College football odds: Week 7 opening line report

With the NCAA football schedule moving along to Week 7, a new chapter in one of the game's greatest rivalries will be written.

The annual matchup between the Oklahoma Sooners (5-0 SU, 3-2 ATS) and Texas Longhorns (3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS) - the Red River Rivalry - will be played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas and the Horns will look to put a stop to the Sooners' dominance in the matchup over the previous three seasons.

The Sooners are 3-0 SU and ATS in the past three meetings and have put up a combined 118 points on the board in their past two victories.

According to Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club, he and his team of oddsmakers were all on the same page when it came time to discuss this matchup.

"With Texas missing QB David Ash, they're not the same team," Korner told Covers. "This is on the same neutral field and Oklahoma is the better team. We made the game Oklahoma -12 and had very little diversity among the five oddsmakers."

Florida Gators at LSU Tigers (-8)

LSU (5-1 SU, 3-2-1 ATS) suffered a tough loss to Georgia back on Sept. 28, but got back in the winning column as they trounced Mississippi State 59-26 in Week 6.

The Tigers boast one of the top offenses in the SEC and go up against a stingy Florida Gators (4-1 SU, 2-3 ATS) defense, which is allowing 12.2 points per game - good enough for fourth overall in the country.

Korner and his team were on a variety of numbers before settling at LSU -8.

"We were mixed on this. The range went from LSU -5.5 to -11," said Korner. "I like the LSU 'pit' they play in as an advantage. We stuck it in the middle at LSU -8 as Florida doesn't appear to be that mighty powerhouse we've seen in recent years."

Texas A&M Aggies at Mississippi Rebels (+7)

After a very impressive 3-0 start which generated a lot of buzz, Ole Miss (3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS) has dropped a pair of tough road games in the past two weeks.

Despite the back-to-back losses, Ole Miss still gets respect and faces a tough task in Week 7 with Johnny Manziel and the Aggies (4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS) coming to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

"We went from Texas A&M -5 to -8 and I sent out -7," says Korner. "You don't want to be too low with A&M's offense but Mississippi is no pushover so we didn't get too crazy."

Oregon Ducks at Washington Huskies (+16)

The Ducks (5-0 SU, 5-0 ATS) keep putting up basketball-like numbers and are coming off a 57-16 win at Colorado in Week 6. The Ducks are the first team to own a 5-0 record against the spread and will be another big, double-digit fave against Pac-12 foe Washington in Week 7.

The Huskies (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS) put up a good fight against Stanford but ultimately lost by a field goal in California.

"We had a range from -14 to -18," Korner said. "Washington's good showing versus Stanford holds this line in check but we still sent our Oregon -16. There's no problem in rooting for Oregon if we were too high. I'll take my chances with that."

            Top 25 Betting Recap - Week 6

            October 6, 2013

Week 6 of the 2013 NCAA football betting season is in the books, and today, we're going to take a look at each of the Top 25 teams in the land and see how they fared from an ATS perspective over the course of this past week.

(Results in parentheses represent SU Result-ATS Result)

            1: Alabama (W-L vs. Georgia State 45-3)
It still wasn't quite what Nick Saban was hoping for. Bama is now just 2-3 ATS and looks beatable.

            2: Oregon (W-W vs. Colorado 57-16)
Oregon had 29 on the board in the first quarter and Marcus Mariota finished with seven total TDs.

            3: Clemson (W-W vs. Syracuse 49-14)
Clemson continues to march, as a 35-7 lead at halftime was good enough to pound the 'Cuse at the Carrier Dome.

            4: Ohio State (W-W vs. Northwestern 40-30)
It was dangerous every step of the way, but the Buckeyes did best the Wildcats and cover the closing number in one of the most incredible frontdoor covers in the history of sportsbetting.

            5: Stanford (W-L vs. Washington 31-28)
Washington hit the backdoor to cover against the Cardinal, but the win was never in doubt.

            6: Georgia (W-L vs. Tennessee 34-31)
Georgia really had no business beating Tennessee and was lucky to survive.

            7: Louisville (W-L vs. Temple 30-7)
Ho hum. Another 348 yards for Teddy Ballgame.

            8: Florida State (W-W vs. Maryland 63-0)
FSU might be the most dangerous team in the country, and Jameis Winston might be the new Heisman favorite after torching the Terps.

            9: Texas A&M (Bye)
Kevin Sumlin might have spent the off week preparing his resume for the jobs at USC or Texas.

            10: LSU (W-W vs. Mississippi State 59-26)
This was a 31-26 game at the end of the third quarter, and then the floodgates opened.

            11: Oklahoma (W-L vs. TCU 20-17)
The OU defense strikes again, holds the Horned Frogs to just 210 yards of total offense in an ugly three-point triumph.

            12: UCLA (W-W vs. Utah 34-27)
It was never an easy game, but the Bruins put down the Utes in SLC and moved up in the polls as a result.

            13: South Carolina (W-L vs. Kentucky 35-28)
Think Jadeveon Clowney even cares about SC any longer? He sat out because he was "sore" and Steve Spurrier doesn't seem to care about him anymore. Another non-cover for the 'ol ball coach.

            14: Miami (W-W vs. Georgia Tech 45-30)
The Canes dropped over 550 yards on the Yellow Jackets, and they needed every single one of those yards to pull out the home win and cover.

            15: Washington (L-W vs. Stanford 31-28)
Keith Price torched the Stanford defense for 350 yards and a pair of TD strikes in Saturday's tough defeat; it gets no easier next week with Oregon paying a visit to Seattle.

            16: Northwestern (L-L vs. Ohio State 40-30)
The Wildcats represented themselves well, but they were never good enough to beat OSU; they're carelessness at the end of the game saw a whole bunch of money exchange hands the other way.

            17: Baylor (W-W vs. West Virginia 73-42)
In two games against WVU since it joined the Big 12, the Bears now have 1,564 yards, 72 first downs, and 136 points… and a 1-1 record.

            18: Florida (W-W vs. Arkansas 30-10)
UF fell behind 7-0 early, but once it got rolling, it was never tested by the Hogs.

            19: Michigan (W-W vs. Minnesota 42-13)
It took 28 second half points to really put aside the Golden Gophers once and for all.

            20: Texas Tech (W-W vs. Kansas 54-16)
The Red Raiders were down 10-0 in the middle of the second quarter, and then they rolled off 54 straight points to down the pitiful Jayhawks.

21: Oklahoma State (W-L vs. Kansas State 33-29)
Don't be shocked if the Cowboys are facing a four or a five-loss season. They were once again lucky to escape against KSU.

22: Arizona State (L-L vs. Notre Dame 37-34)
The Sun Devils drop out of the Top 25 after QB Taylor Kelly threw away a chance at beating the Irish.

            23: Fresno State (W-W vs. Idaho 61-14)
Fresno State dropped 47 on Idaho in the first half before the team finally stopped laughing.

            24: Ole Miss (L-L vs. Auburn 30-22)
It was predicted to be a tough game, but the Rebels will still drop out of the Top 25 as a result of falling to Auburn and looking real mediocre in doing so.

            25: Maryland (L-L vs. Florida State 63-0)
The Terps never did end up beating Florida State in Tallahassee in school history, and they'll be glad to be done with Doak Campbell Stadium after losing 63-0 Saturday.

              College Recap - Week 6

              October 6, 2013

              Saturday betting notes:

              -- Home teams went 27-22 straight-up

-- Favorites put together a 38-11 SU and 26-23 record against the spread

-- The 'over' hit in 27 of 49 games

-- The biggest outright underdog upset came by Florida International, who knocked off Southern Mississippi as 17-point dogs, 24-34.

              Luck of the Buckeyes:

Ohio State and Northwestern went back and forth in an entertaining Big 10 affair. The Buckeyes rallied from a 10-point deficit to take a 34-30 lead as 6 ½-point favorites with five minutes left. The last chance for the Wildcats to score deep in their own territory turned into a disaster for Northwestern backers, as a multitude of hook-and-laterals resulted in a loose ball in the end zone. The Buckeyes fell on the ball for a touchdown with no time remaining and cashed, 40-30.

              American Dreams:

The bottom-tiered teams of the newly formed American Athletic Conference shocked bettors with several underdog covers. Temple, Memphis, SMU, and USF all cashed on Saturday in the 'dog role, while South Florida upended Cincinnati as home 'dogs for its first win on the season.

              Close, but no SECigar:

Tennessee and Kentucky made late rallies as underdogs and managed covers, but the Volunteers fell in overtime as 13-point 'dogs to Georgia, while the Wildcats scored in garbage time to cover at South Carolina. Auburn continues to turn heads in the SEC West after downing Ole Miss as short home 'dogs, as the Tigers have a cupcake game this week against Western Carolina.

              Another Chalky Call:

Four of the top teams in the ACC cruised to favorite victories inside the conference. Florida State, Clemson, Miami, and Virginia Tech all won by double-digits, as the four clubs are a combined 9-0 in ACC play. Meanwhile, N.C. State and Virginia each were tripped up as favorites, including an ugly home loss from the Cavaliers to Ball State.

              Tiger Talk:

Every Sunday, Brian Edwards updates the VegasInsider.com Top 25. After watching the action this weekend, Baylor made the biggest jump from 14th to 9th. South Carolina saw the biggest drop, falling from 7th to 13rd in the VI rankings. Eight schools from the SEC reside in the VI Top 25, including Missouri and Auburn breaking through this week.

                Week 6 Rewind

                October 7, 2013

Every bettor has had one of those games. More than likely, avid gamblers have at least a dozen bad beats that will never be forgotten.

On Saturday night in Evanston, I backed Northwestern as a seven-point home underdog in a game I had literally been eyeing since June. Everything set up perfectly for the Wildcats, who had two weeks to prepare for unbeaten Ohio State.

The Buckeyes were playing their sixth game in six weeks and fell into a vintage letdown situation. That’s because they had beaten Wisconsin the previous week in their biggest game of the season since the Badgers are the only threat to OSU in the Leaders Division.

Northwestern jumped out to an early lead and was in control of the game for the first three quarters. However, Pat Fitzgerald’s team had settled for three short field goals (23, 29 & 32-yarders) on trips into the red zone.

A 23-13 Northwestern lead late in the third quarter turned into a 27-23 deficit with 10:52 remaining after Ohio St. RB Carlos Hyde scored on a pair of touchdowns runs. The Wildcats answered on a 12-yard scoring strike from Trevor Siemian to Cameron Dickerson for a 30-27 advantage with 9:10 left.

Urban Meyer’s team went back in front 34-30 on Hyde’s third touchdown scamper from seven yards out with 5:22 remaining. Northwestern put together several first downs and was on the move in Buckeyes’ territory facing a fourth-and-inches play with 2:43 left.

QB Kain Colter moved from the shotgun under center at the last second to attempt a sneak. Colter initially bobbled the snap but quickly scooped the ball up and surged forward. Replays clearly indicated that his forward progress went beyond the yellow line for a first-down gain. But Northwestern was given a terrible spot and despite challenging the play, replay officials upheld the inexplicable call.

Northwestern burned its final two timeouts and forced a punt with a three and out. But with just 21 seconds remaining when it got the ball back, there was little hope. At this point, Northwestern backers simply wanted to avoid a pick-six or a scoop and score.

Ohio St. got a sack on the first play. After spiking the ball to stop the clock, there just a few ticks left. Northwestern threw a pass beyond its 20 and then a few laterals, the last of which was deflected by a Buckeye defender sending the ball bouncing toward the end zone.

A Northwestern player had the first and best shot at recovering the ball, which would’ve resulted in a safety and still allowed gamblers on the Wildcats to cash tickets. But the Northwestern player couldn’t secure the ball and OSU’s Joey Bosa recovered it for an unlikely TD.

Therefore, Ohio St.’s 40-30 victory resulted in undoubtedly the worst wrong-side winner of the 2013 college football campaign. In recent memory, I’d say only those that had Duke as a double-digit underdog in its crazy bowl game against Cincinnati last season can claim a more unfortunate loser.

The Buckeyes improved to 18-0 under Urban Meyer, but the win over 15th-ranked Northwestern is their only triumph over a school ranked higher than No. 20. They will be double-digit favorites in every remaining game until the regular-season finale at Michigan.

Meanwhile, Northwestern has zero time to sulk with a trip to Camp Randall to face Wisconsin looming on Saturday. As of early Monday afternoon, most books had the Badgers favored by 10.

Another Week 6 thriller went down at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, where Tennessee had a great shot at beating a ranked team for the first time since a 2009 home win over South Carolina.

Playing without All-American RB Todd Gurley (ankle), Georgia was going to be fine thanks to the presence of back-up Keith Marshall, who would start at just about any other school in America. But Marshall went down in the first quarter with a torn ACL that will keep him out for the rest of the season.

Nevertheless, UGA took a 17-3 lead into halftime and the UT faithful were getting restless. The third quarter began with a three and out for the Vols, and then the Bulldogs promptly marched into the red zone.

But the drive stalled and UGA’s Marshall Morgan missed a 39-yard field-goal attempt. Suddenly UT had life if it could get anything going offensively. And that’s exactly what happened as Butch Jones’s team marched 78 yards on seven plays.

Justin Worley’s 33-yard pass to Alton Howard was the big play of the drive that was capped by a 19-yard scoring strike from Worley to MarQuez North. Just like that, the crowd was back into it and we had a ballgame.

Late in the third quarter, UGA was punting from deep in its own territory when Tennessee got a block. Devaun Swafford scooped up the loose ball a trotted 15 yards into the end zone to tie the game.

From there, UGA players started dropping like flies with injuries. Mark Richt’s team was already without Gurley and Marshall, two of the nation’s top RBs, not to mention leading returning receiver Malcolm Mitchell, who tore his ACL in the season-opening loss at Clemson. Then WR Justin Scott-Wesley went down with a season-ending injury and WR Michael Bennett also left the game.

Aaron Murray was surrounded by third-string players in the huddle, but he responded with a huge play. On a second and five, Murray got first-down yardage on a QB draw and then got greedy. He split a pair of defenders at the second level and went 57 yards before being stopped at the three. Brendan Douglas, a true freshman and ‘two-star recruit,’ punched it in for a 24-17 UGA lead on the next play.

UGA appeared to get a three and out but had too many players on the field for the fourth-down punt. The five-yard penalty made it fourth and one for UT on its own 34. Jones decided to roll the dice and go for it. Rajion Neal made the gamble pay off when he raced 43 yards for a first down and then some.

Five plays later, Neal scored on a one-yard plunge to tie it up again. With 1:54 remaining, Neal scored again on a seven-yard run to cap a 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive, giving the Vols a 31-24 advantage.

But Murray didn’t flinch. The senior signal caller calmly marched his team into scoring position. Working without any timeouts, Georgia faced a third and goal from UT’s two with five ticks left. Murray threw a dart to Rantavious Wooten on a short slant for a TD to force overtime.

On UT’s opening possession of the extra session, it appeared to take the lead on a seven-yard TD run from Pig Howard. However, as Howard lunged toward the pylon, replays showed that he lost control of the ball just inches before it would’ve crossed the plane. Therefore, a review of the play accurately overruled the score and declared it a touchback since the ball bounced into the end zone and then out of bounds.

UT’s defense stuffed UGA to force a long field goal for the win. Morgan, who had made a 56-yarder in the first quarter before his 39-yard miss, buried a 42-yarder to complete UGA’s Great Escape from Rocky Top.

Tennessee took the cash as a 13 ½-point underdog after the line moved up from 10 ½ with heavy action on the Dawgs coming into the books on Saturday. Due to OT, the 65 combined points slipped ‘over’ the 64 ½-point total to improve to a perfect 5-0 in Georgia games this season.

But the victory was bittersweet for UGA. Marshall and Scott-Wesley are done for the year and Bennett could miss an extended period of time. Bennett is out for Saturday’s home game against Missouri and will have his knee scoped on Tuesday. Gurley remains ‘questionable’ for the Tigers.

Speaking of Gary Pinkel’s squad, it improved to 5-0 with a 51-28 win at Vanderbilt as a 2 ½-point road favorite. James Franklin threw four TD passes without an interception and accounted for 341 yards (278 passing, 63 rushing). Franklin has a 13/3 TD-INT ratio for the season and two rushing scores.

Florida upped its SEC record to 3-0 with a 30-10 win over Arkansas as a 13 ½-point home favorite. Tyler Murphy continued to exceed expectations with another solid performance. The fourth-year junior threw for 240 yards and three TDs without an interception. Since replacing Jeff Driskel, Murphy has completed 72.2 percent of his passes with a 5/1 TD-INT ratio and two rushing scores.

The Gators will bring their stout defense that’s giving up only 12.2 points per game into Baton Rouge this week to face LSU’s high-octane offense. The Tigers are favored by seven.

Unlike Georgia (at least for ATS purposes), LSU didn’t fall victim to the letdown situation. Les Miles’s bunch overcame a second-quarter deficit and poured it on Mississippi St. in the second half of a 59-26 win as a seven-point road ‘chalk.’

Zach Mettenberger threw for 340 yards and two TDs, Odell Beckham Jr. caught nine balls for 179 yards and two TDs and Jeremy Hill ran for 157 yards and two scores. Also, there was a Kenny Hilliard sighting in Starkville as the MVP of the 2011 SEC Championship Game finally got some touches and responded with three rushing TDs.

Auburn announced its presence as a possible SEC West contender with a 30-22 win over Ole Miss as a short home underdog. Even if AU doesn’t stay in the division mix, it has certainly done enough in its 4-1 start to be considered a potential spoiler. Remember, Gus Malzahn’s team faces Georgia and Alabama on The Plains in November.

South Carolina has crushed the pockets of its backers by allowing three consecutive backdoor covers in wins over Vandy, UCF and Kentucky. The Gamecocks beat UK 35-28 with Jadeveon Clowney sitting out due to bruised ribs. Steve Spurrier and defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward made it clear after the win over the ‘Cats that they weren’t happy with Clowney’s unwillingness to play.

Miami, FL. stayed undefeated and hooked up their backers in a 45-30 win over Ga. Tech as a 6 ½-point home favorite. The Hurricanes get an open date before playing at North Carolina next Thursday.

Florida State finally played a decent opponent and wasted no time in demolishing Maryland by a 63-0 count as a 16 ½-point home favorite. The Seminoles knocked Terrapins’ QB C.J. Brown out of the game with a concussion in the second quarter. Jameis Winston threw for 393 yards and five TDs without an interception to remain in Heisman contention.

The ‘Noles are 4-1 ATS and they’ve seen the ‘over’ cash at a 5-0 clip. They are off this week and therefore get two weeks to prepare for a showdown at Clemson on Oct. 19.

Clemson took care of business and got the money in a 49-14 win at Syracuse. Tajh Boyd, another Heisman hopeful, threw for 455 yards and five TDs.

Virginia Tech has quietly won five consecutive games following its 27-17 win over North Carolina as an eight-point favorite. Senior QB Logan Thomas had his best game of the year, throwing for 293 yards and three TDs without being picked off.

College football line watch: Patience for Kansas State backers

Each week during the college football season, renowned Las Vegas wiseguy and Covers Expert Bruce Marshall looks at the NCAAF odds and tells you which spread to bet now, which one to bet later, and which total to watch as the week plays out.

                  Spread to bet now

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (+10) at UNLV Rebels

Early in the week, we often like to identify the spreads that made an initial and pronounced move in one direction immediately after posting on late Sunday night. Especially a situation where we believe all of the “sharp” money has already been invested (which is not always the case in the earliest line moves) on one of the sides in the game. Such as UNLV, which was quickly bet up from 6.5 to 9.5 or 10 at most Nevada wagering outlets for Saturday’s game against visiting Hawaii at Sam Boyd Stadium.

There is some beneath-the-surface enthusiasm developing for Bobby Hauck’s Rebels after their recent three-game win streak, the longest at the school in a decade.

But the masses, even in hometown Las Vegas, are likely to remain skeptical for a bit longer about the Rebs, who have teased their followers before. And it’s worth noting that “local money” in Clark County includes tens of thousands of Rainbow Warrior backers who have caused the area to be labeled as the “ninth island” of the Aloha State.

The bottom line is that we expect no further serious money surges in the Rebels’ direction, and suspect that any appetite for UNLV in the marketplace was satisfied by that original dump of sharp money, which in some establishments has pushed the price up to a key number of 10.

Beyond the sharps who moved the early number, it is still hard to identify a lot of pro-Rebel sentiment among the masses.

Since we doubt the spread moves any higher, we suggest Hawaii backers do their shopping ASAP and grab that double-digit price wherever it is available.

Especially since we would not be surprised to see some downward pressure on this number later in the week.

                  Spread to wait on

Baylor Bears at Kansas State Wildcats (+17)

Projecting late-week money moves is always a bit tricky. Sometimes, however, the marketplace reacts exactly the opposite to the scenario outlined in our Hawaii-UNLV analysis above.

Those differences are usually when “public” teams are involved in the earliest money moves. Whereas only the sharps are likely to be in love with a team like UNLV, the masses can be counted on to support the higher-profile entries.

And if one team has indeed gone “public” in the first month of the 2013 season, it is Baylor.

And after a strong surge of initial money pushed the Bears up to 17 or 17.5 for Saturday’s game at Kansas State, we suspect the increasing public infatuation with Art Briles’ team creates more buy pressure on the Bears throughout the week.

                  Recent precedent suggests as much.

Consider last Saturday against visiting West Virginia, when the public kept buying and buying on Baylor all week, pushing the number from an initial 27.5 all of the way through a potential key number at 28 before settling at 30.5 (and in a few locales at 31) before kickoff. It is worth noting that Baylor was also bet up from -27 to -31 for its previous game vs. ULM.

Indeed, there has been no spread movement against the Bears yet this season.

Ironically, it was not long ago that K-State was such a “public” team, but the current version of Bill Snyder’s Wildcats have already lost three games and look to do no better than a minor bowl bid this season. And in this particular matchup, the masses might recall a dominating 52-24 Baylor win last season that effectively wrecked K-State’s hopes for the BCS title game.

Granted, this is the Bears’ first road game of the season, but the wagering public is a creature of habit. And since the public has been rewarded for continuing to back Baylor, and all but a few Bears tickets were cashed last Saturday, we suspect that pattern continues throughout the week.

The public can move prices as well, and we expect buy pressure on the Baylor Bears to push this number in the vicinity of three TDs.

At some point the sharps might jump back in and back the Wildcats (especially with possible “middle” scenarios), but K-State backers might as well wait until later in the week, especially since there is a chance that the Baylor infatuation pushes this spread up to the next key number.

                  Total to watch

Indiana Hoosiers at Michigan State Spartans (54.5)

We love these sorts of style clashes, and there can be no more pronounced on-field fundamental differences in this season’s Big Ten than those between Indiana and Michigan State.

Whereas the defense-minded Spartans are so conservative on the attack end that they might as well have Charles Krauthammer as offensive coordinator, Kevin Wilson’s Indiana offense is pure video football, utilizing an uptempo spread that looks more like it belongs in Conference USA than the Big Ten.

That sort of dichotomy presents some interesting possibilities in the total which has been initially posted at 54.5 for this game at East Lansing.

We suspect that the total movement will reflect which side the public is backing; a downward drift would likely suggest more Michigan State money, while a rise upward in the total would indicate an appetite in the marketplace for the Hoosiers.

Although there was immediate buy pressure for Michigan State that quickly moved the price to 9.5, totals often wait a bit longer to react.

And considering the fascinating style contrast between these sides, this figures to also be one of the most interesting totals developments of the week.

Beyond the BCS: Capping college football's small conferences

Some of the best betting value in college football is hiding beyond the BCS, in the small conferences. Each week, Covers Experts’ Doc’s Sports will look at the little programs that could help you make big cash this college season.

Team to watch: Ohio Bobcats (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS)

This week: -17 vs. Central Michigan

Ohio opened its season with a blowout loss to Louisville, but the schedule has softened and the floodgates have opened. The Bobcats are averaging 35.5 points in their last four games, including a 43-3 road rout of Akron in their Mid-American Conference opener. On the other side of the ball, they have allowed a grand total of three points in their last two contests.

Saturday’s opponent, Central Michigan, is 2-4 with a quartet of double-digit losses. The Chippewas are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 against teams with winning records and 1-11 ATS in their last 13 road games against teams with winning home records. Ohio is 4-0 ATS in its last four overall and 4-1 ATS in its last five at home.

Team to beware: Air Force Falcons (1-5 SU, 2-4 ATS)

This week: +4 vs. San Diego State

The government shutdown didn’t stop last weekend’s game between Air Force and Navy, but the Falcons’ season can’t be shut down soon enough. They have lost five in a row to drop to 1-5, with four of their five setbacks coming by at least 18 points. Air Force is 2-9 ATS in its last 11 overall, 0-5 ATS in its last five home games, and 0-5 ATS in its last five against teams with losing records. They are 0-4 ATS in their last five against San Diego State.

As for the Aztecs, they handled Air Force 28-9 last season and have returned 16 starters. They average 145.5 yards per game on the ground in 2013 and are going up against a Falcons defense that gives up 222.5 rushing yards per outing. SDSU freshman Donnel Pumphrey is averaging 7.5 yards on 44 carries.

Total team: San Jose State Spartans (2-3 SU, 2-3 O/U)

This week: 58 at Colorado State

Since shutting out Sacramento State in its season opener, San Jose State has allowed at least 27 points in four straight contests, including 40 or more in two of its three losses. The Spartans are still without a slew of defensive players, including impact performers like safety Brandon Monroe, cornerback Bene Benwikere, and linebacker Derek Muaava. On the bright side, SJSU’s passing offense is churning out 306.8 yards per game behind senior quarterback David Fales.

The Over is 6-1 in the Spartans’ last seven road games, 5-1 in their last seven against Mountain West opposition, and 4-0 in their last four following a bye week. Colorado State also had an off week to prepare for this one. The Over is 7-2 in the Rams’ last nine following a bye week and 7-2 in their last nine against teams with losing records.
