  • Tale of the Tape: Florida State vs. Auburn

The Florida State Seminoles look to cap a perfect season as they face the Auburn Tigers in the BCS National Championship game Monday night in Pasadena, Califonia.

The Seminoles rolled to the number-one ranking and a spot in the national title game, leading the nation in points per game (53) and fewest points allowed (10.7) while outscoring opponents by a whopping 246 points over their final five contests. They'll face an upstart Tigers team that stunned then-No. 1 Alabama en route to an unlikely spot in the championship game.

Here's the breakdown in our betting tale of the tape:

    Offense

No team in college football had an offensive as explosive as the Seminoles, who scored 40 or more points in all but one of their games. That includes dominant performances against ranked teams: a 63-0 walloping of No. 25 Maryland, a 51-14 trouncing of No. 3 Clemson and a 41-14 rout of No. 7 Miami. Quarterback Jameis Winston captured the Heisman Trophy with one of the greatest seasons in school history, throwing for 3,840 yards and 38 touchdowns; the run game was also formidable, producing 5.7 yards per carry and 41 scores.

The Florida State offense has been getting more of the attention heading into Monday's championship game, but Auburn also piled up the points during a remarkable season. The Tigers failed reached the 30-point mark just twice, and scored 136 combined in consecutive victories against ranked foes Georgia, Alabama and Missouri to wedge their way into title contention. Auburn is fueled by the nation's most potent rush offense (4,364 yards, 46 TDs), with Tre Mason leading the charge with 1,621 yards and 22 scores.

    Edge: Florida State

    Defense

Aside from a shootout win over the Boston College Eagles on Sept. 28, the Seminoles' defense was virtually impenetrable for the entire season. No other team scored more than 17 points against the Seminoles, and Florida State limited seven opponents to seven or fewer points. The Seminoles' 3-4 scheme made life difficult for opposing defenses, leading the nation with 25 interceptions - shared by a whopping 16 players - while compiling 33 sacks.

While it didn't compete with the top-flight offense, the Tigers' defense did enough to push the team into prominence. Difficult matchups against the LSU Tigers (35 points against), Texas A&M Aggies (41) and Georgia Bulldogs (38) sullied Auburn's defensive resume, but with five other opponents held to 20 or fewer points, the Tigers proved more than capable of succeeding on the defensive end. Auburn surrendered 423.5 yards per game, 88th in the nation.

    Edge: Florida State

    Special Teams

Florida State had only 27 kickoff returns on the season - but made the most of them, ranking third in the nation at 26 yards per return. The Seminoles weren't nearly as effective when it came to punt returns, averaging just 10 yards on 34 attempts with a longest return of 28 yards. Kicker Roberto Aguayo was the busiest kicker in the league when it came to extra points - going 90-for-90 - but also connected on 19-of-20 field-goal opportunities, with a long of 53 yards.

Auburn's return game was impressive, as it averaged 24.1 yards per kickoff-return attempt - ranked 15th in the nation - on 36 opportunities. The Tigers fared better than the Seminoles when it came to punt-return success, averaging 11.8 yards on 29 chances with a long of 85 yards and a touchdown. Kicker Cody Parkey was virtually automatic on extra points - hitting 63-of-64 attempts - but was just 14-for-19 on field goals, including 1-for-4 on 50 yards or longer.

    Edge: Florida State

    Notable Quotable

"We're excited about playing Auburn ... they're dynamic, they make plays on offense, defense, special teams. (They have) won a games a lot of different ways and (are) very well coached, and it will be a great opportunity and great challenge for our team." - Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher

"We have not been, by all standards, a really good defense this year. But we always know how to play in the moment. When there's a play on the line, we've been good on third down, we've been good in the red zone, we've been good in the fourth quarter." - Tigers defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson

      • BCS Prop Shop: Auburn vs. Florida State

It's almost been a whole month since Auburn and Florida State last took the field, but the BSC Championship kicks off Monday. Why not spice things up with some prop bets? Covers Expert Sean Murphy opens the doors of the BCS Prop Shop and gives you his favorite prop picks for college football's final game of the season:

        Longest touchdown of game

        Over 59.5 yards (-110)

My reasoning for this play is simple; we're talking about two teams with explosive offenses, opportunistic defenses, and electric return games. I won't be the least bit surprised if we see more than one 'splash' play result in a touchdown on Monday night.

There are simply too many gamebreakers on the field to remove long touchdowns from the equation in this matchup.

Total rushing yards by Tre Mason

        Under 125.5 yards (-110)

Asking Tre Mason to not only turn in a 100-yard rushing performance, but eclipse that number by a significant margin is asking a little too much against the Seminoles vaunted defense on Monday night.

Florida State doesn't give up much on the ground. Entering this contest the 'Noles have held the opposition to just 3.1 yards per rush this season. Mason is a special player, but you can be sure FSU will be keying on him in this one.

        Total completions by Jameis Winston

        Over 20 (-110)

This is obviously a showcase game for Jameis Winston and I don't expect him to disappoint. Winston actually completed only 19 passes in Florida State's ACC Championship Game win over Duke.

He knows he'll need to be more accurate in order to guide his 'Noles past a team like Auburn. The Tigers have certainly been vulnerable against the pass, allowing 7.4 yards per pass play this season. Winston should find plenty of holes in this unit on Monday.

Total rushing yards by Devonta Freeman

        Over 90.5 (-110)

While Jameis Winston gets all of the press, 'Noles RB Devonta Freeman is the engine that makes the offense go. He's shown improvement in each of his three seasons with FSU - this year rushing for 943 yards and 13 touchdowns on the strength of 5.8 yards per rush.

Auburn has been anything but a brick wall against the run, allowing 4.6 yards per rush this season. The Tigers allowed 231 yards on the ground against Missouri in the SEC Championship Game. I'm expecting Freeman to run wild on the big stage.

        • NCAAF bloggers debate who will cover the BCS championship

The wait is over and the BCS National Championship is finally here. The No. 1 Florida State Seminoles and No. 2 Auburn Tigers meet in Pasadena, California to determine who the best team in the country is.

Expert NCAAF bloggers Jack Jorgensen, of the blog "FanSided" and Acid Reign of the blog "TrackemTigers" strap on the pads and butt heads over which team not only wins but covers in the BCS National Championship: Florida State or Auburn?

          WHY FLORIDA STATE WILL COVER

Most explosive offense in the country

While a lot of the focus is on the fast-paced, spread style that Gus Malzahn has instilled with the Tigers, Florida State actually has the better overall offense on the field Monday. That's not just because of Jameis Winston either. They have a strong three-deep at running back with Devonta Freeman, James Wilder Jr. and Karlos Williams - who has made a remarkable switch over from safety earlier this season.

They may also very well have the best trio of wideouts that Winston has had the pleasure of working with in Kenny Shaw, Kelvin Benjamin and Rashad Greene. You couple all of that with the fact that FSU has a offensive line that keeps Jameis upright nearly at all times - that's something that Auburn has not even come close to seeing this season, not even from Alabama.

Florida State Defense is Built to Stop Auburn

Jeremy Pruitt came over from Alabama before this season to be the 'Noles' defensive coordinator. With the athleticism he was given, he has built the top defensive unit in the country, but more importantly, they're built to stop a fast-paced team like Auburn.

The linebackers are among the most athletic that you will find and the secondary very rarely lets anything or anyone get behind them. It will be about as difficult as it can be in this game for Nick Marshall and Tre Mason to find some open space to work with.

Jameis Winston vs. the Auburn Defense is a Complete Mismatch

Even after a full season, people still haven't learned that Jameis Winston does not become affected by pressure. In actuality, the more you pressure him, the better he gets. All you have to do to see that is go back and watch the Clemson game. For a month people have been talking about Auburn showing Winston the most pressure he's seen, which is not a good thing for the Tigers.

And as far as the Auburn secondary goes, that may be the worst unit on the field for Auburn. They will not be able to keep up with the trio of FSU wide receivers and Jameis may have himself a field day in this one.

          WHY AUBURN WILL COVER

          An unstoppable rushing attack

Many talking heads thus far speculating on this matchup have Florida State's third ranked in the ACC rushing defense shutting Auburn's attack down. Tiger fans have heard this mantra on a weekly basis for the second half of the season. First, it was Arkansas who was good against the run. Then Georgia. Then it was Alabama's top ranked defense that would apply the brakes.

Missouri had the second ranked defense against the run coming into the SEC Title game and in just one game against Auburn they dropped all the way to ninth. No one has been able to slow the Auburn rushing attack, and FSU likely won't, either.

          A relentless pass rush

Florida State's mammoth offensive line has not seen a defensive line with the speed and depth Auburn will present up front. Furthermore, Jameis Winston is less mobile than many of the quarterbacks Auburn has faced, such as Dak Prescott, Bo Wallace, James Franklin, and Johnny Manziel.

Auburn typically rotates 10 to 12 linemen throughout the game, and keeps fresh legs in. Auburn has worn offensive lines down in the 4th quarter in nearly every game.

          Bigger and stronger

Florida State's back seven defenders are fast, but it's a weight mismatch on paper against Auburn's lead blockers. Christian Jones is FSU's heaviest linebacker, at 235 lbs. Terrence and Tevin Smith are listed at 215 and 218 lbs respectively. They will have to deal with Tiger tight ends and h-backs who are much bigger. Jay Prosch weighs in at 258 lbs, C. J. Uzomah is 258 lbs, and Brandon Fulse is 263 lbs.

Florida State's secondary is likewise on the light side, with no starter weighing over 200 pounds. Florida State will have a tough time handling Auburn's blockers and powerful backs down the field.

          • No. 1 FSU, No. 2 Auburn play for BCS title Monday

            AUBURN TIGERS (12-1)

            vs. FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES (13-0)

            BCS National Championship Game
            Rose Bowl - Pasadena, CA
            Kickoff: Monday, 8:30 p.m. ET
Line: Florida State -8.5, Total: 67.5

No. 1 Florida State and No. 2 Auburn battle on Monday night for a chance to be crowned champions of college football in the BCS National Championship.

For many years the Seminoles were contending for national titles every single season, finishing among the top-five teams in the AP Poll 14 straight times from 1987 to 2000. During this run they won national titles in 1993 and 1999. After struggling to get back to that point the past few seasons, undefeated FSU is officially there. While Heisman Trophy-winning freshman QB Jameis Winston (38 pass TD, 10 INT) is the clear leader of a Seminoles offense that leads the nation with 53.0 PPG, he is part of a roster absolutely loaded with stars and future NFL players at every single position. The FSU defense has been equally as impressive, leading the nation in scoring defense (10.7 PPG). However, they will be challenged more than they ever have this season, as they go up against an explosive Tigers offense. Auburn, which is also seeking a third title, having won in 1957 and 2010, lead the nation with 335.7 rushing yards per game. Junior QB Nick Marshall (1,759 pass yards, 1,023 rush yards, 23 total TD) and junior RB Tre Mason (1,621 rush yards, 5.7 YPC, 22 TD) are the most electric rushing duo in the country. Both schools are 11-2 ATS this season, and both have multiple four-star betting trends in their favor for Monday's showdown. Florida State is 10-1 ATS in games played on grass fields this season, and teams (Auburn) allowing 37+ points in its previous game against an opponent (FSU) after two straight wins by 17+ points are just 39-85 ATS (32%) over the past five seasons. This season, the Tigers are 8-0 ATS versus good rushing teams (4.75+ YPC) and 10-1 ATS after an SU win. With neither team having played since Dec. 7, there are no major injuries to report. These two teams have reached this game in different ways. Florida State had big expectations going into this season, and in a weaker ACC, many experts thought they could reach this game. For Auburn, this title appearance was unexpected and improbable, with the Tigers pulling off two amazing last-minute victories over Georgia and Alabama.

Auburn ranks 10th in the nation in scoring 40.7 PPG, but rank 107th among FBS teams with just 169.6 passing YPG. While they do not need to throw the ball very much, QB Nick Marshall (60.4% completions, 8.3 YPA, 12 TD, 5 INT) has proven he is a capable passer, and he has guys on the outside that can make the big play. Sophomore WR Sammie Coates (38 catches, 841 yards, 22.1 avg., 7 TD) has proven to be that type of player. He has five catches on the season of at least 50 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown grab against Arkansas on Nov. 2. Fellow sophomore WR Ricardo Louis (297 rec. yards, 2 TD) was the hero against Georgia when he caught a deflected Hail Mary for a 73-yard, game-winning touchdown with 25 seconds left. But make no mistake that this is a run-first offense in the triple read-option set, as both Marshall and RB Tre Mason have been running wild recently. Marshall has rushed for 503 yards (126 YPG) and 6 TD over his past four contests, while Mason has five straight 110-yard rushing efforts (174 rush YPG, 13 TD), including an amazing 304 rushing yards (6.6 YPC) in the SEC Championship. As good as the Tigers' offense has been this season, the defense (24.0 PPG, 37th in FBS) has had their struggles in the past three contests, allowing 36.0 PPG on 520 total YPG. For the season, this unit allows 164 rushing YPG on 4.6 YPC, and gives up 259 passing YPG on 7.4 YPA. The lack of takeaways has also hurt, as the team has eight games with 0 or 1 forced turnovers this season, including each of the past four contests. Senior CB Chris Davis (69 tackles, 13 PD) has been solid in the secondary, but will always be most remembered for his game-winning, 100+ yard return on the missed field goal in the Iron Bowl against Alabama. He and his teammates will certainly be challenged though, as the Seminoles boast the most complete offense in all of the country.

Not only does Florida State throw for 322 YPG (14th in nation), but it also runs for 207 YPG (23rd in FBS). QB Jameis Winston (68% completions, 3,820 pass yards, 11.0 YPA) proved to be the best player in the country this season, throwing multiple touchdowns in 12 of 13 games, and throwing for at least 225 yards in nine of his past 10 contests. But Winston didn't do it all alone, as he was helped by a plethora of stars on the offensive side of the ball. Junior WR Rashad Greene (67 catches, 981 yards, 9 TD) and sophomore WR Kelvin Benjamin (50 catches, 957 yards and 14 TD) are arguably the best one-two punch in the country at the wide receiver position. Benjamin is averaging 19.1 yards per reception and is nearly unstoppable over the middle of the field with his 6-foot-5, 234-pound frame. Junior RB Devonta Freeman is a star in his own right, rushing for 943 yards (5.8 YPC) and 13 TD. With junior RBs Karlos Williams (705 rush yards, 8.2 YPC, 11 TD) and James Wilder Jr. (542 rush yards, 6.9 YPC, 8 TD) also in the backfield, the Seminoles have the ability to really wear down their opponents. Any of these talented backs could rush for 1,500 yards and double-digit touchdowns in a season if given enough carries. The Seminoles defense has been outstanding this season, allowing a mere 269 total YPG. They give up just 117 rushing YPG on 3.2 YPC, and hold opposing quarterbacks to a 52% completion rate, 152 passing YPG and 4.9 YPA. FSU has also tallied at least two takeaways in eight straight contests, totaling 27 forced turnovers during this stretch. Senior DB Lamarcus Joyner (60 tackles, 5 sacks, 2 INT) is a star defensive back that has the ability to make plays against the run, as well as against the pass. Junior DT Timmy Jernigan (44 tackles, 4.5 sacks) is a monster on the defensive line at 292 pounds. He demands a double team on every single play, and will play a huge role in the whether or not the Seminoles will win a national championship.
