  • Preview: Angels (67-75) at Twins (61-80)
    Game: 1
    Venue: Target Field
    Date: September 09, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

Following a rare setback during their outstanding run, the Los Angeles Angels appear to be in a good position to bounce back with Jered Weaver facing a team he's dominated recently.

Those Minnesota Twins are simply trying to avoid the longest home losing streak in franchise history.

Weaver looks to win his fifth straight decision against the struggling Twins on Monday night when visiting Los Angeles goes for its 13th win in 17 games.

Although the Angels (67-75) are way out of contention as they wrap up a very disappointing season, solid pitching and timely hitting has keyed this late hot stretch.

"They're playing hard," manager Mike Scioscia told the league's official website. "It's been fun to watch these guys rebound from the depths of what's been a very frustrating season."

They've batted .333 with runners in scoring position during the 12-4 stretch despite going 2 for 10 in a 4-3 loss to Texas on Sunday. Kole Calhoun, who went 2 for 4 with a home run in the defeat, is 8 for 12 with 10 RBIs with runners in scoring position over that span.

"He's a strong little guy," Scioscia said. "What his numbers will end up being, that's just going to be a function of him just continuing to put good swings on the ball.'

Los Angeles' pitchers have a 2.71 ERA over the last 16 games and Weaver (9-8, 3.33 ERA) has been instrumental to that success.

The right-hander has limited opponents to a .158 batting average while posting a 1.71 ERA in his last three starts. He surrendered three runs over seven innings in a tough-luck 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Wednesday.

Weaver hasn't lost to the Twins (61-80) since Aug. 22, 2010. He's 4-0 with a 2.51 ERA in six starts since, including a no-hitter May 2, 2012, at Anaheim. Weaver has allowed one run and five hits over 23 innings while winning three straight starts against them.

This time, he faces a Minnesota team that has dropped 10 straight home games for the first time since Sept. 15-29, 1957, when the franchise was the Washington Senators.

The Twins, who have averaged 2.0 runs during the skid, haven't lost 11 in a row at home in franchise history.

"That's terrible, to be honest with you,' infielder Brian Dozier said. "We're not playing very good. Offense, defense, anything.'

Minnesota, however, has had success at Target Field against the Angels, winning five of the last seven meetings dating back to last season.

The Twins will also try to avoid their fifth straight loss overall behind left-hander Pedro Hernandez (3-1, 5.19), who makes his second start since getting recalled from the minors Aug. 30.

He fared well against light-hitting Houston on Tuesday, giving up two runs and six hits over six-plus innings in a 9-6, 12-inning road win.

Hernandez will have to contend with Mike Trout, who is 15 for 33 during a 10-game hitting streak. He's also 8 for 16 with four doubles and five RBIs in four career games at Target Field.

    • Preview: Braves (85-57) at Marlins (53-88)
      Game: 1
      Venue: Marlins Park
      Date: September 09, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

Kris Medlen has won a lot of games of late.

The right-hander will look to help the Atlanta Braves snap a four-game losing streak Monday when they pay a visit to the Miami Marlins.

The Braves (85-57) have scored 10 runs and are batting .156 over their skid. The top four hitters in Atlanta's order - B.J. Upton, Andrelton Simmons, Freddie Freeman and Chris Johnson - went a combined 0 for 15 with five strikeouts in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Philadelphia.

Upton is 0 for his last 14 with eight strikeouts.

"They pitched well all three games," Upton said. "We're fine. We'll come back to play tomorrow."

Evan Gattis had the Braves' only two hits off Cole Hamels - both home runs - and very nearly added a third.

"He's strong," Hamels said. "He swung with everything he had in him. I felt like I was throwing a golf ball out there and he had a driver."

Gattis is batting .450 (9 for 20) with three doubles and two home runs against the Marlins.

Medlen (12-12, 3.48 ERA) has gone 6-1 with a 2.74 ERA in his last seven starts, and he's allowed one run over his last 14 innings while winning his last two.

He limited the New York Mets to one run in seven innings of a 3-1 victory Tuesday, holding them to 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

"Whatever jam you get in, you always feel like you can get out of it," Medlen said. "I'm always thinking positive. Whether other people do, I don't know, but I'm always figuring out a way to get out of stuff. It's something you learn as you mature in this game."

Medlen, long one of the game's better control pitchers, has not issued a walk in his last two outings.

Medlen has won both his starts against the Marlins this year, allowing an unearned run in seven innings of a 3-2 victory April 9 and three runs in six innings of an 11-3 win July 2. He's gone 4-0 with a 1.91 ERA in his last five starts against the Marlins.

Medlen's success has been part of Atlanta's dominance on the road in this series, with the Braves winning five of six away matchups this year and 19 of the past 24. Atlanta has posted a 1.86 ERA in 15 games at Marlins Park.

Henderson Alvarez (3-3, 3.95) has had six days to rest a tight right hamstring that forced him from his September 2 start against the Chicago Cubs after 79 pitches. The right-hander has fared well this season with the extra rest, recording a 2.25 ERA in two starts on six days' rest.

After allowing four straight singles to lead off a three-run first inning, Alvarez scattered three hits over five scoreless innings in a 4-3 win over the Cubs and helped his cause with a three-run homer.

"I started the first inning leaving pitches up a little bit, but then I made an adjustment in the second inning," said Alvarez, 7 for 19 this season with two doubles in addition to his homer.

The Marlins (53-88) dropped the final two games of their three-game set with Washington, losing 6-4 on Sunday. They allowed 15 runs in those two defeats and have lost 11 of 15 at home.

"We know we have to pitch and play almost perfect to win and we weren't able to do that," manager Mike Redmond said.

They may be without Giancarlo Stanton, who missed Sunday's game with a foot injury.

"It felt the same as it did yesterday," Stanton said.

      • Preview: Nationals (73-69) at Mets (64-77)
        Game: 1
        Venue: Citi Field
        Date: September 09, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

The Washington Nationals know time is running out to make a late run to the wild card.

They'll try to win their third straight game and fifth in six overall Monday when they visit the New York Mets.

The reigning NL East champ, Washington (73-69) gave itself a chance late last month, winning eight of nine before the Mets (64-77) took two of three in the nation's capital. The Nationals won the last two games of their three-game set with Miami, capped with Sunday's 6-4 victory as Denard Span extended his hitting streak to 19 games - the longest active streak in the majors.

"I liked the way our lineup's swinging the bat," manager Davey Johnson told the team's official website. "We just need to continue. We can't afford to have any lapses. We've got to win them all."

Gio Gonzalez (9-6, 3.49 ERA) will try to keep Washington's momentum going against one of his favorite foes as he tries to win a third straight start. He overcame three errors Wednesday against Philadelphia, giving up five runs - one earned - in 5 2-3 innings of a 9-6 victory.

"I was a little uncomfortable the whole game," Gonzalez said. "They were being patient and I wasn't pounding the strike zone. A win doesn't have to be pretty, but just a win.'

He was just the opposite versus the Mets on June 30, scattering three hits and two walks in seven shutout innings of a 13-2 rout for his fourth straight win over them. Gonzalez did not get a decision against New York on April 20, allowing five runs and five hits with four walks in four innings of a 7-6 victory.

Gonzalez, who has walked three-plus batters in four straight starts after only doing so once in his prior 10, has gotten 24 runs over his last three starts after receiving nine over his prior six.

Carlos Torres (3-3, 2.89 ERA) has been solid in all but one of his five starts for the Mets, getting tagged for eight runs and nine hits in three innings of a 14-1 loss at Washington on July 28. He has yielded only six runs in 24 2-3 innings in his other four starts.

The right-hander had one bad inning cost him Tuesday at Atlanta, where he gave up seventh-inning homers to Evan Gattis and Andrelton Simmons in a 3-1 defeat.

"That's baseball," Torres said. "Unfortunately, baseball usually comes down to one or two pitches, one or two at_bats, and that's the way it goes."

Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos, who hit a grand slam off Torres in that July victory, is hitting .442 in 24 games lifetime versus the Mets. He went 3 for 5 with a solo homer Sunday. Jayson Werth has gone 13 for 28 in Washington's eight wins over New York but only 3 for 26 with 10 strikeouts in the seven losses.

Eric Young went 2 for 4 and had a go-ahead RBI double in the ninth Sunday to lift New York to a 2-1 victory over Cleveland. He is 15 for 40 (.375) with nine runs scored in his last 10 games.

        • Preview: Cubs (60-82) at Reds (82-62)
          Game: 1
          Venue: Great American Ball Park
          Date: September 09, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

While the Cincinnati Reds sit comfortably atop the NL wild-card standings, they have their sights set on winning the Central.

Facing the division's last-place team isn't likely to hurt their cause.

The surging Reds try to continue their recent domination of the Chicago Cubs in Monday night's series opener at Great American Ball Park.

Cincinnati (82-62) enters this three-game set seeking a fifth consecutive victory after sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend. Jay Bruce hit two solo homers and Ryan Hanigan drove in Zack Cozart with a walkoff double in Sunday's 3-2 victory, moving the Reds into a virtual second-place tie in the division.

Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are 1 1/2 games behind first-place St. Louis.

"Man, guys are excited in there and they should be," said manager Dusty Baker, whose team is eight games ahead of third-place Washington in the wild-card race. "We've just got to keep going. We're in second place now, hopefully headed toward first."

Cincinnati would appear to have a good chance to do just that against the Cubs (60-82). The Reds have averaged 5.2 runs and hit 27 homers in taking 22 of 26 from Chicago, which is an NL-worst 12-27 since July 29.

"You never want to be a spoiler, and not that there's really any spoiling going on," Cubs manager Dale Sveum told MLB's official website. "You're getting in that playoff-type atmosphere when you're trying to win a division. ... It's good for everybody to see that and play in those atmospheres. It's different."

Chicago is hoping to avoid a third straight loss after falling 3-1 to Milwaukee on Sunday. Rookie Junior Lake went 2 for 3 with his sixth homer, but the rest of the team was 1 for 27.

The Cubs could be in for another long day at the plate against Reds starter Bronson Arroyo (13-10, 3.62 ERA). The right-hander, who has won four consecutive starts in the series, is 9-3 with a 2.75 ERA in his last 15 outings versus Chicago.

Arroyo has also shined at home, going 9-3 with a 3.16 ERA. He recorded his 15th quality start in 17 outings there Wednesday, allowing three runs over seven innings in a 5-4, 16-inning loss to St. Louis.

Arroyo will be opposed by Travis Wood (8-11, 3.17), who is 2-5 with a 3.99 ERA in nine starts since representing Chicago in the All-Star game. The left-hander surrendered four runs and nine hits in seven innings last Monday in a 4-3 loss to Miami.

Wood, who spent the first two seasons of his career with Cincinnati, is still trying to beat his former team. He allowed two runs over a season-high eight innings in a hard-luck 2-0 loss Aug. 12, dropping to 0-4 with a 4.15 ERA in six starts against the Reds.

Cozart is 1 for 16 in their matchups, and Shin-Soo Choo and Joey Votto are both 1 for 10. Bruce and Todd Frazier, though, are a combined 10 for 28 with four homers.

Cozart is batting .373 during a career-best 13-game hitting streak.

The Cubs will also need to be wary of speedster Billy Hamilton, who has wreaked havoc on the basepaths since getting called up last Monday. Hamilton, still seeking his first at-bat, has stolen four bases in as many tries and scored three runs as a pinch runner.

"The more you try to stop it, the more bad pitches you throw," Sveum said. "You don't really stop that kind of speed, otherwise people would've stopped it."

          • Preview: Pirates (81-61) at Rangers (81-61)
            Game: 1
            Venue: Rangers Ballpark in Arlington
            Date: September 09, 2013 8:05 PM EDT

Manager Clint Hurdle is excited to bring his Pittsburgh Pirates to the place where he was previously employed, but he knows they'll have to play much better than they did over the weekend.

The Pirates have lost four straight and are 0-6 all-time in Arlington heading into Monday night's opener of a three-game set against a Texas Rangers team that has lost four straight starts by major league strikeout leader Yu Darvish.

Hurdle spent 2010 as the Rangers' batting coach, helping the franchise reach its first World Series before he was hired to manage Pittsburgh (81-61) the next season.

"I'm absolutely looking forward to it," Hurdle told the Pirates' official website. "I made a lot of friends. The makeup of the club has changed quite a bit - but there are still some stalwarts there."

The Pirates will be trying to regroup after being outscored 26-10 in three games in St. Louis - falling out of first place in the NL Central and hampering their chances for home-field advantage in a possible wild-card game against Cincinnati.

"We weren't sharp in any particular area of the game all weekend,' Hurdle said. "They were much sharper than us across the board. It's very difficult to win a game when you are not functioning."

Pittsburgh is 1 1/2 games out of first place - the same margin Texas (81-61) trails Oakland in the AL West. The Rangers are 10-2 in the all-time series, winning every home matchup, but the Pirates come to town with the NL's best interleague mark at 12-5.

"They're pretty much in the same situation as we are," Hurdle said. "I have a lot of respect for what they've done, but we also respect what we've done."

The Pirates will get their first look at Darvish (12-7, 2.91 ERA), who is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in his last four outings. He gave up five runs over five-plus innings and matched a career high with a season-worst six walks in an 11-4 defeat Wednesday at Oakland.

The right-hander is 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA in five career interleague starts. Darvish, whose 240 strikeouts are the franchise's second-most to Nolan Ryan's 301 in 1989, is trying to avoid losing three straight starts for the first time.

The Pittsburgh hitter with the most experience against him is former Minnesota slugger Justin Morneau, who is 1 for 5 with a homer versus him and will return to Arlington - where he played his last game with the Twins on Aug. 30.

Darvish will need to provide length after the bullpen worked 5 2-3 innings in relief of Nick Tepesch in Sunday's 4-3 victory over the Angels. The Rangers rallied with two runs in the seventh inning for their second win in seven games.

"It was a very big win. We needed it bad,' manager Ron Washington said. "They took the lead, but we didn't give in. We just kept fighting and were able to make some good things happen. It's only one win, but it was huge."

Pittsburgh rookie starter Gerrit Cole (6-7, 3.74) is 0-2 with a 3.26 ERA in his last three outings. The right-hander gave up two runs over six innings Tuesday in a 4-3 win at Milwaukee - the last victory for Pittsburgh.

            • Preview: Tigers (82-61) at White Sox (57-85)
              Game: 1
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
              Date: September 09, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

While Max Scherzer takes another attempt at his 20th win, the Detroit Tigers aren't likely to have a breakout performance offensively with Chris Sale on the mound.

Scherzer again looks to become the first pitcher to reach the 20-win mark while dealing the White Sox their 10th loss in 11 games Monday night when a pair of All-Star pitchers face off in Chicago.

Aside from a 16-run outburst at Kansas City on Friday, the Tigers (82-61) have totaled 13 runs while dropping five of seven in September. They managed just six hits in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Royals, but still lead the AL Central by 5 1/2 games.

Detroit, though, may not need a whole lot of scoring with Scherzer (19-2, 2.88 ERA) facing the last-place White Sox (57-85).

Scherzer, who ranks in majors' top 10 in wins, strikeouts (209), ERA and opponent batting average (.196), is 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA in his last five starts against Chicago.

He's 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in his last two outings at U.S. Cellular Field, though the White Sox pulled out a 4-3, 11-inning win there Aug. 13. The right-hander also held Chicago to three hits over 7 2-3 innings in a 3-0 home win on Aug. 3.

Now Scherzer will make his third bid to become the Tigers' second 20-game winner in three years.

Scherzer limited the Red Sox to two runs and five hits over seven-plus innings Tuesday but lost 2-1. It was his first defeat on the road, where he's 8-1 with a 2.17 ERA in 14 starts.

"He pitched terrific," manager Jim Leyland said. "Early on, I thought he was as sharp as he's been all year."

Adam Dunn is 5 for 27 with 14 strikeouts the past four seasons against Scherzer, but he's batting .375 with two homers against the Tigers this year. The slugger belted his 31st home run Sunday as Chicago avoided a winless 10-game road trip with a 4-2 victory at Baltimore.

The White Sox will try win for the fifth time in six home games behind Sale (10-12, 2.97), who needs one strikeout to join Wilbur Wood and Gary Peters as the only lefties in franchise history to record 200 strikeouts in a single season.

"We want to win as many games from here on out as we can," Sale told the league's official website. "We might not be in playoff contention, but we have pride on the line."

Since yielding eight runs in a loss to Texas on Aug. 23, Sale has returned to his elite form by fanning 18 and allowing three earned runs in his last two starts.

He's pitched well versus the Tigers this season, going 2-1 with a 2.66 ERA with 25 strikeouts in three starts. He pitched a nine-hitter in a 6-2 home win Aug. 12.

Miguel Cabrera, who leads the majors in batting average (.353) and RBIs (133), homered off Sale in that contest and is 3 for 7 with two homers against him this season. Cabrera, though, has gone 2 for 14 in his last five games overall as he continues to deal with an abdominal strain.

Teammate Victor Martinez should be happy to see Sale since he's 8 for 11 against him this season. He's also batting .408 in 13 games versus the White Sox.

The Tigers have won eight of 13 meetings this season, including four of seven in Chicago.

              • Preview: Astros (47-96) at Mariners (65-78)
                Game: 1
                Venue: Safeco Field
                Date: September 09, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

After beating the Houston Astros in his major league debut, Taijuan Walker wasn't as sharp his last time out.

Fortunately for him, he gets to face baseball's worst team again Monday night.

Walker is set to make what will likely be his final start of the year as the Seattle Mariners open a three-game home set against the Astros.

Considered one of the league's top prospects, Walker (1-0, 3.60 ERA) has provided Mariners fans with a glimpse of the future. The 21-year-old right-hander showed off his stuff Aug. 30 in a 7-1 victory at Houston, yielding one unearned run and two hits in five innings.

"He was really impressive," Astros outfielder L.J. Hoes said of the 6-foot-4 Walker. "He's a big kid. On his video, he didn't look as big as he really is. It says he's throwing 96 (mph), but it seems way harder than that because he's so big."

Walker started off strong Wednesday with three innings of no-hit ball before allowing four runs in the fourth in a 6-4 win at Kansas City. He came back out to throw a 1-2-3 fifth but didn't factor in the decision.

"In the fourth, he just came up in the zone a little bit," manager Eric Wedge said. "I was glad to see him get through it. And then I was really happy to see him out there in the fifth and pitch another inning for us. I felt it was important to go out in the fifth. That proves something to him. We know he can do it.

"I love his repertoire of pitches and the way he works, his cutter and his breaking ball off his fastball. The changeup will continue to come, too."

Though it wasn't his best showing, Walker earned high praise from Royals manager Ned Yost.

"You can see what all the hype was about," Yost said of Walker, who is on an innings limit and expected to be shut down following this start. "He's got a free and easy power arm. He's a good talent."

Walker now turns his attention back to the Astros (47-96), who have dropped 10 of 13. Houston is looking to avoid a fourth consecutive loss after going 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position during Sunday's 7-2 defeat at Oakland.

The Astros will try to bounce back behind fellow rookie Jarred Cosart (1-1, 2.13), who exited Tuesday after throwing a season-low four innings in a 9-6 loss to Minnesota. The 23-year-old right-hander gave up a season-high four runs on a pair of two-run homers.

"It's kind of what everyone's been waiting for," said Cosart, who had been taken deep once in his first eight starts. "I didn't get the results. A starter's job is to keep the team in the game and give us a chance to win the game. I didn't do that."

Cosart could bounce back on the road, where he is 1-1 with a 1.38 ERA in six outings. He has surrendered one or zero runs in five of those games.

Cosart will be making his first appearance against the Mariners (65-78), who were denied a three-game sweep by Tampa Bay with a 4-1 loss Sunday. Seattle is hitting .172 with runners in scoring position during a 6-11 stretch.

The Mariners have taken eight of 10 from Houston.

                • Preview: Diamondbacks (72-70) at Dodgers (83-59)
                  Game: 1
                  Venue: Dodger Stadium
                  Date: September 09, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Dodgers could have the right pitcher on the mound to help them end their longest losing streak since early May.

They'll try to end a four-game slide Monday night at home when they send the surging Ricky Nolasco to face the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Los Angeles (83-59) was swept over the weekend in a three-game series in Cincinnati, although it still leads second-place Arizona (72-70) by a commanding 11 games. The Dodgers, however, have missed a chance to gain ground on NL-leading Atlanta, trailing the Braves by two games in the race for home-field advantage.

This is the club's longest slide since an eight-game skid May 1-10.

Nolasco (12-9, 3.26 ERA) is 7-1 with a 2.27 ERA with the Dodgers, who acquired him from Miami on July 6. He is 6-0 with a 2.11 ERA in his last nine outings, yielding two runs over six innings in Tuesday's 7-4 victory at Colorado.

"He's been great because he's pitched well pretty much every time out," manager Don Mattingly said. "He's kind of solidified that fourth guy for us and that's where we had been searching."

The right-hander, who has pitched 20 1-3 consecutive scoreless innings at home, is 7-2 with a 3.84 ERA in 10 career starts against the Diamondbacks - 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA in two this year.

Nolasco will face an Arizona team that totaled eight runs while hitting .230 in splitting four games in San Francisco to start a seven-game trip.

"We have not swung the bats very well at all, especially in the good situations,' Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "We're not in a good streak right now."

Slugger Paul Goldschmidt is enduring a season-high 17-game homerless drought since hitting his 31st on Aug. 20. Goldschmidt is batting .365 with four homers and 14 RBIs in the season series, and is 2 for 8 against Nolasco.

Gerardo Parra is 1 for 14 versus Nolasco while Didi Gregorius is 6 for 9 and Aaron Hill 5 for 9.

Arizona will be short-handed since Cliff Pennington returned home after Sunday's 3-2, 11-inning loss to the Giants to be with his wife, who will undergo induced labor Monday. Martin Prado has missed the last two games with an illness.

The Diamondbacks are 7-5 against the Dodgers this year, including a 5-1 mark at Dodger Stadium - where they have won 15 of 20.

They will start Randall Delgado (4-5, 3.69), who is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in his last six starts. The right-hander's lone outing against the Dodgers this year was a 6-1 loss July 8 in which he surrendered three runs and a career-high 11 hits over six innings.

All of the Dodgers' losses to the Reds were by one run, but Mattingly was more satisfied after Sunday's 3-2 defeat - the club's second straight in walk-off fashion.

"I was happier with our game tonight than I was the first two," the manager said. "I wasn't that excited about our focus. Tonight was better for me. Our focus was better.'

Adrian Gonzalez is batting a team-high .391 in the season series with nine RBIs while Carl Crawford is 5 for 33 (.152).

                  • Preview: Rockies (66-78) at Giants (64-79)
                    Game: 1
                    Venue: AT&T Park
                    Date: September 09, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

Jhoulys Chacin flirted with a no-hitter the last time he faced the San Francisco Giants.

Now he'll face them in a place where he has excelled.

The Colorado Rockies starter has pitched well at AT&T Park heading into Monday night's matchup with Tim Lincecum to start a three-game set.

Chacin (13-8, 3.16 ERA) battled through a high fever to throw 6 2-3 hitless innings before Brandon Crawford singled in a 5-4 victory for Colorado (66-78) on Aug. 28. It marked the longest bid for a no-hitter ever at Coors Field.

"We couldn't figure him out," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said after that game. "He mixed it up, we chased some pitches and just couldn't get anything going against him."

The right-hander is 2-1 in four starts at AT&T Park with a 1.44 ERA - his lowest mark in any visiting stadium in which he has started more than twice.

Chacin's previous outing against the Giants extended his streak to 10 starts in a row in which he yielded three runs or fewer. That was snapped Tuesday when he allowed four over seven innings to suffer a 7-4 defeat to the Dodgers.

Crawford is a .318 hitter against Chacin, Pablo Sandoval is at .292 and Buster Posey is 7 for 16.

Lincecum (9-13, 4.50) has posted a 4.24 ERA in winning three straight starts for the first time in three seasons. He wasn't happy after he gave up five runs in 5 2-3 innings Wednesday in a 13-5 win at San Diego.

"I didn't attack it the way I wanted to," Lincecum said. "When you have the answers to the test and you don't put them down, it is a little frustrating."

The right-hander is 0-2 with an 8.00 ERA in three starts against the Rockies this year. Michael Cuddyer is one of three Colorado hitters to take Lincecum deep and is 6 for 14 against him overall.

DJ LeMahieu figures to be back in the Rockies lineup after he was rested in Sunday's 5-2 loss at San Diego. LeMahieu is 16 for 41 (.390) during a career-high 10-game hitting streak.

He could help spark Colorado, which totaled six runs and hit .177 while being swept in three games over the weekend by the Padres.

Catcher Wilin Rosario missed the last two games due to problems with his wisdom teeth, and his status for Monday is unclear.

These teams have split 16 meetings, and the last-place Giants (64-79) enter this series after splitting four home games with Arizona. Angel Pagan delivered the winning RBI single in the 11th inning of Sunday's 3-2 victory.

Posey has two hits in his return after missing four games with a fracture in his swollen right ring finger. He's hitting .420 with four homers and 11 RBIs against the Rockies this year.

Teammate Hunter Pence needs a home run to become the first Giants player to record at least 20 home runs and 20 steals in a season since Barry Bonds in 1998.

Colorado's Dexter Fowler is hitting a team-high .385 in the season series, but has missed the last two games with a knee injury.
