Syracuse is new No. 1 in AP poll

    February 3, 2014

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Syracuse's reward for winning one of the best college basketball games of the season was a spot on top of The Associated Press Top 25 poll.

Combined with No. 1 Arizona's first loss of the season last weekend, the Orange's 91-89 overtime win over Duke on Saturday moved them up one spot to the top.

Syracuse (21-0) received all 65 first-place votes from the national media panel Monday, making the Orange the first unanimous No. 1 since Duke was for six weeks in 2010-11.

''We're happy to be No. 1,'' coach Jim Boeheim said Monday, hours before the Orange met Notre Dame. ''Obviously, it's taken a lot of hard work. It's an honor. We'll try to keep playing well.''

Syracuse, off to the best start in school history, is on top of the poll for the first time since a six-week run in 2011-12.

This is the 15th week all-time Syracuse has been No. 1.

Syracuse is the fourth team to hold the No. 1 ranking this season. Kentucky was on top for the preseason poll and one in the regular season while Michigan State was No. 1 for three weeks and Arizona, which lost to California hours after Syracuse beat Duke, for the last eight.

Arizona (21-1) and Syracuse, which were 1-2 for the last eight weeks, switched spots this week.

Florida, Wichita State, the only other unbeaten in Division I, and San Diego State remained third through fifth and were followed by Villanova, Cincinnati, Kansas, Michigan State and Michigan.

Duke, which also won at Pittsburgh last week, was 11th, a jump of six spots from last week's poll.

No. 20 Virginia, No. 22 Connecticut and No. 23 Gonzaga returned to the rankings. They replaced Ohio State and Wisconsin, which both reached as high as No. 3 this season, and Massachusetts.

The Duke-Syracuse game drew a Carrier Dome-record crowd of 35,446 and it was a record for wins between competing coaches with Boeheim at 941 with the victory and Mike Krzyzewski, the all-time leader with 973.

Duke's Rasheed Sulaimon beat the buzzer in regulation with an off-balance 3-pointer that tied it at 78 and Jerami Grant scored eight points in overtime to lead the Orange in the first meeting between the schools as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The teams meet again in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Feb. 22 which means a crowd of about 26,000 fewer people, but it could be just as good a game.

''We don't want to just settle on that one,'' Syracuse guard Trevor Cooney said after the Duke game. ''We want to keep moving and keep winning and keep playing well.''

      Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six observations from one of the worst Super Bowls ever........

-- Losing a Super Bowl hurts; showing up for one unprepared and then quitting fairly early leaves a mark. Denver will have a hangover from this.

-- Referee Terry McAulay let Joe Namath toss the coin before Seattle's captains called heads/tails. He caught his mistake and the coin before it hit the ground, getting a terrible game off to a sloppy start.

-- Denver kick returner Trindon Holliday put Broncos in a hole by running the opening kick out from seven yards deep in the end zone, setting up the safety that happened on the Broncos' first play. Players whose only job is to run kicks back don't like to take touchbacks.

      -- Seattle's DBs totally imtimidated Denver's WR's. Total mismatch.

-- Percy Harvin did more in the first half than he did all season.

-- AFC West/NFC West teams play each other next year. am guessing one of the primetime games next year will be a rematch of this awful game.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a not-so-super Sunday

      13) NFL got lucky with the weather, then the game turned out to be a skunk anyway; you charge $16 for a cheesesteak at the stadium, and you're going to get a lousy game, its just bad karma.

      12) Tennessee/Arizona State were two colleges that had the most alumni in the Super Bowl, if stuff like that interests you.

      11) There has now been a safety in four of last six Super Bowls; there had been only five safeties in the first 42 Super Bowls.

      10) Dodgers raised ticket prices 140% for this season, as expectations for the team with the highest payroll in baseball history are through the roof.

      9) Arizona Wildcats are holding their breath that Brandon Ashley's foot injury isn't as bad as originally hoped. Ashley is their best defensive big guy and will be a huge loss if he is done for the season.

      8) In case you were wondering, ESPN was showing a documentary on Mike Tyson when the Super Bowl kicked off. Always fun to see what they put on at a time when they know almost no one is watching.

      7) Indiana 63, Michigan 52-- Wolverines lost fifth straight game at Indiana and lost their first conference game this season. Yogi Ferrell made 7-8 from the arc. Hoosiers play better against the better teams.

      6) Nevada Wolf Pack is 8-1 vs spread in Mountain West games; three of their last four games went to overtime- they're a much-improved team.

      5) Oregon State 71, UCLA 67-- Beavers survived 18 turnovers and shaky foul shooting (15-26) as they rallied to beat UCLA, which has been ordinary away from Westwood. Crowds in Corvallis were hurt by Sunday afternoon games when Seahawks were playing- they should pick up now.

      4) Stephen Gallacher won the European tour event in Dubai; in last two rounds, he shot 61 (-13) on the back nine. Very impressive.

      3) Took Kevin Stadler 239 tournaments, but he won on the PGA Tour in an unusual finish where all the contenders stumbled down the stretch. Now he will join his dad in Augusta, the first father/son duo in that event.

      1) Congrats to Aeneas Williams on making the Pro Football Hall of Fame; back in August 2001, I met Williams in Canton, when the Rams played in the Hall of Fame Game against Miami.

They had an open practice on Sundays back then-- I was there to see Jack Youngblood/Jackie Slater get inducted in the Hall of Fame on Saturday, so I went to the open practice, and got this mini-helmet signed by some players, one of whom was Williams.

As he signed the helmet, we talked a little about his getting inducted into the Hall one day; my thought was if the Rams won the Super Bowl that year, he was a mortal lock to get in. He smiled as if he liked that idea.

Rams lost the Super Bowl that year but justice was done this weekend and Williams will be inducted in Canton this July. Good for him.

Xavier at Villanova: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Xavier Musketeers at Villanova Wildcats

Ninth-ranked Villanova bounced back from a loss to Creighton by winning three straight in advance of Monday’s home contest against Xavier. The Wildcats lead the Big East in scoring in conference play, averaging 79.9 points after posting 90 points for the second time in three games following a 68-point performance in the defeat to Creighton on Jan. 20. Xavier has lost two in a row and three of five, recording its lowest point total in 14 games in a 68-60 loss to Seton Hall on Saturday.

The Musketeers are second in conference play in field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage, but have allowed 74 points per conference contest, second-worst in the Big East. Xavier allowed 41 points in the second half Saturday and shot just 38.5 percent from the field to fall 2.5 games behind conference leader Creighton. The Wildcats, who trail Creighton by a half-game, play the first of two consecutive home games before a three-game road trip, highlighted by a Feb. 16 rematch with Creighton.

              TV: 7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

ABOUT XAVIER (15-6, 5-3 Big East): Sophomore Semaj Christon is averaging 21.1 points in conference games, and Christon (third in field-goal percentage at 58.8 percent) and Isaiah Philmore (second at 65.8 percent) have paced the offense. Matt Stainbrook finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds Saturday, but Xavier’s struggles were highlighted by Christon’s foul trouble and a 1-for-11 performance from 3-point range in the second half. Christon has three games of 21-plus points in his past five contests.

ABOUT VILLANOVA (19-2, 7-1): The Wildcats’ offense has been a model of efficiency this season, ranking 24th in the nation in points (80.9) and 20th in assists (16) per game. Four players average in double figures, led by James Bell’s 15.3 points and JayVaughn Pinkston’s 14.9. Bell hit five 3-pointers in Saturday’s 90-74 victory over Temple, and nine Villanova players scored four or more points as the Wildcats shot 52.5 percent from the field.

              TRENDS:

              * Musketeers are 6-2 ATS in their last eight vs. Big East.
              * Wildcats are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 home games.
              * Over is 5-0 in Musketeers last five road games.
              * Over is 6-1 in Wildcats last seven games following a ATS win.

              TIP-INS:

              1. The Wildcats hit 12 3-pointers against Temple, their highest total since making 14 against Providence on Jan. 5.

              2. Xavier leads the Big East in rebounding at 38.5; Villanova is second at 38.3.

              3. Villanova leads the all-time series 16-4, but the teams have played just once since 1994, a 71-66 Xavier victory in 2006.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Iowa State at Oklahoma State
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Iowa State Cyclones at Oklahoma State Cowboys (-6)

Iowa State has lost 18 in a row at Oklahoma State, but the 18th-ranked Cyclones appear to be catching the Cowboys at just the right time. While Iowa State posted an impressive 81-75 win over Oklahoma on Saturday, No. 10 Oklahoma State suffered its second straight loss when struggling Baylor beat the Cowboys, 76-70. Forward Melvin Ejim averages a team-high 18.1 points along with 7.8 rebounds for the Cyclones, who head into Monday’s contest seeking its first win in Stillwater since 1988.

Oklahoma State has lost three of its last four, and coach Travis Ford says his team needs to regroup before facing the Cyclones. “We can’t feel sorry for ourselves, because it won't do any good,” Ford told reporters. “We have to weather the storm. These are tough times. Everyone goes through them. How we respond is important. For us to have success, we need to recover as a team. If we continue to play like individuals, we will continue to struggle.” The Cowboys have dominated the series against Iowa State in recent years, but the Cyclones posted an 11-point win last March in Ames.

                TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: Oklahoma State opened -6 (-110) and has remained steady.

                POWER RANKINGS: Iowa State (-11.4) - Oklahoma State (-12.4) - Home Court (-3.0) = Oklahoma State -4.0

KEY INJURIES: Iowa State: N/A, Oklahoma State: Michael Cobbins (Out - Foot)

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "Tough to predict how people will bet because Marcus Smart's been awful offensively in past few games. But Iowa State has been dreadful versus the spread recently, failing to cover in six straight." - Mike Perry, Sportsbook.ag.

WHY BET IOWA STATE (16-4 SU, 9-9 ATS, 9-8-1 O/U): Forward Georges Niang scored a career-high 27 points on Saturday and is averaging 21.8 points and shooting 57 percent over his last four games. Freshman guard Monte Morris, who has a 21-to-4 assist-to-turnover ratio in eight Big 12 games, scored 12 points in his first career start against Oklahoma and could see more playing time ahead of struggling Naz Long. Guard DeAndre King, averaging 16.1 points, hopes to bounce back after matching a season-low with five points against the Sooners.

WHY BET OKLAHOMA STATE (16-5 SU, 8-9-0 ATS, 11-6 O/U): The Cowboys have struggled offensively in recent games, but they have a favorable matchup against the league’s worst scoring defense in Big 12 action. Iowa State is allowing an average of 78.2 points in league play, creating an opportunity for leading scorer Marcus Smart to get untracked after the player of the year candidate shot 3-of-14 and missed all seven of his 3-point attempts against Baylor. Forward Le’Bryan Nash has come on strong in league play, averaging 14.9 points on 51.2 percent shooting along with 5.6 rebounds.

                TRENDS:

                * Favorite is 9-2-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
                * Home team is 8-3-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
                * Over is 12-5-1 in the last 18 meetings.
                * Cyclones are 1-5-1 ATS in the last seven meetings in Oklahoma St.

                      Top 10 - Stock Watch

                      February 4, 2014

                      February is here!

Expect teams that were thumped by Top 10 teams earlier in the season to be focused and prepared to put up a fight…especially at home.

Favorites covering the spread this time of year will come at a premium.

                      1) Syracuse: (22-0 SU, 11-6-1 ATS) - BUY

It’s going to get a little tricky for the Orange. They should be able to handle the Clemson Tigers in the Carrier Dome on Sunday, but if you are a ‘Cuse fan; bet them now, it may be the last time you get decent value with the spread.

                      2) Arizona: (21-1 SU, 13-8-0 ATS) - SELL

The Wildcats finally slipped up against California last Saturday after close calls with Utah and Stanford in their previous game. Arizona is now 0-4 ATS in its last four. This week, they head home to play a struggling Oregon team and improving Oregon State squad. I believe they win both games, but once again fail to cover.

                      3) Florida: (19-2 SU, 9-7-1 ATS) - BUY

Here’s a fun fact. The Gators' average home win in SEC play is by more than 21 points per game. Their average road win has come by just seven points or less. Florida plays Missouri and Alabama, both at home this week…enough said.

                      4) Wichita State: (23-0 SU, 14-5-1 ATS) - SELL

The oddsmakers finally had had enough and started posting 20-plus numbers against the Shockers. As a result they went 0-2 ATS in their last two games. Expect more of the same until the public gets off their bandwagon. That being said…I like Indiana State to possibly win outright against WSU at home this week.

                      5) San Diego State: (19-1 SU, 10-7 ATS) - HOLD

I’ve said this before and it’s worth saying again, “The Mountain West conference is tough on the road.” The Aztecs go to Boise State to play a scrappy Broncos team. The oddsmakers will test your intelligence and “dangle the carrot” with a very small line, begging you to take San Diego State…but you’re smarter than that.

                      6) Villanova (20-2 SU, 15-5 ATS) - BUY

Coaches won’t admit it, but a loss (can be a good thing) allows a coach to get his teams attention. After their loss to Georgetown, Villanova bounced back nicely by beating Temple and Xavier. I expect the Wildcats to learn from their mistakes and cruise on Friday in a primetime battle against Seton Hall.

                      7) Cincinnati (21-2 SU, 10-7 ATS) - SELL

Despite their upset last week at Louisville, the Bearcats have a lousy ATS record (2-5) and continue to play close games. This weekend they travel to SMU. If you have not been following this Larry Brown team, you should be. Cincinnati will be lucky to get out of Dallas alive.

                      8) Kansas (16-5 SU, 10-10-1 ATS) - HOLD

The Jayhawks have been fickle on the road. On Tuesday, they travel to Waco for a matchup against the Baylor Bears, who will be looking to avenge their loss to Kansas two weeks ago. Bill Self’s team is a field goal favorite. Why so small? Something doesn’t seem right. I’m holding.

                      9) Michigan State (19-3 SU, 11-8-2 ATS) - SELL

The Spartans can’t seem to get healthy and may never be. Branden Dawson suffered a broken hand after slamming his hand down on a table in frustration during a film session, resulting in a 4-6 weeks recovery. Dawson was a key player in the Michigan State defense. This will have an impact. The Spartans are 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS in their last four. Tough game at Wisconsin set for Sunday.

                      10) Michigan (16-5 SU, 10-8-1 ATS) - BUY

After a nice 10-game winning streak, Michigan suffered a loss on Super Bowl Sunday to Indiana. Now they must pull themselves together and get ready for Nebraska on Wednesday at home before a tough road test at Iowa on Saturday.

                        Tuesday's Big 10 Action

                        February 3, 2014

Be sure to follow us on Twitter for daily College Betting Notes!

Michigan State and Michigan have jumped out to the early lead in the Big Ten men’s college basketball regular season title race, but a pair of teams will try and make a statement that they are still legitimate contenders in a key conference double-header this Tuesday.

First, Ohio State will go on the road to face Iowa, followed by Illinois playing host to Wisconsin.

No. 24 Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 17 Iowa Hawkeyes (ESPN, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Ohio State kicked off the month of February with a huge 59-58 victory over Wisconsin this past Saturday as five-point road underdogs. This was just its second straight-up win in its last seven games, but it could signal a return to form that produced 15 SU wins to start the season. The Buckeyes are 17-5 SU on the year with a 4-5 record in conference play. They have failed to cover in five of their last six games to fall to 10-11 against the spread. They are 4-2 ATS on the road this season and the total has stayed UNDER in four of those six contests.

Defense was the key to Saturday’s win over the Badgers. The Buckeyes are averaging 72 points a game and holding teams to just 58.9 points on the other end of the court. LaQuinton Ross leads the team in scoring with 14.1 points a game and he is shooting 41.7 percent from 3-point range. Ohio State, as a team, is shooting 45.3 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from beyond the arc.

The Hawkeyes will be going for the season sweep after beating Ohio State 84-74 as 6 ½-point underdogs on the road on Jan. 12. Since that crucial win, they are just 3-2 both SU and ATS with losses to Michigan and Michigan State. Iowa is 17-5 SU on the year with a profitable 13-7 record ATS. The total went OVER the 138 ½-point closing line in the first meeting and it has gone OVER in five of its last eight games. The Hawkeyes are 6-3 SU and ATS in conference play including an 81-74 victory over Illinois this past Saturday as five-point road favorites.

Iowa is ranked seventh in the nation in scoring with 84.3 points a game and its 43.5 rebounds is the third-highest average in the country. It is shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 37 percent from 3-point range. Roy Devyn Marble has led the way with 16.3 points and Aaron White is a close second with 13.5 points a game. Marble is also dishing out 3.0 assists and White is tied for the team lead in rebounds with 6.5.

The Hawkeyes opened as six-point home favorites over Ohio State for Tuesday’s matchup.

Iowa’s SU win last month snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Buckeyes. It has now covered in five of the last seven meetings and even though the total went OVER this first time they met it had stayed UNDER in six of the last seven games between the two.

Wisconsin Badgers at Illinois Fighting Illini (Big Ten, 9:00 p.m. ET)

The bloom is off the rose in Badgerland with five SU losses in their last six games after a sterling 16-0 start carried them all the way to No. 3 in the rankings. They are now just 4-5 in conference play as part of an overall record of 17-5 SU. Making matters worse, Wisconsin has failed to cover in six of its last eight games to fall to 11-10-1 ATS on the year. It is 3-3 ATS on the road and the total has gone OVER in four of the six games. As expected, the Badgers dropped out the AP Top 25 after being ranked in the last 19 polls.

To right the ship against Illinois, the Badgers will need to generate more offense then the 66 points they have been averaging over the course of this six-game slide. Wisconsin has four players scoring in double figures led by Sam Dekker and Ben Brust, who are each averaging more than 13 points a game. Dekker also leads the team in rebounds with 6.3 and Brust is shooting 39.7 percent from 3-point range. The Badgers are averaging 73.5 points a game and shooting 45.7 percent from the field.

Illinois finds itself bringing up the rear in the Big Ten with just two SU victories in its first eight conference games. The Fighting Illini are riding a seven-game losing streak into this matchup and they have failed to cover in six of those games. One of those losses was a 95-70 beatdown at the hands of Wisconsin on Jan. 8 as 10-point road underdogs. They are 13-9 SU with a 9-10-2 mark ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in 11 of 20 games with a posted line. Illinois has gone 4-6-1 ATS in 11 previous home games this year and it has now failed to cover in its last three games at the State Farm Center.

The Fighting Illini have nowhere to go but up after ranking in the bottom third of Division I in both points (67.8) and field-goal percentage (41.3). The one bright spot has been the play of Rayvonte Rice. He leads the team in scoring with 16.5 points a game and he is also pulling down an average of 5.8 rebounds a game. Tracy Adams and Joseph Bertrand are the other two players scoring in double figures and Betrand is the team’s best shooter; hitting 51.4 percent from the field and 44.1 percent from 3-point range.

Wisconsin has been opened as a four-point road favorite for this conference clash.

The Badgers have won the last six meetings both SU and ATS and the total has gone OVER in seven of the last nine games between these two. The favorite is 15-5-1 ATS in the last 21 meetings.

                          Missouri at Florida

                          February 4, 2014

Florida will be looking for its 14th consecutive win Tuesday night when it hosts Missouri in Gainesville. The Gators are atop the SEC standings with a perfect 8-0 record in league play.

As of early this morning, most books had Florida (19-2 straight up, 9-7-1 against the spread) installed as a 12-point home favorite.

Billy Donovan's team has been destroying opponents at home, including Saturday's 69-36 beatdown of Texas A&M as a 16-point 'chalk.' Michael Frazier II scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Dorian Finney-Smith came off the bench to score 11 points and grab nine boards to go with a pair of blocked shots.

UF freshman center Chris Walker will make his much-anticipated debut against Frank Haith's team. Walker, a McDonald's All-American who led Holmes Co. High School to a state title in Lakeland last year, has served a 12-game suspension for minor nonsense involving the AAU team he played on in high school.

Florida is No. 5 in the RPI Rankings with a 5-2 record against RPI Top-50 opponents. The Gators beat the RPI's top-ranked squad (Kansas) convincingly in Gainesville in mid-December. Their only two losses -- at Wisconsin and at UConn on a buzzer-beater -- came when multiple players were out to injury or suspension.

UF has won its four SEC home games by margins of 33, 26, 22 and 16 points. The Gators own a 6-3-1 spread record at home, easily taking the cash in their last three outings.

Missouri (16-5 SU, 8-9-2 ATS) is in a three-way tie for sixth place in the SEC with a 4-4 record. UF and Kentucky are the only SEC locks for NCAA Tournament invites at this point, but Missouri is in the bubble picture along with LSU, Tennessee and Ole Miss.

Missouri is ranked No.51 in the RPI with a 5-4 record against the Top 100. The Tigers' best win was an 80-71 triumph over UCLA (RPI: 18) at home. Their only shameful loss was an overtime defeat as double-digit home favorites vs. Georgia.

Missouri had a chance to pick up a crucial win Saturday at home vs. Kentucky. But a second-half comeback sparked by Jabari Brown came up a little short in an 84-79 loss as a 1.5-point puppy.

Brown, who leads the SEC in scoring with a 20.1 points-per-game average, dropped 33 points on the Wildcats. Jordan Clarkson added 28 points for the Tigers, who get another shot at a resume-building victory tonight.

UF's Casey Prather, the team's leading scorer with a 16.2 points-per-game average, didn't practice on Sunday due to a sore ankle. He was expected to practice Monday and is listed as 'probable.'

In Missouri's debut season in the SEC, it split a pair of regular-season meetings with UF. The Gators smashed Mizzou by an 83-52 count as 13.5-point home favorites, but the Tigers responded with a 63-60 revenge win as five-point home underdogs.

The 'under' is 12-4-1 overall for Florida this year, 8-1-1 in its home games. The 'under' is 12-6-2 overall for Mizzou, but the 'over' has hit in four of its last six games.

Tip-off at the O-Dome is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

                          **B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Iowa State went into Stillwater and won a 98-97 decision over Oklahoma St. in triple overtime last night. The Cyclones covered the spread for the first time in seven outings, hooking up money-line backers with a +260 payout. 'The Mayor' led his team to victory as a seven-point underdog.

-- Oklahoma State star Marcus Smart was mired in an abysmal four-game shooting slump going into last night's backbreaking defeat vs. Iowa St. He had made just 13-of-53 shots from the field (20%) and 3-of-28 (9.7%) from beyond the 3-point line. Smart had a decent performance against the Cyclones, finishing with 20 points on 6-of-14 attempts. He remain ice cold from deep, however, hitting just 1-of-5 to extend his 3-ball slump to 4-for-33. Le'Bryan Nash scored a team-high 26 points for the Cowboys, who have lost four of their last five games. Now Travis Ford's bunch will have to move on without freshman guard Stevie Clark, who was dismissed from the squad on Monday following a Sunday morning arrest. Clark, the High School Player of the Year in Oklahoma after he led his team to a fourth straight state title last season, was also arrested on New Year's Day. With the injury to Michael Cobbins already, Oklahoma St. will have to play without two key players for the rest of the year.

-- Villanova jumped out on Xavier early and spent most of the second half ahead by double digits en route to an 81-58 win as a 10-point home favorite. The 139 combined points fell 'under' the 147-point total, ending an 11-1 run of 'overs' for the Wildcats and a 6-1 'over' spree for the Musketeers.

-- Georgia Tech point guard Trae Golden is now 'probable' Tuesday at Clemson. Golden, who averages 14.0 points and 3.4 assists per game, is nursing an ankle injury.

-- Wake Forest guard Codi Miller-McIntyre is 'questionable' tonight at Duke. Miller-McIntyre averages 14.1 points, 3.8 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game. The Blue Devils were 18-point home favorites early this morning.

-- After losing at Texas on Saturday, Kansas is on the road again tonight at Baylor. The Bears were slumping mightily until snapping out of it Saturday and winning at Oklahoma St. as 11-point underdogs. If Scott Drew's team can knock off KU tonight, it will have bolstered its resume by miles in a matter of only 72 hours.

                            Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Thunder 86, Grizzlies 77-- No one on Memphis scored more than 13.

-- Syracuse 61, Notre Dame 55-- Quick turnaround for Orange after their overtime win Saturday night.

-- Villanova 81, Xavier 58-- Third straight loss for Musketeers.

-- Bucks 101, Knicks 98-- Most overrated franchise in sports loses to a team that is now 9-39. But hey, Carmelo had 36.

-- Nuggets 116, Clippers 115-- Randy Foye drained a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to win an exciting game.

-- Iowa State 98, Oklahoma State 97 3ot-- Cyclones win in Stillwater for first time since 1988. Tremendous ballgame.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

                            13) If I’m the Seahawks, I do something proactive with Russell Wilson’s contract, and get this baseball bug out of his system. He’s making under $700,000 a year; he obviously is going to get a big payday someday, so give him a chunk of it now, with the provision he stop with the baseball. Curious to see how this all turns out. If I ran an NFL franchise, my QB wouldn’t be playing another sport.

                            12) NFL dodged a huge weather bullet this weekend; my cousin teaches school on Long Island, they had a snow day Monday, with 8+ inches of white stuff falling in the NY/NJ area. They were lucky this time, missing the storm by 16 hours or so, but luck only lasts so long.

                            11) My opinion is that the NFL needs to improve the quality of its product, which slipped a lot this year. Less off-season practice hasn’t resulted in better football. This Super Bowl might’ve been the worst NFL game I saw all season. At some point, the product has to become important again; right now, avoiding lawsuits seems like the league’s priority, but that’s going to have to change.

                            10) South Point Casino’s Jimmy Vaccaro said his house had a higher Super Bowl handle than last year, with roughly 40% of the action on prop bets. I’m telling you, the 44-page PDF file LVH put out was a classic. Lot of imagination went into some of the more obscure props.

                            9) Glad to report that this: A guy I work with, his nephew was at the Super Bowl in New Jersey this weekend and met Mike Ditka, got his picture taken with him. Says Iron Mike is a good guy. Good to hear.

                            8) Read something on Twitter today that of 25 states that have pro sports teams, Texas, Florida and Washington are only three that do not have a personal income tax, which makes it beneficial for players to play there.

                            7) Why teams win: Russell Wilson was a 3rd round pick; Richard Sherman, Malcolm Smith (5th rounders), while Doug Baldwin/Jermaine Kearse were both undrafted free agents. That kind of front office legwork is how you win. Only four of Seattle’s 53 players were on the team before Schneider, Carroll took charge of the franchise.

                            6) Kevin/Craig Stadler will be first father/son to play in same Masters in April; will they pair the father/son together, or do they keep the seniors together and the regular Tour players together? One cool thing about golf; when Kevin Stadler won Sunday, you could see how thrilled he was; we were witnessing one of the best, if not the best moment of his life.

                            5) I follow a lot of people on Twitter, a lot. There is always dissent on topics, usually a lot of it. Did not read one negative comment about the halftime entertainment Sunday, so that’s good.

Everyone agreed it was a top-flight show; unusual for everyone to agree.

                            4) NFL doesn’t pay those acts that perform at halftime, but Bruno Mars has a deal with Pepsi and here’s another way they get paid; tickets for the Bruno Mars concert here in Albany later this year went on sale Monday morning at 10am; they were lined up Monday morning outside the arena, waiting for tickets. Can’t beat free advertising, not the kind the NFL can provide.

                            3) Looks like David Price will pitch for the Rays this season after all; if team struggles in first half, they could try and deal him in July, but what will they get for an expensive, talented pitcher who can be a free agent soon?

Buyer beware; if the Rays know this is his last year in Tampa, pitch counts will go out the window; why preserve his arm so he can pitch for someone else against you?

                            2) Early line on next year’s Super Bowl from William Hill Sports (I’m not making this up); NFC -3.5, over/under of 50.

                            1) Only 212 days until the 2014 NFL season opens on a Thursday night in Seattle, I’m guessing against the rival 49ers.
