              Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

We've been looking at Super Bowl props in this space for the last week. Here's a look at six more of them (LVH puts out a 44-page PDF of the props available). It covers pretty much everything........

              -- Phil Mickelson's 4th-round score -14.5 vs Moreno's rushing yards

              -- Brandt Snedeker's 4th round score -24.5 vs Tate's receiving yards.

              -- Keegan Bradley's 4th round score -1.5 vs D Thomas' receiving yards

-- Jets/Canadiens total, -0.5 vs Julius Thomas' receptions

              -- Red Wings/Caps total, -0.5 vs D Thomas' receptions

-- Will Richard Sherman have an INT? yes +$210, no -$250

              *****

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Happy Ground Hog Day, people......

              13) First of all, Happy Birthday KL Wheat who turns 29 (again) today.

              12) California 60, Arizona 58-- Best part of highlights was Cal coach Mike Montgomery shoving happy fans off the court who had come on with 0:00.9 left after the Bears took the lead. Wildcats are struggling to score- Nick Johnson was 1-14 in this game.

              11) Syracuse 91, Duke 89 ot-- ESPN treated this game like a combination of the Super Bowl and a Presidential inauguration- they even showed Syracuse alum Vanessa Williams singing the national anthem. For a game on Feb 1st.

While I'm here, I can't listen to Dick Vitale for two straight hours anymore; he rarely analyzes the game, just follows his own script. He has done amazing things in raising money to research a cure for cancer, but as a TV analyst, his best days were a decade or two ago.

              10) Quinnipiac 103, Siena 95 ot-- Jimmy Patsos has re-energized Saints' program, but their subs were 2-20 in this game. Quinnipiac's were 7-14.

              9) Baylor 76, Oklahoma State 70-- Marcus Smart's season might be the end of talented kids coming back for their sophomore year; he isn't having a good year, was 3-14 in this game. he would've been the #1 pick had he come out last summer. Baylor had lost five games in a row before this.

              8) Ohio State 59, Wisconsin 58-- Both teams are slumping, Badgers have now lost three in a row at home for first time under Bo Ryan. Its amazing to me how fragile so many teams are; one player goes into a slump or gets hurt and the team becomes a house of cards.

              7) Northwestern 55, Minnesota 54-- If the Wildcats are 5-5 in Big Dozen, how great a league is it, really? Northwestern has won three conference road games in a row for the first time since....1960. Wow.

              6) Bad Beat of the Day: Air Force (+9.5) loses 69-56 in OT at Nevada.

              5) Hawks 120, Timberwolves 113-- Kevin Love had 43 points, 19 rebounds in a losing cause. 25-21 Hawks scored 72 points in the second half.

              4) Sacramento State 78, Weber State 75 ot-- 10 points scored in last 0:07 of this game, six in last 0:01, yes six points in a second. Wild game, with 33 points and three technicals in the OT, including Weber State calling a timeout they didn't have with 0:07 left. Both coaches also got a T in OT, as Hornets ended a 12-game losing streak to Weber State.

Weber hit a 3 to tie game with under a second left, then Dylan Garrity stuck a running 75-footer as pandemonium broke loose in Sacramento's tiny gym.

              3) The basketball college teams use now isn't leather, it is a composite material, which is why it sometimes takes very odd bounces. Kid yesterday hit a shot from the corner, when the ball hit the back of the rim and seemed to stick there, before falling limply into the basket. Shots that hits the back of the rim first should never just stick to the rim like the ball is deflated.

              2) When the NCAA tournament selection committee meets next month, how will they evaluate wins/losses vs Colorado that happened before Buffs' star Spencer Dinwiddie got hurt? Any win over the Buffs before Dinwiddie got hurt is a great win, losses since he got hurt should be more damaging.

              1) Lakers lost 12 games in January; last time they lost 12 games in same month was.....1964. This summer will be very interesting for them.

Super Bowl seconds: A cheet sheet for Sunday's other games

Contrary to popular belief, the Super Bowl isn't the only sporting event taking place Sunday. Maybe you aren't an NFL fan or perhaps you simply want to mix in some wagers from some of Sunday's other sporting events.

Whatever the case, we've got you covered with a comprehensive betting cheat sheet from the rest of the sports world.

NBA: Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics (-5, 191.5)

The Orlando Magic look to win back-to-back games for the first time since late December when they visit the struggling Boston Celtics on Sunday afternoon. The Magic recorded a 113-102 victory over Milwaukee on Friday and will try to end a 10-game losing streak on the road, where they are an NBA-worst 3-21.

Boston is only 3-19 since Dec. 16 and has not won in the six games All Star guard Rajon Rondo has played since his return from knee surgery. The Celtics could get second-leading scorer Avery Bradley back from an ankle injury as they attempt to snap out of a funk which saw them drop near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

                TRENDS:

                * Magic are 1-5-1 ATS in the last seven meetings in Boston.
                * Magic are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 road games.
                * Celtics are 0-4 ATS in their last four home games.
                * Under is 7-1 in Celtics last eight home games.

NHL: Detroit Red Wings at Washington Capitals (-130, 5.5)

After welcoming the returns of captain Henrik Zetterberg (back) and Howard (knee) on Friday, Detroit now turns its undivided attention to the long-term absence of Pavel Datsyuk. "I don't know," coach Mike Babcock told MLive.com when asked if the Russian superstar was close to returning. "I'm just like (the reporters). I just keep asking." Datsyuk has been sidelined since the Winter Classic on New Year's Day.

Joel Ward was credited with the game-tying goal with seven seconds left in regulation after deflecting captain Alex Ovechkin's blast. Washington is not without its own injury concerns as Brooks Laich exited Friday's tilt with tightness in his groin. Laich did not practice on Saturday and is questionable to face the Red Wings.

                TRENDS:

                * Over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Washington.
                * Red Wings are 1-6 in their last seven games following a win.
                * Capitals are 2-8 in their last 10 vs. Eastern Conference.
                * Under is 4-0 in Capitals last four home games.

NHL: Winnipeg Jets at Montreal Canadiens (-141, 5.5)

Eric O’Dell missed Friday’s game for the birth of his first child but will return to the lineup Sunday. Devin Setoguchi scored twice on Friday after recording one point in his previous 13 contests. Evander Kane has missed two games with a hand infection and is not expected to return before the Olympic break.

A flu bug is sweeping through Montreal’s locker room, infecting players like Louis Leblanc, Brandon Prust and Michael Bournival. David Desharnais finished January with six points in eight games playing on a line with Max Pacioretty and Brendan Gallagher. Daniel Briere has three points in his last two games despite being limited to 16:20 total ice-time in that span.

                TRENDS:

                * Jets are 0-6 in the last six meetings.
                * Jets are 7-2 in their last nine overall.
                * Canadiens are 12-5 in their last 17 games playing on 0 days rest.
                * Under is 4-0-1 in Canadiens last five home games.

NCAAB: South Florida Bulls at Cincinnati Bearcats (-14.5)

The Bulls are among the worst 3-point shooting teams in the nation as they shoot 26.2 percent as a group with only injured point guard Anthony Collins (38.9 percent) making more than a third of his attempts. Leading scorer Victor Rudd (14.7 points) has been particularly awful from behind the arc of late, knocking down just two of his 17 attempts over the last five games. If South Florida is going to have any shot to win this game, Heath needs more production out of Corey Allen Jr., who scored 18 points against SMU to bounce back from four straight poor outings, including a scoreless effort in the first matchup with the Bearcats.

Sean Kilpatrick, a 6-4 guard, has scored in double figures in 21 of the Bearcats' 22 games and has made multiple 3-pointers in each of the last five contests. Rubles is a stark contrast to Kilpatrick, not attempting a 3-pointer all season but rather doing his damage in the paint to the tune of 7.4 points and 6.4 boards. Jackson, who has battled through an ankle injury this week, hopes to duplicate his all-around effort against Louisville - 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.

                TRENDS:

                * Bulls are 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings in Cincinnati.
                * Bearcats are 8-1 ATS in their last nine home games.
                * Under is 39-13-1 in Bulls last 53 games following a ATS win.
                * Under is 42-12 in Bearcats last 54 overall.

NCAAB: Virginia Cavaliers at Pittsburgh Panthers (-4)

The Cavaliers don’t have a player averaging 12 points or better but sophomore guard Malcolm Brogdon has surpassed his current team-leading scorer average (11.6) in the last seven games and has reached double figures in a season-high eight straight overall. Brogdon hasn’t just been scoring lately either, producing a season-best five steals while matching his highs of seven rebounds and six assists in Tuesday’s 15-point win against Notre Dame. Brogdon is also a combined 6-for-9 from 3-point range in the last two games.

Malcolm Brogdon will likely be matched against the Panthers’ best player, 6-5 small forward Lamar Patterson, unless Pittsburgh chooses to use a bigger body with 6-8 forward Akil Mitchell. Patterson has reached double figures in scoring in 19 consecutive games and is averaging a team-high 17.7 points, which ranks fourth in the conference. Talib Zanna had been a quality second option for the Panthers, reaching double figures in all eight conference games.

                TRENDS:

                * Cavaliers are 8-0 ATS in their last eight games overall.
                * Panthers are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 vs. Atlantic Coast.
                * Under is 19-9 in Cavaliers last 28 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
                * Over is 16-5 in Panthers last 21 overall.

NCAAB: Michigan Wolverines at Indiana Hoosiers (+2)

The Wolverines have not lost since Dec. 14 - a two-point heartbreaker against No. 1 Arizona - but coach John Beilein still was not thrilled after Thursday's 75-66 win over Purdue. "The one thing I've learned first as a coach is that the only thing that can be really consistent is your defense, and it's not, and we're working on it," Beilein told reporters. "But if (the offensive consistency) keeps happening, I'll be happy as hell."

Hoosiers coach Tom Crean was not thrilled with freshman Noah Vonleh, who had as many turnovers (five) as shots attempted against Nebraska. “He had a tough night,” Crean told reporters after Thursday's 60-55 defeat. “He was out there, he worked hard. He wasn’t as emphatic and decisive with the ball as he needed to be. He got the ball, but it was one of those nights. He’s 18.” Vonleh is averaging 11.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks on the season, although he has just 11 combined points over the last two games.

                TRENDS:

                * Over is 6-0 in the last six meetings in Indiana.
                * Wolverines are 5-16-1 ATS in the last 22 meetings.
                * Hoosiers are 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games.
                * Wolverines are 4-1 ATS in their last five vs. Big Ten.

                            Hot & Not

                            February 3, 2014

                            Hot

It's a bad time of year to be in the midst of a swoon, and there are some big time teams in college basketball betting action who are headed in the wrong direction. Check out the teams which have been on the biggest slides of late as we make our way towards the madness known as March.

Iowa State Cyclones (0-6 ATS L/6) – The slide of all slides. The Cyclones were a team ranked in the Top 10 in America, but all of a sudden, they have dropped three games in their last five, and they have failed to cover six in a row. There is a real threat here to maybe not totally fall out of the NCAA Tournament picture, but at least put themselves in some bubble trouble if they don't rebound in a hurry. The first game this week against Oklahoma State is definitely a losable game, but after that comes three straight games against TCU, West Virginia, and Texas Tech, all of which you'd figure have to be wins to avoid falling into that bubble discussion.

Florida State Seminoles (0-5 ATS L/5) – Speaking of teams in bubble trouble, we present the Seminoles, who seem to find themselves in this position every year in February. They might make the dance, and they might not, but regardless, they are going to need to get on Renegade and start to beat some of these teams which they should down in the ACC. Five straight ATS losses include four SU losses, and the only saving grace was a comeback win against Notre Dame at home by just a bucket in a game which could have easily been lost.

Texas A&M Aggies (0-5 ATS L/5) – Two weeks ago, the Aggies were 12-4 and seemed ready to at least challenge for a bid to the dance. However, since that point, they have rolled off five straight losses, and they haven't scored more than 55 points in their last four duels. A&M has really never come close to covering in this streak either. The team was beaten by 33 by Florida (17 points more than the spread), 28 by South Carolina (27 more than the spread), 11 by Vandy (17.5 more than the spread), 17 by Kentucky (only 3 points more than the spread), and nine by Mississippi State (12 more than the spread).

La Salle Explorers (0-5-1 ATS L/6) – At least the Explorers have an ATS push in the middle of all of this against Temple at home, but the team aside from that has watched as its season has collapsed. La Salle still has a chance to dance this year, but it is going to have to get back on the horse in a hurry with games against UMass and SLU coming up this week. C Steve Zack really needs some more consistency. He had 16 points and 16 boards in the win against Duquesne, but just a few nights earlier against GW, he didn't score and had just five rebounds.

Cal Poly SLO Mustangs (0-5 ATS L/5) – We don't spend a heck of a lot of time following the Big West, but perhaps we should. The Mustangs are routinely an 'under' team, and for good reason. They're averaging just 63.9 points per game this season, ranking 322nd in America, and on this five-game ATS skid, they have scored more than 58 points just once. The killer to all of this? The Mustangs have actually been favored in six straight games, yet they only have two SU wins to show for their work.

                              Big Monday Action

                              February 2, 2014

ESPN's Big Monday in men's college basketball starts things off with another ACC showdown for the No. 1 Syracuse Orange. The Orange took over the No. 1 spot in the nation in the latest AP Top 25 after a thrilling 91-89 victory in overtime over No. 17 Duke this past Saturday night as 4 ½-point home favorites.

The Orange now face Notre Dame in a 7:00 p.m. tip from upstate New York. The second-half of Monday's double-header takes us to the Big 12 for a conference tilt between No. 16 Iowa State and No. 19 Oklahoma State.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at No. 1 Syracuse Orange (ESPN, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Notre Dame's inaugural season in the ACC has had its share of bumps in the road with a 3-6 straight-up record in conference play. The Irish are coming off a 76-73 overtime victory against Boston College as 6 ½-point home favorite this past Saturday to snap a three-game skid. It was just their second SU win in their last eight games and they are also 2-6 against the spread during this stretch. Notre Dame is 12-10 SU overall with a 6-13-1 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in four of its last six outings.

To have any shot at pulling off the upset, the Irish will need Garrick Sherman to step up. Sherman is one of three players averaging 14 points or more a game. The Irish are averaging 75.3 points a game and shooting 46.1 from the field and 36 percent from outside the perimeter.

Syracuse has now passed its first eight tests in its new conference as part of a perfect 21-0 SU start. It is now one of just two Division I teams that is undefeated on the year. The Orange have also been a profitable team to wager on with a 11-5-1 record ATS. They failed to cover against the Blue Devils but this followed a 7-1-1 ATS mark in their previous nine games. Syracuse is just 4-4-1 ATS at home this season and the total has stayed UNDER in five of eight home games.

CJ Fair and Jerami Grant came up huge against Duke with a combined 52 points and 17 rebounds. Fair leads the team in scoring with 17.2 points and Grant is the leading rebounder with 7.1 a game. Syracuse is averaging 72.3 points, but its real strength is on the other end of the court with a defensive effort that is holding teams to 59.3 points a game. The Orange are pulling down an average of 36 rebounds and shooting 46.1 percent from the field, which are middle of the road numbers in Division I, but the end result has been pure perfection.

Syracuse has been opened as a 13 ½-point home favorite over the Irish for Monday night's ACC tilt.

When both teams were still in the Big East, the Orange carved-out a slight 6-4 SU edge in the last 10 meetings and the series is tied 5-5 ATS. Syracuse is 4-1 both SU and ATS in the last five meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in the last four.

No. 16 Iowa State Cyclones at No. 19 Oklahoma State Cowboys (ESPN, 9:00 p.m. ET)

Iowa State should climb a spot or two in the new rankings after knocking off No. 23 Oklahoma 81-75 as a seven-point home favorite this past Saturday. The Cyclones are now 16-4 SU on the year with an even 4-4 record in the Big 12. They have failed to cover in their last six games to fall to 9-9 ATS. This includes a 4-5 ATS record on the road and the total has stayed UNDER in three of five road games with a posted line. Iowa State is just 2-6 ATS in conference play and the total has gone OVER in three of its last four games.

The Cyclones are ranked sixth in the nation in scoring with 84.5 points a game and they are pulling down an average of 38.8 rebounds. They have a trio of players scoring at least 16 points a game led by Melvin Ejim's 18.1 scoring average. He is also averaging 7.8 rebounds and hitting 51.3 percent of his shots from the floor. Dustin Hogue leads Iowa State in rebounds with 8.9 and he is the fourth player scoring in double figures with 11.2 points a game. The team as a whole is shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from 3-point range.

The Cowboys come into this matchup with just one SU win in their last four games. This past Saturday they fell to Baylor 76-70 as 11 ½-point home favorites in a loss that should send them tumbling in the rankings. Oklahoma State is now 16-5 SU this season with a 4-4 record in conference play. It has failed to cover in its last three games as part of an overall record ATS of 8-9. The Cowboys are 5-2 ATS at home and the total has gone OVER in five of those seven contests. They are 3-5 ATS in the Big 12 and the total has gone OVER in their last four outings.

The big guns in this starting five are Marcus Smart and Markel Brown. They have combined for 34.1 points, 11 rebounds and 7.2 assists. Le'Bryan Nash has also been a key contributor with 14 points and 5.9 rebounds while converting on 54.1 percent of his shots from the floor. Phil Forte III is the fourth Cowboy scoring in double figures (12.4 points). Oklahoma State is averaging 83.2 points while shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 37 percent from beyond the arc. It should match up well under the boards with 37 rebounds a game.

Oklahoma State has been opened as a 5 ½-point home favorite over the Cyclones for this conference clash.

The home team in this series has won nine of the last 10 games SU and it has gone 8-3-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings. The total has gone OVER in 12 of 18 games between these two including eight of the last 10 contests played in Stillwater.

After 8 weeks at No. 2, Syracuse is new No. 1

                                February 3, 2014

Breaking down this week's Associated Press college basketball poll:

                                ---

UNANIMOUS ONE: Syracuse is the first unanimous No. 1 in The Associated Press college basketball poll since Duke had a six-week run with all the first-place votes in 2010-11.

The Orange are on top of the poll for the first time since they were No. 1 for six weeks in 2011-12.

This is the 15th week all-time Syracuse has been No. 1 and that ties the Orange for 17th place with DePaul and Massachusetts. UCLA is the record holder with 134 weeks at No. 1.

Syracuse is the fourth team to hold the No. 1 ranking this season. Kentucky was on top for the preseason poll and one in the regular season while Michigan State was No. 1 for three weeks and Arizona for the last eight.

                                ---

WELCOME BACK: Virginia, Connecticut and Gonzaga returned to the rankings this week at 21st through 23rd. All three were ranked in the preseason Top 25.

Virginia, 24th in the preseason poll, stayed in the Top 25 for the first two weeks of the regular season and dropped out until this week. The Cavaliers have won five straight, including Sunday's buzzer-beating win at Pittsburgh, and are alone in second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference behind Syracuse.

Connecticut was No. 18 in the preseason poll and stayed in the rankings for the next nine weeks reaching as high as No. 9. The Huskies have won six of seven since losing consecutive road games to Houston and SMU.

Gonzaga, 15th in the preseason Top 25, stayed in the poll for 10 weeks with the Bulldogs reaching as high as No. 11. They have won five straight and already have a three-game lead in the West Coast Conference.

                                ---

SEE YA: Two of the three teams that fell out of the poll this week had been ranked every week of the season and both reached as high as No. 3.

Ohio State, which was 11th in the preseason poll and had a five-week run at No. 3, dropped out of the poll having lost five of seven after starting the season 15-0. The Buckeyes had been ranked in the last 80 polls, the third-longest current streak behind Duke (130) and Kansas (98). Ohio State's run started in January 2010.

Wisconsin was 20th in the preseason poll and the Badgers spent five weeks at No. 4 and one at No. 3, compiling a 16-0 record before their current run of having lost five of six. Wisconsin had been in the last 19 polls.

Massachusetts, which had reached as high as 13th, dropped out having lost three of four.

                                ---

CONFERENCE COUNT: The Big 12 stayed on top of the conference race with five ranked teams, but there was change after that.

The Atlantic Coast Conference and American Athletic Conference both gained one team this week and they are tied with four teams each in the poll. The Big Ten lost Wisconsin and Ohio State and fell to fourth with three ranked teams.

                                ---

LONGHORN LEAP: Texas made the biggest jump inside the Top 25 this week moving from 25th to No. 15.
