    • Preview: Ducks (10-3) at Bruins (7-4)

      Date: October 31, 2013 7:00 PM EDT

Teemu Selanne's farewell tour in his 21st and final NHL season has taken a detour, and it isn't a very pleasant one.

The Anaheim Ducks plan to persevere without him, though.

Selanne is home recovering after receiving 40 stitches in his mouth while Anaheim seeks a fourth straight victory on its season-high eight-game road trip Thursday night against the Boston Bruins.

The 43-year-old lost four teeth after being hit by the high stick of Philadelphia's Luke Schenn in the Ducks' 3-2 victory Tuesday. Selanne, who will undergo oral surgery and is expected to be out two weeks, has three goals and four assists in 11 games.

Anaheim also is missing Saku Koivu and Jakob Silfverberg due to injury. Koivu was placed on injured reserve Monday with a concussion, and Silfverberg is expected to miss up to six weeks with a broken right hand.

"You hate to see it," coach Bruce Boudreau said. "I just hate to see the whole teeth thing. Drives me nuts. It was a reckless use of the stick, but what are you going to do?"

Anaheim (10-3-0) will look to keep rolling in its sixth stop on a road trip that concludes Monday against the New York Rangers. Kyle Palmieri scored twice in the third period as the Ducks won their third straight after dropping their first two on the trip.

'It's big for us to start to link together these wins,' Palmieri said. 'Especially on the road, it's huge. 'We were able to start to get it going in the second and then poured it on them in the third."

Palmieri had only one goal and two assists in his previous 10 games.

"(Kyle's) got the scoring touch," Boudreau said. "When he's on, he's really good. I just felt he was ready to break out."

The Bruins (7-4-0) are coming off their second straight loss following a four-game winning streak, giving up two goals 6:58 apart in the third period in a 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Patrice Bergeron and Jarome Iginla scored in the third, and Tuukka Rask made 28 saves.

"We were probably a bit not as aggressive as we can play, or going after it the way we can on our forecheck and our zone time," Iginla said. "We know we can be a lot better, and in the third, we were a lot better and were able to get back into it, but just came up short."

Coach Claude Julien liked the intensity from his team in the final period, though he would like to see that earlier going forward.

"We didn't play to our identity," Julien said. "We didn't play a heavy game for two periods tonight. We had to play three periods like we did in the third and that wasn't the case."

Rask has started 10 of the team's 11 games, so Chad Johnson could be in net for the second of a back-to-back. He made 14 saves in his ninth NHL start Oct. 23 as Boston beat Buffalo 5-2.

The Ducks are likely to counter with Jonas Hiller, who made 26 saves in Tuesday's victory. He's 3-1-0 with a 1.76 goals-against average in four career starts against the Bruins.

Selanne scored in the most recent meeting with Boston on March 25, 2012, but the Bruins ended a three-game skid in the series with a 3-2 victory.

      • Preview: Sabres (2-11) at Rangers (4-7)

        Date: October 31, 2013 7:00 PM EDT

Having matched their worst-ever start, the Buffalo Sabres hope Matt Moulson can provide a spark.

If his Buffalo debut was any indication, he should be able to help - provided he isn't traded again.

Moulson and the Sabres will face a New York Rangers club looking for its first home victory Thursday night.

The Sabres (2-11-1) come off a 4-3 home defeat to Dallas on Monday as they were unable to knock off Lindy Ruff, their winningest coach, after firing him in February.

Moulson's debut provided a bright spot, with the forward scoring two goals after being acquired from the Islanders on Sunday in exchange for Thomas Vanek and a pair of draft picks. It's unclear how Moulson fits into Buffalo's plans past this season as his contract expires after 2013-14.

For now, however, he appeared to fit in nicely on the team's top line with Cody Hodgson and Tyler Ennis.

"I'm just going to take it day by day," said Moulson, who has six goals in his last five games. "If it's for however long, a long period of time, a short period of time or whatever they have planned, I'm going to play and compete, play my game and try to help this team get wins."

Buffalo's early game woes continued Monday as the club entered the second period down 3-1, though the Sabres scored twice in the second 20 minutes. They've been outscored 19-2 in the first period, compared to 21-20 in the second and third.

The Rangers (4-7-0) made their long-awaited home debut Monday - a result of ongoing renovations at Madison Square Garden - and lost 2-0 to Montreal. They sandwiched two road wins around that contest, the most recent a 3-2 victory over the Islanders on Tuesday.

"It feels good for everyone," said forward Benoit Pouliot, whose winning goal was his second goal in three games. "After last night's loss we came in here ready to play."

New York's two other scores came from Chris Kreider and Ryan McDonagh on power plays. The club had been 1 for 15 on power plays over their previous five games.

"We've worked a lot on our power play, talked a lot about it, and when you execute on something you've talked about and focused on specifically I think it's that much more rewarding," Kreider told the team's official website.

More opportunities could be available against the Sabres, who have allowed five goals on 24 power-play chances over the last seven contests.

Buffalo has scored one goal on 20 power-play chances away from home.

Both teams are among the lowest-scoring in the league, with New York totaling 18 goals and Buffalo 23.

Center Derek Stepan, who has seven points to trail Brad Richards (nine) for the team lead, has two goals and two assists in his last three meetings with the Sabres.

New York has won five of the last seven matchups.

        • Preview: Predators (6-5) at Coyotes (8-3)

          Date: October 31, 2013 10:00 PM EDT

Because of their scoring depth, the Phoenix Coyotes managed to keep their home win streak going despite the absence of one of their top playmakers.

With Martin Hanzal finishing up his suspension, the Coyotes hope for similar contributions while earning a fifth straight win in the desert Thursday night against the Nashville Predators.

Hanzal was docked two games by the NHL for charging Edmonton's Jeff Petry in a 5-4 victory Saturday. The center scored that day in the opener to a three-game homestand and remains tied for the team lead with five goals.

Hanzal is second on the Coyotes with 11 points as part of a balanced attack that's been one of the NHL's most productive with 43 goals. Phoenix (8-3-2) has eight players who have scored three or more goals - Nashville only has two.

"(Hanzal) is a big part of our team that's certainly missed," coach Dave Tippett said. "But it is what it is. You have to live by those circumstances. It's a great opportunity for someone else."

Kyle Chipchura took advantage of his opportunity for extended playing time in Hanzal's absence Tuesday, contributing a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win over Los Angeles. Chipchura had one point through his first 12 games.

Phoenix's four-game home win streak is its longest since a seven-game run Feb. 4-28, 2012. The Coyotes are 5-0-1 at Jobing.com Arena, matching the deepest they have gone into a season without a regulation home loss since the franchise moved to Phoenix in 1996.

Nashville (6-5-1) is opening a seven-game road trip there and has lost four straight in Arizona - three in the 2012 Western Conference semifinals and a 4-0 defeat in its only visit last season.

The Predators have had four days off since suffering their most lopsided defeat of the season, 6-1 to St. Louis on Saturday. Carter Hutton gave up the fifth goal with 12:12 to go and was replaced by Magnus Hellberg, who was called up from the minors last Thursday after the Predators announced No. 1 netminder Pekka Rinne (hip surgery) will miss at least four weeks.

"There are a couple breakdowns that we have to fix," said center Nick Spaling, who scored his first goal of the season.

Nashville gave up two power-play goals after killing off all 22 penalties in the previous seven games. The Predators have scored more than three goals in only one game all season.

"We need a little more production from our forwards," coach Barry Trotz said. "When we get a chance to convert, we've got to convert."

Nashville has lost two of three since a 4-0-1 stretch and lost two of three to Phoenix last season, including a 7-4 defeat March 28 in the most recent meeting.

Radim Vrbata had two goals and an assist during the Coyotes' six-goal first period in that game, and he currently leads Phoenix with 12 points.

Keith Yandle also scored in the teams' last matchup, giving him four goals in his last five regular-season games against the Predators along with two assists. Yandle has seven points in the last four games overall, with five coming on the power play as Phoenix has converted 5 of 18 chances.

Predators at Coyotes: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nashville Predators at Phoenix Coyotes (-162, 5)

The Phoenix Coyotes attempt to earn coach Dave Tippett a spot in the franchise record book when they conclude a three-game homestand against the Nashville Predators on Thursday. With 164 victories, Tippett is one behind Bob Francis for first place on the franchise list. Phoenix got the fifth-year coach to this spot with a 3-1 triumph over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, when Mike Smith made 41 saves and Kyle Chipchura recorded a goal and an assist.

The Coyotes improved to 5-0-1 at home with the victory and have earned at least one point in nine of their last 10 games. Nashville looks to rebound from an ugly loss as it begins a franchise record-tying seven-game road trip. The Predators have been idle since Saturday, when they suffered a 6-1 loss at home to the St. Louis Blues.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FSN Tennessee (Nashville), FSN Arizona (Phoenix)

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (6-5-1): Carter Hutton has recorded mixed results since taking over for Pekka Rinne (infected hip), posting an overtime win over Winnipeg before being pulled after allowing five goals on 26 shots Saturday. Magnus Hellberg made his NHL debut in relief and stopped three of the four shots he faced. Defenseman Roman Josi, who hasn't played since Oct. 4 due to a concussion, may return to action Thursday.

ABOUT THE COYOTES (8-3-2): Chipchura recorded one goal in his first 12 games this season before his two-point effort against Los Angeles. Center Andy Miele notched his first two NHL points - two assists - in his season debut Tuesday after eight games without a point over the previous two campaigns. Center Martin Hanzal will miss Thursday's contest as he finishes serving his two-game suspension for a charging incident against Edmonton on Saturday.

              TRENDS:

              * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
              * Predators are 1-4 in the last five meetings.
              * Predators are 1-6 in their last seven vs. Pacific.
              * Coyotes are 4-1 in their last five overall.

              OVERTIME:

              1. Coyotes LW Lauri Korpikoski (upper body) practiced with the team Wednesday and could return after a three-game absence.

              2. Nashville is 5-0-1 when scoring the game's first goal.

              3. The Predators have had two seven-game road trips in the past, most recently from Jan. 22-Feb. 5.
