            • Who's Hot - NL Edition

              May 12, 2014

The long road to October has begun in the bigs, as 30 teams with high hopes of being the next team to be a part of the Fall Classic have started their journeys.

There can only be so many winners in MLB betting action though, and today, we're looking at the top teams out of the gate in the National League.

San Francisco Giants (24-14, +$1,053) – Pitching wins championships. The Giants know that better than any other team in the game, as they have picked up victories in the Fall Classic because of their arms. This year though, it's not the starting pitching which is really doing it for San Francisco. Tim Lincecum has only posted a 5.55 ERA, while Matt Cain only has a 4.25 ERA and has yet to win his first game. Granted, Tim Hudson has been a fantastic pickup and could be set to win at least 15 games on the campaign, and Madison Bumgarner has once again put up a great season. It's the bullpen though, that has really been great. Sergio Romo has 12 saves in 13 tries this year, and Jean Machi has a 0.49 ERA and five wins out of the pen. Even when you look at this lineup, there are a lot of good bats here, and if guys like Angel Pagan (.314/.443/.805) and Michael Morse (.273/.537/.843) can continue to light it up at the plate, good things are going to continue for the boys by the Bay.

Milwaukee Brewers (24-14, +$1,048) – There isn't a better story right now in baseball than the Brew Crew. Francisco Rodriguez closed out his first 15 games and made it through his first 19 appearances without giving up a run, but he hasn't been the only man in this bullpen who has been virtually perfect. Will Smith has a 0.52 ERA in 17.1 innings of work, while Zach Duke has allowed just three runs in 17.1 innings of work as well. All of the starters have at least show some promise, and short of Matt Garza, all of the starters have ERAs of 3.53 or better. That's how you win lots of games. We can only imagine what this team is going to look like when Ryan Braun comes off of the DL after a freak injury suffered two weeks ago.

Colorado Rockies (23-17, +$587) – The Rocks are 13-5 at home this year, and they are really taking advantage of what Coors Field has to offer them. Offensively, this team is just insane at the moment, and it's because Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki are going bananas. As a team, Colorado is batting .302 with an OPS of .855. The team has 57 home runs and is averaging 5.75 runs per game. However, we have to remember that this is a team which historically has a lousy pitching staff. All those great numbers this time of year should probably yield better than a 23-17 record through 40 games. If there is a team amongst these three which could fall, this is the one we would be most wary of.

              • Cubs, Cards open 4-game set

                May 12, 2014

Chicago Cubs (12-24) at St. Louis Cardinals (19-19)

First pitch: Monday, 8:10 p.m. ET
                Sportsbook.ag Line: St. Louis -165, Chicago +155, Total: 7.5

The Cardinals try to establish themselves as the team to beat in the NL Central when they start a four-game series against the long-time rival Cubs on Monday night.

Chicago is once again the bottom-feeder in the division, and comes into this game with seven losses in its past eight games, including a sweep at the hands of the Braves this weekend. The Cubs produced nearly no offense in the series, being outscored 10-4, and lost Sunday’s game 5-2 while going just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. 1B Anthony Rizzo is second on the team with a .285 average, but was just 2-for-11 with three strikeouts in the series.

St. Louis has been playing below its usual standards by losing three of the past four series, but avoided being swept by the Pirates with a 6-5 victory on Sunday night. Each game in that series was decided by two runs or less, with the Cardinals able to hold on Sunday despite their bullpen allowing three runs in 3.2 innings. OF Allen Craig (.221 BA) started the season out slowly, but was 5-for-11 in the series with a homer, 4 RBI and three runs.

Getting the call to start this game for Chicago will be LHP Travis Wood (2-4, 4.75 ERA) as he opposes fellow LHP Tyler Lyons (0-2, 3.43 ERA) for visiting St. Louis.

The road has not been kind for the Cubs this season as they are just 5-13 in away games, while the Cardinals have played just 12 of 38 games at home this year, going 7-5 at Busch Stadium.

St. Louis has been the much better team in this matchup since the start of the 2012 campaign, going 25-17 (.595) against Chicago overall and 15-6 (.714) when hosting in this series. But the Cubs took the first series of the season from May 2-4, taking two of three games with 18 hits and three homers over their two wins.

Bettors should take notice that Chicago is 16-11 (.593) since the start of last season when playing on the road against a left-handed starter, but the club is only 16-35 (.314) after batting .225 or worse over a 10-game span in the same timeframe.

Travis Wood is coming off his worst outing of the season (4 IP, 8 H, 8 ER, 5 BB, 3 K’s) against the White Sox on Wednesday, but has still posted a career-high 8.6 K/9 rate in 2014, and has been unlucky with hitters having a .341 BABIP. Before facing the Sox, he took on St. Louis and was terrific, getting his second win of the season as he went seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs (2 ER) while striking out six with zero walks. The win brought Wood's career record against the Cardinals to 4-5 (5-7 team record) while sporting a subpar 4.90 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. The victory was his first against St. Louis in five tries, and he had just nine strikeouts over his previous four starts (19 IP).

C Yadier Molina has absolutely dominated the lefty, going 12-for-30 (.400) with three homers, four doubles and 11 RBI. OF Matt Holliday (8-for-29, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 8 K’s), OF Jon Jay (10-for-25, 3 RBI) and OF Allen Craig (8-for-25, 2 HR, 2 RBI) have also had previous success against Wood. The only player on the roster who has really struggled against him is 2B Mark Ellis, who is 2-for-12 in his career.

The Cubs’ bullpen has put together a 3-10 record and is 4-for-8 in save opportunities so far this year, with a poor 4.00 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. Their relievers have been much better on the road though, with a 2.38 ERA and 1.11 WHIP while allowing just two home runs and striking out 54 batters in 56.2 frames. Hector Rondon (1.56 ERA, 3 saves) has taken over the closer role and is perfect in his three save chances while striking out 21 batters in just 17.1 innings.

Tyler Lyons has pitched in five games this year, three as a starter and two as a reliever, while having his best start of the season in his last outing on Tuesday. He faced the powerful Braves lineup in that game, going six innings and allowing just one run (a solo homer) on four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. He’s been able get strikeouts when necessary, mowing down one batter per inning so far this season, and has given up just two homers in 21 frames.

Lyons has yet to take on the Cubs in his young career, but will need to be careful when facing young 24-year-old 1B Anthony Rizzo, as he is tied for the team lead with seven homers and leads the club in both RBI (18) and walks (24). SS Starlin Castro has also been having a solid season (.282 BA, 5 HR, 16 RBI) but has only five hits in his past 30 at-bats with seven strikeouts.

The Cardinals’ bullpen has gone 1-7 this year with a 3.83 ERA and 1.16 WHIP, and is 10-for-14 in save chances. Their closer, Trevor Rosenthal (4.96 ERA, 10 saves) has been perfect in his 10 save opportunities, but has already walked 10 batters in just 16.1 innings on the mound.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

                  13) When I was a student basketball manager at UAlbany, we played a road game at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL; great area, looked like a nice school, kind of school kids from well-off families attend.

Rollins had an interesting speaker at its commencement exercises this weekend: the ex-wife of Eldrick Woods, the golddigging former nanny Elin Nordegren, an inspiration to women everywhere-- marry a philandering rich dude, be set financially for life. If they hurry, they can book V Stiviano for next year's graduation.

                  12) Cubs' pitcher Jeff Samardzija is first pitcher ever to allow 3 or less runs in each of his first eight starts, without winning any of them.

                  11) Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg left Cole Hamels in to throw 133 pitches Sunday, treating a May 11 game with the Mets like Game 7 of the World Series; he knew he didn't have closer Papelbon available, so he tried to lessen the number of outs his bullpen had to get. It didn't work; Mets won 5-4 in 11 innngs.

                  10) Sandberg wouldn't use all his relievers in this game; some he obviously has no confidence in during close games, so he wound up with starter Roberto Hernandez coming in to close the game in 9th inning, even though Hernandez threw 99 pitches in Friday night's game. Sandberg had an interesting weekend........

                  9) Saturday night, the Phils were going to walk rookie Matt Campbell with first base open and two out in a 4-3 game in the 6th; catcher Ruiz stood up, they threw ball one outside, then suddenly changed their mind and pitched to Campbell, who tied the game with a sac fly. Sandberg later said Chase Utley made that decision to pitch to the rookie, sensing Bobby Abreu would pinch-hit if they walked Campbell.

Interesting way to run a veteran ballclub, letting players decide on strategy, but long term, the manager better grab the bull by the horns and decide policy, since he's the one who will get fired of those moves don't work well. We'll follow this.

                  8) December 23, 2011; A's got Derek Norris in a six-player trade that sent Gio Gonzalez to Washington. Sunday, Norris hit a pair of 3-run homers off of Gonzalez, in the first two innings (both on 3-0 pitches) as the A's swept Washington 9-1. Bob Melvin is getting tremendous production from his catching platoon (Norris/Jaso).

                  7) 36 of 98 underclassmen who declared for this year's NFL draft weren't drafted; lot of kids are getting bad advice. At the end of the 2013 season, only 56% of kids who left school early from 2011-13 were still on NFL rosters.

                  6) When the Bengals traded up in the 4th round to draft center Russell Bodine, it was the first time in twelve years they traded up in the draft.

                  5) Mark Jackson asked Jerry West not to go to Warrior practices? Must have been a fun season in Oakland. I guess winning doesn't cure all that ails you.

                  4) Couple of college basketball transfers found homes: Kareem Canty goes from Marshall to South Florida, instead of Auburn, where he originally transferred to, and former Maryland point guard Seth Allen stays in the ACC at Virginia Tech. .

                  3) CC Sabathia is on the DL with a swollen knee and a swollen ERA (3-4, 5.28).

                  2) If the baseball playoffs started today, these teams would make it:
NL: Atlanta-Milwaukee-San Francisco, wild cards: Rockies-Marlins
                  AL: Baltimore-Detroit-Oakland, wild cards: Bronx-Angels

                  1) Highlight of this week is four Mets-Bronx Bomber games; my 88-year old father despises the Bombers, so it is good theater listening to him during the games, though he is discouraged with the Mets' recent play (2-8 in last ten games).

Showers in the forecast for Camden Yards

The Baltimore Orioles host the Detroit Tigers Monday evening, but the game could be marred by a few showers.

According to DailyBaseballData.com, there is a 30-to-40 percent of showers by gametime, with scattered thunderstorms in the forecast prior to gametime.

Rick Porcello is slated to start for the Tigers and Bud Norris is the scheduled starter for the Orioles.

Ryan Braun to be activated tomorrow

Ryan Braun is on the DL with a strained oblique. But good news: Braun has been out since April 26 and has been on the disabled list since May 3. Before being shut down he hit .318 with six homers and a .952 OPS in 22 games. Also since then: there has not been a reliable heel playing major league baseball.

Hernandez is 'King' versus Tampa Bay

It's no secret that Felix Hernandez is one of the more dominant pitchers in Major League Baseball, but his authority over the Tampa Bay Rays in Seattle is insane.

The Mariners are 8-0 in King Felix's last eight starts versus the Rays at Safeco Field.

Seattle is currently a -156 home favorite versus the Rays. Cesar Ramos is slated to take the bump for the Rays.
