  • Preview: Rays (77-64) at Mariners (65-77)
    Game: 3
    Venue: Safeco Field
    Date: September 08, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

Seemingly assured of a playoff appearance a little more than a month ago, the Tampa Bay Rays' postseason fate has become a lot less certain. They might miss out on the playoffs altogether for the second straight year if they don't soon find a way to turn things around.

Giving the ball to Matt Moore against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday at Safeco Field figures to be a good start as Tampa Bay tries to avoid losing control of an AL wild-card berth.

The Rays (77-64) suffered a 6-2 loss at Seattle on Saturday, their 11th defeat in 14 games.

They owned the AL's best record at 64-43 on July 30, giving them a one-half game divisional edge over Boston. Tampa Bay has since gone 13-21 with only Miami (13-22), the Chicago Cubs (12-23) and Houston (12-25) posting worst records.

The AL East race is essentially over with the Red Sox running their lead up to 8 1/2 games, while Saturday's loss trimmed the Rays' wild-card advantage to one game over Cleveland and Baltimore. New York and Kansas City aren't too far off the pace either at 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 games, respectively.

Tampa Bay has totaled 37 runs and is 21 for 127 (.165) with runners in scoring position during the 3-11 stretch and managed just two runs and four hits over six innings off Seattle starter James Paxton in his big league debut Saturday.

Evan Longoria broke a nine-game drought without an RBI by connecting for a two-run homer, but Desmond Jennings, Yunel Escobar, Wil Myers and David DeJesus are a combined 5 for 47 (.106) with runners in scoring position since Aug. 25.

"We're just unable to get the hit when you need to," manager Joe Maddon said. "I know we gave up six runs, but sometimes you've got to score seven, you've got to score eight. We're still unable to really put an offense together."

Tampa Bay is hopeful it won't need many runs with Moore (15-3, 3.27 ERA) on the mound in his second start since spending a month on the disabled list due to elbow soreness.

The left-hander showed little rust in a 7-1 road win over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday, allowing four hits and an unearned run while striking out six in 5 1-3 innings.

Moore is 7-0 in his last eight outings with a 2.06 ERA.

"It didn't really feel foreign out there. I think all of the thoughts I had were pretty typical for a start," Moore said. "Just being able to travel with the team on the road when I was on the DL and be in the dugout in every home game was big for me because it helped me stay in the game."

Moore went 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA in three starts versus Seattle last year, recording 23 strikeouts in 20 innings.

Seattle will counter with Erasmo Ramirez (5-1, 5.07), who gave up four runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings of a 5-4 win at Tampa Bay on Aug. 13, but owns a 2.81 ERA over four starts since.

A Mariners win Sunday would mark their first series sweep of the Rays in three games or more since Aug. 7-9, 2006, in Seattle.

    • Preview: Rockies (66-77) at Padres (64-77)
      Game: 3
      Venue: PETCO Park
      Date: September 08, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

Ian Kennedy said joining the San Diego Padres has rejuvenated him, and he would probably love to repay them with a string of strong outings to end the season.

The right-hander will seek to build on a superb performance Sunday while helping the Padres sweep a home series against the Colorado Rockies for the first time in seven years.

A 21-game winner in 2011 with Arizona, Kennedy was 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts for the Diamondbacks this year when he was dealt to San Diego (64-77) on July 31. He's 3-1 with a 4.04 ERA in six outings with the Padres but has allowed two runs or fewer in four of those games.

He gave up one run over six innings and struck out seven in a 4-1 victory against San Francisco on Monday, his first win in 12 starts versus an NL West opponent this season.

"Maybe I just needed a little change of scenery," said Kennedy, who is 1-5 with a 4.97 ERA against divisional foes in 2013. "The coaching staff, the players, everyone has just made it really easy on me to feel comfortable."

Kennedy has seemed comfortable at Petco Park lately, going 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in his last two outings there, but not in recent matchups with Colorado. He's 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two meetings this season but both of those games were at Coors Field.

The Rockies (66-77) have dropped 17 of 22 on the road after a 2-1 loss Saturday. Jedd Gyorko hit the tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and used some trickery on Michael Cuddyer for a game-ending double play.

Gyorko got Cuddyer to slide into second base on Nolan Arenado's fly ball and was easily thrown out at first.

"A great play," right fielder Will Venable said. "Middle infielders try to do that all the time, sometimes it works better than others. Fortunately, for us, it worked out great."

San Diego will next try to pull off a sweep of the Rockies at home for the first time since Sept. 4-6, 2006, while adding to winless rookie Chad Bettis' woes.

Bettis (0-3, 5.45) gave up five runs over 4 2-3 innings in his seventh career start Monday, a 10-8 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"We put up that many hits and that many runs, as a pitching staff you want to win that game," Bettis told the team's website. "They stole one from us, for sure. Everybody on offense was unbelievable today and as a staff we should have been better."

The right-hander has allowed 18 runs in his last four starts spanning 18 2-3 innings.

The Padres recorded their most recent sweep over the Rockies from Sept. 19-21, 2011, in Denver.

      • Preview: Dodgers (83-58) at Reds (81-62)
        Game: 3
        Venue: Great American Ball Park
        Date: September 08, 2013 8:05 PM EDT

Clayton Kershaw has suddenly looked vulnerable in his last two starts.

        Homer Bailey sure hasn't.

As Kershaw tries to recapture the form of a Cy Young Award favorite, the Los Angeles Dodgers look to halt Bailey's scoreless innings streak Sunday night in the finale of their season series with the Cincinnati Reds.

Los Angeles (83-58) also wants to avoid losing four straight for the first time since an eight-game skid to begin May. All three defeats have been away from home after the Dodgers had lost three of their previous 27 road games.

The last two have come in Cincinnati, including a 4-3 loss in 10 innings Saturday as recent call-up Billy Hamilton stole second as a pinch runner and scored on Todd Frazier's single. The 22-year-old speedster is 4 for 4 on steal attempts but has yet to make a plate appearance.

"There aren't many like him," manager Dusty Baker said. "Those are guys you know are going to steal, and they steal anyway."

It seems unlikely Hamilton will get his first at-bat against Kershaw (14-8, 1.89 ERA), the majors' ERA leader. The left-hander admitted to not having his best stuff in his past two outings as he failed to last six innings either time - something that didn't happen once in his previous 22 starts.

"Obviously, there's nothing wrong with Clayton Kershaw," manager Don Mattingly said.

However, Kershaw lost to the lowly Cubs on Aug. 27 when he allowed seven hits and three walks in 5 2-3 innings of a 3-2 defeat. His next outing was worse though Kershaw won, surrendering a career-high 11 hits and five runs in five innings of a 10-8 victory at Colorado.

"There's nothing to gain from pitching bad like this," Kershaw said. "I'm just going to chalk this up to a bad start and enjoy getting a win I probably didn't deserve."

Kershaw has yielded one run in three straight starts versus Cincinnati (81-62), going eight innings July 26 when the Dodgers won 2-1.

He outdueled Bailey (10-10, 3.42), whose only mistake in seven innings was a two-run homer to Hanley Ramirez.

"There's a reason why Kershaw has had the best ERA in the last three years, so it was out of my control," Bailey said after that defeat.

The right-hander is 5-0 in seven outings since that game with a 1.27 ERA in the past four.

Bailey has been particularly dominant in the last two as he defeated St. Louis both times, striking out 15 in 14 1-3 scoreless innings. He yielded a combined seven hits and three walks.

Another pitchers' duel could be on tap after the first six games between these likely playoff participants were exactly that. Each team has won three and scored 14 runs in the season series, though Cincinnati has won both this weekend by one run.

"We're looking for the sweep," Frazier said. "You try to win every series, but right now, every win is huge."

Frazier is batting .400 this month and Shin-Soo Choo has a .484 average in his last eight.

Joey Votto entered this series in a 4-for-37 slump, but he's reached base in all nine plate appearances with four hits and five walks. He's struck out 11 times in 20 at_bats against Kershaw but has also homered twice.

Brandon Phillips is 8 for 19 off Kershaw, so the Reds surely hope he returns after getting Saturday off for a quad contusion suffered two days earlier.

Yasiel Puig homered for the third time in 10 games Saturday and is batting .389 in that span after a 15-game stretch in which he hit .185.

Adrian Gonzalez broke a 1-for-18 slump with four hits. He's 9 for 18 with five homers off Bailey.

                    • MLB Top 3: Monday pitchers trending toward the 'under'

With the race for playoff positioning heating up, teams are relying more than ever on quality starting pitching. Run prevention in September often means the difference between a spot in the postseason and a long offseason.

Here are three Monday pitchers who have delivered on the 'under' in recent games:

Chris Tillman, Baltimore Orioles (15-5, 3.71 ERA)

Tillman's emergence as an ace in his fifth major-league season has helped keep the Orioles' playoff hopes afloat. The 25-year-old Anaheim, Calif., native has delivered four straight "under" results, and is particularly stingy at home - registering 10 'unders' versus just four 'overs'. Tillman is coming off a rough outing against Cleveland, but has a 3.26 ERA in nine starts since the All-Star break and is primed for a strong bounce-back performance.

The Orioles open a four-game series with the visiting New York Yankees on Monday.

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (9-8, 3.33 ERA)

Weaver is having a down year by his standards - having won 38 games over his previous two seasons - but has still been a revelation for 'under' bettors. The lanky 30-year-old has been one of the most reliable pitchers in the league in that regard, recording 16 'unders' against just five 'overs' so far in 2013. He has been especially strong in the second half, going 6-3 with a 3.03 ERA in 10 starts.

The Angels visit the Minnesota Twins on Monday in a makeup game from an April 17 rainout.

Jarred Cosart, Houston Astros (1-1, 2.13 ERA)

The Astros aren't going to the postseason anytime soon, but fans have to be encouraged by Cosart's first taste of major-league action. The 23-year-old Texan has gone 'under' in six of his first nine starts, with all of those results coming on the road. Cosart's previous outing was a difficult one - he was tagged for four runs over four innings in a no-decision against Minnesota - but he has allowed more than three runs just twice in 2013.

The Astros kick off a three-game series against the host Seattle Mariners on Monday.

                      • Bettors beware big MLB moneyline favorites

The Oakland Athletics are holding strong atop the American League West while the Houston Astros dwindle at the bottom, after the A’s took two of the first three games of a four-game set this week.

However, if you were betting on Oakland during that span, you’re in the red thanks to the hefty price tags on the home side. The Athletics were tabbed as -275, -270 and “thrifty” -217 favorites during the first three games of the series, and a $100 Oakland bettor would down almost $17 over those three contests.

Moneylines in the -270 and up range are more common this time year, especially when a playoff-bound team plays a basement dweller with no motivation in September. While the odds may look like a sure thing, big MLB favorites have been anything but money in the bank this season.

Favorites of -270 or higher are just 9-7 as of Sunday. If you bet $100 on each of those teams you would be down more than -$388. Moneyline chalk of -300 or higher is a bankroll draining 2-4. The Texas Rangers are 1-2 as -300 or more favorites while Detroit is 1-1 and Tampa Bay lost its lone game as a -320 favorite.

Last year, big MLB favorites lived up to the oddsmakers expectations. Teams priced between -270 and up went a collective 15-2. In 2011, those moneyline monsters were 10-4. Those most consistent winners over the past three years (2011-2013) have been favorites between -270 and -280, which are a combined 12-2.

There was a rash of big favorites between 2009 and 2010, with a total of 77 games having a moneyline favorite of -270 and above. Those high-priced teams went a collective 56-14, which may seem like a respectable record until you size up the return on investment on those massive odds.

The New York Yankees hope to move ahead of a team they're chasing in the wild-card race, but they may need CC Sabathia to end his struggles in Baltimore to make that happen.

Sabathia and the Yankees look to snap their longest losing streak in Baltimore in 31 years Monday night when they open a key four-game series against All-Star Chris Tillman and the Orioles.

New York (76-67), fourth in the AL East, salvaged the finale of its four-game set against first-place Boston on Sunday when Ichiro Suzuki scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the ninth inning for a 4-3 win.

"We needed it, because we've had some pretty tough games the last couple days," said manager Joe Girardi, whose team could be without Derek Jeter for this series because of soreness in his surgically repaired left ankle.

While they trail the Red Sox by 10 games in the division, the Yankees are 2 1/2 games back of Tampa Bay - with Baltimore (76-66) and Cleveland in between - for the AL's final wild-card spot.

Now New York has a chance to slide past the Orioles with Sabathia (13-11, 4.86 ERA) on the mound in the opener of a 10-game road trip. The Yankees, however, have dropped five straight in Baltimore, their longest skid since losing nine in a row there between 1981-82.

Sabathia hasn't been sharp with a 6.88 ERA since July 21, but he's been helped by 30 runs of support in winning four of five starts. He showed improvement in his most recent outing Wednesday, when he yielded three runs and five hits over 7 1-3 innings in a 6-5 win over the White Sox.

"I feel like I'm getting better," Sabathia told the league's official website. "Like I've said, I'll keep building, keep working and try to help the team win."

The left-hander hasn't fared well in Baltimore lately, though. He's 0-3 with a 5.97 ERA in his five outings at Camden Yards over the past two seasons.

Manny Machado (5 for 14) and Nick Markakis (5 for 14) have had success against Sabathia this season, while Alexi Casilla is 16 for 31 lifetime in their matchups.

Teammate Chris Davis, who leads the majors with 48 home runs, is 4 for 12 with a homer when facing Sabathia this season. The slugger is 9 for 21 with five homers and nine RBIs in six home games against the Yankees.

After taking three of four from the White Sox to open its homestand, Baltimore looks for its fifth win in six home contests by giving the ball to Tillman (15-5, 3.71).

The right-hander hopes to bounce back after allowing a season-high five walks and four runs over 5 1-3 innings in a 4-3 loss at Cleveland on Tuesday.

"As a starter, your goal is to keep it close and see what happens," said Tillman, who had a 2.57 ERA over his previous five starts. "I didn't do that. I've got to be better.'

Tillman hasn't been at his best against the Yankees, either, going 3-4 with a 7.43 ERA in nine career starts. He gave up five runs and 10 hits over 5 1-3 innings in a 5-4 loss at Yankee Stadium on July 6.

All-Star Robinson Cano is 11 for 22 with two homers against Tillman, while Alex Rodriguez is 4 for 7 with two homers.

Suzuki, however, is 2 for 16 in this matchup and 3 for 19 at Camden Yards this season.

Wild card fever is beginning to descend upon Cleveland.

Two of the contenders for the AL's second wild-card spot meet Monday night as the Cleveland Indians open a critical three-game series with the Kansas City Royals.

Kansas City (75-68) moved within 1 1/2 games of Cleveland and 3 1/2 behind Tampa Bay for the final postseason position with a 5-2 victory over Detroit Sunday, its 11th win in 14 tries. Eric Hosmer backed Bruce Chen's strong start with three hits, including a three-run homer.

The Royals, who opened their series with the Tigers with a 16-2 loss, came back to win the final two.

"After that game, it was a bad feeling," said Hosmer, who is 15 for his last 36 (.417). "They just flat out beat us that day. Just to forget it as a team and bounce back like that shows a lot about the character on the team and pitching staff."

Cleveland (76-66) saw its four-game winning streak snapped by the New York Mets Sunday, 2-1, and fell two games behind the Rays.

"We took two of three in this series, you have to look at it that way," reliever Joe Smith said. "We come back on the horse tomorrow. We need to take care of business when they come in."

The fever has yet to take over the fan base, however, as only 13,317 fans came out to Sunday's game at Progressive Field.

"Of course we notice," Ubaldo Jimenez said Tuesday after pitching Cleveland to a 4-3 win over Baltimore. "It's definitely not the same when we have a big crowd, but what can we do? We have to go out there and compete."

Jimenez (10-9, 3.79 ERA) is as responsible as anyone for Cleveland's current run into contention. He launched the Indians' four-game winning streak with one of his best starts of the season Tuesday, scattering four hits over six scoreless innings in that 4-3 victory.

"He goes out there and gives us six shutout innings against that lineup," manager Terry Francona said. "That's exciting."

Jimenez is 3-5 with a 2.22 ERA over his last eight starts and has allowed one home run over his last 43 2-3 innings.

The Royals were batting .131 off Jimenez through three starts this season, but they got to him for four runs and eight hits in four innings July 14 before the Indians rallied for a 6-4 win.

Hosmer is 6 for 19 (.316) off Jimenez with two home runs, but Alex Gordon (4 for 20) and Alcides Escobar (3 for 21) have been less successful.

Kansas City gives the ball to Ervin Santana (8-8, 3.33), who struggled in his last start but has been outstanding lately against the Indians.

The right-hander lasted a season-low 3 1-3 innings against Seattle on Wednesday, allowing four runs, seven hits and three walks while failing to record a strikeout for the first time all season.

"I didn't have my best stuff," Santana said. "I'll get them next time. I didn't pitch the way I've pitched this year. I didn't have my fastball. My location was off after the second inning."

His control has been an issue lately, as Santana has averaged 3.26 walks per nine innings since the beginning of August after averaging 1.92 through his first 21 starts.

Santana is 2-0 with a 0.86 ERA in his last three starts against Cleveland, yielding one run and nine hits over 14 innings in two this year.

He's been especially tough on Nick Swisher (9 for 41), Asdrubal Cabrera (6 for 31) and Mike Aviles (1 for 13).

Cleveland has won five straight at home against Kansas City, posting a 2.40 ERA in those games.

Indians outfielder Michael Brantley has returned to the team, and the starting lineup, after his wife gave birth to the couple's first child, a daughter. Brantley, playing left field and batting fifth Monday, went home Friday and missed the Mets series.
