MAKING GAINS: BELL RUNS ESKIMOS PAST LIONS

EDMONTON — Sean Whyte kicked two late field goals while Shakir Bell reached the century mark on the ground, leading the Edmonton Eskimos to a timely 27-23 win over the BC Lions on Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium.

Bell added a touchdown to his 108 rushing yards on 23 carries while Deon Lacey’s late interception helped seal the deal, notching a pivotal division win for the Green and Gold and ending a three-game losing streak.

The win moves the Eskimos into a playoff spot via the East Division crossover following the Argos’ loss on Friday night.

Mike Reilly threw for 300 yards on 24-of-31 passing in the win, scoring once on the ground and once through the air while also throwing an interception. Adarius Bowman caught six passes for 121 yards, including a go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter.

The Lions failed to win despite jumping out to a 14-point lead in the first half and getting major contributions from Jonathon Jennings and Emmanuel Arceneaux. The latter caught seven passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns, the majority of his production coming in the opening 30 minutes.

Jennings finished with 249 passing yards and two touchdowns, but was contained throughout most of the second half and threw a crucial late-game interception to Lacey.

After first feeling each other out, it wasn’t until late in the first quarter that the Lions and Eskimos started to pick things up offensively.

It started when the Lions took over possession near midfield with just under five minutes left, when Jennings completed four straight passes, the last one coming in stride to Arceneaux in the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown.

The Lions missed the two-point try but on their next possession went right back to work. A six-yard completion to Arceneaux kept the drive alive on second-and-five, then, on the very first play of the second quarter, Jennings dropped back and delivered a strike downfield to Arceneaux behind coverage.

The veteran receiver took that pass 68 yards untouched for his second touchdown of the night, while Jeremiah Johnson scored on the two-point convert to extend BC’s lead to 14-0 in the early going.

The Eskimos, needing a win to climb into a playoff spot via the East Division crossover, got the response they desperately needed not long later.

A 19-yard completion to Bowman moved the chains on second and 10, and that sparked what was to come – a 16-yard completion to Chris Getzlaf and a 13-yard run by Bell on the way to a one-yard touchdown run by Reilly, cutting the Eskimos’ deficit to 14-7.

With time running out in the second quarter, the Eskimos completed the opening-half comeback. Reilly connected with Bowman on a 58-yard completion on second and long, while on the next play Bell finished things off with his lone touchdown of the night, pulling the Esks into a 14-14 draw.

That capped off a seven-play, 62-yard drive, while the Lions added a punt single from Richie Leone to take a 15-14 lead into the half. While the Lions’ lead may have been slim, Arceneaux was easily the star of the first two quarters, hauling in six catches for 140 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

After scoring twice to end the first half, Reilly and the Esks’ offence picked up exactly where they left off out of break. Bell ran for a first down and Reilly moved the chains twice on completions to Walker, eventually setting up a 22-yard touchdown pass to Bowman.

That capped off a nine-play scoring drive that took 4:30 off the clock, while Reilly’s first touchdown pass of the game was his 21st of the season, moving him into a tie for sixth on the Eskimos’ all-time list with Damon Allen.

Down for the first time all evening, the visiting Lions chipped away at Edmonton’s lead, sacking Reilly and forcing a safety before later adding a field goal, making it a 21-20 Eskimo lead heading into the fourth quarter.

After the Lions’ passing attack couldn’t be stopped through the game’s first 20 minutes, Edmonton’s defence made life difficult for Jennings and co. in the form of constant pressure and heavy hits. That appeared to continue into the fourth when the Eskimos stymied what looked like a promising drive with Almondo Sewell’s eighth sack of the season back towards midfield — but on second and 18, Jennings rifled a pass into the mitts of Gore, again moving the sticks on a clutch completion.

That led to a go-ahead field goal from Leone, giving BC a 23-21 lead with half a quarter left in the game.

Brandon Zylstra’s third catch of the night from Reilly moved the Esks across midfield on a 15-yard gain, while the Eskimos’ field general in Reilly showed his toughness once again when he took a hit to pick up extra yards with his legs down to the BC 19.

The Lions tightened up and forced a field goal, but Whtye’s first three-pointer of the night put the Green and Gold back in front, 24-23.

On the very next play, Jennings’ pass was intercepted by Deon Lacey, giving Edmonton the ball right back with a chance to add to the lead or better yet run valuable time off the clock. Reilly and the Esks milked some clock then extended the lead on Whyte’s second field goal of the game, extending the lead to 27-23.

The Lions had a slight window to steal the game late, but after Jennings moved that unit up near midfield, a Hail Mary attempt with zeroes on the clock ended in an interception by Brandyn Thompson.

Running the ball was an issue for the Lions, who entered the night as the CFL’s number one rushing team, as BC managed only 69 yards on the ground, including 41 for Johnson on only eight attempts.

Adam Bighill was a monster on the BC defence, coming up with 12 defensive tackles and a quarterback sack. Solomon Elimimian checked in with 10 tackles of his own.

Jennings was sacked only twice, but both sacks came in key situations in the second half as the Esks’ defence turned up the pressure in the final 30 minutes.

Edmonton looks to build on Friday’s victory with a visit to third-place Winnipeg next Friday in a game with major playoff implications. The Lions, who had their three-game winning streak ended, aim to get back on track when they welcome the Ottawa REDBLACKS to BC Place on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-4 SU, 6-5-1 ATS) vs. Calgary Stampeders (10-1-1 SU, 10-2 ATS)
        Point-spread: Calgary -9 ½
        Total: 52 ½

        Game Overview

Winnipeg’s current SU winning streak stands at seven games with last week’s win, but it was the first time it covered a spread in its last three outings. The total in that game went OVER the closing 50 ½-point line and it has gone OVER in four of its last five games. The Blue Bombers got another strong effort from quarterback Matt Nichols. He only threw for 232 yards and a score, but he completed a highly efficient 72.7 percent of his 33 passing attempts.

The Stampeders have now won their last nine games SU and they are a highly profitable 8-1 ATS during this run. The total went OVER 54 against the RedBlacks last week and it has gone OVER in their last three games. In what is beginning to sound like a broken record, Bo Levi Mitchell was once again highly successful moving the ball up and down the field through the air with 353 yards passing and two touchdowns while completing 23-of-25 passing attempts.

        Betting Trends

The Blue Bombers’ last loss this season was against Calgary 33-18 on July 21 as 5 ½-point home underdogs. The Stampeders have now won the last five meetings in this West Division tilt SU with a slight 3-2 edge ATS. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in the last three meetings.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-6 SU, 5-7 ATS) vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-10 SU, 6-6 ATS)
        Point-spread: Hamilton -4 ½
        Total: 53 ½

        Game Overview

The Tiger-Cats have not won back-to-back games either SU or ATS since mid-July in what has been a wild roller-coaster ride to an even 6-6 SU mark. In last week’s close call against Montreal, Zach Collaros connected with Luke Tasker and Andrew Fantuz a combined 10 times for 109 yards and a score. He ended the game with 291 yards passing while completing 25-of-36 attempts. Ross Scheurman added another 79 yards on the ground to pace the running game.

The Roughriders’ second win of the season can be mainly attributed to the elevated play of quarterback Darian Durant. He set up the game-tying touchdown with two minutes left in the fourth quarter and he ran in the winning score in overtime. Despite the SU 2-10 record on the year, Saskatchewan has now covered the spread in its last four games.

        Betting Trends

In the only interdivision matchup on the Week 14 schedule, Hamilton brings a four-game winning streak both SU and ATS against the Roughriders into this Saturday’s game. This includes a late-August 53-7 romp this season as a 10-point home favorite. The total went OVER 54 in that game after staying UNDER in the four previous meetings.

BOMBERS, STAMPS PUT STREAKS ON THE LINE IN WESTERN DUEL

CALGARY — When two teams with a combined record of 18-5-1 meet up, you know it’s going to be a good football game.

Such will be the case on Saturday afternoon in Calgary, where the 10-1-1 Stamps will host the 8-4 Winnipeg Blue Bombers at McMahon Stadium.

The Bombers are 1-13 in their last 14 trips to McMahon, but are also on their best run in recent memory: Winnipeg’s last loss came on July 21, and Mike O’Shea’s team has maneuvered itself into the mix near the top of the West Division.

Of course, the Stampeders are on a run of their own: Bo Levi Mitchell and co. haven’t dropped points since an early-July tie in Ottawa, and Calgary is yet to lose at McMahon in 2016.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are en fuego right now. On fire.

Even in the absence of star running back Andrew Harris, Winnipeg was able to brush aside the Toronto Argos last week to extend its winning streak to seven.

“As players, we always move on to the next week fairly quickly,” receiver Weston Dressler told BlueBombers.com. “For us, we’re trying to approach it like we have for the past 12 games now — we’ve done a good job the last few weeks on staying focused on the present and what’s in front of us.”

It appears the Bombers will once again be without Harris, their dual-threat back, after Timothy Flanders took first-team reps at practice this week.

“All these guys, you develop a little trust with them and give them every opportunity you can, said Head Coach Mike O’Shea. “You give them the most amount of time you can for them to be able to compete on game day, and I’ve got no problem with that.

“These guys have been through training camp, they know the system and you’ve certainly got to give them that opportunity.”

Another spot of concern for Winnipeg ahead of its trip to Cowtown is the absence of leading linebacker Ian Wild, whose 69 total tackles lead the Bombers. Wild will not dress on Saturday, and his presence will be missed in the second-tier of the Winnipeg defence.

Going up against a premier quarterback in Bo Levi Mitchell will be a difficult challenge for Winnipeg’s defence, which has established itself as a big-play, high-turnover unit.

“He’s certainly competitive,” O’Shea said of Mitchell. “He’s been in the system for quite some time (and) gets good protection. He gets rid of the ball quickly (and) they say he’s got unbelievable vision in terms of seeing the field.”

The Bomber defence has been nothing short of superb this season, ranking first in interceptions (22) and second in points allowed (268) and forced fumbles (15). As far as individuals go, the Bombers have the league’s two top ball hawks in their secondary in Maurice Leggett (league-best six INTs) and the recently-acquired TJ Heath (five INTs).

“It’s going to come down to who’s more disciplined,” Leggett said of Saturday’s game. “It’s going to be a hard-fought battle — win or lose, we’re confident and we feel like we’re not respected at all.”

The Calgary Stampeders are certainly respected around the CFL by this point.

Dave Dickenson’s football team is coming off a dominant 48-23 win against Ottawa at home last week, becoming the first team to clinch a playoff spot in the process.

“I think the guys in the locker room saw this (success) coming. We believe in ourselves, in the guys around us, and our talent,” Stamps quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell told Stampeders.com. “We’re happy with where we are, but not satisfied with it.”

As for facing the red-hot Matt Nichols-led Bombers, Mitchell understands Winnipeg’s path to success.

“They’re kind of tailoring the offence to Matt now, and once you do that with a quarterback, that’s when you get comfortable and start putting up points,” said Mitchell. “We have to make sure we go out and treat this team with the respect they deserve.”

Veteran Calgary defensive lineman Charleston Hughes remains confident heading into Saturday’s game against Winnipeg.

“We’re going to get to Nichols a lot this game, I’m not too worried about that,” said Hughes, who leads the league in sacks (10) at age 32. “I’m experienced in this league — I know how to beat certain things and what teams throw at me. There’s nothing I haven’t faced in this league.”

The Stamps were able to effectively shut down the Bombers in their two prior meetings this season — 36-22 and 33-18 Calgary wins — but know Winnipeg is a much different team since their last matchup in Week 5.

“It’s getting to be that time,” said Head Coach Dave Dickenson this week. “It’s Fall, which is football season in my opinion (and) it’s been a bit of a grind, so we’re hoping to get that energy and crowd behind us.”

The Stamps will hope to find their run game early on Saturday with league-leading running back Jerome Messam. The Toronto-native Messam leads the league in rush yards (739) and touchdowns (8).

          By the Numbers

6 – Turnovers created by Calgary DB Jamar Wall (three interceptions, three forced fumbles).

22 – League-high pass TDs for Calgary QB Bo Levi Mitchell.

41 – League-leading field goals for Winnipeg K Justin Medlock.

528 – Combined points allowed by Calgary (260) and Winnipeg (268), the league’s two best defences.

          The Skinny

          What a matchup.

Two of Eastern Washington’s best-ever quarterbacks meeting on the professional field — there’s a storyline.

The league’s two hottest teams, with a combined 16-game winning streak — there’s another.

A potential tightening of the gap at the top of the West Division — there’s a third.

Should be a fun afternoon of football in Cowtown.

Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. ET and can be seen live on TSN or followed online via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

JUST PLAIN CRAZY: MITCHELL, STAMPS HOLD OFF FURIOUS BOMBERS COMEBACK FOR 10TH STRAIGHT WIN

CALGARY — It was close, but in the end the Bo Levi Mitchell and the Calgary Stampeders were just too much for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Mitchell completed 29 of his 43 passes for 361 yards and two touchdowns, while Kamar Jordan reeled in nine passes for 126 yards and a touchdown, as the Stamps held off a furious comeback attempt by the Blue Bombers en-route to a wild 36-34 win on Saturday afternoon.

Matt Nichols was also solid, overcoming a rough first half en-route to a 287-yard, two-touchdown performance.

The win was Calgary’s 10th straight, and snapped a seven-game win streak by the Bombers.

The Stamps haven’t lost a game since Week 1, with a Week 3 tie to the REDBLACKS serving as their most recent blemish, while the Bombers had won seven straight, with their most recent loss prior to today coming to Calgary back in Week 5.

As per usual, Mitchell and the vaunted Stampeders offence wasted no time making their mark on today’s affair.

Thanks to a 47-yard return off the game’s opening kickoff by Roy Finch, Mitchell began his first possession from his own 46 yard line with an eye on the endzone.

From there, he proceeded to complete four of his next six passes before finding Kamar Jorden on a corner route for a five-yard touchdown pass.

Rene Paredes would tack on a 27-yard field goal on Calgary’s next drive to give the Stamps a 10-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

After a few quiet drives by Mitchell’s standards, the CFL’s most prolific offence went to work on extending their first half lead.

Starting on his 52 yard line, Mitchell embarked on a six play, 58-yard drive which culminated in a 14-yard touchdown completion to Lemar Durant.

But while the Stamps were alive and rolling, the same couldn’t be said for the Bombers, who to that point in the game managed to register just 50 total yards offensively.

Things only got worse for the visitors on the offensive side of the ball, as Nichols saw a pass towards the sideline intercepted by Jamar Wall, who used a convoy of blockers to return it to 40 yards into Winnipeg territory.

The pick proved to be extremely costly, as the Stamps – seemingly at will – worked their way to the endzone, with Messam plowing himself in from 15 yards out.

The score increased Calgary’s lead to 24-0.

But Winnipeg’s slumbering offence wouldn’t sleep for much longer. And it was tailback Timothy Flanders who proved played the part of the alarm clock.

Facing third and one with less than three minutes remaining in the half, Flanders found a hole and busted through the line for a 50-yard touchdown dash.

With Andrew Harris still on the shelf with a nagging lower-body injury, Flanders made the most of his start last week against the Argos, rushing for 102 yards and a touchdown, while adding 34 more yards on four receptions.

But the Stamps did whatever they could to squash out any hopes of a Bomber comeback, as they responded with a 17-yard field goal by Paredes to improve their lead to 20 before the break.

Mitchell was solid after 30 minutes of action, completing 16 of his 23 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Nichols, meanwhile, was good on only nine of his 20 attempts for just 88 yards and one interception.

Much like last week, however, Nichols appeared to save his best for the second half. Down 23 points with less than five minutes to go in the third quarter, Nichols guided the Bombers on a seven-play, 72-yard drive which ended with a 10-yard touchdown strike to Clarence Denmark.

The score brought the Bombers within 16 of Calgary’s lead, and they weren’t done there.

On their next possession, Nichols continued to pick apart the once-indestructible Stamps defence, en-route to a one–yard touchdown run that brought them within 10.

The drive saw Nichols complete all four of his passes, including a spectacular effort by receiver Ryan Smith for a gain of 40.

On the ensuing Calgary possession, Stamps receiver Simon Charbonneau-Campeau hauled in a pass from Mitchell, but immediately fumbled it after being tackled by Tony Burnett. The ball was eventually scooped up by Shayon Green and lateraled to Khalil Bass who ran untouched into the endzone for six.

The extra point brought the comeback effort within just a field goal.

The Stamps had a chance to slow down the bleeding, but Paredes saw his 42 yard field goal attempt ping off the field goal post.

However, Paredes had a measure of redemption on Calgary’s next possession, as he connected on a 37-yard field goal to increase their lead to six.

Not discouraged, Nichols led a furiously-efficient last-minute drive, while resulted in a touchdown pass to Julian Feoli-Gudino to tie the game at 33. Justin Medlock’s extra point gave them a one point lead with 20 seconds to go in the game.

But 20 seconds was all Mitchell needed to put the Stamps in a position to win. The veteran gunslinger completed two quick passes to Jordan and Durant for gains of 14 and 22 yards respectively, setting up a 52-yard attempt for Paredes with only four seconds left on the clock.

Nursing a calf injury, the icey-veined kicker drilled it right down the middle for the game winner, sending McMahon Stadium into a frenzy.

Next week, the Stamps travel to Hamilton to take on the Tiger-Cats, while the Bombers will return home to face off against the Eskimos.

            • GAME RECAP

GALE LEADS RIDERS TO LAST-MINUTE VICTORY OVER TICATS

REGINA – The Riders’ resurgence continued at Old Mosaic Stadium on Saturday night, as backup QB Mitchell Gale led Saskatchewan on a game-winning drive as time expired for their second consecutive victory.

Darian Durant and the Riders offence received the ball to start, and carried some of the winning momentum into Saturday’s tilt with Hamilton. Durant started the game with four consecutive completions and the home team wasted no time putting points on the board, as Tyler Crapigna booted home a field goal to put the Riders up 3-0 early.

The Tiger-Cats offence took over following the field goal, but wouldn’t keep the ball for long. Collaros’ first pass attempt of the game was underthrown to WR John Chiles, and former Ticat DB Ed Gainey came up with a big interception for the Riders.

Durant was able to string together a few more completions on the next drive, including a pair to WR Caleb Holley, but the Riders were forced to punt.

Despite a brilliant coffin corner punt from Josh Bartel, Collaros and the Tiger-Cats offence came out firing, with first down passes to Andy Fantuz and Spencer Watt to move to midfield. Another big completion to Fantuz brought the Ticats within striking distance, and Collaros found Brandon Banks, who scurried into the end zone for the Hamilton touchdown.

After throwing an interception on his first pass attempt of the game, Collaros rebounded by completing five of six pass attempts for 103 yards on a 105-yard touchdown drive to give the Tiger-Cats their first lead of the game.

Durant came out slinging on the next Roughriders drive, connecting with Holley for a 30 yard gain before finding Armanti Edwards down the middle for a spectacular 46-yard touchdown grab. Crapigna’s extra point was good, and the Riders took a 10-7 lead.

Collaros continued to work on the next drive, finding Fantuz and WR Junior Collins twice while completing four of six attempts. An end zone shot to Fantuz fell incomplete, and Maher kicked home the field goal, tying the game at 10.

The high-flying football continued as the Riders took over, as Durant connected with National WR Nic Demski for a 53 yard completion before finding Holley deep, fighting his way down to the one-yard line.

An apparent goal-line fumble by Riders QB Mitchell Gale, which was returned for a touchdown by Adrian Tracy, was overturned, and Durant punched it in on the following play to give the Riders a 17-10 lead.

Neither offence could muster much in the dying minutes, and the Riders headed into halftime with a 17-10 lead on home soil. Durant finished the half completing 75% of his attempts for 268 yards and a touchdown, with Holley recording seven catches for 102 yards.

The defences took over in the third quarter, forcing three punts to open the second half. Brett Maher had a chance to pull Hamilton to within four, but missed a 42-yard field goal wide right.

The Roughriders found themselves deep in Hamilton territory at the end of the third quarter, but backup QB Mitchell Gale was intercepted by DB Dominique Ellis to halt Saskatchewan’s momentum.

Gale took the place of Durant, who left the game due to injury and would not return.

Maher had another opportunity after a 37-yard Hamilton drive, but missed the 53-yard attempt wide left, settling for a single.

The Riders offence didn’t look the same after Durant’s departure, settling for a punt as they held a slim six point lead in the fourth quarter.

Collaros and the Tiger-Cats took over with six minutes remaining in the game and went to work, battling their way down the field. Fantuz remained a popular target for Collaros, eclipsing 100 yards on the drive.

Jeremiah Masoli made the most of his opportunity on second and two, following a perfect block by OL Ryan Bomben 21 yards to the end zone for a Ticats touchdown. Maher’s extra point was good and the Tiger-Cats took a narrow one-point lead nearing the end of the fourth.

Gale and the Riders offence took possession with time running out, and the backup pivot ran the three-minute drill with expertise, completing five pass attempts for 44 yards and rushing for 12 himself before Tyler Crapigna kicked home a short field goal to seal the victory.

The Roughriders have now won two straight games for the first time in 2016, and will head into a bye week before travelling to Toronto to take on the Argonauts.

Following their second consecutive loss, the Tiger-Cats will head home next week where they’ll host the CFL’s best Calgary Stampeders, who were the first team to clinch a playoff berth this season.

                    Team Betting Notes

                    -- Calgary (11-1-1)
won an entertaining divisional game against Winnipeg (8-5), cooling off the Blue Bombers 36-34. It was Winnipeg's first loss since July 21, also against the Stampeders. In fact the Bombers are 8-2 SU and 6-2-2 ATS against everyone else, and 0-3 SU/ATS against Calgary this season. The good news for Winnipeg is they will not see the Stamps again unless they meet in the playoffs.

-- Ottawa (6-5-1) hammered visiting Toronto (5-8), improving to 2-1 SU/ATS against the Argonauts this season. The 'under' is now 5-2 over the past seven games, and 7-3-1 over their past 11 outings.

-- The Argonauts are struggling against the number lately. They opened 4-2 ATS in their first six games, but they're just 1-6 SU/ATS over their past seven outings.

-- Saskatchewan (3-10) has won back-to-back games for the first time this season, topping Hamilton (6-7) by a 20-18 score as 5 1/2-point underdogs at home. The Roughriders improved to 4-0-1 ATS over the past five games after opening the season 2-6 ATS in the first eight games.

-- The Tiger Cats have failed to cover in a season-worst three straight games, and they're just 2-6 ATS over the past eight outings.

-- Edmonton (6-7) got untracked with a 27-23 victory over the BC Lions (8-4), snapping a three-game winning streak to B.C. The Lions entered 7-1 ATS in their past eight games. These sides will face each other Oct. 22 in Vancouver.

                    • CFL Betting Notes - Week 15

Action in Week 14 got underway last Friday with Ottawa getting past Toronto 29-12 as a 5 ½-point home favorite in a key matchup for playoff position in the East Division. Edmonton bounced back from a bad loss last week with a 27-23 victory against West Division rival British Columbia as a slight 1 ½-point favorite at home in the backend of Friday’s double-header.

In Saturday’s CFL action, the biggest game of the week ended with Calgary beating Winnipeg 36-34 as a 9 ½-point home favorite to extend its straight-up winning streak to 10 games while ending the Blue Bombers’ impressive run at seven games. Saskatchewan won for the second week in a row by taking down Hamilton 20-18 as 5 ½-point home underdogs to close out Week 14. The following is a look at all four matchups this weekend in the CFL.

                      Friday, Sept. 30

Edmonton Eskimos (6-7 SU, 4-8-1) vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-5 SU, 7-5-1 ATS)
                      Point-spread: Winnipeg -3
                      Total: 54

                      Game Overview

Edmonton’s much-needed win last week snapped a straight-up three-game skid and it was the first time it covered against the spread in its last five outings. Credit the play of running back Shakir Bell, who rushed for 108 yards and a score on 23 carries. Quarterback Mike Reilly added another 300 yards to his CFL-high 4,353 passing yards this season and his one touchdown throw gives him 21 on the year.

The Blue Bombers’ furious come-back attempt against Calgary last week with 20 points in the fourth quarter was almost enough to preserve a very impressive seven-game winning streak and they did serve notice that they are for real as a Grey Cup contender. Matt Nichols ended the game with 287 yards passing while completing 27 of his 44 passing attempts and Clarence Denmark was his leading receiver with nine catches for 84 yards and a score.

                      Betting Trends

These two West Division rivals have split the first two meetings this season with the road team winning each time both SU and ATS. Edmonton has a 6-2 edge ATS over the last eight meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in five of the last six games.

                      Saturday, Oct. 1

Calgary Stampeders (11-1-1 SU, 10-3 ATS) vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-6 SU, 5-7 ATS)
                      Point-spread: Calgary -3
                      Total: 55

                      Game Overview

Behind 10 SU wins in a row while going a highly profitable 8-2 ATS, the Stampeders have now established themselves as the Gold Standard in the CFL. Bo Levi Mitchell is on a clear path to being the league’s Most Outstanding Player following yet another 300-plus passing yards performance. He threw two more touchdown strikes in last week’s crucial win to raise his league-high total to 24. The Stampeders also gained 100 yards on the ground in a balanced offensive effort.

Once again, the Tiger-Cats’ inconsistency on both sides of the ball cost them a game that they were favored to win. They have now failed to cover in their last three games closing as favorites, so maybe they will have better luck this week as underdogs at home. Zach Collaros completed 26-of-40 passing attempts for 310 yards and a score in last week’s stunning last-second loss to Saskatchewan, but with the game on the line Hamilton’s defense could not make the stops when it needed to the most.

                      Betting Trends

Calgary won the first meeting this season 30-24 in late August as a four-point home favorite. It is has now won the last 10 meetings SU while going an even 5-5 ATS. The total in that game stayed UNDER 55 and it has stayed UNDER in nine of the last 10 games between the two.

Ottawa RedBlacks (6-5-1 SU, 5-7 ATS) vs. British Columbia Lions (8-4 SU, 9-3 ATS)
                      Point-spread: BC -6
                      Total: 53 ½

                      Game Overview

Ottawa’s Week 14 win has it back on top in the East, but it has still been a rough ride for bettors with a 2-6 record ATS in its last eight games. The total stayed UNDER 53 ½ points against the Argonauts and it has stayed UNDER in five of the RedBlacks’ last seven contests. Trevor Harris turned in another solid performance with 274 yards passing while connecting on 71.4 percent of his 35 throws, but the bulk of the team’s 29 points came on five field goals and 109 kick return for a score on a missed Toronto field goal.

The Lions’ loss to Edmonton pretty much has them fighting for second place in the West right now. This setback snapped a three-game winning streak both SU and ATS that started with a six-point road victory against Ottawa. Last week, Jonathon Jennings threw for 278 yards against the Eskimos, but he only completed 57.1 percent of his 28 passing attempts with two completions going to the wrong team as interceptions.

                      Betting Trends

BC has won three of the last five meetings SU including that 29-23 victory on Aug. 25 as a 2 ½-point road underdog. The RedBlacks have the slight 3-2 edge ATS and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in all five games.

                      Sunday, Oct. 2

Toronto Argonauts (5-8 SU, 5-8 ATS) vs. Montreal Alouettes (3-9 SU, 4-8 ATS)
                      Point-spread: PICK
                      Total: 49

                      Game Overview

Toronto’s loss to Ottawa last week was its sixth setback both SU and ATS in its last seven games and it now has to be concerned about even making the playoffs this season with Edmonton moving in position to be a crossover team from the West. A change at quarterback to newly acquired Drew Willy in place of an ineffective Dan LeFevour did not provide the necessary spark against the RedBlacks and an injured Ricky Ray (ribs) is still a few weeks away from returning to the lineup.

The Alouettes are coming off a bye, but with Saskatchewan winning its last two games, they are in position to be considered the worst team in the CFL right now. Montreal has averaged 20.8 points a game this season and it has not scored more than 18 points in three of the four games in its current four-game SU losing streak. It has only covered a spread twice in its last seven outings.

                      Betting Trends

Toronto won the first meeting this season 30-17 in late July as a 4 ½-point home favorite, but Montreal still has the slight 3-2 edge both SU and ATS in the last five meetings. The total went OVER 46 in that first game after staying UNDER in the previous six meetings.
