Over is hot when Masterson pitches versus Twins

The Cleveland Indians will send Justin Masterson to the mound Thursday and he's been a hot Over bet when pitching versus the Twins.

The Over is 6-2-1 in his last nine starts overall versus the Twins and 4-1 O/U in his last five home starts versus them.

The Twins and Indians play the lone afternoon game Thursday with the total currently 8.

Capping the best 5-inning teams in baseball
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Five-inning MLB odds are the fastfood of baseball betting.

You don’t have time to sit through a full nine innings, the kids are screaming at each other, but you want to get some MLB action down. Five-inning odds are your answer.

You’ve handicapped the starters and shopped around for the best prices, but you’ll be damned if you’re going to let some tater-tossing reliever spoil your wager in the late innings. Five-inning odds go down smoother than a cold beer in the bleachers.

You have to kill time in the sportsbook before the big Game 7 showdown tips off and you’re tired of getting trucked by video poker. Hey, five-inning odds – how’s it hangin’?

Betting on shortened MLB action is not a new process. Books have been offering five-inning offerings for years. However, according to books, five-inning lines only make up about 6.5 percent of a game’s total handle, so it’s not the most trafficked market for baseball bettors.

Here’s a look at best teams through the first five innings of action to start the 2014 MLB season:

    Detroit Tigers: 3.07 runs for/1.78 runs against = +1.29

The Tigers are no surprise to see at the top of this list. Detroit is 20-9 heading into Thursday’s action – tops in the American League – and a lot of that has to do with a starting staff boasting a 2.73 collective ERA, which ranks tops in the majors. However, Detroit’s bullpen is putting up a 5.24 ERA – second worst in the bigs. A five-inning wager banks more on the Tigers’ starters and makes it less likely the relievers will piss away your win.

    Colorado Rockies: 3.65 runs for/2.47 runs against = +1.18

The Rockies surprised some with their start to the still-young season, chasing down the Giants in the National League West. Colorado is crushing it, averaging 5.97 runs per game – 3.65 of those run coming in the first five innings. The pitching staff hasn’t been as potent with a collective 4.09 ERA but is allowing just 2.47 runs through the first five innings, which is good enough for those playing the five-inning odds.

    Oakland Athletics: 3.19 runs for/2.13 runs against = +1.06

Moneyball isn’t just a nine-inning equation. The Athletics’ mathematical formula for success is paying off for five-inning bettors as well. Oakland works quick, scoring 65 percent of its runs through the first five – most notably in the first (0.84 run per first inning) and third (0.91) innings. However, the A’s haven’t played to form in recent games, going 2-5-1 in the first five innings the past eight games as of Wednesday.

Kansas City Royals: 2.32 runs for/2.10 runs against = +0.22

The Royals don’t have the biggest run differential through the first five innings but are presenting better value on five-inning odds than a full nine-inning moneyline wager. Kansas City was just 16-17 heading into Thursday's date with the Mariners and down -333 units on the year. However, in that same span, the Royals were 16-11-6 in the first five innings – winning 59 percent of the time. When you factor in that K.C. was likely an underdog or short favorite in those games – and that its bullpen has a 4.17 ERA and six blown saves – five-inning odds are the way to go in Kansas City.

        Reds, Rockies square off

        May 9, 2014

        Colorado (22-15) at Cincinnati (15-18)

First pitch: Friday, 7:10 p.m. ET

        Sportsbook.ag Line: Cincinnati -180, Colorado +170, Total: 7.5

The red-hot Rockies head to Great American Ball Park on Friday to begin a three-game series against the struggling Reds.

Colorado has been tearing it up lately, winning 15 of the past 21 games, including taking 3-of-4 against the Rangers (two home, two away) while outscoring them 29-10 in the four contests. But the Rockies' offense ground to a halt in Thursday's 5-0 loss. 3B Nolan Arenado (.322 BA) extended his hitting-streak to a franchise-best 28 games in the contest while SS Troy Tulowitzki (MLB-high .407 BA) is 14-for-25 with two homers, 9 RBI and 10 runs over seven games in May.

Cincinnati has been moving in the opposite direction, going 4-7 in its past 11 contests while losing both games of a quick two-game series against the Red Sox this week. The Reds did play close games though, losing each one by a score of 4-3, but their bullpen failed to be effective, taking the loss both times. The offense managed just four hits in Wednesday’s loss while star 1B Joey Votto (.263 BA) went 1-for-9 over the two games.

Toeing the rubber for Colorado in this one will be RHP Jhoulys Chacin (0-1, 7.20 ERA) as he makes just his second start of the season. Opposing him for Cincinnati will be stud RHP Johnny Cueto (3-2, ML-best 1.31 ERA, ML-best 0.73 WHIP) who has won three of his past four games.

The Rockies have had a distinct advantage at home, so going on the road will be tough for them, as they are just 9-10 in away games this year. On the other hand, the Reds are sporting a mediocre 8-7 record when playing at home this season.

Since the start of the 2012 campaign, Cincinnati holds a 7-5 advantage in this matchup, but has split the six games at home (3-3). An advantage for Colorado in this one is that the club is 21-10 (.677) when playing on Friday since the start of last season. Meanwhile, the Reds have gone 28-8 (.778) in home games after a loss in the same timeframe. 1B Justin Morneau (neck) is questionable in this game for the Rockies, while CF Billy Hamilton, who has not started a game this month because of an injury to his knuckles, is also listed as questionable for Cincinnati.

Jhoulys Chacin was tremendous last year despite pitching half of his games in Colorado, and much of his success can be contributed to his ability to induce ground balls, doing so 46.8% of the time compared to just 38.5% in the previous season. He made his season debut on Sunday after returning from a strained shoulder and did not look good, giving up eight hits and four runs over five innings while striking out four and walking far too many batters with five free passes. His average fastball velocity in the start was just 87.7 MPH, and he has seen that number slowly drop since he was hitting 91.5 MPH on average back in 2010.

Chacin has faced the Reds three times over his career, going 1-2 with a solid 3.26 ERA and 1.14 WHIP, with the Under going 3-0 in those outings. He has not thrown against them since 2011, and in his most recent matchup, he lasted only 5.1 innings while giving up four hits and three runs with just three strikeouts and two walks. 1B Joey Votto has gone 3-for-10 with a double and four strikeouts in his career against Chacin while 2B Brandon Phillips, OF Ryan Ludwick and 3B Todd Frazier are a combined 2-for-12 in the matchup.

The Rockies' bullpen has done well despite playing plenty of games at Coors Field and has gone 6-6 overall with a 3.91 ERA and 1.36 WHIP while saving a subpar 9-of-16 games. Closer LaTroy Hawkins (2.92 ERA, 9 saves) has been effective as a 41-year-old though, picking up a save in all nine of his opportunities while striking out just five batters over 12.1 frames.

Johnny Cueto has been a stud for years now, sporting an ERA less than 2.85 in each season since 2011, but averaged just 22.7 starts per year between 2011 and 2013. This season he has picked it up even more and is striking guys out at a career-high rate (9.8 K/9) while having two complete games in his first seven starts. He has been lucky though, with batters producing just a .156 BABIP against him, a much lower number than his career .278 BABIP. Cueto has lasted at least seven innings in each of his starts, including going eight innings while allowing just three hits and two runs with 10 K's and only one walk in a win over the Brewers in his last outing on Saturday.

He’s 2-2 (2-3 team record) with a 4.05 ERA and 1.58 WHIP when facing the Rockies over his career, and has allowed 21 hits and nine runs in 10.2 IP over his past two starts against them. Surprisingly, in the second of those two games he earned a win, as his offense backed him in a 9-7 victory. OF Carlos Gonzalez has seen the ball well from Cueto, going 4-for-10 with a home run, double and 6 RBI against him in his career. SS Troy Tulowitzki has also done well (2-for-6, 1 double) in limited at-bats against the righty.

The Reds bullpen has struggled in the absence of Aroldis Chapman, going 2-8 with a 4.40 ERA and 1.58 WHIP while getting the save in just 6-of-11 chances. They have been better at home though, with a 3.63 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and a 2-2 record over 34.2 innings. Jonathan Broxton (0.00 ERA, 5 saves) is filling in as closer until Chapman returns, and has been spectacular. He has gone 5-for-5 in save opportunities while allowing just three hits in his eight innings on the mound.

            Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- What does it say about the NBA playoffs that their games were on ESPN2 Thursday night and the NFL Draft was on ESPN?

-- Halftime scores of first two Blazer-Spur games: 65-39/70-51. Different level of play in playoffs, compared to regular season games.

-- Brooklyn may have beaten the Heat 4 of 4 during the season, but they're down 2-0 in this series and will be hard pressed to avoid a sweep.

-- Giants beat the Dodgers, are 3.5 games ahead of them. Quick prediction; Dusty Baker will finish this season as the Dodgers' manager.

-- Giancarlo Stanton hit a laser beam of a homer to CF in 11th inning as San Diego lost again at home, 3-1. Padres' only run was on a homer by pitcher Kennedy.

-- Jose Fernandez pitches against San Diego tonight; total on game is 5.5-- you do not see a lot of 5.5 totals in baseball.

            *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

            13) If I'm a Cleveland Browns' fan today, I'm fired up; they got their QB of the future, got another good defensive player with the 4th pick and came out of it with an extra #1 pick for next year, and its Buffalo's pick-- they made a killing!!!!

            12) If I'm a Buffalo fan, I'm like....this is a draft loaded with WRs, and we traded our #1 pick next year for a receiver? When did we hire Kevin Costner as our GM?

            11) Vikings got an extra 5th-round pick to drop one slot in the draft, then got the guy they wanted anyway. Seeing as Tom Brady was a 6th-round pick, this is smart.

Vikings also got Teddy Bridgewater with the 32nd pick; his game production was fabulous, but Mike Mayock said he had the worst pre-draft workouts of any QB in the last decade. Norv Turner is the OC in Minnesota, which will help.

            10) Saints traded a 3rd-round pick to Arizona to move up seven slots to take WR Brandin Cooks; they lost Darren Sproles, need to get Drew Brees more weapons.

            9) Credit to Jerry Jones for not drafting Manziel; Jones is a great promoter, but from a football perspective, this would've made no sense. One way to protect your defense and your QB is to run the ball better, so drafting a tackle makes sense. You know Jones had to be tempted though; the Interweb might've exploded had Dallas taken Johnny Football.

            8) While I'm on the subject, I am adamant that Manziel will be a better pro than Blake Bortles, who went to Jacksonville. He hung 42 points on Alabama, and that sticks in my head. I think Manziel is a lot like Fran Tarkenton-- my great friend Harry Handicapper says he is more like Archie Manning, but he's a basketball coach, so we take his word with a grain of salt. (Its a joke!!!)

            7) Announcing trades as they happen adds to the draft; why the NBA refuses to do this baffles me.

            6) Giants' draftee Odell Beckham Jr went to Newman HS in New Orleans, same school as his new QB, Eli Manning.

            5) This was the first time in six years Alabama didn't have a player taken in the top ten of the draft.

            4) Michael Irvin/Marshall Faulk both made it clear that David Carr's flop in Houston makes it difficult for the Texans to draft his brother tonight. Carr is by far the best QB prospect left in the draft.

            3) I think its easier for a rookie QB to break in with a team that also has a rookie head coach, which will help the Browns and Vikings.

            2) Like the Buccaneers' new uniforms; wonder if Mike Glennon is surprised he is still Tampa Bay's QB-- there were ton of rumors that he was getting traded.

            1) I'm thinking if the NFL did its schedule after the draft, Browns might've gotten an extra primetime game. Or two.

Road dogs have another solid day against the runline

Away dogs had another solid day against the run line in Major League Baseball action on Thursday.

Road pups were able to go 6-3 against the runline yesterday, a success rate of almost 67 percent.

This continues a trend that has been going on all year, with away dogs hitting at 64 percent against the runline this season.

Orioles' Davis could begin rehab assignment Saturday

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, who is currently on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique muscle, could potentially begin a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment Saturday at one of the club's nearby affiliates. After the Orioles' 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night, manager Buck Showalter said Davis is scheduled to participate in pregame batting practice on the field before Friday’s series opener against the Houston Astros at Camden Yards.

Giants' Cain set for Saturday return

The San Francisco Giants will get a boost to their pitching rotation with the return of right-hander Matt Cain.

Cain, who landed on the disabled list after cutting his right index finger making a sandwich, will start Saturday's contest against Zack Greinke and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

                        Friday, May 9

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Reds a rare heavy favorite
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Lower Than Low

The four Thursday games with the lowest totals all finished Under on a bizarre day for bettors. San Francisco (7) defeated the Dodgers 3-1, Miami (7) downed San Diego 3-1, Baltimore (7) beat Tampa Bay 3-1 and Seattle (6.5) edged Kansas City 1-0.

                        Big Dog Eats

The Houston Astros overcame +166 odds to record a 6-2 road victory over the Detroit Tigers. It was just the second win in seven games for the Astros as underdogs of +150 or greater.

                        Unfamiliar Territory

The Cincinnati Reds are whopping -176 favorites for Friday's tilt with the visiting Colorado Rockies. It's just the second time all season the Reds have been installed as faves of -150 or greater. They fell flat in their previous outing (-172), dropping a 9-4 decision to the Chicago Cubs.

                        Pitching Notes

                        * Texas Rangers ace Yu Darvish has provided strong value for bettors of late, going 8-1 over his previous nine starts despite settling for five no-decisions over that span. Darvish and the Rangers (-148, 8.5) host the Boston Red Sox on Friday.

                        * Miami Marlins phenom Jose Fernandez makes his first career West Coast start against the San Diego Padres (+122, 5.5) Friday. Fernandez is 5-10 O/U in 15 career road starts, none further west than Arizona.

                        Hitting Notes

                        * Toronto outfielder Colby Rasmus tied for the team lead with his ninth homer in Thursday's 12-6 win over Philadelphia. The Blue Jays are just 5-4 but 8-1 O/U in games in which Rasmus goes deep entering Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels (-106, 9)

                        * Atlanta outfielder Jason Heyward went 0-for-4 in Wednesday's 7-1 loss to St. Louis and enters Friday's game against the visiting Chicago Cubs (+165, 6.5) mired in a 2-for-17 slump. His struggles have contributed to the Braves' 1-8 mark over their last nine games and their 1-5 O/U record in the previous six.

                        Total Streak

Baltimore Orioles (1-5 O/U): The Orioles pitching staff has been sensational, limiting opponents to three runs or fewer in four of their past six games. That has helped prop up an offense that has scored three runs or fewer four times over that same stretch.

                        Prop of the Day

Wagering against the longball in Toronto could be a lucrative play Friday. Bettors face +600 odds that no home runs will be hit between the Blue Jays and Angels. The Rogers Centre has been the second-most generous home run park in the majors so far in 2014.

                        Key Injuries

                        * Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis (oblique) is expected to begin a rehab assignment this weekend. The Orioles are 7-3 and +478 units with Davis on the shelf, but are just 3-7 O/U in that span.

                        * Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Juan Uribe left Thursday's loss to San Francisco with a sore right hamstring. Uribe is in a 2-for-17 slide during which the Dodgers have gone 1-4 against the moneyline and 2-3 O/U.

                        Weather Watch

                        * Wind at Citi Field will blow out to left field at 7 mph for Friday's game between the host Mets and the Phillies (+110, 7.5). Teams went 1-5 O/U in six games under similar wind conditions a season ago.

                        Umpire Note of the Day

The home team is 16-4 in umpire Will Little's last 20 games behind home plate. Little will call the balls and strikes for the game between the Giants and the Dodgers (+117, 7).

                            • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Browns' best WR Josh Gordon is headed for a year's suspension for failing drug tests, putting a damper on Cleveland's draft weekend.

-- San Francisco beat the Dodgers again; they've won seven of last eight games in LA, are now 4.5 games ahead of their highly-paid rivals.

-- Giants 1B Brandon Belt broke his left thumb, is out for a while.

-- Jedd Gyorko homered twice as the Padres beat Miami/Jose Fernandez 10-2.

                              -- Indiana 85, Washington 63-- Pacers take a 2-1 series lead.

-- David Ortiz broke up a Yu Darvish no-hitter with two out in ninth inning, but the Rangers pounded Boston, 8-0.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a rainy spring day......

                              13) TV ratings for the first night of the NFL Draft on NFL Network were up 50% from LY, ESPN’s up 48%. People love pro football.

                              12) As of 1:30 Friday, Cleveland Browns sold 2,000 new season tickets for this season, in the roughly 15 hours; if a season ticket (10 home games, counting couple preseason games) costs $1,000, then 2,000 season tickets is $2M, and that’s before any #2 jerseys are sold. Say they sell 20,000 jerseys, which is conservative at $100 profit per pop, that’s another $2M. Johnny Manziel is already earning whatever they’ll pay him.

                              11) Saw a hat chart they have at the draft for kids getting picked; Jadeveon Clowney has an 8 3/8 hat size, which is totally huge—none of those old snap-back hats would’ve fit him. Only head I’ve ever heard of that is bigger than is Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy, who apparently has an enormous size 9 head. By way of reference, my hat size is 7 ¾ and that is really big.

                              10) Nine DBs were taken in the first round this year, two more than ever before. NFL is a passing league, for sure.

                              9) With Oregon State’s job open, there are currently 11 basketball coaches in the Pac-12; none of the 11 has ever coached in the Final Four; if the Beavers hire Ben Howland, who coached UCLA in three Final Fours, they’d be the only team in the league with a Final Four coach, which would be a recruiting advantage. Howland won at Northern Arizona, so he’ll win with the Beavers, if he gets the job.

                              8) Russell Baxter points out that over the last 48 years, the Redskins have made only 23 picks in the first round. Not all of that is George Allen’s fault, either.

                              7) This is the first time since ’96-’97 that the #1 pick in the draft wasn’t a QB two years in a row; those two picks were Keyshawn Johnson/Orlando Pace.

                              6) NFL invited 30 players to come to the draft, only 21 were chosen Thursday which has to be humbling for the other nine; wonder how many of them brought a second suit?

                              5) Ryan Anderson (14.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg) transfers from Boston College to Arizona, where he can play in 2015-16. I’m surprised BC had someone Arizona would want.

                              4) Odd coincidence: Manziel, Brady Quinn and Brandon Weeden were all drafted by Cleveland with the 22nd pick in the first round. By three different GMs.

                              3) Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel is the new school president at Youngstown State; not the AD, the school president. Think the football team will get all the support it needs?

                              2) I’m sitting at work Friday and it suddenly dawned on me: two best hitters on my fantasy baseball team (Stanton/Abreu) are both going to be in the Home Run Derby, and Longoria might be in it too, which means three hours of terror for me, as I’ll be worried they’ll pull an oblique muscle trying to hit the ball from Minneapolis to St Paul. There is very little in baseball as fun as watching Stanton crush the ball, but in games, not batting practice.

                              1) The promoter in Jerry Jones had to be dying to take Manziel with his pick Thursday; he was probably envisioning all the ways they’d make a fortune together. At the end of the day though, Jones knows that winning is the best way to make a bigger fortune, so he wisely went with the offensive lineman. Would’ve been quite a show had he taken Johnny Football, though.
