NBA March Madness Makeover: Who wins an NCAA style tournament?
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This time of year it’s all “bracket this” and “March Madness that”. The swing in focus to the NCAA tournament has left our NBA writer, Brian Covert, feeling a little left out.

So in the spirit of the season, he’s giving the NBA a “March Madness Makeover”, seeding the top 16 teams in the Association (in his opinion) and breaking down his own bracket, with teams playing a one-game elimination on a neutral court - setting spreads using Covers NBA Power Rankings.

Who says college kids have all the fun?

        Michael Jordan Regional

        No. 1 San Antonio Spurs
        No. 8 Golden State Warriors
        No. 12 Dallas Mavericks
        No. 16 Washington Wizards

        Regional Semi No. 1

No. 1 San Antonio (-6) vs. No. 16 Washington Wizards

The Wizards have a bright future but this is the present and the veteran San Antonio Spurs have too much savvy. Kawhi Leonard neutralizes John Wall and the Spurs use their depth to coast to an easy, controlled win.

        Winner: San Antonio Spurs 102-90

        Regional Semi No. 2

No. 8 Golden State Warriors (-3) vs. No. 12 Dallas Mavericks

Dirk does all he can to carry the Mavs to victory but youth wins out as the Warriors backcourt of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson is just too much for Jose Calderon and Monta Ellis.

        Winner: Golden State Warriors 112-100

        Regional Final

No. 1 San Antonio Spurs (-2) vs. No. 8 Golden State Warriors

Aren’t these one-off games made for Steph Curry? The Warriors star just won’t let anyone get near him, pulling up from anywhere and scoring 46. This has Golden State controlling the tempo from the outset and the Spurs are always playing catchup. The No. 1 seed is done.

Regional Winner: Golden State Warriors 118-112

        Bill Russell Regional

        No. 2 Miami Heat
        No. 7 Memphis Grizzlies
        No. 11 Toronto Raptors
        No. 15 Minnesota Timberwolves

        Regional Semi No. 1

No. 2 Miami Heat (-6) vs. No. 15 Minnesota Timberwolves

Kevin Love’s first taste of postseason action is short although the UCLA product and his Minny teammates put up a fight. But this is LeBron’s league and after switching to Love on the defensive end the reigning MVP takes over down the stretch leading his team to a closer-than-expected victory.

        Winner: Miami Heat 102-97

        Regional Semi No. 2

No. 7 Memphis Grizzlies (pk) vs. No. 11 Toronto Raptors

Intriguing matchups on the perimeter in this one with Kyle Lowry and Mike Conley going toe-to-toe, and DeMar DeRozan giving superstar defender Tony Allen all he can handle. But this game is won down low and the veterans Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol are just too much for the green duo of Jonas Valanciunas and Amir Johnson.

        Winner: Memphis Grizzlies 95-90

        Regional Final

No. 2 Miami Heat (-5) vs. No. 7 Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies make an attempt to control the pace of this one early and it’s a grinding, back-and-forth affair through the first 24 minutes. But Erik Spoelstra goes small for the majority of the second half, dropping LeBron down on Gasol and Randolph. Memphis just can’t cope with the change in tempo and the Heat win.

        Winner: Miami Heat 108-95

        Wilt Chamberlain Regional

        No. 3 Oklahoma City Thunder
        No. 6 Houston Rockets
        No. 10 Portland Trail Blazers
        No. 14 Brooklyn Nets

        Regional Semi No. 1

No. 3 Oklahoma City Thunder (-4) vs. No. 14 Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets have done well to get into the tourney after their horrendous start to the season. But that battle and the fact they’re old is just too much to overcome the young and athletic Thunder. The score makes the game seem closer than it was.

        Winner: Oklahoma City Thunder 108-98

        Regional Semi No. 2

No. 6 Houston Rockets (-3) vs. No. 10 Portland Trail Blazers

Two of the league’s best offensive teams go shot-for-shot in what many say is the best game of the tourney’s opening round. Lillard and Harden start hot but Patrick Beverley eventually gets into the head of the Blazers guards while Nic Batum quiets Harden. LaMarcus Aldridge then takes over, for which the Rockets really have no answer and Dwight’s free-throw shooting eventually lets them down.

        Winner: Portland Trail Blazers 130-126

        Regional Final

No. 3 Oklahoma City Thunder (-4.5) vs. No. 10 Portland Trail Blazers

Another impressive performance from the Thunder, who make the necessary adjustments on Aldridge while Westbrook’s physicality and athleticism are just too much for Damian Lillard. The addition of Caron Butler proves its worth as the veteran seems to always hit the run-killing 3-pointer every time Portland gets close. And Kevin Durant is Kevin Durant, dropping 38 in a comfortable win.

Regional Winner: Oklahoma City Thunder 116-104

        Magic Johnson Regional

        No. 4 Los Angeles Clippers
        No. 5 Indiana Pacers
        No. 9 Chicago Bulls
        No. 13 Phoenix Suns

        Regional Semi No. 1

No. 4 Los Angeles Clippers (-5) vs. No. 13 Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns’ fairytale season comes to an end but there’s no shame in bowing out to the Clippers. The combo of Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan is too much inside and the Suns just can’t deal with Chris Paul and his ability to control the pace of the game.

        Winner: Los Angeles Clippers 116-102

        Regional Semi No. 2

No. 5 Indiana Pacers (-4) vs. No. 9 Chicago Bulls

The least anticipated of the first round matchups, with the league’s two best defensive teams hooking up. And it’s the Bulls who use the emotion of their leader Joakim Noah to scratch and crawl their way to victory. In the end, it just comes down to the Bulls' best player, Noah, having more influence than Indiana’s best player, Paul George.

        Winner: Chicago Bulls 88-85

        Regional Final

No. 4 Los Angeles Clippers (-5) vs. No. 9 Chicago Bulls

Chicago’s fairytale run comes to an end as the Clippers just prove to be a bridge too far. Chris Paul has an answer for every scheme Tom Thibodeau throws at him and the physicality and depth L.A. possesses at the other four positions dominates Chicago. Former Bull Jamal Crawford is the biggest difference maker, dropping 28 off the bench.

Regional Winner: Los Angeles Clippers 109-93

        Final Four

No. 4 Los Angeles Clippers (-2) vs. No. 8 Golden State Warriors

The good times keep rolling for the Clippers. No one on the Warriors can handle the L.A.’s Big Two of Griffin and Paul. Couple this with Los Angeles’ ability to throw big bodies at the Golden State’s limited size along with Steph Curry just unable to find his range means the Clips win controlled and comfortably.

        Winner: Los Angeles Clippers 115-101

No. 2 Miami Heat (-1) at No. 3 Oklahoma City Thunder

The battle that everyone was hoping for doesn’t disappoint, with LeBron and Durant matching up on both ends of the court, each going for 30-plus. However, there are intriguing matchups all over the floor especially down low where Chris Bosh has his hands full with a younger Serge Ibaka. The game goes into overtime and in the end it’s an old hand, Dwyane Wade, who proves the difference maker with 10 points in OT as the Heat edge the Thunder.

        Winner: Miami Heat 125-123 OT

        Championship Game

No. 2 Miami Heat (-1) vs. No. 4 Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers release the shackles of their embarrassing past to grab their first NBA Championship. The backcourt duo of Paul and Darren Collison doesn’t let the Heat get a handle on the point of attack, Bosh and Chris Anderson just can’t keep DeAndre and Blake off the boards and the trio of Matt Barnes, Danny Granger, and Jared Dudley do a more-than-admirable job of limiting LeBron. In the end, a deserved win for Doc Rivers and his crew as they write one of sports feel good stories of the 2000s.

        Winner: Los Angeles Clippers 108-99

The Nuggets seek their second straight victory on Friday night when they visit the struggling Heat.

Denver has two games left on a five-game road trip and is coming off of a 120-112 victory over the Magic on Wednesday. The club is averaging 114.8 PPG over the past five games, but still has major struggles on the defensive end. Over the past 10 games, the Nuggets have surrendered 111.9 PPG, compared to the 105.7 PPG they have allowed the whole season (28th in NBA).

Fortunately for Denver, if there was ever a good time to face Miami, now is that time as the Heat have lost four of their past five contests. They are coming off of a devastating 96-95 home loss to the Nets as 9-point favorites on Wednesday.

In the only matchup between these teams on the season on Dec. 30, Miami went into Pepsi Center and won 97-94, but failed to cover the 5.5-point spread. The Heat are 3-1 SU in this series over the past three seasons, but the Nuggets are 3-1 ATS during this timeframe.

Since 1996, Denver is 17-5 ATS after allowing 105+ points in five straight games. However, Miami is 11-1 ATS after having lost three of its past four games over the past three seasons. There are no new injuries for either team.

The Nuggets are coming off a 120-112 victory over the Magic in which PF Kenneth Faried (12.1 PPG, 7.8 RPG) had 26 points (11-of-18 FG) and nine rebounds. Faried has been on a tear recently, averaging 22.2 PPG and 10.6 RPG over the past five contests. His ability to run the floor like a guard and rebound at such a high level should give the Heat problems when they play a small-ball lineup.

PG Ty Lawson (18.6 PPG, 9.0 APG) also played extremely well against the Magic, finishing with 17 points and 12 assists in 31 minutes of play. Lawson is averaging 21.2 PPG and 10.8 APG over the past five contests and should have a mismatch against the Heat, as they are weakest at the point guard position. Lawson had 26 points and seven assists in 40 minutes in the loss to Miami in December.

One player who struggled in that first meeting, and must be better on Friday is SF Wilson Chandler (14.3 PPG, 4.9 RPG). Chandler had just 13 points (6-of-17 FG, 1-of-6 threes) and was really off in his 41 minutes of play. But Chandler is coming off of a 21-point, 10-rebound performance against the Magic, and must carry his momentum into a matchup with LeBron James. If he doesn’t play well, then it will be very difficult for Denver to pull off an upset of this magnitude.

The Heat lost a bad home game against the Nets on Wednesday night and must get back on track if they are going to catch up to the Pacers in the Eastern Conference standings.

SF LeBron James (26.9 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 6.5 APG) has struggled over the past five games, averaging just 20.0 PPG in 39.0 MPG. He does, however, continue to contribute elsewhere in the box score as he is averaging 7.2 APG and 6.0 RPG over that span. James had 26 points, 10 assists and six rebounds in the Miami win over Denver on Dec. 30. PF Chris Bosh (16.9 PPG, 6.7 RPG) also played well in that game, finishing with 17 points (8-of-12 FG) and five rebounds in 37 minutes.

SG Dwyane Wade (19.3 PPG, 4.8 APG, 4.7 RPG) has really picked up his game while James has struggled, averaging 21.8 PPG, 5.0 APG and 1.2 SPG over the past five contests. Wade was only able to play 18 minutes in the last game against Denver, but he still managed to score 12 points (6-of-9 FG). The Heat need their three All-Stars to play well collectively if they are going to get themselves out of their recent slump.

L.A. Lakers (22-43) at San Antonio Spurs (48-16)

                Sportsbook.ag Line: San Antonio -17, Total: 224

The Lakers finish off a brutal two-game stretch on Friday night when they visit the red-hot Spurs.

Los Angeles has done poorly all season as it struggles to have a consistent rotation and a clean bill of health. The club has won just one game SU over their past five contests (2-3 ATS), with their victory coming in surprising fashion against the Thunder. However, the Lakers faced Oklahoma City again on Thursday night with much different results, as they were pummeled 131-102, while shooting just 39.4% FG.

San Antonio has won its past eight games SU (5-3 ATS) and 11 of their last 12. During the winning streak, the Spurs have played six of the eight games at home, including a 103-90 victory as 8-point favorites against the Trail Blazers on Wednesday night. They held Portland, one of the best offenses in the league, to just 38.6% shooting in the game.

The Lakers have been less than stellar on the road this season at 11-23 SU, but are a profitable 19-14 ATS away from home. Meanwhile, San Antonio is an impressive 24-8 SU at home, but is an underwhelming 13-19 ATS in front of its fans.

The two teams have played just once so far this season, with three meetings to come in the final month, including two in the next week. In the first game, the Spurs traveled to Los Angeles as 7.5-point favorites and won a low-scoring game, 91-85. The past three seasons of this matchup have been dominated by San Antonio, as it holds a 9-2 SU advantage (7-4 ATS) in that timeframe. Bettors have a couple of trends to take a look at in this one, with the Spurs going only 2-11 ATS this season after covering three of their past four games ATS, but they have done well after playing a game as the favorite over the past three seasons with a record of 114-83 ATS (58%). Injuries will not be a concern for San Antonio in this game, but the Lakers have suffered plenty in that department this season and will once again be without SG Kobe Bryant (knee), SG Nick Young (knee) and PG Steve Nash (leg).

While the Lakers are one of the worst teams in the league, they have scored a respectable 102.0 PPG (12th in NBA) this season, including 112.2 PPG over their past five contests. Their defense is horrible though, allowing their opponents to score 107.9 PPG (2nd-worst in NBA), including an unbelievable 129.8 PPG (52.1% FG) in the past five contests. During this five-game stretch, L.A. allowed more than 130 points four times, surrendering a league-high 142 points to the Clippers on March 6.

PF Pau Gasol (17.7 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 1.5 BPG) had only 14 points and six rebounds in his most recent game, but averaged 24.3 PPG and 8.8 RPG in his previous four contests. He has had a solid career (41 games) against the Spurs, averaging 18.0 PPG (49% FG) and 8.7 RPG. SG Jodie Meeks (15.3 PPG, 40% threes) has scored 20.2 PPG (47% FG) over his past five games, including a season-high 42 in the win over the Thunder on Sunday night. He scored 14 points with six rebounds the first time these teams met, but has averaged just 6.6 PPG (43% FG) in 11 career games (4 starts).

PG Jordan Farmar (10.5 PPG, 4.8 APG) has given the Lakers an offensive boost over his past three contests, scoring 16.3 PPG in that time. He has played 17 games while coming off the bench against San Antonio over his career, with averages of only 7.9 PPG (50% FG) and 2.4 APG.

San Antonio has one of the most efficient offenses in the league, making 48.8% of their shots on the season (2nd in NBA), leading to 104.6 PPG (7th in league). Over its past five games, the club has increased its scoring output to 112.2 PPG on 49% FG, while allowing just 97.2 PPG (44% FG); a number close to the 97.9 PPG the Spurs have given up this season (6th in NBA).

PG Tony Parker (17.7 PPG, 6.2 APG) had just nine points on 4-of-13 shooting in the win against Portland on Wednesday night, but was sensational in the game against the Lakers earlier this season when he tallied 24 points, six assists and four rebounds. Over his 39 career games against them, he has averaged 17.8 PPG (49% FG) with 5.8 APG.

PF Tim Duncan (15.2 PPG, 10.0 RPG, 1.9 BPG) is just about a month away from his 38th birthday, but still remains a dominant force, producing three double-doubles over his past four games. He did not play against Los Angeles this season, but has scored 19.3 PPG (46% FG) with 11.2 RPG and 1.9 BPG in 54 career games in this series.

SG Manu Ginobili (12.5 PPG, 4.5 APG) has averaged 19.7 PPG over his past three contests and remains one of the best reserves in the entire league. Ginobili was solid in the win against L.A. this season (20 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists) and has netted 15.4 PPG (43% FG) to go along with 4.4 RPG and 3.9 APG in his 37 career games (18 starts) against them.

                  Friday's Tip Sheet

                  March 13, 2014

Wizards at Magic – 7:05 PM EST

                  Washington: 33-31 SU, 34-29-1 ATS
                  Orlando: 19-47 SU, 27-37-2 ATS

The Wizards are coming off consecutive home losses to division foes Miami and Charlotte, as Washington is trying to solidify its record on the way towards the postseason. In Wednesday’s home defeat to the Bobcats as six-point favorites, the Wizards put up just 85 points on 42% shooting from the floor. Since December 30, the Wizards have covered 13 of 17 games away from the Verizon Center, including road favorite victories over Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Milwaukee, but failed to cover against the Bucks after letting a 28-point lead slip to three in the final three minutes of regulation.

The home-court magic for Orlando has disappeared recently following underdog losses to Houston and Denver after owning early double-digit leads. The Magic has dropped four consecutive games, their longest losing skid since mid-January when they suffered through a 10-game skid. The last time Orlando failed to cover consecutive home contests came back in December following three straight losses to Utah, Sacramento, and New York, while posting a 9-3 ATS record the last 12 games at Amway Arena. The Magic is playing with double-revenge after losing twice at Washington this season, including a 115-106 setback last month.

                  Pacers at 76ers – 7:05 PM EST

                  Indiana: 47-17 SU, 33-30-1 ATS
                  Philadelphia: 15-49 SU, 23-41 ATS

Since the All-Star break, the Eastern Conference-leading Pacers have covered just once in 12 games, while failing to cash in eight straight contests. Indiana did snap a four-game skid in Tuesday’s 94-83 home triumph over Boston as 12-point favorites, but the Pacers enter Friday’s contest at 0-7 ATS in the last seven on the highway. Frank Vogel’s team is listed as a road favorite of at least 9 ½ points for the fifth time this season, as Indiana has put together a 4-0 SU and 1-3 ATS record in this pointspread range.

The 76ers are in the midst of an 18-game losing streak, while each of their 10 defeats since the break have come by double-digits. Philadelphia owns an ugly 1-15 ATS record the last 16 in the home underdog role, with the lone cover coming as 13 ½-point ‘dogs in a 124-112 defeat to Dallas last month. Friday night does mark the return of Evan Turner to Philadelphia after getting dealt from the Sixers to the Pacers last month, as Philly has compiled an 0-8 SU and 2-6 ATS mark since that deal. The last time these teams hooked up at Indiana in November, the Sixers grabbed a cover as 15-point ‘dogs in a 106-98 defeat.

Suns at Celtics – 7:35 PM EST

                  Phoenix: 36-28 SU, 41-22-1 ATS
                  Boston: 22-43 SU, 32-32-1 ATS

The Suns embark on a three-game East Coast swing, looking to snap a three-game skid. Following back-to-back defeats on the road to the Clippers and Warriors, Phoenix put up a stinker in a 110-100 home setback to Cleveland as eight-point favorites. Eric Bledsoe returned to the Suns’ lineup after missing 33 games with a knee injury, but the former Kentucky standout shot just 5-of-16 from the floor as Phoenix fell to 18-6-1 ATS with him in the lineup. The Suns held off the Celtics in Phoenix last month, 100-94 as 5 ½-point favorites, while Phoenix enters TD Garden with a 4-1 SU/ATS record as a road favorite this season.

Boston was chased early in Wednesday’s 116-92 home defeat to New York, falling to 3-5 SU and 4-4 ATS at TD Garden since February. The Celtics have struggled in the role of a home underdog recently, posting a 3-6 ATS record the last nine in this situation, while dropping seven of the past nine in Beantown against Western Conference foes. Brad Stevens’ defense needs to get fixed quickly, allowing at least 100 points in seven of the previous eight home contests, while cashing the ‘over’ five times.

Clippers at Jazz – 9:05 PM EST

Los Angeles: 46-20 SU, 38-28 ATS
                  Utah: 22-43 SU, 29-33-3 ATS

The Jazz snapped a five-game losing streak to finish up their six-game road trip at Philadelphia last Saturday. Utah couldn’t capitalize on that brief momentum, losing at home this week to Atlanta and Dallas, while hitting a late three-pointer to pick up a backdoor cover against the Hawks. Tyrone Corbin’s club owns a solid 7-2 ATS record the last nine opportunities against teams coming off consecutive wins, including outright home ‘dog upsets of the Heat and Thunder.

The Clippers are on fire at the moment, winning nine straight games, including Wednesday’s 111-98 rout of the Warriors as 6 ½-point favorites. During this hot streak, Los Angeles has covered seven times, including four straight ATS wins on the road. L.A. has beaten Utah in eight straight meetings since 2012, including a pair of triumphs at Staples Center this season. The Clips have been quite profitable on the highway as a favorite since mid-December, putting together a 9-3 SU/ATS record the last 12 games.

Hot Nets face tough test versus Wizards

Having cashed in against the spread in their last three games and seven of their last eight, the Brooklyn Nets and their backers will look for another notch in the winning column Saturday.

The Nets are in Washington to face the Wizards Saturday evening and haven't fared well versus the Wiz.

In two games this season, the Nets are 0-2 both straight up and ATS against the Wizards.

Saturday's game opened as a Pick.

Pacers have started coast now for bettors

The Indiana Pacers have already booked their ticket to the playoffs this season and ever since they have soured for bettors.

The Pacers started the season 11-3 against the spread on the road, but since New Years they are a disastrous 3-13 ATS when away from Indiana. Covering the spread playing the east has been just as bad as the Pacers are 0-6-1 ATS in their last seven versus the lowly Eastern Conference.

The Pacers open as 5.5-point road favorites when they travel to Detroit to take on the Pistons Saturday.

                        Bucks surprisingly hot ATS play

The Milwaukee Bucks have been atrocious this year and will almost definitely have a lottery pick in the draft. Somehow though, they've turned all their woes around for bettors.

The Bucks are 4-0 against the spread in their last four and 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games. The Bucks have also been paying out when the visit Madison Square Garden, going 8-3 ATS in the last 11 in the Big Apple.

Milwaukee will look to help out bettors some more when they face the Knicks as 10-point dogs Saturday.

Rondo to sit second game of back-to-backs

Rajon Rondo will not play in the second game of any back-to-back games for the rest of the season according to CBS Boston.

Danny Ainge, the Boston Celtics president of basketball operations, told the affiliate "Based on where we are as a team and Rondo is in his rehab, it’s probably safe to say he won’t play back-to-backs the rest of the year."

An ACL injury has limited Rondo to 19 games for the Celtics this season.
