MLB's hottest/coldest baseball bets in Opening Week
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some teams seem to always be ready to go from Game 1 while others need a while to shake off the winter rust. Here are three teams that have been sharp during Opening Week of the season:

Stats as of past 11 seasons

        Best Opening Week

Los Angeles Dodgers (38-28 in Opening Week)

Opening opponents: at San Diego, vs. San Francisco

The Dodgers have technically already opened the 2014 campaign, going Down Under for two wins against Arizona. Los Angeles continues to be a solid bet out of the gate, going 4-2 in its first two series of the schedule last spring. The Dodgers, however, are overwhelming World Series faves and carry some hefty price tags. They were -116 and -162 favorites in the wins over the Diamondbacks.

Oakland Athletics (38-28 in Opening Week)

Opening opponents: vs. Cleveland, vs. Seattle

The A’s are known for their late-season pushes, turning up the intensity in the home stretch of the schedule. But Oakland is just as good out of the blocks, winning 58 percent of its Opening Week games over the past 11 seasons. The Athletics went 5-2 in their first two series last April, outscoring opponents 38-22 in that span. However, four of those games came against the Astros.

Cincinnati Reds (37-26 in Opening Week)

Opening opponents: vs. St. Louis, at N.Y. Mets

The Reds head into the 2014 season minus fireballer Aroldis Chapman, who took a nasty line drive to the face in Cactus League action. Cincinnati was able to get the ball rolling with a 4-2 record in its opening series last year, but those games all came at home. The Reds cooled off once it hit the bricks in the next week. Cincy splits Opening Week at home versus the Cardinals and on the road against the Mets.

        Worst Opening Week

Philadelphia Phillies (23-26 in Opening Week)

Opening opponents: at Texas, at Chi. White Sox

Even when the Phillies were a force to be reckoned with in the National League, they sputtered to start the year. Philadelphia couldn’t get out of that rut last spring, posting a 2-4 record in its opening two series, and things never really came around. The Phillies are expected to float in the middle of the league this season and begin the schedule on the road in interleague action.

Washington Nationals (26-36 in Opening Week)

Opening opponents: at N.Y. Mets, vs. Atlanta

Washington is putting a disappointing 2013 behind it. The Nationals are expected to contend for the NL East title, with a strong rotation and a new manager in Matt Williams. They jumped out to a strong 4-2 start last spring but have historically been a bad bet during Opening Week.

Cleveland Indians (26-34 in Opening Week)

Opening opponents: at Oakland, vs. Minnesota

Cleveland is turning the ship around but many expect a bit of a step back for the Tribe in 2014. The Indians were 3-3 out of the blocks last spring, splitting road wins and losses with the Blue Jays and Rays. Cleveland opened in Oakland, which is among the best Opening Week bets in baseball.

          MLB

          Tuesday, April 1

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Three MLB pitchers primed for a breakout in 2014
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scott Kazmir, Oakland Athletics (+0.75 units in 2013)

Last season, Kazmir posted some of his best numbers since 2008. A 9.23 K/9 and a BB/9 of 2.68. The last two seasons, Kazmir threw 145-plus innings were in 2009 and 2010. His K/9 during those two seasons were 5.58 and 7.15, respectively, and he also walked 4.74 and 3.67 per nine innings. For a future Kazmir owner, this increase in K/9 and decrease in BB/9 is a good thing.

His season-long improvement in the K/9 category was due to his performance in the second half of the season. His 10.25 strikeouts per nine innings ranked him sixth overall in that category. That’s a juicy number, but it’s not all about strikeouts and walks in fantasy baseball.

Kazmir posted a 4.04 ERA in a season where his BABIP was almost 19 points higher than his career average. There is reason to believe that his season could have gone better with a little better luck in that department, and his SIERRA/xFIP both show that. It's worth noting that, while both stats look at different on field occurrences, his SIERRA and xFIP were below 3.50. His SIERRA (3.45) and xFIP (3.36) were actually his career best numbers.

Danny Salazar, Cleveland Indians (-1.25 units in 2013)

When I think of breakouts, I think Matt Harvey. He made 10 starts in 2012 and showed a ton of talent. Then 2013 happened, and the dude is starting the All-Star game and making hilarious videos. Well, America, Matt Harvey 2.0 has arrived. His name is Danny Salazar, and he makes me all tingly.

          The similarities between the two are shocking. In his 10 2012 starts, Harvey had a 2.73 ERA, 3.30 FIP, 10.62 K/9 and a 3.94 BB/9. In his 10 2013 starts, Salazar finished with a 3.12 ERA, 3.16 FIP, 11.25 K/9 and a 2.60 BB/9.

Salazar throws straight gas (average fastball velocity of 96.2 mph) and has a pretty dirty changeup, so he should be able to keep his K/9 at least around 10 over the course of an entire season. Give this guy 33 starts, and he'll be a top-of-the-line starter in no time.

Taijuan Walker, Seattle Mariners (+0.81 units)

Last season in the minors, Walker had 160 strikeouts over 141 1/3 innings, good for a 10.19 K/9. His ERA was 2.93 over 25 starts, but most of that came from quality starts at AA. At the AAA level, his ERA jumped to 3.61. His WHIP was a respectable 1.12 at both levels as well.

Walker's stats might not jump off the page, but it's what you'd expect out of a prospect that is wanted at the major-league level. He improved from Year 1 to Year 2 in Double-A, and probably would have done the same if able to stay at the Triple-A level.

Walker will need to improve on going deeper into games to fully succeed in the majors, but if he can keep his WHIP down and his ERA at a manageable level (don't forget what division he is in), he could provide just enough juice for the Mariners.

Oakland drops their tenth-straight Opening Day

Though the Oakland A's look to be a good team this season, and expected to be in a dogfight in the AL West, they have not started a season on the right foot in a decade.

With a 2-0 loss to the Cleveland Indians, the Oakland A's have now dropped their past 10 Opening Day contests. In those 10 games the A's have been outscored 58-39, including failing to tally a run in the past two seasons.

The A's will play the second game of the three game series against the Indians Tuesday as -136 favs.

Favs enjoy a big Opening Day

If you were looking for big upsets on MLB's Opening Day, you are going to have to wait until next season. Of the 13 games in the MLB on Monday, the favorite took nine of the games.

The four underdogs winners were the Milwaukee Brewers, Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners and the Cleveland Indians. Of these four teams only the Indians offered odds better that +106 for bettors, who were +129 dogs to the Oakland A's.

                  Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Dodgers have $81M worth of players.......on the disabled list.

-- Nets are 30-12 in their last 42 games, winning 14 in a row at home.

-- Last rainout in Oakland was May 5, 1998; A's-Indians play a day/night twinbill in Oakland Wednesday.

-- A's have now lost last 10 season openers, scoring 13 runs total.

-- Jays-Rays drew 11,113 in St Pete Tuesday; Cubs averaged over 14,000 fans per game in spring training.

-- Minnesota-SMU is the NIT final in New York Thursday night.

                  *****

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud....

                  13) Not sure if it was an April Fools’ joke or not, but there were rumors on a Syracuse-based website Tuesday morning that Jim Boeheim had met with Phil Jackson and is being considered for the Knicks’ anticipated coaching vacancy, with Mike Hopkins taking over at Syracuse. If you think about it, it makes some sense, but it would still be gigantic news that would create significant subplots.

                  12) Neil Walker’s walk-off HR in Pirates’ 1-0 win Monday was just the second walk-off HR ever in an Opening Day 1-0 game, the other being Bob Bailey off of Juan Marichal on April 12, 1965.

                  Two points about that:
-- Iin 1965, Opening Day was April 12, not March 31.
-- Juan Marichal was a (great) starting pitcher. For better or worse, pitchers threw complete games back then.

                  11) Marquette hired Steve Wojciehowski as coach, meaning that in this space tomorrow there will be a study of how former Dukies have done as head coaches. I’ll say this as an early prediction: when Mike Krzyzewski leaves Duke, it becomes a bad job, at least for a while.

It’ll be worse than replacing John Wooden at UCLA, since LA is a recruiting hotbed, while Duke has ton of competition for recruits and their field house ain’t so great, which no one talks about right now.

                  10) ESPN.com reports that the basketball sneaker companies did $3.3B in sales LY, up 19% from 2012. They didn’t report that $50 of that $3.5B came from me. Black adidas high tops. Old school.

                  9) Read an article this week on fivethirtyeight.com about how little actual impact baseball managers have on their teams.

Maybe this is true during the three hours the actual game is being played, but it is impossible to quantify the effect a skipper has on a team, before, after games, on road trips, spring training, setting the overall tone for a team (see Valentine, Bobby/2012 Red Sox).

I root for the A’s, who went from Bob Geren to Bob Melvin as manager, which is like going from the ugliest girl in the room to Cameron Diaz.

Believe me, who the manager is matters. A lot.

                  8) Golf Channel has to stop showing Eldrick Woods in commercials, since he doesn’t play anymore. Now he’s having back surgery and will miss the Masters for first time in 20 years. He’s becoming the Jose Reyes of golf.

                  Some notes on umpire trends……..
                  7) You see Lance Barksdale umping behind the plate, look extra hard at the home team; over the last seven years, the home side is 148-71, for a profit of $5,054 on a $100 wager.

                  6) Quite the opposite if Gary Cederstrom or Paul Emmel is working the plate. Over the last four years, home sides are 59-74 (-$3,855) in Cederstrom games. Over the last six years, home teams are 97-101 (-$2,962) if Emmel is behind the plate. Studying umpires can be a profitable activity.

                  5) Over the last five seasons, favorites are 101-53 with Marty Foster behind the plate, 68-32 at home, 33-21 on the road.

Now some of those losing favorites might be heavy favorites (none last year were more than -$160) but still, 101-53 is going to be a profitable trend.

                  4) Over the last four seasons, home dogs are 14-34 with Tom Hallion behind the plate. Interesting numbers.

                  3) In the 80’s, Donald Trump owned the New Jersey Generals of the USFL, who had Doug Flutie/Herschel Walker. Now there are rumblings that Trump might invest in the Bills to help keep them in western New York.

Not sure the NFL is ready to have Trump and Jerry Jones in the same room anytime soon.

                  2) Thoughts and prayers to Angels’ batting coach Don Baylor, who broke his leg while catching the ceremonial first pitch in Anaheim Monday night. Baylor had cancer in his bone marrow ten years ago, so the concern is obvious. We wish him well.

                  1) Closer to home for me, I'd appreciate it if you said a prayer for my dad, if you're inclined to pray. He is 88 years old and is struggling with his health; his mind is sharp, he still is happy when the Mets win, but his body doesn't do all the things it is supposed to. He's a good guy, he deserves better.

A's, Indians to play two Wednesday after washout

For the first time in Oakland Coliseum history, there will be a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday.

The Oakland A's were rained out Tuesday for the first time at home since May 5, 1998, so they will play the Cleveland Indians twice to finish the season-opening series. The games will be at 12:30 and 6 p.m. PDT.

The Indians are sticking with their scheduled starters, Corey Kluber -- who was slated to go on Tuesday -- and Zach McAllister, in that order. But the A's will mix things up because they do not have a day off later in the week.

Scott Kazmir, who played for the Indians last season, will start the first game -- he had been on tap to go Tuesday.

Jesse Chavez was scheduled to start Wednesday for Oakland, but by pushing him to Thursday, the A's will have enough starters for the rest of the week. They will bring up a starter from Triple-A Sacramento for the second game against the Indians. In split doubleheaders, teams are allowed to add a 26th man to the roster.

Dodgers' Kershaw faces 2-3 weeks of rehab

Los Angeles ace left-hander Clayton Kershaw will need another two to three weeks of rehab before a swollen muscle in his upper back is re-evaluated, the Dodgers announced Tuesday.

Kershaw was placed on the disabled list Sunday and is eligible to be activated on April 14, but it is unlikely that the 2013 National League Cy Young Award winner will be ready to pitch, according to manager Don Mattingly.

"This thing is going to take some time," Mattingly said.

Kershaw's rehab will include a submaximal throwing program for the next two to three weeks. Mattingly expects Kershaw to make a rehab start before returning to the Dodgers' rotation.

An MRI revealed Kershaw's injury after he was scratched from a scheduled start on Sunday night against the San Diego Padres.
