  • Preview: Shock (12-19) at Storm (11-20)

    Date: August 10, 2014 9:00 PM EDT

Odyssey Sims has already helped the Shock reach new heights in her first season, but now she's hoping a shoulder injury doesn't keep her from leading the team to its first playoff appearance in Tulsa.

With Sims' status uncertain, the visiting Shock look to move closer to the Western Conference's final playoff spot while delivering a crushing blow to the Seattle Storm's postseason hopes Sunday night.

Tulsa (12-19) boosted its chances of earning a playoff berth for the first time since 2009, when the franchise played in Detroit, by topping fourth-place San Antonio 79-62 on Friday.

The Shock moved within one game of the Stars for the final playoff berth with three games to play, though San Antonio holds the tiebreaker after winning three of the five meetings.

"We're pushing for the playoffs but we're taking it one game at a time," forward Glory Johnson said. "It's been a tough push but it is three steps now (with road games at Seattle, Atlanta and Minnesota)."

The Shock already have recorded their most victories since moving to Tulsa, but they could have a difficult time adding to that total without Sims. The reigning rookie of the month led the way with 22 points Friday before going to the locker room after landing hard on her left shoulder late in the contest.

Sims has scored 24.6 per game while hitting 18 of 37 from 3-point range over her last eight. She finished with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting in an 80-74 home win over the Storm on July 29 after each club had won at home in June.

"She's so crafty with the ball," backcourt mate Skylar Diggins said. "She's a great finisher. She has a great body to be able to take the contact. She's also light on her feet."

Seattle (11-20) may be turning things around a bit too late as it goes after a season-high third straight victory following a seven-game slide. The Storm moved within two games of San Antonio with Thursday's 88-68 home win over East-leading Atlanta.

Seattle, which entered the contest averaging a WNBA-low 70.6 points, made 51.6 percent from the field and finished one shy of matching its season-high point total.

"To be able to get the lead is great," said guard Sue Bird, who finished with 10 points. "But to be able to hold them off and win the game by as much as we did is even more impressive."

Camille Little had 21 points and 13 rebounds and Crystal Langhorne scored 17 as the Storm kept alive their faint hopes of making the playoffs for an 11th straight season. They would be eliminated Sunday if they lose and the Stars beat Los Angeles.

Seattle's Tanisha Wright has played well against the Shock this year, averaging 16.3 points - almost twice her season mark.

Johnson has averaged 17.3 points and 11.7 rebounds in the three meetings, and she can break Cheryl Ford's single-season Shock record with her 18th double-double.

        • WNBA Betting Recap - 8/4-8/10

          August 11, 2014

League Betting Notes (from Monday, July 28 through Sunday, Aug. 3)

-- Favorites went 12-5 straight up
-- Underdogs went 10-7 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams posted a 11-6 SU record
-- Home teams posted a 13-4 ATS record
          -- The 'under' went 11-6

          Team Betting Notes

-- Phoenix (26-4) exacted a little revenge on Minnesota (24-7), winning 82-80 in the Valley of the Sun Saturday night, snapping the 11-game winning streak of the Lynx. The Mercury are now 3-1 SU/ATS vs the Lynx this season, and they atoned for a 75-67 setback in Minnesota July 31.

-- Atlanta (17-14) has fallen on hard times lately, losing five in a row. And after a 6-0 ATS run from June 3-20, the Dream have been mediocre against the spread, going 8-10-1 ATS over the past 19.

-- Tulsa (12-20) is a difficult team to figure. Just when you're ready to write them off, they win back-to-back games. Then, they lost to the lowly Storm Sunday. In fact, they're 4-3 SU/ATS over the past seven. The 'under' has been the play for the Shock lately, going 6-2 over the past eight.

-- New York (13-17) has alternated SU/ATS (4-4) wins and losses over the past eight games. They'll take on the Mercury at home Tuesday. The Liberty fell in the Valley of the Sun back on July 26 by a 78-63 score, failing to cover while the 'under' came in.

-- Seattle (12-20) is showing some signs of life, winning three straight games for the first time this season after taking down the Shock Sunday night. After a seven-game non-cover streak, the Storm is also 3-0 ATS during the winning streak.

-- San Antonio (14-18) ended their slide Sunday, putting an end to a four-game skid. However, they have still won just three of the past 12 straight up. They're also just 3-9 ATS during the poor stretch.

-- Los Angeles (14-17) awoke to beat the Dream 80-77 Friday, winning for the fourth time in six games, but they explicably tumbled Sunday in San Antonio as a road favorite. In addition, the Sparks are a dismal 0-6 ATS in the past six, and 1-9 ATS in the past 10.

-- Indiana (14-17) saw their 5-0 ATS streak end Aug. 8 against Washington (15-16), although they bounced back with a road win in New York as a pick 'em.

-- On the flip side, the Mystics have been decent against the number, even after their overtime setback at Connecticut Sunday, going 7-4-1 ATS over the past 12.

            • Mercury-Liberty Preview

The Phoenix Mercury are in position to secure home-court advantage throughout the WNBA playoffs, thanks in large part to the contributions of Diana Taurasi.

If the New York Liberty want to improve their chances of reaching the postseason, they'll likely have to figure out a way to stop her.

Phoenix heads to Madison Square Garden looking to wrap up the Western Conference's No. 1 seed Tuesday night with a win over the Liberty, who are battling for the final spot in the East.

Taurasi, who signed a multiyear contract extension Friday, has been the catalyst this season for the Mercury (26-4), who have set a team record for victories. One more over their final four games or a Minnesota loss will give them home court for the postseason.

Taurasi scored 24 and hit a jumper with 2.9 seconds left to give Phoenix an 82-80 win over the Lynx on Saturday.

"That's why she is the best player in the world," coach Sandy Brondello said.

Brondello knows opening each series on the Mercury's home floor is an accomplishment in itself, even though her ultimate goal is to win a championship.

"That's what you play for -- all these regular season games at this point is to have home-court advantage," Brondello told the team's official website. "It's to be able to come into the playoffs and play in front of your fans. We're a little bit closer."

Brittney Griner had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and the second of her two blocks came in the final seconds to preserve the win.

"This was a playoff game," Griner said. "We weathered the storm, we kept coming back and then at the end, we pulled it off."

The Liberty (13-17) should feel as if they're participating in postseason contests the rest of the way as well. They trail Indiana by one-half game for the fourth and final playoff spot in the East after being routed by the Fever 90-76 on Sunday.

New York trailed by 23 at one point as it lost for the second time in three games. It has another showdown with Indiana on the road Thursday, visits Washington on Saturday and closes the regular season the next night at home against the Fever.

"They definitely wanted it more," said center Tina Charles, who had 17 points but went 6 of 15 from the field. "They saw where they were in the playoff race and wanted to get this one. We have to come out with that energy and intensity."

Charles scored 20 points in the first meeting with the Mercury on July 26, but Griner had 18 and six blocks while Taurasi finished with 10 assists in Phoenix's 76-63 victory.

That contest was extremely physical, reminiscent of how Liberty coach Bill Laimbeer played for the Detroit Pistons during his NBA career. Griner picked up a flagrant foul, and Taurasi wasn't exactly pleased with the strategy.

"That `Bad Boys' stuff, that's dead in the water," Taurasi said. "That doesn't work anymore. That's such `80s basketball, but I guess they keep it rolling like that."

              • Sparks-Lynx Preview

Much of the talk from the Los Angeles Sparks recently has been about the postseason, but their play lately has left plenty to be desired.

They'll likely get another tough test Tuesday night on the road in a potential first-round preview against the Minnesota Lynx, who need a victory to keep their chances alive for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.

Los Angeles (14-17) sits in third place in the West, but its lead over fourth-place San Antonio was trimmed to one-half game after falling 82-76 to the Stars on Sunday.

It marked the third loss in five games for the Sparks, with each defeat coming against a conference opponent. Nneka Ogwumike scored 18 points, but Candace Parker shot 3 of 12 and finished with six after scoring 26 and 28 in her previous two games.

"I think that's been something that we've struggled with throughout the year -- being inconsistent throughout the game," Ogwumike said. "It can even get down to 38 minutes, and then the last two minutes we have to be able to capitalize on opportunities.

"These close games going into the playoffs, it's going to be a playoff atmosphere, and that's what we need to expect and be ready to play against."

Los Angeles will experience that against the Lynx (24-7), who are 2 1/2 games behind Phoenix for first place and would be locked into the No. 2 seed with another loss or Mercury win.

If Minnesota, the three-time defending West champion and reigning WNBA champ, remains in second place and the Sparks secure third, the clubs would face each other in a best-of-three first-round series.

The Lynx had an 11-game winning streak snapped with Saturday's 82-80 loss to Phoenix, as Diana Taurasi's jumper with 2.9 seconds left proved to be the difference. Maya Moore finished with 30 points and hit a runner to tie it with 7.9 seconds remaining before Lindsay Whalen had her last-second layup blocked.

Minnesota fell despite shooting 48.5 percent.

"We played hard, we had a lot of great hustle and effort but didn't execute in the second half like we usually do," Moore said. "But we still shot a great percentage."

Coach Cheryl Reeve likened the game between the West's top two teams to a playoff contest and was proud of her club's effort.

"Kind of unfortunate, we were right there, throughout most of the game had the lead, and then once they took the lead, you could see the bounce in their step went up," Reeve said. "It was a great game. They made the plays at the end and we didn't."

The Lynx are looking to sweep the season series after taking the first three meetings by an average of 13.6 points. Moore scored 31 in a 94-77 win June 17 and 30 in an 83-72 victory July 8.

                        • Liberty-Fever Preview

The Indiana Fever just defeated the New York Liberty and play two of their final three games against them.

It'll only take one more victory over New York for the Fever to clinch an Eastern Conference playoff spot and put the Liberty on the brink of elimination, and their next chance comes Thursday night in Indiana.

The Liberty (13-18) play their final three games against two of the teams they're chasing for a playoff spot. New York, however, faces a near must-win situation against the Fever as another loss would put it two games back of Indiana (14-17) while conceding the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Such a loss would also make it impossible to catch Chicago, and New York would be relying on two wins and two Washington losses to squeak in.

"That's what New York is about, isn't it?" guard Cappie Pondexter said. "Gritting it out at the finish. Teams have gone on (in sports) to do that and win the whole thing."

The Fever have won four straight in the series, including 90-76 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday to overtake the Liberty for fourth place.

Indiana shot a season-high 57.4 percent, while Tamika Catchings scored a season-best 29 points to lead the team in ending a three-game skid.

"I think we came out with a playoff mentality," Catchings said. "It's been disappointing the highs and lows we've been playing with, underachieving as a team and we wanted to come out and focus on just playing hard for four minutes at a time."

Catchings didn't play in the previous meeting, a 70-66 home win May 31, and she's averaging 24.7 points over her last three appearances against the Liberty.

Pondexter had 18 points Sunday while Tina Charles scored 17 with a season-low two rebounds.

"They definitely wanted it more," Charles said. "They saw where they were in the playoff race and wanted to get this one. Catch had 20 in the first half. We have to come out with that energy and intensity."

The New York center had a bigger game Tuesday against Phoenix, scoring 26 points with 12 rebounds, but the Liberty fell 76-64 to drop one game behind the Fever and help create Thursday's dire scenario.

Indiana plays two of its last three at home, where it has gone a WNBA-worst 5-10.

"I don't know what it is," Catchings said. "I don't know. One thing I think of is distraction. You get to a city, you're in a hotel, when you're at home, you got friends and family and a lot of things going on. We need to focus and put our foot down. This week is so important for us to make the playoffs."
