          Friday Tips

          January 9, 2014

Rockets at Hawks - 7:35 PM EST

          Houston: 23-13 SU, 18-16-2 ATS
          Atlanta: 19-17 SU, 20-16 ATS

The Rockets and Hawks are each coming off home victories on Wednesday, as the two teams meet up at Philips Arena. The Lakers led at Houston by five points at the half, but the Rockets outscored Los Angeles, 61-42 in the second half to grab a 113-99 triumph and barely cover as 13 ½-point favorites.

Kevin McHale's team has won five of their last seven games, as the Rockets begin a four-game road swing that continues in Washington on Saturday. Houston has struggled on the front-end of a back-to-back on the highway, losing four of five times this season with the lone win coming at San Antonio on Christmas.

Atlanta jumped on Indiana early in Wednesday's win over the Pacers, taking an 18-5 edge in a 97-86 victory as four-point underdogs. The Hawks improved to 9-2 the last 11 games at Philips Arena dating back to Thanksgiving, while cashing the 'under' in five consecutive contests overall. The last time the Hawks and Rockets met up in late November, Houston blasted Atlanta, 113-84 to easily cash as eight-point home favorites, the sixth straight win in the series for Houston.

Heat at Nets - 8:05 PM EST

          Miami: 27-9 SU, 16-20 ATS
          Brooklyn: 14-21 SU, 16-19 ATS

The Heat doesn't travel far on Friday night following last night's contest at New York, as Miami heads to Brooklyn. In the previous meeting between the Heat and Nets in early November, Brooklyn outlasted Miami, 101-100 to cash outright as four-point home underdogs. Jason Kidd's club looks to finish off a perfect 4-0 homestand at the Barclays Center after knocking off the Cavaliers, Hawks, and Warriors, while also upsetting the Thunder as double-digit underdogs on the road to start this winning streak.

Miami has grabbed road victories in four of its last six opportunities, while limiting four of their past six opponents overall to 97 points or less. However, the Heat couldn't slow down the Knicks last night in a 102-92 defeat at Madison Square Garden, as both Mario Chalmers and Shane Battier sat out with injury. Since losing at Philadelphia back in October, the Heat owns a 4-1 SU/ATS record with no rest, including away triumphs at Portland, Charlotte, and Detroit.

Mavericks at Pelicans - 8:05 PM EST

          Dallas: 20-16 SU, 19-17 ATS
New Orleans: 15-19 SU, 13-19-2 ATS

The Pelicans have been going backwards of late, failing to cover five straight games, while dropping three in a row overall. New Orleans finishes up a quick two-game homestand after falling to Washington on Wednesday night, 102-96 as 3 ½-point favorites. The loss to the Wizards snapped a four-game hot streak at New Orleans Arena, while the Pelicans scored less than 100 points at home for the first time since 109-95 defeat to the Thunder on December 6. Monty Williams' team is playing with revenge after dropping a 100-97 decision to Dallas in early December, the fourth straight loss in the series.

Dallas fell behind early and could not bounce back in Wednesday's 112-90 setback at San Antonio. The Mavericks have lost three of four since a three-game winning streak, while connecting to the 'under' in six of the last seven contests overall (including three straight 'unders' on road). In spite of the loss to the Spurs, Rick Carlisle's club has covered as a road underdog in eight of their previous 10 opportunities.

Celtics at Warriors - 10:35 PM EST

          Boston: 13-23 SU, 17-18-1 ATS
Golden State: 24-14 SU, 18-18-2 ATS

The Warriors saw their 10-game winning streak snapped in Wednesday's defeat at Brooklyn, but Golden State still finished off its road swing at 6-1 SU and 4-3 ATS. Mark Jackson's club returns to the Bay Area as a double-digit favorite on Friday night as the Warriors have won four of their last five at Oracle Arena. However, Golden State has struggled as a home favorite by posting a 4-8 ATS mark the past 12 games in this role.

The Celtics managed a cover as 10 ½-point underdogs in Wednesday's 111-105 setback against the Clippers, but Boston is in the midst of a six-game losing streak. Brad Stevens' team continues a five-game West Coast road trip, as the Celtics have lost six consecutive away contests since blowing out the Knicks by 41 points in New York on December 8. Boston has failed to win a road game against a Western Conference, going 0-7 this season, but has covered three times as a double-digit underdog.

            Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Arizona 74, UCLA 70-- Wildcats blew 13-point lead, then outscored the Bruins 10-5 down the stretch to stay unbeaten.

-- Memphis 73, Louisville 67-- Someone on TV called this biggest win for Josh Pastner as coach of the Tigers.

-- Knicks 102, Heat 92-- Good for Mike Woodson, who sat JR Smith after Smith continuously acted like a child on the court.

-- DePaul 99, Butler 94 2ot-- Bulldogs are 0-3 in Big East, will need to get better athletes to win in Big East- this ain't the Horizon League. .

-- Michigan 71, Nebraska 70-- Bitter loss for Cornhuskers, who lost home opener after having couple shots in last 0:05.

-- Xavier 86, Marquette 79-- Referee Jim Burr did this game, after working Harvard-UConn Wednesday. He started working D-III college games back in 1972-- he has to be close to 70 years old, and refs on consecutive nights. Good for him.

            *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.....

            13) Redskins hired Jay Gruden as their new head coach; he used to be a coach in the Arena League, but quit to go back to playing QB on a different team, probably only time that’s ever happened. Washington will apparently keep Jim Haslett as defensive coordinator.

            12) Not sure how Bengals’ DC Mike Zimmer isn't a head coach? Does he not interview well? I heard him talk on HBO’s Hard Knocks, seems fairly normal; he is the only person who has been an NFL coordinator every year since 2000, without becoming a HC, demoted or unemployed.

            11) In college ball, Alabama OC Doug Nussmeier moves on to Michigan, where he can tutor fellow lefty tosser Shane Morris. Nussmeier was a fine QB at Idaho and was a backup QB with the Saints. Would guess Gardner goes back to WR for Michigan, but that’s not based on anything they said, just makes sense for a lefty OC to be coaching a lefty QB.

            10) Apparently Alabama let Nussmeier walk because Nick Saban wants to bring Lane Kiffin in as OC, all of which could make the third Saturday in October a lot more interesting, when the Tide traditionally plays Tennessee, Kiffin’s old team.

            9) UAB’s head coach Garrick Magee quit to become Bobby Petrino’s OC at Louisville; now there’s a slap in the face, quitting as a I-A head coach to become an offensive coordinator. Maybe he was just beating the posse out of town, since the Blazers were 5-19 under Magee’s watch.

            8) Petrino is making $24.5M for seven years at Louisville, with a $10M buyout; who else would hire this disloyal human? Western Kentucky is second team he’s quit on in $hort order for greener pa$ture$.

            7) Want to feel warmer? Dodgers-Padres are ESPN’s first Sunday night game on March 30. Opening Day is the 31st; LA-Arizona are playing two games that count in Australia before that, so the Dodgers will play three games before 27 other teams play their season opener.

            6) Knicks have to trade JR Smith, no matter how bad a loss they take on the deal; he basically gave Mike Woodson the finger when he untied a Philly player’s shoelace after being explicitly by Woodson told not to do that anymore. Lack of respect is a deal-breaker; even if they cut him, he has to go.

            5) Fordham lost 87-81 at Duquesne Wednesday; they had an odd stat line, making 16-41 from arc, 10-30 inside arc, 13-22 on foul line. Not very often a team takes 40+ treys in a 40:00 game.

            4) If you care about such things, Pete Rose will be signing autographs at Art of Music in Mandalay Place in Las Vegas on February 1, then every day from Feb. 9th til the end of the month. There is a very good pizza place called Slice of Pizza right down the hall from Art of Music, probably a better investment than paying $75 to get Pete’s autograph.

            3) New Jersey Giant starters lost 91 games to injuries this past regular season, most of any team in the NFL.

            2) 16 people didn’t vote for Greg Maddux for the Hall of Fame. It’s a free country and those people are entitled to do as they please, but that doesn’t mean it makes an ounce of sense.

            1) If DirecTV carries the new WWE Network but still doesn’t have the Pac-12 Network, someone’s getting a phone call.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Celtics at Warriors: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Golden State Warriors (-10.5, 203.5)

The Golden State Warriors were four minutes away from the first 7-0 road trip in NBA history before finally running out of gas. The Warriors get to head home on Friday when they host the Boston Celtics, who are losers of six straight. Golden State matched the second-longest winning streak in franchise history with 10 straight before suffering a 102-98 loss at the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday.

“Our visions were set on finishing out the road trip with a win and what it meant,” Stephen Curry said. “It’s frustrating that we couldn’t get that done, but it’s just one loss. We just have to regroup, get some rest and get ready for Friday.” The Warriors have played the most road games in the NBA but will get a chance for some rest with nine of the next 12 on their homecourt. The Celtics are on the back end of a five-game trip and have dropped the first three.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, CSN New England (Boston), CSN Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE CELTICS (13-23): Boston was crushed by an average of 27 points at Oklahoma City and Denver to start the road trip but put up a better effort at the Los Angeles Clippers in a 111-105 setback on Wednesday. “I thought we were ready emotionally to compete,” coach Brad Stevens said. “So that’s a positive. We’ve got to build on it. We’ve got to do it again and again and again.” The Celtics were burned on high pick-and-rolls by the Thunder and the Nuggets but made a change to the starting lineup in Los Angeles by inserting Kris Humphries at the power forward spot and did a better job of containing the play against the Clippers.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (24-14): Golden State can run a high pick-and-roll as well as any team in the league with Stephen Curry and David Lee but got in trouble against Brooklyn when tired legs led to turnovers and jumpers falling short. “I don’t think we executed offensively as well as we wanted to,” Lee said. “…so it was a frustrating way to end the streak, but overall a 6-1 road trip is very positive.” The streak allowed the Warriors to gain some ground in the Western Conference and they sit a game behind the Clippers in the Pacific Division after jumping over the Phoenix Suns. Golden State won its last three home games and is 11-4 in its own building.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Celtics are 2-8 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
                    * Warriors are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
                    * Under is 15-6 in Celtics last 21 road games.
                    * Under is 6-2 in Warriors last 8 Friday games.

                    BUZZER BEATERS:

                    1. The Celtics have taken four of the last five in the series but lost their trip to Golden State last season 101-83.

                    2. Boston G Avery Bradley is averaging 19.3 points over the last four games.

                    3. Curry has committed at least seven turnovers in three of the last four games.

                              Fact or Fiction

                              January 9, 2014

The calendar year is now said and done with, and that means that we are right around the halfway point of the NBA season. Check out some of the hot topic items as we head into 2014 for NBA betting fans, as we decipher which are fact and which are fiction.

                              FACT

Cleveland Being a Playoff Contender with Luol Deng: We love the move. The Cavs were getting the worst production in the NBA out of the small forward position, and they went out there and got the best small forward on the market by essentially only giving up a few draft picks. Cleveland is only 12-23 coming into Thursday, but parlaying Deng with Dion Waiters and Kyrie Irving should put this team into the playoffs in the East.

Miami's Need For Andrew Bynum: The other piece to the Deng deal was Chicago essentially getting the salary dump known as Bynum's contract. He'll be a free agent by the end of the week, and when that happens, Miami is said to be amongst the interested teams. The Heat badly need a big man who can stand up to Roy Hibbert and some of the other big time big men in the game, and Bynum would certainly fit the mold as a defensive stopper.

Brooklyn's Four-Game Winning Streak: Beating Atlanta and Cleveland at home is nothing to write home about, but the Nets also have wins over Golden State and Oklahoma City in this run as well. Deron Williams will be back eventually, and if Joe Johnson can continue to assert himself as a big time scorer, something which has only happened recently, perhaps the Nets have this figured out. Remember, Brooklyn is only 3.5 games out of the lead in the Atlantic Division, where four-game winning streaks go a heck of a long way.

                              FICTION

The Warriors' 10-Game Winning Streak: The Warriors are good for sure, but they are really starting to get too much respect. They had no business laying six on the road against the aforementioned Nets on Wednesday night, especially not in the midst of a back-to-back against Eastern Conference teams. Golden State will get into the postseason, and it might make some noise when it gets there, but it just doesn't have the goods to keep up at this pace from a pointspread perspective.

Oklahoma City Is the Best in the West: Serge Ibaka is sick. Thabo Sefolosha has a hand injury. Russell Westbrook's knee might never be right again. So what's left for the Thunder? If you want to know what the future of this team holds with all of these problems, just look at the loss to the Jazz on Wednesday. Kevin Durant scored 48, Reggie Jackson scored 20, and the rest of the roster may as well have been eight boards with angry faces. The Thunder need to find a way to make a move to give Durant some help by the trade deadline if they really want to be the best in the West.

Portland's Run with One of the Best Records in the NBA: We're a tad late on this one, as the Blazers have been beaten in four of their last seven games. They started at 24-5 this year, and they were also 18-8 ATS once upon a time. Even look at the loss to the Magic on Wednesday. Portland needed a 39-19 fourth quarter just to put that game away. If you're losing at home through three quarters to Orlando, who is in the midst of one of its toughest stretches of the year, you're in a lot of trouble. The Blazers seem destined to fall in the second half of the year.

                                Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Stephen Strasburg avoids arbitration, gets $3.975M from the Nationals.

-- Nets 104, Heat 95 2ot-- Wade didn't play, Lebron fouled out, Heat lost for second night in a row.

-- Oregon State is honoring Gary Payton before its game Saturday vs Cal; Payton is the best player in Beavers' history.

-- Vanderbilt threw its leading scorer off the basketball team Friday, which means whatever he did had to be pretty bad.

-- Rangers' pitcher Derek Holland hurt his knee somehow, is out for half the 2014 season. Wonder if that puts Texas in the Tanaka sweepstakes.

-- Hard to believe James Franklin could bank $700,000 a year more than Bill O'Brien was making at Penn State, but apparently thats the offer he got from the Nittany Lions. What a country.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Ranking the months of the year....

I do this once a year or so; seems like a good idea at the start, then I can never decide about the rankings. Anyway, here is this year's ranking.......

                                12) January—Dog days of winter; if not for MLK Day (a welcome Monday off) this month would be even worse. NFL is basically over, Super Bowl is next month. All you got is conference play in college basketball and some golf-NBA-NHL. Actually, next year, January’s rating could pass February, if the college football playoff is as big as I think it’ll be, but that is next year. There is nothing worse than 31 days of January weather.

                                11) February—Similar to January, just three less days; horrible weather, the same sports, but at least spring training and NASCAR start later in the month, which helps some. Plus it gets dark later in February, which is also good and now the Super Bowl is this month.

                                10) May—Not lot going on in May, though they did move NFL Draft there this year; NBA/NHL playoffs wind down and there is Memorial Day weekend, but its mostly a baseball/golf month, with improving weather.

                                9) June—Not a lot happens in June, but the weather is usually really good and I get a lot of research done. Getting married in June turned out to be a bad idea (for her), but that’s over and done with.

                                8) March—NCAA tournament is my favorite event of the year, but it’s the end of winter weather, spring training baseball can only take us so far, so this month still lags behind the rest. If I lived in Arizona/Florida, this might be near the top of the list, with exhibition baseball games to go to every day.

                                7) November—Very, very busy month for this website; college football, NFL, NBA-NHL, college basketball. There will be some changes this coming fall to how I deal with November here. I get three holidays this month which helps, but the weather also gets worse and it often snows in November. Snow is not something I enjoy.

                                6) April—First couple weeks of baseball are a breath of fresh air after winter, which jumps this month over May; NHL-NBA playoffs start and first two rounds are kind of busy, plus I always take a Las Vegas vacation this month, which never hurts.

They also release the NFL schedule in April, so research for the fall can begin. Any month win an annual Vegas vacation gets a boost.

                                5) December—Almost as busy as November, but throw in Christmas, New Year’s Eve, bowl games, my birthday and an annual trip to Las Vegas and you get an improved rating. Weather can be hideous, but people put up lights and sing songs, which helps. Plus this December I’ll be retiring from my day job, which could make it Month #1 for 2014.

                                4) August—Socially in Albany, August is the best month of the year, which is like being the tallest guy in a midget colony. Saratoga race track makes this area a social hot spot for most of the month, there’s always stuff to do at night and the weather is still good. Plus NFL preseason games are on and we’re getting ready for college football.

                                3) October—This is lightest month of the year for this website; you have baseball playoffs, football, golf is winding down with an occasional trip to the desert (I highly recommend Halloween in Las Vegas—it is TREMENDOUS). NHL is starting up.

October is a month to recharge for the busy two months that follow it.

                                2) September—Love it when football season starts; baseball season is winding down, it is still summer weather, plus you get to laugh at the kids going back to school, since we remember how much we hated that when we were kids.

                                1) July—I spend couple weeks in Las Vegas every summer, going to NBA Summer League games at UNLV; underrated, affordable fun. Plus it is indoors and Vegas is way hot in July. Like 112 or 113 degrees hot.

Racetrack starts in Saratoga when I get home, and we start prepping for football season. Every day is warm in July and there’s a lot to do.

To me, July is the best month of the year.
