Preview: Wild (0-0) at Predators (0-2)

    Date: October 08, 2013 8:00 PM EDT

Ryan Suter has played in seven Nashville Predators home openers in his career while establishing himself as one of the NHL's top defensemen, but he almost certainly won't be celebrated in the eighth.

Suter makes his second visit to Nashville on Tuesday night while looking to help the Minnesota Wild avoid dropping their first three games for the first time.

Suter departed Nashville after seven seasons to sign a 13-year contract with Minnesota in July 2012. His loss was certainly noticeable in 2013 for the Predators, who finished near the bottom of the Western Conference while Suter helped the Wild reach the postseason.

Suter has made one return to Nashville, and it's likely he'll receive the same reception this time. Booed every time he touched the puck March 9, he recorded an assist in Minnesota's 2-1 shootout victory and seemed hurt by the fans' anger.

"I'm glad it's over," he said after the game.

Suter will try to focus this time on helping the Wild (0-0-2) bounce back from a pair of tough defeats. They allowed the tying score with less than eight minutes left in the third period and fell 3-2 in a shootout to Los Angeles on Thursday, then gave up a goal with 4.9 seconds remaining in overtime of a 4-3 loss to Anaheim on Saturday.

Minnesota battled back from a pair of two-goal deficits against the Ducks, as Zach Parise scored twice and Jason Pominville netted a power-play goal.

"Thursday night, we had a real good 55 minutes and couldn't quite finish it off,' defenseman Keith Ballard said. "(Saturday), we came out and we weren't ready to play. We were down 2-0 to a skilled hockey team. After that we played a solid game, but you have to clean this up before these things get out of hand.'

Nashville, which selected defenseman Seth Jones with the No. 4 overall pick in the draft essentially to replace Suter, hasn't had much to get excited about so far.

The Predators are on the verge of dropping their first three games for the first time since 2006, falling 4-2 to St. Louis on Thursday and 3-1 to Colorado the following night.

Paul Gaustad scored the lone goal Friday as Nashville was unable to get much going offensively.

"We need some of our skill guys to step up. No production from some of our skill guys,' coach Barry Trotz said. "We've got some work to do. There were lots of positives, but the negative is we didn't win the game.'

Defenseman Roman Josi left the contest with an upper-body injury after taking what appeared to be an illegal hit, and his status for this contest is uncertain.

Minnesota center Charlie Coyle will miss 3-4 weeks with a sprained knee. Jason Zucker, who played 20 games last season, was called up from the AHL to take Coyle's place.

Niklas Backstrom, 2-1-1 with a 1.42 goals-against average in his last four against the Predators, likely will be in net opposing Pekka Rinne, 6-2-1 with a 1.65 GAA in his last nine against Minnesota.

Preview: Devils (0-1) at Canucks (2-1)

      Date: October 08, 2013 10:00 PM EDT

New Jersey Devils goaltender Cory Schneider doesn't plan to get emotional about his return to Vancouver on Tuesday night when he'll share the spotlight with former teammate Roberto Luongo.

"We're there less than 24 hours. Gotta play a game, gotta win a game. I'm not going to get all nostalgic," Schneider said Monday.

He'll get the start against the Canucks (2-1-0) since teammate Martin Brodeur started for New Jersey (0-1-2) in Monday's 5-4 shootout loss at Edmonton.

The Devils are one of five remaining winless teams after Brodeur squandered a shutout bid by allowing four goals in the third period against the Oilers.

"It's a learning experience for us early in the season, and we've got to be better,' New Jersey coach Peter DeBoer said. "I don't like leaving points on the table like that, especially after being up 3-0."

Vancouver comes off a 5-4 overtime win at Calgary on Sunday.

Schneider took the Vancouver starting job from Luongo last season. When the Canucks found they couldn't trade Luongo they turned around and sent Schneider to the Devils last June for the 10th pick in the 2013 draft.

Now the two will go head to head at Rogers Arena. While players usually like to insist it's team versus team, Schneider admits he'll be trying to outplay Luongo.

"Sure I am," he said before Monday night's game. "It's not me versus him, but generally you want to be better than the other guy."

Luongo has surrendered six goals on 58 shots in two games, but he's won four straight against the Devils, including three home shutouts.

Schneider was 17-9-4 last season with five shutouts and a 2.11 goals-against average. He looked like the Canucks' future goaltender while the team tried all season to trade the veteran Luongo.

"It's something we were forced to deal with," said Schneider, who dropped a 3-0 decision to Pittsburgh in his first game as a Devil in Thursday's opener, stopping 18 of 21 shots. "It's not that we wanted to or chose to, that's just life playing hockey in Canadian cities.

"I hope that I've learned something from playing there. I do think it was a good experience growing up, kind of learning to play the game there."

Now the 27-year-old Schneider is New Jersey's goaltender of the future with the 41-year-old Brodeur once again toying with retirement.

"He's our future. It could be as early as who knows when. I won't play forever," said Brodeur, who added that while Schneider doesn't plan to get nostalgic, it likely will be a difficult day in Vancouver.

"I can't talk from experience, because I've never played against my old team. But, these are things in his career that are once in a lifetime. It'll be an exciting day, hard day for sure. I think he'll be alright."

While it will be a quick visit for the Devils, there's a good chance Schneider and Luongo will find time for a few words between friends.

"I learned a lot from Roberto, whether it was on the ice or off the ice," Schneider said. "The way he dealt with some situations there that were fair or unfair, he put on a smile and did what was best for the team. And that's not easy to do, especially for a guy who has accomplished as much as he has and has as much pride as he has.

"He always did as much as he could do to support me, to put the team first."

The Canucks have won 8 of the last 10 meetings dating to the 2001-02 season.

Preview: Rangers (1-1) at Sharks (2-0)

        Date: October 08, 2013 10:30 PM EDT

The New York Rangers recorded their first win in captain Ryan Callahan's season debut, though it was Brad Richards making the biggest impact.

They'll both likely need to contribute on Tuesday night to capture a victory against the San Jose Sharks, whose offense looks impressive.

New York (1-1-0) continued its nine-game season-opening trip during Madison Square Garden's renovations with a 3-1 win at Los Angeles on Monday. Richards provided his first two goals of the season.

Richards had just 11 goals over 46 contests and one point in 10 postseason games last year. The also oft-maligned Rick Nash - who tallied one goal in 12 postseason contests - assisted on both of Richards' scores.

Callahan, who didn't record a shot on goal in 11:16 of ice time in his return from offseason shoulder surgery, left the game in the second period after cutting his mouth during a collision, but later returned.

Ryan McDonagh was credited with the team's third goal 4:39 into the third period after merely trying to clear the puck. Kings goalie Jonathan Quick attempted to play it after skating out of the crease, but accidentally deflected the puck in.

"I really liked the way we responded after they scored,' coach Alain Vigneault said of his first victory with his new club. "We came right back at them and we kept pushing the pace. Obviously, we got a little bit lucky on the third goal, but part of this game. You need a little bit of luck, and we got it there.'

As coach of Vancouver from 2006-07 to 2012-13, Vigneault was 11-12-4 against San Jose.

Richards has 21 points in 25 career games against the Sharks.

Callahan notched two goals and an assist in New York's last meeting with the Sharks, a 5-2 home win Oct. 31, 2011. He has five goals and two assists in five career games versus San Jose.

The Sharks (2-0-0) are coming off 4-1 home wins over Phoenix and Vancouver. Rookie center Tomas Hertl - the 17th overall pick in the 2012 draft - scored his first two career goals in the first period Saturday against the Coyotes, one of which came on the power play.

"I think it's great, you can see how he's having fun with it and he's smiling so much," said Patrick Marleau, who accounted for the other power-play goal as San Jose capitalized on two of four chances. "He brings a lot of energy to us and it's fun to see."

San Jose's 51 shots marked the fourth-highest total in franchise history. The Sharks recorded 35 shots in their opener against the Canucks.

Their 31.8 shots per game last year was the league's fourth-highest average

"When you put up 50 shots you get rewarded," said Marc-Edouard Vlasic, who assisted on two goals.

Joe Thornton has tallied 31 points in 30 career games against the Rangers.

The Sharks are just 3-10-1 with two ties all-time at home versus New York.

Preview: Blackhawks (1-0) at Blues (2-0)

                            Date: October 09, 2013 8:00 PM EDT

The St. Louis Blues have done their best in past meetings to counter Chicago's explosive offense with a physical brand of hockey, and that likely won't change when they host the Blackhawks on Wednesday night.

St. Louis, though, has proved through its first two contests that it can light up the scoreboard as well.

A popular pick to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history, the Blues (2-0-0) are on the verge of winning their first three games for the first time since 1993 while scoring goals in bunches.

They netted the game's first three goals within 10 minutes in a 4-2 win over Nashville on Thursday before scoring four in the second period of Saturday's 7-0 win over Florida.

Brenden Morrow and Derek Roy, signed in the offseason to help upgrade an offense that finished near the middle of the league in scoring last season, each scored Saturday, while Jaroslav Halak recorded his franchise-record 17th shutout with 19 saves.

"We knew all along that we probably don't have that superstar talent, but we're a grinding team that's solid throughout,' said Morrow, whose goal was the 250th of his career. "Anyone can be the hero any given night.'

Jaden Schwartz added a goal and two assists, and he scored twice as the Blues won the most recent meeting with Chicago 3-1 on April 27 in another physical battle between the teams that has become the norm in recent years.

The Blackhawks mostly have withstood those tests, having won five of the last seven matchups overall, and Patrick Kane said the defending Stanley Cup champions know what to expect Wednesday.

"We know they're going to try and bring that physical element to the game," Kane said. "That's fine with us, we'll play that way and try to capitalize on power plays and scoring chances, whatever it may be."

Those battles have added intensity to a rivalry sure to pick up even more steam now that Chicago's historic rival, Detroit, is playing in the Eastern Conference.

"We feel they're our new rivalry now with Detroit leaving the division," forward Bryan Bickell said. "It's going to be a like a playoff atmosphere for sure because they're physical and a hard team to play against in their building."

The league's realignment has put more emphasis on divisional play, and the Blackhawks and Blues are expected to battle for the top spot in the revamped Central.

"You're looking at St. Louis thinking this could be a very important game the way things set up over the course of the season," coach Joel Quenneville said. "I'm sure they're excited about playing us as well."

Chicago (1-0-1) will be looking to bounce back after falling 3-2 in a shootout to Tampa Bay on Saturday despite outshooting the Lightning 39-16 and not allowing a shot on goal in the first period.

Kane and Brandon Saad each scored their second goal of the season.

"It was pretty near a perfect game for us,' said goaltender Corey Crawford, who made 14 saves. "I had to find a way to come up with one save at the end to shut it down, and I didn't.'

Crawford is 6-0-1 with a 1.44 goals-against average in his last six appearances against the Blues, while Halak is 3-1-3 with a 2.08 GAA in seven career starts against Chicago.

Preview: Canadiens (1-1) at Flames (1-0)

                              Date: October 09, 2013 8:00 PM EDT

Lars Eller and the Montreal Canadiens were feeling good after posting their first victory over the weekend.

The mood could become more somber in Calgary, where they haven't won in almost 12 years.

The Canadiens try to snap a seven-game winless stretch at Scotiabank Saddledome when they begin a four-game road trip against the Flames on Wednesday night.

After suffering a 4-3 season-opening loss to Toronto, Montreal (1-1-0) bounced back Saturday with a 4-1 win over Philadelphia. Eller was one of four players to tally a goal and an assist and Alex Galchenyuk added two helpers.

"I think that's the strength of our team, the depth of our scoring," captain Brian Gionta told the team's official website. "You look up and down the lineup, we have three lines that can score goals and that's a huge key for us."

On the verge of a possible breakout campaign, the 24-year-old Eller has already notched three goals and two assists.

"I got off on the right foot," he said. "The whole line has been playing great. We're creating space for each other. If you create chances, the goals are going to come."

The Canadiens now hit the road, where they went 15-7-2 last season to finish with 32 points, tied for fourth-most in the NHL. Montreal, however, is 0-6-0 with one tie in its last seven road games against the Flames, losing the last six by a combined 24-12 score.

The Canadiens, who have also dropped three straight and six of seven in the series overall, haven't won in Calgary since a 4-2 victory Jan. 5, 2002.

"We've got to focus on Calgary first," defenseman Josh Gorges said. "You can't worry about what the outcome is going to be at the end of four games. It's too far ahead to think that way.

"I think that moving forward on this road trip, we need to keep on building on what we did here and keep getting better."

The Flames (1-0-2) have compiled at least one point in each of their first three contests after falling 5-4 to Vancouver in overtime Sunday. Joey MacDonald stopped just 23 shots for Calgary, which went 0 for 3 on the power play for the second straight game.

The Flames are 1 for 11 on the man advantage and have allowed 12 goals.

"We have some kinks to work out of our system," coach Bob Hartley told the Flames' official website. "We have to learn to kick the other teams rather than kicking ourselves at the wrong time of the game, but if it would be by a lack of commitment or a lack of work, I'd be very worried.

"It's either a lack of experience or right now, a lack of execution and that's my part. I'll take the responsibilities. We need to keep moving forward with those players, keep pushing them, keep motivating them."

Former Flames forward Rene Bourque, who was sent to Montreal in January 2012, will play his 500th career game in his second trip back since the trade.

"I think I was a little nervous last time just because it was my first game against them. I'm pretty relaxed coming back here now," he said. "It's nothing like it was the first game back."

Montreal's Carey Price, who made 22 saves Saturday, has compiled a 4.37 goals-against average in losing each of his three starts against Calgary.

Canadiens left wing Max Pacioretty is likely to return after sitting out against the Flyers with an arm injury.

Preview: Senators (1-0) at Kings (1-2)

                                Date: October 09, 2013 10:30 PM EDT

Jonathan Quick should get a chance to redeem himself.

The Los Angeles Kings would just like to avoid a three-game slide.

Quick will try to bounce back from an embarrassing gaffe and help the Kings continue their home dominance of the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night.

Quick started this season in strong fashion, stopping 27 of 29 shots before turning aside both shootout attempts in Thursday's 3-2 win over Minnesota. He hasn't been nearly that effective over the last two games, giving up seven goals on 55 shots.

His latest performance, however, included his worst moment of the young season. The All-Star goaltender left the net to play a dump-in off the boards early in the third period, but lost his stick before the puck deflected off his blocker and trickled in for a short-handed goal - and the final tally - in a 3-1 defeat to the New York Rangers on Monday.

"You play 60 minutes and you try to stop the puck for your teammates, that's the thought process," said Quick, the 2012 Conn Smythe Award winner during the Kings' run to their first Stanley Cup. "Everyone gives up that goal, and it's part of the game."

Facing Ottawa (1-0-1) - especially at home - could be just what Quick and the Kings need.

Los Angeles has won seven of the last nine meetings with the Senators, and owns an 11-1-0 record with one tie in 13 all-time at home.

Quick is 3-1-0 with a 1.76 GAA and one shutout in four career starts versus Ottawa, winning both at home while making 27 saves in a 4-1 victory in the latest matchup Jan. 23, 2012.

While Quick is looking to continue that success and show some improvement, so are the rest of the Kings. They've scored half of their six goals on the power play, but are looking for more intensity at even strength.

"Our five-on-five play needs to improve," right wing Justin Williams said. "It's non-existent right now. Certainly we need to get dirty. We need to become whole, put our work before skill, and get dirty and greasy, bang some in and rebound."

The Senators are on a season-opening six-game road trip and trying to end a five-game losing streak and six-game winless skid in Los Angeles since their lone victory there on Jan. 11, 2000.

So far, coach Paul MacLean is encouraged after opening the season with a 1-0 win at Buffalo on Friday before squandering a two-goal lead to fall 5-4 in a shootout at Toronto the following day.

"We come on the road and get three of a possible four points, had the lead at 4-2 halfway through the game so, yeah, we can take that out of the game," MacLean said. "The way we played over the course of the 60 minutes, much like (Friday), we can take the good, throw out the bad and get on with our season."

Jason Spezza, who missed all but five games last season due to back surgery, got his first goal of 2013-14 on Saturday after coming up empty on seven shots in the opener. The center has no points and is a minus-3 in four games at Los Angeles.

Kyle Turris leads the Senators with four points through two games.
