  • Preview: Dream (17-11) at Storm (10-20)

    Date: August 07, 2014 10:00 PM EDT

Before Shoni Schimmel was an All-American in college and an MVP in the WNBA All-Star game, the Native American guard grew up on an Indian reservation less than 300 miles from the Portland high school where she starred as well as KeyArena, home of the Seattle Storm.

With plenty of supporters expected to be in the crowd, the rookie returns to the Pacific Northwest for the first time in three years Thursday night as the Eastern Conference-leading Atlanta Dream visit Seattle.

While living on the Umatillia Indian Reservation in Mission, Ore., Schimmel was the subject of a documentary called "Off the Rez" about her unique life as an up-and-coming basketball star. She then attended Franklin High School in Portland and earned a scholarship to Louisville, where she was a four-year starter.

Schimmel has developed quite a following since being taken by the Dream (17-11) with the eighth overall pick in the draft, and despite starting only two games, she was named a starter for the All-Star game July 19 in Phoenix.

She scored 29 points in the East's 125-124 victory, and in the same arena Tuesday scored 13 in a 75-67 loss to the Mercury. The crowd was nearly 3,000 above Phoenix's season average, and this game is a sellout - mainly because of Schimmel.

'It's pretty awesome. I know that Seattle is sold out, and a lot of people I know are interested because it is like a home game for me,' she said. 'I have a lot of friends and family coming out.'

Schimmel hasn't played near home since her sophomore season when Louisville took on Portland and Washington State in 2011. Her main focus, though, is helping Atlanta snap out of its funk.

The Dream, who have clinched a playoff berth, have dropped six of eight and lead Washington by 3 1/2 games atop the East with six games left. Leading scorer Angel McCoughtry still believes they have what it takes to make their fourth appearance in the WNBA finals in five seasons.

'I feel like we're in a good position, we're a great team, and I think people are underestimating us right now,' said McCoughtry, the league's third leading scorer at 19.9 points per game. 'We can come out in the playoffs and do our damage.'

The last-place Storm (10-20) simply are trying to make one final push for the playoffs in the West. They ended a seven-game losing streak with Sunday's 71-65 win over San Antonio to pull within 3 1/2 games of the Stars and Los Angeles, who are tied for third.

Crystal Langhorne scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half, while former Dream forward Camille Little added 15.

'Hopefully, a taste of this can help propel us the rest of the season,' guard Sue Bird said. 'I know that it doesn't look good for us, but all we can do is take care of ourselves.'

Langhorne scored 23 points against Atlanta on May 30, but McCoughtry's 18 helped the Dream win 80-69.

        • Preview: Mystics (14-15) at Fever (13-16)

          Date: August 08, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

As the Washington Mystics hope to continue their push toward a second straight playoff appearance, the Indiana Fever look to tie them for second place in the Eastern Conference and begin a turnaround.

The visiting Mystics will try for their eighth victory in 10 games Friday night when they attempt to send the inconsistent Fever to their seventh defeat in 10 contests.

Following a 6-1 stretch in July, Washington (14-15) dropped consecutive contests at New York and Chicago before getting back on track with a convincing 79-46 win over the Liberty on Tuesday.

The Mystics went on a 29-6 first-half run, led 37-22 at the break and outscored New York 27-13 in the third quarter.

"Actually got to relax for a fourth quarter. Obviously a great win," said coach Mike Thibault, who guided the club to its first playoff appearance in three years upon taking over in 2013. "We played well at both ends."

Ivory Latta led four starters in double figures with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including four 3-pointers. The guard has averaged 16.5 points - 4.1 above her season mark - in six games since playing in her second straight All-Star game on July 19.

Latta, however, has struggled in this year's three meetings with Indiana (13-16), totaling 34 points while missing 19 of 26 shots.

Washington won 79-63 in Indianapolis on May 23 but dropped the next two matchups in the nation's capital by a total of six points.

Now the Mystics look to take the series finale while holding on to their slim edge over Indiana and Chicago for second place.

Washington holds opponents to a conference-best 40.9 percent from the field and is facing an Indiana team which is one of the league's worst shooting teams at 41.8 percent.

The Fever shot 36.9 percent despite hitting 7 of 14 from 3-point range in Tuesday's 66-64 home loss to Minnesota. They nearly ended the defending champion's nine-game win streak before Seimone Augustus scored off a rebound as time expired.

"It's unfortunate we didn't do something (against Minnesota) that really would have given us some momentum," coach Lin Dunn told the team's official website.

Indiana's Karima Christmas had 15 points after going scoreless in Saturday's 79-69 loss at Phoenix.

Erlana Larkins added 13 points and 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double. She's averaged 12.0 points and 10.0 boards in the three meetings with Washington.

The Fever have gone 5-7 since forward Tamika Catchings returned from injury. The nine-time All-Star, who has averaged 14.8 points in 12 games, scored 12 on 5-of-12 shooting Tuesday after missing all 10 of her field-goal attempts Saturday.

Indiana, which hasn't missed the postseason since 2004, has a half-game lead on New York for the East's final playoff spot.

          • Preview: Sun (11-19) at Liberty (12-16)

            Date: August 08, 2014 7:30 PM EDT

The New York Liberty likely can't afford another horrendous performance if they hope to finish off a run to their fourth playoff appearance in five seasons.

Coming off the worst offensive showing in franchise history, the Liberty will try to bounce back with their sixth win in seven home games Friday night against the Eastern Conference-worst Connecticut Sun.

A week after knocking off Washington at home, New York (12-16) missed an opportunity to move past the Mystics in the conference standings with an embarrassing 79-46 road loss Tuesday.

Tina Charles finished with 10 points - the only Liberty player in double figures - as New York shot 28.8 percent from the field and missed all seven of its 3-point attempts en route to the fewest points in the team's 18-year history.

The Liberty missed 13 consecutive field-goal attempts during a near nine-minute scoreless stretch in the first half before Washington outscored them 27-13 in the third quarter.

"We have our moments like this throughout the course of the year where we just collectively don't play," said coach Bill Laimbeer, whose club had won eight of its previous 12 games.

New York, which missed the postseason for the first time in four years in 2013 after finishing 11-23, dropped out of an East postseason spot while falling 1 1/2 games back of the second-place Mystics.

With three games left against playoff-hopeful Indiana, one more with Washington and another versus WNBA-best Phoenix, the Liberty will try to take advantage of a matchup with the struggling Sun (11-19).

New York should be able to regroup offensively as it looks to win the season series after the rivals split the first four meetings. The Sun rank ninth in the WNBA defensively, giving up 78.6 points per game.

Connecticut has dropped 13 of 16 after an 82-66 home loss to Chicago on Tuesday.

The Sun are hoping to have leading scorer and rebounder Chiney Ogwumike back after she sat Tuesday following a dental procedure. The rookie forward has averaged 18.3 points and 9.7 boards in her three meetings with the Liberty.

New York's Tina Charles is the only player in the WNBA who ranks among the top five in scoring and rebounding with a career-high 18.1 points and 9.8 boards per game. The MVP candidate, though, has fallen short of those marks in three of the four matchups against her former team.

Cappie Pondexter, who had four points on 2-of-11 shooting Tuesday, hopes to get back on track by continuing her success against Connecticut. The veteran guard is averaging 18.0 points - 4.1 above her season mark - in the season series.

            • Stars-Shock Preview

Despite their recent struggles, the San Antonio Stars remain close to capturing their seventh playoff berth in eight seasons and extending Becky Hammon's playing career.

The Stars will try to take another step toward wrapping up that spot Friday night, but they might need to slow down red-hot rookie Odyssey Sims to beat the host Tulsa Shock.

San Antonio (13-17) has dropped a season high-tying three in a row and eight of 10, but is two games ahead of Tulsa and 2 1/2 in front of Seattle in the race for the Western Conference's final postseason spot with four to play. The Stars took league-leading Phoenix into overtime Thursday, but the Mercury held them to five points in the final 3:55 in a 78-73 loss.

With a season-high 24 points, Jia Perkins was the only Stars player with more than 10. Hammon was held scoreless, missing three shots from 3-point range, and had one assist in her first game after being hired as the NBA's first full-time female assistant by the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday.

"It's a tough loss," Perkins said. "We really needed that game. We hung in there, we fought, but we just came up short."

Having won three of four over Tulsa (11-19), San Antonio has already clinched the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Stars, though, went 1/3 versus Seattle, and their magic number is two versus the Storm, who host Tulsa on Sunday night.

The Stars will try to cut that down to one with another win against the Shock. San Antonio posted all three of its previous wins in the series at home and lost 95-90 in its only visit to Tulsa on July 17.

Sims had 15 points in that victory before starting her hot stretch by scoring a career-high 39 in the finale of the home-and-home set, a 95-93 loss July 22. She scored 30 points in a 96-90 win in Los Angeles on Tuesday and is averaging 25.0 points while shooting 52.0 percent in the last seven games.

Skylar Diggins had a career-best 34 in the most recent game against San Antonio. Kayla McBride, taken No. 3 overall in this year's draft and one spot behind Sims, had a team-best 26 points for the Stars.

McBride scored a season-high 30 in an 82-79 win over Tulsa on May 28. She averaged 20.0 points and shot 54.5 percent in a three-game stretch before being limited to eight on 3-of-14 shooting Thursday.

              • Preview: Dream (17-12) at Sparks (13-16)

                Date: August 08, 2014 10:30 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Sparks missed a chance to clinch a playoff berth in their last game and won't get that opportunity Friday night.

The Atlanta Dream are winless halfway through this four-game trip as they play without a familiar face to Sparks fans.

The Sparks look to recover after being bullied in the paint as they face a Dream club playing without coach Michael Cooper.

Los Angeles (13-16) is in third place in the Western Conference and could have clinched a playoff spot as well by gaining the tiebreaker over fifth-place Tulsa but fell 96-90 at home to the Shock on Tuesday. The Sparks gave up 60 points in the paint and were outrebounded 37-17.

'A lot of is about effort and focus, and I think sometimes we focus too much on other things and maybe we forget to, or we're out of position,' said star rookie Nneka Ogwumike, who scored a season-high 35 points. 'It's just a combination of a lot of things.'

This contest figured to be a major moment for Cooper, the coach who guided the Sparks to their lone WNBA titles in 2001-02 in the franchise's glory days with Hall of Famer Lisa Leslie. He coached Los Angeles from 2000-04 as well as from 2007-09.

The first-year Dream coach is not with the club on this trip as he continues to recover from surgery for tongue cancer. A full recovery is expected.

The Sparks' inability to defend the paint Tuesday provides a blueprint for how to beat them that the Dream used in a 93-85 home win June 3. Atlanta held a 68-48 advantage in points in the paint, with frontcourt players Erika de Souza and Sancho Lyttle combining for 45 points and 23 rebounds.

Atlanta (17-12) has lost three straight and seven of nine, opening this trip with Tuesday's 75-67 loss at Phoenix before trailing by 18 points after 10 minutes and never recovering in Thursday's 88-68 defeat in Seattle.

'We have to keep on pushing,' said guard Tiffany Hayes, who scored a team-high 16 against the Storm. 'We need to pick up our energy and make sure we get these last couple wins on the road.'

Since the contest was a rout, Dream star Angel McCoughtry was limited to 21 minutes as she failed to make a basket for the first time this year. McCoughtry missed all five shots and scored a season-low two points after entering the contest third in the WNBA in scoring with 19.9 points per game.

The Dream have dropped their last two visits to Staples Center after winning their first four games there.

                    • Preview: Lynx (24-6) at Mercury (25-4)

                      Date: August 09, 2014 10:00 PM EDT

The frustrated feeling should still be fresh for the WNBA-best Phoenix Mercury after the Minnesota Lynx snapped their franchise-record winning streak just over a week ago.

Now the Mercury have a chance to return the favor as they try to keep the Lynx from a club-record 12th straight victory Saturday night when the league's top clubs meet in Phoenix.

The Mercury had won 16 in a row to pull within two of Los Angeles' league-record 18-game run from 2001 before losing 75-67 in Minnesota on July 31.

While Maya Moore led the Lynx with 20 points and Seimone Augustus added 19, they held the WNBA's top offensive club to 36.8 percent from the field and 3 of 17 from 3-point range. The Mercury (25-4) have put up 84.4 points per game while making 48.8 percent from the floor and 35.1 percent on 3-pointers this season.

Diana Taurasi wasn't happy with Minnesota's physical approach after making 5 of 21 shots, including 0 of 7 from 3-point range, while being held to 10 points.

"If we have to put our helmets on, that's what we're going to have to do from here on out," said the All-Star guard, who is 3 for 22 from beyond the arc in her last four games. "We'll be ready to play football next time."

The Mercury own a 1 1/2-game lead on the Lynx in the Western Conference as they look to avenge their only loss in the past 20 games and extend their franchise-best home winning streak to 14.

Minnesota (24-6) has its sights set on topping the franchise-record winning streak of 11 games, set July 10-Sept. 9, 2012.

Moore, the club's MVP candidate, finished with 17 points and Lindsay Whalen added 14 on Thursday in a 74-64 home victory over Chicago.

Coach Cheryl Reeve, however, was less than impressed.

"If we're not better in Phoenix, (the playoff race) will become a non-story," Reeve said after her team allowed 40 second-half points. "Phoenix will drill us if we have that same defensive lackluster attention to detail."

Minnesota had won 14 straight in this series, including the playoffs, before the Mercury took the first two from the defending champions this season. Still, that Lynx team was short-handed without injured starters Augustus and Rebekkah Brunson.

Phoenix has responded with three straight wins following its recent loss at Minnesota, though it was pushed to overtime in a 78-73 victory at San Antonio on Thursday.

"Really, we haven't had a lot of close games and it's actually good preparation leading to the playoffs," coach Sandy Brondello said. "Because that's what playoff basketball is like - it's a grind, it's really physical."

Candice Dupree led the Mercury with 20 points and a season-high 18 rebounds. Brittney Griner had five blocks, setting the WNBA single-season record with 117.

The All-Star center has averaged 19.7 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in the season series with Minnesota.

                        • Preview: Fever (13-17) at Liberty (13-16)

                          Date: August 10, 2014 3:00 PM EDT

The Indiana Fever and New York Liberty are among four teams fighting for three playoff spots in the Eastern Conference, and how they fare against each other down the stretch could end up determining their postseason fate.

Indiana and New York play the first of three meetings over eight days as the visiting Fever look to avoid a fourth straight defeat Sunday.

Second-place Washington leads the Liberty (13-16) by 1 1/2 games, and New York has a one-half game edge on Indiana (13-17) and Chicago, which are tied for the final East playoff spot.

The Fever have back-to-back games against New York - the teams meet again Thursday - and the clubs end the regular season with a meeting at Madison Square Garden next Sunday. Indiana plays Chicago the day before.

The Fever haven't done anything to help their playoff chances recently, getting routed by the Mystics 74-61 at home Friday. Shavonte Zellous scored 13 points but Tamika Catchings shot 4 of 14 and had only 11 for Indiana.

"We just have to flush this one," Zellous said. "We have to go to New York and steal a game up there."

Catchings was a bit more frustrated.

"I feel like we're underachieving right now,' Catchings said. 'For the most part, I felt like we were trying. It wasn't like we just rolled over. I think really it was turnovers and missed assignments. We just got to do better.

"We might not be in the playoffs if we keep playing like this. That's just the reality check of it."

New York has won two of three and boosted its playoff chances with Friday's 71-66 win over Connecticut. Tina Charles had 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Liberty.

Aside from their matchups with the Fever, they'll face West-leading Phoenix on Tuesday and Washington next Saturday.

'We knew how important this game was,' coach Bill Laimbeer said. 'It's not a death game but it was Game 5 or Game 6 in the world that I come from. You had to win this game to get yourself an advantage. We didn't play well but at the same time we gutted it out.'

New York made up for shooting 33 percent from the field by going 31 of 37 from the free-throw line. Cappie Pondexter scored six points while hitting just three of 12 shots - though she made two in the final minutes - and has shot 28.5 percent over her last four.

'Our heart was tested, there's no question about that,' Laimbeer said. 'Cappie didn't have her shot going but all of a sudden she makes two of the biggest shots of the game in the last couple minutes.'

Pondexter went 1 for 10 from the field at Indiana on May 31, but Charles had 22 points and 14 boards to help the Liberty win 70-66.

                          • Preview: Mystics (15-15) at Sun (11-20)

                            Date: August 10, 2014 4:00 PM EDT

The Washington Mystics went through a dismal three-week stretch midway through the season, but they've fought their way back to .500 and into solid position in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Washington looks to improve its postseason chances by earning a third straight victory Sunday on the road against the last-place Connecticut Sun.

The Mystics (15-15) lost seven of nine from June 15-July 5, including three losses to first-place Atlanta and another to Indiana, which along with New York and Chicago is battling for two of the final three East playoff spots.

Second-place Washington is two games behind the Dream but holds a 1 1/2-game edge on the Liberty and two-game advantage on the Sky and Fever. The Mystics have won eight of 11 since that tough stretch after beating Indiana 74-61 on Friday.

Kia Vaughn scored 22 points, her most in a game since 2012 and more than double her season average (9.3).

"I just went strong and aggressive, my teammates found me and I just made shots," Vaughn said. "We're just a great team. We pass well and shoot the ball well and we are getting used to each other more and more as the season goes on."

The Mystics still have plenty of work to do in order to sew up a second straight postseason berth. They face Chicago on Wednesday before a rematch with the Sun on Friday, then finish the regular season at home the following day against the Liberty.

Connecticut (11-20) still holds faint playoff hopes, as it sits 2 1/2 games behind Indiana and Chicago. It has lost three straight after falling 71-66 to New York on Friday.

The Sun trailed by eight at halftime before taking a brief one-point lead in the third quarter. Katie Douglas scored a season-high 26.

"I'm disappointed that we didn't come out with a better first half," Douglas said. "Not so much proud but I definitely liked our effort and fight in the second half. As professionals we have to do a better job coming out the gates."

Connecticut played its second consecutive contest without Chiney Ogwumike as she deals with an abscessed tooth, and it's unclear if she'll be available for this matchup. Ogwumike, the No. 1 overall pick and leading Rookie of the Year candidate, is averaging team highs of 15.9 points and 8.6 rebounds.

The Sun have back-to-back games against the Mystics before closing the regular season against Atlanta next Sunday.

Washington has won the previous three meetings this season. Ivory Latta scored 23 points to help overcome 18 and 10 rebounds from Ogwumike in an 89-75 victory in the most recent matchup July 23.

                            • Sparks-Stars Preview

While the Los Angeles Sparks can lock up the Western Conference's third playoff spot with another victory over San Antonio, the Stars' postseason future is a bit more uncertain.

Los Angeles looks to secure its fourth straight playoff appearance Sunday on the road while avoiding a third consecutive loss to the slumping Stars.

The Sparks (14-16) hold a 1 1/2-game edge on fourth-place San Antonio (13-18), which leads Tulsa by one game and holds the tiebreaker between the teams for the final postseason berth.

A Los Angeles victory in this contest would force the Stars to hold off the Shock over their final two games of the season. However, a San Antonio victory and a Tulsa loss to Seattle later in the night would wrap up playoff berths for both the Stars and Sparks.

Los Angeles faces second-place Minnesota on Tuesday, Seattle on Friday and WNBA-best Phoenix in Sunday's regular-season finale. Its chances of securing third place improved with Friday's 80-77 overtime win over East-leading Atlanta.

Candace Parker hit two clutch free throws with 1.8 seconds remaining in the extra session to finish with 26 points. She scored 28 in a 96-90 loss to Tulsa on Tuesday, when the Sparks were outrebounded 37-17 and allowed 60 points in the paint, but they bounced back to outscore the Dream 46-40 in the lane.

"It was a big focal point," Parker said. "We got our butts kicked on the boards the other night against Tulsa, and that was the reason why I think we lost the game."

While the Sparks have won three of four, the Stars have lost four straight after falling 79-62 to Tulsa on Friday. They've dropped nine of 11 to put themselves in a tougher spot to return to the playoffs after missing out last season following a six-year postseason run.

San Antonio faces Minnesota on Friday before closing the regular season against Chicago next Sunday.

Becky Hammon, who will retire at the end of the season before taking an assistant coaching job with the NBA's Spurs, scored 16 points after totaling that same amount over the previous three games.

"We didn't get our legs into it off the back-to-back," said coach Dan Hughes, whose team lost to Phoenix the previous night. "For the first half we did what we wanted, but Tulsa is really athletic."

Though the Stars have struggled lately, they've won the last two matchups with the Sparks after dropping the first by 21 points May 25. Danielle Robinson scored a season-high 24 points in a 101-74 victory June 14, then hit a tiebreaking layup with 8.4 seconds remaining eight days later and had 13 points in a 72-69 win.

                              • Preview: Dream (17-13) at Sky (13-17)

                                Date: August 10, 2014 6:00 PM EDT

The Atlanta Dream are on the verge of their longest losing streak in six years, but avoiding it could mean clinching the Eastern Conference title Sunday night.

The Dream could be in position to secure the No. 1 seed when they visit the Chicago Sky.

Two games up on second-place Washington, the Dream (17-13) have dropped eight of 10 since capping a 12-2 stretch with a 81-79 home win over Chicago on July 13.

Despite the slump, the defending East champs can secure the No. 1 seed with a victory and a Mystics loss Sunday. Washington faces Connecticut two hours before the Dream and Sky tip off, so Atlanta should have a good idea of whether a victory will lock up the East by gametime.

Of course, picking up wins has been anything but easy of late for the Dream, who are looking to avoid their first five-game losing streak since a 10-game slide July 18-Sept. 8, 2008. Atlanta is closing out a season-high four-game road trip.

Erika de Souza had 21 points and Shoni Schimmel added 12 - all on 3-pointers - but Candace Parker made two free throws with 1.8 seconds left to seal Los Angeles' 80-77 overtime victory Friday.

Angel McCoughtry, who averages a team-high 19.0 points, managed 12 and shot 5 for 20. She missed all five field-goal attempts and had a season-low two points in Thursday's 88-68 loss to Seattle.

'She just has to fight through it,' said Dream coach Michael Cooper, who is with the team while recovering from surgery for tongue cancer. "Great players have those games where the ball won't go in. I've still got a lot of faith in her."

McCoughtry has totaled 53 points and 15 rebounds in Atlanta's two wins over Chicago (13-17) this season. The All-Star missed an 87-73 road loss to the Sky on May 24 due to a rhomboid strain and shot 5 of 17 for 12 points in the teams' last meeting, a 79-75 Chicago road victory July 25.

Elena Delle Donne had 27 points in the May matchup to help the Sky win their third straight home meeting in the series. The All-Star forward averaged 15.3 points in three straight wins after missing more than a month with a flareup of Lyme Disease, but shot 1 of 7 for a season-low two points in Thursday's 74-64 loss at Minnesota.

The Sky led with less than two minutes left but the Lynx closed the game on an 11-0 run. Chicago is tied with Indiana for the final playoff spot in the East and is a half-game behind third-place New York.

'We just crumbled,' said guard Allie Quigley, who had a team-high 20 points off the bench. 'We played 36-38 minutes of good basketball and the last two minutes we just didn't execute.'

Quigley had her best performance as a pro at Atlanta on July 13, posting career highs of 27 points and four steals while grabbing a career high-tying five rebounds in the Dream's 81-79 overtime victory.
