            • Man, you and rod and Wayne are making Penguins and over look extremely good tonight! I played the total earlier today when rod posted his pick but I think I'll put some extra on it.

              Thanks, Bum! Good luck!

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Oct. 21-27.

                    Hot team

                    Minnesota Wild (3-0 SU)

The Wild had a great week as they posted victories over the Nashville Predators, Carolina Hurricanes and the Chicago Blackhawks. Minnesota has been paced by stellar goaltending from both Josh Harding and Niklas Backstrom. We'll see how strong the Wild are as the the 'Hawks come to town with revenge in mind Tuesday night.

                    Cold team

                    Detroit Red Wings (0-3 SU)

The Winged Wheel got off to a great start, typical of the stellar franchise. That went pear shaped quickly as the Wings have dropped four-straight games and lost all three efforts this past week. Even worse, the three losses came at home against San Jose, Ottawa and the New York Rangers.

                    Best Over play

                    Phoenix Coyotes (3-0 O/U)

The Coyotes are a young and exciting team and strong defensively. Supposedly. You'd think a blue line featuring Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Keith Yandle and Mike Smith between the pipes would keep scorelines low. Apparently not so. The 'Yotes sit 25th in the league with 3.17 and gave up seven to the Kings earlier this week.

                    Best Under play

                    Buffalo Sabres (1-2 O/U)

The lowly Sabres are the best Under play on the season at 3-9 O/U and have played under the total in back-to-back games heading into the new week. Buffalo is having huge problems lighting lamp and are dead-last in the league averaging 1.46 goals per game. On the flip side, goalies Ryan Miller and Jhonas Enroth were extremely good throughout the week. There's a good chance they could appease Under bettors this upcoming week as they face fellow low-scoring teams like the Dallas Stars and New York Rangers.

                    Surveying the schedule

                    - The Boston Bruins are a perfect 4-0 on the road and have two big road games this upcoming week. They are at the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday and at the New York Islanders Saturday evening.

                    - The Vancouver Canucks have been a dominant 5-2-1 against Eastern Conference opponents this season. The Canucks begin a a three-game road trip Monday night at Washington and then travel to Detroit Wednesday before facing the Leafs at Toronto Saturday night.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NHL betting: Despite rule changes, Unders cashing in
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even with the expectation that goalscoring would increase (which it still may, of course) due to size restrictions on goalie equipment, NHL Unders are hitting at 55.26 percent in all games and 57.01 in non-overtime games heading into Sunday's action.

The new rule restricts the size of a goalies' pads, making them shorter and exposing a bit more of the five hole.

Another rule change, one that kind of slid under the radar, is the decrease in the size of the net. Due to this, there is more room behind the net, thus more space to set up and make pass, or even attempt a wrap around.

There are a number of teams that have posted excellent records skewing to the Under side to start the season.

The Buffalo Sabres (3-9 Over/Under), Montreal Canadiens (3-8 O/U), Philadelphia Flyers (2-7 O/U), Chicago Blackhawks (3-8 O/U), Minnesota Wild (3-7 O/U) and Boston Bruins (2-6 O/U) are the top under plays in the league at the moment.

                    • NHL Trends to Watch

                      October 25, 2013

The notion that home teams struggle when coming off a long road trip in the NHL is overstated. This season, all eight clubs returning home following a substantial trip on the highway have put together a perfect 9-0 record, including seven victories by at least two goals. Below is the list of teams in this situation through the first month and how they have fared.

NHL HOME TEAMS 1ST GAME OFF 3+ ROAD TRIP

                      10/24 NSH vs. WPG Won

However, these teams have struggled in the second game at home off the long road trip, including several squads that lost as heavy favorites (Montreal, Ottawa, and Los Angeles). Only Anaheim and Minnesota have found a way to not have a letdown following a victory in the first game back at home. Below is the list of teams that have stumbled this season playing the second game back after a handful of days on the highway.

Another trend that has developed throughout October is the lack of success teams have as they come off of a shootout victory. These clubs haven't fared well in the following contest, losing 71% of the time through 16 games. The lone game taking out of this equation is the Stars/Kings contest on January 19, as both teams came off a shootout win in their previous game. Below is the list of the 16 teams and how they fared in the game after a shootout victory.

                            • Preview: Bruins (7-3) at Penguins (8-4)

                              Date: October 30, 2013 8:00 PM EDT

Since the start of 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins have won every regular-season game they've played against the Boston Bruins.

That surely doesn't bother the Bruins considering they won every game in the Eastern Conference finals.

Boston's visit to Pittsburgh on Wednesday night is the rivals' first matchup since that stunning sweep which saw Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask dominate what had been the NHL's top offense.

The Penguins (8-4-0) have won the last six regular-season meetings, including three in 2013 en route to the conference's best record. Having home-ice advantage in the East finals didn't matter because the Bruins dominated the first two games in Pittsburgh, winning by a 9-1 margin, and returned to Boston to see Rask make 53 saves in a double-overtime win before posting a shutout in Game 4.

"He was the difference in the series, there is no question," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said after the sweep.

Bylsma's club averaged a league-best 3.38 goals last season but totaled two in the conference finals against Rask, who currently tops the East with a 1.56 goals-against average. Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury is next at 1.79, back as the starter after being benched in the playoffs.

Fleury is 7-2-0 with a 1.78 GAA in his last nine starts versus Boston (7-3-0). He's 5-1 at home this season, surrendering nine goals, but Rask has yielded three goals in three road games and Boston is the East's only team yet to lose one (4-0-0).

Among the many Penguins that Rask held without a point in the playoff series was Jarome Iginla, who left Pittsburgh this offseason to sign with Boston. The former MVP had spurned the Bruins' advances leading up to last season's trade deadline, instead leaving Calgary to join the Penguins.

"Boston and Pitt were the two out of 30 teams that I was down to," Iginla told the Bruins' official website after making his decision in July. "I definitely have respect for both of them and I'm thrilled to be a part of the Boston organization."

Iginla has gotten hot with seven of his eight points this season coming in the last four games, including his first two goals in the last two.

He had three points in the Bruins' latest game, but they had a four-game win streak snapped with a 4-3 loss to New Jersey on Saturday.

All of the Devils' goals came on the power play. Boston had allowed just three power-play goals through its first nine games.

"Sometimes circumstances certainly make it tough and we can look at who we should blame or whether we could have been better there's no doubt, but at the end of the day we have to turn the page and move on here," coach Claude Julien said.

The Penguins are 1 for 18 on the power play in their last four games. They have outshot opponents by a 143-90 margin in that span but were riding a three-game losing streak - their longest since 2011-12 - before winning 3-1 at Carolina on Monday.

"We had some lapses for periods (during the skid) and that hurt us and ended up costing us the game," said Sidney Crosby, who had two assists. "When you do good things, you don't want to spoil it with some errors that were mental errors, and we bounced back here tonight and got a big win."

Crosby's team, though, lost winger Chuck Kobasew to a lower-body injury that will keep him out for at least three weeks. Defenseman Rob Scuderi is out with a broken ankle suffered Saturday at Toronto.

Boston's David Krejci is riding a seven-game point streak, including two goals and five assists in the last four. He had four goals in the East finals.

                              • Preview: Red Wings (6-4) at Canucks (9-4)

                                Date: October 30, 2013 10:30 PM EDT

The Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings are heading in opposite directions entering their first meeting as non-conference opponents since 1980-81.

The Canucks go for a fifth consecutive win while the Red Wings will try to avoid a fifth straight loss in the opener to Detroit's four-game road trip Wednesday night.

The last time Vancouver and Detroit weren't part of the same conference was the days of the Campbell and Wales conferences, with the Canucks in the former and the Red Wings the latter. The Red Wings started 6-2-0 after their move to the Eastern Conference, but those good times haven't lasted as they've gone 0-2-2 since.

Detroit failed to hold a one-goal lead entering the third period against the New York Rangers on Saturday and gave up a goal with 12.9 seconds left in overtime for a 3-2 defeat.

"It's frustrating," goaltender Jimmy Howard said. "Once again, we didn't really play 60 minutes and it cost us. Something has to be done about it. We just have to find a way to go out there and compete for each other. It's just believing in each other and not trying to do too much out there."

The Canucks have gone 6-1-1 in their last eight and shown some grit during their season-high winning streak. Vancouver (9-4-1) has earned two of those victories in overtime and one in a shootout.

The Canucks scored two third-period goals in a 3-2 victory over Washington on Monday. Ryan Kesler tallied his fifth goal in four games 2:53 into the final period and Daniel Sedin scored for the third time in four contests 2:08 later in the club's return from a season-high seven-game trip.

'Resiliency. You go down early in the third and we find a way to battle back and get the go-ahead (goal)," Kesler said. 'That's the way our team's been all year."

The Red Wings' longest skid last season was five games Feb. 13-21, and they'll try to avoid matching that during the start to their trek through Canada.

Detroit has been outscored 14-5 during its losing streak, giving up 40 shots Saturday.

"There's no consistency in our play. It doesn't look like we're wearing the other team out," coach Mike Babcock said. "Having a four-game road trip is perfect for us, but we've got to get way better defensively, way better in our own zone, and way better at taking care of the puck."

The Red Wings are 3-0-2 in their last five against the Canucks but fell 2-1 in a shootout at Vancouver in the latest meeting April 20. Howard started all five games.

Roberto Luongo has given up a combined 13 goals in his last two contests against Detroit.

Daniel Cleary has five goals and five assists in his last 10 games against the Canucks, and Henrik Zetterberg had three goals and two assists in the three matchups last season.

Daniel Sedin has four goals and an assist in his past four games against Detroit.
