Lightning at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know

Tampa Bay Lightning at Chicago Blackhawks (-209, 5.5)

The Chicago Blackhawks hung a second Stanley Cup banner in four years Tuesday and took up where they left off by rallying to win their opener. The Blackhawks look to build off that when the young Tampa Bay Lightning make their only visit on Saturday night. Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa scored goals in the 6-4 victory over Washington to start the season and the Lightning gave up a pair of shorthanded tallies to drop a 3-1 decision at Boston on Thursday.

Tampa Bay, who struggled with the man advantage at key times a season ago, was 0-for-5 on the power play in its opener without injured point man Sami Salo. Chicago killed only three of six penalties against Washington, but snuffed out a 5-on-3 late in the contest to hold the lead. The Lightning hosts Blackhawks on Oct. 24 in addition to difficult games with Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and Boston this month.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (0-1-0): Tampa Bay hopes for the return of Salo, who missed Friday’s practice with an upper-body injury and is day-to-day. Mark Barberio took Salo’s place on defense, giving the Lightning eight players at 23 or younger in the lineup opening night – four on the blue line. The Lightning’s top forward unit of Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos and Ryan Malone were kept off the scoresheet against Boston and combined for seven shots while sustaining minimal pressure.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (1-0-0): It will be virtually impossible for Chicago to match its 24-game unbeaten streak that opened last season, but they aren’t showing signs of a Stanley Cup hangover. “The guys have always been in a good place since day one of the season,” coach Joel Quenneville said after the first game. “You’ve got to commend them on how they prepared themselves.” The Blackhawks received at least a point from five of its six defensemen in the opener while blue liners Johhny Oduya and Niklas Hjalmarsson recorded plus-4 ratings.

The Vancouver Canucks dispatched the Calgary Flames 5-4 in overtime to improve the unblemished record of the road favorite to 4-0 thus far in the NHL season.

The LA Kings won 3-2 after a shootout against the Minnesota Wild as -110 road faves Thursday.

Friday featured two road faves prevail on enemy ice. The Ottawa Senators were -130 in Buffalo and won 1-0 on a last-minute goal by Erik Karlsson.

Devils at Oilers: What bettors need to know

New Jersey Devils at Edmonton Oilers (-127, 5.5)

The New Jersey Devils take to the road in search of their first victory as they begin a five-game trip against the Edmonton Oilers on Monday. With Ilya Kovalchuk and his hefty contract now a memory, New Jersey fired blanks in its season opener en route to a 3-0 loss to the Penguins in Pittsburgh. Newcomer Damien Brunner impressed in the Devils' first home game by scoring twice, but the club fell 4-3 in a shootout to the New York Islanders on Friday.

Edmonton still is looking for its first point of the campaign after dropping a 5-4 decision to the Winnipeg Jets in its home opener and being routed in Vancouver 6-2 by the Canucks on Saturday. The young trio of Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Nail Yakupov has combined for one assist over the first two contests while Boyd Gordon leads the club with two goals. The Oilers could receive a boost as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is expected to make his season debut following offseason shoulder surgery.

ABOUT THE DEVILS (0-1-1): It will be interesting to see how coach Peter DeBoer handles the club's goaltending situation. The newly acquired Cory Schneider got the nod in the season-opening game in Pittsburgh, while future Hall-of-Famer Martin Brodeur started his 19th consecutive home opener Friday. Brodeur is likely to get the call Monday as the Devils visit Schneider's former team in Vancouver the following night.

ABOUT THE OILERS (0-2-0): Nugent-Hopkins is returning sooner than expected, as he was not projected to join the lineup until November. "I'm feeling really good," he told the team's website. "The healing is done and my strength is up where it needs to be." Jason LaBarbera will start Monday instead of Devan Dubnyk, who allowed 10 goals on 59 shots over the first two games of the campaign.

Preview: Avalanche (2-0) at Maple Leafs (3-0)

Though the Toronto Maple Leafs are undefeated, they're still figuring out who is the best option for them in goal.

Jonathan Bernier will likely get the start over James Reimer when the Leafs host a more well-known goaltender, Patrick Roy, in his first visit as coach of the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night.

Bernier made 32 saves in a 3-1 win at Philadelphia on Wednesday. He then came on in relief of a shaky Reimer in the home opener against Ottawa on Saturday, stopping the 15 shots he faced as well as both Senators attempts in the shootout of a come-from-behind 5-4 win.

The Leafs (3-0-0) have trailed in all three games, but coach Randy Carlyle seems more comfortable with Bernier in net in the early going.

"There wasn't a lot of extra rebounds hanging around," Carlyle said. "When he made the save, the puck was either in his glove or he was able to freeze it. He controlled the puck, which allowed us to box out. There wasn't so many wild scrambles around the net. Hat's off to him."

Carlyle hinted that Bernier's latest performance added some clarity to the goaltending decision for Tuesday.

"It makes it easier," Carlyle said.

Toronto has five players with at least three points, two of them being newcomers. Mason Raymond is tied for the team lead with two goals and four points while Dave Bolland has two goals and an assist.

While the Leafs have allowed eight goals, the Avalanche have been much better defensively. They followed a 6-1 season-opening win against Anaheim with a 3-1 victory over Nashville on Friday, and they're about to get more help with the return of Gabriel Landeskog.

Roy confirmed the captain would return after missing Friday's contest with a minor leg injury.

"We just wanted to make sure that we were on the safe side with this one," Landeskog told the team's official website. "So early in the season, there is no point to risking anything now. It was just a minor little thing so we made sure we took care of it right away."

P.A. Parenteau scored his first two goals of the season against the Predators. No. 1 overall draft pick Nathan MacKinnon assisted on the first Parenteau goal and has three assists in his first two NHL games.

"We're trying our best," Parenteau said of his third-line assignment with MacKinnon and Jamie McGinn. "MacKinnon has a lot of speed, a lot of talent. Jamie does his thing, he has a good shot and I try to do my thing. It's been working so far and hopefully we have more coming."

McGinn has two goals and an assist.

Toronto will play without forward Nikolai Kulemin due to an ankle injury.

The Leafs last started 3-0-0 in 2011-12, and that winning streak came to an end in a 3-2 overtime home loss to Colorado on Oct. 17, 2011 - the last time these teams met.

Toronto's latest 4-0-0 start came the previous season.

The Avalanche are 2-0-0 for the first time since 2009-10, with the franchise's last 3-0-0 start coming in 1994-95 as the Quebec Nordiques.

Preview: Panthers (1-1) at Flyers (0-3)

(AP) - On the first day of training camp, the Philadelphia Flyers were already a mess.

By the end of the preseason, chairman Ed Snider had grave concerns about the team he founded.

"I thought our training camp, quite frankly, was one of the worst training camps I've ever seen," Snider said. "Nobody shined. Nobody looked good. I couldn't point to one thing that I thought was a positive.

"Unfortunately, my worries were realized."

After a winless start, the Flyers fired coach Peter Laviolette on Monday, three seasons after he led them to the Stanley Cup finals. Assistant Craig Berube, in his seventh season coaching within the organization, was promoted to replace Laviolette.

Berube is the 18th coach in franchise history and will make his debut when Philadelphia hosts the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.

Despite a preseason vote of confidence from ownership, Laviolette just couldn't overcome a punchless offense, a pair of journeymen in goal and a patchwork defense to jolt the Flyers out of their funk and keep his job.

He dealt with rumors of his firing last season, a year in which the Flyers missed the playoffs after the lockout-shortened campaign. It was the only season in which he failed to make the postseason in Philadelphia.

General manager Paul Holmgren tried to mold a playoff roster in the offseason, signing forward Vincent Lecavalier, defenseman Mark Streit and goaltender Ray Emery. He also jettisoned overpriced and underperforming veterans, like goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov and forward Danny Briere.

Holmgren liked his transactions. He just didn't like how Laviolette was putting the pieces together.

"I think some of the additions that we made this summer were good additions," Holmgren said. "I think there was some excitement about our team going into training camp. Right from Day 1 of training camp, I was concerned.

"But it was more about how we played, and it was unacceptable. We don't look like a team at all."

After a 1-5-1 preseason, the Flyers lost their opener at home last week to Toronto, then lost games on consecutive days over the weekend to Montreal and Carolina. With captain Claude Giroux without a point, and forwards Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn stagnant, they were outscored 9-3.

Enter Berube, who had 20 goals and 54 points over parts of seven seasons with the Flyers during a 17-year NHL career. He'll be joined by new assistants Ian Laperriere and former Ottawa coach John Paddock. Kevin McCarthy, a part of Laviolette's staff, was fired.

"Just because I've been in the organization a long time doesn't mean I'm going to do the same thing other coaches did," Berube said. "I have my own thoughts. I have my own way of how I want to coach."

Snider is banking on Berube to help turn the team around. Holmgren still has Snider's support even as move after move - starting with the unexpected dismantling of the young core of the 2010 finals team - has backfired.

"I think Paul did an excellent job over the summer with the three players he brought in," Snider said. "It remains to be seen if we were right or wrong."

The new era begins against a Florida team coming off a dismal 7-0 loss to St. Louis on Saturday. The Panthers (1-1-0) were outshot 34-19 after firing 39 shots on net in a 4-2 win over Dallas in Thursday's season opener.

"It was a man's game and we didn't rise to the occasion," coach Kevin Dineen said.

Tim Thomas, the former Boston goaltender named the Panthers' starter after taking a one-year sabbatical, looked sharp while making 25 saves in the opener. He allowed five goals before being pulled after the second period Saturday.

"That's a lesson," Thomas said. "That can happen in this league."

Thomas, who is uncertain to start this contest, is 14-2-1 with a 1.89 goals-against average in his last 17 versus the Flyers, including the postseason.

It's unclear if the Flyers, who have dropped three of the last four meetings with Florida, will start Emery or Steve Mason in net for this game.

Preview: Hurricanes (1-0) at Penguins (2-0)

Both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes have something to feel good about entering Tuesday night's game in Pittsburgh.

The Penguins have looked sharp defensively in winning their first two games and the Hurricanes bounced back from a disheartening loss for their first victory.

Pittsburgh (2-0-0) strung together 115 minutes, six seconds of shutout hockey to set a franchise record to start a season in a 3-0 win over New Jersey on Thursday and a 4-1 victory against Buffalo on Saturday.

Marc-Andre Fleury, replaced by the now-injured Tomas Vokoun in the playoffs last season, flirted with consecutive shutouts before the Sabres scored late in the third period.

Fleury has stopped 48 of 49 shots thus far, but to coach Dan Bylsma, it's been about more than just his goaltender.

"I like the way our team has played defense," Bylsma said. "When it has been difficult, there have been breakdowns or chances, (Fleury) has been up to the task and has been really solid."

Offensively, Sidney Crosby has goals in two straight games to start a season for the first time since 2009-10. He's never started with goals in three straight.

Evgeni Malkin has scored in his last three versus the Hurricanes to go along with a nine-game point streak against them. Crosby's point streak against them is at seven.

Malkin has one assist this year. He has never gone without a goal in his first three games of a season.

The Hurricanes (1-0-1) have had third-period leads in each of their games, but let a two-goal cushion slip away in Friday's 3-2 overtime loss to Detroit while being outshot 38-25. They held on Sunday, beating Philadelphia 2-1 while posting a 34-18 edge in shots.

"It definitely had the very same feel as the last game," center Jordan Staal said. "It was nice to get a different result with the tough ending to last time. It was nice to have a solid third period and do all the right things to get the win."

Staal had two assists in three games last year against Pittsburgh, his former team, and is looking for his first point of the year. Eric Staal had six points in those same three games but his top line - featuring Alexander Semin and Jiri Tlusty - has yet to produce a point this season.

"We look at the positive side of it in that we have nice depth right now with the other lines," Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller told the team's official website.

Center Jeff Skinner leads the team with three assists.

The Penguins are 5-1-0 in their last six against their new Metropolitan Division rivals. Pittsburgh went 2-1-0 against Carolina last year, winning the only meeting at Consol Energy Center 8-3 behind a hat trick from the currently injured James Neal.

Malkin had a goal and two assists in that game, which Crosby missed with a broken jaw.

Fleury is 5-0-0 with a 2.33 goals-against average in his last five home games against Carolina, while Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward is 5-2-2 with a 1.85 GAA in his last nine regular-season starts versus Pittsburgh.

Preview: Lightning (1-1) at Sabres (0-3)

A lack of production has plagued the Buffalo Sabres during the worst three-game start in club history.

Eager to improve offensively, the Sabres try again for that elusive first victory Tuesday night against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning.

After Buffalo (0-3-0) tied for 22nd with an average of 2.46 goals per game last season, it's been outscored 7-2 through the first week of 2013-14. Veteran Thomas Vanek and 19-year-old Zemgus Girgensons have scored for the Sabres, who hoped the early sledding wouldn't be this rough even with three teenagers and five rookies in the lineup.

The Sabres haven't gone this long without a win to start a season since beginning 0-5-0 with two ties in 1999-2000.

"We're going to have to figure it out real quick because these losses are piling up," forward Cody Hodgson told the Sabres' official website.

Buffalo's two goals match the inaugural 1970-71 team for the fewest over the first three games. The Sabres opened with a 2-1 victory that season, but scored once while losing the next three.

Their 0-for-13 performance on the power play is the worst to open a season since the 1997-98 team went 0 for 16 through the first four.

Vanek scored in the third period of Saturday's 4-1 loss at Pittsburgh as the Sabres managed 21 shots, including 12 in the final 40 minutes.

"We didn't generate a lot,' coach Ron Rolston said. "We just have to be a lot simpler than we are right now. We pass up opportunities when we do get them."

Ryan Miller has helped keep the Sabres competitive in the two games he's played, stopping 77 of 80 shots. Rolston hopes to have Miller in net after the former Vezina Trophy winner missed Saturday's loss with a lower-body injury.

Miller allowed three goals in splitting two starts last season at Tampa Bay (1-1-0), but has a 3.06 goals-against average while dropping his last two against the Lightning at home.

Buffalo outscored Tampa Bay 6-4 while winning two of three last season. Vanek has gone five straight without a goal against the Lightning, but has six assists during that span.

Tampa Bay went 0 for 5 on the power play and allowed two short-handed goals in a 3-1 loss at Boston on Thursday, but killed four of five penalties and converted its only chance with the man advantage in Saturday's 3-2 shootout win at Chicago.

The Lightning were outshot 12-0 in the first period and 39-16 for the game, but rallied from a 2-0 deficit with third-period goals from Martin St. Louis and Teddy Purcell. Valtteri Filppula added the shootout's lone score.

"I was looking for the police when we left the locker room because I thought we'd get arrested for stealing," coach Jon Cooper said. "We stole two points."

Steven Stamkos added two assists and Ben Bishop made 37 saves.

"A comeback win in this building says a lot about this team," said Bishop, who is expected to split time with Anders Lindback. "We know we have a lot to work on. We can play a lot better than that, but it's always good to get two points on the road."

Stamkos has five goals and five assists in his last 10 games versus Buffalo. St. Louis, however, has been held to one of each in his last five against the Sabres.
