        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Villanova at Creighton
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Villanova Wildcats at Creighton Bluejays (-3.5)

In its first meeting against Villanova on Jan. 20, Creighton drilled a Big East- and school-record 21 3-pointers while handing the Wildcats their worst home loss since 1980-81. No. 6 Villanova, which hits the road Sunday in a showdown between the top two teams in the conference, holds a half-game lead over the 17th-ranked Bluejays and has won six straight since their 28-point setback. "I think a lot of people watched that game and learned how not to play them," Wildcats coach Jay Wright said.

Wright suggested the Wildcats’ overall aggressiveness worked against them in the first meeting and perhaps no Creighton player benefited more than Ethan Wragge, who tied a school record with nine 3-pointers. Villanova began its three-game road trip with an 87-62 win over DePaul on Wednesday, but faces a difficult challenge against the Bluejays, who have won four of five since routing the Wildcats. Creighton, which posted a 20-win season for the 16th time in 17 years with Thursday’s five-point win at Butler, is looking for its 16th straight home victory.

        TV: 5 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

LINE HISTORY: The Bluejays opened as 3.5-point home faves.

        POWER RANKINGS: Villanova (-16.4) - Creighton (-14.3) + Home Court (-3.0) = Creighton -0.9

        INJURY WATCH: N/A

WHY BET VILLANOVA (22-2 SU, 17-5 ATS, 15-7 O/U): The Wildcats took a page out of the Bluejays’ book in the win over DePaul, knocking down a season-high 15 3-pointers while leaving Wright pleased with his team’s focus. “I know they're going to concentrate on (Sunday), but for a team to go in and concentrate like they did against DePaul is impressive to me," Wright told the school’s official website. Villanova has also picked it up at the defensive end, allowing 61.4 points over its last five games after surrendering 96 to Creighton and 85 five days later at Marquette.

WHY BET CREIGHTON (20-4 SU, 13-9 ATS, 8-13 O/U): In addition to passing Allan Houston and Kevin Bradshaw on the NCAA's career scoring list against Butler, Doug McDermott delivered his second game-winning basket in the Bluejays’ last three games and third of the season after never having done so previously. Incidentally, McDermott’s go-ahead 3-pointer sparked a game-ending 7-0 run and gave coach Greg McDermott (Doug’s father) his 100th career win at Creighton. Greg McDermott needed only 134 games to do so, allowing him to reach the benchmark quicker than all but one coach in school history.

        TRENDS:

        * Wildcats are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games.
        * Bluejays are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.
        * Wildcats are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 vs. Big East.
        * Bluejays are 30-10 ATS in their last 40 Sunday games.

          Underdog hot in Wisconsin-Michigan meetings
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're looking for an underdog play in college basketball action Sunday, consider the Wisconsin Badgers.

The Underdog is 5-0 ATS in the previous five meetings between the Badgers and the Michigan Wolverines.

The two will renew acquaintances at Michigan Sunday with the Badgers as 4.5-point road dogs.

              • Big Monday Action

                February 16, 2014

                **North Carolina at Florida State**

-- Some offshore betting shops opened North Carolina (17-7 straight up, 13-11 against the spread) as a 1.5-point favorite for Monday's ACC showdown in Tallahassee. However, as of early Sunday night, most books had the Seminoles favored by one point.

-- Roy Williams' team is on fire with six straight wins both SU and ATS, including Saturday's 75-71 win over Pittsburgh as a 3.5-point home favorite. James Michael McAdoo was the catalyst for the Tar Heels, producing 24 points and 12 rebounds. Marcus Paige buried 5-of-6 attempts from 3-point land and finished with 18 points, four assists and four steals.

-- Paige and McAdoo form an outstanding 1-2 punch. McAdoo, the junior power forward, averages 15.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Paige averages team-highs in scoring (17.1 PPG) and assists (4.5 APG).

-- FSU (15-10 SU, 13-10 ATS) is desperate for a quality win over UNC because it has lost five of its last seven games both SU and ATS. The Seminoles are No. 59 in the RPI Rankings. They are just 2-6 against the RPI Top 50 and 5-9 versus the Top 100.

-- FSU picked up a mandatory 67-60 win at Wake Forest as a two-point road favorite. Ian Miller knocked down 5-of-7 shots from deep and scored a game-high 25 points. Aaron Thomas added 18 points, 14 rebounds and four steals.

-- Leonard Hamilton's squad has won eight of its 11 home games while going 5-4 ATS. Depending on if and how the line moves, this could end up being the first home underdog situation of the season for the Seminoles.

-- UNC is No. 27 in the RPI Rankings. The Tar Heels are 5-3 against the RPI Top 50 and 8-5 versus the Top 100.

-- Although the 'over' has hit in six of its last eight games, UNC has still seen the 'under' go 12-11 overall.

-- The 'under' is 14-8-1 overall for FSU, 5-4 in its home games.

-- UNC has won three in a row over FSU both SU and ATS, including a 77-72 win as a three-point underdog in Tallahassee last year. The 'over' is 6-2 in the last eight head-to-head meetings between these ACC adversaries.

-- ESPN will have the telecast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

                **Oklahoma State at Baylor**

-- Both of these teams have been fading fast and they're both in dire need of a victory Monday night in Waco. A few offshore shops opened Baylor (16-9 SU, 7-11-1 ATS) as a 5.5-point home favorite, but that number was reduced to four by early Sunday night.

-- After losing eight of its first 10 Big 12 games, Baylor has won back-to-back contests. The Bears cruised to an easy win at TCU last week and then pulled out a miracle win and cover Saturday. They trailed Kansas State nearly the entire game and were down 30-21 at intermission. But down three on the final possession, an offensive rebound led to a pass out to Brady Heslip, who hadn't made a shot all day but buried a rushed 3-ball at the buzzer to force overtime. The game would go to a second overtime and in that extra session it was all Baylor. The Bears got the scoring in double OT started with a 3-pointer off the backboard. That was ominous sign for Kansas State backers like me. Gamblers on the Wildcats as five-point underdogs suffered a painful loss as Baylor pulled away to win 87-73.

-- Kenny Cherry was the catalyst against Kansas State, producing a triple-double with 20 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds and three steals. The winners also got a double-double from Cory Jefferson, who had 21 points and 11 rebounds. Isaiah Austin added 18 points, seven boards and nine blocked shots.

-- Oklahoma State (16-9 SU, 8-13 ATS) has lost six in a row and seven of its last eight to fall out of the Top 25 and into the heart of the bubble conversation. Even worse for our purposes, the Cowboys have failed to cover the spread in seven consecutive contests. They came out on the wrong side of a 77-74 decision in a gut-wrenching home loss to Oklahoma on Saturday.

-- In the Bedlam setback vs. OU, Markel Brown scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Le'Bryan Nash finished with 15 points and 10 boards.

-- Oklahoma State star Marcus Smart (17.5 PPG) is 'out' Monday as he serves the third and final game of a suspension stemming from shoving a fan in a loss at Texas Tech.

-- This is a revenge game for Oklahoma State When these Big 12 rivals met in Stillwater on February 1, Baylor captured a 76-70 win over the Cowboys as an 11.5-point road underdog. Heslip hit six 3's and scored a team-high 20 points. Rico Gathers added 14 points and six rebounds, while Jefferson finished with 11 points and 13 boards. In the losing effort, Brown had a game-high 24 points. Nash had 19 points and six boards, while Smart was held to 15 points on 3-of-14 shooting from the field.

-- Travis Ford's team is No. 42 in the RPI Rankings. OSU is 3-8 vs. the RPI Top 50, 6-8 against the RPI Top 100. The Cowboys' best wins have come over Colorado, Texas and Memphis.

-- Baylor is No. 49 in the RPI, going 4-7 against the Top 50 and 5-8 versus the Top 100.

-- The 'over' is on a 6-2 run for the Cowboys to improve to 13-8 overall.

-- The 'over' has hit in three straight Baylor games. The Bears have seen the 'over' go 11-7 overall, but the 'under' is 5-4 in their home games.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

                **B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- I wish Bill Raftery was the analyst for every college basketball game I watch. I also wish there was an auto-mute button for Seth Davis.

-- Wisconsin center Frank Kaminsky scored 17 of his game-high 25 points, including a dagger step-back trey off the dribble at crunch time, to lead the Badgers to a huge 75-62 win at Michigan as 4.5-point underdogs. The Wolverines trailed by 15 at halftime, but they cut the deficit down to three with more than five minutes left. However, Wisconsin promptly answered with back-to-back triples from Josh Gasser and Kaminsky and cruised into the winner's circle from there.

-- Nebraska beat a top-10 opponent on the road for the first time in 17 years Sunday when it went into East Lansing and emerged with a 60-51 win at Michigan State as a 13.5-point underdog. The Cornhuskers hooked up money-line supporters with an incredible +900 payout (paid $100 on $900 wagers). If you haven't seen Nebraska junior Terran Petteway play recently, you're missing out. This dude is a beast who took over at crunch time in a win at Northwestern last Saturday. He did the bulk of the work Sunday, too, finishing with 23 points and five rebounds. Let's all welcome Nebraska to the bubble-banter conversations we're going to be having in the upcoming weeks. The Cornhuskers had an RPI of 65 before beating the Spartans, so I would think they'll get a bump up into the 50s. They are 6-6 in Big Ten play and have a shot at winning all of their six remaining games: against Penn State, Purdue, at Illinois, Northwestern, at Indiana and Wisconsin. I think Nebraska will be favored in three of the four home games and will be very short 'dogs at Illinois and at Indiana.

-- Behind strong performances from seniors Scottie Wilbekin, Casey Prather and Patric Young, Florida captured its first win at Rupp Arena since 2007 on Saturday night in Lexington. The Gators beat Kentucky 69-59 as 2.5-point underdogs. The 128 combined points stayed 'under' the 130.5-point total. UF has now seen the 'under' cash at a 15-5-1 overall clip.

-- On Sunday, I asked Kenny White of DonBest what his line would be if Florida and Syracuse met this week in Omaha. White would make the Gators two-point favorites.

-- I asked Cecil Hurt, the long-time Alabama beat writer for the Tuscaloosa News, about the status of Anthony Grant last week. In his fifth season as the head man for the Crimson Tide, Grant has only one NCAA Tournament appearance and zero wins. Hurt indicated that it could go either way depending on how Alabama finishes the season. In other words, the school doesn't want to pay a class act like Grant nearly $10 million to get lost. He has five years at $1.9 million per left on his contract. However, Saturday's loss at South Carolina didn't help Grant's cause.

                • Hot & Not

                  February 17, 2014

Bubbles are going to be bursting all around in college basketball, but today, we're going to be looking at the teams which are bursting our bankrolls instead of our bubbles. Check out the list of teams who are on the nastiest slides in the land as we head into the middle of February.

Oklahoma State Cowboys (0-7 ATS L/7) – Things have gone from bad to worse for the Cowboys, as they aren't just in gambling trouble. They're in bubble trouble, too. They have lost six games in a row, and their only wins since beating Texas at the beginning of January are against West Virginia and TCU. Having G Marcus Smart suspended for three games hasn't helped any either. The Pokes are really dipping fast down the stretch and need to be resuscitated in a hurry.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (0-6 ATS L/6) – The Hilltoppers very well could be ones to remember this year, as they could end up winning the Sun Belt. However, the oddsmakers have definitely caught onto this team being one of the elites in the conference. In spite of the fact that WKU is 4-2 SU in its last six, it has failed to beat the number in all six. Granted, four of those six ATS losses have come by a combined 7.5 points, so things could change, but the Toppers are still going to have to put forth an exemplary effort to cover against most in this conference.

San Jose Spartans (0-6-1 ATS L/7) – Normally, we wouldn't include a team with a push in the mix on this list, but San Jose State has been dreadful. The team hasn't scored more than 56 in a game in a month, and it is averaging just 63.0 points per game on the season, ranking 330th in the land. The team is only shooting 37.7 percent for the season from the field and is under 35 percent in conference play. There aren't many worse cases in the country than this from a betting perspective.

James Madison Dukes (0-6 ATS L/6) – The CAA is down this year, and the Dukes aren't helping their own cause any. They only have their defense to rely upon, and when that unit fails, there is just no hope. F Charles Cooke is really the only solid offensive weapon that the team has at its disposal, and when he isn't playing well, forget about it. JMU has won two of its last six games along the way, but it has failed to cover all six.

Pittsburgh Panthers (0-6 ATS L/6) – Pitt has only won two of its last six games, and though it won't fall out of the dance, it certainly could make its own situation a lot less appealing if it can't get back on the horse here against Florida State next Sunday. Three of the last four are on the road, and this will be the first time that the team has played in the ACC Tournament. The Panthers haven't won a game in regulation since January 25th.

Loyola Marymount Lions (0-6 ATS L/6) – The Lions have been pathetically bad this year from an ATS standpoint at 8-18 ATS, and they have now failed in six in a row to beat the number. That said, they aren't the worst team in this conference; having G Anthony Ireland should be enough to keep this team competitive every night. The Lions could turn this around and surprise down the stretch with nothing but home games and the WCC Tournament left on the docket.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons (0-5 ATS L/5) – Offense has been the problem for the Deacs all season long, but of late, it has been the defense which has really let them down. They have allowed at least 79 points in three of their last four games, and for a team which only averages 65 points per game in conference play, that's awfully bad news. There have been some close calls in here that have gone the wrong way from a betting standpoint for Wake Forest though, so things could turn around yet.

                  • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman's top six freshmen in college hoop.......

                    6) Marcus Foster G, Kansas State-- Scoring 15.1 ppg, had 38 points in his last two games, both of which went to OT.

                    5) Joel Embiid, C Kansas-- Struggling with knee/back injuries right now.

                    4) Andrew Wiggins, F Kansas-- Scoring 16.1 ppg, is solid defender-- hype he had coming into season was hard to live up to.

                    3) Julius Randle, F Kentucky-- Averaging 15.7 ppg, 10 boards/game.

                    2) Tyler Ennis, G Syracuse-- Frosh engine driving the unbeaten Orange.

                    1) Jabari Parker, F Duke-- 2nd in ACC in scoring, tops in rebounding.

                    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

                    13) Nebraska 60, Michigan State 51-- Tim Miles has his team primed to make a run in the NIT. Every team in the Big Dozen has at least three losses, and every team has at least three wins. No great teams, though.

                    12) Wisconsin 75, Michigan 62-- In a 60-possession road game, Badgers had two turnovers. Two. Wisconsin has now won four games in a row after they had lost five of six. Resilient team.

                    11) Pretty exciting Sunday in the MAAC.........
                    Canisius 92, Siena 88, triple OT....Marist 96, Monmouth 92 double OT

                    10) Golf is weird. Pat Perez eagled the 10th hole at Riviera Saturday, then had a triple bogey on the same hole Sunday. Go figure.

                    9) Disappointed to hear that Mark Mulder tore an achilles trying to make a comeback with the Angels. Mulder was 81-42 in five years with the A's-- I was in Fenway Park in August 2003 when he left with a stress fracture in his hip. Mulder completed 22 of his 150 starts for the A's. Thats a lot now; A's had six complete games all of last season.

                    8) Pat Knight was mercifully fired by Lamar after going 6-50 the last two years, after he went 23-12 in 2012 with the previous coach's players, whom he publicly blasted in a bizarre February 2012 news conference.

Odd that former Lamar/Oklahoma coach Billy Tubbs was the person most often quoted in the wire story; he used to be Lamar's AD. Tubbs' teams ran and ran and ran-- you'd think Lamar would go for someone more like that.

                    7) Watching Notre Dame-Boston College last night, it just didn't seem like an ACC game. Terrible level of play. BC has to go get alum Bruce Pearl, who is eligible to be hired this spring. Great coach; he would invigorate what is right now a program in a coma.

                    6) If Boston College doesn't hire Pearl, then Wake Forest, Washington State, Auburn, DePaul-- one of those schools should.

                    5) If you care about such things, road team is 11-1 vs spread in Syracuse's ACC games, 11-0-1 in Western Kentucky's Sun Belt games.

                    4) I turn on the TV and I see Charles Barkley interviewing the President of the United States, and I have no idea what to think. Still don't. Listening to the President, seems like he watches a lot of basketball. Interesting.

                    3) Why doesn't every golfer who wins a PGA Tour event get invited to play in The Masters? Seems like that would be a good reward for winning.

                    2) Creighton 101, Villanova 80-- Bluejays have lot of trouble with athletic defense of St John's, but not so much with Villanova-- they scored a total of 197 points in two wins over the Wildcats, a couple of easy wins-- they made 30 of 50 3-pointers vs Villanova.

                    1) Temple 71, SMU 64-- A bright day in a dismal season for the Owls, who are 2-12 in their last 14 games. SMU has had a good season, but they've also lost at Temple/South Florida, little bit of a red flag.

Game of the Day: Oklahoma State at Baylor
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma State Cowboys at Baylor Bears (-4, 145)

While Marcus Smart was powerless to stop Oklahoma State from dropping its sixth straight game over the weekend, Baylor’s Kenny Chery put on a show many expect from the Cowboys’ star. The Bears, who host the Cowboys in a battle between the two most disappointing teams in the Big 12 on Monday, snapped a four-game home losing streak with Saturday’s double-overtime win against Kansas State. Chery finished with 20 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds to post the sixth triple-double in school history.

Chery’s career game could serve as salt in the wound for Oklahoma State and Smart, who sat out Saturday’s loss to Oklahoma and will miss Monday as he completes his three-game suspension for shoving Texas Tech fan Jeff Orr on Feb. 8. The Cowboys are in the midst of their longest losing streak since 2008 after beginning conference play with a 4-2 mark and, like Baylor, face an uphill battle to qualify for the NCAA Tournament without a strong finish. Oklahoma State could help its cause with a win on the road, where it is 1-5 in league play.

LINE HISTORY: The Bears are early 4-point faves.

                            POWER RANKINGS: Oklahoma State (-9.1) - Baylor Bears (-1.0) - Home Court (-3.0) = Oklahoma State -5.1

INJURY WATCH: Oklahoma State - Marcus Smart (Out - suspension)

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (16-9 SU, 8-13 ATS, 13-8 O/U): Phil Forte III entered Saturday 41-of-41 from the foul line at home, but went 1-of-4 as the Cowboys missed 10 of their 22 free throws in a 77-74 loss. Four of the team’s last five setbacks have been by six points or fewer and fatigue may be playing a factor as the starters have played 341 of a possible 400 minutes over the last two games. “We had some tired guys out there…they're down. This is as down of a locker room that I've seen,” coach Travis Ford told reporters after the game.

ABOUT BAYLOR (16-9 SU, 7-11-1 ATS, 11-7 O/U): Isaiah Austin – the Bears’ athletic 7-1 center – took advantage of an undersized Kansas State front line with a career-high nine blocks and could enjoy similar success against the Cowboys, who do not give regular minutes to a player taller than 6-8 Kamari Murphy. Brady Heslip, who drained half of Baylor’s season-high 16 3-pointers in Wednesday’s rout of Texas Christian, went 1-of-8 beyond the arc on Saturday. Heslip had knocked down 26 of his previous 49 3-point attempts since joining the starting lineup five games earlier.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Home team is 12-3 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
                            * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Baylor.
                            * Underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
                            * Cowboys are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings.
                            * Cowboys are 0-7 ATS in the last seven meetings in Baylor.

Oklahoma State running out of options without Smart
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma State went from national title contender to one of the coldest teams in the country heading toward the postseason.

The Cowboys, who have dropped six straight games SU and ATS, have transitioned from Top-10 status to the Big 12 basement over the course of the past few weeks. Things have bottomed out for the Cowboys, missing star point guard Marcus Smart for the final game of a three-game suspension heading into Monday’s game against the Baylor Bears. Early odds in Las Vegas have OSU as a 4.5 point underdog in Waco.

Already losers of three in a row before Smart's ban for shoving a fan, the Cowboys were going through a rough patch. Smart’s value was estimated to be around three points to OSU’s pointspreads, but he could be worth even more after watching the Pokes struggle in the first two games of his suspension.

“So talented defensively, and that’s what Okie State will miss the most when he is out the next three games,” Michael Perry of Sportsbook.ag told Covers when Smart was first suspended last week.

Game 1 without Smart was a disaster for OSU. It came out flat on the road against a tough Texas Longhorns team that ran them out of the gym in the first half, jumping out to an early 54-33 lead on the way to an 87-68 blowout win. Le'Bryan Nash stepped up to fill the absence of Smart's scoring with 23 points, but it was nowhere near enough to help them end the losing streak.

Saturday night was a better performance at home against the Sooners, but Smart's reported three-point value may have held true in a 77-74 loss to Oklahoma. Three Cowboys finished in double digits, including Markel Brown, who led the team with 26. But a lack of stops allowed the Sooners to sweep the season series with a road win.

Going into Monday night's clash with Baylor, bettors should be wary of the Cowboys. The absence of Smart has exasperated the team's obvious issues but also exhausted them physically, trying to make up for Smart’s contributions on both ends of the floor. That could be even more evident with a quick turnaround and only one day off between Saturday’s loss and Monday’s game in Waco.

The Cowboys have just two ATS victories in their last 10 games and are a woeful 8-13 ATS on the season. Even with Smart in the lineup, Oklahoma State is 0-4 ATS in its last four meeting with Baylor and has failed to cover in its last seven trips to the Ferrell Center.
