    Armadillo's Write-Up

    Super Bowl

Denver/Seattle were AFC West rivals up until 2001, when Seahawks moved to the NFC. Seattle’s first-ever playoff win was 31-7 over the Broncos in the Kingdome in 1983, John Elway’s rookie year. Teams have met only three times since Seattle switched conferences, with Denver winning two of three, last of which was 31-14 Bronco win at Mile High in 2010—that also means the teams meet again next season, in the Thursday night season opener, maybe?

None of that matters here; what matters is what the weather is expected to come up better Sunday night than its been all winter in New Jersey, which favors Denver’s passing game. Broncos scored 41 ppg in winning two of three games on artificial turf this season (at Giants-Cowboys-Patriots). Seattle plays its home games on carpet. Both teams beat the Giants in this stadium this season. If they gave an over/under figure to bet on for TV ratings, I’d take the over. Lot of people are interested in this game.

Denver’s coach/QB have been in Super Bowls before, Manning has obviously won one. Seattle doesn’t have one player who has been in a Super Bowl; they have to guard against being too hyped up for the game, which you read has been a problem in previous Super Bowls. Manning spreads ball out so well, it is difficult for great Seattle defense to focus on stopping 1-2 guys, like Crabtree/Boldin with the 49ers.

This is only second time in last 20 years both #1 seeds got to this point. Underdogs covered five of last six Super Bowls, won four of six SU.

Seattle’s offense has not been as good away from home; they’re a bully team, trying to run ball down your throat. If Denver can contain the run and force Wilson to make plays to win the game, doubtful he can do it. I think the Broncos will win the game, something like 31-16.

        • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six observations from one of the worst Super Bowls ever........

-- Losing a Super Bowl hurts; showing up for one unprepared and then quitting fairly early leaves a mark. Denver will have a hangover from this.

-- Referee Terry McAulay let Joe Namath toss the coin before Seattle's captains called heads/tails. He caught his mistake and the coin before it hit the ground, getting a terrible game off to a sloppy start.

-- Denver kick returner Trindon Holliday put Broncos in a hole by running the opening kick out from seven yards deep in the end zone, setting up the safety that happened on the Broncos' first play. Players whose only job is to run kicks back don't like to take touchbacks.

          -- Seattle's DBs totally imtimidated Denver's WR's. Total mismatch.

-- Percy Harvin did more in the first half than he did all season.

-- AFC West/NFC West teams play each other next year. am guessing one of the primetime games next year will be a rematch of this awful game.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a not-so-super Sunday

          13) NFL got lucky with the weather, then the game turned out to be a skunk anyway; you charge $16 for a cheesesteak at the stadium, and you're going to get a lousy game, its just bad karma.

          12) Tennessee/Arizona State were two colleges that had the most alumni in the Super Bowl, if stuff like that interests you.

          11) There has now been a safety in four of last six Super Bowls; there had been only five safeties in the first 42 Super Bowls.

          10) Dodgers raised ticket prices 140% for this season, as expectations for the team with the highest payroll in baseball history are through the roof.

          9) Arizona Wildcats are holding their breath that Brandon Ashley's foot injury isn't as bad as originally hoped. Ashley is their best defensive big guy and will be a huge loss if he is done for the season.

          8) In case you were wondering, ESPN was showing a documentary on Mike Tyson when the Super Bowl kicked off. Always fun to see what they put on at a time when they know almost no one is watching.

          7) Indiana 63, Michigan 52-- Wolverines lost fifth straight game at Indiana and lost their first conference game this season. Yogi Ferrell made 7-8 from the arc. Hoosiers play better against the better teams.

          6) Nevada Wolf Pack is 8-1 vs spread in Mountain West games; three of their last four games went to overtime- they're a much-improved team.

          5) Oregon State 71, UCLA 67-- Beavers survived 18 turnovers and shaky foul shooting (15-26) as they rallied to beat UCLA, which has been ordinary away from Westwood. Crowds in Corvallis were hurt by Sunday afternoon games when Seahawks were playing- they should pick up now.

          4) Stephen Gallacher won the European tour event in Dubai; in last two rounds, he shot 61 (-13) on the back nine. Very impressive.

          3) Took Kevin Stadler 239 tournaments, but he won on the PGA Tour in an unusual finish where all the contenders stumbled down the stretch. Now he will join his dad in Augusta, the first father/son duo in that event.

          1) Congrats to Aeneas Williams on making the Pro Football Hall of Fame; back in August 2001, I met Williams in Canton, when the Rams played in the Hall of Fame Game against Miami.

They had an open practice on Sundays back then-- I was there to see Jack Youngblood/Jackie Slater get inducted in the Hall of Fame on Saturday, so I went to the open practice, and got this mini-helmet signed by some players, one of whom was Williams.

As he signed the helmet, we talked a little about his getting inducted into the Hall one day; my thought was if the Rams won the Super Bowl that year, he was a mortal lock to get in. He smiled as if he liked that idea.

Rams lost the Super Bowl that year but justice was done this weekend and Williams will be inducted in Canton this July. Good for him.
