  • Stars-Sky Preview

The Chicago Sky won't have home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, but they could finish third in the Eastern Conference with a fifth consecutive home win in their regular-season finale and some help.

The San Antonio Stars have a more straightforward route to a third-place finish in the West and will try to secure that by matching their longest win streak this year and snapping a season-high five-game road skid Sunday.

Chicago (15-18) couldn't complete a rally from an 18-point deficit in the first quarter and fell 71-67 in a pivotal game at Indiana on Saturday. The Sky got within two points on four occasions in just their second loss in seven games since Elena Delle Donne's return from a recurrence of Lyme disease.

"You can't have a first quarter like that and expect to come back," said guard Allie Quigley, who had a team-best 17 points.

With that loss, Chicago has a difficult scenario to avoid a fourth-place finish in the East and a matchup with Atlanta in the first round. To move up to third, the Sky need a win from Indiana in New York on Sunday and a victory over San Antonio (15-18).

That would put them in a tie with Washington but Chicago would own the tiebreaker based on a better conference record, 14-8 to 11-11. If all three teams finish 16-18, Chicago would finish fourth because it had the worst combined record against the other two clubs at 4-5.

The Stars, meanwhile, can finish third in the West by recording their second three-game win streak this season. San Antonio, which last won three straight June 14-22, would match Los Angeles' 16-18 record with a victory and take third because it won three of four meetings with the Sparks.

They clinched their seventh playoff berth in eight years and extended Becky Hammon's career with a 92-76 win over the West's second-place team, Minnesota, on Friday.

Hammon will become the NBA's first full-time female assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs when her 16th season ends.

"We'll take it as we go," she said. "I feel like we've been playing a little bit better as of late. ... When you get into the playoffs, there's a new energy and there's a new life. Everybody's on a clean slate."

San Antonio won its only other matchup with Chicago in 2014 but Delle Donne sat out for the 17th time in 18 games in that 92-74 road defeat July 29. That was also the final of her 12 consecutive absences, which ended in an 87-74 victory over New York on July 31.

Kayla McBride's 16 points led five players in double figures against Chicago and the Stars shot 50.7 percent. Epiphanny Prince had a team-leading 23 points for the Sky and Jamierra Faulkner had 19, but Sylvia Fowles was the team's only other player in double figures with 14.

Delle Donne had 23 points and made the winning free throws with 1.8 seconds left in her most recent game against San Antonio, a 72-70 home victory June 9, 2013.

    • Mercury-Storm Preview

The Seattle Storm's worst season in 13 years is nearly over, but preserving their share of some league history may give them a bit of extra motivation in an otherwise meaningless finale.

Phoenix tries to set a WNBA single-season record with its 29th victory in Sunday's visit with the Storm, one of the franchises whose mark the Mercury are looking to expunge.

Seattle (12-21) won its first three games in August to keep alive its slim playoff hopes, but was eliminated before tip-off of Friday's 77-65 loss to Los Angeles.

Starters Sue Bird, Camille Little and Tanisha Wright played a total of 14 minutes and didn't play in the second half. The Storm will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2003, and their record will be the franchise's worst since 2001 -- their second season in the league.

"The mood was flat," said reserve guard Jenna O'Hea, who had a career-high 16 points. "We had a lot of momentum going into this game -- we won our last three games -- so we were feeling pretty good about ourselves. We knew some things had to go our way. (Coach) Brian (Agler) came in and gave us a talk. We still want to keep getting better. We still want to finish the season off well for our fans, and for each other."

It seems likely Bird, Little and Wright will play bigger minutes on Fan Appreciation Night as Seattle tries to finish 9-8 on its home court, but putting on a good showing at KeyArena likely won't be its only motivation.

The Mercury (28-5) beat Los Angeles 76-69 on Saturday night to match the 2000 and 2001 Sparks and 2010 Storm at a WNBA single-season record 28 wins.

Star Brittney Griner led the way with 19 points as Phoenix bounced back from a 96-82 loss at Atlanta on Wednesday in which it rested some starters.

It sounds like coach Sandy Brondello has no intention of letting Griner, Diana Taurasi and Candice Dupree sit with the record on the line Sunday.

"We're going to go into Seattle and (try to) win that game," Brondello said. "We're going to go for the record. Now that we've gotten this far, might as well."

The Mercury will have four days off after Sunday's finale before opening the playoffs on Friday. They'll host Los Angeles if San Antonio beats Chicago on Sunday or the Stars if that contest goes the other way.

Phoenix has won all four previous meetings this season by an average of 17.5 points. Griner has averaged 17.0 points while Taurasi led the way with 22 on July 22 in an 89-71 victory in Seattle.

        Sunday, August 17

This team has been a solid ATS bet in recent games

The Indiana Fever have been one of the hottest bets going in the WNBA, posting an 8-1 record against the spread in their last nine games overall.

The hot streak has improved the Fever's ATS record to 21-12, making them the top play in the league at the betting window.

Indiana had posted five-straight wins against the spread before dropping a game to the Washington Mystics, but currently bring a three-game ATS winning streak into Sunday's date with the New York Liberty.

The Fever are currently 2-point road dogs at the Liberty - a team they are 3-0 ATS against thus far in the season

Perfect Saturday on hardwood for Under bettors

If you had taken the Under on all four WNBA games Saturday, you were probably ecstatic at the results. The Under went a perfect 4-0 on the day, improving the season-to-date record to 94-104 Over/Under.

All four games finished convincingly below closing totals with disparities of nine points (New York at Washington), eight points (Chicago at Indiana), 20 points (Tulsa at Minnesota) and 12 points (Los Angeles at Phoenix).

Connecticut hosts Atlanta (157), Indiana visits New York (143.5), San Antonio travels to Chicago (154) and Seattle hosts Phoenix (148.5) on Sunday's WNBA schedule.

                  • Preview: Mystics (16-18) at Fever (16-18)

                    Date: August 21, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

Indiana's loss to Washington earlier this month provided a wake-up call for the Fever, who responded with a late-season charge to secure the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Though coach Lin Dunn will retire at season's end, her only focus is how to prevent another loss at the hands of the Mystics as this best-of-three first-round series tips off Thursday night in Indianapolis.

Following a 74-61 loss to Washington on Aug. 8, the Fever (16-18) won their next three to earn home-court advantage in this series. With the playoffs sewn up, Dunn rested Tamika Catchings, Erlana Larkins and Briann January for Sunday's 73-61 loss to New York in the regular-season finale.

"More than anything, we need those three, who play harder than anybody, to be fresh," Dunn said.

She's hoping that rest will help Indiana make a run at its second WNBA championship in three years. Dunn is refusing to think about her pending retirement, not even looking past the early stages of Game 1.

"All we're thinking about is Washington - the first four minutes of the Washington game," Dunn said.

The Fever won their last two home games following the loss to the Mystics, which completed a four-game season series that saw each club win twice on the road. They also met twice in the preseason.

"They know us and we know them," Dunn said. "I think it's going to be the team that's the most focused, the most rested, the most aggressive defensively, the one that takes care of the boards."

Washington (16-18) is hoping to regroup after dropping three of four following the win over the Fever, including Saturday's 73-61 loss to New York. Coach Mike Thibault believed that defeat could have been the result of back-to-back contests after the Mystics beat Connecticut the night before.

'It's disappointing to end your home season like that,' Thibault said. 'I don't know if we were flat from (Friday), but we were bad in the first half. They did whatever they wanted pretty much.'

Ivory Latta scored 15 points against the Liberty and said Washington isn't going to dwell on the loss heading into the playoffs.

'This game is behind us,' Latta said. 'Clean slate, 0-0 going into the playoffs. We've got to be focused and ready.'

Defensively, the Mystics will have to contend with 35-year-old Tamika Catchings, who has had her minutes limited by Dunn after returning from a back injury July 5.

Catchings averaged 23.0 points during the Fever's recent winning streak, but the Mystics held her to 11 points on 4-for-14 shooting in the last matchup.

"Everybody has beaten everybody (in the regular season)," Catchings said. "And now, in the playoffs, your focus is different. The intensity is different. It's about getting into the playoffs and getting to that point where everything just clicks."

                    • Stars-Lynx Preview

Coach Cheryl Reeve knows the Minnesota Lynx have flaws, and she also realizes those issues won't magically be corrected simply because the postseason is starting.

She's hoping her club's playoff experience will factor in, though, as the Lynx begin their quest for a fourth consecutive WNBA finals appearance and second straight championship with Thursday night's opener of a best-of-three series with the visiting San Antonio Stars.

Minnesota (25-9) finished four games behind league-best Phoenix in the Western Conference and is the No. 2 seed. It finished the regular season by ending a three-game losing streak with Saturday's 80-63 victory over Tulsa.

The Lynx haven't been playing their best basketball as they prepare to defend their title, and they trailed in the fourth quarter before going on a 19-0 run.

"We don't subscribe to that notion that the slate is wiped clean and it's 0-0 and it's a new season," Reeve told the team's official website. "It's true from a record standpoint, but it's not true from an identity standpoint. You can't change who you are. You can't suddenly become a great offensive team if you're not. You can't suddenly become a great defensive team if you're not.

"We take a great deal of comfort in knowing that we know what it takes to win games. We believe we're the best team in the league and we know that we've got to back it up with our play."

Minnesota certainly has one of the best players in the league in Maya Moore, who won her first scoring title with an average of 23.9 points -- 3.8 more than anyone. She helped the Lynx rank second in scoring at 81.7 points per contest, but she's more concerned with how they'll fare at the other end of the floor.

"We know if we play defense to the best of our abilities, we can be as good as we want to be," Moore said. "That's really our main focus and being connected and disciplined."

Minnesota, seeking to become the first team to make four straight WNBA finals appearances since the Houston Comets won the league's first four titles from 1997-2000, won the first four meetings with San Antonio before being routed by the Stars 92-76 on Friday.

San Antonio (16-18) heads into the postseason on a three-game winning streak after beating Chicago 84-72 on Sunday to secure the West's No. 3 seed.

"What I like is that I feel we've got a little rhythm going into the playoffs, we'll take some time and get ready," coach Dan Hughes. "But they're just awfully good. Minnesota is an exceptional basketball team."

The Stars also are looking to extend the career of 16-year veteran Becky Hammon, who will retire at season's end and take an assistant coaching job with the NBA's Spurs.

Hammon doesn't want that to be the team's focus, though.

"We've been playing well this last week or so and we've been playing solid basketball going into the playoffs," Hammon said. "I think that's the bigger picture."

Game 2 will be Saturday in San Antonio.
