Game Overview

Edmonton needs to stop the bleeding in this SU four-game losing streak after winning its first seven contests SU. One of the biggest reasons why the Eskimos have lost their last four is a defense that has been burnt for an average of 37.8 points per game. The last two losses were to Calgary, but this unit gave up 54 points in a loss to Saskatchewan and 33 points in a loss to Winnipeg during this current slide.

The East Division is so weak this season that Toronto remains just a half game out of the lead despite a 1-5 run both SU and ATS in its last six games. Last week’s bye was a welcome relief on the heels of a stunning 24-22 loss to Hamilton as a three-point road favorite. The Argonauts still have Ricky Ray at quarterback as the third-leading passer in the league with 3,343 yards, but their top rusher Brandon Whitaker has just 318 total yards on the ground.

Game Overview

It looks like Jonathon Jennings will return to the starting lineup as the Lions’ signal caller after Travis Lulay was apparently lost for the rest of the season with a knee injury in last week’s win against Montreal. Jennings completed 22-of-29 attempts for 295 yards and two touchdowns against the Alouettes. He has now thrown for 1,720 yards and six touchdowns on the year.

Calgary looks like it is just warming up for another run deep into the postseason. The Eskimos put up much more of a battle this time around after the Stampeders rolled to a 39-18 as 10-point home favorites in the first game in this home-and-home tilt. Bo Levi Mitchell at quarterback and Jerome Messam anchoring the running game are the team’s two biggest stars, but Calgary’s shutdown defense is the reason for the current SU seven-game winning streak (5-1-1 ATS).

Betting Trends

-- Calgary got past BC 21-17 on Aug. 18 as a four-point road favorite to extend its SU winning streak over the Lions to four games. The total stayed UNDER 56 points in that game and it has stayed UNDER in five of the last seven meetings.

WILDER JR.’S BIG PERFORMANCE LEADS WAY IN WIN AGAINST ESKS

TORONTO — The Toronto Argonauts snapped a two-game losing streak in impressive fashion on Saturday, racking up 457 yards in total offence in a 34-26 victory against the Edmonton Eskimos at BMO Field.

Argonauts running back James Wilder Jr. had a career day, leading his team in both rushing and receiving while accumulating 257 total yards and a touchdown. Wilder finished the game with 67 yards receiving and 190 yards on the ground, becoming the first Argonaut running back to rush for more than 150 yards in a game since 2010.

Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly also had a big performance on the day, throwing for 323 yards and two touchdowns in an offensive shootout that went down to the final minutes.

It did not take long for the game’s first big play to strike, as Eskimos defensive lineman Euclid Cummings stripped the ball from Toronto’s Ricky Ray on just the second play from scrimmage. The fumble was quickly recovered by Eskimos defensive tackle Almondo Sewell, and the Green and Gold took over with excellent field position inside Toronto’s 30-yard line.

The Edmonton offence capitalized on the ensuing drive, with running back Travon Van finding the end zone on a 12-yard run up the middle. Dynamic receiver Derel Walker set up the score with a 13-yard catch and run. The touchdown run was Van’s first offensive touch since returning from injury.

Ray and the Argos’ offence began to rebound from their early turnover on the next drive, with Wilder gaining a hard-earned first down after catching a short pass out of the backfield. Wilder continued to show his versatility a couple plays later, lunging for another first down after taking a reception for 10 yards. The following play appeared to go for a touchdown after Argonauts fullback Declan Cross took a quick screen pass for a 52-yard score, but the play was called back due to a holding penalty.

The Argonauts continued to create momentum after the penalty, as receiver S.J. Green began to get involved on offence. Green’s 6-yard catch set up the Argos’ offence inside Edmonton’s 20-yard line, and Green drew a crucial pass interference call a couple plays later while attempting to get open in the end zone.

Toronto did not waste time capitalizing on the field position, and they fooled the Eskimos’ defence by loading up the backfield and running a play-action pass to the right with backup quarterback Cody Fajardo. The Argonauts quarterback rolled out to the right and found Green for the two-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 7 points apiece. The scoring play was Fajardo’s first touchdown toss of the season and Green’s sixth touchdown of the season.

Wilder continued to play a big role after Toronto’s defence forced a quick punt. The 6-foot-2, 232-pound running back put together back to back 11-yard runs as time expired in the opening quarter. The bruising runner then caught back to back passes for 16 and 11 yards, setting up Toronto’s offence with excellent field position.

Ray threw a beautiful pass on the next play, dropping the ball in perfectly past two Edmonton defenders for a three-yard touchdown to receiver Armanti Edwards. The touchdown was Edwards’ third as a member of the Argos, and the 314th touchdown pass in Ray’s CFL career.

Edmonton answered back quickly on their next offensive series, with Reilly leading his unit down the field on a four-play 77-yard scoring drive. Reilly connected with multiple receivers on the drive, finding receivers Adarius Bowman and Derel Walker for big chunks of yardage before hitting Brandon Zylstra for a huge 46-yard touchdown deep down the right sideline.

Wilder and the Argos’ rushing attack continued to dominate after the Edmonton score, putting Toronto back on top 21-14 after an electrifying 76-yard touchdown run. Wilder went virtually untouched as he sped down the middle of the field towards daylight for his first career CFL touchdown. Wilder racked up an incredible 167 total yards in the first half alone.

Argonauts kicker Lirim Hajrullahu added a 27-yard field goal on the next possession to extend the lead to 24-14.

The big plays kept coming for the Argonauts after that, with Ray and Edwards connecting for one of the most impressive plays of the afternoon. Ray threw a deep pass from inside his own end zone, and Edwards jumped up and adjusted beautifully to reel in the 34-yard reception while somehow staying in bounds down the left sideline.

The Eskimos’ offence came out firing in the second half, putting together a mix of run and pass plays while making their way down the field. But Edmonton’s drive fell short after a kicker Hugh O’Neill missed a 41-yard field goal, sending the ball out of bounds for a single to bring the score to 24-15.

It was the next Edmonton field goal attempt that resulted in the biggest play of the game, however. O’Neill missed a field goal to the left, and the ball ended up in the waiting hands of Argonauts running back Martese Jackson. Jackson then put on a show for the home fans, taking the ball all the way from one end zone to the other for a 125-yard return touchdown, helping put Toronto up 31-15. The highlight-reel play was Toronto’s first missed field goal returned for a touchdown since Chad Owens accomplished the feat in 2013.

Toronto’s formidable rushing attack kept rolling as the fourth quarter of action got underway. Wilder continued to look unstoppable, putting together rushes of 46 and 22 yards on back to back plays. The Argonauts extended their lead as a result, with Hajrullahu knocking through a 26-yard field goal to bring the score to 34-15.

Reilly and the Eskimos’ offence began to get things going down the stretch, as the quarterback connected with Walker for a pivotal 37-yard completion. Walker added another catch for 18 yards before Reilly found Van for the eight-yard touchdown pass. Reilly connected with Walker again for the successful two-point convert, bringing the score to 34-23.

Edmonton appeared to gain even more ground on the Toronto lead when receiver Duke Williams secured a remarkable catch in the end zone with under five minutes left to play. But upon further review, it was ruled that Williams committed offensive pass interference. The penalty ended up being significant, as the Eskimos were forced to settle for a 21-yard field goal to bring the score to 34-26.

The final comeback attempt for Edmonton began with a spark after Reilly threw a deep bomb to receiver Bryant Mitchell for 60 yards, putting the Eskimos’ offence in scoring position with just under two minutes remaining.

But in a game filled with offensive highlights, it was the Argos’ defence that stepped up in crunch time. As Reilly attempted to find an open target in the end zone, Argonauts defensive back Matt Black blitzed up the middle and dropped the Edmonton quarterback for a loss of six yards.

The Argonauts will host the CFL East rival Montreal Alouettes next Saturday, while the Eskimos will take a week off before trying to snap their five-game losing streak on Sept. 30 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

EIGHT STRAIGHT: STAMPS CONTINUE WIN STREAK WITH 27-13 VICTORY OVER LIONS

CALGARY — Make it eight in a row for the Calgary Stampeders.

In a game dominated by defence, the Stamps picked up a 27-13 victory at McMahon Stadium to extend their impressive win steak and put more distance between themselves and their divisional opponents at the top of the West.

The victory was Calgary’s 15th straight win against teams in their own division.

Alex Singleton racked up 11 tackles in the win. It was the third straight game that the linebacker has recorded double digit tackles.

The Stamps appeared to have an early pick six when Ciante Evans intercepted a pass from Jonathon Jennings near midfield and ran it back to house. However, Evans was ruled down by contact after the play was reviewed and Calgary began their drive at their own 49-yard-line. The Stamps were unable to capitalize on the turnover, going two and out on the next play.

Calgary would be the first to get on the board when Bo Levi Mitchell connected with Marken Michel in the right corner of the end zone for a 31-yard major. The extra point was good to give the Stamps a 7-0 lead.

The Lions notched a single to prevent a scoreless first quarter.

Calgary’s defence wreaked havoc on Jennings through the first 15 minutes by racking up three quarterback sacks, including a pair of takedowns on back-to-back plays.

The Stamps extended their lead when Roy Finch ran the ball back 47 yards on a punt return to begin the Stamps drive in BC territory. Rene Paredes split the uprights from 27 yards out to cap off the drive and pull the Stamps ahead 10-1.

The Lions responded with a field goal of their own to chip away into Stamps’ lead.

Paredes notched his second field goal of the game with less than a minute on the clock to put Calgary ahead 13-4 lead heading into halftime.

It was a scary moment for Stamps fans when running back Jerome Messam made helmet-to-helmet contact with a Lions defender while being tackled. Messam appeared to be in immediate pain and laid on the field for a short time, but was able to walk to the sidelines without any help. He was taken to the dressing room and ruled as doubtful to return.

The Lions would continue to hang around with another field goal courtesy of Ty Long to once again make it a one score game.

Jennings was picked off for the second time in the game when Jameer Thurman anticipated the pass and caught it clean to give Calgary possession of the ball at the Lions’ 24-yard line. The Stamps continued their drive into the fourth quarter. The Lions defence would come up strong, keeping the Stamps out of the end zone. Paredes made the short 17-yard punt through the uprights to make it a 17-7 game.

Jennings led a steady charge down the field on the ensuing drive, connecting with Bryan Burnham for two double digit gains. Long finished the drive with a 36-yard field goal to put a dent in Calgary’s lead.

The Stamps picked up a huge first down when Rob Maver was pressured while trying to punt the ball away on third and long and was forced to run for the first down. He rushed for 24-yards to keep the ball in Calgary’s hands. The Stamps were once again forced to settle for a field goal to make it a 10-point game.

The Stampeders would finally find the end zone before the end of the quarter to put the nail in the coffin. It started with Finch’s 66-yard punt return to put Calgary in the red zone. Just two plays later, Mitchell made a short toss to Reggie Begelton, who picked up 20 yards after the catch and charged across the plane for the Stamps’ second major of the game.

Long made his fourth field goal of the day as the clock dwindled down. The Lions attempted an onside kick with less that three minutes to go, but the Stamps successfully recovered the ball.

Calgary will go for their ninth straight win on Sunday against the Saskatchewan Roughriders while the Leos are back at home Friday to take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Game Overview

Ottawa’s recent three-game run both SU and ATS came to a sudden end last week, but it still has the slight edge in the East to repeat as division champions. The total stayed UNDER in that loss to the Tiger-Cats and it has now stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in nine of the RedBlacks’ last 10 games. Adding injury to insult, quarterback Trevor Harris is expected to be out several weeks after badly bruising his shoulder in that loss.

With Harris out of the lineup for Ottawa, Montreal has an excellent opportunity to make up some ground in the East, but it is going to need a much better effort from its defense. The one strength of this team coming into this season was its defense, but going back to a 41-40 loss to Winnipeg on July 27, the Alouettes have allowed at least 32 points in five of their last six games.

REDBLACKS RECLAIM EAST LEAD WITH WIN OVER ALS

MONTREAL — The Ottawa REDBLACKS’ offence did not miss a beat without star quarterback Trevor Harris, handing the Montreal Alouettes their fifth-straight loss in a 29-11 victory at Percival Molson Stadium on Sunday. Ottawa now holds first place in the East after the win.

Quarterback Drew Tate made his first start for Ottawa, and was effective until being forced from the game near the end of the first half with an injury. Running back William Powell led the way for the REDBLACKS after the half, and finished the day with an impressive 144 rushing yards on 25 carries.

Diontae Spencer easily had the play of the game, taking a missed Boris Bede field goal the distance for an incredible 113-yard return touchdown.

Quarterback Drew Willy had some success moving the ball after taking over for Montreal on offence, but in the end it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.

The opening possession for Tate and the REDBLACKS’ offence could not have gone much better. Tate came out looking sharp and efficient in his first start with the REDBLACKS, completing nine of 11 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown on the opening drive.

The impressive 85-yard drive was capped off with beautiful 16-yard catch and run by fullback Patrick Lavoie for the early touchdown. Tate completed the ensuing two-point convert to receiver Jake Harty, giving Ottawa the early 8-0 lead.

The REDBLACKS continued to move down the field on their next drive, with Tate spreading the ball around to numerous receivers. But Ottawa’s second offensive drive was cut short when Alouettes defensive back Jonathon Mincy brilliantly jumped a route and intercepted an errant Tate pass.

The Alouettes started out slow on offence, and were unable to capitalize on the turnover. Ottawa’s defensive front frustrated quarterback Darian Durant with pressure, including a sack from defensive end Jonathan Newsome.

It was special teams that appeared to spark momentum for Montreal in the opening quarter. Return ace Stefan Logan showed off his skills on an exciting 28-yard return, making his way up the sideline before being ruled out of bounds. But the drive did not progress from there, as Durant was unable to find a window in the Ottawa secondary. Kicker Boris Bede knocked through the 43-yard field goal to put Montreal on the board.

The Alouettes’ defence stood strong for a while after surrendering the early touchdown drive, holding Tate and the REDBLACKS to a 30-yard field goal from kicker Brett Maher.

Drew Willy took over at quarterback for Montreal after the offence failed to generate anything in the first quarter and a half. The change seemed to inject some life into the Als’ offence, as Willy completed his first two passes and found receiver Ernest Jackson for the team’s opening first down of the game.

But just when it appeared that Montreal was going to add to their score, a 54-yard field goal attempt by Bede fell short of the target and ended up in the waiting hands of Ottawa’s Diontae Spencer. Spencer turned on the jets and found daylight, taking the ball the length of the field for a 113-yard return touchdown.

The score was the second return touchdown for Spencer on the season, and the first allowed by Montreal this year. Tate successfully completed the two-point convert to receiver Greg Ellingson, and Ottawa later added to their lead with a dead ball single.

Things took an unfortunate turn for the Ottawa offence on their next drive, as Tate was forced to leave the game after taking a hit from Montreal defensive back Dondre Wright. Quarterback Ryan Lindley came in to run the REDBLACKS’ offence, but his first career CFL pass was intercepted in the end zone by Montreal’s Tevaughn Campbell.

Campbell went back into the end zone where he was tackled after already running the ball out, resulting in a safety that brought the score to 22-3.

Ottawa’s offence stepped up and managed to keep things moving despite losing Tate to injury. Lindley and the offensive unit made their way down the field and added to their lead with a 22-yard Maher field goal.

Willy remained in the game for Montreal after the half, and the decision to keep him in paid off when the quarterback led a six-play 75-yard scoring drive for the Als in the third quarter.

Running back Tyrell Sutton gave Montreal some momentum when he took the ball directly up the middle for a 43-yard run before being tackled near the goal line. Willy finished off the drive with a one-yard QB sneak touchdown and added a successful two-point convert pass to receiver Tiquan Underwood, bringing the score to 25-11.

With Tate out of the game, the REDBLACKS’ offence turned to their rushing attack to sustain drives and take time off the clock. Running back William Powell took charge and led the way in the second half, breaking tackles and gaining tough yards to keep Willy and the Montreal offence off the field.

Powell gained chunks of yardage every time he touched the ball, and his efforts led to a 31-yard Maher field goal with under 10 minutes to go in the game. Maher later added another point to Ottawa’s lead after sending a ball through the end zone for the single, putting the REDBLACKS up 29-11.

The Alouettes will head to Toronto to take on the Argonauts next week, while the REDBLACKS will head to Winnipeg for a matchup with the Blue Bombers.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 14

The Saskatchewan Roughriders got back to their winning ways last Friday with 27-19 victory against Hamilton as three-point road favorites to kickoff action in Week 13 of the CFL season.

In the first of two games on Saturday, Toronto successfully defended its home turf as a four-point underdog in a 34-26 win over Edmonton. It was the Eskimos fifth straight-up loss in a row.

Calgary extended its current SU winning streak to eight games with Saturday’s 27-13 victory against British Columbia as a nine-point home favorite. The weekend’s betting action came to a close on Sunday with Ottawa hammering Montreal 29-11 in a game that closed as a PICK.

Game Overview

The RedBlacks lost a tough one to Winnipeg at home in early August 33-30 in a game they were favored to win by 3 ½ points. Ottawa is a perfect 4-0 against the spread when closing as an underdog as opposed to a 2-4 record ATS when closing as a favorite. Drew Tate got the start at quarterback on Sunday for an injured Trevor Harris and he ended the game completing 21 of his 29 passing attempts for 185 yards and a score. Ryan Lindley also saw action when Tate was injured towards the end of the first half.

The well-rested Blue Bombers are coming off a bye following a home-and-home split against Saskatchewan in their previous two games. Going back to 33-25 victory against Toronto on July 13, Winnipeg has been able to score at least 33 points in eight of its last nine games. Matt Nichols has led the way in the passing game with 3,287 yards and 22 touchdown throws and Andrew Harris has the third-most rushing yards in the CFL with 656.

Hamilton’s brief two-game winning streak (SU and ATS) came to an end last week. Jeremiah Masoli put the ball up 48 times against Saskatchewan and he completed 28 passes for 328 yards and a score, but he was also picked off twice. He added another 62 yards on the ground to average 6.9 yards a carry. The Tiger-Cats’ defense gave up more than 22 points for the first time in three games.

The Lions have just one SU victory in their last five games while going 1-3-1 ATS during that same span. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in four of the five games. BC’s offense struggled against Calgary last week with just 167 yards through the air and 77 yards on the ground. Jonathon Jennings was back under center last week after losing his starting role to an injured Travis Lulay, who is out for the season with a knee injury.

Montreal will be looking to stop a five-game losing streak (SU and ATS) that started with a 38-6 loss to Toronto as a 1 ½-point road underdog on Aug. 19. The total has stayed UNDER in three of the five games behind an offense that has averaged just 14 points in those five losses. The Alouettes are averaging 19.3 points per game on the year. Drew Willy got the start at quarterback last week and he threw for just 83 yards to match the team’s 83 yards on the ground.

Toronto stayed within a half game of Ottawa for the lead in the East Division with last week’s win. The victory against Edmonton was just its second in its last seven games both SU and ATS including a 21-9 loss to Montreal on Aug. 11 as an eight-point road underdog in the first game of that home-and-home series. The Argonauts are averaging 23.8 PPG behind Ricky Ray at quarterback and their defense is allowing an average of 25.3 points a game.

Game Overview

The Stampeders are once again the class of the CFL behind their current SU eight-game winning streak. They have been pretty good to bettors along for the ride at 6-1-1 ATS and the total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games behind a stifling defense that has not allowed more than 24 points in each of its last eight games. Bo Levi Mitchell is fourth in the league in passing yards (3,491) and Jerome Messam remains at the top of the list when it comes to rushing yards with 770.

If there is one team that might be able to challenge Calgary right now, it could be the Roughriders. They have won five of their last seven games both SU and ATS after falling to Calgary 27-10 on the road as 10-point underdogs on July 22. Brandon Bridge filled in for an injured Kevin Glenn last week and he looked pretty sharp completing 21 of his 31 passing attempts for 231 yards and three touchdown throws. Glenn could be back this week, but Bridge proved that he can run this offense.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers did not give up the lead all game as they cruised to a 29-9 victory over the Ottawa REDBLACKS at Investors Group Field.

Receiver Darvin Adams led the charge on offence for the Bombers with 195 yards and a touchdown on seven catches while quarterback Matt Nichols completed 23 of 34 passes for 319 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Ryan Lindley made his first CFL start at pivot for the REDBLACKS with both Trevor Harris and Drew Tate out with injuries. The 28-year-old was contained to just 152 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.

After a 20 minute rain delay, the windy and wet conditions were prevalent in the first quarter as neither team was able to generate much offence.

The Bombers were the first to strike midway through the first quarter. Winnipeg appeared to have a touchdown when Nichols connected with Adams in the end zone, but the major was called back after the Bombers were called for an illegal block. Winnipeg turned to Justin Medlock, who notched a 27-yard field goal to put the Bombers on the board.

The REDBLACKS notched a single before the end of the quarter to avoid being shut out in the first 15 minutes.

Winnipeg extended their lead with another Medlock field goal early in the second quarter to put the Bombers up 6-1.

Medlock split the uprights for a third time with just over three minutes to go in the half to put more distance between his team and the REDBLACKS.

The Bombers capitalized on a Ottawa turnover when the REDBLACKS handed the ball off to William Powell on the first play of the ensuing drive. The running back didn’t have the ball for long. Jackson Jeffcoat recovered his own forced fumble to give the Bombers possession at the Ottawa 36-yard line. Andrew Harris capped off the drive by rushing for 24 yards into the end zone untouched to extend the Bombers lead to 16-2 at halftime.

The Bombers defence did not give Lindley any room to move through the first 30 minutes. The REDBLACKS pivot was contained to only 60 yards on six-of-16 passing. Ottawa linebacker Taylor Reed racked up seven tackles through the first half alone.

Winnipeg continued to keep the peddle on the gas in the third quarter. Nichols made a short pitch pass to Tim Flanders deep in Ottawa territory. The 25-year-old charged four yards into the end zone to give the Bombers their second major of the game. The extra point attempt was no good to keep the score at 22-2.

Ottawa attempted a field goal near the end of the third quarter. Maher’s 46-yard attempt sailed wide and out the back of the end zone to give the REDBLACKS there third single of the game.

The REDBLACKS had their best scoring opportunity at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Ottawa found themselves just outside of the the red zone following a Blue Bomber turnover. However, the REDBLACKS gave the ball back just a few plays later when a scrambling Lindley fumbled the ball. Maurice Leggett made the recovery to put the Bombers back in charge.

Just two plays later, Nichols hit Adams in stride for a long 75-yard touchdown to continue the Bombers display of offensive dominance.

Ottawa found the end zone before the end of the night when Powell charged 11 yards across the plane for the REDBLACKS first and only major of the night.

The REDBLACKS attempted a successful onside kick after the score. The ball bounced off of a Bombers’ defender and into the hands of Brad Sinopoli to give Ottawa possession once again. Lindley attempted a long pass to Greg Ellingson, but the ball was picked off by Leggett.

The Bombers will try to make it three wins in a row when they take on the slumping Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday night while the REDBLACKS return home to take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday.
