- Florida saw their late-game heroics run out against Louisiana State, as the Tigers rebounded from their embarrassing loss last week to Troy. The Tigers won 17-16 as 1 1/2-point favorites, so the Gators technically held out of a second straight cover after opening 0-3 ATS. ... Missouri picked up their first cover after opening 0-4 ATS, but the Tigers still slipped up 40-34 at Kentucky. The Wildcats are an impressive 5-1 SU, but just 2-4 ATS.

                Mid-Major Report

-- East Carolina continues to have trouble scoring, as Temple came into Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium and won 34-10. The Pirates are 1-5 SU/ATS this season, and 0-4 SU/ATS in four outings at home. The 'under' result snapped a 4-0 'over' run for ECU. ... Tulsa-Tulane was moved up a few hours due to the approach of Hurricane Nate to the New Orleans metropolitan area. The change in routine seemed to affect the Golden Hurricane, who fell behind 48-7 at half despite being only six-point underdogs. Tulsa's defense has struggled mightily this season, allowing 42 or more points in four of their six games this season. Tulsa is also 0-3 ATS over the past three outings.

-- Florida Atlantic routed Old Dominion 58-28, as Lane Kiffin's crew rushed for a school-record eight touchdowns. The Owls opened 1-3 SU/2-2 ATS, but they're a perfect 2-0 SU/ATS in Conference USA play. ... Southern Mississippi picked up a 31-29 road victory at Texas-San Antonio, improving to 3-2 SU/4-1 ATS. After three 'under' results to start, the 'over' is 2-0 in the past two for USM. ... Alabama-Birmingham moved to 3-2 SU/4-1 ATS with their win against Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs of LT have alternated wins and losses this season, so that might not bode well for USM in their next game Oct. 21.

-- Ohio fell at home to Central Michigan, as the under cashed for the fourth consecutive game for the Chippewas. The cover put the brakes on an 0-3 ATS slide. ... Bowling Green topped Miami-Ohio for a 37-29 win in Oxford, their first win in six outings. The Falcons opened 0-5 SU/ATS, but they need only to look across the field to know a bowl is still possible. Remember, Miami opened 0-6 SU last season before rattling off six wins in a row to become bowl eligible.

-- San Diego State ran all over UNLV by a 41-10 count. The Runnin' Rebels came out with quite a bit of emotion, and wore special helmets to honor the victims of the awful mass shooting this past week in Las Vegas. While emotions ran high early, talent took over late. No one could stop Rashaad Penny, as he tries to add to his resume for Heisman consideration. ... Hawaii hit the mainland, and hit a brick wall in Nevada. The Wolf Pack came away with a much-needed 35-21 victory, snapping an 0-5 SU/1-4 ATS run.

                Bad Beats

-- There was an ugly, ugly bad beat in the Minnesota-Purdue (45) game. The Gophers took a 17-16 lead with 2:26 to go, so it look like lights out for Boilermakers bettors. But Purdue struck right back with 1:17 to go, and they tacked on a two-point conversion. The 'under' is still safe, right? Nope. With just 10 seconds left in regulation, Ja'Whaun Bentley returned an interception 76 yards to the house for a crushing defeat to total bettors.

-- New Mexico State-Appalachian State (56) was a low-scoring game after three quarters, with the game tied 17-17. It appeared 22 points in the final quarter might be a bit much, but the sides combined for 42. 'Under' bettors were sad, but it was Aggies side bettors also suffering the bad beat. The game was tied 31-31, so if you're catching 13 1/2 you're feeling pretty good. However, App State scored two touchdowns in a 3:33 span to go up 45-31 and deal side bettors an ugly half-point loss.

-- In the San Diego State-UNLV (55) game, the Runnin' Rebels were driving with less than 30 second to go, trailing 41-10. The Rebs made it all the way down into the red zone, threatening to score a touchdown and push the total over. But the offense sputtered, and 'under' bettors hung on for the win.

-- Any over bettors in the LSU-Florida (42.5) game were feeling sick afterwards. The teams combined for 33 points through three quarters, needing just a field goal and a touchdown in some combination. The teams didn't score again. Ugly.

                • 'College GameDay' returning to JMU
                  October 8, 2017

                  (STATS) - Touchdown, JMU!

Reigning FCS national champion James Madison scored big during its open weekend when ESPN announced on Sunday its iconic "College GameDay" preview show will return to the Harrisonburg, Virginia, campus next Saturday for the Dukes' CAA Football game against Villanova.

The visit will mark the eighth time GameDay is spotlighting an FCS game, with James Madison also the most recent destination on Oct. 24, 2015, when the Dukes hosted Richmond. JMU estimated 12,000 people viewed the show from the school's Quad, and the broadcast drew a 1.4 TV rating (over 1.71 million).

"It was one of the most enthusiastic and largest crowds we have seen over the years. In my opinion, it was one of the greatest shows we ever put on," said GameDay analyst Lee Corso, who dressed up as James Madison, only to get his prediction of a Dukes' victory wrong as Richmond won 59-49 at Bridgeforth Stadium.

Saturday's show will air from 9 a.m. to noon ET.

While JMU will be the epicenter of the FCS next weekend, the game between the No. 1 Dukes (5-0) and No. 12 Villanova (4-2) is just one of a number of key conference matchups.

The last two teams the Dukes defeated in winning their second national title will be squaring off in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in Week 7 of the FCS season. Youngstown State, which lost in the national championship game, will host No. 2 North Dakota State, the five-time FCS champion (2011-15) which fell in the semifinals.

Two of the Big Sky's three teams in conference have big home games as Eastern Washington hosts Montana State and Weber State hosts Southern Utah. Also, Montana will host North Dakota.

Other key games include Kennesaw State at Liberty in the Big South, New Hampshire at Stony Brook in the CAA, Penn at Columbia in the Ivy League, Northern Iowa at South Dakota State in the MVFC, Duquesne at Robert Morris in the Northeast Conference, Campbell at Dayton in the Pioneer Football League, Wofford at The Citadel in the Southern Conference, Stephen F. Austin at Central Arkansas in the Southland and Prairie View A&M at Alcorn State in the SWAC.

Jacksonville State will seek to set a record with a 27th consecutive Ohio Valley Conference win when it hosts Eastern Kentucky.

                  • Washington State, Auburn in top 10
                    October 8, 2017

Penn State moved up to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football poll, and Washington State and Auburn jumped into the top 10 for the first time this season after six ranked teams lost this past weekend.

Alabama and Clemson still hold the top spots. The top-ranked Crimson Tide received 43 first-place votes in the poll released Sunday and the second-ranked Tigers had 18. The Nittany Lions have their best ranking since 2008, moving up one spot and taking advantage of the biggest upset of the season so far.

Oklahoma lost at home to Iowa State on Saturday, dropping the Sooners from No. 3 to 12. Michigan also lost for the first time and fell to No. 17.

Washington State is No. 8 and Auburn moved up to 10.

Behind Penn State, Georgia at No. 4 and Washington at No. 5 also moved up one spot after convincing victories. TCU moved up two spots to No. 6, and No. 7 Wisconsin and No. 9 Ohio State round out the top 10.

                    ---

                    POLL POINTS

                    EVERGREEN STATE SURGE

College football in the state of Washington has not been this strong in 20 years. With Washington State and Washington both undefeated, the Cougars and Huskies are in the top 10 together for the first time since Oct. 26, 1997.

Back then, Washington was No. 7 and Wazzu was No. 10, but they were headed in different directions. The Huskies stumbled down the stretch and ended up finishing the season 8-4 and ranked 18th. The Cougars, behind quarterback Ryan Leaf and coach Mike Price, won the then-Pac-10 title and played in the Rose Bowl. Washington State finished that season No. 9.

This year, the Huskies, coming off a College Football Playoff appearance under coach Chris Petersen, have been ranked in the top 10 since preseason. Coach Mike Leach's Cougars started this season ranked 24th and have steadily climbed since. They followed up a home victory against Southern California last week with a blowout victory at Oregon on Saturday night.

                    IN

All those ranked teams losing also created turnover in the bottom third of the rankings, with four teams moving in, including three for the first time this season.

                    - No. 21 Michigan State (4-1) is ranked for the first time since the late September 2016. The Spartans began last season ranked and coming off a Big Ten title, but their season spiraled and they ended up being one of the most disappointing teams in the country, finishing 3-9. After upsetting Michigan in the rain at the Big House on Saturday night, Michigan State is back.

                    - Stanford (4-2) returned to the rankings at No. 23 after handing Utah its first loss of the season.

                    - No. 24 Texas Tech (4-1) is ranked for the first time since Nov. 3, 2013, Kliff Kingsbury's first season as coach at his alma mater.

                    - Unbeaten Navy (5-0) is No. 25. The Midshipmen have made at least one appearance in the Top 25 each of the last three seasons. That hasn't happened since the 1950s.

                    OUT

                    - Louisville fell out of the rankings for the first time this season after losing to North Carolina State on Thursday.

                    - Utah is out after losing at home.

                    - Florida and West Virginia fell out of the rankings after each took a second loss.

                    UP

                    - Notre Dame jumped five spots to No. 16, thanks as much to the movement around the Irish as to what they did Saturday. Notre Dame won at North Carolina to improve to 5-1, but their victory at Michigan State looks a lot more impressive now. Plus, the Irish have been the only team to stay within single-digits of Georgia. The Bulldogs beat Notre Dame 20-19 in South Bend, Indiana, in week two.

                    - North Carolina State moved up four spots to No. 20, giving the Wolfpack their best ranking since 2003, when they reached No. 14 but finished the season unranked.

                    - Miami moved up two spots to No. 11 after breaking a seven-game losing streak to Florida State.

                    DOWN

                    - Michigan's 10-spot drop was the largest this week.

                    - Oklahoma fell nine spots and now holds the distinction of having a victory against a top-10 team (Ohio State) )and a loss to an unranked team.

                    RANKED vs. RANKED

None. The last time a weekend of college football this late in the season included no games matching ranked teams was Nov. 21, 2009. It's happened twice in September since then - last year and in 2012.

                    CONFERENCE CALL

The SEC is down to three teams in the Top 25, the fewest of any Power Five conference and the fewest for the league since Dec. 6, 2009.

                            • Oregon State and coach Gary Andersen agree to part ways
                              October 9, 2017

Oregon State and coach Gary Andersen have mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately, with the Beavers off to a 1-5 start.

The school announced the split in a news release Monday, two days after a 38-10 loss at Southern California. Oregon State did not have a victory against an FBS team this season.

''This was something that evolved between the both of us,'' athletic director Scott Barnes said.

He said the conversation with Andersen got to a point Sunday ''where we made a final decision.''

Cornerbacks coach Cory Hall was named interim coach. The Beavers face Colorado at home on Saturday.

''I'm going to give it my best, because in the end that's what the kids deserve,'' Hall said.

Oregon State says Andersen, 53, and the school ''agreed to release each other from all future contract obligations and payments.'' Andersen's contract had been extended after last season and ran through the 2021 season. He was due to make $2.65 million this season and had he been fired without cause he would have been due about $12 million.

''After many discussions with Scott, waiving my contract is the correct decision and enables the young men and the program to move forward and concentrate on the rest of this season,'' Andersen said in a statement. ''Coaching is not about the mighty dollar. It is about teaching and putting young men in a position to succeed on and off the field. Success comes when all parties involved are moving in the same direction.''

Barnes said the fact that Andersen waived his contract was testament to his character.

''That's just who Gary is. That's a statement of who the man is and his integrity and the honor with which he conducts his business,'' Barnes said. ''At the end of the day, he felt that was an important piece to this, and obviously it creates a clear path.''

Barnes said that there were no issues with health or anything that would warrant firing Andersen for cause.

Andersen was in his third season with the Beavers and the team appeared to be sliding backward this season after showing some progress in winning four games last year, including a victory against rival Oregon that snapped an eight-game losing streak in the Civil War series for the Beavers.

Players reacted on social media, among them freshman receiver Isaiah Hodgins, who tweeted: ''This one hurts.''

During his tenure Andersen struggled to find a starting quarterback in the face of numerous injuries.

Darell Garretson started at the beginning of last season but he was knocked out by a broken ankle. Backup Conor Blount injured his knee, essentially thrusting Marcus McMaryion into the starting role for the Beavers' final six games.

The Beavers brought in community college transfer Jake Luton this season and he started before he sustained a thoracic spine fracture in a loss to Washington State.

Andersen finished 7-23 at Oregon State.

''No better leader of young men... gave me the opportunity nobody else in the country would! Forever grateful for him!'' Blount posted to Twitter.

Andersen came to Oregon State under unusual circumstances after he abruptly resigned as Wisconsin coach in December 2014 after two seasons in Madison. He went 19-7 with the Badgers, but parted ways with the program after becoming frustrated with some of Wisconsin's academic admissions policies and standards.

The Utah native previously spent four seasons at Utah State, working with Barnes as AD, and led the Aggies to an 11-2 season in 2012. He was also a longtime assistant at the University of Utah.

The players were told late Monday morning.

''Like any change, and I won't diminish this, it's an emotional time for our student-athletes, it just is. Particularly the surprise that it was. They all gave him a big bear hug,'' Barnes said. ''What's so important for us now, not only as a football staff but as an athletic program, is to put our arms around those student-athletes and get them redirected. We have a pretty short window before we've got to get them back on the field. We want to make sure their minds are right, and will do whatever we need to do to make sure they're in good position.''

Barnes said the school would immediately begin the search for a new head coach.

                              • Opening Line Report - Week 7
                                October 9, 2017

Michigan and Oklahoma were knocked from their undefeated perches last week, and both saw early betting action go against them for their upcoming conference tilts.

In our Week 7 opening line report, we cover a trio of Saturday’s games, including the ones involving the Wolverines and Sooners, in addition to a showdown in the SEC West.

Michigan (-6.5) at Indiana, 12 p.m. ET, ABC

Michigan, off its 14-10 loss at home to Michigan State, opened -7.5 at Indiana, before early underdog action from sharp players pushed the spread down to -5.5 by Monday morning. Since then, there’s been buyback on Michigan, with the line settling at -6.5 at most shops Monday evening.

The Hoosiers haven’t beaten the Wolverines since 1987, but they’ve covered the spread in four of the last six meetings.

Situational handicappers may be perplexed by the spot Michigan finds itself this week. Is this a bounce-back scenario since they just loss to the Spartans, or a look-ahead spot with Penn State coming up next?

“I’m not sure they’re looking ahead to anybody after the game they just had last Saturday,” said Chris Andrews, sports book director at the South Point.

Andrews, however, is dubious on Michigan, as many of the Ann Arbor faithful also seem to be this week.

“Michigan’s a mystery still,” Andrews said. “We’re halfway through the season, and their offense isn’t that good, and they had one returning starter on defense, so there were a lot of question marks on the defensive side of the ball.”

College football pundits and gamblers alike may have been too soon to anoint Jim Harbaugh.

“Harbaugh was in the conversation with Urban Meyer and Nick Saban as one of the great college coaches, but he doesn’t have that great a resume at Michigan,” Andrews said. “He had a great resume at Stanford, he had a great resume at the 49ers, but Michigan is a little bit spotty still. Guys have given him the benefit of the doubt. Now all of a sudden they’re not giving him the benefit of the doubt."

That sentimental shift may provide an opportunity for bettors.

“If you believe in the buy low/sell high theory, you might get a chance to buy low right now on Michigan,” Andrews said.

But Andrews isn’t surprised by the early money on the dog.

“Indiana’s been a wiseguy side in a lot of games this year, and they were a little bit last year, too,” he said. “So I know the wiseguys have a strong opinion on Indiana.”

Oklahoma (-8) vs. Texas, 3:30 p.m ET, ESPN

Oklahoma opened -8 at the Wynn on Sunday, the line inching down to -7.5 on Monday.

Texas has covered four straight in this series, but Saturday’s spread is more manageable for the favored Sooners, who have been asked to lay between 11.5 and 16.5 points vs. the Longhorns in each of those four meetings.

It’s typically not easy for a national championship contender to recover from its first loss of the season, but Andrews expects a big effort from Oklahoma this weekend.

“They did not look good last week (in the 38-31 loss to Iowa State), particularly on defense,” Andrews said. “They missed so many tackles. I had Iowa State earmarked as a big improver this year, but they beat ‘em. It was no fluke, Iowa State beat ‘em. But I think Oklahoma responds this week.”

With Tom Herman taking over, Texas was a sexy pick ahead of the season, but the Longhorns are a middling 3-2 with a motivated Oklahoma squad up next.

“At the beginning of the year, I thought Texas was bet-against team, I thought they were a little overrated,” Andrews said. “You had Tom Herman coming in, and he’s another guy they were ready to put in the Hall of Fame with a very small resume. .. A lot of guys got ahead of themselves on Texas.”

Auburn (-6.5) at LSU, 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS

Underdog bettors pounced on the opening line of LSU +8, betting it down past the key number 7 to 6.5. The spread got bounced between 6.5 and 7 from there.

While LSU got a much-needed win against Florida on Saturday, albeit in unimpressive fashion, Auburn continues to roll along, somewhat under the radar, its only loss coming to No. 2 Clemson, 14-6.

“I’ve been pro-Auburn this year. They had the early loss to Clemson, and a lot of guys had pretty much written them off after that, and I remember telling people , ‘I don’t think that’s such a terrible loss,’” Andrews said.

How could it have been construed as such? Clemson has followed its national championship season by getting off to a 6-0 start this season, including wins at Louisville and at Virginia Tech, in addition to Auburn.

“Their offense the last couple of years has not been that good, but they have played some great defense, even against Clemson,” Andrews continued, “They kind of got shuffled back after that (loss to Clemson), but they’re slowly getting back into the national picture, and they’re deserving of being in the national picture.”

As for LSU’s dull 17-16 win over Florida?

“I was just not that impressed with LSU,” Andrews said. “I give them credit for coming off the mat after that loss at home to Troy, but I just didn’t find them all that compelling, all that efficient. They were awfully lucky to win.” Andrews added of this week’s matchup, “You can’t bet momentum in the pros, but you can bet momentum in college, and you’ve got the momentum behind Auburn right now. They’re playing some pretty good football."
