      League Betting Notes

-- Favorites went 3-1 SU in Week 16
-- Favorites went 3-1 ATS in Week 16
-- Road teams posted a 3-1 SU record in Week 16
-- Road teams posted a 3-1 ATS record in Week 16
-- The 'Over' went 4-0 in Week 16

      Team Betting Notes

-- Calgary (13-1-1) is showing no signs of letting up. They won their 12th consecutive game with a convincing 48-20 victory at Toronto (5-10). The Stampeders are 12-0 SU in the past 12 dating back to July 8, and they have managed a 9-1 ATS mark over the past 10 outings, and 12-2 ATS in the past 14. The Stamps are doing it on the road, too, going 5-0-1 SU and 6-0 ATS in their past six road games since dropping their first road game of the season in Week 1.

-- It mght be too little, too late for Saskatchewan (4-10), but they are playing much better football lately. The Roughriders won their third straight game, and their first road outing of the season, topping Ottawa (6-7-1). The Roughriders have dropped the RedBlacks in both meetings, and the 'over' is 2-0 in those games. Saskatchewan has posted an impressive 5-0-1 ATS mark over the past six games.

-- Montreal (4-10) still hasn't been able to cobble together a two-game win streak. After an impressive win last week, the Alouettes fell flat against Edmonton (8-7).

-- The Eskimos have equaled a season-best with three straight covers. The 'over' is 6-2 in the past eight games for the Esks heading into their showdown with the BC Lions (9-5). The Esks won 27-23 at home Sept. 23 in the first meeting with the Lions, one of just four games in 14 tries the Lions haven't covered.

-- Speaking of the Lions, they were dumped 37-35 at Winnipeg (9-6). The Bombers have covered three of the past four, and they're 7-2-1 ATS in their past 10 outings.

      • CFL Betting Notes - Week 17
        October 11, 2016

While it still might be a case of too little, too late Saskatchewan posted its third-straight win on Friday by beating Ottawa 32-20 in overtime as a 6 ½-point road favorite.

In Saturday’s CFL action, Winnipeg won a crucial West Division showdown by beating British Columbia 37-35 as a slight 1 ½-point favorite at home.

There were two games on Monday’s CFL holiday slate starting with Edmonton doubling up Montreal 40-20 as a three-point road favorite.

In the other matchup, Calgary continued its winning ways with a routine 48-20 romp over Toronto as a 9 ½-point road favorite to extend its current SU winning streak to 12 games.

        Friday, Oct. 14

Ottawa RedBlacks (6-7-1 SU, 5-9 ATS) vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-8 SU, 5-9 ATS)
        Point-spread: Hamilton -2
        Total: 53

        Game Overview

Ottawa has now lost five of its last seven games both straight-up and against the spread heading into the first game of this crucial East Division home-and-home series. Defensively, the RedBlacks have given up an average of 33 points over their last four games as opposed to a season average of 27.6 points allowed. In last week’s stunning loss to Saskatchewan, Ottawa turned to veteran quarterback Henry Burris for a spark and it is unclear as to whether or not Trevor Harris will remain the starter for Friday night.

The Tiger-Cats stumbled into last week’s bye with a troubling 1-3 SU record in their previous four games while going a costly 0-4 ATS. Their main issue during this recent slide has been putting points on the board with an average of just 19 points over their last four contests. The total has stayed UNDER in their last three games. Last time out against Calgary in Week 15, both Zach Collaros and Jeramiah Masoli saw action at quarterback after Collaros was injured in the first half. He is listed as out for Friday night.

        Betting Trends

The RedBlacks have won the last three meetings SU and they have a 4-1 edge ATS in the last five games between these division rivals. The total has gone OVER in three of the last four meetings.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-6 SU, 8-6-1 ATS) vs. BC Lions (9-6 SU, 10-4 ATS)
        Point-spread: BC -5 ½
        Total: 54 ½

        Game Overview

This will be the second game in this West Division home-and-home showdown with Winnipeg gaining the early edge. Matt Nichols put the ball up 32 times in last week’s win against BC and his top two targets were Weston Dressler and Andrew Harris with a combined 10 catches for 115 yards and a score. The Blue Bombers gave up a total of 422 passing yards in that game along with another 91 yards on the ground.

While Jonathon Jennings had a career day throwing the ball in the first meeting, he also tossed a pair of interceptions that did not help BC’s cause. The Lions got a huge effort from wide receivers’ Bryan Burnham and Emmanuel Arceneaux in last week’s losing effort. Burnham caught nine balls for 208 yards and Arceneaux added 10 receptions for 150 yards, but neither player made their way into the end zone against the Blue Bombers.

        Betting Trends

Winnipeg has now won four of the last six meetings SU with a 4-1-1 record ATS. The total went OVER last week’s 54-point closing line and it has gone OVER in three of the last four meetings.

        Saturday, Oct. 15

Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-10, 8-6 ATS) vs. Toronto Argonauts (5-10 SU, 5-10)
        Point-spread: Toronto -1
        Total: 51

        Game Overview

The Roughriders’ late-season push to possibly sneak into the playoffs continued with their third SU win, but the bigger story for bettors has been six-straight covers ATS. Last week against Winnipeg, Darian Durant had one of his best road games of the season with 328 passing yards and two touchdown throws while going 22-for-38. The bad news is that after Armanti Edwards came up big in that game as well with six receptions for 83 yards he was lost for the season with a hand injury.

The Argonauts’ steady downward spiral that started with an early August loss to Winnipeg has resulted in just one win both SU and ATS in their last nine games. The total went OVER the 52 ½-point closing line in Monday’s loss to Calgary and it has now gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in five of their last six games behind a defense that has allowed an average of 38.5 points during this same span.

        Betting Trends

Toronto has won five of the last six meetings SU while going 4-2 ATS including a 30-17 victory in Week 2 as a 3 ½-point road underdog. The total stayed UNDER 51 ½ points in that game after going OVER in six of the previous seven games between the two.

Montreal Alouettes (4-10 SU, 5-9 ATS) vs. Calgary Stampeders (13-1-1 SU, 12-3 ATS)
        Point-spread: Calgary -15 ½
        Total: 52

        Game Overview

Montreal is another team from the East that has far more losses than wins since August with a SU 2-7 record in its last nine games. The Alouettes did manage to cover in two of their last three games and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in three of their last five contests. After showing some signs of life on offense with a 38-point outburst two weeks ago in a win against Toronto, Montreal slid back into its old ways behind quarterback Rakeem Cato with 330 yards of total offense and 20 points against the Eskimos this past Monday.

The Stampeders have been almost unstoppable during this impressive 12-game SU run and they have also been a financial boon to bettors with nine covers ATS in their last 10 games. They could easily run the table heading into the playoffs with games against Toronto and Montreal left on the slate before a Week 20 bye. Calgary has been scoring points at a high rate all season long but it has taken things up a notch or two with an average of 41.2 points over its last six games.

        Betting Trends

This will be the first meeting this season and the home team in this inter-division tilt has won the last five meetings SU with Montreal covering ATS in the last three games. The total has stayed UNDER in five of the last six meetings overall.

CFL INSIGHTS: THE ‘BIGGEST’ REASON BEHIND CALGARY’S SUCCESS

CALGARY — The secret to Calgary’s 13-1-1 record this season? Well, there are many.

There’s the production from Bo Levi Mitchell and his receivers . . . the league-low 20 giveaways . . . even the discipline — the Stamps rank second in the league with only 120 penalties.

The one thing you can’t miss, quite literally, is the Stamps’ O-line. That five-man unit, whoever is starting on a given day, is the biggest and best in the CFL and has played a leading role in the Stampeders’ success this season.

While Mitchell heads towards his first Most Outstanding Player honour and Dave Dickenson likely follows suit with a coach of the year award in his first season in charge, the work of the Stamps’ O-line hasn’t gone unnoticed.

It’s that group that has kept Mitchell standing while allowing him to throw 4,871 yards and a league-leading 29 touchdown passes, all while being sacked just once every 40.1 dropbacks:

While Mitchell has had an easy time in the pocket, Calgary’s O-line has also paved the way for the league’s leading rusher in Jerome Messam (1,002 yards).

Part of it has to do with its size. At an average height of 6-foot-5 and a weight of 331 pounds, Calgary’s offensive line is by far the biggest and most powerful in the league.

The average CFL O-line weighs an average of 311.6 pounds — nearly five pounds fewer than the lightest member of the Stamps’ O-line, Dan Federkeil at 316 pounds.

Four of five starters on the Stamps’ O-line in Week 16 weigh more than 320 pounds. The Bombers are the only other team with multiple players weighing more than 320 pounds, and they only have two.

In 1999, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats set the record with seven sacks allowed throughout 18 games. Danny McManus was the quarterback then and you can bet he wasn’t escaping pressure with his legs. No, McManus couldn’t be touched in the pocket and the Ticats won the Grey Cup as a result.

If teams can’t touch Bo Levi Mitchell then Mitchell won’t be stopped and neither will the Stampeders. And with an O-line that’s been able to survive injury and still dominate opponents on a weekly basis, don’t count on that happening any time soon.

-- Underdogs went 4-0 ATS in Week 17

-- Road teams posted a 3-1 SU record in Week 17

-- Road teams posted a 4-0 ATS record in Week 17

                        -- The 'Over/under' went 2-2 in Week 17

                        Team Betting Notes

-- Calgary (14-1-1) rolled to a 22-8 victory against visiting Montreal (4-11), but the Stampeders failed to cover a 15 1/2-point number. It is noteworthy, as the Stampeders entered 9-1 ATS in the previous 10, and 12-2 ATS in their previous 14, entering play. The 'under' was a bit of a rarity, too, as the 'over' was 5-1 in the previous six games heading into Saturday's game.

-- The Alouettes are just playing out the string, but they are making bettors happy at the window lately. Montreal has covered three of their past four games, and they're also 3-1 ATS in their past four games on the road.

-- Ottawa (7-7-1) clawed back to .500 with a 30-29 shootout in Hamilton (6-9) to keep the Tiger-Cats at arm's length in the East Division. The two sides will do battle again next Saturday in Canada's capital city. Hamilton failed to cover for the fifth consecutive game, and they're 2-8 ATS in their past 10 games dating back to late July.

-- The RedBlacks improved to 5-3 SU/ATS in eight games on the road this season, and that type of work might serve them well heading into the postseason since they're likely to be on the road as long as they're alive.

-- The amazing late-season run for Saskatchewan (5-10) continues, as the Roughriders won for the fourth consecutive game. They're 4-0 ATS in each of their past four outings, and they're 6-0-1 ATS in the past seven. They're also 3-0-1 ATS in their past four games on the road.

-- Toronto (5-11) lost for the fifth consecutive time against the Roughriders, and they're 0-5 ATS during the span. The Argonauts have also covered just once in the past 10 games since opening 4-2 ATS in their first six.

-- Winnipeg (10-6) completed the home-and-home sweep against BC Lions (9-6) to move into second place in the West Division. After opening the season 9-2 ATS in the first 11 games, the Lions are 1-3 ATS over the past four outings.

-- The Blue Bombers sail into a bye week, and bettors will be sad to see them go. The Bombers are 4-1 ATS over the past five games, and 8-2-1 ATS over the past 11 games. Winnipeg has been tremendous on totals, too, as the 'over' is 5-0 in the past five and 8-1 over the past nine.

                        • CFL Betting Notes - Week 18
                          October 17, 2016

The Ottawa RedBlacks took a key step towards winning another East Division title with this past Friday’s tight 30-29 victory against second-place Hamilton as a 2 ½-point road underdog.

In Friday’s other CFL game, Winnipeg moved into second place in the West Division with a 35-32 win at British Columbia as a 5 ½-point underdog on the road.

Saturday’s action started with Saskatchewan extending its current winning streak to four games in a 29-11 romp against Toronto in a game that closed as a pick 'em.

Calgary kept its extended winning streak alive with a 22-8 victory at home against Montreal, but it could not cover the hefty 15 ½-point spread.

                          Friday, Oct. 21

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-9 SU, 5-10 ATS) vs. Ottawa RedBlacks (7-7-1 SU, 6-9 ATS)
                          Point-spread: Ottawa -3
                          Total: 53 ½

                          Game Overview

Another loss to Ottawa this Friday would but a serious dent in the Tiger-Cats’ postseason plans, but they have been on a downward spiral since early September with just one straight-up win in their last five games while going a costly 0-5 against the spread. In last Friday’s loss, Jeremiah Masoli completed 25-of-32 attempts for 278 yards and three scores in place of an injured Zach Collaros, but he was also picked off twice.

Ottawa has not been all that much better in the second half of the season with just its third win in its last eight contests both SU and ATS. The one big positive in the RedBacks series opener of this home-and-home East Division clash was the play of veteran signal-caller Henry Burris. He completed 27-of-39 passing attempts for 393 yards and one touchdown throw. His top target in last week’s win was Ernest Jackson with five receptions for 106 yards and that lone score.

                          Betting Trends

With Ottawa winning the first of this home-and-home series it is now a perfect 4-0 both SU and ATS in the last four games between these two division rivals. The total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings between the two.

Toronto Argonauts (5-11 SU, 5-11) vs. Calgary Stampeders (14-1-1 SU, 12-4 ATS)
                          Point-spread: Calgary -18
                          Total: 52 ½

                          Game Overview

Sticking with the losing theme that has plagued the entire East Division over the past two months, last week’s loss to Saskatchewan was the Argonauts’ fifth loss in a row both SU and ATS as part of an extended 1-9 slide (SU and ATS) in their last 10 outings. This offense is now averaging just 22.1 points a game to go along with a defense that has given up an average of 31 points to its opponents.

The only thing that can stop the incredible roll that Calgary has been on since Week 5 of the season is the Stampeders themselves. They have long since locked up the top seed in the playoffs and with a bye in Week 20, it remains to be seen how they will approach their last two regular season games this week against Toronto and next week against Montreal as far as resting their starters. The 22 points against the Alouettes last week was Calgary’s lowest scoring output since mid-August.

                          Betting Trends

Calgary has won the last five meetings SU including a 48-20 victory on Oct. 10 as a 9 ½-point road favorite. It also has a slight 3-2 edge ATS with the total staying UNDER in three of those five games.

                          Saturday, Oct. 22

Montreal Alouettes (4-11 SU, 6-9 ATS) vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-10, 9-6 ATS)
                          Point-spread: Saskatchewan -7
                          Total: 49 ½

                          Game Overview

Both of these teams are at the bottom of their respective division standings, but there is a vast difference with how Montreal has been playing verse the sudden turnaround with the Roughriders. Give credit to the Alouettes for holding Calgary to just 22 points, but they still have an offense that has not scored more than 20 points in five of its last seven games. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in four of their last six contests.

Saskatchewan is suddenly back in the playoff picture as a possible crossover team from the West with this unexpected four-game winning streak. It has now covered in its last seven games and the total has stayed UNDER in four of its last five outings. During this four-game run, the Roughriders has scored an average of 26.8 points a game as opposed to a season average of 20.8 points that is the lowest in the CFL.

                          Betting Trends

Montreal won the first meeting this season 41-3 back on July 29 as a two-point home favorite. The Alouettes have covered ATS in seven of their last nine games against Saskatchewan and the total has gone OVER in three of the last four meetings.

Edmonton Eskimos (8-7 SU, 6-8-1 ATS) vs. British Columbia Lions (9-6 SU, 10-5 ATS)
                          Point-spread: BC -2 ½
                          Total: 59

                          Game Overview

The Eskimos come off a bye week with a three-game winning streak (SU and ATS) that started with a home victory against BC. The total has gone OVER in six of their last eight games. Edmonton never had a problem putting points on the board this season behind quarterback Mike Reilly. He is now second in the league in both passing yards (5,054) and passing touchdowns (25). The Eskimos’ defense has been the weak spot with a points-allowed average of 28.1.

The recent sweep at the hands of Winnipeg has to be of some concern to a team that had won four of its previous five games both SU and ATS. Both losses were by a combined five points so the gap with the next best team in the West is probably not that wide. After throwing for 422 yards in the first loss to the Blue Bombers, Jonathon Jennings completed 22-of-29 attempts for 327 yards and two scores, but he was also picked off three times in last week’s loss.

                          Betting Trends

Edmonton has won the last three matchups in this bitter division rivalry SU, but BC has a 3-1 edge ATS over the last four meetings. The total stayed UNDER 54 ½ points in the Eskimos’ 27-23 win against BC on Sept. 23 in a game that closed as a PICK. The total had gone OVER in the three previous meetings.
