                          • Preview: Sharks (7-0) at Red Wings (6-3)

                            Date: October 21, 2013 7:30 PM EDT

The Detroit Red Wings know they must be better defensively, especially with the San Jose Sharks coming to town.

The Sharks are the only team without a regulation loss, and the league's highest-scoring club begins a five-game trip Monday night in Detroit.

Detroit (6-3-0) had a four-game win streak snapped with Saturday's 5-2 loss at Phoenix. The shots finished even at 33 apiece after the Red Wings had been outshot in their previous six games.

"It's kind of been coming," coach Mike Babcock said. "We've been getting outshot, we've been getting outshot, we've been getting outshot. You give up too many chances, you get outshot pretty soon you'll lose so let's regroup and get back at it."

Getting back at it against a San Jose team that has totaled an NHL-best 39 goals and among the league leaders with 11 on the power play won't be easy. The Sharks (7-0-1) already have five skaters with at least 10 points, and matched a season high with three power-play goals in Saturday's 6-3 home win over Calgary.

Joe Pavelski had a season-high four points to take his team-leading total to 12 as the Sharks improved to 5-0-0 at home.

"We have a great comfort level here," captain Joe Thornton said. "We come out strong, heavy and jump on teams. We're aggressive from the drop of the puck."

Now the Sharks figure to be tested on this 10-day road swing after they went 2-0-1 against the Red Wings last season.

"I don't believe in carrying in momentum from game to game, I believe you have to re-establish it night in and night out," coach Todd McLellan said. "We're going into a building to start with that is a tough place to play and they're playing some good hockey right now. And we'll take that game first and we'll worry about the rest of it as we go."

Babcock may be looking to split up linemates Henrik Zetterberg and Daniel Alfredsson, who have combined for 20 points. The coach felt the rest of his team didn't perform well Saturday aside from those two and Pavel Datsyuk, who has nine points during a five-game run.

"I (had) Z and Alfy together and I probably can't do that, I gotta spread it out a little bit more because we don't have enough other pieces going," Babcock said.

Defenseman Niklas Kronwall didn't play after sustaining a concussion from a hard hit Thursday at Colorado. Kronwall's streak of 138 straight games came to an end, and he is listed as day-to-day.

While Detroit is allowing opponents to average an alarmingly high 32.7 shots, San Jose is second in the NHL in that department at 23.9. Antti Niemi has posted a 1.86 goals-against average while starting every game.

The Red Wings will be wary of Thornton, who has 18 points in a 13-game run in the regular season against them.

                            • Preview: Avalanche (7-1) at Penguins (7-1)

                              Date: October 21, 2013 7:30 PM EDT

It comes as little surprise that the Pittsburgh Penguins sit atop the Eastern Conference with Sidney Crosby holding the early edge in the scoring race.

Few may have expected the Colorado Avalanche to get off to such a hot start under first-year coach Patrick Roy.

Pittsburgh seeks a fifth straight victory while looking to remain perfect at home Monday night as it faces a Colorado team that has yet to lose on the road.

The Penguins (7-1-0) finished with the most points in the East in the lockout-shortened season, and they're off to their best start since beginning 9-1-0 in 2009-10 - the season after Crosby captained the team to the Stanley Cup.

Crosby scored and added two assists in Saturday's 4-3 shootout win over Vancouver and leads the league with 17 points. He has recorded at least two in four straight and has a point in Pittsburgh's first eight games for the first time in his career.

'I don't feel that different to be honest,' Crosby said, comparing this season's start to others.

Three victories during the Penguins' winning streak have come by one goal, and they've won their first five home games for the first time since taking their first seven in the 1995 lockout-shortened season.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 36 saves against the Canucks and is 7-0-0 with a 1.84 goals-against average.

"I think as a group, we're finding ways to win," Crosby said. "(Saturday) wasn't our best game, but (Fleury) shut the door when we needed him to and we found some ways to get back in the game. We still want to get better."

The Avalanche have done just that, getting off to a 7-1-0 start after finishing at the bottom of the Western Conference in the 2013 season. They've won each of their four road games after beating Buffalo 4-2 on Saturday, bouncing back from Thursday's 4-2 loss to Detroit.

Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly and captain Gabriel Landeskog each had a goal and an assist against the Sabres.

'We were talking in here that this team doesn't lose two in a row,' Duchene said. 'Right now, we're rolling, we're feeling good. We've got to get as many points as we can because we're going to go through some adversity in the season and we've got to be ready for it."

Duchene has a team-high six goals and has seven points in his last five contests.

"(Duchene and O'Reilly) have been dominant, to be honest with you," Roy said. "What I like about them is the consistency that they're bringing every night. That's a good sign of maturity. They start to get mature and they show a lot of poise and good things out there."

Nathan MacKinnon, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, is showing plenty of maturity for an 18-year-old. MacKinnon, who has a goal to go along with a team-best six assists, has been compared to Crosby with the two both being natives of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia.

Crosby has been impressed with the rookie so far.

'I don't think you see too many young guys that can shoot the puck like he can in their first year,' Crosby said. 'I think he's got all the tools - really good hands, he works hard, and he's not afraid to go into traffic areas and create chances that way."

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 28 saves in the win over Buffalo, but Roy could elect to go back to Semyon Varlamov, who is 5-1-0 with a 1.68 GAA.

Fleury, who has won his last five starts with a 1.98 GAA against the Avalanche, made 35 saves as Pittsburgh beat Colorado 5-1 in the most recent meeting March 3, 2012, for its fourth straight win in the series.

Colorado forward Cody McLeod is suspended pending an in-person hearing with the league - expected to take place Monday - for an illegal hit on Detroit's Niklas Kronwall on Thursday.

                              • Preview: Flames (3-2) at Kings (6-3)

                                Date: October 21, 2013 10:30 PM EDT

Anze Kopitar's regular-season goal drought has reached 20 games, but the Los Angeles Kings insist they aren't worried.

The Kings remain confident in Kopitar, who has a team-high eight assists heading into Monday night's home matchup against the Calgary Flames.

Los Angeles (6-3-0) is off to a solid start despite receiving no goals from Kopitar and Mike Richards. The two centers, however, have combined for 13 assists.

"Our strongest part of the team is down the middle," right wing Justin Williams said. "They do so many other things other than score, and they've certainly had a lot of chances."

Kopitar showed his worth Saturday, assisting twice on goals by Williams and once on a tally by Drew Doughty in a 5-2 home win over Dallas. He had three goals in last season's playoffs, but hasn't scored in the regular season since a 5-4 win at Chicago on March 25.

"I really don't look at it like that," coach Darryl Sutter said. "From your side it's about that, right? Goals. It's not. It's about winning hockey games."

The Kings have gone 17-2-0 in their last 19 home games, including the postseason.

"We want to be a hard team to play against," Doughty said. "We don't want teams to be coming into Staples (Center) and thinking it's an easy night. We want it to be hard for them."

Los Angeles outscored Calgary 12-4 in sweeping three meetings a season ago. Dustin Brown had three goals and an assist, while Kopitar had one goal and two assists in those games.

The Kings have killed off the opposition's previous 14 power plays and are at 89.2 percent on the penalty kill for one of the league's best marks.

The Flames (3-2-2), in contrast, are an NHL-worst 69.6 percent against the power play after allowing three goals in nine chances in Saturday's 6-3 defeat at San Jose.

"I don't think that's a recipe for success, it's a recipe for disaster," coach Bob Hartley said.

Calgary's first six games were all decided by one goal before the club was outshot 36-19 by the red-hot Sharks to fall to 0-2-0 on its current five-game trip.

"It's all stuff we can fix but it's pretty frustrating and it's disappointing because it's two games in a row that we could have won and we got zero points out of it," left wing T.J. Galiardi said.

The Flames have been led this season by Jiri Hudler, who has a team-high nine points with at least one in every game.

He'll likely take aim at Jonathan Quick, who has started eight times this season and whose 1.52 goals-against average against Calgary is his best against any Western Conference club.

Hartley will choose between Joey MacDonald or Karri Ramo in goal. MacDonald started five straight games before Ramo made 30 saves Saturday.
