Dodgers' SS Hanley Ramirez, questionable Wednesday

Ramirez left Tuesday's game after suffering a contusion on the ring finger of his right hand. He is questionable for Wednesday's game against the Rockies.

Braves' OF Justin Upton, questionable Wednesday

Upton left Tuesday's game because of dizziness. He is questionable for Wednesday against the Phillies.

Samardzija available for trade, despite Cubs’ offer

Despite making a final run at a contract extension with ace Jeff Samardzija, the Cubs continue to make it clear to teams looking for pitching that he is available in trade. Officials from four teams said this week the Cubs have told other teams that Samardzija and pitcher Jason Hammel are available, with two saying they’ve heard no indication the Cubs believe their recent contract proposal will be accepted by Samardzija.

What trend was hot on the diamond Tuesday night?

Underdogs had a solid showing against the runline in Major League baseball action Tuesday night. Dogs put up a 10-5 record against the runline last night, good for a success rate of almost 67 percent. Underdogs are still hitting at just over 60 percent for the season against the runline.

Cliff Lee throws off mound, eyes July return

Cliff Lee says he has made excellent strides in his recovery from an elbow strain over the last few days. The left-hander was able throw from a bullpen mound Tuesday for the first time since going on the disabled list and he was pleased with the results.

Lee will be evaluated Wednesday to see how he bounces back from Tuesday’s session. If all goes well, he will continue to throw bullpens in the coming days.

Lee is confident he could be back by the all-star break. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has indicated that Lee could be back around the Fourth of July.

Once he returns, Lee will help the Phillies try to get into contention in July while at the same time auditioning for clubs that may need a starter.

Pirates' Walker on pace to return soon

Neil Walker is itching to come off the disabled list.

The Pirates second baseman took batting practice Tuesday for the first time since undergoing an appendectomy June 9 and also fielding ground balls. Walker was given the go-ahead by doctors after being examined Tuesday morning.

"There is nothing that I could do -- swinging, torqueing, running -- that's going to bother it," Walker said.

Walker believes he will be ready to be activated June 24, the first day he is eligible. He had already been hitting the indoors cages and running before Tuesday's more strenuous workout.

Giants' Pagan remains out with back issue

Outfielder Angel Pagan remained sidelined with back stiffness as the San Francisco Giants opened a two-game inter-league series against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

Pagan missed his third straight game and recovery is going slower than hoped, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said prior to the game at U.S. Cellular Field.

"Right now he's a day-to-day," Bochy said. "He's making a little progress but not as much as we'd have hoped."

The 32-year-old veteran was batting .307 through 63 games before sitting out the final two games of a series with Colorado.

Tigers plan to limit Verlander's innings

Justin Verlander's workload might be reduced for the time being, even if it temporarily strains his relationship with manager Brad Ausmus.

The Tigers' struggling ace has given up seven runs in each of his last two starts and at least five runs in six of his last seven outings. Ausmus plans to limit Verlander's innings in his upcoming starts, beginning with his outing in Cleveland on Saturday night.

Ausmus knows Verlander might not agree with those tactics. Ausmus has given Verlander a long leash despite the torrent of base hits -- 111 in 97 2/3 innings -- and runs that Verlander has allowed. His 97-pitch outing against Kansas City on Monday was the first time this season he didn't reach triple digits in pitches.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Simon sizzling on the road
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Tanaka a Top-3 Option

Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka continued his impressive start to his major-league career, improving to 11-1 with six innings of 10-strikeout ball in a 3-1 win over Toronto. Tanaka ranks third in the majors in value at $876, behind only Minnesota's Phil Hughes ($950) and Oakland's Scott Kazmir ($882).

              Phillies (Finally) Pay Off

Philadelphia (+167) ended a long run of disappointing showings as a big underdog, cruising past host Atlanta 5-2 Tuesday night. The Phillies had dropped five consecutive games as a dog of +150 or greater, and scored a combined seven runs in those contests.

              Simon Says: Follow the Trends

Alfredo Simon has been one of the most pleasant surprises in the betting world to date. The Cincinnati pitcher is 10-3 against the moneyline and 3-10 O/U as he and the Reds (+106, 7.5) visit Pittsburgh; he is also a sizzling 6-1 SU and 1-6 O/U in seven starts as a road underdog.

              Pitching Notes

              * Beware Toronto starter Mark Buehrle, who leads the Blue Jays (-105, 8.5) into a rare favorite role at Yankee Stadium. Buehrle is just 1-10 with a 6.02 ERA in 16 career starts against New York, which has won 24 of its last 27 home games versus the Blue Jays.

              * Don't expect many home runs with Felix Hernandez on the mound. The Seattle ace enters Wednesday's interleague tilt with host San Diego (+116, 6) having gone 10 starts without allowing a longball - a dizzying stretch of 72 2/3 innings - and has surrendered just three all season.

              Hitting Notes

              * Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout homered twice in Tuesday's 9-3 victory over Cleveland and is batting .380 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in 50 June at-bats. Despite the surge, the Angels are just 7-6 SU for the month entering Wednesday's tilt with the Indians (+110, 8.5).

              * Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy belted a pair of homers and had five RBIs in Tuesday's 7-5 triumph in Arizona. Lucroy is batting a scorching .397 with six homers so far in June, helping the Brewers to a 10-6 record for the month entering Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks (+102, 9).

              Totals Streak

Toronto Blue Jays (0-10-1 O/U): The beat goes on for the Blue Jays, who have scored two runs or fewer in seven of their last 10 games - and unsurprisingly, lost all seven. The Blue Jays are now 34-35-3 O/U for the season.

              Prop of the Day

Taking either the Mariners (+450) or Padres (+325) to win by exactly one run is a strong bet Wednesday, with both Hernandez and Padres counterpart Andrew Cashner among the stingiest pitchers in the majors and neither lineup considered a major threat. Expect a close, low-scoring affair.

              Injury Notes

              * The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to activate center fielder Colby Rasmus (hamstring) from the 15-day disabled list Wednesday. The Blue Jays went 22-11 against the moneyline, 10-21-2 O/U and won 1,023 units with Rasmus on the sidelines, but have dropped seven of their last 10.

              * Arizona right-hander Bronson Arroyo has been diagnosed with a sprained UCL in his right elbow and will be shut down for the next 10 days. Arroyo had pitched through pain for the last few weeks but showed no ill effects, reeling off three straight wins to move up to 35th in pitcher value ($+276).

              Weather Watch

              * Wind at Fenway Park will be blowing from left to right field at a robust 14 mph for Wednesday afternoon's game between the host Boston Red Sox (-166, 8.5) and the Minnesota Twins. Teams averaged a combined 10 runs and batted .269 in eight games under similar conditions in 2013.

              * Busch Stadium will see wind blowing out to center field at 10 mph when the host St. Louis Cardinals (-155, 7.5) face the New York Mets. The Cardinals went 7-2 while averaging a whopping 6.22 runs under similar conditions a season ago.

              Umpire Note of the Day

The home team is 7-0 in umpire D.J. Reyburn's last seven games behind home plate. Reyburn will call the balls and strikes Wednesday as the visiting Kansas City Royals (+123, 9) look to extend their winning streak to 10 games against Detroit.

Must read weather notes for today's afternoon games

With eight afternoon games in the majors Wednesday there is plenty of weather to go along with it.

At Comerica Park in Detroit, the Tigers host the Kansas City Royals with a 76 percent chance of rain and expected thunderstorms in the area. There will also be a seven mph wind blowing in from left field.

The Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox will have to deal with a strong wind at Fenway Park. A 15 mph wind will blow from third to first during the game.

In St. Louis, the Cardinals host the New York Mets at Busch Stadium, where there is a chance of thunderstorms and a 19 percent chance of rain. There will also be a 10 mph wind blowing out to left field.

At U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago the White Sox host the San Francisco Giants, with a 50 percent chance of rain and a chance of thunderstorms in the forecast.

                  • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Royals 11, Tigers 4-- Kansas City beats Verlander/Scherzer on consecutive nites, has won nine games in a row, is now in first place in AL Central.

-- Blue Jays lost 3-1, have now lost their last 14 games in the Bronx.

-- Marist hires Mike Maker as head coach; he made two D-III Final Fours when he coached at Williams; his is a similar background that Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan came from, when he jumped from D-III to Milwaukee.

-- A's pitcher Drew Pomeranz lands on DL with broken right hand after punching a wooden chair after his dismal performance Monday night. No bueno.

-- Houston Texans named Ryan Fitzpatrick their starting QB; not sure why you do that on June 17, but they did it.

-- Mike Trout homered twice as the Angels ended Cleveland's home winning streak at ten games.

                    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

                    13) What if Lebron James woke up tomorrow and decided he wanted to be a Milwaukee Buck? He already has all the money he needs and then some, so he could go anywhere he wants and the team would be really good, since other free agents would follow, for the chance to win a title. He’s more likely to wake up and decide he wants to be a Laker or play in New York, but his decision this summer with a be a domino that falls before almost any of the other ones can.

                    12) Miami Marlins brought up pitching prospects DeSclafani and Heaney Monday; they’ve deemed themselves contenders and are going for it. Then they went out and lost at home in 13 innings to the Cubs, when pitcher Travis Wood knocked in the game-winning run with an opposite field pinch-hit. Wood’s hit was the first by a Cub pitcher in a game he didn’t pitch since 1950.

                    11) Eric Musselman moves from Arizona State to LSU as an assistant; not sure why he can’t get a head coaching job—he’s been an NBA head coach already.

                    10) Glad to hear that Derrick Rose is healthy enough to play for Team USA this summer; wonder how his employers in Chicago feel about that? They’ve paid him $34M+ over the past two years and he’s played a total of 10 games—not exactly a healthy return on their investment. They need him healthy in January, not July.

                    9) Underrated stat: team’s record in starts by a pitcher, as opposed to a starting pitcher’s personal won-lost record. By way of example, Cole Hamels pitched great his last two starts, but didn’t get a decision in either game, both won by the Phils’ bullpen. I’d rather know what Philly’s record is in all of his starts than his personal W-L record, which is skewed by bad offensive support or a lousy bullpen.

                    8) Airfares in May went up the most they’ve gone up in one month over the last 15 years. Glad I already have my tickets for my next two vacations.

                    7) It was good to see Bill Russell smiling on TV Sunday night; seems like he enjoys watching the Spurs play, their team-oriented concept probably reminds Russell of his playing days in Boston.

                    6) All of which reminds me of the night before Thanksgiving, 1975, when I was 15 and in Boston to watch a Seattle-Celtic game because Sonics’ center Tom Burleson was my favorite player. At halftime, I go behind the Seattle bench, tap Burleson on the shoulder and ask him for his autograph.

He politely declined, at about the same time Russell looked up from his stat sheet and gave me a death stare. I mean, if looks could kill, I would’ve been buried behind the Sonics’ bench that night. Glad to see he’s cheered up some.

                    5) Pitt Panthers hired assistant coach Marion Williamson away from UMass; he was an AAU coach in Detroit before hooking on with UMass, so he has recruiting connections in the talent-rich Motor City area.

                    4) San Diego Padres are 22-4 when they score 4+ runs, which is great; problem is, they’ve played 71 games and are 7-38 when they score less than four runs. Nothing more depressing than a bad team that can’t hit.

                    3) Guard Nick Faust transfers from Maryland to Long Beach State, where he figures to be a damn good player; Big West is a few notches down the food chain from the ACC.

                    2) I listened to people complain about our lousy weather all winter, which is fine, because it was lousy, but now a lot of those same people are complaining because it is too hot out. Enough already; there is no such thing as weather being too nice. Not everyone lives in San Diego, where it is 72 and sunny every day.

                    1) Vin Scully told a great story Monday night about when the Dodgers traded Don Newcombe to the Reds in 1958; Newcombe had been a really good pitcher but he had arm trouble late in his career, as most pitchers do.

He was 0-6 when LA traded him; the trainer in Cincinnati asked Newcombe if he could put ice on the pitcher’s shoulder after his next start, a treatment that was never previously done in baseball. Newcome’s arm felt better, he went on a 7-game winning streak; icing a pitcher’s arm became a baseball necessity. Excellent story.

                      • Thursday's Tip Sheet

                        June 19, 2014

Braves at Nationals – 7:05 PM EST

                        Probable Pitchers:
                        ATL: Floyd (1-2, 2.98 ERA)
                        WSH: Zimmermann (5-3, 2.98 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Braves head to the Nation’s Capital after getting swept at home by the Phillies, while losing 4.9 units in the process. Atlanta’s pitching was lit up, allowing 21 runs to Philadelphia, while giving up at least five runs in seven of the past nine contests. The Nationals rallied to knock off the Astros, 6-5 to cash as -175 home favorites, improving to 7-1 in the last eight home contests.

What to watch for: This series has been owned by the Braves in 2014, as Atlanta is 5-1 in the first six matchups, including a three-game sweep at Turner Field in April. The Nationals have won five of their past seven home series openers, while Zimmermann has yielded just one run in the previous three trips to the mound.

Blue Jays at Yankees – 7:05 PM EST

                        Probable Pitchers:
                        TOR: Hutchison (5-4, 3.62 ERA)
                        NYY: Phelps (2-4, 4.32)

Series recap: The Yankees continued their dominance of the Blue Jays at home, beating Toronto for the 15th straight time in the Bronx in last night’s 7-3 rout. New York has knocked off Toronto five of seven times overall this season, while limiting the Jays’ offense to just four runs through the first two games of this series.

What to watch for: Thanks to a late surge by the Yankees on Wednesday, the Jays saw their 10-0-1 ‘under’ stretch come to a close as the ‘over’ of 9 barely hit. Toronto hasn’t been swept on the road this season, posting a 2-0 record when trying to avoid a sweep with wins at Kansas City and Pittsburgh. The Yankees have not pulled off a home sweep this season in a series of at least three games, but the Bombers are 6-3 in their last nine home contests against division foes.

Mets at Marlins – 7:10 PM EST

                        Probable Pitchers:
                        NYM: Wheeler (2-7, 4.38 ERA)
                        MIA: Heaney (ML Debut)

Previous series recap: The Mets held off the Cardinals on Wednesday, 3-2 to avoid a sweep at Busch Stadium, while snapping an eight-game road skid. The Marlins dropped two of three games at home to the Cubs, as Miami’s pitching allowed 16 runs in this series. Following a strong start to the season at home, Miami has stumbled to a 4-8 record in the past 12 games at Marlins Park.

What to watch for: The last time these teams met up in May, the Marlins pulled off a three-game sweep of the Mets, as New York failed to score a run in the final two losses. Miami hasn’t started hot in a series recently, posting a 3-8 record in the past 11 Game 1’s. The Mets have dropped five of Wheeler’s last six starts, but the right-hander has split a pair of outings against the Marlins this season.

Astros at Rays – 7:10 PM EST

                        Probable Pitchers:
                        HOU: McHugh (4-4, 3.03 ERA)
                        TAM: Archer (3-4, 3.40 ERA)

Previous series recap: Both teams are coming off series losses, as the Rays’ offense hit the wall again in a 2-0 defeat to the Orioles on Wednesday as -145 favorites. Tampa Bay dropped two of three to Baltimore, falling to 3-8 in the past 11 games at Tropicana Field. Houston put up a good fight in two games at Washington, but lost by exact 6-5 scores in the two losses, while giving up a 5-3 lead last night.

What to watch for: The Rays played well at Houston last weekend and grabbed two of three from the Astros for their first series win since late May against Boston. Archer is winless in his past four trips to the mound for the Rays, including a 7-3 setback last Saturday at Houston in which he lasted just three innings. Following an 8-1 stretch on the road, the Astros have dropped three straight on the highway, but have stolen four of their past six away series openers.

Phillies at Cardinals – 8:15 PM EST

                        Probable Pitchers:
                        PHI: Buchanan (2-3, 5.97 ERA)
                        STL: Miller (7-5, 3.42 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Phillies are coming off an impressive sweep over the Braves, as Philadelphia’s bats are finally waking up by scoring 10 runs on Wednesday. The Cardinals saw their five-game winning streak come to a halt in Wednesday’s 3-2 defeat to the Mets, as St. Louis allowed more than two runs for just the second time in the last 10 contests.

What to watch for: Both these teams are on fire at the moment, as Philadelphia is picking things up with wins in seven of its past nine contests, while St. Louis owns an 8-2 mark in the last 10 games. After a three-start winless stretch, the Cardinals have won each of Miller’s last two trips to the mound, including as an underdog against the Nationals last Saturday. In Buchanan’s two road starts, the Phillies have been outscored, 11-1, while Philadelphia has hit the ‘under’ in four of his five outings.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Football: some college knowledge......

Most of the knowledge below was gained from reading Phil Steele’s great college football magazine…..

                          13) Phil Steele’s top 5 surprise teams for 2014: Georgia-USC-Wisconsin-TCU-North Carolina.

                          12) Kansas State’s Bill Snyder is a Hall of Fame coach, for sure; going 178-90-1 as a football coach in Manhattan, KS is an amazing feat, considering how dismal K-State’s football program had been before Snyder took over- they would regularly lose by 30-40 points to Nebraska/Oklahoma every year.

Snyder “retired” for three years, and Wildcats stumbled to a 17-20 mark, so he came back and posted 13 outright upsets in five years since. Snyder is 7-8 in bowl games in the Little Apple, where bowl games used to be pipe dreams; K-State is +31 in turnovers the last two seasons.

                          11) Michigan State won its last three bowl games by a total of 8 points, and were underdog in all three games. Michigan is 2-3 in its last five bowls, allowing an average of 34.2 ppg. On the bright side for the Wolverines, they’re 7-3-1 vs spread under Brady Hoke in games following a loss.

                          10) Phil Steele’s top 4 offensive lines this season: Oregon-Auburn-Wisconsin-Florida State.

                          9) Houston Cougars were +25 in turnovers LY; next best teams were Florida State/Louisville, both +17 and Missouri +16.

Worst teams in turnover ratio LY: Southern Miss -19, California -15, Texas Tech -14 and Rutgers/Eastern Michigan, both -12.

                          8) Since 1997, Auburn is 10-1 vs Alabama in games decided by 10 or less points, 0-6 in games decided by more than ten points.

                          7) Seven of the top 9 QBs in the SEC LY are gone, leaving Nick Marshall/Maty Mauk as the top two returning passers, not exactly Elway/Marino territory.

                          6) There is a bowl game in the Bahamas Christmas Eve, which combines with the Aloha Bowl to spruce up an ordinarily lame TV schedule that night. Don’t laugh, for teams in C-USA/MAC, three or four hours of prime time TV exposure in a tropical setting is recruiting gold.

                          5) Three teams who should improve this year, thanks to an easier schedule: Idaho-Mississippi State-Pittsburgh.

Three teams who should regress this year, thanks to a harder schedule: Rutgers-Miami-Louisville.

                          4) Over the last ten years, LSU is 25-38-1 against the spread as a home favorite. Staying in the SEC, Tennessee is just 8-17 as an underdog since 2010.

                          3) Louisville is 11-3 vs spread in game following its last 14 losses. Boston College is 0-4 in bowl games since 2008, scoring an average of 14.8 ppg; that drought following an 8-game bowl winning streak from when Tom O’Brien was coach there.

                          2) UCLA returns its top four rushers from LY, five of its top six receivers, it has a 3rd-year starting QB and four starters back on the offensive line, as well as eight starters back on defense. National champs, anyone? Bruins are 9-5 as a favorite under Jim Mora.

                          1) Phil Steele’s top 5 preseason teams: Florida State-Alabama-UCLA-Oregon-Oklahoma.
