      Friday, May 2

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Friday's MLB betting cheat sheet
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Rocky Mountain High

A late New York Mets rally allowed the Colorado Rockies to remain one of the strongest Over plays in the National League. New York scored four times in the final two innings of a 7-4 loss in Colorado, improving the Rockies to 19-9-2 O/U.

      Dueling Aces

The low total of the day (6.5) belongs to the matchup between Washington's Stephen Strasburg and Philadelphia's Cliff Lee. But Under bettors beware: Strasburg is 5-1 O/U in his first six starts on the season, while Lee is 3-2-1 O/U.

      Road Rules

Road favorites have come through in a big way so far in 2014, going 71-53 against the moneyline. There are three road faves on Friday's schedule: St. Louis (-165) visiting the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers (-128) in Miami, and Seattle (-184) playing in Houston.

      Pitching Notes

      * San Francisco hurler Tim Lincecum has provided plenty of value away from AT&T Park of late, leading the Giants to a 5-1 mark in his last six appearances as a road underdog. Lincecum and the Giants are +135 for Friday's game in Atlanta.

      * Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole was the hottest Over play in the majors for a stretch, but that trend may be shifting. Cole, who has gone Under in back-to-back starts following seven straight Over, will face Brandon Morrow and the Toronto Blue Jays (+132, 7.5) in Friday's series opener.

      Hitting Notes

      * Braves outfielder B.J. Upton homered in Thursday's 5-4 loss to Miami, marking the first time the Braves have lost a game in which Upton goes deep. Yet, while Atlanta dropped to 9-1 overall in games featuring an Upton homer, its streak of Overs in such situations remained intact at 10-0 O/U.

      * Mets third baseman David Wright is just 4-for-35 over his last nine games, during which New York has gone 2-5-2 O/U.

      Total Streaks

Miami Marlins (4-1-1 O/U): The Marlins closed out an impressive sweep of the visiting Braves Thursday, racking up 23 runs in three games against one of the most impressive pitching rotations in baseball.

      Prop of the Day

The Chicago White Sox are installed as a +100 underdog to be the last team to score a run in Friday's game against the host Cleveland Indians. The White Sox lead the majors with 67 runs scored from the seventh inning on.

      Injury Watch

      * Cincinnati Reds speedster Billy Hamilton is expected to miss a couple of days with sprained knuckles. Hamilton is among the league leaders with 11 stolen bases. The Reds are 7-2 and 3-6 O/U in games in which he swipes at least one bag.

      Weather Watch

      * It could be a high-scoring day at Wrigley Field between the Cubs and the Cardinals. The wind is expected to blow out to center field at 11 mph. Teams averaged better than 13 runs per game last season when the wind was blowing in that direction.

      * The Boston Red Sox and visiting Oakland Athletics may also see a bump in scoring. With the wind expected to blow out to right field at 9 mph, teams combined to average 10.38 runs in 20 games in 2013 when the wind blew out in that direction.

      Umpire Stat of the Day

The home team is 6-0 in umpire Jerry Layne's last six games behind home plate. Layne will work the balls and strikes for Cincinnati's series opener against visiting Milwaukee.

          Report: Tigers announcing Hanrahan signing

The Detroit Tigers scheduled a press conference for noon ET Friday, expecting to announce the signing of two-time All-Star reliever Joel Hanrahan, according to CBSSports.com.

Hanrahan, a former closer, has 100 career saves and was an All-Star in 2011 and '12 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. It is assumed he will set up closer Joe Nathan, whom the Tigers signed in the offseason.

The Tigers' bullpen has struggled with a combination of injuries and ineffectiveness. Hanrahan figures to be a significant help as a bridge to Nathan in the late innings. Detroit's bullpen owns a 5.37 ERA, which is 29th in the major leagues.

Hanrahan, 32, threw for about 20 teams during a recent workout and is a year removed from having Tommy John surgery.

Carlos Gonzalez sidelined with finger injury

Before Carlos Gonzalez belted his sixth home run of the season in the first inning on Thursday night, a foul ball dealt him what was later diagnosed as a left index finger contusion.

Gonzalez was replaced with pinch-hitter Brandon Barnes in the fourth inning of the Rockies' eventual 7-4 victory over the Mets, but neither he nor the Rockies believe the injury to be serious. The finger was still swollen by game's end, but it had already improved.

Gonzalez suffered a ligament strain of his right middle finger last July, and it severely curtailed his playing time and effectiveness. Thursday's injury, he said, was nothing like that.

The Rockies announced that his availability would be assessed day to day, but manager Walt Weiss doesn't think the outfielder will be out of the lineup for long.

Wind blowing out at Wrigley Field

The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals will get a three-game series underway at Wrigley Field Friday and pitchers will have some hitter-friendly wind to compete with.

According to DailyBaseballData.com, weather forecasts are calling for wind to blow out to right-center field at 13 mph.

Adam Wainwright is scheduled to get the start for the Cardinals, while Travis Wood is slated to get the ball for the Cubs.

              A's visit Red Sox

              May 2, 2014

              Oakland (18-10) at Boston (13-16)

              First pitch: 7:10 p.m. ET

              Sportsbook.ag Line: Boston -120, Oakland +110, Total: 9

The Red Sox look to get their season back on the right track when they begin a three-game series against the AL West-leading Athletics on Friday night.

There was a lot of worry that Oakland would not be able to perform as well this year with two of its top starting pitchers (Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin) having Tommy John surgery and missing the season, but the franchise showed its depth at all positions and lead the division early on. The Athletics are coming off a huge series against the Rangers, as they outscored them 25-4 during a three-game sweep. Their biggest win came on Wednesday as they out-hit Texas 17-4 in a 12-1 rout the saw Oakland bat 8-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Boston’s season has not been going as well, and in the wake of its World Series title, the club currently sits at the bottom of the AL East standings after losing its most recent series to a struggling Tampa Bay club.

The Sox won the first of the three games on Tuesday by a score of 7-4, but then were swept in the double-header on Thursday, losing each game by just one run. Boston took a 5-4 lead into the eighth inning of the second game, but its usually exceptional bullpen allowed a run in each of the final two frames in the loss. OF Shane Victorino was 2-for-4 with two doubles in the second game on Thursday and now has five doubles among his first eight hits in the 27 at-bats since returning from the DL. Getting the start on Friday for the visiting A's will be RHP Dan Straily (1-1, 5.14 ERA) as he opposes RHP Clay Buchholz (1-2, 6.66 ERA) for the Red Sox. It seems that Oakland has actually preferred playing on the road so far this year, going 12-4 away from home. On the other hand, Boston is just 6-10 when playing at Fenway Park so far. This matchup has been dominated by Oakland since the start of 2012, as it is 11-4 against Boston, but just 3-3 in Fenway. The Athletics have also been tremendous after playing four or more consecutive road games over the past three seasons with a 63-34 record (.649). Meanwhile, the Red Sox are 23-5 (.821) in this same three-year timeframe when Buchholz is pitching with the line between -100 and -150.

Dan Straily has been Oakland’s worst starter so far this year and he would not even be in the rotation if it were not for injuries. He did pitch well in his first full season as a starter last year though, going 10-8 in 27 starts with a 3.96 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 7.3 K/9. He has really struggled with home runs this year, allowing seven so far in just 28 innings of work, and the long-ball reared its ugly head once again in his most recent outing against the Astros last Saturday. In that start, Straily allowed just four hits in 6.1 IP, but two of the hits left the park, and he ended up allowing three runs while striking out seven with two walks in a no-decision. This will be his first start against the Red Sox, who have some big power hitters to watch out for in DH David Ortiz (5 HR) and 1B Mike Napoli (5 HR), but the team has hit just 22 homers, ranking 12th-worst in the league.

Boston will certainly put the pressure on Straily to throw strikes though, as it is one of the most patient teams in baseball, walking 10.9% of the time (3rd in majors). The Athletics pitching staff as a whole has been spectacular, and especially their bullpen, which has gone 7-6 with a 2.65 ERA and 1.13 WHIP, but has been able to convert just 5-of-10 save opportunities. In the ninth inning, Oakland uses Luke Gregerson (3.07 ERA, 3 saves), Jim Johnson (5.25 ERA, 1 save) and Sean Doolittle (5.68 ERA, 1 save) depending on the situation.

After pitching to an amazing 12-1 record over 16 starts with a 1.74 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 2013, Clay Buchholz looked to be an ace for the Sox pitching staff. He has disappointed greatly so far this season though, allowing six runs in two of his starts already, while having just four strikeouts and four walks in his past two outings spanning 9.1 innings. Besides the two six-run games, he has quality starts in the other three, and pitched seven innings while giving up six hits and three runs in his first win of the season against Toronto in his last start on Saturday, finishing that game with six shutout innings. He has been lit up in his six starts against the Athletics in his career with a 2-2 record (3-3 team record) and a 7.90 ERA and 2.23 WHIP, while getting lucky with his offense giving him huge run support in each of the past two contests. In those games, he pitched a combined 11.1 innings, allowing 15 hits and 12 runs (11 ER), but his team was 2-0, as they scored 19 runs in those two games.

OF Coco Crisp (4-for-13, 1 HR, 4 RBI) and 1B Daric Barton (4-for-9, 4 RBI, 5 walks) have seen the ball very well against the young righty, while OF Yoenis Cespedes (0-for-3) and DH Alberto Callaspo (4-for-20) have not. The Red Sox relievers have been nearly as good as their opponents, combining to go 4-4 with a 3.25 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and are 8-for-10 in save chances. Closer Koji Uehara (1.69 ERA, 6 saves) allowed his second home run and first loss of the season on Thursday night, but has been perfect in six save chances while having 17 strikeouts and just one walk over 10.2 frames.

                Who's Cold - American League

                May 2, 2014

Three of the teams which made the playoffs last season in the American League aren't anywhere near doing well for their MLB betting fans. Check out the teams in the AL that are burning the biggest holes in your pockets.

Cleveland Indians (11-17, -$783) – The Tribe are coming off of a god awful West Coast swing in which their offense was nowhere to be found. They scored just 13 runs over the course of the six games, which isn't going to cut it. The starting pitching staff just hasn't been all that efficient either. Things need to pick up in Cleveland in a hurry, because this division isn't going to end up waiting around for the Indians to get back in the swing of things. There are just far too many good teams to deal with.

Tampa Bay Rays (13-16, -$761) – The Rays swept a day/night doubleheader at Fenway Park on Thursday to get them out of a bit of a slump. The difference between this season and previous campaigns for Tampa Bay is that this year's team just doesn't seem to have enough pitching to win. Matt Moore, Jeremy Hellickson, and Alex Cobb are all on the DL at the moment for long periods of time, and Manager Joe Maddon is stuck having to cut and paste a starting staff together. It's not working all that well right now, though the men who were thrown into the mix on Thursday got the job done against the Red Sox.

Boston Red Sox (13-16, -$746) – We're not really all that sure just how good these Red Sox are this year. They've got a great starting pitching staff, but they aren't all that fantastic in the batting lineup this year without Jacoby Ellsbury in the fold. The team is batting just .243 and is averaging just a tick over four runs per game, but that isn't going to be good enough at this level. The Sox are finding themselves in a lot of trouble on the MLB betting lines because they are constantly big time favorites. They're just 6-10 so far on the campaign at home. About the only good news is that no one has asserted itself as the big dog in the AL East, and until that happens, there are only three games separating first and last place. There's plenty of time for Boston to build an identity.

                        Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Damian Lillard buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer as Portland beat Houston by a point, 99-98, ending a great series in six games. Six fun games to watch.

-- Brooklyn/Dallas forced Game 7's on Sunday; between today and tomorrow, five elimination games, just like the NCAA tournament, only with rich guys playing.

-- White Sox have already used nine starting pitchers in their first 30 games.

-- Miami Marlins are 13-4 at home, 2-10 on the road. Go figure.

-- Twins-Dodgers nightcap Wednesday had 19 walks, but none of those 19 scored, which seems inconceivable, but thats what happened.

-- Last time there was a big league game with no strikeouts? Detroit-Toronto, back in 1985. Walt Terrell/Luis Leal the starting pitchers.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: DDLohaus analyzes the Kentucky Derby

                        Happy Spring Everyone!

I went through all my data and charts and narrowed my selections to the following four horses…listen, California Chrome checks all the boxes and is a legit favorite but there is no way I will take short odds in this race…with that said I am going to get right to it…

Samraat: Honest horse who really hasn’t done anything wrong; last showed his grit; home track (Aqu) and distance a bit of a question but I think this guy is worth a play…

Wildcat Red: Like his breeding and think he will be OK stretching out; ran second to Constitution who would be a solid contender here; must admit I am puzzled by all the rider changes but I am willing to give him a shot

Chitu: Has been handling the added distance each race without issue and I think he will use his speed to get position and get first run turning for home

Tapiture: Willing to throw out last and just missed against a potential winner (Hopportunity). Has won here before.

                        The Bets:

                        $20W Chitu
                        $15W Samraat
                        $5 WPS Tapiture/Wildcard Red
                        $2ExBX Chitu/Samraat/Tapiture/Wildcard Red
                        $1TriBX Chitu/Samraat/Tapiture/Wildcat Red

                        Total: $137.00
