For the last three days, the Boston Red Sox have shown why they have the best record in the AL and the New York Yankees are simply fighting to reach the postseason.

With Jon Lester looking to continue his recent run of success, the Red Sox try to complete their first road series sweep of at least four games from the Yankees in 74 years on Sunday.

A winner in five straight, Boston (87-57) has batted .386 with 17 homers and 13 doubles while scoring 54 runs over the last four contests. With Saturday's 13-9 win over New York (75-67), the Red Sox became the first visiting team to score at least nine runs on three straight days against the Yankees since they did it in 1912 versus the New York Highlanders at Hilltop Park.

"Sometimes you're like, 'What's going on?' Because what we're doing now is pretty crazy,' said Boston's Mike Napoli, who is 7 for 12 with three homers and eight RBIs in the set.

The Red Sox, who last swept their archrival in a series of at least four games when they won all five July 7-9, 1939, have an 11-game lead over the fourth-place Yankees in the AL East. New York is in the mix for a wild-card berth, but has not looked like a contender while giving up 34 runs, 45 hits, nine homers and 14 walks in the set.

The news didn't get much better for the Yankees on the injury front with star Derek Jeter's status uncertain after his surgically repaired left ankle forced him to leave Saturday's game.

"I'm not sure what's going to happen right now,' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about Jeter, who is batting .190 in 17 games this season.

Lester (13-8, 3.88 ERA) posted a 4.76 ERA while splitting the two previous starts he made this season at New York, but has a 1.71 ERA while going 3-2 in his last six overall. The left-hander allowed a run and struck out a season-high nine in seven innings of a 2-1 victory over AL Central-leading Detroit on Tuesday to kick-start Boston's current winning streak.

"It's been good the last three, four, five starts, so, keep grinding it out," he said.

While Lester has pitched well of late, scheduled New York starter Hiroki Kuroda (11-10, 2.99) is 0-3 with a 7.43 ERA in his last four starts.

That stretch began Aug. 17 at Fenway Park, when he allowed five runs - three earned - and 11 hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 6-1 defeat that dropped him to 1-3 with a 4.66 ERA against the Red Sox this year.

In the right-hander's longest start of his current slump, Kuroda allowed four runs, seven hits and fanned seven in 6 1-3 innings of a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

Boston slugger David Ortiz is 3 for 13 in the series, but 7 for 12 with a homer against Kuroda.

New York's Ichiro Suzuki had two hits with an RBI on Saturday, and is 8 for his last 16 against Lester.

Boston's Jacoby Ellsbury will miss a third straight game after injuring his foot during Thursday's 9-8, 10-inning win over the Yankees.

No contending team has an easier remaining schedule than the Cleveland Indians.

They've begun to take full advantage this weekend.

Cleveland looks to win its fifth straight and complete a three-game sweep of the visiting New York Mets on Sunday.

Chasing their first playoff berth since 2007, the Indians (76-65) may have the easiest road there with only six of their final 21 games against teams currently above .500. Those six contests are against Kansas City, which visits Progressive Field for a three-game series starting Monday.

The Indians close the regular season with four games against major league-worst Houston, two with the White Sox, losers of nine straight, and four at Minnesota.

Since dropping Monday's series opener to fellow wild-card hopeful Baltimore, Cleveland has totaled 27 runs and 36 hits during a four-game win streak. Asdrubal Cabrera hit a three-run homer and Nick Swisher also went deep in Saturday's 9-4 victory over the Mets.

"This is such a great opportunity for us and we're starting to get to the middle of September,' manager Terry Francona said. "Every time we win, we're getting closer to where we want to be. It's a great chance for this team to shine and I think they're enjoying that.'

Cleveland, which hasn't won five in a row since a season-best eight-game run July 24-Aug. 1, was 6 for 12 with runners in scoring position. The Indians are 15 for 39 (.385) in such situations the past four games after going 5 for 43 (.116) in the previous seven.

"This is the push,' Swisher said. "It's been a while since this team's been in this opportunity. This is where it really counts.'

The Mets (63-77), who had four rookies in Saturday's starting lineup, have lost five of six overall and five straight interleague games.

Juan Lagares - one of those first-year players - is batting .370 during a 12-game hitting streak.

Corey Kluber gave the Indians five-plus strong innings Saturday and the team's starters have posted a 2.20 ERA in six games this month. Danny Salazar (1-2, 3.00 ERA) will try to continue that run and build on the best of his six major league starts.

The right-hander limited Detroit to six hits over six innings with five strikeouts and no walks before leaving without a decision in a 4-0 victory last Sunday. He has surrendered three runs in his past 15 1-3 innings.

The Indians are being cautious with the 23-year-old Salazar, who is three seasons removed from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and has already worked a career-high 126 innings between the minors and majors.

New York could have a difficult time avoiding the sweep with struggling Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-3, 10.95) on the mound.

It's been a very rocky start for the right-hander since joining the Mets, as he's been tagged for 15 runs and 19 hits over 12 1-3 innings in three outings. He had his worst performance Monday in a 13-5 loss at Atlanta, yielding six runs and seven hits in three innings.

"You guys saw the results. I'm very disappointed in myself,' Matsuzaka said through a translator. "The difference between my good pitches and my bad pitches was too big and that's something that's needs to change.'

Matsuzaka made 19 starts for Cleveland's Triple-A team this season before he was released at his request last month.

He is 5-3 with a 3.28 ERA in eight starts - including playoffs - against the Indians, but hasn't faced them since 2011.

Jason Kubel - mired in a 5-for-31 slump - is 7 for 13 against Matsuzaka.

Despite being without one of their best hitters, the Washington Nationals turned in an impressive offensive performance a day after being shut down by the Miami Marlins.

Stephen Strasburg looks to follow that with a dominant showing of his own Sunday in Miami, though the Marlins have recently proven to be a pesky adversary for the right-hander.

The Nationals were held to three runs and eight hits in their previous two games - including two hits in a 7-0 loss to Miami on Friday - but Ryan Zimmerman led the way with two home runs in Washington's 9-2 victory Saturday. The Nationals totaled 16 hits despite being without Bryce Harper, who was scratched following batting practice due to inflammation in his hip.

"He's going to go to see the doctor tomorrow, figure out what it is, treat it, and he'll meet us in New York, hopefully," manager Davey Johnson said, referring to his team's four-game series with the Mets beginning Monday.

Jayson Werth was 3 for 5 and Denard Span - back in the lineup after being scratched Friday due to groin tightness - was 2 for 4 to extend his career-long hitting streak to 18 games. Span is hitting .411 with 12 runs during the run.

Washington (72-69) continues to cling to slim chances of achieving a wild-card berth, trailing Cincinnati by eight games.

The Nationals can win for the 13th time in 18 games Sunday, but Strasburg (6-9, 2.85 ERA) hasn't exactly been at his best versus Miami. His 5.73 ERA in three starts this year is his highest against any team he's faced multiple times. He's also 1-2 in his last five with an 8.05 ERA after posting a 4-1 mark and 1.56 ERA through his first seven career starts against the Marlins.

Giancarlo Stanton is 7 for 18 off Strasburg with two homers and four doubles.

Strasburg has pitched without much offense behind him recently, getting credited with one win in his last nine starts despite a 2.59 ERA. He received a total of 21 runs of support in those games while striking out 65 over 55 2-3 innings.

He gave up an unearned run and two hits over six innings of a 3-2 loss at Philadelphia on Monday. The outing was cut short as he experienced difficulties gripping the ball.

"I was sweating a lot out there," he said. "It affected me not being able to pitch more innings. Strange circumstances but I have to be able to deal with it. It was tough gripping the ball like I usually do."

Miami starter Jacob Turner (3-5, 3.13) became the first pitcher to commit three errors in a game in nearly eight years in a 5-4 loss at Atlanta on Aug. 31. The right-hander was charged with three runs - two earned - four hits and four walks in 5 2-3 innings.

Turner went 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts versus Washington last year.

Marlins rookie Christian Yelich is batting .455 during an eight-game hitting streak after going 2 for 4 on Saturday.

Bud Norris is doing what the Baltimore Orioles had hoped when they acquired him at the trading deadline to help the club make a push toward the playoffs.

The right-hander looks for a third straight strong start as the Orioles try to complete a four-game sweep and send the Chicago White Sox to their second 10-game losing streak of the season Sunday.

Norris (10-10, 4.01 ERA) is 4-0 with a 4.08 ERA in seven starts since Baltimore (76-65) picked him up from Houston at the end of the July. The third-place Orioles are 9 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Boston, but still very much alive in the race for the two wild-card spots.

"It's been a great transition," Norris said. "It's been something I've dreamed of as kid - to be in a pennant race.

"To be here in Baltimore, I'm very happy with everything around me, the teammates and organization. I try to do everything I can to help us win games.'

Since Norris endured a two-start stretch where he went 1-0, but allowed 11 runs, 18 hits and walked six over 10 1-3 innings, he's yielded a run and four hits in each of his last two starts while totaling 15 strikeouts over 12 1-3 innings to also go 1-0.

He lasted seven innings and fanned eight during a 7-2 victory at Cleveland on Monday.

In his only previous start versus Chicago, Norris gave up four runs in six innings of a 4-2 loss June 17.

He'll try to help Baltimore to its first series sweep of the White Sox (56-85) since doing so at home from May 4-6, 1999.

After Conor Gillaspie's solo homer gave Chicago a 3-2 lead in the 10th inning Saturday, Baltimore's Matt Wieters delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the frame for a 4-3 victory.

The Orioles have won five of seven overall, and four in a row at home.

"We have to keep winning,' said Wieters, who is 4 for 9 with a homer and three RBIs in the series. "We have to win (Sunday) and come here with that mindset. It's go time now. There's no more get `em later. It's go now and make our run.'

With three hits Saturday, Baltimore's Danny Valencia is 16 for 28 since he was recalled from the minors Aug. 19.

Valencia usually only starts against left-handers, but his hot streak could keep him in the lineup even though the White Sox will start right-handed rookie Andre Rienzo (1-1, 5.03), who has allowed 12 runs, 14 hits - four homers - and walked seven over nine innings while going 0-1 in his last two starts. The Brazilian-born Rienzo lasted three innings last Sunday during a 7-6 loss at Boston, where he gave up five runs and walked four.

"I still feel good," Rienzo told the White Sox's official website following his seventh career start. "I'll just keep on working for the next one."

Second baseman Gordon Beckham is 0 for 11 with five strikeouts in this series for the White Sox, who dropped 10 straight July 26-Aug. 4.

"You just bounce back, keep going," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said.

Baltimore's Brian Roberts is 3 for 20 this season against the White Sox, but all three hits have been homers.

Paul Maholm will try to help by ending his recent road struggles and deny the Philadelphia Phillies a three-game sweep Sunday.

With a 13-game division lead, the Braves have a magic number of nine but haven't reduced that as much as they would have liked lately with three straight losses. Atlanta (85-56) couldn't complete their comeback in a 6-5 defeat Saturday in Philadelphia.

Andrelton Simmons hit a tying two-run homer off Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning, but Freddy Galvis ended the game with a solo shot.

"We battled back and tied it but Freddy Galvis got us," Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We had opportunities but haven't had that bloop single or ground ball through the middle, but we'll keep plugging away."

The Braves have dropped four in a row only twice this season but starting Maholm (10-10, 4.41 ERA) on the road could make avoiding another such skid difficult. The left-hander is 0-4 with a 9.16 ERA in his last four starts away from home, including a 5-4 defeat to Philadelphia (65-77) on July 5, when he gave up five runs over six innings.

He is 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA in his last two overall outings after a difficult return from the disabled list in St. Louis on Aug. 22. Maholm, who missed nearly a month with a bruised left wrist, yielded three runs over five innings in a 13-5 rout of the New York Mets on Monday.

"Sometimes you go out there and you're not in rhythm, and you just have to battle, and today was one of those days," Maholm told the team's website. "Luckily, the offense put up so many runs, my five-and-dive wasn't a big deal."

While Maholm has often labored on the road, Cole Hamels has a 2.05 ERA in his last six home starts but doesn't have a win to show for his efforts. He gave up one run and two hits over seven innings to Washington while fanning eight Monday but left with the score tied in a 3-2 victory.

"Can he feel that way all the time?" shortstop Jimmy Rollins told the team's website. "He was nasty tonight. That changeup was as nasty or the second best it's been all season long. He hit his spots and he hit every pitch where he wanted to."

Hamels (6-13, 3.50) has received some of the lowest run support in the NL - 3.36 per nine innings - and has two wins in his last seven starts despite a 1.90 ERA. The left-hander, though, earned one of those victories against Atlanta on Aug. 12, tossing a six-hitter in a 5-1 final.

He allowed five runs over five innings in his other start against the Braves this season, a 7-5 loss April 1. He's 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA in his last seven home starts versus Atlanta.

The Phillies haven't swept the Braves at home since Sept. 5-7, 2011.

With Miguel Cabrera dealing with nagging injuries, the Detroit Tigers are considering giving their superstar time off down the stretch to rest.

A day game after a night game might seem like a good idea for a break, but manager Jim Leyland may want to keep Cabrera in the lineup given his history against Kansas City Royals scheduled starter Bruce Chen.

The AL Central-leading Tigers again look to rough up Chen in Sunday's series finale in Kansas City.

Cabrera has gone 2 for 5 with three RBIs and four walks in two games after missing four of five contests with an abdominal strain. Leading the majors in batting average (.356) and RBIs (133), Cabrera is trying to chase down a second consecutive triple crown. Detroit (82-60), however, may want Cabrera to take it easy over the next three weeks so he can be healthy for the playoffs.

The 2012 AL MVP might not have to lobby too hard to get in Sunday's lineup.

Cabrera was 2 for 2 with a two-run homer against Chen (6-2, 2.81 ERA) in the left-hander's only start against the Tigers this season, a 6-3 loss on Aug. 18. Cabrera's five career homers off Chen are tied for his most against any pitcher, and his .441 average in 34 career at_bats is his best against anyone he has at faced at least 40 times.

Cabrera, though, isn't the only Tiger that regularly frustrates Chen.

Austin Jackson had two hits off Chen last month, and is 8 for 19 with a pair of doubles against him since the start of last season. The center fielder is batting .458 with six RBIs and five runs in his last six games for the Tigers, who own a 5 1/2-game lead over second-place Cleveland.

The Royals (74-68), winners of 10 of 14, are 3 1/2 games back in the wild-card race.

"I've been here for the last four years and it is very special what we're doing," Chen told the Royals' official website. "We're trying to do everything we can to win and it's very fun. We want to keep it going, so come the end of September we will be playing and be very close or maybe ahead. You never know what is going to happen."

Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer off Justin Verlander in Saturday's 4-3 win, and has been instrumental to Kansas City's playoff push, batting .408 with six home runs and 19 RBIs in his last 15 games. The All-Star catcher is 3 for 9 against scheduled starter Doug Fister (12-7, 3.66) this season.

After yielding season highs of seven runs and 13 hits in five innings of a 14-4 loss to Oakland on Aug. 28, Fister gave up four hits over seven innings in Monday's 3-0 win at Boston. He struggled with his command, walking four and hitting a batter, but the sinkerballer induced three double plays.

"Keeping the ball down, throwing pitches that I needed to induce the double plays,' the right-hander said was the difference.

Excluding the dud against the Athletics, Fister is 6-1 with a 2.11 ERA since July 12. That stretch includes two starts against the Royals, in which he's gone 1-0 with a 2.92 ERA.

Chen permitted two runs in six innings in Tuesday's 4-3 win over Seattle, but didn't get the decision. He has a 2.31 ERA in his last two starts after recording a 13.00 ERA in losing his previous two outings, which includes getting tagged for six runs over 5 1-3 innings in Detroit last month.

The Minnesota Twins continue to struggle through a woeful stretch at home. With a potential return date for Joe Mauer still unclear, those struggles may very well drag on longer.

The Twins look to avoid matching the franchise's longest home losing streak in 56 years on Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Minnesota (61-79) dropped its ninth straight game at Target Field on Saturday with an 11-2 loss to Toronto (66-76), which received two three-run homers from Adam Lind.

Another defeat for the Twins on Sunday would be the team's first 10-game home losing streak since Sept. 15-29, 1957, when the franchise was still known as the Washington Senators.

Not much has gone right for the Twins during the skid as they've posted a 6.11 ERA, have scored 20 runs and are batting .167 with runners in scoring position.

Mauer, who ranks third in the AL with a .324 average, hasn't played since suffering a concussion on Aug. 19. He took batting practice with the team before Saturday's game but a timetable for his return still hasn't been established.

Toronto's Esmil Rogers (4-7, 4.76 ERA) will try to keep Minnesota's offense grounded after breaking an 11-start winless slump his last time out. Rogers tossed 6 1-3 shutout innings while yielding one hit in a 4-1 win at Arizona on Monday, his first victory since June 18.

He also didn't allow a home run after surrendering eight over 22 1-3 innings in his five August games.

"I just try to do everything I can to be here," said Rogers, who has made 40 appearances including a career-high 16 starts in his first season with the club. "I'm going to get a couple of more opportunities to start and I have to get ready."

Saturday's win was the Blue Jays' ninth in 12 games and improved them to 10-3 at Target Field.

Lind has a 1.011 on-base plus slugging over his last 20 contests with 13 RBIs and a pair of two-homer games, making a good impression as Toronto owns a team option on his contract the next three years.

"Adam's always been a good player for this organization," manager John Gibbons said. "I don't know how the team will stack up next year. But I don't think he needs to audition. He's proven himself over time."

Lind will try to keep it going against Minnesota left-handed rookie Andrew Albers (2-2, 3.96), who was shelled Monday, allowing five runs and nine hits in 1 2-3 innings of a 10-6 win at Houston. He had thrown at least seven innings in four of his first five big league starts.

"Today I left a lot of balls up and left a lot of balls right over the middle and they made me pay," Albers said. "It obviously wasn't a very good day."

Trevor Plouffe is batting .324 through his last 19 contests with eight doubles.

Ryan Doumit is 2 for his last 14 but 3 for 9 off Rogers.

Rogers has never started versus the Twins, going 1-0 with a 5.14 ERA in six relief appearances against them.

The St. Louis Cardinals have beaten up on the Pittsburgh Pirates to move back atop the NL Central.

The Cardinals go for a three-game home sweep against the slumping Pirates, who will again try to secure their first winning season in 21 years Sunday.

After taking Friday's opener 12-8, St. Louis (82-60) moved one-half game ahead of Pittsburgh (81-60) and into first place in the division with Saturday's 5-0 victory. David Freese homered and drove in two runs for the Cardinals, who have averaged 5.4 runs during a 6-3 stretch against the Pirates.

"We've been back-and-forth with them all year," winning pitcher Adam Wainwright said. "Any time you can win against them, it's a big win."

Pittsburgh is on the verge of a season worst-tying fourth consecutive defeat after going 7 for 34 (.206) with runners in scoring position during its last three games. While they have ended their run of 20 consecutive losing seasons, the Pirates are still seeking their first winning campaign since going 96-66 in 1992.

"We need to step it up, to get going again," said Andrew McCutchen, who had two of the team's three hits Saturday. "We've just got to keep battling."

All-Star third baseman Pedro Alvarez is mired in a 4-for-35 slump for the Pirates, who have dropped eight of 13. Russell Martin is 7 for his last 50.

The Cardinals will try to increase their lead behind rookie Michael Wacha (2-0, 3.20 ERA). The right-hander allowed three hits over six scoreless innings in Tuesday's 1-0 loss at Cincinnati, his first start in more than three weeks.

"He was very impressive," manager Mike Matheny said. "When you put guys in that kind of situation, you never know how they're going to react. He stepped up."

Wacha struck out four over two scoreless innings of relief in a 5-1 loss to Pittsburgh on Aug. 14, his only appearance in the series.

The Pirates counter with Charlie Morton (7-3, 3.00). Since yielding season highs of five earned runs and 10 hits in six innings in a 13-0 loss to St. Louis on Aug. 1, Morton has gone 4-0 with a 1.74 ERA during a six-start stretch.

"Charlie has gotten to a very good place," manager Clint Hurdle said.

The right-hander is looking to win a career-high fourth consecutive outing after yielding two runs - one earned - over seven innings in a 5-2 victory at Milwaukee on Monday.

"He is really good," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Morton. "He throws a great sinker and pounds the right-handers in with it. It's always down in the zone. He's got a good curveball and a good changeup. That's a really nice pitcher they have."

Morton, 0-5 with a 5.68 ERA in his last seven outings versus St. Louis, can't be looking forward to facing the Cardinals again. He, however, only surrendered two runs in six innings in his last matchup, a 4-3, 14-inning road loss Aug. 13.

Morton has had a rough time against several of St. Louis' hitters, including Yadier Molina (8 for 18 with four doubles), Jon Jay (6 for 14) and Carlos Beltran (6 for 15). Molina is 5 for 12 with a homer, two doubles and four RBIs in his last three games against the Pirates.

McCutchen, a career .340 hitter at Busch Stadium, is 24 for 59 (.407) with three homers, nine RBIs and 10 runs in his last 16 road games.

After persuading Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum to hand him the ball, Scott Baker is finally ready to take a major league mound for the first time in almost two years.

Back from Tommy John surgery, the right-hander makes his Cubs debut Sunday against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers.

Baker went 63-48 with a 4.15 ERA in 163 games - 159 starts - for Minnesota from 2005-11, then underwent elbow surgery in April 2012. Chicago (60-81) signed him as free agent late last year.

After spending some time rehabbing at the team's facility in Arizona, Baker allowed 18 earned runs and 34 hits with 16 strikeouts and 10 walks over 29 2-3 innings between Class-A Kane County and Class-A Daytona.

His last major league appearance came with the Twins on Sept. 24, 2011, and most recent start Aug. 8 of the same season.

"It's been a long while since I started a major league game, and there's definitely a lot to be excited about," Baker told the Cubs' official website. "Regardless of the results, I think you go out there and do the best you can and enjoy it. You never know when things are going to be taken away from you. You appreciate every start."

Sveum said earlier in the week that Baker would not start the series finale, but the veteran successfully lobbied his case to his manager and pitching coach Chris Bosio.

"They definitely valued my opinion," said Baker, who is not expected to be on a limited pitch count. "I said, 'I feel like I need to pitch, I want to pitch.' I appreciate the opportunity to get back out there. It's going to be fun for sure."

He'll try to help the Cubs bounce back from Saturday's 5-3 loss to Milwaukee (61-80) and finish 5-4 on this homestand.

Chicago could face a serious challenge from Yovani Gallardo (10-9, 4.31 ERA), who is 2-0 with a 1.37 ERA in four starts since coming off the disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

"Very pleased," Gallardo told the Brewers' official website about his performance since returning from that injury.

The right-hander has lasted seven innings in two straight starts, most recently Tuesday when he gave up two runs during a 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh.

Gallardo, however, has not been able to complete five innings in two starts against the Cubs this season, going 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA.

Chicago first baseman Anthony Rizzo is 11 for 24 in his last seven home games against the Brewers, and 4 for 9 with a double versus Gallardo.

Luis Valbuena's two-run homer gave the Cubs an early 2-0 lead Saturday, but Logan Schafer delivered a three-run triple as the Brewers scored four times in the fourth and won for the second time in three games since losing five in a row.

Despite the big hit, Schafer is batting .224 overall, and is 4 for 25 against the Cubs in 2013.

"Well, Schafer is off and on," manager Ron Roenicke said. "I don't want to say much he's been struggling for us, but he has been getting some big hits for us."

The Texas Rangers find themselves once again trailing in what's been a back-and-forth AL West race.

Nick Tepesch will try to help the Rangers from losing any more ground in his first start since returning from the disabled list Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels.

Texas (80-61) dropped 1 1/2 games behind Oakland in the division following its fifth loss in six contests and third in a row Saturday. The Angels (67-74) never trailed after Mark Trumbo's two-run homer in the first inning of an 8-3 win, and the Rangers committed a season-high four errors in their fourth loss in the last five road games.

"No matter who we play, it's going to be tough. I don't care if it's the Angels or whoever you want to throw out there," pitcher Derek Holland said. "There's not going to be an easy game from here on out, whether they're a first-place team or a last-place team. We're all competing to get somewhere, and other teams are trying to knock us out.'

Tepesch (4-6, 4.67 ERA) will try to help the Rangers avoid their first sweep in Anaheim since April 2-4, 2007, in his first start since being sidelined with inflammation in his right elbow on July 5. After being activated from the DL last Sunday, the right-hander tossed 3 1-3 scoreless innings of relief in a 4-2 loss in Oakland the next day.

Tepesch has never faced the Angels.

Los Angeles scheduled starter Jason Vargas (8-6, 3.80) has a 2.84 ERA in two starts versus Texas this season but has not received a decision in either game.

A.J. Pierzynski, who had a 127-game errorless streak end Saturday, is 4 for 6 with a triple this season against Vargas.

Adrian Beltre, who is mired in a 1-for-16 slump, is 3 for 24 (.125) all-time versus the left-hander.

Vargas allowed five runs and 10 hits over four-plus innings in a 7-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Tuesday after posting a 0.68 ERA in winning his previous two starts.

"I just wasn't able to put anybody away," he said. "It was just the inability to get the ball down late in the count and make quality pitches that got me today."

The Angels are batting .345 with runners in scoring position while going 12-3 since Aug. 23. They've gone 7 for 19 (.368) in the first two games of this series.

Mike Trout has hit safely in 13 of 14 games, batting .412 with 10 walks, while Kole Calhoun has driven in 12 runs in his last 13 contests.

Los Angeles hasn't swept a series from the Rangers since taking a three-game set Sept.19-21, 2008.

Texas hasn't lost four in a row since July 25-28.

The AL West-leading Oakland Athletics are surely sad to see baseball's worst team leave town.

Oakland tries to take advantage of its final matchup against the Houston Astros as these teams conclude their season series Sunday.

The Athletics (82-60) have made a habit of beating up on the Astros (47-95), taking 19 of 24 all-time matchups, including 14 of 18 this year. After moving into sole possession of first place in the division with Friday's 7-5 victory, Oakland hung on for a 2-1 win Saturday.

Jed Lowrie and Yoenis Cespedes provided all the offense with their 11th and 22nd homers, respectively, as the A's moved a season-best 22 games over .500. Oakland has hit .302 with 20 homers in winning 10 of 13 overall.

After getting seven scoreless innings from Dan Straily, Oakland would love to see Bartolo Colon (14-6, 2.90 ERA) deliver a similar performance. The 40-year-old right-hander, though, is looking to snap a season-high five-start winless stretch after yielding four runs - one earned - in five innings of Tuesday's 5-1 defeat to Texas.

"I pitched the ball well," Colon, who has posted a 6.48 ERA during a three-game losing streak, told MLB's official website.

Colon may like his chances of bouncing back against the Astros, whose .300 on-base percentage is the AL's worst. Colon had posted a 1.89 ERA in winning three consecutive starts in the series before yielding five runs over four innings in a 5-4 loss Aug. 13.

Aside from that showing, Colon has surrendered two earned runs or fewer in each of his other nine home starts dating to May 31.

Chris Carter is 1 for 10 against Colon, and Matt Dominguez is 2 for 9. Carter, who spent his first three seasons with Oakland, is 9 or 66 (.136) with one homer and 24 strikeouts while playing in all 18 games against the A's this year.

Hoping to get back on track, the Astros give the ball to rookie Paul Clemens (4-4, 5.91) for his third big league start. The 25-year-old right-hander has gone without a decision while posting a 3.72 ERA since joining the rotation Aug. 27.

Clemens labored through 3 2-3 innings in Monday's 10-6 loss to Minnesota, surrendering four runs, seven hits and three walks.

"You can't be behind in counts consistently," he said after throwing 42 of his 77 pitches for strikes. "I have to attack, get ahead of guys and get in my favorable counts. I was putting those guys in a position of success getting behind in counts. That burned me."

Clemens has a 1.17 ERA in two relief appearances versus Oakland spanning 7 2-3 innings.

He will need to be careful against Cespedes, who is 11 for 28 (.393) with two homers in seven games this month after hitting .216 in August. The star left fielder is batting .378 with two homers and six RBIs during an 11-game hitting streak versus Houston.

Lowrie, who was acquired in the Carter deal, is hitting .313 with three homers, 12 RBIs and 12 runs in 16 games in the season series.

The San Francisco Giants' Madison Bumgarner has received very little run support during his season-worst six-start winless stretch.

He has typically been plagued by the same issue against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Bumgarner goes for his first victory in over a month Sunday as the Giants try to salvage a four-game split against the visiting Diamondbacks.

Among the NL leaders in ERA and opponents' batting average (.204), Bumgarner (11-9, 2.91 ERA) has missed out on his share of wins thanks in part to a lousy 3.55 run support average. The left-hander has seen things get worse during his last six outings, a stretch during which he has been backed by a combined nine runs.

Bumgarner yielded two runs in six innings but didn't factor in the decision of Tuesday's 3-2 loss at San Diego. He is 0-8 with a 3.02 ERA when receiving two runs of support or fewer compared to 11-1 with a 2.79 ERA when he gets three or more.

"He's as tough a competitor as you can find," said manager Bruce Bochy, whose team has dropped eight of Bumgarner's nine starts since the All-Star break despite his 2.67 ERA.

"He's disappointed not to win, but he goes back out there and gives it all he has."

Bumgarner has been nearly untouchable in four outings against the Diamondbacks, going 1-1 with a 1.71 ERA. While he received a season-high nine runs of support in a 10-5 road victory June 8, the Giants have provided him with a combined one in his other three starts in the series.

Bumgarner will try to help San Francisco (63-79) get back on track following Saturday's 2-1 loss. Matt Cain pitched effectively into the seventh inning in his return from the disabled list, but the Giants were limited to six singles.

San Francisco has averaged a major league-worst 2.45 runs at home since July 7, going 10-21.

Winner in three of four, Arizona (72-69) is eight games behind Cincinnati for the NL's second wild-card spot.

The Diamondbacks give the ball to Wade Miley (9-10, 3.78), who is 0-2 with a 4.85 ERA in his last five outings. The left-hander is coming off the shortest start of his career, giving up five runs and eight hits before exiting with two outs in the second inning of Tuesday's 10-4 loss to Toronto.

"I got a little upset with myself," he told MLB's official website. "Just the fact that I lost it like that. ... I feel like I've had that same exact stuff and thrown seven innings and given up a couple of runs and given us a chance to win.

"Just one of those games you've got to put it behind you and move forward."

Miley is 0-3 with a 4.15 ERA in four career starts versus San Francisco. While he has had a rough time against Buster Posey (6 for 12 with a homer and two doubles), the All-Star catcher is likely to miss a fifth consecutive game due to a swollen right ring finger.

Arizona's Martin Prado is uncertain to be available after sitting out Saturday with an illness.
