      • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Duquesne 71, Saint Louis 64-- Billikens' first conference loss.

-- Green Bay 71, Oakland 63-- Phoenix were down 13 at the half.

-- Arkansas 71, Kentucky 67 ot-- Hogs swept Kentucky this year.

-- Marquette 75, Georgetown 73-- Hoyas missed driving layup with 0:03 left that would've tied game.

-- Oregon 87, UCLA 83 2ot-- Bruins tied game with two 3's in last 0:08 of regulation despite suspending their two best players for game. Oregon won in second OT, avoiding an epic collapse/loss.

-- Long Beach State 63, Hawai'i 61-- Hammonds hit trey to win game in last 0:10. 49ers swept season series; teams could meet again in Anaheim.

        *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.......

        13) It is estimated that hosting a Super Bowl is worth $500M to the area that hosts it, in terms of overall financial impact; not sure if that figure is 100% true, but politicians believe it is true, so as soon as the NFL made noise about pulling next season’s Super Bowl out of Arizona, governor Jan Brewer vetoed a controversial bill that revolved around religious freedom and businesses being able to turn down customers based on religious beliefs.

As usual in our world, many voices are heard, but money talks loudest.

        12) If the NBA playoffs started today, a Toronto-Charlotte 3-6 matchup in East would be interested. Two teams you don’t think of being contenders meeting in the playoffs. Bobcats are Michael Jordan’s team, so that would add to the interest too.

        11) In college football last year, the team that averaged the most average yards per play won the game 82.4% of the time. Team with most plays of 20+ yard plays won 70.6% of the time, team that ran the most plays won only 56.9% of games.

        10) Dodger-Arizona spring training opener Wednesday drew 10,306 fans in the Arizona desert. Teams must make significant money on exhibition games, especially the more popular teams like the Dodgers or Cubs.

        9) Philly Eagles have an advantage the next couple of years like the one Seattle Seahawks have had; QB Nick Foles will make only $770,880 this coming year, $815,880 in 2015, which gives them greater cap flexibility, at least until they have to pay Foles down the road.

        8) 11 of the last 12 Idaho State basketball games have been decided by 6 or less points; Bengals must be fun to watch up there in Pocatello. Not easy to handicap their games, since they all seem to come down to the wire.

        7) Surprising that the Michigan Wolverines have six basketball players from the state of Indiana.

You’d think they’d have a lot of players from, well……Michigan.

        6) Travelers Insurance signed up to sponsor the Greater Hartford Open for another ten years, thru 2024. Good tournament to go to down there in Cromwell; if you go, I recommend sitting by the green at the driveable par-4 15th green, with the 18th tee right behind you. Can see a lot there.

        5) A movie called Sharknado 2 filmed some scenes at CitiField in Queens this week; glad the Mets are putting their ballpark to good use. Never heard of the original Sharknado movie. Thinking it didn’t win any Academy Awards.

        4) Despite not having star Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls are 31-26 and in 4th place in the weaker Eastern Conference. Tom Thibodeau is an excellent coach and Joakim Noah is kind of like a less talented Tim Duncan, a star who cares only about winning.

        3) During his 14-year NBA playing career, Allen Iverson earned a total of $154,494,445 just in salary, yet he is said to be broke.

How does this happen? Where did it all go?

He’s far from the only celebrity this happens to, and it is sad. He should be set for life, not have less money than I do.

        2) Mark your calendars, August 3 in Canton, OH. Bills-Giants, the NFL’s Hall of Fame Game. Should be a hot ticket; Canton is a fairly easy drive from Buffalo.

        1) With former used car salesman Alan R Selig retiring soon as baseball commissioner, this question arises: would George W Bush make a good commissioner? He used to own the Texas Rangers, he knows the sport. Can think of a lot worse choices than him.

                  Friday, February 28

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Four NCAAB bubble teams that need to impress Saturday
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March is almost here, which means more games that will have huge impact on the NCAA tournament field as bubble schools continue to look for signature wins to get to March Madness.

Today we look at schools that need to impress and have a quality chance to do so this weekend.

                  Connecticut Huskies (22-6, 10-5 American, 14-12 ATS)

                  Opponent: Cincinnati

Looking simply at their total record on the season, you would think the Huskies are a lock for the NCAA tournament. But a lack of elite wins and a fifth-place spot in the American Athletic Conference, after being swept on the season by SMU, has them in need of a big win. Hosting Cincinnati Saturday is perhaps the best chance for UConn to cement its spot in the tournament with a win over a ranked team.

Missouri State Bears (19-10, 9-8 Missouri Valley, 13-10 ATS)

                  Opponent: Wichita State

Missouri State can make national headlines in a rematch with the undefeated Wichita State Shockers. The 19-10 Bears took the Shockers to overtime in their home meeting, nearly ending WSU’s undefeated run in mid January. Now, on the first day of March, the Bears could end the Shockers streak while earning their 20th win in the process. Would it be enough to qualify for the tournament? You never know.

Xavier Musketeers (19-9, 9-6 Big East, 16-10 ATS)

                  Opponent: Creighton

The Musketeers have stepped up their play and just scored a big win over St. John's at MSG, where they came in as 6-point underdogs. Xavier already has a quality win over its rivals Cincinnati at home from earlier in the season and if they could beat Creighton at home, they would be able to count on a spot in the tournament regardless of how the rest of their Big East calendar pans out. Stopping Wooden Award favorite Doug McDermott is easier said than done, however.

                  Utah Utes (18-9, 7-8 Pac 12, 15-6-1 ATS)

                  Opponent: Colorado

Utah is in a weird place, sitting at 7-8 in the Pac-12. It’s just two games behind a logjam of four schools tied for third in the conference at 9-6. One of those schools is the Utes’ Saturday guests. Colorado makes the trip to Utah, where the Utes are a solid 17-2 on the season. Playing 9-6 teams California and Stanford on the road to close out the Pac-12 season, Utah could start a real climb and land a much more favorable seed in the conference tournament. Beating Colorado is the first step and it would be a serious resume builder. The Buffaloes, at 20-8, have a great chance of making the field.

Duquesne stays hot with win over Saint Louis

Duquesne sprang a huge upset of red-hot Saint Louis Thursday night, but wise bettors were probably aware the Dukes stood a great chance of covering a hefty spread.

Duquesne entered the road game with a 10-5-2 ATS mark and had cashed its last three in a row. The Billikens – winners of 19 in a row SU -- were 9-15 ATS and had dropped four straight pointspread decisions.

The Dukes were 13.5-point underdogs against Saint Louis, but notched a 71-64 victory to bolster their solid ATS mark and keep the Billikens in a betting-window freefall.

Home not where the heart is for Princeton backers

Princeton (15-8 SU, 8-9 ATS) is just 1-5 ATS on its home floor, including getting swept at the betting window last weekend. The Tigers beat Dartmouth 67-57 but failed to cash as a 13-point favorite last Friday, then fell to league-leading Harvard 59-47 on Saturday as a 2.5-point underdog.

The Tigers have a pair of home games this weekend as they host Yale (14-10 SU, 9-5 ATS) Friday and Brown (14-10 SU, 8-5-1 ATS) on Saturday.

UNC's 10-game winning streak bodes well for futures

Thinking about a futures bet on streaking North Carolina? Well, there is some precedent. When the Tar Heels beat North Carolina State 85-84 in overtime on Wednesday night, it marked their 10th straight win, something they hadn’t done since the 2008-09 season, when they opened with 13 straight wins and later added a 10-game winning streak.

Carolina ended that season with an 89-72 rout of Michigan State as a 7.5-point chalk in the NCAA championship game.

Columbia cashing in for Under bettors

A pretty good Ivy League bet throughout this season has been taking the under when Columbia hits the floor. The total has gone low in 11 of the Lions’ 15 lined games, and the trend has been even stronger on the highway for Columbia, at 6-1 in true road games and 9-1 counting neutral-site contests.

The Lions are at Dartmouth Friday and at Harvard on Saturday.

                      NMSU G Ross-Miller suspended

New Mexico State suspended guard K.C. Ross-Miller hours after he instigated a postgame brawl with Utah Valley on Thursday night, ESPN.com reported.

Ross-Miller fired the ball at Utah Valley's Holton Hunsaker at close range and hit him in the leg as time expired in the host Wolverines' 66-61 win in overtime.

Utah Valley fans then stormed the court as the victory got the Wolverines closer to the WAC regular-season championship.

A video of the postgame scene revealed New Mexico State guard DK Eldridge throwing a punch at someone in the crowd and staff forcefully pulling Aggies guard Daniel Mullings away from the melee.

WAC commissioner Jeff Hurd planned to review the video. He is meeting with the Aggies at their game Saturday at Cal State Bakersfield.

New Mexico State coach Marvin Menzies told ESPN.com there were "two separate components" between Ross-Miller throwing the ball and the fans rushing the floor.

Ranked teams fail to cash in for bettors Thursday

All six ranked teams in action failed to cover the spread and went 1-5 straight up in college basketball action Thursday.

Only the Louisville Cardinals won SU, hammering Temple 88-66 but just couldn't cover the 22.5-point closing spread.
