  • Total Talk - Week 4

    September 29, 2013

    Week 3 Recap

The ‘under’ produced a 9-7 record in Week 3. Through three weeks of action, the ‘under’ is 25-23. The Bears, Broncos, Vikings and Packers have all seen the ‘over’ go 3-0 while the Buccaneers, Chiefs, Saints and Patriots have watched the ‘under’ go 3-0 in their first three games.

    Line Moves

If part of your handicapping is following line moves, then this section has certainly helped your profits this NFL season or at least we hope so. Through two weeks, we’ve listed 13 games that had their total move 1 ½ points or more at CRIS, either up or down. If you followed the move, regardless of the jump or drop, you would’ve gone 11-2 (85%) this season.

I’m not telling you to run to the counter and unload this Sunday, just informing you of where the early bettors believe the oddsmakers made mistakes. In Week 4, we have five games that have been adjusted as of Sunday morning.

Pittsburgh vs. Minnesota (from London): Line opened 39 and jumped to 41
Seattle at Houston: Line opened 45 and dropped to 41 ½
New York Giants at Kansas City: Line opened 45 ½ and dropped to 44
Dallas at San Diego: Line opened 44 ½ and jumped to 46 ½
Philadelphia at Denver: Line opened 55 and jumped to 57 ½

    Sixty-Something?

Totals in the fifties isn’t unusual these days in the pass-happy NFL and it makes you wonder if we’ll ever see a number in the sixties, especially the way Denver has been playing this season. In case you’re wondering, the highest ‘over/under’ in NFL history occurred in 2000 when the St. Louis Rams otherwise known as the “Greatest Show on Turf” met San Francisco on the road. That total was 62 and it fell ‘under’ as the Rams beat the 49ers 34-24. St. Louis played 17 games 2000 and only four were listed below 50 points.

Denver and quarterback Peyton Manning are on pace to shatter offensive records this season and the books have taken notice. This week, the Broncos are looking at a total of 57 ½ when Philadelphia visits Sports Authority Field. When you look at the lack of productivity from the Eagles defense this season, it’s hard to argue that the Broncos will be slowed down, especially at home. Make a note that the Broncos had two totals in the fifties (50, 55) last season and the betting results went 1-1 in those games, barely. Only a combined 52 and 48 points were posted in those two contests.

    Lookin' at London

The NFL International Series returns this week for the first of two games to be played at Wembley Stadium from London. The first go ‘round will feature a pair of winless squads in Pittsburgh and Minnesota going head-to-head. The second meeting from London takes place in four weeks when San Francisco and Jacksonville meet from London.

This will be the seventh installment from England and if the trends stay true, we could be looking at another low-scoring affair. In the first six matchups the ‘under’ has gone 4-2 and in the two instances we did see some points posted, it came with a pair of offensive juggernauts playing in the Saints (2008) and Patriots (2012). Most would agree that the Steelers and Vikings aren’t as explosive. Make a note that Minnesota is starting a backup at QB in Matt Cassel, which might be a good thing for the Vikings.

    2007 - New York Giants 13 Miami 10 (Under 48)
    2008 - New Orleans 37 San Diego 32 (Over 45.5)
    2009 - New England 35 Tampa Bay 7 (Under 45)
    2010 - San Francisco 24 Denver 16 (Under 41.5)
    2011 - Chicago 24 Tampa Bay 18 (Under 44)
    2012 – New England 45 St. Louis 7 (Over 46)

    Divisional Trends

The ‘over’ has gone 9-6 in divisional matchups this season, which includes Thursday’s lucky ‘over’ ticket between the 49ers and Rams. Three more on tap for Sunday.

Cincinnati at Cleveland: The ‘over’ is on a 4-0 run in this series, which included a pair of shootouts last season that saw a combined 58 and 61 points posted.

Indianapolis at Jacksonville: The ‘under’ has cashed in four consecutive games between this pair. The totals have ranged from 36 ½ points to 43 during this span. This week’s number is hovering between 41 and 42.

Chicago at Detroit: For the past three years, the Bears and Lions have seen the ‘over/under’ go 1-1 in their regular season matchups. If that trend stays true in 2013, the best angle might be to pass on Sunday and then play the opposite when they meet again on Nov. 10 from Soldier Field.

    Under the Lights

Including this past Thursday’s matchup between St. Louis and San Francisco, the ‘over’ has cashed in three consecutive primetime games. On the season, the ‘over’ is now 7-4 in the national spotlight. This week, we have two high numbers posted and a lot of it has to do with reputation.

New England at Atlanta: On paper this matchup presents two quality quarterbacks that can light up the scoreboard any given week but neither is executing at a high level right now. The Falcons are banged up on both sides of the football and the Patriots aren’t clicking with all the new faces. Tom Brady is 3-0 in his career versus Atlanta, posting 24, 31 and 26 points. New England will still be without TE Rob Gronkowski (forearm) and Danny Amendola (groin) on Sunday. Atlanta won’t have RB Steven Jackson (thigh) but WR Roddy White (ankle) is expected to go.

Miami at New Orleans: After three weeks, the biggest surprise of the season could be the perfect 3-0 ‘under’ record of the Saints. Miami has been better offensively behind second-year QB Ryan Tannehill this season but he still doesn’t have any pocket awareness (15 sacks). Drew Brees and the Saints have put up five scores in each of their two home games. Last Sunday, they had 31 (4 TDs, 1 FG) against the Cardinals and in Week 1 they put up 21 (3 FGs, 2 TDs) versus the Falcons. I’d expect New Orleans to get at least five scores again in the Superdome especially with injuries to the Miami front seven.

    Fearless Predictions

For the second consecutive week, we split and lost another 20 cents ($20). On the season, we’re down $40 despite going 3-1 (75%) in our Best Bets. Team totals haven’t been a sound investment (0-2) so far but it’s a new week. As always, Press, Pass or Fade but in the end – Good Luck!

    Best Over: Dallas-San Diego 46 ½

    Best Under: Seattle-Houston 41 ½

Best Team Total: Over Washington 23 ½

    Three-Team Total Teaser:
    Under 50 Pittsburgh-Minnesota
    Under 50 ½ Seattle-Houston
    Over 37 ½ Dallas-San Diego

      • Seahawks at Texans: What bettors need to know

Seattle Seahawks at Houston Texans (+1, 41.5)

The Seattle Seahawks have never started a season with four straight victories and the host Houston Texans are striving to make sure that remains the case in Sunday’s showdown. Seattle is riding a top-notch defense that leads the NFL in scoring defense (9.0) and total defense (241.7 yards) and also has forced 10 turnovers. Houston ranks second in total defense (249.0) but isn’t anywhere near as stingy in preventing points, allowing 27.3 per contest.

The Texans are in a three-way tie for first place in the AFC South while the Seahawks have a two-game lead in the NFC West. Houston star receiver Andre Johnson (25 receptions) is a game-time decision after suffering a bruised shin in last week’s 30-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is mightily concerned with reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt, who has three sacks this season after racking up 20.5 in 2012. “He’s a fantastic player,” Carroll said of the Houston star during a press conference. “He just causes so many problems. He plays with incredible effort and intensity so we really have to pay attention."

        TV: 1 p.m. ET, FOX.

LINE: The Texans opened +3 and are currently +1. The total opened at 44 but has come down to 41.5.

        WEATHER: N/A

ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS (3-0): Quarterback Russell Wilson tied his career high with four touchdown passes in a romp over Jacksonville and has six overall while completing 64.4 percent of his passes. Receiver Sidney Rice and tight end Zach Miller each caught two TD passes against the Jaguars while wideout Golden Tate leads the way with a modest 10 receptions. The defense has forced five fumbles and accumulated five interceptions - two by safety Kam Chancellor - while cornerback Richard Sherman (one interception) continues to shut down receivers on his side of the field. Defensive end Michael Bennett has 2.5 of Seattle’s seven sacks.

ABOUT THE TEXANS (2-1): Houston’s 21-point loss to Baltimore included a franchise-record 14 penalties, zero offensive touchdowns scored and allowing the Ravens to record one defensive and one punt-return touchdown. Quarterback Matt Schaub has thrown for 838 yards and six touchdowns but running back Arian Foster (190 yards, one score) has yet to hit his stride. If Johnson can’t play, impressive first-round pick DeAndre Hopkins will receive a larger role with a chance to increase his rookie-best numbers of 18 receptions and 243 yards. While Watt has again been sensational, inside linebacker Brian Cushing (team-best 24 tackles, one interception) is playing well after having his 2012 campaign cut short by a knee injury.

        TRENDS:

        * Seahawks are 5-0 ATS in their last five road games.
        * Texans are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.
        * Over is 5-2 in Seahawks last seven road games.
        * Over is 4-1 in Texans last five games in September.

        EXTRA POINTS:

        1. The teams have split two previous meetings with Houston winning the most recent one – 34-7 in 2009 when Schaub passed for 365 yards and Johnson had 11 receptions for 193 yards and two touchdowns.

        2. Seahawks DE Red Bryant (back spasms) is expected to be available.

        3. The Texans are 17-6 when Foster rushes for 100 or more yards.

                • BIG WINNA WITH THE SAN DIEGO CHARGERS AS MY GAME OF THE MONTH PICK.....THAT'S 2 - 0 THIS WEEKEND FOR MY BIG PLAYS,....

Now for the sunday night winner......

                  New England at Atlanta

                  September 29, 2013

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (3-0 SU, 1-2 ATS) at ATLANTA FALCONS (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS)

                  Sportsbook.ag Line & Total: Atlanta -2.5 & 50.5
Opening Line & Total: Pick 'em & 49.5

The Falcons look to get back to .500 while the Patriots try to stay undefeated when the two teams square off at Georgia Dome on Sunday night.

The last time New England and Atlanta played was in September of 2009 where the Patriots held a 445 to 257 yards advantage and prevailed 26-10. New England was a four-point underdog in that game and was able to win-and-cover for the third straight time against Atlanta. The Falcons have allowed 296 passing YPG this season (25th in NFL), which doesn't bode well against a Tom Brady-led offense that could have TE Rob Gronkowski (back) for the first time this season. However, Atlanta also has a potent air attack (289 passing YPG, 7th in NFL) and will provide the first real test for New England's suspect secondary, which has faced three of the league's worst starting quarterbacks (Josh Freeman, Geno Smith and EJ Manuel).

The Patriots are 39-16 against the spread (71%) as an underdog under head coach Bill Belichick, but the Falcons are is 8-1 ATS in September home games under head coach Mike Smith. Although New England is 14-4 ATS (78%) coming off of a Belichick-coached game where his team allowed six points or less, Atlanta is 19-5 ATS (79%) after a loss under Smith.

The Patriots are 3-0 SU to start the season, but their offense hasn't played well at all, gaining just 4.5 yards per play (3rd-fewest in NFL) and scoring only 19.7 PPG (22nd in league). New England is coming off a 23-3 victory over the Buccaneers in which Tom Brady's receivers finally provided him with some competent play. Aaron Dobson had seven catches in the game for 52 yards while Kenbrell Thompkins was the recipient of two red-zone touchdown passes. WR Julian Edelman also chipped in with seven receptions for 44 yards, as he's tied for the NFL lead with 27 catches this year. Brady was 25-of-36 for 225 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT in the game, marking his 51st straight game with at least one touchdown pass. Many of those touchdown passes during his streak have gone to TE Rob Gronkowski who has an incredible 39 TD catches in 43 career games.

The Patriots rushing offense really sputtered in Week 2 versus the Jets (24 carries for 54 yards), but chewed up 156 rushing yards as a team versus the Bucs, led by LeGarrette Blount's 65 yards on 14 carries and Brandon Bolden's 51 yards on just three rushing attempts in his season debut.

One the defensive end, New England was near perfect, allowing just 323 yards of total offense against a weak Buccaneers team. For the season, the Patriots have allowed just 11.3 PPG (T-2nd in NFL) and 309 total YPG (T-8th in league), while forcing an impressive seven turnovers. With the offense beginning to get healthier and the Patriots still undefeated, it's interesting to see just how good this team will be in a couple of weeks when Gronkowski and top WR Danny Amendola (groin) return healthy.

Atlanta's defense has really struggled this season, allowing 24.7 PPG (T-19th in NFL) and 375 total YPG (23rd in league). They defense hasn't been able to get stops when it has needed to, both on third down (48% conversion rate, 5th-worst in NFL) and in the red zone (70% efficiency, T-23rd in league).

Without RB Steven Jackson, who is out for a month with a thigh injury, the Falcons' backfield duo of RBs Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling was very productive last week, combining for 139 yards on 29 carries (4.8 YPC). Snelling also caught four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.

QB Matt Ryan went 23-of-38 for 231 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the game. WR Julio Jones continues to give opposing defenses nightmares as he caught nine passes for 115 yards. He now has a league-high-tying 27 receptions for an NFL-best 373 yards and two touchdowns on the year. Jones also leads the league with 194 yards after catch, which has been key because fellow WR Roddy White is still dealing with a high-ankle sprain that has really limited his usually stellar production. TE Tony Gonzalez is also off to a slow start with just 11 catches for 93 yards and one touchdown, a big drop-off from his 2012 season when he caught 93 passes for 930 yards and eight scores.

                      • Where the action is: Bettors backing Falcons at home

Sunday Night Football has Tom Brady and the New England Patriots heading south to face the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome.

We talk to sportsbooks about the action coming in on the Sunday Night Football matchup and where oddsmakers see the line closing come kickoff:

New England Patriots at Atlanta Falcons (-3, 48.5)

The line opened Atlanta -1 and early action moved that number to -1.5 earlier in the week.

Books adjusted figures based on the status of Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski after there were rumblings that he'd make his debut on the Sunday night stage.

When news hit that Gronk was going to miss the game, the line moved to Falcons -2.5 and money kept coming in on Atlanta at that number.

According to Peter Childs of Sportsbook.ag, 70 percent of the action is coming in on the Falcons who find themselves in a must win situation or could wind up a couple of games behind the NFC South leading Saints.

"After going to 2.5, we kept seeing money come in on the Falcons, forcing us to go Falcons -2.5 (-115), to -2.5 (-120) and late Saturday evening going to Falcons -3 flat," Childs told Covers.

Childs believes that at that number, there should be some nice two-way action.

"We believe by going to Falcons -3, we’ll be able to write some very good, two-way action in what will be the most bet on game of the week."

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday..........

                              13) Vikings 34, Steelers 27-- Pitt is 0-4 for first time since 1968, when they went 2-11-1 and fired Bill Austin, replacing him with Chuck Noll. They have had only three head coaches since that season. Why did the spread go up after it was announced Cassel was playing? He's as good as Ponder.

                              12) Bills 23, Ravens 20-- Buffalo outrushed defending champs 203-24, had five INTs (+2 turnover ratio), held Ravens to 3-16 on third down. Each side had ball 16 times in this game, an awful lot for an NFL game-- 10 of Ravens' 16 drives started 80+ yards from the end zone.

                              11) Browns 17, Bengals 6-- Cleveland is 2-0 with Hoyer at QB, they held the Bengals to 63 rushing yards, one field goal on two red zone drives. Three of the four AFC North teams are tied for first place at 2-2, and Steelers aren't one of those three.

                              10) Colts 37, Jaguars 3-- Would the Jaguars win the CFL title? Three TDs on 48 drives is no way to start a season. Jax hasn't come within 10 points in any game yet this season, outscored 129-31. Luckily for me they play the Rams next week and then they go to Denver, where the spread is expected to be as high as 28 points, maybe the highest spread in NFL history.

                              9) Seahawks 23, Texans 20-- Major choke job by Houston, which led 20-3 at half, had ball in Seattle territory up 20-13 with 3:00, to play, then threw a pick-6 to tie game, and they lost in OT. QBs can't throw balls like that.

Remember now, Lane Kiffin got fired this weekend, but lot of the stuff that has USC's program in decline happened under Pete Carroll's watch, before he beat feet a few steps ahead of the NCAA calling.

                              8) Cardinals 13, Bucs 10-- Both teams had three turnovers, neither team gained 300 yards, Larry Fitzgerald didn't catch a ball in the first half, but the Redbirds won despite 10 penalties for 90 yards and going 1-10 on 3rd down; Mike Glennon's debut at QB didn't help Greg Schiano's job security any.

Doug Martin had 27 rushes for 45 yards; it is painful just to type that.

                              7) Lions 40, Bears 32-- Only second Detroit win in last 11 series games; its four TDs came on drives of 22-2-51 yards, plus the defense scored one. Two teams combine to convert 3-23 on third down and turn ball over seven times. Lions forced seven 3/outs, won field position battle by 18 yards.

                              6) Chiefs 31, Giants 7-- In last five halves, Giants were outscored 100-21. In its 4-0 start, Chiefs won field position by 15-14-23-12 yards; this just doesn't happen much in the NFL. Turnovers were even here, which makes final result little more telling, since Giants were -9, Chiefs +9 in first three games.

                              5) Titans 38, Jets 13-- Tennessee lost QB Locker with hip injury, won this game by forcing four turnovers (+4)- their first three TD drives were 18-26-46 yards, then defense scored one, too. Rough day on road for rookie QB, as Jets had six 3/outs, 10 penalties, were 4-13 on third down.

                              4) Chargers 30, Cowboys 21-- Dallas led 21-13 at half, but rough weekend for Kiffin family (USC-Ole Miss-Dallas all lost) ended with Cowboys getting blanked in second half. Rivers was 35-42/392 passing, averaging 9.2 yards per attempt. NFC East is a combined 4-12 SU.

                              3) Redskins 24, Raiders 14-- Oakland led 14-0 early thanks to blocked punt for a TD, but Skins scored a defensive TD and sacked Flynn seven times as Raider fans asked, "Why did we trade for this guy?" Hopefully RGIII's knee will get better; right now, he looks like a shell of what he was last year.

Raiders are down 10 with 3:30 to go, have 4th-and-1 at the Washington 17-- how do they not kick a FG there to get within seven points? Do coaches go to game management class after they get hired? If not, they should.

                              2) Broncos 52, Eagles 20-- If Chip Kelly called USC today, how fast do you think he could get out of his Philly contract? Since halftime of Week 1, Iggles have been outscored 131-73. Steve Mariucci said on NFL Network that he wouldn't be that surprised if Denver went undefeated this season.

                              1) Patriots 30, Falcons 23-- AFC East teams are now 8-1 vs spread outside their division. BC alum Ryan wasn't as sharp as normal; Smith drops to 19-5 vs spread in games following a loss. Atlanta is now 1.5 games behind Saints in NFC South- they seem to do just enough to lose.

Monday Night Football betting: Dolphins at Saints
                                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Dolphins at New Orleans Saints (-7, 48.5)

Ryan Tannehill of the Miami Dolphins is used to flying under the radar as part of the much-ballyhooed NFL quarterback class of 2012. That will certainly be the case for the second-year signal caller on Monday night when he brings his unbeaten team into New Orleans for a prime-time showdown with Drew Brees and the undefeated Saints. Miami is seeking its first 4-0 start since 1995 and will try to knock off an NFC South power for the second straight week.

The return of head coach Sean Payton from a one-year suspension due to the Bountygate scandal has the Saints back on track after an 0-4 start torpedoed their 2012 season. Brees has surpassed 300 yards in each of the first three games, but the biggest change for New Orleans has come on the other side of the ball. The Saints allowed an NFL-worst 440.1 yards per game and ranked 31st in points allowed (28.4) last season, but they are yielding only 12.7 points so far.

                                TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: The Saints opened -5.5 and have moved to -7. The total opened at 47 and is now 48.5

                                WEATHER: N/A

ABOUT THE DOLPHINS (3-0): Miami opened some eyes by winning at Indianapolis in Week 2 and made a loud statement last week by erasing a 10-point second-half deficit to knock off Atlanta, which is expected to battle the Saints for the NFC South title. Tannehill threw the winning TD with 38 seconds left and is completing 66.4 percent of his passes despite getting sacked a league-high 14 times. The Dolphins are still searching for consistency from high-priced free-agent wideout Mike Wallace and running back Lamar Miller, but the defense ranks eighth in the league with an average of 17.7 points allowed.

ABOUT THE SAINTS (3-0): Brees has thrown for more than 1,000 yards and had three touchdown passes in last week's 31-7 rout of Arizona, but he has also been picked off four times. Part of that is due to a punchless running game that is producing only 85.7 yards, but tight end Jimmy Graham has four TD catches and is coming off back-to-back monster games after battling an ankle injury through much of last season. The Saints' best move of the offseason was bringing in defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who implemented a 3-4 scheme that has New Orleans yielding 295.7 yard per game - fourth in the league.

                                TRENDS:

                                * Dolphins are 1-4 ATS in their last five Monday games.
                                * Saints are 4-0 ATS in their last four Monday games.
                                * Under is 17-4 in Dolphins last 21 games on fieldturf.
                                * Over is 7-3 in Saints last 10 Monday games.

                                EXTRA POINTS:

                                1. Brees has won eight straight Monday Night Football games, throwing for 24 TDs against five interceptions.

                                2. Miami is expected to be without DE Cameron Wake (knee), who had 15 sacks last season but was injured in last week's game.

                                3. Saints WR Marques Colston has nine TD receptions in his last eight home games.
