    • Hot & Not - AL Edition

      September 10, 2013

With so many teams in the thick of the American League playoff chase, there was never a doubt that some were going to be hot and soaring, while others were going to be cold and falling off as we head down the stretch. Join us today as we look at the best and the worst of late in the world of baseball betting in the AL.

      $$$-Makers

Boston Red Sox (12-3, +$820 in L/15) - The BoSox are on a roll again, and as a result, they're probably safely in the playoffs. They're not taking anything for granted though after what happened in 2011.

On Deck: Taking two out of three at the Trop against the Rays would remove all doubt as to who was winning the AL East, but there is still the matter of the best record in the American League to deal with as well.

Toronto Blue Jays (10-3, +$820 in L/13) - Some rare heart from the Jays? Ok, if you really look at it, it was really just a dud of a schedule that got Toronto to win 10 out of 13.

On Deck: The Jays have a bit of a reprieve here against the Angels, but then come the big boys from Baltimore, New York, and Boston again. That's likely when we'll see Toronto going back in the other column and be ice cold.

Oakland Athletics (11-3, +$643 in L/14) - Run production has been good for Oakland of late, and though it hasn't been able to shake the rest of the field in the AL to lock up a spot, the team is looking good for the time being.

On Deck: If Oakland is still in front of the AL West after this weekend's series in Arlington, it's clear sailing from there. What's left are six with the Halos, four with the Twins, and three with the Mariners.

      $$$-Burners

Tampa Bay Rays (4-11, -$1,042 in L/15) - Manager Joe Maddon will be happy when he doesn't have to see the West Coast any longer. The Rays are 3-15 in their last 18 road games on the West Coast, and that's why they're struggling to hold onto their playoff spot.

On Deck: At least Tampa Bay is back at home, but if it doesn't sweep Boston this week, there is no hope to get back into the AL East chase.

Texas Rangers (3-7, -$834 in L/10) - The Rangers picked a bad time to go in the tank, as losing seven out of 10 has taken what was an AL West lead and turned it into a two-game deficit with less than three weeks to play.

On Deck: The club has it rough this next week and a half with games against the Pirates, A's, and Rays, but after that, the last seven are against the Astros and Angels. There will be a shot to go on a run here after all.

Chicago White Sox (2-9, -$590 in L/11) - Losing nine straight road games will do that to you. The Sox have the potential to end up with the worst road record in baseball this year, and that 25-51 mark is what is really holding this team back.

On Deck: At least they're home games, but the Tigers and the Indians for six games don't exactly make for good results in all likelihood.

      • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Bronx Bombers' contract obligations for next season.........that adds up to $81.125M for five players, $84.125M if they ax Jeter.

        -- Alex Rodriguez, $26,000,000
-- Vernon Wells, $2.5M (2 other teams are paying his other $22.125M)
        -- Mark Teixeira, $23.125,000
        -- CC Sabathia, $23,000,000
-- Derek Jeter has a $3M buyout if they don't want him around.
        -- Ichiro Suzuki, $6,500,000

Everyone else is either a free agent, arbitration eligible or a minor leaguer. As far as Robinson Cano is concerned, the Dodgers are supposedly giving Alexander Guerrero $32M for five years, and he plays infield, so that will probably take them out of the Cano bidding.

                      • Preview: Yankees (76-68) at Orioles (77-66)
                        Game: 2
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
                        Date: September 10, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

The Baltimore Orioles are enjoying their longest home win streak over the New York Yankees in 30 years, and there may be added incentive for both teams as their four-game set continues.

The confrontation between managers Buck Showalter and Joe Girardi was the story of the series opener, and the Orioles will look to make it seven straight at home over the Yankees on Tuesday night.

Baltimore (77-66) started this critical series with a 4-2 win Monday, and is on its longest run at home over New York since winning 10 in a row at Memorial Stadium from 1981-83.

The Orioles and Cleveland are both 1 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay for the AL's second wild card while the Yankees (76-68) fell three games back with their fourth loss in five games.

The pressure of the pennant race was evident Monday. Both dugouts emptied briefly after the first inning, when Showalter angrily exchanged words with Girardi after the Yankees manager yelled at Baltimore third base coach Bobby Dickerson, accusing him of stealing signs. Showalter had to be restrained by home plate umpire Ed Hickox as he charged onto the field.

"Two competitive good teams and we're fighting for the same thing, so there's a small margin for error. ... But Bobby's not giving pitches,' Showalter said.

Girardi did not divulge details about the incident.

"The one thing that I've done, the whole time that I'm here, and everywhere I've been, is I'm going to protect our players at all lengths," Girardi said. "That's what I'm going to do, and there was something that I saw and I'm just going to leave it at that."

The Orioles may like their chances of maintaining their streak over the Yankees since they are 9-2 at home when they start Miguel Gonzalez (9-7, 3.98 ERA), who gets the ball Tuesday.

Gonzalez is 6-2 with a 3.80 ERA at home as a starter, earning his first victory since July 20 by limiting the White Sox to one run over seven innings in a 3-1 win Thursday.

The right-hander, however, is 0-2 with a 4.70 ERA in four starts against the Yankees this year. Robinson Cano is 2 for 15 against him all-time, but Ichiro Suzuki is 4 for 13 with two homers and a double.

The Yankees will start Ivan Nova (8-4, 3.02), who is 4-0 with a 2.47 ERA in his last seven outings. New York won the first six of that span before the right-hander gave up four runs in four innings in Thursday's 9-8, 10-inning loss to Boston.

Nova's previous start was a two-hitter for his first career shutout in a 2-0 victory over Baltimore on Aug. 31. He also went the distance with a three-hitter and season-high 11 strikeouts in his other 2013 start versus the Orioles, a 3-2 victory July 5.

Adam Jones is 0 for 10 against Nova this year, Manny Machado is 1 for 11 and Chris Davis is 1 for 7 with a homer.

The Orioles who have fared better are Nick Markakis (3 for 10) and Matt Wieters (3 for 7). Markakis had three hits Monday after going 5 for 32 in his previous nine games.

Alex Rodriguez and Lyle Overbay homered Monday for New York. Overbay, however, is hitless in seven 2013 at_bats versus Gonzalez.

Girardi said that Derek Jeter (ankle) remains day to day while relievers David Robertson and Boone Logan remain unavailable Tuesday.

Baltimore needs one victory in the final three games of this set to win a season series against New York for the first time since 1997.

The last time Mark Buehrle put together a personal seven-game winning streak, he ended the season winning a World Series.

Buehrle goes for his longest winning streak in eight years Tuesday night when the last-place Blue Jays attempt to win for the 11th time in 14 tries in a matchup against the Los Angeles Angels.

Buehrle (11-7, 3.88 ERA) is 6-0 with a 2.02 ERA over his last nine starts, winning all four at home with a 1.27 ERA.

The veteran left-hander hasn't produced a longer overall winning streak since going 9-0 during a 14-start stretch with the Chicago White Sox from April 16-June 28, 2005.

That season the White Sox went on to win the World Series, but Toronto (67-76) is all but mathematically assured of finishing at the bottom of the AL East in 2013.

                          Still, Buehrle is finding motivation.

"I've got a couple more starts left, and I'm going to go out there and try to finish the season strong," Buehrle told the team's official website. "Personally, I feel like I'm back to where I've been throughout my career. I just wish we were in a better spot than we are."

Buehrle's recent winning streak, though, includes a rough outing in a 6-5 road victory over Los Angeles on Aug. 4. He gave up five runs and two homers in six innings before the offense bailed him out by scoring four times in the final two.

He's 0-2 with a 4.85 ERA over his last four meetings with the Angels (67-76).

Beating them for the first time since Sept. 5, 2008, would keep the Blue Jays hot after they did all of their scoring in the eighth inning in Sunday's 2-0 win at Minnesota to complete a three-game sweep.

Jose Reyes had two hits, including an RBI double, and is 10 for 22 with seven runs and three RBIs over the past five games.

He shares Buehrle's attitude about September.

"The season isn't over yet, and I feel that good," said Reyes, who missed 66 games with a sprained left ankle earlier this season. "I still feel it a little bit, but it's way better than it was months ago. Hopefully, I'll keep feeling better, and I can go into the offseason with a better idea and go to spring training 100 percent, and do what I do best, just play my game."

The Angels send Jerome Williams (6-10, 4.60) to the mound looking to avoid a third straight loss after opening a season-long 10-game trip with a 6-3 defeat to Minnesota on Monday.

The right-hander allowed two runs with seven strikeouts in 6 1-3 innings of a 6-2 win over Tampa Bay on Thursday. He had been 0-8 with a 6.15 ERA over his 15 previous games - 13 starts - dating to a victory at Baltimore on June 12.

Williams is 0-2 with a 5.03 ERA in six road starts since.

"I'm just going out here and doing my job, trying to do my best," Williams said. "As long as at the end of the day, end of the season, I can look myself in the mirror and say, 'I did OK,' that's fine."

Los Angeles' Mike Trout is 16 for 37 (.432) during an 11-game hit streak. He has a .553 on-base percentage during that span.

After gaining ground in the playoff hunt, the Cleveland Indians are looking for more.

The Kansas City Royals, meanwhile, are hoping to avoid falling even farther behind.

The Indians go for a seventh straight home win over the Royals when these playoff hopefuls continue a three-game set Tuesday night.

Asdrubal Cabrera, Yan Gomes and Carlos Santana all homered and Cleveland (77-66) hung on for a 4-3 victory in Monday's opener. Chris Perez got Alex Gordon to fly out with the bases loaded to end the game as the Indians climbed to within 1 1/2 games of Tampa Bay for the AL's second wild-card spot and 4 1/2 of Central-leading Detroit.

"I had a stomachache. That's about as nail baiting as you can get," said manager Terry Francona, whose team has won five of six. "You try to be one run better. Tonight, I feel like we were a tenth of a run better."

The Indians have surrendered just 16 runs during their six-game home winning streak against the Royals (75-69), who fell four games behind the Rays and are seven in back of the Tigers.

"This ain't no time to feel snakebit," manager Ned Yost said. "It was a good game and we battled to the end. Tough loss, though. This was a tough loss. We just couldn't get it done."

Gordon finished 2 for 5 with a two-run homer, the 100th of his career. Eric Hosmer, Salvador Perez and Jarrod Dyson each added two hits, but Kansas City went 2 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

"This was a tough one, especially coming against a team that's right in it with us," said Gordon, hitting .326 with five homers, 15 RBIs and 17 runs in his last 20 games.

The Royals will try to get back on track against Indians starter Zach McAllister (7-8, 3.97 ERA). The right-hander has been knocked around following a career-high three-start winning streak, going 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA in his last two outings spanning 8 1-3 innings.

McAllister surrendered four runs in 4 2-3 innings Wednesday in a 6-4 win over Baltimore.

McAllister went 1-1 with a 4.97 ERA in two starts against the Royals last year. Mike Moustakas and Billy Butler are both 0 for 5 in their matchups, but Gordon is 2 for 6 with a homer and a double.

The Royals counter with Jeremy Guthrie (13-10, 4.19), who is 1-3 with a 5.11 ERA in his last six outings. The right-hander had allowed one run in each of his previous two starts covering a combined 12 innings before giving up five in six frames Thursday in a 7-6, 13-inning victory over Seattle.

Guthrie, 1-3 with a 6.60 ERA in his last five matchups against the Indians, has yielded five or six runs in all but one of those games. Nick Swisher and recently acquired Jason Kubel are a combined 22 for 62 with 14 extra-base hits - four homers - off Guthrie.

While Swisher is mired in a 5-for-26 slump (.192), two of those hits left the yard. Swisher is 7 for his last 45 (.156) with no homers and one RBI in his last 13 games against the Royals.

Santana, in contrast, is 19 for 47 (.404) with two homers, five doubles and 11 RBIs in the series this year.

                            • Preview: Padres (65-77) at Phillies (66-77)
                              Game: 1
                              Venue: Citizens Bank Park

Looking to extend a hot stretch just like their opponent is, the San Diego Padres likely have to generate the run support they've lacked in Andrew Cashner's recent starts to continue theirs.

Pitching well despite being winless in more than a month, Cashner tries to help visiting San Diego win its fourth straight Tuesday night while keeping the Philadelphia Phillies from their longest win streak in three months.

The Padres (65-77) finished a 5-1 homestand Sunday when Nick Hundley delivered a go-ahead, three-run double in the seventh inning in a 5-2 win over Colorado. It was the first time since June 1998 that they won three straight games despite being tied or behind in the seventh inning or later.

Now San Diego hopes to come up big at the plate for Cashner (8-8, 3.45 ERA), who is 0-3 in his last five starts despite a 2.18 ERA. The Padres dropped four of those games and totaled nine runs, including only four when Cashner was on the mound.

The right-hander has yielded two earned runs over his last 21 innings, and he'll try to provide a lift for a rotation that has a 5.52 ERA in dropping eight of 10 away from home. However, Cashner has a 4.61 ERA on the road compared to 2.14 at home.

The converted reliever will start on nine days' rest after throwing a career-high 119 pitches Aug. 31, when he allowed a run in seven innings but did not get a decision in a 2-1 loss to the Dodgers.

"Cash is feeling good," manager Bud Black told the league's official website. "We want him to keep pitching. And he's going to make his starts. He's been great all year."

Cashner, who has given up three earned runs or less in nine straight starts, has a 1.80 ERA against the Phillies in six appearances - all in relief.

Chase Utley has never seen Cashner, but he's batting .385 with three home runs in his last seven games against the Padres. The second baseman is 8 for 17 in his last five games overall.

Utley had two hits and Darin Ruf hit the go-ahead, solo homer in the eighth inning as the Phillies (66-77) swept NL East-leading Atlanta with Sunday's 3-2 victory.

Philadelphia starters posted a 2.45 ERA while striking out 27 in the three games.

"I think it means a lot," said interim manager Ryne Sandberg, who looks to guide the Phillies to four straight wins for the first time since a five-game run June 2-6.

"There are games to be played. And there are games to be won."

Tyler Cloyd (2-3, 3.57) will try to continue the team's recent success on the mound while making the most of another opportunity in the rotation.

The right-hander, who replaces the struggling Ethan Martin, recently received his fourth call-up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season. Cloyd last appeared for Philadelphia on Aug. 24, when he walked five but gave up two hits over five shutout innings of relief in a 12-7, 18-inning loss to Arizona.

He was tagged for five runs over six innings in a 5-3 loss to Colorado in his last start Aug. 20 after posting a 1.45 ERA in his previous three, but those came in June.

The Phillies took two of three in San Diego from June 24-26.

Strong pitching is a big reason why the Atlanta Braves tend to have little trouble with the Miami Marlins on the road.

Julio Teheran didn't have much in his latest meeting with the lowly NL East rival.

After outpitching phenom Jose Fernandez in his most recent outing, Teheran attempts to beat the Marlins again and help the Braves continue their dominance in Miami on Tuesday night.

Atlanta (86-57) has won 20 of its past 25 visits to Miami behind a 2.07 ERA. The staff has a 1.77 ERA, while going 13-3 at Marlins Park, which opened last year.

The Braves continued that dominant stretch by doing all of their scoring in the fourth inning of a 5-2 win to open this four-game set.

"Five hits and five runs on one frame," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "And we made it hold up."

Giving the ball to Teheran (11-7, 3.01 ERA) may keep them rolling.

The right-hander was superb in a 2-1 win over Miami (53-89) on Aug. 30, yielding one run with eight strikeouts in 6 1-3 innings in a pitchers' duel with Fernandez.

While Fernandez is considered a favorite for the NL Rookie of the Year Award, Teheran is making a case for his own consideration by leading Atlanta with a 2.23 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 48 1-3 innings over eight starts since the All-Star break.

In an effort to monitor Teheran's innings, Atlanta, which is closing in on the division crown, opted to skip his latest outing Wednesday, which ended in a 5-2 loss to the New York Mets. Teheran's 161 1-3 innings rank third on the team and fourth among rookies.

Freddie Freeman is hitting .348 with two homers, six doubles, nine RBIs and 12 runs in 13 games against the Marlins this season. He's doubled and tripled in three at_bats against Tom Koehler, Miami's scheduled starter.

Koehler (3-9, 4.70) is 0-3 with a 5.68 ERA over his last six starts. The rookie right-hander was putting together a strong start in last Tuesday's 6-2 win at Chicago, but was charged with two runs. The first came on a leadoff homer in the fifth before Koehler walked the bases loaded and was lifted with one out.

"You give up a leadoff home run, things like that are going to happen," Koehler told the team's official website. "But after that, you have to be able to shut them down. I don't know if it was a combination of trying to do a little too much and losing the zone, and with them being a little bit more patient, but it's just one of those innings that can't happen."

Koehler has no record and a 2.00 ERA over four meetings with the Braves, giving up three runs in five innings of an 11-3 road defeat in his only career start against them.

The Marlins may have Giancarlo Stanton back in the lineup after he missed two games with a sore right ankle, suffered in a 7-0 win at Atlanta on Sept. 1.

"Best case, (Tuesday) he's ready to go," manager Mike Redmond told the team's official website. "But it really is up to him. We're going day to day. When he says he is good to go and ready to play, he will play."

Stanton has a .136 average with one homer and three RBIs in 14 season meetings with Atlanta, and he's 0 for 7 with two strikeouts and three walks versus Teheran.
