Three of last four Montreal games went over total. Hamilton lost four of last six games, but scored 49-53 points in winning its last two home games; they’re 2-2 as home favorites. Over is 3-1-1 in last five Hamilton games. TiCats won four of last five series games, whacking Als 31-7 in Montreal in first meeting July 15. Alouettes’ win here LY snapped their 10-game skid in Hamilton. Under is 8-2 in last ten series games.

TICATS SET FOR EAST DIVISION SHOWDOWN WITH ALS

HAMILTON — As the 2016 season moves further onto the back nine, the playoff contenders have, for the most part, separated themselves from the dead weight.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are still very much somewhere in the middle. Sitting one game below .500 and one point out of first place in the tight East Division, the Tabbies are neither outsiders nor insiders entering this Friday’s matchup against the visiting Montreal Alouettes.

At 3-8 and at least a pair of wins out of a playoff spot, the Als are widely seen as the dead weight in the East — a prevailing idea that won’t be helped by reports of disharmony within Montreal camp this week.

Both teams will see Friday’s ballgame as a must-win affair; the Als can’t afford to fall any further out of the East playoff picture with games beginning to run out quickly, while the Tabbies must secure the win against their troubled and statistically-inferior visitors.

Things haven’t exactly been coming up roses in Montreal this week.

Amidst reports of a locker-room divide and the trading away of veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn to Winnipeg, news broke late in the week of a skirmish between receiver Duron Carter and new starting quarterback Rakeem Cato.

Reported personal issues aside, the Alouettes have a job to do: Claw back into the East Division’s playoff picture.

Montreal’s lost three dispiriting ballgames since its 43-19 statement win in Ottawa in Week 9, and been outscored 89-59 in those contests.

This week won’t be any easier for an Als defence which allowed nearly 600 yards of offence in last week’s loss on the left coast.

“Hamilton’s led by their quarterback Zach Collaros,” Montreal defensive coordinator Noel Thorpe told MontrealAlouettes.com. “He is really back to right where he left off before he got injured last year, doing an excellent job of distributing the ball to his talented receiving corps.”

And what a receiving corps it is.

Playmaker Jovon Johnson and the rest of the Als secondary will have their hands full against the Ticats’ receivers.

“With Luke Tasker, Andy Fantuz, Chad Owens, Terrence Toliver and Brandon Banks, their offensive unit posseses a lot of speed and talent,” admitted Thorpe, whose defence began the year well but has given up 30-plus points in two of its last three outings.

Cato will take the reins under centre for Montreal following the trade of Kevin Glenn to Winnipeg earlier this week; the Marshall product has made two starts and thrown for 520 yards and two touchdowns thus far in 2016.

“Orlando Steinauer, the Ticats defensive coordinator, will give us some real challenges by using different defensive looks — they aren’t the norm,” predicted Als offensive coordinator Anthony Calvillo. “They also have excellent defensive backs and, from my perspective, the core of their defence revolves around their defensive line.”

With noted return men Stefan Logan and Brandon Banks lining up for Montreal and Hamilton respectively, special teams could play a huge factor on Friday night.

“We’re facing one of the best ball returners in league history in Brandon Banks,” said Als special teams coordinator Kavis Reed. “He has three touchdowns already this season, and we’re going to have to do some really good work to keep him contained.”

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are far from happy with their 5-6 record.

Kent Austin’s Tabbies team also knows that this week’s game against the out-of-sorts Montreal Alouettes is far from a gimme.

“If you’re not well-prepared, not ready to play and don’t execute, it’s dangerous,” Austin told Ticats.ca. “It’s pretty simple — the team that makes the most plays and fewest mistakes typically wins.”

As for sitting a point behind the Ottawa REDBLACKS for first in the East Division with an extra game played, Austin knows his team has to be sharp down the stretch.

“Every game’s a must-win — this one really is — because if you’re waiting for later in the season for the must-win games, that means you didn’t (win) the must-wins earlier,” explained the Ticats head coach. “We go out there to win every football game.”

The last time the two teams met, the Tabbies managed to sack Montreal quarterback Cato eight times en route to a 31-7 win in Week 4.

“He’s a pretty elusive player (who) can move the sticks with his feet and extend plays,” said Austin. “We’re going to have to be really solid in how we rush him (and) not allowing him to extend drives with his feet — it’s a challenge for us up front.”

Hamilton’s defensive backs will be tasked with shutting down Montreal’s dangerous one-two receiving punch of Duron Carter and B.J. Cunningham.

“We’ve got enough guys out there,” said defensive back Cassius Vaughn. “We’ve got leaders like Emanuel Davis and Courtney (Stephen): I’m gonna follow them, we’re gonna lock it down — it’s time for us to go up and show what we can do.”

As for the threat Cato poses, Vaughn — an Ole Miss alum — knows the gameplan will be similar to last week’s.

“Cato’s the complete package. He’s way more athletic (than Dan LeFevour), his arm is a lot livelier — knowing him from his Marshall days, he can’t be taken lightly,” said Vaughn. “Being below .500 (is) not acceptable for Ticat football. We gotta go into this game and take care of business.”

The Skinny

Understand this: Neither the Ticats nor Alouettes are happy with where they stand in the clutter of the East Division playoff race. Both teams have veterans that understand the importance of stepping up for fall football.

Hamilton knows it could have shared or full possession of first place in the East by the end of the weekend if the Tabbies can take care of business against the labouring Als.

Montreal just straight-up needs a W, and Jim Popp and co. will be hoping Rakeem Cato is up to the task.

Should be a fun one on Friday at Tim Hortons Field.

TICATS OUTLAST ALOUETTES IN DEFENSIVE DUEL; TAKE HALL OF FAME GAME 20-17

HAMILTON – Halfback Emanuel Davis led the way for the Hamilton defence – recording an interception along with two fumble recoveries – helping the Ticats outlast the Alouettes 20-17 in a defensive battle in Hamilton.

All eyes were on Alouettes QB Rakeem Cato in this one, after his altercation with teammates Duron Carter and Kenny Stafford in practice this week.

The Alouettes opened the game’s scoring with a single on a missed field goal from Anthony Fera after a lengthy drive to start the game.

Duron Carter did his best to endear himself to the Montreal faithful after a tumultuous week on the following Tiger-Cats drive, making a rare contribution on special teams. The star receiver raced around the edge untouched on a Hamilton punt, blocking Brett Maher’s kick, then scooping up the ball and fending off the punter en route to the game’s first touchdown.

The block added to a troubling trend for Hamilton, as it was the fourth blocked punt allowed by the Tiger-Cats in their last four games.

The Alouettes defence set the tone early on the road, taking down QB Zack Collaros twice in the opening frame and preventing the Ticats from finding any offensive rhythm. One early bright spot for Hamilton’s offence was rookie RB Ross Scheuerman, who showed some explosive speed out of the backfield in his first career CFL start.

The Tiger-Cats offence showed some life late in the second quarter, thanks in large part to a gutsy call by Head Coach Kent Austin. Facing a third-and-one near midfield, the Ticats elected to throw rather than try to grind out the first down, and Collaros found SB Chad Owens down the right sideline to give Hamilton a first-and-goal.

Collaros then found SB Luke Tasker up the middle on the following play for Hamilton’s first touchdown of the game. Maher’s extra point cut the Alouettes lead to 9-8.

Hamilton would get another chance on offence late in the half, after a pass from Montreal QB Rakeem Cato bounced through the hands of WR B.J. Cunningham and into those of DB Emanuel Davis, who recorded his fourth interception of the season.

Collaros marched his team down the field with big completions to WR Terence Toliver and Tasker, but the drive came to an abrupt halt after LB Bear Woods stretched out for an acrobatic interception in the red zone. Content with a one point lead, Cato and the Alouettes knelt out the clock, heading into the half with a slim 9-8 lead.

The Ticats elected to receive the kickoff to start the second half, and embarked on a lengthy drive which ended in a Maher field goal, giving Hamilton their first lead of the game.

After the ensuing kickoff, Emanuel Davis came up big again on the first play of the Alouettes’ drive, recovering a Nik Lewis fumble to give the Ticats another chance in the Montreal half. Unfortunately for Hamilton, Collaros and the offence were stopped once again, and settled for another Maher field goal to extend their lead to 14-9.

Cato and the Alouettes offence seemed to find a groove following the field goal, stringing together a few positive plays before the turnover bug bit once again. This time it was Cunningham who couldn’t hold onto the ball, and once again Emanuel Davis was Johnny on the spot, recording his third turnover of the game.

The Tiger-Cats were forced to punt it away and the Alouettes scored their first field goal on the following drive, narrowing Hamilton’s lead to just two.

Game Overview

The saga of Ricky Ray’s multiple string of injuries over the past few seasons continued with a fractured rib in Week 11 to pave the way for Dan LeFevour to make his first CFL start in almost two years in last week’s game against the Tiger-Cats. There were no major signs of rust in his performance and he ended the day completing 75 percent of his 36 passes for 329 yards and a score. Kevin Elliott led the way with six catches for 91 yards.

The Blue Bombers keep cruising along with six SU wins in a row, but for the second week they have failed to cover as favorites after winning the first four games as underdogs. None the less, they are now third place in the West behind Calgary and BC. During this impressive run, Winnipeg has averaged 29.6 points a game, while holding its opponents to a total of just 103 points.

Betting Trends

This will be the second meeting this season with Winnipeg holding the early edge as a result of a 34-17 victory on Aug. 12 as a four-point road underdog. Toronto had won the previous three meetings both SU and ATS and the total has now gone OVER in four of the last six meetings in this interdivision clash.

Game Overview

The RedBlacks return to action following last week’s bye and they currently hold a game and half lead over Hamilton and Toronto in the East. Even with a 19-14 win against Montreal in Week 11 as 2 ½-point road favorites, they are still 2-4 SU in their last six games and a costly 1-5 ATS over this same stretch. Trevor Harris has thrown for 2,133 yards and 11 touchdowns while missing some time to injuries and Chris Williams leads the team in receiving yards with 991.

Calgary has the longest SU winning streak in the CFL at eight games and following its home-and-home sweep of Edmonton, it has gone a perfect 6-0 ATS in its last six outings. Things continue to click on both sides of the ball for the CFL’s most complete team. With 338 passing yards and three touchdown throws in last week’s win, Bo Levi Mitchell has now thrown for 3,575 yards and a league-high 20 touchdowns in his first 11 games.

Betting Trends

The Stampeders have a 4-1 edge ATS in the last five meetings after battling Ottawa to a SU 26-26 tie earlier this season as slight 1 ½-point road underdogs. The total ended as a PUSH in that game after going OVER in three of the previous four matchups.

BOMBERS SEEK SEVENTH STRAIGHT WIN VS. LEFEVOUR, ARGOS

WINNIPEG — Aside from the Calgary Stampeders, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are the Canadian Football League’s hottest team.

Six straight wins have pushed Mike O’Shea’s Bombers into both the thick of the dogfight in the upper half of the West Division and the hearts of Winnipegers. At 7-4 and with one of the league’s top defences, the Blue and Gold look primed for a post-season run.

The visitors at Investors Group Field this week, the Toronto Argonauts, are a tough read.

At 5-6, Scott Milanovich’s football team has struggled to find consistency. Despite an inability to build on victories nor address their reoccurring defensive issues, the Argos still find themselves a single win out of first place entering Saturday’s daunting road game in Winnipeg.

To say there’s been some turnover on the Toronto Argonauts roster would be an understatement.

TJ Heath and Keon Raymond — defensive backs who account for 70 per cent of Toronto’s interceptions — are gone via trade. Veteran pivot Ricky Ray was injured and subsequently returned only to be injured again. The team acquired quarterback Drew Willy from Winnipeg this past week in an effort to shore up the quarterback position.

The spot under centre will remain Dan LeFevour’s, at least for this Saturday’s game in Montreal, after the 29 year-old helped Toronto to a 33-21 win over the Ticats last week.

“All I can control is what I can do this week,” LeFevour told Argonauts.ca. “This is my seventh year playing pro ball (and) trades happen, guys come and go. This is no different.”

The Argos’ mobile quarterback knows he’ll be in for a challenge against a Winnipeg defence which leads the league by a mile in interceptions (20).

“It starts with their pass rush, they’ve got a great front four,” admitted LeFevour. “They put pressure on the quarterback, make sacks and force errant throws. We’ve got to do a great job up front, and then from there I have to go through my reads (and) make smart plays.”

The importance of Saturday’s game isn’t lost on the Argos’ newly-minted starter.

“I think at this point, every game is big. We’re 11 games into the season (and) we’ve got seven to go,” he said. “It’s a tight race in the East, so every game is important.”

For Toronto head coach Scott Milanovich, the acquisition of Drew Willy is a long-term solution to the Argos’ uncertainty under centre.

Willy was acquired by the Argos shortly after Sunday night’s win over the Ticats; a trade Argos GM Jim Barker and the Bombers had been working on for a little while.

“If Drew Willy plays at an elite quarterback level for the next six to eight years, people will forget about this,” the Argos’ head coach answered when asked about his new quarterback’s trade price tag. “We’re bringing him in for a reason — there’s no price too high for an elite quarterback.”

With that said, Milanovich also stressed that the ball is firmly in LeFevour’s hands on offence heading into Saturday’s game.

“There’s a chance (Willy plays), but I hope that doesn’t happen — some of our passing concepts are new, and he’ll have to grow into them,” explained Milanovich. “I’m anxious to see Dan win another game tomorrow, that’s all I’m concerned about right now.”

To have success in Winnipeg, the Argos will have to win the battle at the line of scrimmage — something they’ve struggled to do consistently in 2016. Toronto’s defence will need to create pressure against a Bomber offence with the dual-threat, accurate passer in Matt Nichols and versatile running back Andrew Harris.

Shawn Lemon, whose team-high nine sacks place him second in the CFL, could have a key role to play if the Argos are to have success defensively on Saturday.

Winnipeg has taken care of business in recent weeks against the league’s less fortunate in Montreal and Saskatchewan (twice).

Still, consistency is key and complacency can be deadly in the CFL, and the Bombers have navigated the last three weeks and pulled themselves from the muck of the West Division.

One of the keys to Winnipeg’s success on its current run has been running back Harris, who remains a question mark entering Saturday’s game against Toronto.

Harris, a dual-threat back, is banged up and could be replaced by the recently-activated Timothy Flanders if unable to play.

“They’re all hungry to play,” Bomber head coach Mike O’Shea told BlueBombers.com. “Obviously (Andrew) looks after himself well, whatever it is, he’s got the ability to keep going. Pain tolerance.”

The Bombers’ dealing of Drew Willy seemed to solidify the commonly-held truth that Matt Nichols was the only number one quarterback in Winnipeg, with the team’s acquisition of Kevin Glenn from Montreal seen as a move to add veteran depth and an insurance policy.

“In this business, you always have to go out, play well and do (your) job,” said Nichols. “Taking care of the ball, getting the ball in my playmakers’ hands, and winning games — that’s always been my mentality, and (the trade) won’t change that.”

Nichols and the Bombers took care of business the last time the two teams met up in a lopsided 34-17 decision in Ontario. The Argos held a 10-3 lead during the first half but five interceptions by Logan Kilgore — the most forced by a Bomber defence since 2001 — sunk the Boatmen in the end.

“They’ve had some personnel changes (since then), but at the same time it’s Coach Stubler (and) he’s had a lot of success in this league for a long time,” said the Bomber pivot. “You know what to expect defensively — a lot of man-matching, zone — but have to trust your eyes (and) go through your reads.”

Winnipeg’s success has come with the help of the league’s best turnover ratio; the Bombers have taken the ball away a league-best 34 times on defence, and turned the ball over just 16 times — the second-lowest mark in the league.

“Our takeaway-giveaway rate is the best in the league and it’s allowing us to win games,” said Coach O’Shea. “It’s securing the ball, moving up the field when we get the ball off turnovers — those are very valuable yards that the offence is putting up.”

The Skinny

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are favoured for good reason; they’ve won six in a row, have one of the league’s deepest play-making defences, and have simply found ways to get it done over the last month.

Toronto, meanwhile, is handing the ball to Dan LeFevour for his second start of 2016, traded standout defensive back TJ Heath and has been playing .500 football for the last month.

With that said, Andrew Harris will almost certainly be less than 100 per cent for Saturday’s game, which means the Argos will have an opportunity to one-dimensionalize the Winnipeg offence. If Rich Stubler’s Toronto defence can do that, it could be a very entertaining matinee at IGF.

MAGNIFICENT SEVEN: BOMBERS KEEP ROLLING, WIN SEVENTH STRAIGHT

WINNIPEG — For a while, it looked as though the good times had finally come to an end for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

But as we’ve come to learn all season long, never count out the guys in Blue and Gold.

Matt Nichols was solid again, completing 24 of his 33 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown, while Timothy Flanders made sure the ground game didn’t miss a beat, as the Bombers downed the Toronto Argonauts 46-29 Saturday afternoon at Investors Group Field.

Flanders racked up 134 total yards – 102 on the ground and 34 through the air – and a TD in a relief outing for the inured Harris.

The Bombers also received a monstrous performance from kicker Justin Medlock, who nailed all six of his field goal attempts, the longest coming from 53 yards out.

The matchup came less than a week since the two teams completed a blockbuster trade that saw the Bombers ship quarterback Drew Willy to the Argos in exchange for TJ Heath.

It marked the first time since 2001 that the Bombers racked up seven-straight wins.

Having lost his starting job to Nichols following a less-than-stellar start to the season while with the Bombers, Willy would once again play the backup role with his new team, as LeFevour looked to cement his spot as Toronto’s main man under centre.

Last week saw LeFevour stun the CFL world in his first start in nearly two years, completing 75 per cent of his passes for 329 yards and a touchdown in a 33-21 win over the Ticats.

This week, the 29-year-old gunslinger picked up right where he left off, guiding his offence on a five-play, 70-yard drive which was capped off by a six-yard TD strike to Diontae Spencer.

The score gave the Boatmen a 7-3 lead heading into the second quarter.

While LeFevour had no problem creating offence in the early goings, the same couldn’t be said for Nichols, who had some trouble finishing off drives.

Instead of finding the endzone, the Bombers were forced to settle for three points on consecutive drives, as Justin Medlock drilled his second and third field goals of the afternoon to give the home side a 9-7 lead.

That lead, however, was short lived.

Immediately following Medlock’s second connection, LeFevour embarked on an impressive six-play, 90-yard drive, which culminated in a 49-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kenny Shaw, restoring Toronto’s lead.

But on the ensuing kickoff, the Boatmen saw their lead slip away once again, as returner Quincy McDuffie zigged and zagged his way to a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown, pulling the Bombers ahead by two.

The back-and-forth action didn’t stop there, as the Argos quickly went to work in an effort to reclaim the lead once again.

Following a punt single by Hajrullahu to pull the Argos within one, LeFevour continued his strong play, as he connected with Tori Gurley for an 11-yard touchdown.

Melock would then tack on his fourth field of the game, sending the teams into the locker room with the Argos holding onto a 22-19 lead.

The first half saw LeFevour complete 13 of his 18 attempts for 211 yards and three touchdowns. Nichols, meanwhile, was good on 13 of his 21 passes for 123 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions.

The lack of offence for the Bombers could be attributed to the absence of tailback Andrew Harris, who was forced out of action during last week’s game against the Riders with a lower-body injury.

He was replaced Saturday by Timoth Flanders, who picked up a solid 46 yards on seven carries in the opening 30 minutes.

Once the second half got underway, LeFevour continued his afternoon dominance, hooking up with Shaw again for his fourth touchdown pass of the game.

Refusing to back down without a fight, the Bombers began chipping away at Toronto’s 10-point lead, with Medlock splitting the uprights for a fifth time of the game, this time from 46 yards out.

Then, after veteran DB Chris Randle picked off LeFevour, Nichols was finally able to break through offensively – and he wouldn’t need Medlock to finish the job.

Taking over from Toronto’s 51 yard line, Nichols just just five plays to find the endzone, connecting with Clarence Denmark for a 15-yard touchdown to tie things up at 29.

The touchdown must have injected a surge of confidence into Nichols and the Bombers offence, as they made quick work of the Argos defence on their next possession.

Nichols marched his unit 82 yards downfield on 10 plays, with Flanders finding the endzone on a two-yard scamper to give the Blue and Goold a seven-point lead.

Winnipeg would then tack on another touchdown, with Nichols punching it in from one-yard out to extend their lead to 14.

Medlock then picked up his sixth field goal of the game to extend the home team’s lead to 17.

Next week, the Bombers travel to Calgary to face the Stampeders, while the Argos head to Ottawa to face the REDBLACKS.

STREAKING STAMPS: CALGARY DOWNS OTTAWA FOR NINTH STRAIGHT WIN

CALGARY — They’ve done it again.

The Calgary Stampeders extended their winning streak to nine on Saturday, defeating the Ottawa REDBLACKS 48-23.

The Stamps scored 30 points in the first quarter and despite a valiant effort from the REDBLACKS’ defence in the third quarter, came away with the victory improving their record to 10-1-1.

Marquay McDaniel led the Stamps receiving corps, catching five passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. Jerome Messam led the ground game with 11 carries for 35 yards and a touchdown and had two catches for 37 yards through the air.

Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 353 yards, connecting on 23-of-25 of his passes and two touchdowns. His counter part, Trevor Harris connected on 17-of-29 passes for 289 yards, two touchdowns and one interception

The Stampeders held Ottawa to a two-and-out on their first possession, forcing Sergio Castillo to punt the ball. His 90-yard punt went over the head of Roy Finch, through the end zone and out of bounds, giving the REDBLACKS a single point early in the contest.

But it was Calgary that wasted no time to score the game’s first major.

On the Stamps’ first possession of the contest, Mitchell escaped the pocket and tossed a 50-yard bomb to Bakari Grant to bring the Stamps inside the Ottawa 10-yard line. The Calgary pivot then looked to Grant again, who caught another pass to bring Calgary to first-and-goal.

Andrew Buckley ran the ball one-yard into the end zone to score the game’s first touchdown capping off a seven play, 75-yard drive. Mitchell looked for McDaniel in the end zone for the two-point convert but McDaniel was covered and couldn’t make the catch and the Stamps’ held a 6-1 lead with 10:12 left in the first quarter.

The REDBLACKS pulled themselves within two, capping a 10 play, 37-yard drive when Chris Milo kicked a 48-yard field goal cutting the Stamps’ lead to 6-4.

After a time count violation penalty pushed the Stamps back to a second-and-ten, Mitchell kept calm and tossed a 24-yard pass to McDaniel who stretched out to score Calgary’s second major of the ball game. The eight play, 80-yard drive was led by a 32-yard pass to Messam to bring Calgary into Ottawa territory.

The Stamps’ tried again for a two-point convert, but was unsuccessful for the second time in the contest and held a 12-4 lead with just under two minutes left in the first quarter.

On their next drive, the REDBLACKS trotted down the field to set up a 46-yard Milo field goal to respond to the Stampeders’ touchdown. Calgary held a 12-7 lead to end the first 15 minutes of the game.

Messam scored his league-leading eighth rushing touchdown of the season to start the second quarter to cap a six play, 78-yard drive. The score was the third major for the Stamps on their third possession of the game.

On Calgary’s third attempt at a two-point convert, Mitchell successfully connected with McDaniel to extend their lead to 20-7 with 12-27 left in the first half.

And on their next possession, Ottawa struck back to counter Calgary’s major with one of their own.

Capping a six play, 86-yard drive down the field, Harris tossed a 36-yard pass to Ernest Jackson who ran into the end zone for Ottawa’s first touchdown of the ball game. With the score, Jackson now has scored touchdowns in six straight games, just one shy of the REDBLACKS’ club record of seven held by Tony Gabriel. Along with the touchdown, Jackson ended the afternoon with four receptions for 93 yards.

Milo connected on his 32-yard field goal, cutting the Stamps’ lead to 20-14 with 9:04 left in the second quarter.

For the first time of the afternoon, the REDBLACKS’ defence held Calgary off the scoreboard, bringing Harris and his offence back onto the gridiron.

Rene Paredes kicked his first field goal of the afternoon, making the 40-yarder and extending his team’s lead to 23-14 with 3:28 left in the first half.

When Ottawa got the ball back, Jamar Wall intercepted a Harris pass, his third interception in three games, and brought it back 60-yards to add another major score for the Stamps. The interception was Harris’ second of the season and first in his last 150 attempts. Paredes made the point after to give the Stamps a 30-14 lead.

After an unsuccessful drive down the field by the REDBLACKS in the final minutes of the half, Calgary took a 16-point lead to the locker room.

Starting the second half, both team’s defences came out strong. With almost three minutes into the quarter, both teams exchanged two-and-outs, keeping the score 30-14.

Maver’s 43-yard punt that just barely went out of bounds gave Ottawa a long field to work starting on their own two-yard line but Harris was up for the challenge. The Ottawa pivot tossed a 41-yard pass to Jackson to start the drive. Then, an objectionable conduct penalty against Calgary brought Ottawa even futher down the field to their own 54-yard line. But, it was all for naught, after Charleston Hughes sacked Harris and forced Castillo to punt the ball away.

After giving up 30 points in the first half, the Ottawa defence came out strong in the third quarter, shutting down the Stamps for five straight possession and in turn completely holding them off the scoreboard.

Just as the third quarter was ending, Harris led his team down the field and found Greg Ellingson near the back of the end zone for the major score. The four-yard touchdown was Ellingson’s first in his last eight games.

With the two point convert unsuccessful, the Stamps still held a 30-20 lead to start the final quarter.

Maver punted the ball into the end zone to add a single point to Calgary’s lead.

On the REDBLACKS’ next possession, Harris threw a 63-yard pass to Ellingson to bring Ottawa inside the Calgary 10-yard line. Harris tried to find Juron Criner in the end zone, but the ball fell out of Criner’s hands forcing Milo to kick a 15-yard field goal, cutting the Stamps’ lead to eight (31-24).

With just over six minutes left in the contest, Mitchell and his offence started rolling down the field bringing the Stamps’ into the scoring position.

DaVaris Daniels caught a pass from Mitchell with one hand, and kept it under control, just before stepping out of bounds to add another major score, and following the point after, the Stamps led 38-23.

The REDBLACKS’ had possession of the ball, but Harris was sacked and Ja’gared Davis scooped it up and ran it to the end zone for Calgary’s second defensive touchdown of the afternoon and after the convert kick was good, gave Calgary a 45-23 lead.

Paredes kicked a 30-yard field goal with just over minute left in the game, extending the lead to 48-23 and the Stampeders kept their winning streak rolling.

Ottawa hopes to turn things around when it hosts Dan LeFevour and the Toronto Argonauts in Week 14 while the Stampeders look to snap the Blue Bombers winning streak at McMahon Stadium.

Game Overview

The defending champs have once again fallen below .500 with last week’s loss and the Eskimos have now failed to cover in their last three games. The total went OVER 55 in the Week 12 loss to Calgary and it has gone OVER in Edmonton’s last four contests. This team continues to find the end zone at a clip of 29.5 points a game, but the Eskimos’ defense has been torched all season long with a matching points-allowed average of 29.6.

The Roughriders would probably opt to call it quits right now if given the chance, but they have been a decent betting team lately with three covers in a row. The one bright spot has been the play of veteran quarterback Darian Durant in one losing cause after another. Last week against Calgary, he completed 64 percent of his passes for 283 yards and a touchdown. On the year, he is fifth in the CFL in total passing yards with 2,476.

Betting Trends

This will be the third meeting this season in this bitter West Division rivalry. Edmonton has won the first two games SU, but the Roughriders have been able to cover as heavy road underdogs each time. Going back over the past 10 meetings, the Eskimos have an 8-2 edge SU with a 7-3 record ATS. The total has gone OVER in the last three games.
