      Phillies, Rangers finish series

      April 2, 2014

Philadelphia Phillies (1-1) at Texas Rangers (1-1)

      Time: Wednesday, 8:00 p.m. ET
      Sportsbook.ag Line: Texas -170, Philadelphia +160, Total: 9.5

The Phillies and Rangers wrap up their first series of the 2014 season when they play the rubber match of their three-game set on Wednesday night.

Philadelphia's big acquisitions in the offseason were surprising as the team added even more age to its veteran club with OF Marlon Byrd (36 years old) and RHP A.J. Burnett (37 years old). Of the eight offensive players that started on Opening Day for the Phils, five were over the age of 34, but this group has shown that they still have signs of life with 16 runs on 25 hits in the first two games.

Texas made news in its offseason when it dealt Ian Kinsler for big-bopper 1B Prince Fielder, while also adding free agent OF Shin-Soo Choo in an attempt to bolster its offense. With 13 runs and 24 hits over the first two games, scoring runs won't be a problem for the Rangers. But injuries to three of their starting pitchers (Yu Darvish, Matt Harrison, Derek Holland) have given them limited pitching depth, and players like Joe Saunders and Robbie Ross will need to fill the void for the time being.

The visiting Phillies will be sending veteran RHP Kyle Kendrick (10-13, 4.70 ERA in 2013) to the mound while Texas will send the aforementioned youngster, LHP Robbie Ross (4-2, 3.03 ERA as a reliever in 2013), to the bump, as he tries to win the series for his team. Before this three-game set, these two clubs had not faced each other since 2011, when the Phillies won 2-of-3 games at home. On the road last season, Philadelphia really struggled with a 30-51 record (.370), while the Rangers had a strong 46-36 home record (.561).

Kyle Kendrick has been a solid innings-eater for the Phillies for years now and topped 180 frames for the second time in his career last season. He added a curveball to his repertoire during Spring Training, and it seemed to improve his game as he went 1-0 with a 2.81 ERA (1.25 WHIP) and 13 strikeouts in 16 innings. Kendrick has yet to face the Rangers, but has gone toe-to-toe with some of the players on the roster and a few of them have taken him to the woodshed.

In their careers, 1B Prince Fielder (3-for-5, 1 HR, 5 RBI), OF Shin-Soo Choo (2-for-8, 2 HR, 4 RBI) and 3B Adrian Beltre (2-for-4, 2 doubles) have all had success in the matchup.

The Phillies bullpen really had its struggles in 2013, having the fourth-worst ERA (4.19) while going 25-26 and converting only 32-of-48 save opportunities (67%). This season has been no different, as the relievers have already allowed four runs on six hits and six walks in 6.1 innings (5.69 ERA, 1.90 WHIP). Closer Jonathan Papelbon (5-1, 2.92 ERA in 2013) has been one of the best ninth-inning pitchers for nearly a decade and has 286 saves in 326 chances (88%) in his career, but saved fewer than 30 games (29) last year for the first time since 2005.

Robbie Ross has spent the last two seasons with the Rangers as a relief pitcher, throwing in 123 games (127.1 IP) over that time. He was effective in that role with a 2.62 ERA and 25 holds, but injuries to several arms in the Texas rotation forced Ross back to his original role he had when he first joined the organization. Ross last started when he made six starts for the Texas Double-A affiliate in 2011, going 1-1 with a 2.81 ERA and 8.4 K/9. He also started three times this spring, pitching seven scoreless innings while striking out eight batters in his last appearance.

Philadelphia’s offense has been hot so far against Texas’ shallow rotation while having 17 hits over the first two games of the series and should be fresh in the beginning of the season while having plenty of aging players.

The Rangers actually boasted one of the best relief corps in the league last season, pitching to a 35-18 record and 2.91 ERA (4th in league) while converting 46-of-57 saves (81%). RHP Joakim Soria (1-0, 3.80 ERA in 2013) has not pitched more than 25 innings since 2011, but is an experienced closer with 160 saves in 180 opportunities (89%) between 2007 and 2011 with the Royals, and earned the win for Texas on Tuesday night. However, the 'pen has been shaky in the two games with a 7.56 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in 8.1 innings.

          Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Coaching records of people from the Duke coaching tree.........

-- Mike Brey, 399-211-- Only guy on list who didn't play for Duke.

-- Tommy Amaker, 315-209-- Struggled at Seton Hall/Michigan, found good spot at Harvard.

-- Jeff Capel, 161-92-- Made NCAAs three times in nine years (VCU/Okla).

-- Quin Snyder 126-91-- Drifting thru NBA assistant coaching ranks after he got fired by Missouri for committing NCAA violations.

-- Johnny Dawkins 117-87-- Made NCAAs for first time this season.

-- Chris Collins 10-19-- Supposedly had a big recruiting year.

-- Bobby Hurley 19-10-- My guess as to who will replace Krzyzewski.

          *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.........

          13) Aaron Harang/Matt Garza both had no-hitters thru six innings at Miller Park Wednesday; Chris Johnson homered in 7th, Braves won 1-0.

          12) What are the odds the first Eagle-Redskin game is in primetime? Schedule is going to be released in mid-to-late April, always a fun day.

          11) NBA referee Dick Bavetta worked his 2,633rd consecutive game last night; he is 74 years old, and still reffing NBA games. Wow.

          10) Odd trivia: Bartolo Colon pitched against the Nationals last night, who are now managed by Matt Williams. Colon's major league debut was April 4, 1997, for the Indians, whose third baseman that night was......Matt Williams.

          9) Bryce Harper is still the youngest guy in the major leagues.

          8) A's got hosed on a replay call Wednesday afternoon, which begs the question, are they letting people know which umps are reviewing which game in New York?

My point is this: Angel Hernandez hasn't umpired yet, which means he is in New York doing replay reviews. Hernandez and Bob Melvin don't get along well; I do not want him deciding critical plays in A's games. Ever.

          7) Houston hired Kelvin Sampson, Washington State hired Ernie Kent, couple of retreads getting jobs. From what I read, Sampson is set up to win right away with the Cougars-- they've got lot of players coming back next year, and Sampson is a proven winner at this level-- he just has to abide by NCAA rules.

Being ironical department: AD at Houston has a degree from Indiana, which was the last college job Sampson had.

          6) How do these guys get jobs and not Ben Howland, who has been in three Final Fours and won the Pac-12 regular season thirteen months ago at UCLA?

          5) Since 2000, Michigan State has been in the most Final Fours (5), followed by Florida, UConn and North Carolina with four each.

          4) Over the last five years, under is 96-64 with Phil Cuzzi behind the plate. Over last three years, home underdogs are 6-22 with John Tumpane behind the dish.

          3) Tampa Bay Rays gave pitcher Chris Archer six years, $25.5M; Archer has a career record of 10-10 in 27 career starts. Lot of calculated risk there.

          2) Knicks won, Atlanta lost; both teams are both 10 games under .500, tied for the #8 slot and last playoff berth in the East. Dallas is 44-31, on the outside looking in on the western side. Doesn't seem right.

          1) Major league baseball players get $99 a day on the road in meal money; NBA guys gets $124 a day. $124 buys an awful lot of pizza.

Quick story before I go: In 1974, A's brought up Claudell Washington, who went on to a 17-year big league career. That first year, Washington ate fast food, and with his leftover meal money, bought himself a mink coat. The big leagues are fun.

                        Thursday, April 3

Rays, Archer reach agreement on six-year deal

Second-year starting pitcher Chris Archer and the Tampa Bay Rays agreed to a six-year contract worth $25.5 million that includes team options to tie Archer through the team through 2021.

Archer, who starts his first game of the season and 28th of his career Thursday, was acquired in 2011 in a trade with the Chicago Cubs that shipped Matt Garza out of Tampa.

He finished third Rookie of the Year voting last season behind teammate Wil Myers. Archer was 9-7 with a 3.22 ERA in 23 starts last season.

Diamondbacks happy to see Delgado on the mound

Though it's early, not a lot has gone the D-backs way so far this season. They've already manged to amass a 1-3 record.

Randall Delgado will take to the mound Thursday, which should bring some relief for Arizona. In the D-backs past seven games with Delgado starting, the team has walked away with a win in six of those. Arizona has also had opposing pitcher, Tim Lincecum's, number taking six of the past eight when he is on the mound.

Darvish expected back in the rotation Sunday

Good news for the Texas Rangers as Yu Darvish will make his first start of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday.

Darvish had to delay his initial start due to neck stiffness. After throwing an 86-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and feeling no pain Wednesday, the Rangers didn't hesitate to put him back on the mound.

Darvish was 13-9 with a 2.84 ERA and 277 strikeouts while finishing second in Cy Young voting last season.
