Dodgers' OF Yasiel Puig, questionable Wednesday

Puig is recovering from a head injury and has missed the last two games. He is questionable for play Wednesday against the Nationals.

Mariners win fourth straight, get back above .500

Fernando Rodney was warming in the bullpen of O.co Coliseum, preparing himself for what was expected to be another nail-biter of a save situation on Tuesday night.

But teammates decided to give him a night off.

The Mariners turned a 4-3 lead into an 8-3 win, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth and rolling to an easy win over the Oakland A’s. The victory put them over .500 at 16-15 for the first time since April 15. They’ve now won four in a row and nine of their last 11 games — their best stretch of success this season. That eight-game losing streak seems like a distant memory. With a .516 winning percentage, they moved into second place in the division just ahead of Texas’ 17-16 record and .515 winning percentage. It seemed impossible two weeks ago.

RHP Leon set for long-awaited debut with A's

Right-hander Arnold Leon's long journey to the major leagues will end Wednesday when he is officially recalled from Triple-A Sacramento for the Oakland Athletics' doubleheader against the Seattle Mariners.

Leon likely will be available out of the bullpen, but there is a chance he could start the second game Wednesday. Either way, it will be a special day for Leon, whose professional career began in 2006 with Saltillo of the Mexican League at the age of 17.

Rangers 1B Moreland shines on mound

Mitch Moreland collected his fifth consecutive pinch hit Tuesday, an eighth-inning single, but that was the least interesting part of his evening.

The veteran first baseman took the mound in the bottom of the eighth with the Rangers trailing the Rockies by 11 runs. He retired three consecutive batters, and Colorado completed a 12-1 win.

Moreland became the sixth position player to pitch for the Rangers, making the seventh such appearance in franchise history. The last position player to take the mound for Texas was David Murphy on June 4, 2013, at Boston.

Moreland threw 15 pitches, 10 strikes, while getting Jordan Pacheco and Corey Dickerson to fly to right and Charlie Blackmon to hit a comebacker.

A closer at Mississippi State, Moreland made only one other professional pitching appearance before Tuesday. In 2008 at low Class A Clinton, he pitched two scoreless innings in two games.

    Pirates win on overturned call

Starling Marte begrudgingly admitted after being part of a historic moment that he is softening his stance on the use of expanded instant replay in the major leagues this season.

"I like it sometimes, I guess," the Pittsburgh Pirates left fielder said. "I like it this time."

Thanks to an overturned call, Marte wound up scoring the winning run after tripling and racing home on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Pirates edged the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Tuesday night.

It was the first time a game-ending run resulted from a changed call, and it ended the Giants' six-game winning streak.

Marte hit a drive high off the 21-foot Clemente Wall in right field with two outs off Tim Hudson (4-2). Rookie second baseman Ehire Adrianza, serving as the cutoff man, took the throw from right fielder Hunter Pence and then threw wildly to third base.

Marte initially hesitated and then raced home, but home plate Quinn Wolcott called him out. However, following a replay review of 1:14, it was ruled that catcher Buster Posey's tag was late and Marte was called safe.

NOTES: Both teams called up relief pitchers to aid bullpens that were stretched by Monday night's 12-inning game that was won by the Giants 11-10. San Francisco recalled RHP George Kontos from Triple-A Fresno and optioned RHP Jake Dunning to the same club. The Pirates recalled RHP Phil Irwin from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioned LHP Jeff Locke to the same club. ... Giants 2B Brandon Hicks was the only regular from either team who did not start following Monday night's five-hour, 29-minute game. ... Pittsburgh OF Travis Snider (two games) and C Russell Martin (one game) had the appeals of their suspensions from Major League Baseball for their actions in an April 20 brawl with the Milwaukee heard by videoconference Tuesday afternoon. ... The three-game series concludes Wednesday afternoon with San Francisco RHP Tim Lincecum (2-1, 5.12 ERA) facing Pirates RHP Gerrit Cole (2-2, 3.69 ERA).

      Wednesday, May 7

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Wainwright strong versus NL East foes
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Low in San Diego

The Padres continued trending as the best Under play in the league, moving to 8-23-3 O/U in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to visiting Kansas City. Not even lower totals have made a difference, as San Diego is now 5-9 O/U with the number set at 6.5. That's the total for Wednesday's rematch with the Royals (+101).

      Wainwright Loves the East

St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright has enjoyed success in NL East locales as he leads the Cardinals (-120, 6.5) into Atlanta as one of only two road favorites on the day. Wainwright is 6-1 in his last seven starts in NL East cities, with his only loss coming to the Braves last July 26.

      Rick the Slick

Rick Porcello and the Detroit Tigers are whopping -230 favorites against the visiting Houston Astros. Porcello has won his last four starts as a fave of -200 or more, posting a 3.12 ERA in that span while recording quality starts in each outing.

      Pitching Notes

      * San Francisco Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum has learned to make do without racking up the strikeouts, going 6-1 in his last seven starts in which he has had five or fewer Ks. The Giants (+118, 7) visit the Pittsburgh Pirates.

      * Cincinnati Reds hurler Bronson Arroyo has held opponents without a homer in back-to-back starts. He hasn't done so in three straight since the middle of the 2012 season. Arroyo and the Reds (+131, 8.5) will be in tough against the host Boston Red Sox.

      Hitting Notes

      * Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki continued his torrid hitting Tuesday, raising his average to .421 with a 3-for-4 performance in a 12-1 drubbing of the Texas Rangers. Tulowitzki has seven multi-hit efforts in the last eight games, helping the Rockies to a 7-1 O/U mark over that stretch.

      * Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is also on fire, extending his hitting streak to eight games with a 3-for-5 effort in Tuesday's 7-5 win over Milwaukee. Arizona, which is 6-1-1 O/U during that stretch, is a +128 underdog against the Brewers Wednesday.

      Total Streak

Minnesota Twins (0-6-0 O/U): The Twins have been getting sensational efforts from their pitching staff, allowing four runs or fewer in each of their past six games. Unfortunately, the offense has gone south at the same time, managing more than three runs just twice over that stretch.

      Prop of the Day

Oddsmakers aren't confident in the Oakland Athletics' ability to hang a big number on Seattle ace Felix Hernandez in the opener of their doubleheader. The Athletics are a +160 underdog to have the highest-scoring inning in that game, compared to Seattle at +125 and a tie result at +275.

      Key Injuries

      * The Baltimore Orioles are expected to place catcher Matt Wieters (elbow) on the disabled list. Wieters is hitting a career-best .341 so far this season, and the Orioles are 6-4 against the moneyline and 5-4-1 O/U in games in which he records more than one hit; they're +125 underdogs against Tampa Bay.

      * Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins is dealing with a groin injury that has limited him to pinch-hitting duty in consecutive games. The Phillies, who are 0-4 on the year in games in which Rollins has been unavailable to start, are +106 underdogs against Toronto Wednesday.

      Weather Watch

      * Fans at O.co Coliseum in Oakland will see sunny skies and wind blowing out to right field at 11 mph. Teams averaged 7.98 per game in 41 contests last season with winds blowing east to west at better than 10 mph - only slightly better than the stadium average.

      * The latest installment of the Cubs-White Sox rivalry at U.S. Cellular Field will see wind blowing in from right field at 11 mph. Teams averaged just 6.5 runs per game in six games under such conditions a season ago, well below the stadium average of 8.15.

      Umpire Note of the Day

The road team is 7-1 in umpire Todd Tichenor's last eight games behind home plate. Tichenor will call the balls and strikes for the game between the Cardinals and the Braves.

        Wednesday's Action

        May 7, 2014

Phillies at Blue Jays – 7:05 PM EST

        Probable starters:
        PHI: Lee (3-2, 3.00 ERA)
        TOR: Buehrle (5-1, 2.25 ERA)

Series recap: The Blue Jays grabbed a pair of victories at Citizens Bank Park the last two nights, including a wild 6-5 triumph in 10 innings on Tuesday. Philadelphia rallied from a 5-0 deficit to tie things up, but the Phillies finished up their six-game homestand at 2-4. Meanwhile, Toronto extended its season-high winning streak to three games to improve to 16-17.

Current form: Since the start of May, the Jays are 5-1 to the ‘over,’ but Toronto has lost five of its last seven games at Rogers Center. The Phillies have won six of their past eight contests on the highway, while Philadelphia has won all four of Lee’s road starts.

Reds at Red Sox – 7:10 PM EST

        Probable starters:
        CIN: Leake (2-3, 3.53 ERA)
        BOS: Peavy (1-1, 2.87 ERA)

Series recap: Boston built an early 3-1 lead before Cincinnati came back with a pair of runs in the eighth inning. The Sox received a walk-off single from Grady Sizemore in the 12th inning to pick up a 4-3 victory as -130 favorites, while improving to 1-3 this season at home against National League opponents.

Current form: The Reds have lost four consecutive road games, while riding a 6-1 run to the ‘under’ in the past seven away contests. Boston has hit the ‘under’ in four straight games, while the Sox are 3-1 to the ‘under’ in Peavy’s four home starts.

Cardinals at Braves – 7:10 PM EST

        Probable starters:
        STL: Wainwright (5-2, 2.16 ERA)
        ATL: Minor (0-1, 3.00 ERA)

Series recap: The Braves and Cardinals have split a pair of games decided by one run apiece, as Atlanta ended a seven-game skid in Tuesday’s 2-1 triumph. Atlanta scored three runs or less for the fifth straight contest, while going ‘under’ the total for the fifth consecutive game.

Current form: Wainwright had allowed six earned runs in his first six starts combined before giving up six earned runs in his last outing against the Cubs. The Cardinals have won 14 of Wainwright’s last 20 starts in the role of a road favorite, but St. Louis is just 1-4 on the road against left-handed starting pitchers. The Braves are listed as a home underdog for the second time this season, beating the Nationals, 10-2 as +120 ‘dogs on April 13.

Orioles at Rays – 7:10 PM EST

        Probable starters:
        BAL: Norris (2-2, 3.94 ERA)
        TB: Ramos (1-1, 2.91 ERA)

Series recap: The Orioles improved to 3-0 this season against the Rays following Tuesday’s 5-3 victory as +130 underdogs. Baltimore erased a 2-0 deficit, as the Orioles have outscored the Rays this season, 15-4 in three meetings. The win by the Orioles snapped a seven-game winning streak in this series by the home team dating back to last season.

Current form: Since a 16-1 blowout of the Yankees on April 19, the Rays have dropped four of their last five games at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay has drilled the ‘over’ in 10 of its past 12 home contests, including six straight ‘overs’ against right-handed starters at the Trop. Baltimore has cashed five of its previous seven opportunities in the road underdog role, but the O’s own a 2-6 record off an away win this season.

Cubs at White Sox – 8:10 PM EST

        Probable starters:
        CHC: Wood (2-3, 3.35 ERA)
        CWS: Danks (2-2, 5.00 ERA)

Series recap: After the Cubs took two of three from the Cardinals last weekend, the Cubs’ offense fell short in a pair of losses to the rival White Sox. The Cubs plated just two runs the last two nights, while falling to the Sox at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, 5-1 as a -135 favorite.

Current form: The Cubs are winless in Wood’s two road starts this season, while the North Siders are 2-1 on the highway against left-handed starting pitchers. The Sox are 1-5 off consecutive victories this season, while the ‘under’ has hit in six of the last seven games overall. Danks is favored for the first time in seven starts, as the Sox are 0-4 in his past four starts in the favorite role since 2013.

                  Dodgers, Giants hook up

                  May 8, 2014

                  San Francisco (21-13) at L.A. Dodgers (19-16)

First pitch: Thursday, 10:10 p.m. ET

Sportsbook.ag Line: Los Angeles -150, San Francisco +140, Total: 7.5

Two long-time rivals begin a four-game set on Thursday night when the Giants visit the Dodgers.

San Francisco has once again put a quality team forward and is currently sitting at the top of the NL West. The club has lost its past two contests, both to the Pirates, but had won 10-of-11 games previously. The Giants' pitching staff has been tremendous as usual, allowing three or fewer runs in nine of its past 12 games. San Francisco took a 4-3 loss in Wednesday’s rubber match against the Pirates, allowing two runs in each of the first two innings, then threw six scoreless frames, but could not get their offense going. 1B Brandon Belt (.266 BA) hit his ninth home run (17 RBI) in the contest and was 5-for-8 with a homer, 3 RBI, two runs, two stolen bases and two walks in the series.

Los Angeles has gone 2-4 in its past six games, and has dropped four straight series versus National League opponents. The Dodgers scored two runs in the top of the first inning on Wednesday, but were held at bay by Stephen Strasburg and Washington’s bullpen the rest of the way. Each of the top six batters in the lineup had at least one hit in the 3-2 loss against the Nationals, but they received no production from the bottom of their lineup as the 7-8-9 hitters went 0-for-11 with five strikeouts. Getting the start for the visiting Giants will be RHP Ryan Vogelsong (1-1, 4.60 ERA) as he looks to keep his team on top of the division. Opposing him for the Dodgers will be veteran RHP Josh Beckett (0-1, 3.14 ERA) who is looking for his first win on the young season.

San Francisco has been great on the road this year at 11-8, but the Dodgers have a subpar 6-9 record at home this season. The Giants are 25-18 (.581) in this matchup (12-10 on road) in the past three seasons, including going 4-2 overall this season. San Francisco has done well when the total is between 7 and 8.5 this season, going 18-7 (.720), while the Dodgers are 26-6 (.813) in home games versus NL teams allowing 3.8 or fewer runs per game on the season since the start of the 2012 campaign. OF Yasiel Puig (head) returned to the lineup for the Dodgers on Wednesday after a two-game absence.

Ryan Vogelsong has been pitching well lately, allowing one or fewer runs in three of his past four outings. After throwing seven shutout innings in a no-decision versus the Indians on April 27, he took on the Braves Saturday, holding them to just one run on five hits while recording six strikeouts (but also 4 walks) on the way to his first win of the year. He’s been much worse on the road this season, pitching to a 7.94 ERA and 2.38 WHIP, while allowing all five of his homers on the season. The Dodgers have not given Vogelsong much trouble over his career though, as he is 4-2 (8-4 team record) with a 3.34 ERA and 1.36 WHIP against them, with his team winning the past four games he has thrown against them. He faced them earlier this year on April 16, lasting six frames and giving up just four hits and a run while striking out two batters with two walks.

2B Dee Gordon (.341 BA, 20 SB) has been on fire this season, and has gone 9-for-23 (.391, 1 triple, 1 RBI) against Vogelsong, while OF Matt Kemp (7-for-23, 3 XBH, 6 RBI, 4 walks) and 3B Juan Uribe (7-for-16, 2 XBH, 1 RBI) have also had success against the righty in their careers. Meanwhile, SS Hanley Ramirez is just 2-for-17 with 3 RBI and three strikeouts in the matchup. San Francisco’s bullpen has been nearly unhittable this year, going 10-2 with a ridiculous 1.81 ERA and 0.96 WHIP while allowing just 76 hits in 109.1 innings, and going 11-for-16 in save chances. Closer Sergio Romo (1.88 ERA, 10 saves) has been perfect in his save attempts while hitters have just a .147 BABIP against him.

Josh Beckett has been dealing with injuries over the past few years, starting only eight games for the Dodgers last season. He has looked great this season though, striking out 30 batters in his first 28.2 innings on the mound while allowing just 20 hits. He has yet to earn a win on the year though, while his team is 1-4 in games that he has pitched. His last outing came against the Marlins as he went 6.2 frames, giving up eight hits and four runs in his first decision in 2014 (a loss). Beckett has had similar numbers in his career against the Giants as he has this year, going just 4-6 (4-7 team record) while sporting a solid 3.20 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. He faced them earlier this season, throwing five scoreless innings and giving up just two hits as he struck out four, but he also issued five walks.

OF Hunter Pence has been great against Beckett in 19 career at-bats, getting eight hits (.421 BA) with a homer, 2 RBI and four strikeouts. Power hitting OF Michael Morse has also done well, going 3-for-7 against him with a solo homer, but OF Angel Pagan is just 2-for-13 with three strikeouts against the veteran. The relievers for the Dodgers have combined to go 4-9 with a 3.88 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 123 innings and are 12-for-16 in save opportunities. Kenley Jansen (3.31 ERA, 11 saves) has some of the nastiest stuff in the game while going 11-for-13 in his save chances and striking out 27 batters with only seven walks in 16.1 innings.

                    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- What are NBA players going to do when Mrs Donald Sterling becomes owner of the Clippers? Under California law, it could easily happen.

-- Under State law, Oregon State has to post its basketball coaching job for a week before filling it; Ben Howland and a couple of ex-NBA coaches are interested.

-- Major league teams are 38-10 when scoring 3+ runs in the first inning; Mets are 0-3 when they do it, the other 29 teams are 38-7.

-- Penguins 4, Rangers 2-- Not only is the Rangers' power play pathetic, they gave up a shorthanded goal in this game.

-- Felix Hernandez had no strikeouts, allowed 11 hits in 6.1 IP yesterday, not a typical King Felix outing. Mariners won the game in extra innings.

-- Marlins are 16-5 at home, but now head out on road, where they're 2-10.

                    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

                    13) I enjoyed Mark Jackson’s work on ESPN; he made a great team with Jeff Van Gundy. Liked watching his Golden State Warriors play for the last three years, so I feel bad that he got fired after a 51-31 season, capping the Warriors’ best two-year run in 20 years. Lot of politics in NBA coaching; Jackson is 4th NBA coach in last two years to win 51+ games and get fired; none of the other three have been re-hired.

                    12) Golden State’s excuse is that they needed a different coach to “take them to the next level”; in other words, they don’t think Jackson is a good enough coach to win a championship. It’s the owner’s money, he can do what he wants, but not all change is positive change. Just ask the Denver Nuggets.

                    11) You wonder if religion had a role in Jackson’s firing; he is a real-life preacher; who knows what happened behind closed doors, but inference is that is was more off the court stuff than on the court that led to his dismissal. Its too bad.

                    10) Back when Billy Martin managed the A’s in 1980-81, I wondered about the same thing Golden State just did. Martin did a great job in 1980 getting the most out of what had been a moribund A’s team, but he abused the starting pitchers so badly (three different starters threw 14-inning complete games in ’80), the success was obviously not going to last.

Why not get rid of him and bring someone else in before all the pitchers got hurt? Martin was just trying to win enough games to get re-hired by the Bronx Bombers, which is what wound up happening; he was 3,000 miles away when Oakland’s pitching staff fell to pieces.

Martin was only going to bring those A’s so far; you can see, if not agree with, what the Warriors are thinking, but its on them if the team gets worse.

                    9) Lefty Alex Wood is getting no run support from the Braves; in his last four starts, Atlanta has been outscored 15-1. One run in four starts. Likewise out in San Diego, Padres were shut out in Andrew Cashner's last three starts.

                    8) Was reading this week that the crop of high school QBs in southern California this coming fall might be the best-ever in that area, which is saying something. Will be lot of stellar freshman QBs heading to college at this time next year.

                    7) Sign of the times: Guy I’m playing in fantasy baseball this week has a 4-1 record in our league, so he has one of the better teams. He has two shortstops on his team: Derek Jeter, Adeiny Hechevarria- he has Hechevarria in his lineup this week.

                    6) Former Cal football coach Jeff Tedford is the Buccaneers’ new OC; he was Aaron Rodgers’ college coach at Cal, so he knows QBs, is considered a guru of sorts. Interesting that the Bucs are rumored to be shopping Mike Glennon, which means they’re open to drafting a rookie QB. Wonder which one?

                    5) Former LSU QB Zach Mettenberger not only tore his ACL last November, he has a broken bone in one of his vertebrae which will need attention at some point, and could lead to his not even being drafted this week.

                    4) Dallas Cowboys have a pick in each of the first five rounds this week, then have six 7th round picks, which ain’t nothing, considering Tom Brady was a low 6th-round pick. That’s where your scouting department earns its money, with the third-day draft picks.

                    3) Damn, I’m getting old: this is the 20th anniversary of Marshall Faulk getting drafted. He played long enough ago that he played in a tie game in college, a San Diego State-BYU classic. There are no more tie games in college ball.

                    2) Hall of Fame manager Dick Williams would’ve turned 85 Wednesday; one of my boyhood heroes for leading the A’s to consecutive World Series titles. He led the Red Sox and Padres to World Series and the Montreal Expos to the ’81 playoffs. Just a tremendous manager.

                    1) When exactly did Steve Kerr become Red Auerbach? I like the guy, think he’s great on TV, seems a normal person for a celebrity, but now he’s getting mentioned for every NBA opening like he’s a combination of Pat Riley and Chuck Daly. Does Utah really think he would consider going there? Please.

White Sox Adam Dunn, questionable Thursday

Dunn has missed the last two with tightness in his calf and is questionable to play Thursday against the Cubs.

Wind, thunderstorms on tap at Rangers Ballpark

Weather forecasts are calling for potential thunderstorms in Arlington for Thursday's game between the Colorado Rockies and Texas Rangers.

According to DailyBaseballData.com, there is up to a 70 percent possibility of thunderstorms prior to the game, which decreases to a 30 percent chance by gametime.

Forecasts are also calling for winds blowing in from right field at 15 mph.

Thursday's scheduled pitchers are Franklin Morales for the Rockies and Matt Harrison for the Rangers.

A's lose two to injuries in doubleheader split

Wednesday was filled with good news and bad for the Oakland A's.

The Athletics split a doubleheader with the Seattle Mariners, losing the opener 6-4 in 10 innings but winning the second game 2-0. They lost center fielder Coco Crisp to a strained neck and reliever Ryan Cook to a strained forearm in the opener, but they got a spectacular outing in Game 2 from reliever Drew Pomeranz, who threw five shutout innings in his first start for Oakland.

In the opener, the A's scored four runs and had 11 hits against Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, their nemesis, knocking him out of the game with a three-run rally in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. However, for just the third time in his career, Hernandez didn't strike out a single batter. Yet the A's lost.

Orioles' Wieters gets good news about sore elbow

A visit to Dr. James Andrews always sparks a certain dread in the baseball player and his organization.

Catcher Matt Wieters and the Baltimore Orioles felt a lot better Wednesday, however. The orthopedic surgeon based in Pensacola, Fla., diagnosed an irregularity in an MRI of his right elbow taken on Monday as an aggravation of an old injury of the flexor mass -- perhaps from Wieters' time as a pitcher at Georgia Tech. Andrews suggested rest.

Wieters, who is second in the American League in batting at .341, did not start on Wednesday. The 27-year-old Gold Glover and All-Star has thrown out just one of 12 attempted basestealers this season after erasing 35 percent last season. He had allowed five steals against Minnesota in the previous series and had been complaining of soreness in mid-April.
